CNN: First Lady “Set For World Stage” [Update: Hillary Shines On Iranian Communiques]

(bumped up from this morning)

UPDATE: Look at Hillary. Listen to Hillary. I rest my case. (You’ll find several more substantive news videos featuring Hillary Clinton newly added to the post at 8:20 p.m., and another of Michelle today disembarking the plane in London.) Ginger sent me the embed code! Thanks!

Foreword: I defend this post because the entire Obama perpetual campaign machine is predicated on appearance, not reality. E.g., the firing of GM’s Rick Wagoner was not rational, as Larry Johnson pointed out yesterday:

The firing of Rick Wagoner was not made for any rational economic reason. This is pure politics, designed in part to portray Barack as a tough guy who is taking charge on the eve of his international debut at the G20 summit. …

Never mind that it abruptly interrupts the intense planning GM has undertaken to meet a deadline of 60 days and counting. It was an viciously audacious, and perhaps unconstitutional, move of a “unitary executive” Obama who makes Bush look tame. Obama didn’t even confer with a single member of Congress from Michigan. So much for those quaint branches of government. But back we go to Michelle:

Let us pray that the longtime, expert White House protocol staff members have been permitted to dispense the must-needed advice she’ll require in order to be suited to step up onto the “world stage.”

In the video below, you see the tacky faux royale outfit — Inaugural, wasn’t it? Worn daytime? NO, NO, NO! — that “costume” looks like it came from the 70% off sale rack at Fashion Bug or Alley Cat Boutique:

Those arms! What IS this? Is it because it’s the only body part that is … honestly, that is petty, Susan … but, come on! Enough already with the arms.

And what in the name of god great couture – Valentino, Norell, Dior, Chanel, Balenciaga and Halston – is that obsequiously decorative but tacky outfit, obviously intended to make her appear queenly but which sadly makes her look seedy.

Mrs. Obama requires a tastemaker not just for her food but for her wardrobe.

Almost all First Ladies have shown basic good taste, from Jacqueline Kennedy to Laura Bush.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s outfits are so invariably appropriate and smart-looking that we scarcely notice them. The handsome black pants suit she wore to Mexico showed off not just the pounds she’s clearly lost, but also her cultured sense of decorum and a subtle sophistication.

But there is an inappropriately gaudiness to Mrs. Obama’s choices that reveal a lack of discernment in how she comes across and which will doubtless be noticed by the aesthetes of Europe in the coming days.

Look at the tasteful simplicity of Hillary’s appearance in this video below. She has sufficient self-confidence to avoid Michelle’s error in adorning herself with vulgar bejeweled assemblages of cloth.

Look at Sarkozy’s wife, Carla Bruni:

bruni

Taste. If you don’t have it, listen to experts and other women and men who do have it.

She is having, or has had, a private audience with the Queen. I doubt, sadly, that we’ll ever learn what the Queen’s impressions were.

I agree. MO is meretricious. No taste at all. Another tacky American goes to Europe. God help us.

      Michelle Obama

      ….
These photos show some very good dresses. The green and brown outfits are very well done, but I do question who is posing her in the laying on the sofa writing angle. At this point she should not allow any photos that are staged to go through looking like a sexy bit, it should all be poise and dignified poses.

Coretta Scott King always looked the picture of a fine and cultured lady. I think she was class personified.

      • http://noquarter foxyladi14

now..she would have been an absolutly fabulous.first lady..

        • http://firefox AnnieCollier

And, an original. No one ever compared Mrs. King to anyone else. She was secure in her identity.

      • mary

Coretta Scott King was DIGNITY personified…A lady with a capital L. Please do not compare with ME-chele “proud for second time now my hubbie’s the Prez”!…

  • politicalidentitycrisis

Ugh! When I see that woman I can’t decide who makes me more nauseous, her or Barrakula! Honestly, they both walk like they are just learning how. When I see the unelegant couple all I think is they look like they are playing a part and cast by a desperate casting director who couldn’t find any other actors to chose from!

    • FranSC

While I do think it is a slippery slope to talk about clothes, looks, and idiosyncrasies, a.k.a. Sarah Palin, I cannot help myself when I’m being represented to the world by this woman. To be the exercise buffs they are, both Obamas have the worst walk/gait I have about ever observed.

Michelle indeed walks like a horse. She also seems to crouch her shoulders or something to perhaps not look as tall as he is. That’s why when she is compared to the exquisite Jacqualin Kennedy, I gasp in horror much like CoJoe would do. Obama himself has a worse walking style than G.W.B. Bush walked with his arms away from his body like a jock or nar-do-well.

If they are going to go along with all this Camelot bull, they need to have someone give them some “How to” pointers on how to move elegantly. Oh, yes, while we could all no doubt benefit from more definition of everything, enough with the arms already.

Whew! I feel a lot better now that I have all that off my chest. I’ll move on to the really important stuff.

      • elise

FranSC, I agree about the slippery slope, but I do think style is genetic. It’s all about seeing the colors, standing in front of a mirror and looking at the total effect. I’ve wondered if Michelle is trying to make a statement apart from fashion when she chooses her clothes. Jackie Kennedy was incredibly graceful and poised. Caroline walks like Shreck. I guess even a lifetime of privilege and expensive schools can’t give you everything.

        • FranSC

Elise, I almost included a sentence about Caroline Kennedy’s walk being even worse than Michele’s – and God knows SHE probably had plenty of “how to carry yourself” advisors.

I agree, Michele is trying to make a statement, but I’m not sure what it is. She is either way over the top too dressed – big necklaces, earrings, huge distracting geometric designs (the red and black dress for his nomination speech)- or she is way too casual – like the “peddle pusher”, cropped pants that look like she just cleaned the house.

The only message that I get is she’s trying too hard to be folksy and loose-as-a-goose for a First Lady.

          • elise

“The only message that I get is she’s trying too hard to be folksy and loose-as-a-goose for a First Lady.”</i.

That’s one explanation, Fran. She isn’t anymore prepared for her new position than her husband is for his so she may be under a lot of stress. What if she fails, makes a faux pas, trips or looks dumb? It would happen in front of the whole world. She maybe arrogant, but she may also be very insecure so has she tried to lower expectations?

            • elise

Sorry, messed that one up. I can’t mulit-task. Susan, thanks for the vids. Hillary was powerful looking in that white suit yesterday, but I’m still partial to orange pants suits.

            • I’mFedUp

She is extremely insecure, Elise, you are right. And she doesn’t look at the world the way we do. She sees black hate that doesn’t exist all around her. And she herself has all of that hatred for “white bitches.” Can’t wait to hear about that meeting with the Queen. That’s just not pretty.

            • http://firefox AnnieCollier

Please don’t insult horses. They don’t deserve to be compared to MEchelle.

        “snark”

      • Ester

i think that you guys should try to compare the level of intelligence between these 2 ladies( carla and michelle).

michelle is educated and is not a “babie”, while carla is all concerned about fashion. she is a model and not a havard graduate.

why don’t you concern yourselves with the question as to why carla was not present at the G20 summit with other 1st ladies?
do you think that she has the intelectual capability as michelle? don’t you imagine that she might have felt a bit inferior to sit with well educated women of substance?

  • Elle

Ugh…MO’s lack of taste continues to offend. But does she not have anyone close to her that has any good taste in clothes? Who would allow someone they think highly of to walk around in that dreadful yellow get up?

    • http://noquarterusa.net/ SusanUnPC

I vividly remember my instant reaction to that wholly unsuitable outfit for her husband’s taking of the oath. If anyone would choose to wear that tacky outfit, it should only be worn at night.

She’s got a princess complex thing going, methinks. She is also so insecure that she needs to over-dress, she feels, to make herself equal. No, Michelle. Truly powerful women under-dress — if they’re successful, you scarcely notice what they’re wearing. Again, I refer everyone to Hillary who knows that.

      • dave

Actually, Susan, I think Michelle looks and dresses very well. Maybe the reason Hillary looks so good these days is that someone – Michelle perhaps – told her to lose those ridiculous polyester pant suits she sported on the primary campaign trail.

        • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yhXA3fXpCFk Woman Voter

Please, Hillary could wear a lamp shade and she would look like a million dollars with those eyes and that warm smile. The pantsuits were functional and worked because she was talking about policy not trying to woo woo people. Look around and see women in high positions…PANTSUITS!

Michelle needs to to work it, and smile! I am one of those people that thinks she has great arms and nice long legs. Just look at Ru work it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aY0ILbj31Ww

          Dave

Sweetie, you are sooooo unperceptive….OBAMYOPIA is a curable afflication.
They played the Race Card in N.H., N.C. and now they’re playng the “cool me now the Prez on them there green bills” so we can shit on good taste. You can take the boy out of hte political sewers of Chicago but you can’t take the political sewers of CHicago from outta da boy.

Go see the hyoutube of Mechelle in Chicago last Jan 2008 when she gave a speech to business women there and told them that if Hillary can’t clean her own house she can’t clean the White House! Meantime, Mechele’s hair looked like it needed a good wash and style and she looked like she came out of a car wash-minus the auto!
She sure has changed (thanks to taxpayhers bucks!)

          • Ellen

she never said Hillary – wasn’t even referring to her. read the context of the quote. she was talking about her own family and then… keep on pushing these same ole same ole lies if it makes you feel better.

        • http://! stodgie

hey dave, michelle can’t tell hillary anything in that michelle doesn’t have a lick of common sense. now keep moving and don’t leave anymore doggie surprises for us.

      • Ellen

Are you seriously writing this crap?? and you think it is important, how? Perhaps Michelle just doesn’t have the same ‘taste’ as you are used to seeing in presidents’ wives? Does it make you feel superior to pick apart a person’s body or clothes like this? Her style may not be to your liking (of course nothing Michelle or her husband do will ever be okay with you)but there are many people who find her unique taste quite refreshing and enjoy seeing the first lady show her own style.
You are wasting your time comparing her to Hillary – they are two different people and could hardly get by with the same type of clothes. Hillary may look good now that she has adopted the pantsuit (at $4000 per suit per her LA designer she had better own it)but until that realization, she was the WORST dresser ever! Seriously, she was a laughingstock – even she admits it. And that ridiculous LONG black coat she has been wearing recently??? There is no one with any fashion sense who does not know that a woman of Hillary’s height should NEVER wear a full length coat, especially with pants. Absolutely a no brainer!

        • I’mFedUp

Do you really think we care about your troll blather? Why don’t you get a life you pathetic mess?

        • BlueTopaz

“There is no one with any fashion sense who does not know that a woman of Hillary’s height should NEVER wear a full length coat,”

That’s right, folks. According to smEllen and other superficial fashionistas, only tall women may have the benefit of a long coat on a cold day. Forget the weather, fashion is more important than common sense.

          • http://firefox AnnieCollier

It’s much more appropriate to go sleeveless on a snowy day.

You can wear anything so long as the dimensions are right. Hillary’s pant suits were adopted because of the slurs about her legs. So she put that to rest by adopting a uniform…as many, many busy women do. Always ready, always appropriate wardrobe. She feminizes them with her jewelry, scarves, etc. In her official capacity, she has to be ready to meet government leaders from a variety of backgrounds and some have very conservative religious requirements…no short skirts, arms covered, etc. They are not polyester as one bot suggested yesterday.

MEMEchille’s sheath dresses emphasize her worst figure flaws. Empire dresses, fine…but cut in a way that doesn’t show off the big hips. She usually wears figure hugging dresses…even worse. She is so enamored with bling and just can’t resist incorporating it into her daytime dress. If you’re not in an official appearance, it can be alright (lunch out at a nice restaurant with women friends) but just take a look at Mrs. Brown…subdued and simple. Especially in a cancer ward where they definitely aren’t “dressed” to the nines. MEMEchille unfortunately never disappoints. So glad to hear she took care of the details…ipod? How could it be a “signed” copy of Richard Rodgers songs?

        • C.S.

So, how much does Mrs. Obama spend on her clothes? All the clothing I’ve seen her in looks like it was designed by the same guy who did her inaugural gown. And reports say she shops “cheap” but someone should clue her in that cheap fabric looks cheap. Especially when she’s standing next to women dressed in better quality clothing. And you don’t have to be six feet tall to look good in appropriate clothing, Prime Minister Merkel of Germany always looks appropriately dressed and elegant even in coats.

And celeberties are proof positive that if you don’t have good taste, you can always buy it; along with lessons in manners, sitting and walking, smiling, even lessons to soften your voice tone if it is too abrasive. But Mrs. Obama is such an angry woman who, like the guy she married, can’t take criticism let’s just hope the Protocol Office was ablie to train her in the proper way to greet the Queen and the other dignitaries because she didn’t do so well with the Brown visit.

    • Lyn

IF she would stand straight that would help alot, instead of the poor posture, slumped shoulders that make her long (well toned )arms seem even longer, not very becoming at all,
but the poor posture is better than he perpetual scowl, I know she hates Most of America, but she doesn’t have to scowl all the time since she is FLOTUS she should at least fake it with a smile.

      • Ellen D

I think she needs to learn how to walk. I saw her this morning swinging her arms as if she were on patrol. Ladies glide.

        • Ellen D

Whoops – I just watched the video again – she’s definitely bow-legged. There’s no way those legs walking won’t look like an eggbeater.

          • typical gram cracker

Does MO have bowed legs or are they pleasure bent?

      • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yhXA3fXpCFk Woman Voter

Personally, I think she needs someone that knows protocol and can advise her. OK, she is the ‘First Lady’, so she needs to work it, and be a charmer. She also, needs some good friend to travel with her, and take some of the stress off and help with those little details.

We should also cut her some (not too much) slack as she does come from humble beginnings and well, I know all about those classes the well to do take and all the clinics they attend. As for Bruni, NO MICHELLE DON’T PUT ON THE BRAZIL BIKINI! Don’t its a trap, don’t do it, it only works for former models…really!

        • C.S.

Most of us come from “humble beginnings”, some far more humble than her’s but that doesn’t mean we grew up without manners! And it isn’t a “race thing”, it’s about having a parent that teaches you these things when you are so young that breaching manners and politeness isn’t even a thought long before you reach middle age.

And We the Taxpayer pay the wages for a perfectly fine Protocol Office and staff to take care of all these pesky little details for her; but she has to use it so unless she has a problem with retention (she need a teleprompter, too?) there is no excuse for not being prepared. And if she didn’t want to do it she could always stay home because it isn’t mandatory.

      • mary

        Lyn

To be fair to Mechelle, she is a Tall Gal, so posture always get affected. But she can hire someone now and she would look more comfortable…even Jackie K- Onassis took posture lessons…

        Our Hillary doesn’t need lessons. She’s self-assured.

Your comment is sickening, seriously. ‘our Hillary’??? and its the Obamabots who need to curb their woship of their beloved leader?

          • elise

We haven’t called her goddess yet Ellen, but she’s our gal. She has our backs and we have hers. Further, we don’t worship at the feet of “cool”. I’ve watched Hillary for almost twenty years. Will you still love Obama when he’s sixty?

    • http://www.sonicninjakitty.wordpress.com Sonic Ninja Kitty

I’ll bet she is getting advice from her mom and friends, but that is part of the problem!

Ug–I actually feel sorry for her going over there. The British press will rip her apart (the UK CNN notwithstanding).

      • FLDemFem

And the French press, especially the fashion press, are going to have a field day, especially after the snub to Sarkozy. And just standing next to Carla Bruni is going to make Meechelle look bad, never mind what they are wearing.

      • FranSC

“The British press will rip her apart”

I’ll believe it when I see it! Like her husband she seems immune to such reality. I hope it happens. She needs to be brought down a peg or two – she needs to get over herself!

    • beebop

She looks like a checker cab.

  • http://noquarterusa.net/ SusanUnPC

Look at the CNN video — when she is walking into the classroom.

She does not know how to walk either. She walks like she’s holding a basketball between her legs. No elegance. Not even a hint.

Carla Bruni, our nation’s lonely eyes …

Even Queen Elizabeth! Yes, a dowager. But she is appropriate. Always.

  • MG-PUMA

Michelle dresses this way to retain the approval of the dumb@sses who voted for her husband.

Think of all those borrowers who lived above their means, the “$30k millionaires” as they’re called in Texas. In NM, these people are referred to as “big hat, no cattle” types.

These people love the fact that now that they’re down, they’ve brought the whole world with them – you know, “misery loves company” voters bused in by ACORN.

So Michelle is smart to this and dresses to show her cameraderie with these types, going so far as to dress out of Lerners or JC Penney. Mark my word, the Europeans will take note of her fashion and even if the Los Angeles Times and VOGUE heap accolades upon her for using unknown designers, the Europeans won’t be that dumb and will check her off their list as “down-market.”

The MSM loves this of course and goes after her like hogs take to garbage, but WHATEVER!

I can only hope that Hillary will serve as a stop-gap to all this, but nonetheless, tongues will wag and snickers will be heard in the halls of Euro-power.

Apparently, Michelle Mania has already taken over Britain and they have not even landed yet!

Yes, the comparisons to Jackie Kennedy begin folks!

When Jacqueline Kennedy came to Europe in 1961, she enchanted even the most reserved world leaders, and she’s remained a tough act to follow for every first lady since.

But Michelle Obama seems to be up to the task of impressing — and delighting — even the grandest of them,

Michelle Obama is not in the same league as Carla Bruni and The Queen.

I can’t wait to see the photo ops of her tacky ‘au couture’ outfits vs. the real fashion icon Mrs. Sarkozy.

I wonder is anyone taught her how to bow to the Queen?

    • FLDemFem

Women curtsy to the Queen, men bow. The only exception is a fellow head of state, so Obama doesn’t have to bow, but Meechelle does have to curtsy. Nancy Reagan famously refused on the grounds that she was first lady and that set off every protocol and etiquette alarm on the planet. Bet Meechelle does the same thing..I mean, dressing like a drag queen makes you equal the The Queen, right??

      • Boxer Mum 06

Yes, I meant to say curtsy but hit the add button too soon.

I just had a thought – I wonder if Mechelle will take a bold step in British fashion and start wearing some hats. OMG! Can you imagine what she’ll be sporting?

        • http://firefox AnnieCollier

She might borrow Aretha’s hat. Oh, dear.

    • tek

Boxer Mum: I doubt she’s going to bow to the Queen; she thinks she is the Queen and she hates white people.

    • FranSC

If there was no one in the Obama WH to “teach” Barack that when the POTUS addresses a joint session of congress, tradition has it that he is introduced by the Speaker of the House, there sure as hell is no one to tell/teach/warn Michelle to bow to the Queen.

What a blunder a few weeks back when in the midst of the wild applause for BO’s first congressional address, know-it-all BO started thanking the congress people and telling them to have a seat. He even went so far as to say, “Madame Speaker…” when Pelosi yelled out, “It is my pleasure to introduce to you…..” Yes, they really do need help.

  • NoTrollZone

Hmm, I don’t really have an opinion on fashion for politicians. But I must say that dress in yellow on michelle is truly hideous. And I can’t help but notice that little odd rhinestone– I’m really hoping it’s not diamond– bit on the dress. It sort of looks like a tiara- but in the wrong place. Yes, I’d say the little princess wishes to be wearing a royal crown, but has had to settle for rhinestones
on the dress. Let’s hope she keeps her deep humility and doesn’t start sporting a tiara for real.

  • FrenchNail

The best taste you can have is to be understated. Pretty much an impossibility for Meeeechelle.

That’s all I have to say on the matter except I really woudl like to know the price tag of the travelling wardrobe, and who paid for it. Just to equal scores on the Palin front.

    • NoTrollZone

oh yes, please. I think you’re right. CNN should keep a running tally on the Chosen Two’s wardrobe.
After all, Meeeechelle (as you put it so well) made a point of saying that them Obamis pay for their own clothes. Yes, I think a running public tab is appropriate. And my guess is, that although that yellow dress is about as attractive as herpes, that
it cost one hell of a lot of money.

      • Lyn

It didn’t cost her anything, alot of her clothes were freebies, altho that isn’t really legal.
I think it is quite fitting her main designers claim for fame is making clothes for Rue Paul and femal impersonators.

        • FrenchNail

femal impersonators… Guess that if the glove does fit you must indicte…

          • beebop

I guess you were speaking French? because this is definitely not Englaise ….

            • FrenchNail

It’s a twist on if the glove fit you must acquite.

            • FrenchNail

              As in fashion crimes

        • Ellen

You are totally mistaken on this. if she gets a gift of clothes and keeps it, she pays taxes on it. and you have no proof that she gets free clothes – designers are begging her to wear their clothes, that’s the way its done. only Hillary didn’t get designer clothes when first lady becaue they knew what she would look like in their outfits….horrible!! they didn’t need the bad advertising.

          • I’mFedUp

You are truly a loser. Just a big fat nasty loser. I bet that Hillary comment gets you some big friends here. Why doesn’t filthy and trash like you stay at the Daily Kook.

            http://www.newsmax.com/kessler/michelle_obama_fashion/2009/02/23/184613.html

It will be curious to see how much Mrs. Obama claims on her taxes & required government forms next year for the free dresses, shoes and jewelry she receives. Donated or not, it’s still income and taxable.

          • C.S.

That’s right, we have no proof because everything is labeled top secret in this administration…but we can get the information from the designers who give her the clothes because, like Nancy Reagan, the designers will take them as a tax deduction if she does not pay for them. And, if she writes them off as a deduction, it will appear on their tax records. Either way, We the People will know because you can try but you can’t hide from the IRS.

      • athena

I really do not like Michelle – she seems to have a chip on her shoulder. With that said, since becoming First lady she has become more subdued in her speaking style and she does not try to outshine THAT ONE in public. Her outfit this morning leaving on AF1 was quite tasteful and appropriate.

        • beebop

She’s got to be quiet. If people knew the real Michelle? hahahahaha Geithner would look like a genius!!!

        • (trying to get over it)

i agree – that white coat was tasteful & elegant – she really looked great this morning

  • Peggy Sue

How interesting that Michelle Obama’s role as First Lady abroad will make her a “figure of power and world influence.”

And yet, we all remember the snide, belittling remarks about Hillary Clinton’s First Lady experience as being nothing more than a “tea party” hostess.

You’ve got give these journalists credit–they are shameless in the blatant adoration/propaganda department.

I won’t comment on Michelle Obama’s taste in clothes. But it would pretty hard to keep up with Sarkozy’s wife. She’s smashing. She reminds me somewhat of Jackie Kennedy’s understated but always elegant taste in clothes.

When I was a kid, my mother and all her friends tried to imitate the “Jackie” style [with varying degrees of success]. She was and still is a role model when it comes to dressing well and looking absolutely stunning. And Carla Bruni is right up there.

    • http://firefox AnnieCollier

And who did Jackie emulate? Audrey Hepburn who was a client of the ever elegant Hubert Givenchy. Jackie also assumed the “whispery” voice of MM. But no one ever compared her to either because she owned the style. She could wear everything well because she and her set dieted, exercised to the max. They didn’t strive for muscular arms, only graceful definition. They (look at any pic of Betsy Bloomingdale)did tend to develop what I call “bird legs” from all the dieting though.

She wasn’t so much a star though until she got to the WH. Elegant, appropriate, yes but life long preparation and polish really appeared when she stepped on to the world stage.

MEchille’s arms don’t make her look more feminine and she should definitely cover those knees. Those huge hips should ditch the sheath dresses. They also haven’t been altered well. She apparently uses a “stylist” who owns a Chicago boutique…guess she’s made big $$ from the grotesque dresses she sold her. And for God’s sake ditch the matronly prints. I had to laugh at the expensive boots she wore to “till the soil”. The royals know enough to put on their Wellies.

If I didn’t despise MEchille so much for her inner ugliness, I’d feel a little sorry for her being put in a position to expose her lack of propriety and knowledge. I just can’t quite bring myself to sympathize.

      • http://firefox AnnieCollier

In Strasbourg the defined Red Zone around the Hotel will be totally emptied of his residents. They will have to stay in hotels in different parts of town.

I am definitely not a fan of the Obamas, but I suspect Ms Obama has an outsider streak in her. Disparagement of her clothing and posture, and her, what I would describe as, athletic, jockish body language, to me represents patriarchal-mode policing. She knows what she’s supposed to do; rebellion leaks out. I say this because all my life I’ve been violating the sensibilities of those who must have adherence to the “feminine norm”. So there.

    • wodiej

everyone is not the First Lady either…so there

    • ME

If this vaccuous woman knew who she was and happened to be rebellious and boyish, that’s fine. I’ve seen many jockish strong woman (eg HRC) looking great even at formal balls. But I guess what we’re really making fun of here is the fact that she obviously doesn’t have a firm sense of self…if she did she she wouldn’t pretend to be something she isn’t. She’s the first Lady for cryin out loud…she should set an example for other woman when it comes to knowing oneself enough to know what makes you look the best in any circumstance (she has enough help for christ’s sake).

I think she, and her husband are pathetic imposters…there lack of taste is present in every move they make…not just fashion.

      • Mercedes

“I think she, and her husband are pathetic imposters…there lack of taste is present in every move they make…not just fashion.”

Exactly! That is exactly why she CANNOT look good no matter what she does and he CANNOT sound good whatever words come from his mouth.

If she were an authentic person, then she would probably be charming and likeable whatever she did and fashion setting whatever she wore.

        • FranSC

“I think she, and her husband are pathetic imposters…their lack of taste is present in every move they make…not just fashion.”

In essence….that is exactly what I have been trying to say on this subject.

    • beebop

There’s always the Betty Ford clinic?

  • ME

Godzilla has more elegance and taste. That inaugural ball dress was the most hideous rag I’ve ever seen on any woman and her posture was atrocious. Elegance and poise are obviously foreign concepts to her…as I guess they should be for a Che Guevara fan. But notice how all that populist shit is out the window now…now its all about enjoying the high-(low)life for her now.

If a starlet wore that dress to the Oscars, she would qualify as the worst dressed of the century…but since its Mrs. Oboobi suddenly its the epitome of style and fashion….you hypocrites.

I assume the American press and even part of the European press will fawn over Michelle’s wardrobe. But, since Obama has already started off on the wrong foot with Sarkozy, if Michelle shows any sort of attitude, I expect Carla Bruni to quickly put her in her place.

Is it bad to hope the First Lady fails miserably?

    • http://firefox AnnieCollier

I expect Carla Bruni to quickly put her in her place.

You’d suspect that she knows how having modeled and lived the privileged life.

I wonder if anyone could be as expert as Granny Bush though…they said usually you didn’t know you had been shived between the ribs until you started to bleed with Babs. Always overshadowed by Nancy Reagan, when she and Poppy Bush took over the WH, a reporter asked her if she planned to make any changes to the residence. She demurely replied there’d be no major changes…well, perhaps she’d only replace the beauty salon (fashionista, Nancy had a hairdresser on stand by) with a nursery or play room…another slap as Nancy was known to be unhappy to have no grandchildren. No slouch in the passive agressive department, our Babs.

Where did this British commentator get the idea that we give a shit about MO?
Americans couldn’t care less what the hell she wears.
So while her girls are in a very exclusive private school, she is touting public education? WTF?
Listen up Brits, we don’t give a damn about MO and wish you wouldn’t keep pushing her on us, we have much more to worry about then whether or not MO is showing her arms today.
When the hell is the MSM going to start reporting the real news?
OBAMA IS OUT TO DESTROY OUR COUNTRY, AND AT A RECORD PACE!
Does anyone in the MSM care, is this not affecting you or your families?
Please the real news, the real stories Americans care about.
We are so damn sick and tired of all the fluff that has been published the past year we’re chocking on it.
I WANT THE REAL NEWS REPORTED ON, WHERE IS OBAMA’S BIRTH CERTIFICATE, WHERE ARE HIS COLLEGE RECORDS, DOES ANYONE CARE TO REPORT THAT?
The only real news that I can truly depend on is the news on the blogs. News reported by real people who aren’t being paid off by Obama.

    • Ellen

These comments are getting uglier and uglier. The real news is truly Obama’s birth certificate and college records – right. we are all just waiting to hear about this crap that you have been peddling for months now.

      • I’mFedUp

Well, then produce them you buffoon.

  • sandi78

Carla Bruni isn’t going to be there.

I just saw a picture of Oblabla and Meeechelle arriving in London. She changed her outfit on the flight over. The new one is hideous. It’s a pukey mustard-colored dress with a cowl-type neckline (similar color to the inaugural disaster), with a black coat on top, but the coat is weird. Like the inaugural mess, it doesn’t button, but has a peculiar, and unflattering, strap or something under the bustline, like an empire waist, to hold it together.

If her “designers” had been on Project Runway, they wouldn’t have lasted very long.

    • http://firefox AnnieCollier

I believe they’ll meet up on Saturday when all the first ladies have a luncheon or some such event.

MEchille! Just watch the hostess. Use the same fork/spoon/knife/wine glass, etc…chew with your mouth closed…no elbows on the table.

    • http://firefox AnnieCollier

unflattering, strap or something under the bustline, like an empire waist, to hold it together.

Isn’t that her favorite sequined belt? Again, not good for the type of outfit. She does try to sparkle doesn’t she?

Marilyn Monroe once said she (in real life) didn’t like to wear a lot of jewelry because it took the attention away from her. Even as insecure as she sometimes was, she knew what was important for her image. On screen MM was always gorgeous. Off screen, she wasn’t particularly, in her day to day life, a fashion icon. Rather, her persona was so powerful, she stood out in a white shirt and black capri’s…as did Jackie.

look, nobody is less fond of the obamas than i am, but i think that the gleeful, shameless picking on every aspect of MO’s appearance should be beneath us. i mean seriously, the criticism should be confined to her actions, not her appearance.

    • http://firefox AnnieCollier

We are critical because she comes across…through her actions…as a pretentious wannabe. If she would simply STOP taking her promoters advice and STOP trying to be a second class Jackie or whomever, it would serve her best. But then, she’s only following in the footsteps of hubby…Barack Abe Franklin John Fitzgerald Martin Luther Obama.

People recognize the inauthentic pose she takes and it grates. WHO ARE THEY? We’re afraid that we do know and it isn’t pretty.

      • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yhXA3fXpCFk Woman Voter

Frankly, I am cutting her some slack, because she did know what it was to be poor and didn’t grow up like Obama. I think she has learned via the response to Hillary that American’s value work and the true work ethic and that we all were for Hillary because of her deep held commitments to her country.

Now, here we are with Michelle, and I say they should look at Coretta Scott King and Rosa Parks and she should cut out her own path and work it. If she is going to be greeting and meeting on our behalf, I want her looking good, and I also want her to get her propers (respect) when she pulls it all out (does good). I don’t know how long we can put her face in the pie, we should hope that she smiles, and she has two good things going in my book; those two little girls. They smile, they are beautiful and seem very happy and that should count.

They didn’t cover the story fairly and I still believe that Hillary was the bast candidate that just happened to be a woman. So, they aren’t getting this woman’s money any more…No No No We Won’t pay for media that trashes good candidates because they are women!

    • AOK

You can’t reason with children. It’s a waste of time and energy to do so. Let them continue to hate on the POTUS and the FLOTUS. It doesn’t require much brain activity to hate and the inane rantings only serve as pure amusement for me.

      • C.S.

I’m not sure that “hate on the POTUS and FLOTUS” carries the message you wished to convey. Sounds rather disrespectful to whoever/whatever POTUS and FLOTUS you are referring to; however, in a democratic/republic The People retain the right to criticize their government and obviously, this POTUS and FLOTUS have opened themselves up to a whole lot of criticism by their arrogant “I’m better than you” attitude. They are simply the humble servants of We the People and as such, should listen to what We, their employers, telling them that we don’t like them “putting on airs”. So if you can’t stand the heat of criticism, the recommendation is that you get out of their critics’ kitchen.

Every man I have talked to and asked if they thought she was attractive….black, white and brown…have all said she is ugly. I don’t care if our first lady is pretty or ugly, but I wish the media would stop calling this ugly woman beautiful.

No one wants a first lady to be hot. You obviously don’t get that we want her to be attractive, knowledgeable, know herself, intelligent, represent us in a dignified manner and love the country. Hillary and Sarah have all of the above as well as being beautiful women.

It seems to me that you bought all of the right-wing talking points that were spread about Mrs Obama on the Google lock, stock and barrel. The right hates outspoken and strong women. You should know, as they hated Hillary the moment they saw her. They see the same in Mrs Obama. Palin, however, is a one trick pony. Her looks are her only marketable skill. Nothing more. Let’s face it…she’s got no class. Dressing her up and taking her to Europe won’t change things one bit.

  • ziggy

OK, any women lacking Carla Bruni’s looks, poise, and wardrobe… Please move to the back of the bus.

Apparently we’ve decided it’s all about the looks and the clothes.

    • Diana

We’ve? Do you have a mouse in your pocket? I clearly said I could care less if she’s walking around naked. She doesn’t represent me. There is a much bigger picture in that video that needs to be addressed. I for one am sick of the out and out lies the MSM promotes to place these two people on some sort of pedestal. Or perhaps you could explain to me just what she’s done for education other than talk to a few students?

    • Karma

Could you please tip off the media then?

Because most of the stories about Michelle have to do with her clothes.

Or is NQ solely responsible for that media framework?

      • WMCB

No, NQ is not responsible for the framework, our sexist society is.

That framework should be resisted, not reinforced. The media is judging her positively based on clothes, looks, etc. The counter to that is not to judge her negatively by the same standard. When you do that, you are still buying the framework that says this is how women in power are to be judged.

    • Ester

thank you dear, am so supprised of the way you americans are so much into class and fashion.
carla is all about appearing in expensive cloths.

if michelle starts wearing expensive cloths, am sure you guys will be the first to scream help……….

  • ziggy

In the less important news, we have today’s revelations concerning Dick Cheney’s planted stay-behinds.

And we thought we were rid of this guy. HA!

    • Peggy Sue

We also have the revelations of Obama’s direct ties to ACORN [despite his denials], conveniently buried by the NYT in October because it was a “game changer.”

      How’s that for a Ha!

Of course, for those of us who saw through the lies this hardly comes as a surprise.

But then, “kool” trumps competence and/or honesty. It’s an appearance thing! For guys.

  • tek

Seriously, Sarkosy’s wife is a super-model. That said, MEchelle really needs a new designer. Can’t believe she met the Queen! Love to be a fly on the wall at that meeting!

  • I’mFedUp

All I can say is…You can’t make chicken salad out of chicken shit.

    • VMorris

All I can say is…You can’t make chicken salad out of chicken shit.

LOL!!!! The mainstream media seems to think they can!

    • http://noquarter foxyladi14

oh.you could..but like her it would be gross..

  • rw

Seems a better comparison to Jackie Kennedy, judging from the pics above, is Carla Bruni. It is difficult to comprehend why the media insist on making that gross looking big woman with no finesse a comparative to the refined JK, really…wish the MSM would stop manipulating reality. Just know the euro press will be polite, but at home the Europeans will be continue to say she looks like a brute.

    • Lyn

THE first person I heard make the comparision to Jackie was MEEEShelle herself, with he camelot with a tan bit…she is delusional

  • James Cole

    Yay Hillary!

    • http://N/A breeze

Has anybody seen the glittery top she wore meeting
      the Browns, this morning?

      Jacuqeline Kennedy?

      H A R D L Y ………

      • tango

Oh I agree. And she overdosed on pearls too because she’s wearing both a pearl necklace and multi-strand bracelet. I love a little sparkle, but I don’t think sequins is really appropriate for a day meeting with the British PM and his wife. It’s kind of like her inaguration outfit – more appropriate for a garden party. Mrs. Obama should’ve stuck with something a bit more understated if she wanted to wear so many pearls.

This second photo shows off the sparkles much better:

        • http://firefox AnnieCollier

More pictures through Drudge show the whole ensemble. The beaded and rhinestone sweater is paired with a mint green skirt with shiny silver (looks like) windowpane pattern. Too many bracelets, diamond stud earrings and double strand pearls. No stockings. Snakeskin pumps.

She stuck out like a sore thumb in the midst of the other women in navy or black dresses. There’s a lovely picture of her drinking tea with her tongue out.

OK, I’m starting to feel sorry for her now that she’s changed her stylist from the Chicago (dismal failure) boutique owner to the sales clerk at J. Crew or maybe she went online and picked it out herself.

      • http://noquarter foxyladi14

Jackie was a lady first..before she was first lady..it helps..

  • helenk

Do you think they will sit her at Camilla’s table?
Meechelle’s father was an overpaid political ward leader type. The were middle class never poor.
Both backtrack and meechelle try to play poor pitiful me I had a rough childhood. Neither one really knows a thing about being poor. They both had better opportunities than a majority of Americans. Instead of using these opportunities to make lives better they used them to scam. That makes them no class and low class and that is all they will ever be.

Boo Hoo. Affirmative Action forced us to go to Princeton and Harvard.

Did you see they gave the Queen and IPOD?

    • tango

Yes, and check out what Mrs. Obama wore:

      http://www.drudgereport.com/

Talk about frumpy. This is the style setter First Lady that we’re supposed to all fawn over?

  • http://firefox AnnieCollier

One of those who chatted with Mrs. Obama was Namina Turay, 32, who had been diagnosed with breast cancer two years ago but has been in remission for a year.

“Congratulations on being done,” Mrs. Obama told Turay.

As in “put a fork in it”?

Congratulations on your remission would have been fine. It just goes on and on.

Ipod? Unless it was personally assembled and signed by Steve Jobs, dipped in the Potamac and blessed by saints to donate to the royal museum…no.

    • MG-PUMA

      LOL!!!!

  • WMCB

Susan, I love ya, and I respect you, but I have to disagree on this.

I am really uncomfortable with the ragging on Me-chelle’s physique or wardrobe that I keep seeing cropping up. Women in high positions have been judged by those factors for too long, and I don’t think we ought to contribute to it, no matter how much we may despise the particular woman.

Her lack of dignity, her galling lack of protocol awareness? Yes. Fair game. But not her dress or her height or her face.

Y’all are free to disagree, and I’m not mad at anyone over it. Just thought I’d speak up.

  • Claire

Weren’t you guys offended by the constant focus on and criticism of Hillary’s and Palin’s outfits, figures, hair, clothes, ect.?

Didn’t you call that focus and criticism sexist and demeaning (which it largely was)?

So it seems pretty hypocritical that you are now turning around and doing the exact same thing to Michelle Obama. You are criticizing her using the same appearance-based attacks that outraged you when they were directed at women you actually liked. That is hypocritical.

I know you don’t like her, and that’s fine (although your dislike is really fanatically intense–a lot of you sound exactly like the worst of the Hillary-haters, with “Michelle” substituted for “Hillary”), but you should express that dislike in a different way.

  • Claire

Seriously: “Mrs. Oboobi”? “She walks like a horse”?

That’s some impressive maturity and intelligence on display right there. Well done on combatting the sexist patriarchal systems of our society by attacking a female public figure’s face and hair and clothes. Hillary would be so proud.

  • Claire

Really, you guys should try to emulate the woman you admire so much. Hillary is brilliant and classy, and would be horribly embarrassed by people who claim to support her while making the kind of sexist/racist (“Her hair sucks”/”She hates white bitches”) remarks evident in many of the posts on this blog.

    • Ester

i thought i was the only one to remark these frieghtening comments

  • Ester

michelle have been earning her life with her brain and not her looks. you guys should be proud you have an educated first lady.

anyway, the usa is rich and can afford to dress her first lady in expensive looking cloths; i only hope there will be no complains when michelle starts dressing in chanel and other haute coutûres la jacky.

  • LONG LIVE PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA!

    LONG LIVE PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA!

    Speaking of Barack Obama:

Barack Obama is a racial-minority individual and does not like racism:

And Michelle Obama is a racial-minority individual and does not like racism:

WORLDWIDE PROLIFERATION OF INFORMATION RELATING TO SCANDALS:

    (I) I do solemnly swear by Almighty God that George W. Bush committed hate crimes of epic proportions and with the stench of terrorism which I am not at liberty to mention. Many people know what Bush did. And many people will know what Bush did—even until the end of the world. Bush was absolute evil. Bush is now like a fugitive from justice. Bush is a psychological prisoner. Bush often worries. In any case, Bush will go down in history in infamy.

(II) It is opined that Bill Clinton committed terrifying, racist, hate crimes during his presidency, and I am not free to say anything further about it. Numbers 32:23: “Be sure your sins will find you out.”

(III) What if basically all racial-minority people would subscribe to the interpretations that George Herbert Walker Bush committed monstrous, racist, hate crimes while he was the President of the United States? It will eventually come out: it is only a matter of time.

(IV) I know it may be hard to believe. However, Ronald Wilson Reagan committed horrible, racist, hate crimes during his presidency.

    - A.W.

(I can type 90 words per minute, and there are thousands of copies on the Internet (by March 29, 2009) indicating the contents of (I), (II), (III), and (IV). And there are thousands of copies in very many countries around the world.)

AOK, where have you been? You show up on this fluff piece about Michelle, but we haven’t been hearing from you on the policy pieces written by NQ. Can’t comment about your guy and his policies because he is doing such a disasterous job. BTW, how’s that great orator and his teleprompter doing so far? I’ll be generous and give him a D- so far.

  • Ellen

isn’t it the truth – this site is my daily humor and the realization that some people are truly beneath contempt.
I thought I saw the worst with all the Bush haters – but this site and others like it have shown evil and hatred like I have never seen.

Oh, Ellen! Sure you have…like the Daily Kos or Huff & Puff when they trash Hillary and Sarah for months and months and will never stop. You kiddies can dish it out but are shocked, simply shocked when we throw your crap back at you.
