kudos to iowa; my folks and kin are from iowa. i live in SD now, and i think that in general, mid-western people are not haters, but of course they are subject to the ignorance that has existed about homosexuals. that is slowly being overcome.

That is good news and from Iowa no less. One state at a time is the way to go and Suze Orman presented the economic and legal benefits. There is the added benefit to the children of gay couples being accepted by their peers when their parents marriage is recognized. Our next door neighbors are wonderful parents and they have homeschooled all four of the kids, they spend more time as a family than most heterosexual families I know. The two older boys look after our home and animals when we go out of town and they are more responsible than the nanny we used to hire. They are wonderful neighbors and I would love for them to be able to marry.

I'm so glad that this happened! I feel that it's inevitable that homosexuals have the same rights as heterosexuals. This is the civil rights battle of today! And those that stand against it now will be seen in history like those who stood against the civil rights of the 1960s.

This is great news. I feel it's inevitable that eventually homosexuals get the same rights that heterosexuals do. I feel that it is today's civil rights movement. The world continues to progress and those that stand in progress's way must be rolled over.

It's just too bad that a certain Presidential candidate was more concerned with winning a popularity contest among those who didn't share his social agenda but did share his skin tone than he was with ensuring that California's LGBT community was treated as having FULL equality under the law, instead of the "separate but equal" treatment accorded through "civil unions" and "domestic partnerships".
"Marriage" is no more the province of religion than the right of free speech. I mean, is everyone aware that there are a number of religions and religious denominations that prohibit their ministers/pastors/whatever from performing interfaith marriages? It seems to me that an interfaith marriage involves religion to the extreme but a Jew cannot be prohibited from marrying a Catholic and a Methodist can't be barred from marrying a Southern Baptist. The local house of worship is under no obligation to perform the ceremony, but only the engaged couple and their family have any real say in whether they actually, you know, GET MARRIED.
Let the religious nuts who are so outraged over same-sex marriage go to hell as far as I'm concerned. If they spent half as much of their time and energy fighting divorce and marital infidelity as they do same-sex marriage, maybe the institution of marriage wouldn't be as troubled as it is.

I am not gay. I don't know any gay people (that I am aware of). And I think that the Iowa Supreme Court got it right.
