OMG, Larry! `Adnan Thabit?! He was part of a group of former well-known Ba`thist thugs, including many from the Mukhabarat, who were actively sought out and recruited by the Americans. They were completely funded, and commanded, by the Americans as so-called Special Commando units (or something like that). It was well understood that they were, at least in part, an element of the "El Salvador option", and among their herd of American "advisors" were certain individuals who had been involved with Negroponte in very "questionable" activities in Latin America, including recruiting and working with death squads. A lot of those guys, including General `Adnan, were pretty notorious during their days as Saddam's thugs.

In his comments around General `Adnan and that group, either Petraeus is being quite, quite disingenuous, or else he had no clue what was really going on right in front of his eyes. Either way it is not a positive for him.

Around the same time was also the American occupation-formed-and-"advised" "Wolf Brigade", for all practical purposes a "death squad", that became famous for the awful TV program called something like "Terrorism in the Grip of Justice" that appeared on the American-created-staffed-funded-and-controlled Al `Iraqiyya TV network (should have been called Al Amrikiyya). The program showed supposed "terrorists", who had clearly been abused, sometimes badly beaten, and probably also tortured, confessing to a variety of offenses, some of which were completely ludicrous, such as having homosexual orgies in mosques. The ostensible purpose of the TV show was to influence the Iraqi public against the resistance by presenting the "terrorists" as the lowest of all possible low-lifes - a pretty transparent, and transparently stupid American P.R. stunt if you were far enough from the fray to see the big picture.

Petraeus is either dissembling, or he is incompetent, or both. Perhaps he is both dissembling and incompetent because his real focus is on his own self aggrandizement and not on the job at hand.

Fox Snooze is on the case of the missing weapons.

Sayeth General Petraeus:

"We <strong>believe</strong> those weapons all certainly were given to Iraqi units," he told Fox News Radio.

More faith based leadership from the Bush Government.

<a href="http://www.turkishpress.com/news.asp?id=188634&s=&i=&t=US_commander_says_190,000_missing_US_guns_went_to_Iraqi_forces" rel="nofollow">Good luck, good night.

Michael O’Hanlon and Kenneth Pollack were on Lou Dobbs again tonight, and I'll have to wait for the 3am repeat to see if they use the same song and dance as they've been running around with so far. But I'm more curious to see where their supposed criticism of the "war" was in the historical record.

But it was interesting to hear Olbermann last night discuss the missing ak47s and such with Wesley Clark and the question asked, "are we equally responsible for arming the insurgency as we accuse Iran of doing?"

I guess I'm often more and more stunned to believe that these guys running the war on Iraq haven't shown a single bit of foresight since they took to the task of destroying the country. What did they think would happen when they disbanded the existing forces? What did they think the citizens were going to do, greet us a liberators with chocolate and dates? What did they think Abu Ghraib or the attack of Falluja would do? warm them up to us?

Larry, were there any military advisors who had a plan that might have worked and yet was ignored, or has this been a full debacle on all levels? I can't believe we have that many military leaders who are so lemming headed that we had no clear vision forward, even if this had been a "just war" (whatever that is).

thanks for the post and the song, nice addition.
