Senator Byrd [D-WV] has introduced two amendments to the 2008 Defense Appropriations bill.
From Iran Nuclear Watch:
The amendments would prohibit funding provided by the bill to be used for military operations or activities against any other country without explicit Congressional authorization. The text of both amendments is identical and I’m unsure why two identical amendments were submitted. The amendments do provide exceptions for certain activities. Though the amendments employ a non-country-specific approach similar to Senator Byrd’s S. Res. 39, the enactment of either amendment could prevent a military confrontation with Iran.

and according to ( c )
“Not later than 48 hours after determining…blah blah…submit…blah blah…justification for the determination.”
…and claim the justification already exists because Fox News says based on Cheney’s information that Iran has been attacking U.S. Armed Forces in Iraq.

So I said yes and he sent me an official email from his office..
although it would be alittle wierd for the GOP to invite me to such a prestigious event i thought what the heck..Once in a lifetime opportunity.so go for it..And then I started thinking..Man, I might get 30 sec’s to get a picture taken with him or briefly speak to Bush.. So knowing time was short i drafted copy after copy of the fewest words possible to convey what i thought.. ( without getting dragged out by my ass by the secret service ) I wanted to be polite but firm in my couple of seconds.
It went something like: Mr. President, All of America was behind you after 9-11 but you have really made a mistake by your war policies and hurt our country. I was jacked up and was really going to do this thing.. I’m telling everyone what is about to happen!
So the RSVP came in my mail box and i began filling it out.. It was 5 pages long for information..jeez..ok
whatever.. I came to the last page and it instructed me to mail a check for 25,000!!! let me repeat that..25,000.. for Dinner!! payable to the GOP.
I feel off my chair..My big chance to met Bush..My Wife is laughing going.. ‘idiot, they want your friggin money!!’…

An important vote to end the Iraq war was held today and defeated…the Feingold-Reid bill got only 28 senators voting for it. Obama missed this one again. [In fairness, I heard that Obama missed the Kyl-Lieberman vote because it was called early, while he was campaigning out-of-state. But I forget where I saw that?]
From Taylor Marsh, the nays included: Webb, because he reportedly wants a “clean” appropriations bill.
Voice of America and Fiasco at Persian Service.
There is no need to attack Iran IF the Bush administration pays attention:
Millions of dollars are spent in Persian Service of Voice of America but the end result is nothing but scandalous way of cockamamie management and programming.
It is hard to believe but the Persian Service which supposed to be an organization to convey the policy of the U.S. has become a free platform for hard-line terrorist group of communists who attack the United Sates!
I have the documents in writings to prove that these were done with the full knowledge of the management.
I used to work there and as I said before, I have all the documents in writings.
The manager is a woman called Sheila Gandji who can not read and write Persian. Therefore, in order to hide this shortcoming from the higher management, she has hired an eighty something man called Kambiz Mahmoudi who has a lengthy background as crook and in charlatanism.
You expect a doctor to be in charge of a medical clinic. You expect an engineer to be in charge of an engineering department. You expect a plumber to fix your plumbing.
So why do you expect a person who has no education in Iran and doesn’t know the language of that country should be in charge of publicity, literature or politic for such position?
Sheila Gandji falsely pretended and presented herself as educated with background in journalism. These are absolute fabrications. Nobody in Iranian communities inside of the country or outside has any knowledge about her being a journalist, then and now.
Her partner, Kambiz Mahmoudi is a hateful and despicable person whose activities as crook are widely known through out Iran. Can’t the U.S. government appoint somebody without such shameful background and baggage?
Don’t think that this is a personal vendetta.

Senator Byrd’s limitation is unconstitutional. Once the funds are appropriated, the commander-in-chief can use them as he chooses. If he launches a strike against, say, Iran, the congress has no remedy other than impeachment. It lacks the courage, the votes, and above all the time to avail itself of that remedy.

Note that this was a poll commisioned exclusively by Fox News, a known ‘unbalanced’ advocate of Bush policy, which means it might also be viewed as being commisioned for the purpose of using the results as ammunition.
Note also, Fox’s link to the “poll results” only links to questions 41 - 44; 41 is the ‘losing the war’ question and 42 - 44 have something to do with prayer.
Would it be patriotic to trust Fox, when Fox doesn’t even trust it’s own with the complete results of it’s polling?
It is obvious on its face that the world, including the United States itself, would be better off if the U.S. loses in Iraq. I have been saying that since before the beginning. Had the U.S. succeeded in Iraq, they would have very quickly moved on to Iran, Syria, and the rest of the countries on the neocons’ “list”, and done so to the increasing detriment of everyone in the world.
This has nothing to do with “patriotism” or lack thereof. It has to do with an awareness of what this kind of unbridled aggression combined with unequaled power would do not only to the world, but also domestically to America and Americans.
In any case, as I have said here before, I hold the view firmly that being a member of the human race, and a citizen of the planet trumps nationalistic fervor (aka “patriotism”) every step of the way. That is particularly true in this day and age in which all of our fates throughout the world are inextricably linked.
YBN you done it again, you have pointed out how they will justify the attack on Iran. It is now all about winning the “hearts and minds of the people”.
For that they will use a similar strategy, get the majority to be for what the people want then, at the last minute, do the opposite. The difference between children’s health and war with Iran is children’s health is ongoing, whereas the other is final. Iran will have implications that will make the World shudder and President Bush and his cronies will spawn universal hatred as well meaning as they feel they are. I believe Iran will be attacked by accident and then “what the hell”.
The stakes have been raised which offers a lot more possibilities concering potential outcomes. I feel even the sane are preparing for insanity and nothing will turn this around. What is will be. Short of interplanetary interference (or the war of the Worlds) there is nothing on offer, as things stand, that could divert the inevitable.

I think it’s worth considering what the meaning is of winning the hearts and minds of the people. There’s a definite pattern in the Bush/Cheney WH showing that one of their highest priorities, if not #1, is a claim of higher authority.
I don’t think they view this authority as something gained by concensus. Wide concensus is similar to cooperation, which is not the same as authority. Authority has more meaning to an authoritarian if it’s gained by prevailing over significant objection; because it’s a way of emphasizing the strength of the authority.
In spite of polls showing high disapproval of Bush’s handling of the war, Congress is reluctant to force change; or at least reluctant to force it by direct confrontation - i.e. impeachment, withdrawing authorization, etc. This seems to be because Congress fears character assasination through association with “not supporting the troops”, which they fear might result in voters at re-election time, irrationally deferring to presidential authority.
The next batter up at the plate is funding/de-funding, you know, a switch hitter. In spite of polls showing high approval for reducing funding, there’s also low approval for eliminating it, even though de-funding is arguably more effective.
In light of all this, I seriously wonder about the possibility of endless funding negotiations, defaulting to a virtual result of non-funding, in turn resulting in forcing Bush’s hand.
I think the future is less than clear in this area. Attacking Iran, either directly or by Israeli proxy, might create enough urgent fear for Bush to claim even more authority. On the other hand, the variables for failure include not only a strong reaction of public and congressional disapproval, but also the possibilities of outright insurrection, possibly even within some elements of the military itself.
Odds anyone?

The exhibition will be opened on Seprember 16th at the St.Petersburg State Academic Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture n.a. I.E. Repin. One of the mottos of the exhibition: Calligraphy is the art of words expressing .
The framework of the exhibition will include the works of the well-known calligraphers from Russia, Belarus, Ukraine. To clearly understand the international level of calligraphy there will be organized a special exposition of the calligraphic schools of Europe, Baltic states, USA, Israel, China, Japan, Cyria and UAE.
The framework of the exhibition will also include the museum exposition displaying the old manuscripts of different centuries. Children and their parents, and all the comers will take pleasure of the calligraphic lessons and interesting lectures, while the professionals will take the opportunity to brush up their skills at the master-classes.
On May 14th at 2 pm there will be organized the presentation of the International Calligraphic Exhibition at Crocus Expo. At the presentation one will see a part of the pearls of the calligraphic gallery, which at a quick pace is added by new works and authors.
