Diego Garcia Secretly Readied for Bunker Busters

Via Cliff Schecter, from the Herald UK:

The US is secretly upgrading special stealth bomber hangars on the British island protectorate of Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean in preparation for strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities, according to military sources.

The improvement of the B1 Spirit jet infrastructure coincides with an “urgent operational need” request for £44m to fit racks to the long-range aircraft.

That would allow them to carry experimental 15-ton Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP) bombs designed to smash underground bunkers buried as much as 200ft beneath the surface through reinforced concrete.

The £44m, or over $88 million, the Herald refers to was included in Bush’s recent $196.4 billion supplemental war funding request sent to Congress. The $88 million would be used to modify B2 stealth bombers to carry 30,000-pound bunker busters.

Perhaps bunker busters such as this one:

Engineers examine a test penetrator, Stars and Stripes

Ward at DefenseTech writes: Saturday “Stars and Stripes ran an article about the Pentagon’s request for $88 million to fund the development of a ‘deep-earth-bunker-buster.’ ”

According to the article . . .

At 30,000 pounds and 20 feet long, the mass of the bomb makes it three and a half times more powerful than the most powerful weapon in the Air Force’s inventory. The bomb carries 6,000 pounds of high explosives….

The MOP’s job is to destroy deeply buried and what the military calls “hardened” targets, or those specifically reinforced to survive strikes with high explosives.

The bomb is capable of burrowing 60 meters through 5,000 pounds per square inch (psi) of reinforced concrete, or 8 meters through 10,000 psi reinforced concrete….

The budget request is part of an amendment to the fiscal 2008 defense budget supplemental request that the White House submitted Monday to Congress.

The money is in two parts: $83.5 million for continuing the development of the MOP weapon itself, including a “technology demonstration” sponsored by DTRA that would conclude at some point in fiscal 2008; and another $4.2 million to modify the B-52 bomber as a launching platform, Air Force spokeswoman Vicki Stein told Stars and Stripes on Wednesday.

According to the Pentagon, the MOP is an “urgently needed, critical global strike capability to fight the war on terrorism.”

Air Force leaders say the system is not being developed specifically for a pre-emptive strike against Iran.

“It’s not specifically geared at an individual country,” Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. T. Michael Moseley told reporters Sept. 24. “It’s a capability discussion.”

An $88 million capability discussion?…

And heaven forbid that we actually threaten . . . Iran. (Oh, no. I said that which shall not be said when hitting Congress up for large sums of money that will be used to justify the service’s existence in the nearer term. My bust, general. Or should I say, my bunker bust, general?)

Do we put anything past the Bush administration?

Comment by J | 2007-10-30 13:51:23

do we really have a ‘choice’, especially given the fact that our congress has substituted constitutionally authorized impeachment backbone with cave-into-the-tyrant mush? the jcs has the constitutional authority to physically remove bush and/or cheney from their positions of power when they commit crimes against our constitution. but to date no current and immediate past jcs seems to take their oaths to our constitution seriously, and in so doing have abdicated their officer responsibilities they swore to uphold and adhere to. to sit on one hands like the jcs is doing, opens them up to future war crimes prosecutions on the international stage.

what choice do we have with we have when we have a awol congress and jcs? armed revolt like our ancestors did? don’t see such happening as our today’s society has become a dumbed down one who accepts tyranny with a shoulder shrug. sad for future generations.

So we’re about to commit another war crime. Does anyone running for office give a shit?

He is Rear-Admiral Grantham of the US Navy and his visit is followed by a top secret Anglo-American survey of the island for a military base—one of the biggest American bases outside the United States: what the Pentagon in Washington calls an indispensable platform for policing the world. Today on Diego Garcia there are more than 2,000 American troops, anchorage for 30 ships, including nuclear-armed aircraft carriers, a satellite spy station and two of the world’s longest runways from which B-52 and Stealth bombers have attacked Afghanistan and Iraq.

Through the vapour haze as the bombers take off you can just see, on the other side of the lagoon, the broken villages: the houses claimed by the jungle, some still with their furniture, pictures and other personal belongings that were left the day the people were expelled.

Roaming wild are their donkeys and dogs that are now feral, but there are few of these descendants of the islanders’ pets. As the Americans began to build their billion-dollar base 30 years ago Sir Bruce Greatbatch, KCVO, CMG, MBE, governor of the Seychelles, ordered all the dogs on Diego Garcia to be killed. More than 1,000 pets were gassed with exhaust fumes. They put the dogs in a furnace where the people worked, Lisette Talatte, in her 60s, told me, and when their dogs were taken away in front of them our children screamed and cried.

Sir Bruce had been given responsibility for what the Americans called cleansing and sanitising the islands; and the killing of the pets was taken by the islanders as a warning.
Article Seven of the new International Criminal Court leaves little doubt that what was done to these gentle, tenacious people was a crime against humanity. As Bush’s bombers take off from their homeland, his collaborator in Downing Street might reflect on that.

the problem I see ladies and gentlemen is that we’re still living in a fantasy land where we think we still live in a functional democracy.
Allow me to submit my fellow countrymen the following proposition which may very well upset your palate

We are no longer living in a Republic, we are now living in an aspiring Empire…G-d help us all…so all that is left to be determine is from which party shall arise the tyrannt that will lead this empire to is… /ahem“greatness.”

Bombing for freedom one more time. I just heard a poll on the radio. 52% of the American public support bombing Iran to prevent them from getting “nukular” weapons. So I guess that once again the propaganda machine is working and you can fool some of the people all of the time. At least often enough to pull off the game plan, especially when the so-called “opposition” won’t stand up.

So it’s one more spiral down into the pit, and there’s no way back out.

Comment by montag | 2007-10-30 17:02:38

If this is just “a capability discussion” (mighty expensive discussion, btw), why wasn’t it included in the regular appropriations budget, instead of being tucked into the supplemental war spending bill?

I see that as simply an indication that this administration sees supplemental war spending as fungible and not subject to audit. After all, there’s not yet been any accounting of any of the supplemental monies to date. These wars are also the first to be funded entirely through supplemental requests. Even the Vietnam war was on the books a year after the Gulf of Tonkin resolution.

You know, I gotta tell ya, even though no one can say with certainty what Bush will do regarding Iran, given his lust for authority and his tendency to go with Cheney’s recomendations (which keeps Bush’s desk clear, and Bush’s brain empty); it really seems like a very wise thing for Congress to do is err on the side of caution, and do whatever they have to do, to pre-emptively keep Bush from launching a military attack on Iran.

Public polls be damned. The consequences are really very serious; not only in direct human toll, but also in economic toll, which will translate into even further human toll.

I know, they won’t do it, but I feel I must express my opinion to them anyway, even if it’s for no other reason than to be able to say I did.

Once again, remind me, why is it exactly that Congress thinks they can afford to risk being wrong?

Hmmm. Has Cliff ever been to DGAR?

No significant permanent hangars there as of my last trip in 2004. Temp shelters for (one assumes) B-2’s to keep these frail birds out of the weather which, although idyllic in The World’s Most Exlusive Sport Fishing Resort, is just the same as being at sea. More humidity and salt than you would believe, Makes Florida look arid.

(see B-2 Shelter System [B2SS]
Extra Large Deployable Aircraft Hangar Systems)

Only ONE runway at DGAR, Sports Fans, unless someone widened the atoll recently.

Oh, and that runway was originally built for UK V-bombers in a basing scheme that included DGAR, Oman and Singapore, to give you an idea how long ago it was.

Should you decide to Google Earth it, remember to enter it as “Diego Garcia, BIOT,” lest you get a satellite view of a neighborhood near the Alamo.

There is lotsa nasty stuff in The Lagoon at Diego Garcia, One learns not to ask too many questions when there.

And, although the Lagoon might have sufficient space to moor an Aircraft Carrier, transit through Main Channel might require a VERY large amount of “personal lubricant.” Handling aircraft carriers requires several more tugs than reside there. The Army’s LMSR’s are a handful getting in and out, and often don’t.

One of my trips there, while catching hot popcorn, untaxed Scotch and the Afternoon Movie, I and me droogs speculated on just how many Soviet Navy missile boats had the place, “taped,” down to the centimeter.

FYI, I “Virtual Earth’ed” Diego and caught a nice pic of a RIVET JOINT, an airplane rarely photographed in the wild…

I personally walked right up to a COMPASS CALL there… date deleted …

And, finally, DGAR is a Shuttle alternate emergency landing site.

Diego is a great place for about 30 days, if you like quiet and don’t mind savage competition for the few women there. Buck-toothed Navy enlisted girls really live up the abundance of men there, knowing that they are only one airline ticket from being “Nothing SPecial” once again.

More luaus than Don Ho’s wake.

For the next 30 to 45 days you really get into ham radio and fishing for Wahoo. I caught so many Wahoo there, I invented “Wahoo Helper.”

On your hundreth day, you anxiously await your travel docs and news of your Relief. Getting a haircut becomes the high point of your week.

By Day 120, you aren’t even changing your socks and underwear, for fear that your Luck will turn bad and you’ll be there an extra Travel cycle. You imagine that The Charter leaves without you due to a Clerical Error.

Even Fujairah seems attractive.

It’s the UK Herald reporting this. Actually, I did google for images of Diego Garcia and found pictures of all sorts of planes there, including B2 bombers, and two air strips. The US has a naval base there as well.

You can see the two air strips here:

The long piece of pavement which parallels a runway and is the same length is called a “taxiway.” Usually, it is narrower than the appurtenant runway and its pavement may be lighter, as the Taxiway is not subject to the impact of landing aircraft…just planes trundling along it on their way to and from the runway(s).

When there are multiple, parallel runways, they will usually be designated “L” and “R”, for Left and Right.

Your ref pic shows a BUFF (B-52) on the Runway at DGAR and a B-2 on a Taxiway.

DEAD GIVEAWAY: The runway will have a two-digit number at each end (00 – 35). A taxiway is uaually unmarked or otherwise marked with Arabic numerals and letters.

Fred,
The Global Security link mentions this:

The B-2 Shelters
In mid-September 2002 it was reported that the US had requested permission to build special shelters for four to six B-2 bombers at Diego Garcia. The portable climate-controlled shelters take about a month to erect. According to American Spaceframe Fabricators, the contractor that designed and constructed the B-2 Shelter System, two shelters had been constructed by late November and two additional structures would not be completed until June 2003 due to lack of existing concrete foundation.

So, how would that contradict what the BBC/Herald reports in 2007?

Comment by Fred C. Dobbs | 2007-11-01 03:14:22

It doesn’t contradict their existence. Per a satellite photo about 4 weeks ago (latest I can grab) there are four B-2 portable, air-transportable shelters on the concrete.

“Modifying” these may be something of a mis-nomer. In all likelihood, all that is really being done is moving a larger bomb-handling nechanism (dollies, hoists, etc) to the island to enhance the ability of the existing gear to handle a much heavier ordnance package.

My point (lost in my pedantic blather) is: any significant construction work on Diego Garcia requires months and months to plan and execute. No railroads go there; no gravel and aggregate pits are there. Water for making concrete is in short supply. Lumber and plywood for falseworks (forms) and reonfrcing steel (rebar) are non-existent.

Exverything needed must be either air-transportable (meaning very, very light) or imported aboard purpose-chartered vessel(s).

Chartering, loading the staged materials, sailing to the island, un-loading the ship (”anchorage” and “harbor” are not synonymous in the case of DGAR…as in, hardly any cranes, almost no stevedores and longshoremen)
and bringing in the labor, in my 1990’s era experience there would be AT LEAST a 150 day affair, and much more likely to be 210 days.

One project I was involed with there required creosote pilings from the US (New Orleans load), Portland cement from South Africa (loaded in Durban) and sand, gravel and aggregate from Australia, loaded at Darwin.

All moved on one ship.

What would have been a six day Discharge of cargo in even a half-assed port in any civilized place required more than a month.

And that was just to get the trash onto the
dock to START the job…not counting the time at sea going to get all this material (31,000 NM total sea voyage @ 400 NM per day).

Getting labor to the place is another nightmare, as is housing, feeding and amusing same.

So, probably the “modifications to the hangars” is the addition of some wheeled doo-dads built by someone like Stuart and Stephenson (Houston) that will fit through the doors of and be lift-able by a C-5A Galaxy.

Cliff is trying to make it sound like the hammers are swinging, the concrete mixers are rolling and the torches are running night and day when, in fact, it is far more likely, IMHO, to be much, much lower key than this.

Comment by Leslie | 2007-11-01 12:40:17

Yeah, GlobalSecurity.org had a photo of the hangars when I was googling images prior to posting.

I don’t know the logistics of it. Clearly, from the pix, Diego Garcia is a tiny atoll.

But don’t you find it troubling that the Bushies are putting B2 stealth bombers there at all and making accommodations for bunker busters? They’ve been doing this since 2002? They don’t need these things for Afghanistan or Iraq.

Comment by Fred C. Dobbs | 2007-11-03 19:53:48

>>> They don’t need these things for Afghanistan or Iraq.

Might have been handy at Tora Bora.

Let there be no mistake: the purpose of our facility at Diego Garcia is to fill a naval power vacuum in the Indian Ocean, and, secondly, to further the Air Force mission in the region.

If the Iranians voted to be annexed as the 51st state and the various Iraqis had a mass Love-In, DGAR would still be there to support the DoD’s mission to prevent the interdiction of oil transportation by sea from The Gulf to Western Europe, Japan, and, to a lesser degree, the US.

And, if the USAF REALLY wanted to drop these blivets on Iran or Kalamazoo, it follows that they wouldn’t first ship the boms to the theater, then up-load them to the airframes.

Let me speculate here that, in all likelihood (from what I know of this from a number of colleagues who know more about the B-2 operations than I’d care to), the bombs would be up-loaded at Whiteman AFB (home of the B-2), flown directly to the theatre and dropped, recovering the aircraft at DGAR for servicing preparatory to a return trip to CONUS.

This ain’t like hanging iron bombs on Phantoms or F-15’s. These planes are built to carry heavy ordnance around the world.

Maybe, we’ll finally do what should have been done in 1979; turn that dump into a parking lot.

WHY????, shreik the hand-wringers…

Taking of the US embassy was an act of war.

Building a nuclear weapon capability.

Killing GI’s in Iraq.

And finally, its just a good idea whose time has come.

Comment by montag | 2007-10-30 19:59:21

Taking of the US embassy was an act of war.

Ah, well, let’s look at the history. That embassy was very likely seized because the 1953 coup, inspired by MI6 and carried out by the CIA, was run out of the American embassy. In a way, I can understand the tactical motive in doing so, because of that past history.

Building a nuclear weapon capability.

Umm, did we do the same thing with Israel, Pakistan, India, South Africa, Brazil? With the exception of the latter two, all now have nuclear weapons, and are not members of the NPT. And “capability” is not the same thing as either having them or using them. If knowing how to build one were a reason for unilateral bombing, there would be a lot of places gone (my house, too, for that matter).

Killing GI’s in Iraq.

So far, there’s no proof of that–only propaganda. And, without much of a stretch in logic, we could say the same about Bush and Cheney, who have done much better at killing our soldiers than Iran could.

And finally, its just a good idea whose time has come.

With logic like that, the rest of the world could say the very same about us. Iran hasn’t invaded another country since the late 18th century. When was the last time we invaded another country? Iran, whether the UN-haters admit it or not, is complying with the NPT according to the IAEA. They permit snap inspections of their nuclear facilities. We do not permit such inspections. More to the point, we’re the ones threatening them, rather than the other way around.

Face it, this is all part of structured policy of the Bush administration to enable our multinationals to get oil at the cheapest possible extractive cost and to control the geopolitics of oil. The 1953 coup resulted in a huge windfall for U.S. oil companies, and the loss of that in 1979 with the renationalizing of Iranian oil production is at the heart of this bellicosity on our part.

We can buy oil on the open market, just like everyone else, but it’s so much more profitable to just take it, especially when the U.S. taxpayer is paying for the army which is at the oil companies’ disposal.

If we take your advice, we’re on the path to our own destruction.

Remember the current calculus says its ok to kill up to 30 civilians to get a bad guy. Of course you label them all insurgents in the report.

If there’s a flap, you pay the market price for dead Arabs. In Iraq I hear its $1,200.

So what’s a dead Iranian civilian family of five worth? That is, if they are successful in causing a flap.

I’m sure there’s numbers on all these things. because that’s what important – the numbers, right?

I can’t picture the Bushiew waiting to attack Iran just becaues the bombers aren’t ready. You go to war with the Air Force you have.

US Reported In “Panic” After Chemtrail Planes Forced Down In India, Nigeria

Russian Military Analysts are reporting in the Kremlin today that US Military Forces are “panicked” over the forced landings ordered by Indian and Nigerian Air Forces of two Ukrainian AN-124 aircraft [photo top left] operated by the United States Air Force and based at their gigantic, but secretive, Diego Garcia air base located in the Indian Ocean.

According to these reports, China’s People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) notified both India and Nigerian intelligence officials about the presence of these US operated Ukrainian aircraft over their growing concerns of the United States spreading of “biological agents” throughout our Earth’s atmosphere, and which some Chinese officials are warning is an American-European attempt to conduct mass genocide via the spread of the H1N1 swine flu virus which has put the entire Global population at risk.

The first of these aircraft to be ordered down, these reports continue, was over India when a US operated AN-124 changed its call sign from civilian to military as it was preparing to enter Pakistani air space, and which triggered an immediate response from the IAF who forced it to land in Mumbai, and the second one was forced down by Nigerian fighter jets who promptly arrested both the crew and the plane itself.

Most strange about the reports filed by Indian and Nigerian intelligence agencies about these aircraft, other than the armaments they were carrying, were their waste disposal systems that these reports say could hold in excess of 45,000 kg (100,000 pounds) and from which a “technologically sophisticated” network of nano-pipes led to the trailing edges of the wings and horizontal stabilizers for “dispersing” the contents of the waste tanks in an “aerial-type mist”.

“Furious” demands made by the United States to both India and Nigeria for the release of their planes led to Indian Defense officials allowing the AN-124 they had captured to be released. Nigeria, however, had to be “forcefully persuaded” to release its captured US plane when after its initial refusal to do so than had one of their major oil pipelines blown up by one of the many American backed terrorist groups operating in their country.

To the many, and conflicting, issues surrounding these chemtrails it is not in our expertise to examine in depth, other than to note that the American based Sunshine Project organization in a 2002 accused the US military of “conducting a chemical weapons research and development program in violation of international arms control law”, and stated:

“JNLWD’s [US Department of Defense's Joint Non-Lethal Weapons Directorate] secret program is not focusing on highly lethal agents such as VX or sarin. Rather, the emphasis is on “non-lethal” chemical weapons that incapacitate. JNLWD’s science advisors define “non-lethal” as resulting in death or permanent injury in 1 in 100 victims.(1) JNLWD’s Research Director told a US military magazine “We need something besides tear gas, like calmatives, anesthetic agents, that would put people to sleep or in a good mood.” (2) These weapons are intended for use against “potentially hostile civilians”, in anti-terrorism operations, counterinsurgency, and other military operations.

The major focus of JNLWD’s operation is on the use of drugs as weapons, particularly so-called “calmatives”, a military term for mind-altering or sleep inducing chemical weapons.”

Curious to note about this secret US Military programme to release upon its citizens “calmative agents” is that it appears to be working as no other Nation in the World is more docile and complacent about its destruction than these Americans, who, in just one example, allowed their presidential vote for Vice President Al Gore to be stolen from them by George Bush in their 2000 election, and, even worse, fail to even notice that their current president, Barak Obama, is continuing Bush’s outlawed policies, including one of the most dangerous for these people allowing the US government to hold any of them without trial forever should they be branded “terrorists”.

But, to the worst fears of our World about these new events, and as we have previously reported on, and should China’s Intelligence Agencies be correct in their reports about the United States’ plan for mass Global genocide, we can read as reported on by noted Austrian investigative journalist Jane Burgermeister, who this past week filed criminal charges with the FBI against the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations (UN) of which is said:

“In her charges, Burgermeister presents evidence of acts of bioterrorism that is in violation of U.S. law by a group operating within the U.S. under the direction of international bankers who control the Federal Reserve, as well as WHO, UN and NATO. This bioterrorism is for the purpose of carrying out a mass genocide against the U.S. population by use of a genetically engineered flu pandemic virus with the intent of causing death. This group has annexed high government offices in the U..S.

Specifically, evidence is presented that the defendants, Barack Obama, President of the U.S, David Nabarro, UN System Coordinator for Influenza, Margaret Chan, Director-General of WHO, Kathleen Sibelius, Secretary of Department of Health and Human Services, Janet Napolitano, Secretary of Department of Homeland Security, David de Rotschild, banker, David Rockefeller, banker, George Soros, banker, Werner Faymann, Chancellor of Austria, and Alois Stoger, Austrian Health Minister, among others, are part of this international corporate criminal syndicate which has developed, produced, stockpiled and employed biological weapons to eliminate the population of the U.S. and other countries for financial and political gain.

The charges contend that these defendants conspired with each other and others to devise, fund and participate in the final phase of the implementation of a covert international bioweapons program involving the pharmaceutical companies Baxter and Novartis. They did this by bioengineering and then releasing lethal biological agents, specifically the “bird flu” virus and the “swine flu virus” in order to have a pretext to implement a forced mass vaccination program which would be the means of administering a toxic biological agent to cause death and injury to the people of the U.S. This action is in direct violation of the Biological Weapons Anti-terrorism Act.

Burgermeister’s charges include evidence that Baxter AG, Austrian subsidiary of Baxter International, deliberately sent out 72 kilos of live bird flu virus, supplied by the WHO in the winter of 2009 to 16 laboratories in four counties. She claims this evidence offers clear proof that the pharmaceutical companies and international government agencies themselves are actively engaged in producing, developing, manufacturing and distributing biological agents classified as the most deadly bioweapons on earth in order to trigger a pandemic and cause mass death.”

To the American people themselves, perhaps, the worst is about to befall them as new reports from the US are stating that their Centers For Disease Control (CDC) has ordered an unprecedented 600 million doses of swine flu vaccine to be forced upon these people who under their present Swine Flu Public Health Emergency have no choice but to take these vaccines or face 10 years in prison.

What makes these 600 million swine flu vaccines ordered by the US government for their people most curious is that, as it stands right now, it is IMPOSSIBLE for any vaccine to be produced for the H1N1 swine flue virus as it is continuing to evolve as new reports from Brazil clearly show and, most ominously, even from the United States itself where an Oregon child “identified only as “younger than 5 years old,” died June 15, and infection with the swine flu virus was confirmed by the Oregon State Public Health Laboratory Tuesday. The child had “no known underlying medical conditions and a two-day history of fever,” and was not hospitalized”.

It goes without saying, of course, that these American people have no idea about the over year-long process involved in making any type of influenza vaccine once the virus stops mutating, but then again, no one ever accused these peoples of being anything other than the sheep-like simpletons they’ve become as they continue to watch the destruction of their once great Nation at the very hands of those they believe are helping them.

And to those, like us, who continue to shout true warnings at them? As absurd as it may sound, it remains the sad fact that those telling them truth are called liars, and those lying to them are believed. Never once do any of them question what their leaders and propaganda media tell them to think or believe.
