I am challenging the so called “progressive” blogs about whether they are all ready “self” censoring when it comes to writing about the I/P conflict or challenging the I lobby. I believe the progressive blogosphere is practicing ’self censorship” and shutting down debate on this issue. They will write about all sorts of issues but will generally not touch this issue. Why?

Of late, our own Seattle Times has been putting a deserved spotlight on the FCC through a series called “The Democracy Papers” and a blog by Ryan Blethen, son of Publisher Frank Blethen, that tells us the American press is being decimated by consolidation. Civic debate, at least in and on the mainstream media outlets, is controlled by fewer and fewer players.

I wish I could be optimistic on this topic. Years ago, desktop publishing was going to offset the power of “big media.” Now blogging is the hope. MySpace is cool, but more so before Rupert Murdoch bought it. Facebook just got valued at $15 billion — it, too, is now big business.

It’s all a bit weird when we’re rooting for Google in a contest over spectrum.

Yes, spectrum. That’s just one area where the FCC plays God, setting the rules, picking winners and losers, tilting the field where billions of dollars are at stake. The regulation of our lines of communication is dressed up as advancing the economy and public access to information and ideas, but it’s all a matter of how you define “economy.” If it’s about protecting prior investment by incumbent players (the broadcast industry or the cable industry), then you are less likely to give a free pass to newcomers …

Seattle crowd blasts FCC on big media

Don’t let big media get bigger.

That was the overwhelming message an overflow crowd delivered to the Federal Communications Commission Friday night at a hearing on media ownership at Seattle’s Town Hall.

Four FCC commissioners heard it from Gov. Christine Gregoire and Attorney General Rob McKenna, and from young media-reform activists costumed as “media-consolidation zombies” — a dig at what many perceive as the FCC’s willingness to do industry’s bidding.

“You become a zombie when your voice isn’t heard,” said Monica Olsson, dressed as a zombie. “That’s what we’re here to stop.”

The FCC is reviewing rules that restrict how many local media outlets a single company can own. Among them: a 32-year-old regulation barring a company from owning a daily newspaper and TV or radio station in the same market.

Most media companies say the restrictions should be eased or eliminated. Many people who spoke Friday said they’re certain that’s what the FCC’s Republican majority already has decided to do.

If the FCC quickly proposes new rules, “you know your input was dismissed,” said Jonathan Adelstein, one the five-member commission’s two Democrats.

More than 200 people signed up to testify, almost all of them opposed to the proposed rules. …

I love love love this show. It makes me laugh so hard. And there’s a LOT of political humor throughout.

I must also say that NBC’s coordinated effort to talk about the environment and going green this past week was quite impressive. Not only did MSNBC, the Today Show, and other news programming feature “green” segments, the dramas did too. My daughter and I got in the habit of watching “ER” a couple years ago and, while it’s gotten pretty dumb for the past season or so, and I don’t watch regularly anymore, I did tape last night’s new episode — the “green” message is woven into the plotline. So that means that, months ago, when that script was being written, NBC already had this week planned out and got all the producers and writers on board. That’s really rather amazing.

Keith Olbermann even gave up throwing his script up in the air the other night. He put it in a recycling bin instead! Cute.

On Gonzo, I mean.

The 30 Rock is hilarious, and I gotta say, Al Gore is a pretty good actor!
