You Said You Want Cheney Impeachment Hearings? (+ Open Thread)

You can SIGN UP HERE. Via a Pennsylvania progressives’ site run by the very smart Jerry Policoff — and from PrchrLady! By the way, I hear this drive is spreading like wildfire at ThinkProgress, Raw Story, Daily Kos, Huffington Post, and other blogs:

Following the release of an online op-ed advocating for Cheney impeachment hearings by Representatives Robert Wexler (D-FL), Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) and Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), all Members of the House Judiciary Committee, Congressman Wexler has launched an ambitious online effort to mobilize support for immediate impeachment hearings for Vice President Dick Cheney.

Wexler, a senior member of the House Judiciary Committee, has launched www.WexlerWantsHearings.com to mobilize grass roots and netroots support from across the nation in order to increase pressure on Congress to hold hearings.

Jerry tells me that Rep. Wexler’s op-ed was turned down by the biggies like the New York Times and Washington Post. On his new site, Rep. Wexler also writes:

I was serving in Congress and on the Judiciary Committee for the ridiculous and politically motivated impeachment hearings of President Clinton. During that witch hunt Newt Gingrich, Tom Delay, and Ken Starr wasted a year and a half on investigations and hearings about President Clinton’s personal relations. However, this attempted coup d’etat by Republicans against President Clinton was not and should not be the standard of impeachment that was enshrined by the Founders in our Constitution. …

First, impeachment hearings are only proper when significant allegations exist that the President or Vice-President, or others civil officers, committed actions – within their official duties – that constitute ‘High Crimes and Misdemeanors.’ The allegations against Clinton – involving a personal affair - never reached this threshold. The serious charges against Cheney involve alleged crimes that are central to his duties of Vice-President; namely war and peace, the widespread violations of civil liberties, and the security of the United States and our covert agents.

Unlike the show trial put on by Republicans against President Clinton, a proper impeachment hearing would involve a fair and objective presentation of the facts without hyperbole or political gamesmanship. The hard evidence that is presented at the hearings will be judged fully both by Congress and the American people. The evidence alone will determine the outcome, and if it is determined that Vice President Cheney committed “High Crimes and Misdemeanors” he should be properly impeached and put on trial before the Senate.

After the Democratic Party regained control of Congress, many – myself included – thought that it might be possible to meet President Bush half-way on the large issues facing our nation. Unfortunately, Bush has been nothing more than an ideological obstacle. He has vetoed stem cell research. He has vetoed efforts to bring our troops home from Iraq. He vetoed children’s health care. So, the idea that we are somehow inhibiting Congress from passing our agenda by holding impeachment hearings – unfortunately – is a false argument.

Instead, I believe that we can both live up to our Constitutional obligation by holding hearings and pass a Democratic agenda. If President Bush perceives that the Democratic Congress is weak and unwilling to aggressively push our agenda – he will continue to veto legislation, such as children’s health care – that is supported by a majority of Americans. The only way to move a progressive Democratic agenda is by acting through strength and following through on our core principles. A Congress willing to stand up to the abuses of the Bush Administration through impeachment hearings will demonstrate a strength of will that will more likely convince Bush to accommodate on issues such as Iraq, health care, and energy and environmental issues.

I’m an interested observer here, with a couple of immediate questions — how big does a digital sign-up like this have to be to get things rolling, and how big would an impeachment be compared to the upcoming election?

Was this when he was buying rugs in the market?
Does the “high ranking member of al-Qaida in Iraq” have a name?

McCain also said he met with a “high ranking member of al-Qaida in Iraq” who told him that post-invasion lawlessness and images of prisoner abuse at Abu Ghraib helped recruit insurgents. The latter was “a great recruitment tool,” McCain said. “He said it and I believe it.”

I don’t recall this as part of the public edition of the Iran NIE.

Russia and Iran reached an agreement Thursday on a schedule for finishing construction of the Bushehr nuclear plant, which plays a central role in the international tensions over Iran’s nuclear program, Russian news agencies reported.
MOSCOW –A Russian contractor said Thursday that Moscow and Tehran have reached agreement on a schedule for completing construction of a nuclear power plant in southern Iran - a facility that plays a central role in international tensions over Tehran’s nuclear program

Lavrov spoke by phone Thursday with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice about “the continuation of diplomatic efforts on resolving the Iranian nuclear issue,” as well as Kosovo, the Foreign Ministry said.

Shmatko raised the prospect of creating a Russian-Iranian joint venture “to ensure security” at the Bushehr plant, according to the RIA-Novosti agency.

It’s Dumond, not Drummond.

Guess you(right wing website) guys care so *expletive* much that you get the name wrong all the time…
you know right wing sites are the only one to spell his name wrong, and did so for a very long time.

It isn’t helping the google searches on Huckabee now. Word is out.

Mike Huckabee should propose tax cuts for rapists, instead of freedom for rapists.
Then the GOP would vote for him in droves.

He would have lost an election in Arkansas to Jimmie Lou Fischer, only he had a compliant Scaife- and Murdoch-owned swath of protection from the issue in addition to Cox Cable, (swift boaters) helping keep the item off the airwavesso the Democratic candidate cranked up a direct mail campaign.

Huckabee used illegal methods to block that in the postal service.

That’s right, massive Federal Mail Fraud in the State he served office. Lucky for Huckabee the DoJ changed a prosecutor in his state and put a gag order on Republican lawbreaking prosecution… (Balloon Juice comment, right wingers)

Comment there isn’t spellchecked though.

The victims families speak:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S9fSvpf9aC4&NR=1

TinaBopperM (4 days ago) “As governor of Arkansas, Mike Huckabee had a hand in TWICE as many pardons and commutations as his three predecessors combined. Huckabee granted 1,033 pardons and commutations in his 10 1/2 years as governor of Arkansas. Bill Clinton, Frank White and Tucker granted 507 clemencies in the 17 1/2 years they served as governor. During his years as governor, Huckabee granted clemency an average of about once every four days.”

Back to topic:
Cheney should have already been Censured by now.

Though the amount of vote needed for that may be different, it would, by this time, allow Republicans a chance to distance selves from him. It would be entirely allowable as well, as he’s President of the Senate.

His censure would prohibit his speaking outside of Congress itself, where of course a Clause allows all free speech to Congress.

Comment by SusanUnPC | 2007-12-15 21:47:27

Dear lord. Great info, Mr. M. It’s amazing, though, that Huckabee has bowled over so many people that he’s leading in practically all the polls just because he comes across as warm and folksy — people don’t do the digging, and check these candidates out. In the cold hard light.

They want to believe in what they see, an affable, pleasant-looking man who seems a lot nicer and friendlier than the other candidates — it gives them hope. But that doesn’t make for a good president.

The younger son of Gov. Mike Huckabee and another teen were fired last month from jobs at a Boy Scout camp after the killing of a stray dog.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — David Huckabee, a son of Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee, was arrested at Little Rock’s airport Thursday after a federal X-ray technician detected a loaded Glock pistol in his carry-on luggage.

“I removed the bag and asked Mr. Huckabee if he knew what he had in the bag,” Little Rock police officer Arthur Nugent wrote in a report after being summoned to a security checkpoint. “He replied he did now.”

Huckabee, 26, later pleaded guilty in Little Rock District Court after being charged with possessing a weapon in a prohibited place. District Judge Lee Munson gave Huckabee a one-year suspended jail sentence and ordered him into 10 days of community service — which Huckabee can avoid by paying $100.

The Des Moines Register Endorses Clinton and McCain

… In explaining its support for Mrs. Clinton, The Register’s editorial pages said: “Readiness to lead sets her apart from a constellation of possible stars in her party, particularly Barack Obama, who also demonstrates the potential to be a fine president.”

“When Obama speaks before a crowd, he can be more inspirational than Clinton,” the editorial continued. “Yet, with his relative inexperience, it’s hard to feel as confident he could accomplish the daunting agenda that lies ahead.” …

Comment by SusanUnPC | 2007-12-15 22:30:11

From the Des Moines Register — and, fyi, this link takes you to two pages that explain the endorsements in full + to two videos:

… “With dissension at home and distrust abroad, as American troops continue to fight wars on two fronts, the times call for two essential qualities in the next American president,” the Register’s editorial board concluded. “Those qualities became the paramount considerations in making endorsements for the Democratic and Republican nominees in the 2008 Iowa caucuses.

“The times call for competence. Americans want their government to work again. The times call for readiness to lead. Americans want their country to do great things again. They’ll regain trust in their government when they see a president make that happen.” …

I wonder if had someone ghost write this artical. It smells like it.

Our experience in Iraq offers a valuable lesson for how to proceed in Iran. Since we overthrew Saddam, we have learned that we invaded an imaginary country, because we relied at the time on information that was out of date and on longtime exiles who exaggerated the good condition of Iraq’s infrastructure, the strength of its middle class, and the secular nature of its society. We would have received better information if we had had our own ambassador in Baghdad. Before we put boots on the ground elsewhere, we had better have wingtips there first.

I used to see a ray of hope whenever impeachment was mentioned. But after all of these years, the crimes of this administration, the way they change the rules, the laws, the constitution, the outrageousness they so easily getaway with…
It’s hard to believe that anything will come of it; yet I’ll sign-on for this one as well.

Comment by Mr.Murder | 2007-12-16 04:57:13

Attorney client privilege is something else the anti terrra crowd has trespassed, but Cheney could still have lawyers under Impeachment…

As for Huckabee, a flyer about his role in freeing Dumond was circulated in Arkansas, its delivery was withheld until after the election from postal distribution sites for some reason, despite being paid for and postdated…

Huckabee actually used his influence to stop delivery of direct mail, a Federal crime. You could probably contact the Fisher office. She’s since had a stroke similar to Sen. Reid’s and been released from the Hospital, but there’s a good chance her senior campaigners could help describe in full what happened.
For the record, four women he raped were part of the evidence a judge used in sentencing him so harshly. Three who wrote the Gov. personally, a fourth who had a Dumond confession included with her initial police report after he was found stalking her residence again that the rapist later recanted. A potential fifth was a teen he used an assault plea to get out of having a violent encounter with in a parking lot.

That’s not counting the person he beat to death with a claw hammer is an Oklahoma public park. That man was a ‘Nam veteran going to ask Dumond about a woman he knew that Wayne had an encounter with…

Dumond assaulted a woman who didn’t report the item in time for a police report, undergoing shock for two days, who contacted the court about the incident, it couldn’t be presented as trial evidence but it shared a timeline and locale with the man’s whereabouts and his attacker profile ands M/O.

Whether she’s listed in letters to the Governor as well I don’t know, otherwise it could perhaps be considered a sixth rape victim.

One woman he raped gave birth to a child resulting from the assault also. Huckabee’s snowflake baby was a separate case, a retarded incest victim whose court ordered procedure based on her request was blocked funding by Huckabee himself as Gov. despite a Judge’s request such be paid for.

As for his race vs. Fisher, with Mellon-Scaife and Murdoch owned media all over Arkansas, she made serious inroads in a time when Republicans were all riding the Dubya/9-11 crest of public support.

You’ll probably find a ton of pro-Dubya statements by Huckabee on Lexis for the time frame as well.

“Polling showed the race slowly narrowing, but Fisher was unable to cut into Huckabee’s lead enough to win. Huckabee was also helped by the positive political wave for Republicans that swept through nation the that year, though it did little to save incumbent U.S. Senator Tim Hutchinson, from his loss, by a 54 percent to 46 percent margin, to then Attorney General Mark Pryor. In the end Fisher performed very well, far better than the Democrats’ 1998 candidate. Fisher managed to hold the personally popular Mike Huckabee to a margin of victory of 53 percent to 47 percent, giving him a real race, which was just what the Democratic Party had hoped for. Unfortunately for Fisher, Mike Huckabee still won.”-wiki

There’s also items like Huckabee’s wife turning away registered law abiding voters of age or ethnicity at a Little Rock polling place in violation of both State and Federal law.

That’s the kind of tactics they used to garner Huckabee his wing votes. Diebold and ES&S were big items in the state vote counting process and remain so.

The Religious Initiative money also peppered this state to try and prevent him getting solidified opposition, especially with minority churches. You can find Rove directly aiding and abetting GOP Gov. races fromt the White House with public funds if you look closely enough. I’d suggest having him called to State Committees or before Legislatures when it could be done and make him challenge States Rights and try to overweigh his own base votes by citing the Commerce Clause, etc. He cannot cite Executive Privlege over State matters one would assume… those powers are reserved, not granted.

Rove sent his opposition research director to be an Attorney in Rep.D Marion Berry’s first district as well. At the time there were several possible discrepencies with voting machines to address in lower wards of his district.

A candidate had his vote for himself not show up on voting tabulations in or bordering the 1st district…

Bud Cummins also had other items of interest to address, and an online slander campaign to try and mischaractize voting registration parallels the effort of the GOP to grab votes from a solid Democratic bloc. Those complaints listed online and cited by regional papers and magazines were since scrubbed, Lexis may still show them… right wingers acted like third persons or moderates who were alarmed at Democrat registration efforts. Concern trolls, as it were…

It was a concerted effort. RICO worthy.

Speaking of Arkansas, did anybody see the AP Ron Fournier hit piece on Hillary via Good Bill Bad Bill last week. More important, did anybody save a copy. It has disappeared Google returns references to it but not he article.

It was a beautiful piece of [journalistic wet] work: it was a pseudo-critique of a speech by Bill with point-by-point absurd refutations. It was not satire, though it might have been. It was a an elegant (and cruel) travesty of the sort of journalism that people have been craving for more than ten years.

Fournier, “the audacity of hope” point man.

Pro Barack.

Looks like that’s who Rove wants to face. Look for stories about the GOP being ‘afeared’ of Barack sometime soon…

Let us return for a moment to yesteryear, and the brouhaha that ensued over Al Gore’s supposed claim that he “invented the internet.” To catch everyone up, we turn to a piece by Jane Hall in the September/October 2000 Columbia Journalism Review:

Gore has been quoted directly — in derisive comments by Republicans as well as in news stories — as claiming that he “invented” the Internet. In fact, what he said in that interview with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer was, “During my service in Congress I took the initiative in creating the Internet.” He may have been self-aggrandizing. But he didn’t say he invented the Internet — and, as several Internet experts said when the jokes came flying, Gore did play an important role while in Congress in developing the Internet.

The CNN interview Hall referred to took place in March 1999. On June 26, Ron Fournier reported, “Gore told CNN last week that he helped create the Internet.” (It is unclear what interview Fournier was referring to; Campaign Desk has been unable to find a June interview with Gore including such remarks).

If Cheney endorsed the “Wurmser” option, then probable cause exists that he committed treason, de facto if not de jure. The “Wurmser option” — at least as reported by Clemons — urged that the GOI conduct a “low yield” strike against Iran. A “low yield” strike against Iran would maximize an Iranian military response against US troops in Iraq, increasing the probability that Shia militia could sever the Baghdad to Basra supply line. The intended objective of the Wurmser option was a massive US retaliation against Iran. In other words, the Wurmser option evidences an affirmative step to place US troops at a greater risk of death for the interests of another nation.

A few months ago, I spent a little time researching the legal mechanism that allowed the war powers to flow into the VP’s office and create an imperial vice presidency. It is bit technical as it analyzes the history of executive order 12958, but it may provide a useful background, especially if one is interested in prosecuting Cheney. The Nation put it online as letter response to A. Huq’s highly recommended essay “Cheney and the Constitution”. Here’s Huq’s essay,

There are other obstacles to impeachment.

One is Hillary who won’t back any impeachment motions or ever mention it herself.

One is Neocon “Praying with the President” Nancy who has sworn to protect Darth and W from impeachment and spent several days in Congress doing exactly that when Kucinich motioned for impeachment.

Does anyone know what the payoff is for Nancy? The only explanations for her refusal to consider impeachment are that she is either culpable somehow, or she’s made a deal with Darth. Which is it?

Some folks say she also knew before the Iraq invasion that the intel was being “fixed around the policy” but went along with the plan anyway. Is there real evidence backing that assertion up?

I have always thought it would be the support that Hillary gets from the I-lobby that would sink her ship.

Didn’t think of I-lobby support as a choke chain till I read the above.

I did wonder why she had to run from NY where she would have to become their creature in order to get elected.

But Lieberman’s endorsement would be lethal. Everybody hates Lieberman.

Comment by Shirin | 2007-12-17 15:23:45

rjj, the I-lobby can make or break a congressional career, and it has done so in a number of cases.

As for Hillary, she is a politician through and through, and a very ambitious one, obviously, who will do whatever she has to do. No doubt people here are tired of hearing this one ’cause I’ve told it a number of times, but just in case you missed it the first six times: During one of her Senatorial campaigns (don’t remember which one now), some of her Jewish supporters (mainly the usual suspects) “expressed concern” over campaign contributions from Muslim supporters. Hillary not only returned the money, she delivered a public slap in the face to her Muslim supporters by making it into a P.R. event. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want a president who is going to publicly dis one group of supporters in order to keep another another. And for the record, it wouldn’t make a difference to me if the tables were turned, and it was Jewish money she returned. I don’t like what that event showed me about her character and her priorities.

TeakWoodKite:

Thank you for the reference to the Va. Law article. Highly recommended. I hope to read it in closer detail tonight when I have a little more time.

As for the question of torture, I merely mention a quote from Sun Tzu: “The captured soldiers should be kindly treated and kept. This is called, using the conquered foe to augment one’s own strength.”

Sure, the AIE and its apostles endorse torture –claiming it renders info of military value. But when it comes to the art of war, who are you going to trust…Dick Cheney or Tzu?

One would think that torture will only lead to greater blowback against the US. Maybe that is what N-Pod and the Straussians want. Maybe that is what Dersh wants.

Of course, besides being a military tactic that fails to serve US national security interests, on the legal level, systematic torture is unconstitutional. Endorsing it should lead to impeachment hearings.

There has been some good news recently. Conrad Black, ex Lord, has been banged up for six and a half years and a few hope he serves ten.

Where’s the connection with Cheney? Well none really other than Conrad was a regular visitor to Private Eye’s Hall of Fame, where it exposed the worst practices of journalists predominently associated with Great Britain. A few years ago, intellectuals like David Suzuki were raising a beacon of concern that there was a conflict of interest in “honorable” Conrad owning all the Media concerns (TV & Newspapers) of any note. And “caring” Conrad did bring a tear to the eye of the Canadian people prior to his trial. Now they are shedding tears of joy. Three cheers alround.

It seems Cheney is only welling up tears of frustration as to why he is not already in irons. Even faux news can’t quite find the words to present him as “compassionate”. Compassionate Cheney…..PAH.

As we are on faux news, oh Rupert have you visited your buddy Conrad yet? Better be quick while you can see him from the outside.

Wexler keeps upping the number of signatures he wants. It’s just ared herring to take the heat off the party. Wexler’s “plea” is a Dem party gambit to allow people like us to feel we can make a difference. We can’t. He will ignore this, as he was meant to. His congressional website makes no mention of it, at least couldn’t find on a site search there. The resolution and his promises will go nowhere, while we are led to believe the Democratic party still has some democrats with a conscience in it. REALLY, IF HE OR ANY OF THEM CAN’T ACT WITHOUT MAKING DEMANDS ON US TO SIGN YET ANOTHER PETITION, TO PROVE YET AGAIN WE EXIST, IT JUST SHOWS THEY HAVE NO INTENTION OF ACTING. The whole point of this game is to say we are the fringe — after all, 50,000 is not an overwhelming number. And indeed, if a million were to sign, there would still be some reason not to impeach. they have made it clear, and no amount of demonstrating or petitions or calls and letters will move them. The die is cast. Pelosi rules.
SO WHY SIGN IT?
TO MAKE IT CLEAR to any who still have faith in this party, to make it clear to those who think, “They CAN’T ignore so MANY of us!” that in fact, they are faithless, and their plan is precisely to ignore us while pretending not to, in hopes we will vote for them, be fooled by them again.
So, yes, make it a million signatures. And when they ignore it and trot out the usual excuses and whimper pathetically of how they can’t act unless there is some organized public effort, or any of their other preposterous babble, maybe many who signed will see the light and consign them to the trash bin of history and help build a new party — or new parties.
Make it a million, make it 2 million. Sunshine is the best disinfectant. Let power speak lies to truth, and those who seek the truth seek elsewhere.

…..Does anyone know what the payoff is for Nancy? The only explanations for her refusal to consider impeachment are that she is either culpable somehow, or she’s made a deal with Darth. Which is it?…..

I think she must be culpable. Either that or they have promised her a new, red outfit.

Comment by Andrew Yu-Jen Wang | 2008-10-04 17:20:13

Cheney attended Yale University, but he flunked out. Cheney was twice prosecuted for and convicted of drunk driving. Cheney lied to former U.S. House Majority Leader Dick Armey about the grounds for going to war in Iraq. Cheney is a pathological liar. Cheney is incompetent. Cheney would like to think that he is above the law. However, Cheney must pay for crimes against the United States and the world.

I would like improve my SQL knowledge.
I red that many SQL resources and still feel, that I am not an expert

Thanks,
