Letter to Senator Clinton
By Dr Carolyn on February 5, 2008 at 1:15 AM in 9/11, Bush/Cheney, Health Care, Hillary Clinton
Dear Senator Clinton:
I have been watching the primaries with great interest and am writing this letter in hopes that it might help your campaign. To introduce myself, I am a Canadian physician who has no voting ability when it comes to American elections. I have absolutely nothing to gain by testifying about your natural ability to lead the U.S. out of darkness.
I met you at Ground Zero on September 12th, 2001. In fact, my medical team of five Canadians literally bumped into you in our haste to make it to Stuyvesant High School where the casualties of the WTC terrorist attacks were accumulating.
When I caught my balance amidst the crowd of people, I realized that it was you standing in front of me. I will never forget that moment. You were very composed with only a single secret service agent beside you, completely camouflaged as an ordinary citizen. When my group realized who you were, we stood still. I was speechless and already overwhelmed by the chaos around us. The only words that I could manage to form were: We are Canadians. We came from Canada to help.
You shook each of our hands and thanked us. The momentum and courage that your simple gesture gave us was very much appreciated.
When I reflect on that week, a flood of memories returns to me. First, unlike any other of your political colleagues at the time, you were walking about, without any lights or cameras, reassuring the people that you represent that you were there to help. You were vulnerable, ready and willing to have anyone approach you in person _ unlike President Bush.
In fact, because the current president is so afraid of getting assassinated _ that is what the police told us on September 15th, 2001 - the medical triage had to shut down for _security reasons in preparation for his arrival on Friday, and might I add three whole days after the attacks. At the time, our triage was taking care of between 50 to 70 patients an hour. We had over 200 medical volunteers working around the clock to help. As far as we know, all of our patients were injured volunteers. We would patch up whomever we could and help them get back to the fevered search for potential life.
The stories of injured fire fighters and other rescue workers obsessed about getting stitched up, or having their eyes flushed from the acidic smoke, as quickly as possible in order to continue looking for a loved one, are too numerous to recount. However, when President Bush came to Ground Zero, the Triage was closed down and we all were forced home.
Six years later, you helped me again - though this time not in person. Somehow, I still remain ashamed that I ever got sick after helping. My lungs have never been the same as when I crossed the finish line at the Ironman Canada ultra distance triathlon on August 26, 2001.
Because of you, Senator Clinton, thousands of WTC volunteers have free medical care for their rescue-related illnesses. I was absolutely astonished when American volunteers that I still keep in touch with told me that I could also get help despite being a Canadian. To be honest, I refused any assistance for several years. For one, I am not bitter and choose not to define my life by September 11th. Even if I knew that I would get as sick as I have, I would help again. My quality of life compared to many of the great people that I met during that dark week six years ago is actually pretty awesome. I remain grateful for what I have and not bitter about what I do not.
Regardless, from the moment that I met you in person, and from the many moments I have been grateful for your continuing to stand up for the thousands who later became sick and injured from Ground Zero, I have thought of you as a true hero.
California may have the “Terminator”, America has you.
In closing, although the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan make me sick with despair, after what you saw first hand on September 11th, 2001, I don’t blame you for taking the greatest measure available at the time to keep America safe. You did the best you could, with what you had, at the time.
Senator Obama, or any of your rivals for that matter, were never at Ground Zero. How can they truly second-guess your decision?
I look forward to cheering for you all the way to the finish line - when you are sworn in officially as President of the United States.

Simply Outstanding! Thank you Dr. Carolyn for your team’s sacrifice, assistance, caring and your words.
I agree with Teak …
thank you for your compassion and service!
I, too, agree with Teak. Thank you for your eloquent and honest comment. Gee, I wish I’d said it.
[...] Larry Johnson offers a touching message in his Letter to Senator Clinton. [...]
Hi Larry,
I, like you, am hoping for a Senator Clinton win today.
You’ve been pretty tough on Senator Obama and while I can’t say it’s not justified, I didn’t enjoy it.
Anyway, I can’t help but trust my gut that it very well end up being a Clinton/Obama ticket.
Cheers to you. You’re a cool dude. And let’s hope this works out well.
Well in about an hour i will venture to the pol and cast my vote. This is the first time in my life that I don’t already know whom I will cast a ballot for.
I could flip a coin..
( a policy wonk on this blog just had a fainting spell while reading the line above.)
I don’t know who the policy wonk here is, but my silly little head just exploded!
Guess what? I thought i read that Indiana is part of super Tuesday..But it’s not. We vote May 6th.
Everything will probably be decided by then.
Just you in line?
That’s so cute. Poor HH. Wonders why the parking lot is empty. Then there’re no tables with blue-haired ladies! Huh ….
No, I’ll be just in front of him, or behind him, or in another polling location, pulling the lever for Hillary, but it does suck that our votes will count for very little, if at all.
The only thing in the electoral process more ridiculous than the drawn out primaries is the Electoral College. The combination of these have completely removed the election of possibly the most powerful person in the world from the hands of the people and delivered it to the annointed elite. This is not what democracy was supposed to be.
Can’t we get this letter out for the country to see? I was so moved.
Main stream media would rather lose a ratings point than say anything positive about Hillary Clinton and the so-called liberal blogophere has for the most part joined the Obama parade. Most people don’t want to know about the kind of things said in this letter. It would interfere in their Hillary Hatred and their poor little heads would pop.
Thanks for helping us in that time, the way emergency planning was neglected for that day(no safety suits no HAZMAT precautions, etc.) was profoundly inadequate and entirely indicative of the leadership there and in DC.
As for the regulars who read here, the blog’s core topics:
“American officials in Chad, including the U.S. ambassador, abandoned the U.S. Embassy and fled to the airport for safety.”
i remember watching the clean up on tv and thinking … who the hell are they kidding … it cant be safe working and breathing on that pile of rubble. of course, the bush adminstration were quick to minimize and lie about the danger … to this day, christie todd whittman has yet to come clean about who ordered her to lie.
“American officials in Chad, including the U.S. ambassador, abandoned the U.S. Embassy and fled to the airport for safety.” once again, incidents like this put joe wilson’s actions in iraq in sharp perspective.
And I hope you look forward to this kind of White House:

Soon after the Orwellian Clinton administration lost the Democratic majority all on their own.
I pressed the lever this morning for a honest politician - and it wasn’t a Clinton.
I voted for Clinton this morning, and it was, to me, a historic occasion, voting for a candidate who might be the first female President of the Untied States.
One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.
No matter what happens, it felt right, justice.
BTW, it’s very very difficult to understand how we’re being manipulated, sometimes. The more we think we know something, the less we actually do. When we hurl emotional epithets, infused with rage, someone is pulling our chain, we accuse others of what we’re guilty of ourselves, or we do to others what others are doing to us, not understanding.
So you revealed your decision making process, which is very emotionally chaotic, at the mercy of others.
“Untied States”
Q: What is Obama’s electoral strategy?
Aye, United, of course….
My absentee ballot from Texas arrived this morning and it has already been marked for Hillary and put in the mail (Texas primary March 4). This ballot arrived just in time too because I was getting ready to vote on-line for Hillary as a member of Democrats Abroad in the Global Primary — but of course you arn’t allowed to vote in two primaries and I thought it best to stick with my own state. The Global primary for Americans abroad is brand new this year. I hope it doesn’t cause any confusion for people who might not know what to do and therefore don’t get to vote or have their votes annulled.
Another comment. I remember seeing some info (in this forum, I believe) about voter registration in Texas. The poster indicated that in Texas everybody is registered as an Independent and can vote for either party. Well, this turns out not to be true. The ballot I received this morning is clearly marked with, “I AM A DEMOCRAT AND I CANNOT VOTE IN ANY OTHER PARTY’S PRIMARY”.
Why was it Orwellian, can you explain your reasoning?
markom ….
surely you jest … or does irony mean very little to you?
posting david brooks remarks about mandates and health care … an endorsement of barack’s plan … ignores the fact, that this is the same person who was a major cheerleader for the invasion of iraq. he has strongly defended the continued occupation as well. lets not also forget … he is a U of Chicago graduate … the birthplace of the neoconic movement.
just a thought hear … do you think he might have a sinster reason for supporting a health plan without mandates …. do you think … huh … do you?
I really think the way we vote in the primaries stinks. I could be in Russia for all the choice I will have by the time VA gets to vote.
Just heard all the West Virginia delegates went to Huckabee, including Dolly Parton’s vote!
