UPDATED: In Memoriam for Dallas Motorcycle Officer (+ Open Thread)

UPDATE: 2/22/2008 — Statement from Hillary Rodham Clinton. Senator Clinton gave the following statement earlier this morning at approximately 10:30 a.m. CST.

“I just learned of the death of a Dallas police officer in a devastating accident that occurred as these motorcycle officers were leading our cars to this site. We are just heartsick over this loss of life and I have asked that my condolences be conveyed to the family. I will call them as soon as it is appropriate to do so. I have placed a call to the Chief of Police expressing my sympathy. This reminds us, once again, what our men and women in law enforcement do every single day and it is important that we respect and appreciate their service. I certainly am grateful for all they do for me and more importantly what they do for citizens in cities like Dallas and others across our country.”

“I just want to express my deepest condolences to the family and to the Dallas police department on this tragic, tragic loss.”

Breaking on MSNBC … Hillary Clinton briefly addressed a group gathered at a Ft. Worth rally, and said:

“Thank you all for being here and God bless you, but we cannot have a rally … it would not be appropriate.” [Verbatim -- I typed what Contessa Brewer quoted her saying to the crowd -- backed up my DVR to type it.]

She is heading to Dallas to be with the family at [Methodist] hospital [in Dallas], Brewer said. And Brewer reports that Hillary has already talked with the Dallas chief of police.

MSNBC just showed very upsetting images of the accident aftermath — the officer’s helmet on the ground, and the badly battered motorcycle. (This happened this morning in her motorcade in Dallas … I haven’t looked up a news story, and if any of you want to add those below, please do.)

It’s very, very sad. Our sincerest sympathies go to that Dallas motorcycle officer’s family. God, he was probably working overtime to make extra money for his family, like police officers so often have to do.

Earlier, I noticed that Mr. Murder is posting some important news, and wish to also give him and others a chance to discuss other topics. I’m not going to post any other topics here at the moment.
