Hope & Change Wide Open Thread!

Hillary Clinton, Tavis Smiley has promised, is speaking at around 5:00-5:30 p.m. ET on C-Span. She will speak briefly and then take Q&A. In the meantime, enjoy this and DIGG IT:

The Turks are bragging that they’ve killed as many as 799 PKK in Northern Iraq. (Turkey is part of N.A.T.O., of which Sen. Barack Obama is in charge as chairman of the European Affairs subcommittee of the U.S. Senate’s Foreign Relations committee. I’m sure Obama is on top of this NATO member’s actions. Oh wait. Obama hasn’t convened a single hearing of that subcommittee, or visited any of the European countries.)

Yesterday the London Times reported central questions about Senator Obama’s shocking dearth of international experience: “Fresh doubts over Barack Obama’s foreign policy credentials were expressed on both sides of the Atlantic last night, after it emerged that he had made only one brief official visit to London - and none elsewhere in Western Europe or Latin America.” It also reported: “Mr. Obama had failed to convene a single policy meeting of the Senate European subcommittee, of which he is chairman.”

Rick Moran has a devilishly fun read: “NOT A CULT, A CRUSADE.” Enjoy.

Susan,

Thank you for posting about the Turks. Are the Turks being allowed to do this because of what Sibel Edmonds is exposing? If so, nobody will open their mouths. Not Obama. Not anyone.

I also saw a brief bit of news about Kerry, Biden and Hagel on their way to Turkey. Do you know more on this and the purpose of the trip?

Kurds threaten violence against Turkish cities

By Colin Freeman and Nicholas Birch in Istanbul
Last Updated: 7:23pm GMT 23/02/2008

Kurdish separatists today threatened a new campaign of violence against Turkish cities as the country’s army pressed on with its latest offensive against guerrilla positions in northern Iraq.

The rebel group is believed to have numerous “sleepers” within Kurdish communities in cities like Istanbul and Ankara, who are primed to carry out bomb attacks on military and government targets.

And then, the funniest scenario of all is the one in which “50,000 Turkish troops cross into Iraq, establishing several checkpoints along the Iraqi side of the border and engaging in minor skirmishes with PKK fighters.”

More importantly, both the American neocons and the Paşas are trying to figure a way to invade South Kurdistan.

Listening to Republican Micheal Steele talk at Black State of the Union. He’s excellent. He’s disarming, authentic, honest, engaging. And he has military experience.

He begins with “let’s get this out of the way, I’m a Republican.” Talks about his grandparents being sold into slavery.

If he’s McCain’s veep - look out.

Comment by AF | 2008-02-23 15:56:55

Also fascinating about Michael Steele is he’s not AVOIDING talking about race. He’s just talking it about it but it doesn’t run him the way it runs Barack.

That author on Shelby Steele who wrote A Bound Man said Obama doesn’t talk about race but you can see in his book he obsesses over it.

Look - you can’t blame a guy like Obama for obsessing about race. But he’s hiding this obsession, and when you hide something people sense it. And they wonder what else you’re hiding about yourself.

Comment by John | 2008-02-23 17:17:14

Steele’s never been elected to even a statewide office; in 2002 he ran for Lt. Governor but in Maryland the Gov and Lt. Gov run as a ticket. In 2006 he ran for the Senate and couldn’t carry the black vote against Ben Cardin, even after a last-minute attempt to swing them his way through fraud (busing in homeless people from Philadelphia to distribute leaflets listing him as one of the candidates endorsed by Kweisi Mfume, which he most certainly was NOT.)

It’s hard to see him being described as ready to assume the office of President on Day One. Of course, I feel the same way about Obama, but Steele is even LESS qualified.

The reality of the Afghanistan situation is the Taliban influence 75% of the countryside especially where the Poppy’s are grown.

NATO has troops that fight with caveats. That is the politically correct way of saying they will not go into dangerous area’s because their populations will not tollerate a lot of deaths. Gates says Afghanistan is ok, but why is he sending in 3,200 more marines. Canada is threatening to leave if more NATO forces are not provided with out caveats. Pakisan is going unstable. I wish the media would ask Barack his understanding of NATO since he has not held any subcommittee meetings. The media is giving this guy a pass that is toing to result in a mess if he gets nominated

Hopefully Hillary will get the nomination and this fiasco can be averted. Barack is another George Bush who does not have the experience to do the job.

Comment by Simon | 2008-02-23 16:08:50

I wish the media would ask Barack his understanding of NATO since he has not held any subcommittee meetings

So, what is Obama’s position, what is his responsibilty, here, or is he too busy campaigning?

Comment by fiscalliberal | 2008-02-23 17:29:18

If he is busy campaigning, he should relinquish the Subcommittee Chairmanship so that the oversignt needed by the Senate is accomplished.

As a candidate he should have a knowledgeable position to confirm he is knowledgeable of the subject on Day 1

Comment by SusanUnPC | 2008-02-23 18:01:47

Simon, you don’t need me to tell you this; He was chair of that subcommittee since TWO THOUSAND AND FIVE. He hasn’t been campaigning 100% of that time.

Here’s what I don’t get: If I were running for president, I’d hold a hearing or two — on a carefully selected subject, with the right experts — just to get myself some air time and some press. Well, maybe he doesn’t need or care about that kind of press.

Look at the time I’m posting this — Hillary Clinton is about to come up . but I have quite thoroughly enjoyed, so very much, what I’ve heard of this conference, and I have liked how Smiley has controlled the FLOW, the TIME, and the CHANCE for all (with very diverse views) of his participants.

I fell asleep for a little bit just after Sheila jackson Lee finished speaking … and I dreamed about her, and her big-eyed, solemn, old soul little grandchild who lived in Mrs. Lee’s very beautiful and elegant home where I was a guest. it was a beautiful dream.

Comment by Marjorie | 2008-02-24 11:15:32

Smiley did a nice job. His interview with Hillary appeared to me to be a “Thank you for being here when Obama isn’t.” He said to Hillary that he had three questions-as though handing over the ammo for her cannon. And they were the perfect three:
1. Did Bill Clinton make a racist remark on tv?
She explained no racist remark, but went on about 1 - 2 minutes.
2. What is the role of the Super Delegates? She explained how they fit into the election and that it a part of the system. She said, [approximately] For example, Senator Ted Kennedy is a Super Delegate and he is supporting Barak Obama. Now I won Mass., but Senator Kennedy believes Obama to be the candidate that is needed. . . . She went on to say the important thing is to support the winning candidate, whomever that might be, to keep the Republicans out of the W.H.
3. How does your [HRC] health care plan differ from Obama’s? She went into some detail, and said under Obama’s plan people w/o insurance would end up in the emergency room, and ultimately cost the taxpayers more than her insurance plan. [btw-Michelle O. is/was a hospital administrator whose job is/was to find a hospital to take patients w/o insurance, according to one report-this is my own recollection]

It was an opportunity for Hillary that appeared to work very much to her advantage. I am interested read what others of you have to say if you saw the program.

story: gov. siegelman (d-alabama) got railroaded into prison by kkkarl rove’s dpt. of injustice dpt. this is really fugly. (i’m wondering if amnesty int’l has declared this guy a pol. prisoner yet.)

also, larisa alexandrovna, to whom larry provides a link on the right side of nq, is a journalist. she investigated. she’s now an advocate for the gov. she is now being “swiftboated” by the dark side. (i really like her work.)

ditto for scott horton of harpers mag. one of the great journalists out there.

Scott Horton of Harper’s is the first victim…
I posted earlier today that Scott Horton of Harper’s and myself, as well as others are being targeted by the corrupt politicians of Alabama and their paid shills in the Alabama press. I had gotten word from three different people that we were going to be swift-boated.

I had suspected the attacks to be organized one at a time and spread out over several weeks. Apparently, my theory of how this would be done is turning out to be correct. What I did not expect was how soon they would start their attacks.

Hey here’s what Hillary said in Ohio today that I think is BRILLIANT:

(Evil genius Karl Rove said to attack political opponents on their strengths.)

“People talk a lot about change. We have lived through some of the
worst change that anyone could imagine the last seven years,”
she said to loud applause.

“People thought we were getting a compassionate conservative, didn’t they? It turned out he was neither. We have lived with the consequences of those mistakes.”

Comment by yttik | 2008-02-23 20:54:59

“… an untested George W. Bush called for change–just as Obama is now–and “the American people got shafted.”

I thought this was amazing. That’s exactly how I’ve felt about the whole Obama campaign, this like a re-run. We just elected a messiah who was going to “restore honor and integrity to the white house.”

Be careful looking for a knight in shining armor. Too often you just find yourself cleaning up after his horse.

Comment by Marjorie | 2008-02-24 11:27:30

“Vote for me, the Man Who Wasn’t There.”

“Smiley tells Washington Post he’s gotten angry e-mails, threats for criticizing Obama”

Well, here’s more of that cult behavior Obama giggled at the other night as outlandish. Threatening Tavis Smiley is part of the great “Change” that Obama is seeking.

Shame on him for not going to New Orleans and addressing this great event. I’ve watched this even for the last 5 years and it is a great meeting of minds. But Obama’s greatest strength isn’t the facts and reality on the ground. Its his creating lofty ideals and Hope.

What a sad example he set for George Bush, er I mean, what a sad situation that he acted like Bush here, all talk when it comes to the community, but no presense.

There is a birthday party here tonight..( yea one of my precious children)
OK I’m hoping that because i’m not very political you guys will give me a break..
My observations…( remember, It’s the hoopster here)
point #1. If an empty suit with no policy history and has lots of baggage can beat HRC accross the board with pretty speaches..
Then it’s like the pat’s vs. KC during the football season..lopsided wins against an weak person…
I like hillary..she has made alot of mistakes…
You think if you spent millions on experts you would know that you don’t front load your process for nomination in the first couple of months. Athletes know it’s the 4th quarter that wins n embarrassment the game. A good start and then a great finish wins the game. Bill clinton really hurt Hillary..He has turned into embarressment..Nobody wants him back playing politics..at least around here..
And what about mr. O? just a refesher course..If your wife ( First lady) say’s that that she has never been proud to be an american till just now..
You are toast in the general election..
That has got to be the most retarted stupidist thing anyone has ever said ..EVER! You just made sure the dems will not win this year because no one and i mean NO ONE will trust anyone that doesn’t love america. idiot!!
McCain will destroy obama easily..jesus folks..I could destroy oboma if his old lady doesn’t love america..( well now she does) dumbasses..
The GOP will win again because we have given over the love of our country for purely political talking points..and we didn’t even get swift boated this time.
I think i need to run..cause this is the most stupid, retarded run for prez i have ever seen..
And if you think 92 thousand dollars for sandwich plates will get you elected in a caucaus ..you got another thing coming..
Idea’s win the day..not pretty words..leadership wins..not speaches..
Forgive me my friends..there are at least 100 people here and i drank too much..
We are doing an edwards thing next month..
A 6,000 sqaure foot house with hot tub and full size swimming pool..whoops there is not 2 america’s..it’s one america that people can aspire too..been there done that..dumbass..I’ll hate myself in the morning for posting this.. but I’m going to talk to about a hundred people in 15 minutes in indiana and trust me..that is what it is…

Check out Taegan Goddard’s Political Wire (polticalwire.com) — he posts a “poll” showing Obama up by 14 points in Texas, and doesnt’ tell us its an ONLINE POLL. I criticized him for including it, and two hours later, my comment had been scrubbed. I didn’t use profanity, I wasn’t especially rude, but I questioned the poll so I am gone.

Goddard also bleats Robert Novak talking points involving the Clinton campaign, often with bizarre, contradictory results: today he tells us that Hillary is on the verge of withdrawing, but in the very next story he tells us she is still trying to get Bill Richardson’s endorsement. How can both stories be true? Never mind…

Finally, the site is totally infested with Obamatons who, when they get frustrated with their inability to answer your questions, withdraw to the level of “Oh yeah? Well Hillary voted to get Americans killed in Iraq- and Barack is winning! So suck it!” (This will NOT get you banned from the site. Criticizing the site host, even moderately, and supporting Hillary however will.)

Here’s what one of “your” ppl said about “your” girl last week.

The truth is an amazing thing or are you going to trash this woman like you do everyone else, who doesnt agree with you?

Pay particular attention to the last remark.

Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, a supporter of Sen. Hillary Clinton, spoke at St. Mary’s college in Maryland last week and offered a very frank assessment of the state of the Clinton campaign.

“Townsend said she expects Sen. Barack Obama to win the Democratic presidential nomination and that Clinton is finished. She believed that the Wisconsin results demonstrated that Clinton’s coalition (voters over the age of 50 and those earning less than $50,000) had fallen apart.

When asked why the Clinton campaign had failed, Ms. Townsend had plenty of opinions and she placed significant blame on Bill Clinton and his racially tinged statements in South Carolina.

She also felt that Clinton made a tactical error in making “experience and inevitability” her central campaign themes.

Townsend argued that Clinton had little more experience than Obama and far less than candidates such as Senators Dodd and Biden.

I give Hillary credit for apologizing yesterday.

“If anyone was offended by anything that was said, whether it was meant or not, or misinterpreted or not, then obviously, I regret that,” Clinton said in a question and answer session at the annual “State of the Black Union” symposium held in New Orleans.

I am disgusted by Obama’s comments towards the Declared candidate Ralph Nader and find it reflective of Senator Obamas own campaign.

““My sense is that Mr. Nader is somebody who if you don’t listen and adopt all of his policies thinks you’re not substantive,”

Abraham Lincoln Speeches
At Peoria, Illinois (October 16, 1854)

The repeal of the Missouri Compromise, and the propriety of its restoration, constitute the subject of what I am about to say.

As I desire to present my own connected view of this subject, my remarks will not be, specifically, an answer to Judge Douglas; yet, as I proceed, the main points he has presented will arise, and will receive such respectful attention as I may be able to give them.

I wish further to say, that I do not propose to question the patriotism, or to assail the motives of any man, or class of men; but rather to strictly confine myself to the naked merits of the question.

I also wish to be no less than National in all the positions I may take; and whenever I take ground which others have thought, or may think, narrow, sectional and dangerous to the Union, I hope to give a reason, which will appear sufficient, at least to some, why I think differently…..
