Obama Present on Continued Use of Blackwater

Originally posted at DailyKos and at MyDD.com   ::   My e-mail address is HillarysBloggers@yahoo.com   ::   I’m married with children — pro-choice, tree-huggin, Million Mom Marchin’, yellow-dog-Democrat.

An article in the current issue of The Nation discusses comments from a senior foreign policy advisor to Sen. Obama, in which they make clear BO’s refusal to rule out continued use of private security forces such as Blackwater.

I think we all know that “private security forces” actually means mercenaries – hired guns – private armies - folks who do the exact same job as our troops, get paid a shitload more money and operate outside the laws of Iraq and those here at home.

In other words – they can literally get away with murder (and they have) and BO is keeping open his options when it comes to using them on the ground in Iraq.  Maybe that’s why he says he’ll bring our combat troops home but he refuses to declare he will end the occupation entirely.

Make the jump – you know you want to…

A senior foreign policy adviser to leading Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama has told The Nation that if elected Obama will not “rule out” using private security companies like Blackwater Worldwide in Iraq. The adviser also said that Obama does not plan to sign on to legislation that seeks to ban the use of these forces in US war zones by January 2009, when a new President will be sworn in.

Obama’s broader Iraq withdrawal plan provides for some US troops to remain in Iraq - how many his advisors won’t say.  But it’s clear that Obama’s “Follow-on force” will include a robust security force to protect US personnel in Iraq…

Contrast this with something Hillary’s Senate office put out earlier today…

Senator Clinton Cosponsors Legislation to Ban Use of Private Security Contractors in Iraq and Afghanistan

Washington, DC – Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton announced today that she has cosponsored legislation to ban the use of Blackwater and other private mercenary firms in Iraq.

“From this war’s very beginning, this administration has permitted thousands of heavily-armed military contractors to march through Iraq without any law or court to rein them in or hold them accountable.  These private security contractors have been reckless and have compromised our mission in Iraq.  The time to show these contractors the door is long past due.  We need to stop filling the coffers of contractors in Iraq, and make sure that armed personnel in Iraq are fully accountable to the U.S. government and follow the chain of command,” said Senator Clinton.

The legislation requires that all personnel at any U.S. diplomatic or consular mission in Iraq be provided security services only by Federal Government Personnel.  It also includes a whistleblower clause to protect contract personnel who uncover contract violations, criminal actions, or human rights abuses.

Now imagine if the names on the above bits of info were reversed.

Imagine it had been Hillary who’d said she wouldn’t rule out the use of Blackwater and other private armies in Iraq, while Obama had co-sponsored a bill to make sure these bastids are sent packing.

Just imagine the OUTRAGE that would’ve been posted on sites like this and in every other corner of he blogosphere.

I think we’d see exploding heads everywhere we looked.  The press and the media would be all over the story and would splash it on every front page at the newsstands - lead every news report for a week and yes… CNN would become the all Hillary / Blackwater network - all - the - time.  Yet because it’s BO stating he’d likely continue to use those mercenaries…

Crickets

Jane Hamsher over at Firedog Lake makes an excellent point along these lines.  She says she noticed that the hate directed at Hillary just does not transfer over to our realy enemy – John McCain.  Check it out…

Oh hang on – wait – first look at this little video…

Ok now to her point in Where Oh Where Are the McCain Haters?

Those who were the most vociferous about accusing her of racism, of running a “Southern Strategy,” of gaming the system, of conducting a scurrilous smear-driven campaign, who would argue until the death that she must be defeated lest she continue the war forever, just do not get that worked up about John McCain appearing on stage with religious wack-job racists or threatening to bomb Iran and stay in Iraq for 100 years. Every word uttered by the Clinton campaign would propel a hundred outraged “did you see this?” emails into my inbox. John McCain? Not so much.

I’m not sure I could add much to her excellent points.  With all the hate and venom on our left-leaning blogs, we rarely ever hear any mention of John McCain – a man who’s said he’ll keep our troops in Iraq for 100 years.  Yet we see post after post after post attacking Hillary – a Democrat who’s vowed to start bringing our troops home within 60 days of her inauguration.

At any rate, go read Hamsher’s article.  Its short but chock full of great points as usual.

And finally as an aside, Hillary’s campaign just announced they’ve raised over $35 million this month – their best month in the history of this campaign – with over 200,000 new donors kicking in what they could.

I checked out the campaign’s blog and found a post by Hillary’s Internet Director – Peter Daou, where he posted some notes that came in from people as they donated.  The first one really hit a nerve with me – take a look and then I’ll say why…

Hey everyone, I am a poor grad student, but I just donated $15.44 to Hillary’s campaign. If I can do it, almost everybody can. I’ll just eat ramen noodles for dinner tonight!!! Please people, match my donation of $15.44!! Will anyone take me up on my offer??? MADAM PRESIDENT, NEVER LOSE FAITH! WE ARE BEHIND YOU! PEACE TO EVERYONE!!!

Neema from New York, NY

Now when I first moved to DC after college some 23 plus years ago, I worked on the Hill for a House Subcommittee and made the paltry sum of just $12,000 a year (that’s what a college education got you in 1984).  I practically lived off Ramen Noodles so I can really relate to Neema – and I’ll be donating another $50.00 in her honor for making what I know is a serious sacrifice for the cause.

I’d love it if you’d join us by donating whatever you can to help Hillary in her historic run for the White House, to reward this woman who’s stood up for what’s right for over 35 years, and will send Blackwater packing once she’s in the Oval Office.

DONATE NOW!

I’m curious how Mark Penn is reacting to this. Doesn’t he represent Blackwater?

Interesting. I give Clinton credit for standing up to those slimeballs but I just have to wonder what Penn has up his sleeve.

Comment by JoanH | 2008-02-29 17:16:32

I think what you couldn’t resist is a snotty reminder that Penn supposedly has some connection to blackwater. In anycase you are incredibly naive if you think that all campaigns don’t have people that consult with those who we do not like much.
What matters is actions. Hillary’s actions speak for themselves.

Comment by Simon | 2008-02-29 18:15:05

Before I researched Obama, I supported Edwards and took against Clinton because of Penn.

Then I found out about Obama’s ties to Auchi, and Penn suddenly seemed rather insignificant.

Auchi makes Penn look as pure as the Virgin Mary.

Blackwater relationship with InfraGard?
(paramilatary) (Pinkertons)

One business owner in the United States tells me that InfraGard members are being advised on how to prepare for a martial law situation — and what their role might be. He showed me his InfraGard card, with his name and e-mail address on the front, along with the InfraGard logo and its slogan, “Partnership for Protection.” On the back of the card were the emergency numbers that Schneck mentioned.

I will meet you here.

Hillary cares about our veterans and won’t run mercenary wars. Plus, there’s a relationship between Rezko and Iraq and Blackwater and the whole BO thing stinks.

Vote Hillary.

Hillary cares about our veterans

And she does, this isn’t just PR fluff for the press.

I wonder which PR company Obama employs, and who they’re connected to?

Which company sold the Iraqi war to the public, did the PR for the Bush White House?

Wow - I stepped away for a little while (real life has a way of cropping up for some of us) and came back to see some of the comments left here.
I’ve gotta say I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many people making excuses or trying to change the subject regarding Blackwater of all things.
Especially on this site.
Seriously - would you be acting like this if it’d been Hillary saying she couldn’t rule out using Blackwater going foward?
Food for thought.

They know that their established power will continue under an Obama administration. They know that the Clinton’s value competence in people

Look at FEMA during Bill Clinton’s administration
Look at the tight leash Bill Clinton kept FBI Director Freeh and CIA Director Tenant on. (Sports metaphors like “It’s a slamdunk Mr. President” would not have gone over well in Bill’s Oval Office.)

He and Senator Clinton have highly developed bullshit detectors. They know how the game is played but they also do the heavy lifting required of truly capable/competent people in positions of authority. These incompetent posers (of which Senator Rockefeller is one) want to maintain the status quo. They really are afraid of a Hillary Clinton Administration because is as capable as Bill and even more of an FDR style Democrat. They want to make it all go away so they are backing the empty slate!!

War, and international diplomacy would not have been treated as a football game, either.

After Rockefeller voted to give immunity to the telecoms, it was apparent to me he voted according to PAC, PAC before Constitution.

So I would look at his money tree, see how much he got.

Have you seen Obama’s Ad responding to Clinton’s “Children ” Ad: The begining is a copy of Clinton’s images and the rest are lies. He cannot even produce his own ad and continues to plagierize.

http://blogs.suntimes.com/sweet/2008/02/sweet_obamas_ad_rebuts_clinton.html

I wish Clinton would do an ad like those you posted from YouTube nailing him for failing to fulfill his duty as charman of the FR csubcommitttee on Europe. That is a dereliction of duty to the American people. Lead with NATO, etc. She MUST expose him publicaly with this and raise the question of how can this mean “Judgment” or “Leadership” ?

She has to ask : how can you trust him with the presidency when he failed you in the US Senate with the single most imporant ting he was ever entrusted with as a US Senator?.

I want a TV Ad !!

Comment by Andy | 2008-02-29 18:51:39

Agree!! she must not withdraw: things are still developing and sooner or later the MSM is not going to be able to keep the lid on anymore on all of this.

Comment by Simon | 2008-02-29 19:07:17

Agree!! she must not withdraw

She brought in a lot of money last month, she’d be a fool to withdraw, and the democrats, though apparently simple minded, would be a fool to let her withdraw.

But remember this is the Pelosi-Reid group, totally impotent, rolling over for Bush and Cheney at every turn. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a group with less active brain cell activity. If they can’t stand up to Cheney and Bush, if after all of this they don’t understand how the republicans are gaming them, HUMILIATING THEM, they’re morons. No wonder Rockefeller endorsed Obama.

Come to think of it, you’re right, Susan, about Rockefeller, et al: it IS better Clinton not have their support.

Can you imagine those clowns in the White House, the same congress that betrayed the American people on Iraq, and FISA?

The plot thickens, doesn’t it?

I wonder if I’m being cynical?

Both of these stories were filed on Friday.

When Uncle Sugar wants to bury something the announcement always comes on a Friday. That way most self-absorbed Americans, after running Buffy & Kimberly over to soccer & ballet, will have it out of their minds by the time the news fires up again on Monday.

I wonder if I’m being cynical?

Both of these stories were filed on Friday.

To you, not to people like me, and others, this is the day to get the prime information.

You know, I wouldn’t depend on people like Kos, say, to run my war, can’t do it, not smart enough.

I also don’t expect the public to go after men like Auchi.

I do expect the more intelligent people will stay on top of it, and despite the myriad attempts made here to troll, and distract, it’s well, some pretty moldy cheese offered up, isn’t it?

And this goes back to the whole culture of narcissism, and the inability of that group to succeed, to compete.

If the trolls can’t troll this website, how the hell do they succeed, really succeed, internationally?

They don’t.

They lose.

The war isn’t with the public.

It’s very easy to fool a troll, as they reveal their lack of ability to think, and reason, with every post. The republicans may be able to beat the deocrats, but it’s Pelosi, not JFK.

These are not smart men, or women.

The Obama stories, I believe, but the trial starts Monday, so it’s kinda like the Oscars, trial watchers have a Rezko weekend to look forward to, as does Chicago.

Perhaps people did not read the fine print. I was talking about both the Reszko story and the “For The Record” on CBS.

Behind the wheel a half hour ago I realized that CBS could air the next “For The Record” on Monday and that it would cover Clinton just in time for the primaries. Hey, fair & balanced, right? Clinton fresh in their minds and Obama muddled with Buffy’s Saturday soccer score.

It is possible that I am cynical (no shit, Sherlock) but I know that in some cubical at Time-Warner, Exxon-Mobile or GE some MBA has each of your lives planned out on a nice flow chart.

Rezko, Blackwater etc. are all reasons Hillary MUST stay in the race through to the convention, regardless of the primary results. Because the mask is starting to slip, and Denver is still half a year away.

Superdelegates who endorse Obama today may endorse Hillary tomorrow. Unless she’s formally withdrawn. That, she must NOT do. Obama can not get a majority without the Superdelegates, so he can’t sew up the nomination before the convention. There will be more crap coming out about our friend Saint Barack as winter becomes spring and spring becomes summer. Stick around, Hillary. You aren’t done yet.

Comment by Gloria | 2008-02-29 18:58:52

I have to wonder if all those “Hillary-haters” from the Obama side are actually some of the Republicans who crossed over because they loved Obama oh-so-much!! Are they gaming the system even outside the caucuses? If they spew enough Hillary hatred and we wind up with Obama, who will they be voting for???

Maybe you guys need something fresh.

Do you know how far Obama has to dumb ‘em down, to even begin to get their attention?

And then people wonder why Obama/Bush people can’t DO anything…

Comment by blt | 2008-03-01 00:44:29

Another way of looking at it would be that Obama is being honest. Our military was slimmed down with the understanding that private contractors would fill the gaps. Under current conditions, with the strain as great as it has been and with no change in sight, where do we find another 20-30,000 troops to fill those security roles currently filled by contractors? By extending tours to 18-20 months, maybe?

Talk is cheap. So is co-sponsoring election year miracles.

The contractors aren’t going anywhere. Basic accountability would eliminate most of the problems.
