Imagine if Wright Were Hillary’s Pastor …

Imagine for a moment Hillary had for two decades embraced a minister and a church that preached racism or hatred for America as Wright has done. Imagine that she had embraced a minister who claims that America “started the AIDS virus . . . We are only able to maintain our level of living by making sure that Third World people live in grinding poverty.”

Imagine that Hillary had Rev. Jeremiah Wright on her “African American Religious Leadership Committee,” as did Obama as of December 4, 2007.

Hillary Clinton not only would not be running for president, she wouldn’t be in the Senate, she probably would not be employable in public life anywhere. The question is after how many such speeches was Mr. Obama’s response to draw the man closer, to elevate him higher?

What if Hillary’s response to Ferraro’s outburst (which was not in the slightest bit racist) was to say, “Aw, shucks, don’t mind her, she’s like a batty old aunt who sometimes says things she shouldn’t?”

Do you think CNN’s Anderson Cooper, as he did last night about Obama’s pastor, would have asked, “I mean, does it matter?”

Or that Gloria Borger would have replied, “I think, honestly, it depends on how much the Clinton [Obama] campaign decides to make of this …”?

Or that Ms. Borger would have offered Clinton this reassurance? “If he feels the need to distance himself even more, I bet he will.” Ahhhh.

No. Jack Cafferty, Wolf Blitzer, Keith Olbermann, Chris Matthews et al. would be hammering the $22,500 donation to Jeremiah Wright’s racist church — more than twice what the Obamas gave to any other charitable group — at the TOP of their newscasts. That is if this were Clinton’s tax form:

Obama’s 2006 Tax Form. It is shown on page 21 of 23 of the pdf file. The amount is $22,500 to Trinity United Church of Christ.

Hillary Clinton knows this. She knows how the media will fixate on the most trivial or the most meaningful parts of her tax returns. She has complied fully, and yearly, with the Senate Ethics Committee’s requirements for financial disclosure, but she has to have trepidation about releasing all to the media in the midst of a highly contested race because she knows what the media will do.

The media are couching all criticisms of Obama’s 20-year association with Rev. Jeremiah Wright, who married him and Michelle and baptized both of their daughters with remarks like Ms. Borger’s — “If he feels the need to distance himself even more, I bet he will.”

The media are not reporting, clearly, that the Obamas give Wright’s church more than they give to any other charitable group.

The media are not — in light of the anti-American views of his minister — re-scrutinizing the infamous photograph of Obama standing next to Bill Richardson — with Obama’s hands at his side, while Richardson’s right hand is over his heart during the playing of the national anthem.

The media are ignoring the now-obvious (to anyone with common sense) ties between Michelle’s negative statements about America and the views held by her pastor, who she’s listened to for decades.

[She won't even commit to supporting the Democratic nominee if it's not her Barack? Astonishing. IMAGINE IF BILL OR CHELSEA CLINTON HAD SAID THIS.]

[The Seattle Times op-ed adds: "And Michelle Obama didn't help with her comment about finally, in her 40s, "being proud of my country for the first time," and suggesting to a young audience in a working-class Ohio town that they should sidestep "corporate America" and instead seek out more rewarding, lower-paying jobs in teaching and social work. Whom did she think she was talking to, the senior class at Vassar?"]

I’ll stick my neck out and ask this:

Do we want a president and First Lady who have been inculcated for 20+ years with the racist propaganda that America is AmeriKKKa, that America had it coming on 9/11, that AIDS was given to black people by white people, and that rich white men run America and therefore America deserves nothing but their contempt and incendiary hatred?

Do we?

UDPATE: See this diary at MyDD.com: “WSJ: Obama and the Minister.” The diarist QUOTES the Wall Street Journal here:

His voice rising, Mr. Wright said, “We supported Zionism shamelessly while ignoring the Palestinians and branding anybody who spoke out against it as being anti-Semitic. . . . We care nothing about human life if the end justifies the means. . . .”

Concluding, Mr. Wright said: “We started the AIDS virus . . . We are only able to maintain our level of living by making sure that Third World people live in grinding poverty. . . .”

I “hope” the media does go after this and a good sign was Morning Joe on MSNBO. They fairly well hammered Obama on this, except Chuck Todd who seems to now treat Obama as the saviour.

I would also hope the Clinton campaign keeps their mouths shut. Let this play by itself.

Comment by Fleaflicker | 2008-03-14 11:24:56

Hillary did the right thing by doing all that apologizing. Now she needs to zip it up and see what happens. I haven’t seen Obama speak about these latest revelations. No excuses and no apologies. It sounds like he is supporting Wright.

I saw Todd this morning and was wondering what planet he is living on. Wright is Obama’s pastor, mentor, and spiritual and campaign advisor. Come on, people. CNN and MSNBC are slow on the uptake of the story and are framing a victim mentality narrative IMHO. They are not showing the “GD America” portion of Wright’s sermon, the Jesus/Obama portion, or the “doing it dirty” comment either. Fox is running this every hour on the hour (no big surprise). Team Clinton isn’t touching this. What amazes me is the utter hypocrisy of it all. Ferraro got flayed repeatedly for her comment. CNN is talking about Ferraro and Hillary again as I’m writing this.

Wright is Obama’s pastor, mentor, and spiritual and campaign advisor

The Daily Show in a segment about Wright ended with a protester holding a sigh that said “FU USA” followed by another that said “john 3:16.”

(TDS was wondering where in the bible it says “FU America,” as Wright seems to imply…)

Maybe that could be put on all the new Obama bumperstickers: “FU USA –Obama’08.”

I agree that Hillary’s camp should just watch this unfold without comment (at least, for now), but this is just the sort of stuff that the media loves to use to stir the pot. They will ignore Hillary’s policy speeches and comments and come at her (and her campaign staff) with endless questions seeking a reaction to Rev. Wright’s statements. The media will not take “NO COMMENT” for an answer, and will twist any such NO COMMENT answer into something intended to foment conflict because, above all, they want controversy and conflict, as controversy and conflict are what juice ratings.

Bill Press had Hillary’s comm director on this morning, and he deflected the questions about Wright by suugesting they be put to Obama. I thought that was a GREAT move - let him hang himself with this one!

I saw that comment by Mr. Copper and wondered why he would asking if it mattered. Those two were having a conversation and not aware of the idiotic babble drippings. Nothing else matters. I was flipin the dial and from what I can tell there was not one radio station that was not playing it. Yes it matters. What fish bowl are they swimming in?

Rich white folks do run America and Hillary prays with them

When Clinton first came to Washington in 1993, one of her first steps was to join a Bible study group. For the next eight years, she regularly met with a Christian “cell” whose members included Susan Baker, wife of Bush consigliere James Baker; Joanne Kemp, wife of conservative icon Jack Kemp; Eileen Bakke, wife of Dennis Bakke, a leader in the anti-union Christian management movement; and Grace Nelson, the wife of Senator Bill Nelson, a conservative Florida Democrat.

Clinton’s prayer group was part of the Fellowship (or “the Family”), a network of sex-segregated cells of political, business, and military leaders dedicated to “spiritual war” on behalf of Christ, many of them recruited at the Fellowship’s only public event, the annual National Prayer Breakfast. (Aside from the breakfast, the group has “made a fetish of being invisible,” former Republican Senator William Armstrong has said.) The Fellowship believes that the elite win power by the will of God, who uses them for his purposes. Its mission is to help the powerful understand their role in God’s plan.

Comment by mimi | 2008-03-14 10:33:53

You’re really reaching pal.

But that was then and this is NOW. Is she still praying with them? How long did she do so? As you said, this was 1993, when she FIRST came to Washington DC as First Lady.

Let’s really talk…

A lot of good her association with this conservative group did for her with the rabid Right Wing.

Like the person says above, I hope Hillary’s camp says nothing. Let this play out among the voters whose opinions really matter. Not the MSM who try to tell us what to think.

If this matters to voters they have a right to be heard. Frankly, Wright is meaningless to me. I support Hillary because she is the superior candidate. And frankly, I’m shocked and quite curious about Obama’s association with this man and this church. Obama seems to have planned out every aspect of his political life with the utmost care and even cunning. There’s more to his allegiance with Wright, underneath there is a bigger story. I’d sure as hell would love to know what it is.

Comment by simon | 2008-03-14 14:40:55

A lot of good her association with this conservative group did for her with the rabid Right Wing.

Conservative church ladies, essentially, who don’t go around screaming “fuck you, America.”

I mean, the guy is running for President…

BTW, what is it opus dei? the catholic version of this religious elitism, is also very prominent in certain Washington circles, I’ve read.

I believe in God, but ALL those people are a bunch of kooks, aren’t they?

I’ve always been taught a real christian keeps his mouth shut, and gives, without fanfare, or force, without ego, without expectation of power, or riches.

But then, I was taught by nuns.

Comment by PMS | 2008-03-14 10:35:41

Ohhhh, that’s so scary, praying with Conservatives…. not.

That actually a GOOD thing by not demonizing people you might be able to work with for the public good on shared concerns.

Of course, if you are simply anti-Christian, then hateful, xenophobic Christianity like Wright’s (and Obama’s?) is OK. Polarization good, commonality bad.

The right side talking radio heads will have no other choice but to go after Obama on this. Obama just lost the GE, even though the right is not “with” McCain, (yet).
People are not blind to the fact that if you are a member of a church for 20 years, like many people in this land, they will know intuitively that OB fully supports his pastor. Uncle my ass. They are always looking for the biggest ant hill to climb.
It is odd how people can Say God DAM America on one hand and then take 22.5k on the other and YES..Isn’t America F’ing Great?
Hey SEN. OBAMA! Are these the words that matter? What a dull Ice pick.

Comment by DisenfranchisedVoter | 2008-03-14 20:14:45

No, I think MCcain just won Hillary’s voters if Obama wins the nomination. Look out for a lot of McCain Democrats. Obama is the best thing that ever happened to the Republican party. And Dean just screwed over himself and the DNC by helping Obama disenfranchise MI and FL. The Republicans just have to sit back and welcome the thousands who will leave the Democratic Party after this election. Trust.

Heywood,

I’m glad someone else is digging this stuff up. McCain has already backed away from trying to use Wright against Obama.

Hillary needs to be careful too…I take that back.
The people here won’t question her association with anyone. For all that praying, it hasn’t stopped her from dealing with the worst people.
Has anyone talked about her relationship with the Tan family?

Hillary Clinton and the sweatshop tycoon of Saipan
By Byron York
Posted: 03/16/06 12:00 AM [ET]
You may remember news reports a few weeks ago about the nationwide reach of Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton’s fundraising network.

The nonpartisan website PoliticalMoneyLine reported that her biggest political action committee, Friends of Hillary, has raised more than $20 million since the beginning of 2005.

Some of that money came, as it does in any campaign, from donors who gave less than $200. Such contributions do not have to be reported to the Federal Election Commission, and thus we have no information about them.

But of the more than $13 million that came from individuals whose contributions were reported, $5.63 million came from Mrs. Clinton’s “home” state, New York.
Donors in California gave $1.54 million. Washington, D.C., accounted for $603,360. And donors in Sen. Clinton’s actual “home” state, Illinois, gave $554,088.

The list goes on and on. Florida, Pennsylvania, Michigan — until it gets to something called “MP.”

Do you know what “MP” is? Neither did I.

It stands for Marianas Protectorate, and it refers to the Northern Mariana Islands.

It turns out that Sen. Clinton has some big fans in Saipan. And most of them are in the family of one Willie Tan.

Last year, Tan gave $2,000 to Friends of Hillary. So did Raymond Tan, Siu Lin Tan and Josie Tan, all members of Willie Tan’s family.

FEC records indicate that the $2,000 checks from Willie, Raymond and Siu Lin were all received on Sept. 30, 2005, indicating they were sent together. The check from Josie was received Oct. 2.

Together, the Tan family’s $8,000 contribution to Friends of Hillary was more than the senator’s PAC received, separately, from residents of the entire states of Hawaii, Mississippi, Nebraska, Vermont, Utah, Kansas, Wyoming, Alaska, Idaho, South Dakota, Montana or North Dakota.

In the alternate Universe of “if this were Hillary’s pastor,” we wouldn’t even be having this discussion because Hillary would be a private citizen somewhere, begging Chelsea to make her a grandmother.

Every time I have to put my head around the media’s dogged determination to bypass everything about Obama as they reject the notion that they are being biased, I feel as if I’m stuck in that black & white film with Ingrid Bergman and we’re being Gaslighted by Charles Boyer and the MSM.

Somebody wake me up soon. Surely this is a nightmare!

Comment by Mary Jo Kopechne | 2008-03-14 10:44:04

Gaslighted is a great way to put it–it’s totally crazy-making–Sexism 101. The young, charismatic man can do no wrong but the older, experienced woman can do no right.

What can we do about this? I’m serious–the fact that the media is giving Obama a pass is unfriggin believable. Nothing in the NYT today; nothing on any msm sites. The preferential treatment continues. It’s sickening. It’s maddening. I’m disgusted and furious.

I’m sure the Obamabots feel that as the chosen one, the savior of the world, Obama is being protected.

I’m thinking revolution–at least the internet/msm kind. Any ideas? Really.

What we need is a few campaign commercials that feature Reverend Wright’s rantings. Television spots in Michigan, Florida and PA would be great but cost prohibitive. However, radio spots are pretty cheap. Maybe we need a No Quarter 527.

If you want to bring crap like this up ask Hill about these folks.

Hillary Clinton’s Involvement with a Conservative Christian Fellowship Group
September 4, 2007

The Fellowship’s God-led men have also included General Suharto of Indonesia; Honduran general and death squad organizer Gustavo Alvarez Martinez; a Deutsche Bank official disgraced by financial ties to Hitler; and dictator Siad Barre of Somalia, plus a list of other generals and dictators. Clinton, says Schenck, has become a regular visitor to Coe’s Arlington, Virginia, headquarters, a former convent where Coe provides members of Congress with sex-segregated housing and spiritual guidance.

We contacted all of Clinton’s Fellowship cell mates, but only one agreed to speak—though she stressed that there’s much she’s not “at liberty” to reveal. Grace Nelson used to be the organizer of the Florida Governor’s Prayer Breakfast, which makes her a piety broker in Florida politics—she would decide who could share the head table with Jeb Bush. Clinton’s prayer cell was tight-knit, according to Nelson, who recalled that one of her conservative prayer partners was at first loath to pray for the first lady, but learned to “love Hillary as much as any of us love Hillary.”

Cells like these, Nelson added, exist in “parliaments all over the world,” with all welcome so long as they submit to “the person of Jesus” as the source of their power.

Coe counsels that Fellowship cells shouldn’t engage in direct evangelical activism, but rather allow Christian causes to benefit from the bonds that develop within the cells. Former Nixon counsel Chuck Colson provides a rare illustration of the process in his 1976 Watergate memoir, Born Again. Facing prosecution in 1973, Colson allowed Coe to ensconce him in a Fellowship cell with a Nixon foe, Senator Harold Hughes. Hughes became the Nixon hatchet man’s staunchest defender, voting in favor of a possible pardon for Colson and later supporting Colson as he built Prison Fellowship, now one of the most powerful organizations of the Christian right.

That’s how it works: The Fellowship isn’t out to turn liberals into conservatives; rather, it convinces politicians they can transcend left and right with an ecumenical faith that rises above politics. Only the faith is always evangelical, and the politics always move rightward.

These days, Clinton has graduated from the political wives’ group into what may be Coe’s most elite cell, the weekly Senate Prayer Breakfast. Though weighted Republican, the breakfast—regularly attended by about 40 members—is a bipartisan opportunity for politicians to burnish their reputations, giving Clinton the chance to profess her faith with men such as Brownback as well as the twin terrors of Oklahoma, James Inhofe and Tom Coburn, and, until recently, former Senator George Allen (R-Va.). Democrats in the group include Arkansas Senator Mark Pryor, who told us that the separation of church and state has gone too far; Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) is also a regular.

What can we do about this?

Obama, a man running for President of the United States, has a pastor who who has inadvertently summed up Obama’s entire mission, in regard to his pursuit of the highest office: “fuck you, America.”

If that isn’t ROTFLMAO funny, I don’t know what is. Obama looks like a fool, not even understanding his own motivations, this childish, adolescent attitude of bathos, and persecution, fueling his hate, and confusion, NEVER considering his background associations, and criminality, to be an obstacle TO THE PRESIDENCY OF THE UNITED STATES. That’s crazy, isn’t it?

What kind of bonehead thinks he can get elected, really, having associations, from his church, to the academic, to the political, polluted with the most vile, insane anti Americanism, ever, including Rezko?

I think of the stereotype of the angry black man, and think, well, don’t exploit this, don’t feed this stereotype, but it all goes back to the REZKOS, those Chicago and IL people, ALL of it.

But it’s a small group, I would venture the majority of Americans understand this is isolated.

This is quickly turning into a Tennessee Williams play, isn’t it, with a two dimensional satirical twist?

Or a farce.

Everything you said is absolutely so completely true. I honestly don’t understand why the media isn’t doing their job. If it was Hillary they would be lining up outside her home with torches and pitchforks. hell, they would probably try to burn it down with her mother inside. Hillary being a monster and all.

Comment by Rob Gard | 2008-03-14 12:24:34

I can understand that it will be hard for Hillary and her “surrogates” to let Obama/Wright play out without comment from her campaign, especially when watching the media move at a snail’s pace to cover this. I keep thinking of the analogy of placing a large juicy porterhouse grilled steak out on the patio, sitting my dog a few feet away, and repeating “stay…stay…stay…” At least Jon Stewart was able to play the uncensored “God Damn America” clip last night, and I’m sure that made Obama’s folks furious, because that was some major exposure. Hope the rest of the mainstream media pick up on this because they often look to see what the “fake news” programs of Jon Stewart and Steven Colbert are covering to determine what is an actual bona fide story with “legs”.

mimi - keep napping…I fear your nightmare is not yet over.

I want to start planting an idea for post primary/general election: regardless of who is nominated and who wins, we CANNOT walk away from the problem we are confronting on a daily basis: the fact that women still are not equal and, if the press and corporate white males continue to have their ways, we never will be.

It’s time to re-energize the feminist movement…and I bet this time it includes more types of women than ever before.

Comment by grlpatriot | 2008-03-14 11:44:00

Yes, in addition, I’m sick to death of Hillary being painted as a racist by the MSM and the blogosphere. I feel like I’m witnessing victim mentality and a collective purging of “white guilt” over and over and Hillary has become it’s hitch post. Why does this continue to happen? Why is everything blamed on Hillary? Is this some absurd unresolved Oedipal complex, or a gang violence fantasy. I’m not trying to be dramatic. I really want to know from a psychological stand point what the motivation is. What is driving the mob to attack Hillary they way they do? Why does Hillary have to carry our collective shame?

Comment by Shainzona | 2008-03-14 12:01:30

Good point - I have friends who are ga-ga over BO and I can’t figure out why as they never seemed the type before. Maybe it is their collective guilt for the “sins of our fathers”.

Hey, I’m not happy with what this country has done to many of its citizens (Native Americans, too!) but I don’t think we have to do a collective purge to make things right/better.

Hillary and Bill Clinton were doing what I thought was a wonderful job (he was our first black POTUS according to some AA leaders) and it would have been longer lasting and more meaningful to support that direction than to turn the most important job in our country over to someone who is not qualified.

Comment by Fleaflicker | 2008-03-14 14:41:47

I don’t feel any guilt for the plight of African Americans. I checked a long time ago and no one in my family had slaves. And I have been on the side of civil rights since I was barely 10. I have fought for and stood up for civil rights my entire adult life. So I ain’t getting trapped into this guilt thing. I don’t agree with what happened to African people all those years ago and I think that slavery is abhorrent. But I didn’t do it and considering the activities of my life I refuse to hold any guilt for it.

I agree completely. Don’t get mad, get even. Hillary has courageously walked through this fire, revealing that sexism is alive and well. Join a women’s organization and get involved. Emily’s List is a good place to start. I am going to put my money and effort into this organization, instead of the woefully incompetent DNC. Howard Dean and sadly, Nancy Pelosi, are a disgrace.

Comment by The Gringo's Wife | 2008-03-14 12:35:00

I think that comment about the “Zionist” will ensure Obama does not win Florida.

I watched C-Span this morning. I can’t remember the AA reporter that has me wanting to pull my hair out with tweezers.

On the one hand, she said she could not read Ferraro’s mind to say that she didn’t mean a racist remark. But when asked about the Obama’s preacher’s hate speech she went on a long explanation of what the man was saying. Of course it was just an opinion and it reflected the AA view.

I think she is right. A great many things will come out of this campaign. One of them is to open the eyes of the American people to the homegrown radicals we have right here in our country. As our own history has shown us, we have had more attacks in our country from inside the country than any terrorist.

Whether you think Jeremiah Wright is right or wrong, it simply was ugly, trashy talk about Americans. If it doesn’t matter what color his skin is why should Hillary’s?

And that friends, is very devisive.

And if you don’t think they have an agenda to control the government … you weren’t paying attention to Bush.

This is the most appalling thing I’ve seen in a long time. To think, Pastor Wright said that America deserved 911, and he said it five days after the event, when the dead bodies of American office workers, firemen, and police were still buried in the rubble of the World Trade Center. I am beyond disgust.

The direct connection between the candidate and this pastor is quite clear. Yet I wake up this morning and it’s barely being covered at all.

Well, the Republicans won’t ignore it.

This morning I feel through with the Democratic party. I believe they are trying to force this man on us by this horrible, disenfranchising nomination process.

What a waste of Hillary Clinton’s talent to have to run against this man, who is certainly going to go down in disgrace if he is the nominee. What a loss for the country if she is forced out as the nominee because Howard Dean thinks it’s more important to punish states that to count their votes. It sickens me. This whole thing is disgusting.

Comment by Shainzona | 2008-03-14 11:33:30

Eye on the ball. What Pastor Wright said is not the issue. He is not the candidate and if religious leaders are the issue, we need to be attacking McCain over his hypocrisy on the religious right. Why do you Hill Supporters not see this? I don’t like Hill but if she were the nominee I would vote for her. I don’t want McSame as Bush.

By the way I believe Pastor Wright shares the same lunacy as Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson, who made similar 911 comments, except they blamed gays for the 911. McSame’s new BRF’S blamed Hurricane Katrina on a gay parade in New Orleans (HAGEE and PARSLEY).

This Obama hatred is a little seamy from Democrats. I again call for the Reagan’s (The only thing I liked about him) Thou shalt not speak ill of another Repuglican. New commandment “Thou shalt not speak ill of another Democrat”.

Comment by Fran | 2008-03-14 20:26:34

You don’t understand. Hillary supporters have had to endure the hypocrisy of the Obama campaign for months. Talk of “new politics” and healing, while their actions include race baiting, fear-inducing mailings and radio ads, deliberate distortions and lies about Clinton and her policies, and obfuscation about his own record and actions. This is just the latest, and one of the most indisputable, examples. His actions do not match his words–again. Endorsing and supporting an institution for 20 YEARS that spouts separatism and hostility cannot be erased because it is exposed, and he now says, “I reject these ideas.” If he truly rejected his ideology, he would not have been married there, had his girls christened there, and sought this man’s advise for 2 decades. That anyone would believe this is astonishing. It will be interesting to see what effect this has on middle America. And the MSM reveals itself to be even more pathetic with each episode.

Funny, how willing political criminals are to believe in the fairy tale of the “sound proof” room.

Especially if FISA has been invoked against them.

To criticize Jeremiah Wright is tantamount to racism. Hence the crickets. President-to-be McCain’s 527s will have no such problems.

Any Superdelegate who doesn’t understand that point is willing to lose the GE, and maybe even Congress (the “Amerika-Hating, Muslim-Loving, Chicago-Machine” Obama will have negative coat-tails in November).

The Far Left Democrats live under the elitist-illusion that they can “hoodwink” us dumb hicks into giving them their “rightful place” as our leaders. They see in BO a tool as useful as the one the GOP’s Far Right Neo-Cons saw. Whereas the Far Right exploited conservative Christians, the Far left looks to exploit White Guilt (and I admit I’m guilty).

Liberal Elites like Howard Dean (sorry that sounds so tacky) mistake Madison for Wisconsin, San Francisco/Berkeley for California, and Austin for Texas, just as the Neo-Con Elites saw every pew and confessional as a GOP Polling Booth.

No, this a trait more common to the republicans “we hicks” elected, too, like Cheney, and Bush, and Tom DeLay.

Their democratic counterparts aren’t quite as able to pull it all together.

Comment by Lorelynn | 2008-03-14 10:31:10

It’s so weird to watch the media give a total pass to a completely inappropriate candidate one more time, as they did with Bush in 2000. All the warning signs were there - the media ignored all of them. I had felt at the time that the blogosphere could wind up pulling this nation’s fat out of the fire, but the blogosphere seems to be afflicted with the same kind of temptations.

The thing I now know is that journalism must be regulated and the problem is that political news panel shows are as cheap to produce as possible.

There are huge dangers to a nation when the people get the majority of their political information from opinion makers. This cat is out of the bag and two blocks away. I don’t see anyway of rectifying the situation. Hopefully, Hillary will squeak through but if not, we’re f*cked for another four years. And even if she does squeak through, how will the Democratic congress treat her. Think about how Reid forced Dodd to filibuster, while granting the GOP a pass on having to stand up. Will a Democratic congress finally decide to get tough once there is a Democratic president? I worry about it.

And all of it leaves me wondering if our nation is serious being about run well. Maybe we’re a nation that prefers having our indulgences to professionally run government.

Comment by Shainzona | 2008-03-14 11:42:56

I agree - amazing the pass that is being given to an inappropriate candidate a second time around.

When this primary started I stupidly thought that Dems wouldn’t fall back into the trap that is set for them in every election. And we (they) did!!

I say “they” because even though I have been a Democrat for 45 years, I will not be after this primary is over. My husband and I are re-registering independent.

Comment by Fran | 2008-03-14 20:31:28

Shainzona: I am already a registered Independent, and my sister is joining me. Write to the DNC and let them know. Howard Dean has done a horrible job, and he needs to know that he is losing members.

Comment by Caronos | 2008-03-14 22:52:55

It’s a calculated pass. if you remember the last election, in the primary the media went after Dean and was in the tank for wonderful, “electable” Kerry. Same thing here, they’re for McCain so they prop his weakest opponent and try to knock off the one who has a chance. Obama would go from saint to devil in a second flat if he got the nom.

The only easy and fair solution to the delegate problems with Florida and Michigan is to SEAT THEM as they were voted on by the people of their states. The Michigan “undecideds” can be just that… undecided.

The DNC’s attempts to deprive the people of those states (while maintaining a ridiculous Iowa caucus) will be seen by many Democrats as a clear sign that they don’t count.

Comment by Fleaflicker | 2008-03-14 11:45:05

This is one thing I am willing to work across the aisle with republicans and be bi-partisan about. This type of activity should not be acceptable in American politics. I don’t care which political party someone belongs to or what their race is.

I am far from the salute the flag, pledge allegiance to the flag, stand during the National Anthem kinda guy. I am exactly the opposite. For me being patriotic is respecting and standing up for the Constitution. And I do that with vigor. If that isn’t good enough for some… whatever.

But when you start blaming the murder of innocent people on 9/11 on America that is the day I question your patriotism. When you hang out with people that blame 9/11 on America I question your patriotism. And when you give people large sums of money to people that blame 9/11 on America I will question your patriotism.

We need a President that believes in America, not one that blames America.

Hello preacher folks why not get folks focused on real pro life issues, real social justice issues? Why not encourage folks to walk the talk of the core beliefs of Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, and Islam. Encourage folks to walk the talk…then they will figure out who to vote for

Comment by Kat | 2008-03-14 11:04:35

Susan, you are spot on.

Also, Barack Obama was not born Christian. 20 some years ago, he had the opportunity to “sample” several religions, and this is what he chose. You can’t choose your uncle, but you can choose your church.

I also want to point out the fact that America is the most charitable nation in the world. “The voluntary giving of the American people during times of need has been documented in many different studies. These studies show that Americans will give far more towards helping out their fellow man, in times of trouble, than any other private citizenry in the world.”

http://www.america.gov/st/washfile-english/2007/June/200706261522251CJsamohT0.8012354.html

The American private citizens gave 1.78 billion dollars in relief when a terrible tsunami hit Asia. This giving was above and beyond what the United States Government gave in aid. Bringing relief to the suffering is in the very fabric of the American psyche. The Citizens of the US don’t just give lip service to helping they reach out with their pocketbooks and with themselves in volunteerism. The very size of the dollars given dwarfs what any other developed nation could contribute.

Are they part of the AmeriKKKa?

In a few short months after the devastating Asian tsunami a major earthquake hit Pakistan causing great devastation there. The American people stepped up and gave 78 million dollars to aid the suffering there.

Are they part of the AmeriKKKa?

Just like the Obama Campaign, Rev Wright ignores the positive, and goes after the negative. Why preach ‘hate’ when you can preach ‘hope?’ Isn’t ‘Hope’ Barack Obama’s platform?

I am pretty sick of this anti-America ranting anyway.

Comment by Kathleen | 2008-03-14 12:26:22

U.S. Ranks 12th Among Richest Nations for Foreign Aid
By Sonni Efron, Times Staff Writer
WASHINGTON — The United States has significantly increased its foreign aid to poor countries but still ranks 12th
among the 21 richest nations in its overall performance in helping the world’s poor, according to a widely watched
annual report.
Denmark ranks as the most generous country in the world, spending 89 cents per person per day in government aid
and one cent per person per day in private giving, according to the “Ranking the Rich” survey released today by the
Center for Global Development and Foreign Policy magazine.

The United States spent 15 cents per person per day in
government aid to poor nations and 6 cents per person daily in
private giving, the report found.

Land of Penny Pinchers

By NICHOLAS D. KRISTOF
Published: January 5, 2005

So is the U.S. ‘’stingy” about helping poor countries?

That accusation by a U.N. official, in veiled form, provoked indignation here. After all, we’re the most generous people on earth aren’t we?

No, alas, we’re not. And the tsunamis illustrate the problem: When grieving victims intrude onto our TV screens, we dig into our pockets and provide the massive, heartwarming response that we’re now displaying in Asia; the rest of the time, we’re tightwads who turn away as people die in far greater numbers.

The 150,000 or so tsunami fatalities are well within the margin of error for estimates of the number of deaths every year from malaria. Probably two million people die annually of malaria, most of them children and most in Africa, or maybe it’s three million — we don’t even know.

I don’t consider myself from the white privileged class. I am from the poor white trash (that’s one of the epithets I had hurled at me as a child) who grew up with heat, water, electricity, etc. turned off because we didn’t have enough to pay for those plus rent, plus food. I was hungry all the time and my clothes were hand me downs. People of all colors are being laid off, have little or no health insurance, are homeless or are facing foreclosure and are being pushed to the margins. So, stop with your liberal white guilt trip and understand that the majority of whites, browns and blacks are being manipulated and yes, oppressed by those in power.

It is class that is the most insidious and those in power use race, gender, sexual orientation, religion and any thing they can to keep their privileges. They co-opt those they can to continue their domination. And guess what, when other races achieve power, are they benevolent and good to those that are not in their class/group? The answer in the vast majority of cases is a resounding no. For instance, I saw working class whites thrown out of their jobs (down to the lowliest positions) because of the color of their skin. I saw poor blacks left behind and denigrated by those of their own race, who then built gated communities to keep them out and more jails to lock them up.

In labeling all white Americans as oppressors, as racists, as getting their just due from murderous actions such as 9/11 is intellectually dishonest, execrable, cruel and mean spirited, and actually helps to perpetuate the power of the privileged class. This is also true in the converse and all should heed Dr. King’s call: “…they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.”

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. had it right again in the same speech: ” The marvelous new militancy which has engulfed the Negro community must not lead us to a distrust of all white people, for many of our white brothers, as evidenced by their presence here today, have come to realize that their destiny is tied up with our destiny. They have come to realize that their freedom is inextricably bound to our freedom. We cannot walk alone.”

So, I ask Senator Obama, whose words do you follow, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr’s., or the Reverend Wright’s and Malcolm X before he converted to Islam? I ask you to denounce, repudiate, reject Rev. Wright and leave that church and stop the divisive tactics you have shamefully employed to get elected. Otherwise, along with the actions of your campaign and your words (bamboozle, hoodwink, oke doke), I am forced to believe that the Rev. Wright’s and Malcolm X’s are your beliefs and you are unfit to be a United States Senator let alone be the President of the United States.

I agree, yet there are those that are even more oppressed than you, and have been so for far longer!!

In labeling all white Americans as oppressors, as racists, as getting their just due from murderous actions such as 9/11 is intellectually dishonest, execrable, cruel and mean spirited, and actually helps to perpetuate the power of the privileged class.

All right, I’ll narrow the range and call it “white elite ruling class Americans”. Now you are no longer included in the “oppressor class”.
As to 9/11, you miss the point. I doubt bin Laden (assuming it’s him, and it likely is him) meant to avenge domestic American wrongs by his and AQ’s actions. The extermination of native Americans and the 100 or so million Africans brought here to help the white man “conquer the land” had precious to do with what happened that day and AQ’s motivations.
But America’s crimes around the world (ie far away from Peoria) are of such magnitude and have been so pervasive for so long that payback, or blowback if you will, had to be coming. And just you wait for Iraq’s blowback to hit next month or next year or next decade…!!!

Can I just say - there is something so sad about this couple, especially Michelle who I found so impressive at first. My boyfriend caught this though, when the Obamas were interviewed on 60 Minutes last summer. I said wow, I really like his wife. BF said yeah, but she has that look in her eye that says she’s prone to depression. I told him he was nuts.

But imagine hearing these angry messages from the pulpit every. single. Sunday. from childhood into your forties. Their two young daughters are now hearing these messages from an authority figure. every. single. Sunday.

Racism exists, there’s no reason to deny that. But to exercise gratitude in your life, while acknowledging unfairness you have to deal with, gives you a completely different outlook. It allows you to look beyond your own bubble and be proud of other people and even be proud of your country, while simultaneously being pissed off at your country for doing the dopey things it does.

But I hope some AA commenters chime in - how much of black america thinks like this? Is this an anamoly? The people who subscribe to Wright’s beliefs are just living such a different life from the American leaders and folks I’ve read about I truly am shocked and just plain sad that a U.S. Senator and his Ivy-League educated wife are this down on life, this down on America.

Rambling post, sorry.

.

Actually very thoughtful.

Your point about gratitude for the good things, the blessings, while still acknowledging the “dope things your country does” was made very well, and accurate.

And you’re right about the Obamas, and other groups of haters, it’s the same MO, black or white.

Back to reality. Since Halperin is loved here:

Mark Halperin - TIME

Rendell: Obama Would Beat McCain in Pennsylvania
Friday, March 14th, 2008

“Interestingly, I think Senator Obama, if he’s the candidate, will run OK in some of those counties, there’s no question. Hillary Clinton is a better fit for those counties, is a better fit for southwest Pennsylvania, but I think either one of them is going to carry the state in the fall.”

Comment by Nathan | 2008-03-14 12:31:02

And? He said Clinton would do better. But, hey, let’s run with the weaker candidate.

All the polls show Obama at his optimum performance: the media is in love with him, determined to do drag him across the finish line, and he’s running against the Evil Hillary. And yet he still can’t win the battle ground states that are necessary to win the GE. But, hey, he did sure whup her good in Wyoming and Alaska!

I told my mother about this stuff last night because she is a strong Hillary supporter but is very dismayed over the way the press hasn’t reported things like this. I told her that ABC Evening News had done a good expose on it and told her to watch ABC News to see it. Hell, I even watched it so I could talk with her about it. But George Stepsalotonhis was the anchor and though they showed a clip about Hillary never being called a nigger they didn’t show the part about him saying 9/11 was America’s fault. I was incensed. My mother is upset because she doesn’t think the media is reporting this stuff enough. And she has already assured me that she won’t vote for Obama.

Many of us do know how dangerous the stakes are in this election. And it isn’t just because McCain would mop the floor with Obama with this stuff. It’s because the man is a serial liar with slimey friends and questionable morals and we can’t allow our country to be run by such a person.

I am still waiting for that other shoe to drop and I hear it beginning its descent in the distance.

I still have not gotten over this one…

Michelle Obama: “I want to rip his [Bill Clinton's] eyes out!”
From the latest New Yorker–a profile on Michelle Obama.

“I want to rip his eyes out!” she said, clawing at the air with her fingernails. One of her advisers gave her a nervous look. “Kidding!” Obama said. “See, this is what gets me into trouble.”

I just want to know where Keith Olberman and Jack Cafferty, Wolf Blitzer, Chris Matthews are in reporting this?

Michelle is talking about the former president of the United States.

She is talking about the former head of the Democratic party.

She is talking about a man many of us in this country thought was possibly the best president in our lifetimes!

She is talking about the man who made sure I got a roof over my head and my families head ..and made sure we had food and water and all the necessities after the worst $$$ natural disaster before Katrina..the Northridge Earthquake. This is a man who walked down our streets , and his FEMA administer walked down my neighborhood street and demanded we get what we needed under horrible conditions. This is a man who got roads back up in Los Angeles 6 months ahead of the time they were supposed to be finished! Because he had the foresight to offer great incentives to get the roads done.

And as a flight crew for one of the Airlines involved on 9/11 this is a man and his VP who made sure all US flight crew had terrorist training prior to the Millennium and we stopped Hijacking..because we were prepared and got warnings ..on a need basis..but those stopped under Bush!

This makes me so sad..my co-workers were killed on 9/11 , they did not ask for it or deserve it. And to say otherwise is cruel and just adds more hatred where we have had enough.

It was hatred that helped Kill my co-workers, and I fear we have learned nothing since 9/11, after watching these video’s.

I only get sicker by the more i see of this campaign.

I am ashamed of the democratic party. I thought we were better than this. I was certainly wrong.
I became a Democratic Delegate in 2004 to be a voice for my co-workers for the state of Florida

In 2001 I was Flight Attendant of the year for the New York Base of one of the airlines involved on 9/11.
Two of my neighbors lost their sons that day.
My hometown lost the most victims of that horrible crime.

WE Americans did not ask for that, nor did we or anyone in the world deserve that.Since the beggining of man there have been criminals and terrorism. We can control some of it , but not all of it. But we can control who we have represent us.

What they do , they do in our name.

But those who run our governments, we have control over who we elect. ( sometimes)

My vote will probably not count for the nomination as i live in Flordia now.

The very bill that Governor Dean has taken my vote away with, was the very bill that was fought for by American Citizens. Citizens who put up their own money and time and dedication to rid the state of Florida of DRE voting machines. That bill, that the Republicans tagged the primary date change to, was
the Bill that Banned the DRE voting machines in Fla and mandated Voter Verfied Paper Ballots.

Instead of Governor Dean applauding the voters of Florida for figbhting for a bill to assure our votes could be audited and counted, He punished the democrats of Florida.

I will never forgive him for that.
I hold Howard Dean 100% accountable.

And when the bill was signed Governor Dean began his push for Florida to have a caucus ..to rehab our delegate selection.

Many of us wondered Last May , why the push for a caucus in Florida??

Now i have little doubt why.

I believe after seeng what I have seen the past year by the DNC run by Howard Dean, I will leave the Democratic party..but not because I will leave it, but because it has left me.

I flew to Iowa and SC and was a volunteer for John Edwards, I was willing after John Suspended to really look at both candidates left standing and decide who I would support. I had declared and signed a pledge to run as a Delegate for John Edwards, had he been viable in my state.

That decision was made not lightly, but after asking questions and being treated with hatred, nastiness , told to go away, and called a traitor for asking legit questions by the Obama supporters, my choice became alot easier.

I have worked my heart out for the Democratic party , my entire life.

I feel very sad today to realize that the democratic party is willing to dump all those who have done the grunt work for them and donated so much money to them through the years…for a hand full of College kids who many may not even show up to vote.

But it seems Governor Dean has made that choice.

The media also has dumped us ..and what I realized the other day..I enjoy listening to music again , instead of listening to the hatred of Randi Rhodes, and Keith Olberman, and all the nasty pudits, who decided they will tell us who we will vote for, instead of the other way around.

How I miss the days of real journalists, who we never knew who they would vote for, and who were true professionals!

By the way thank you for sharing the info about Florida we’ll write the DNC today and mention it.

Yours was a wonderful post, flyarm, I am so sorry for your grief, and that of your neighbors.

We forget the damage, the HORRIFIC damage that was done that tragic day, I blame Bush, and Cheney, and I am certain Obama’s unfortunate social circle will be exploited by the republicans in regard to this matter, should he earn the nomination.

The argument won’t be over “why did 9.11 happen, and how do we prevent another,” it will be “Obama hates America, and would allow Americans to be murdered by terrorists, just look at his friends, from wright, to rezko!”

This is a stretch (maybe) but this IS how the issue will be sold, by the republicans, preying on the trauma and fear Americans have experienced since 9.11. It is NOT in the better interests of Americans to allow Obama’s idiocy to distract from the real issues facing this country, and I blame the democratic party leaders like Dean, too, for allowing this stupid candidate, and his issues, through the screen. Someone forgot to close the gate.

WTH could they have been thinking, even if they were anti Clinton, why didn’t they choose a better candidate to support?

Were they THAT ignorant?

Comment by S. Markom | 2008-03-14 11:28:43

I am going to be honest knowing that I might get hammered here.

My first election was the primaries in ‘76. I joined my local Dem Club and before going to a meeting that was going to have the reps of each of the candidates I did research in a college library. I am a faithful Jew but not anywhere near orthodox. But Israel is always one important issue with me.

The research I did showed strong anti-Israel sentiment by Jimmy Carter before he ever thought about running for President. I did not vote for him in either election. But was surprised that the other Jewish people did not bother to look past the party affiliation and his campaign rhetoric which was pro-Israel. We have seen since his true beliefs which are consistent with his early writings.

Other than his campaign rhetoric, we have nothing to base an opinion on with Obama other than his limited Senate record which is empty. Therefore we can only project what a President Obama would do on (1) his past associations and (2) his advisors.

Based on that criteria I truly believe that a President Obama would subject Israel to the biggest war it has ever faced.

Obama’s affiliation with his Pastor will leave too many unanswered questions that he will need to resolve and doubtfully will.

Then there is his foreign policy advisors: Zbigniew Brzezinski, Robert Malley, and Samantha Power. You could not find more anti-Israel foreign policy experts and should cancel out his convenient rhetoric of support for Israel. While he may have “fired” Power from his campaign, does anyone doubt she would play a major role in foreign policy?

I do not know how any knowledgeable and self-respecting Jew could possible place a vote for Barak Obama. Whatever Jew does is either unaware of Obama’s past and his affiliations/advisors or they place Party loyalty over their faith and support of Israel.

Comment by Rob Gard | 2008-03-14 13:46:59

Markom,

You’re desperate and pathetic to stoop that low to attack Obama.
Those you just mentioned just happen to be PRO-AMERICAN.

Jewish Clinton Officials Defend Malley

Five Jewish former U.S. diplomats excoriated a campaign to trash another ex-diplomat who advises Barack Obama.

“Over the past several weeks, a series of vicious, personal attacks have been launched against one of our colleagues, Robert Malley, who served as President Bill Clinton’s special assistant for Arab-Israeli affairs,” says a letter circulating in the Middle East policy community, with signatories who also served under Clinton. “They claim that he harbors an anti-Israeli agenda and has sought to undermine Israel’s security. These attacks are unfair, inappropriate and wrong.”

A recent e-mail and Internet campaign claims that Malley, one of a host of former officials who have offered advice to the presidential campaign of Sen. Obama (D-Ill.), “hates” Israel and is allied with Arab radicals.

The Obama-loving elite media is out of touch with the rest of the country. This story is being heard by Americans through talk radio. And there is a huge outrage if you listen to the callers. This is like the swift boat story that sunk John Kerry.

This is the proverbial straw that broke camel’s back for Obama. There are no primaries to cover over the next six weeks. The focus will stay in this story. It is already on to its third day.

This is the beginning of the end for Obama.

Regretfully, the media has become completely unethical, completely biased, distorting the truth, manipulating the public. And that is quite scary…because people will buy into this. Do you remember a time when you could trust the news? Now I watch or hear every piece of news with a grain of salt. I miss good journalism. I really do.

Comment by Fleaflicker | 2008-03-14 12:01:48

I’ve been giving this a little (emphasis on the little) thought and it seems to me that if the MSM isn’t going to cover this then we need to start becoming the media ourselves. And I am talking beyond the blogs and editorials and all that.

Maybe we need to resurrect the very effective 60s format of guerrilla theater. If we could find some way to band together in major cities throughout the country and hold demonstrations with signs and videos and loudspeakers filled with this hateful speech I think we might get somewhere. The MSM would cover it because if we were outrageous enough they wouldn’t be able to ignore us. Of course everything would have to be done legally with no threats or anything of that nature. Just a very robust demonstration to get people’s attention and to enlighten them.

If people are shown the photos of Obama and Wright together on a large poster and then see a broadcast of Wright doing his heinous thing with voice overs from Obama like: I don’t particularly think my church is controversial. Then I think people might begin to see just how bamboozled and hoodwinked they have become. There is no guarantee of success but it seems to me that it’s better than just bitching that the MSM isn’t doing it’s job and dealing with the aftermath.

Like I said. A little thought. Pardon the rant.

First thing I thought of when I read this was “oh, it’s akin to a dirty trick, the band aid on the cheek used to smear Kerry.”

But it’s not, it’s the truth, you aren’t misrepresenting the situation at all, given the context of Obama’s other associations, this is the truth in regard to whom Obama surrounds himself with.

Which goes to show you how potent the association between Wright and Obama really is, and they haven’t even begun to unearth, say, the Rezko-Obama filth.

I would have never considered attacking a fellow Democrat until Obama started his Democrat for a Day crap when his fliers actually asked Republicans to vote for him to stop Hillary. That did it for me. He actually asked and is asking the other political party to help us choose OUR nominee. To me that is heresy and the signal of a coup. So screw Obama. I really don’t care what it looks like. I know that my motives are pure. And that it is in the best interests of our party.

I love your comments. I’m with on the demonstrations. We have to do something. I’ve been trying to get this stuff out to all my friends through email, and through the blogs, but it’s not enough. How could we organize something like that before it’s too late to save Hillary?

Comment by Fleaflicker | 2008-03-14 15:05:38

I am not the greatest organizer but I do know a few things that would be required:

1) The planning would have to be done in private.

2) Someone with connections would have to help do most of the organizing. That wouldn’t be me.

3) Invitations would have to be sent out to only people that could be trusted initially. And they could in turn invite others they trust and so on down the trust line.

4) It could be coordinated from a yahoo or other group where only invited members participated.

I realize this isn’t a master plan, just an outline of a possible strategy of action. If others have more and/or better suggestions they can pass them along. I’m just a blogger.

Comment by Fleaflicker | 2008-03-14 15:07:56

And one other thing.

This would have to be completely disassociated from the campaign. While I am sure they would appreciate the efforts there is no way in hell they would want any fingerprints anywhere.

So take solace in that instead of getting ulcers…..Both will be hyper vigilant (in part ,due to breaking through the societal obstacles of gender/race) and both have earned their status unlike bush’s being born with a silver spoon in his mouth ..they will actually work at their job instead of fucking off..

BUT… if we Americans elect a Bush/like war loving candidate for a third term, some of us will deserve what happens….(simple cause and effect) like oil at $200 a barrel and food so expensive we cant afford it buy any more. its all AVOIDABLE ( if we’re smart) even though these messianic/end time/right wing candidates keep repeating that this war has been thrust upon us by OBL, THEY are the ones who have intentionally perpetuated the world “as it is” now and to coin a phrase from John McCain’s idiotic slogan about Iraq “we are where we are” , well thanks a whole lot Bozo!!! where we are sucks thanks to the likes of you and those like you!!!

I’m afraid you are mistaken. If the Democratic nominee can be easily associated with teaching and preaching that has more to do with Osama Bin Laden than Martin Luther King Jr., the American public will tolerate more war rather than risk an Obama presidency.

I see republican garbage, but just like everything else, from their election strategy, to Iraq, they fail to see how their enemies are setting them up.

So, here we go again, the land of the shithead republican, being set up for another fall.

It’s the law of diminishing returns, in terms of republican technique, for a number of reasons, most having to do with low IQ and low talent, all narcissism, (what do they say, a mouse in a 10 gallon hat?), eventually, there’s nothing left, they cycle with the same shit, less and less return, each time, over, and over.

Obama does relatively well in polls BECAUSE he is mollycoddled by Big Media.

Should he get the nomination, I repeat over and over, Big Media in cahoots with the Republicans, will take him out in one, two weeks, tops. They will have their wars. It’s been like this for a while, and it will continue. There’s no point in being astonished any more.

They wasted millions and years trying to neutralize Clinton in the nineties, they smeared Gore to his knees (although he thought he’d cancel Clinton out with Lieberman…nope, they wanted the real deal), they enabled the theft in Florida, the kicked Dean out of the race, they (in a sneaky fashion) swiftboated Kerry. They kept mum about Ohio.

Why is anyone astonished that they’re leghumping Obama now? Because they love him? The Obama left are so anxious for media validation, for victory over the hated Clintons, that they’ve allowed themselves to become Big Media pawns. The fate of political pawns awaits them.

May I ask why Bill Moyers — known for examining controversial religious leaders — has not once honestly addressed the problem with Barack Obama’s membership in this church for 20 years and calling Jeremiah Wright his spiritual adviser?

(I just searched his site. There’s one passing, very light reference to Wright. It appears that he won’t bring this week’s revelations up in his new show tonight either.)

Maybe they could connect Rezko and Wright, (both Chicago) connect THAT to 9.11, and thereby kill two, maybe three, birds with one stone…

lol.

Does anyone doubt for a second that “Obama’s distancing from Wright” is only for election purposes (as Wright himself has said) ?

Does anyone doubt for a second that once Obama reaches the presidency, Wright, his personal pastor, the person Obama confides in, his soul’s sounding board, yes, Jeremiah
Wright will be a frequent guest and visitor to the WH?

Borger, Cooper et al. can attempt to discount the seriousness of Obama’s association with Wright all they want by asking “who cares?” or by saying “well, but he retired”. That’s disingenuous at best.

People care and will care. Oh yeah. They know this and that is precisely why they try to minimize it… now. Come Nov. it will be very different.

As as for the retirement, so what? …That was this year –and I bet you a “political maneuver”—.

It is absolutely is irrelevant to the issue at hand:
Obama&wife’s association with Wright for the past 20 years. Period.

I have no respect for Borger;; never had much and she has been (quite embarrasingly) in the tank for Obama for a long time.

Did you know that as to last December J.Wright was listed as a national
leader of the Obama campaign’s “African American Religious Leadership
Committee.”

So he is not to Obama just a family member; not just “like an uncle”.
Wright plays a political role and holds (or has held
as of December) a post in his campaign.

No doubt that The Oracle of Countdown would be feverishly preparing his next Specious Comment if the god Rev. Wright were connected with Clinton. But since he’s an Obamaton, not so much….

It Was Very Interesting watching CNN News this morning..Kyra Phillips was on..She had been to Iraq and she Interviewed Iraqi soldiers ..

She asked several soldiers if they were watching the Elections in the united States..They all said YES..

She asked them which Party they Liked…Thwey ALL said DEMOCRAT..

She asked them which Candidate they Liked..They ALL said Hillary CLINTON..only one said Obama..

She asked them Why and they said because we are Living under REPUBLICANS..We know what the Republicans DO..

NOW We want a Democracy..

One Iraqi soldier said he wanted hillary to write a Book on Democracy and send it to Iraq…so they would Know How to have a Real Democracy..

Those Comments from Iraqi Men..Iraqi Soldiers..Had a real Impact on Me..They SUPPORT HILLARY..

They should be replayed..until every American Fully Understands the Meaning..

Comment by TeakWoodKite | 2008-03-14 15:23:12

That was insightful. These soldiers normally have their faces obscured. They showed the promise of a nation and i was left with the feeling that if given correct support and lef to their own devices, they be ok.

Kyra Phillips ended the piece by saying the general staff supports McCain, which I thought was disingenuous.

My dad, my 66 year old social worker dad makes less than 10% of what Mrs. Obama makes each year. He works in the worst sections of town with addicts and other dysfunctional folks trying to help them get healthy enough to keep custody of their kids and raise them reasonably well. It’s miserable, thankless, shit- shit-eating work and he’s done it most of his life because he genuinely loves helping people. He’s called to it. It’s his vocation.

You wanna know how his week ends today? He gets to watch some guy pee into a cup. Glamorous huh?
And all for less than $30,000 a year. That’s the fat cash, too. It was alot less back in the day.

He got started in the business as a community organizer working with housing issues. Strangely enough that doesn’t always lead to wealth, fame, and power, at least not when you decide to keep doing that kind of work instead of hanging it up to hooked into the local power establishment. I guess that’s the difference between actually giving a damn about “the people” and giving a damn about how they can get you where you want to be.

Michelle Obama wants people to make the choice both she and her husband ultimately rejected. Bite me Mrs. Obama.

I too am a Masters level Social Worker (therapist)
and turned down a free ride to law school, passing up the big bucks for public service. I have always worked in the inner city school districts and psychatritic treatment centers in attempt to “undo” the horrific damage done to our society by racism.

I am now being called a racist because I support HRC and defend her as the MSM and Obama camp continue to psychopathically distort her innocuous comments as racist.

I’m sure I’ll get over it but for now I feel nothing but rage and contempt that BO has used the race card aganist a person who has spent her entire life to end the very thing she is now being accused of. As have I …

If the 1) Democratic Party and 2) the mainstream media choose to ignore this sort thing, then there must be some deal for McCain to win. Honestly, who would put anything past Democrats these days??? The media is setting us up, even if the Democrats are just being STUPID. Frankly, as one of those “older, unwanted female voters,” they can count my money to stay in my wallet at this point. I wrote Phil McNamara the same thing with regard to Michigan. Yeah, enable the guy who CHOSE to stay out of the primary…my question is, when is Obama going to be held ACCOUNTABLE for his actions????

Comment by brian | 2008-03-14 18:03:57

Just for fun:

1. It should be ignored. Go read Obama’s statement at Huffington Post. He completely denounces Wright. He wasn’t anywhere near the church during those sermons, and he clearly doesn’t believe them.

2. Giving money to your church is called tithing, and is outlined as a way to support your church by the bible itself. $22 K is about 2.5% of his income from 2006. He wasn’t giving to Wright, he was supporting his church, which all religions deem necessary.

3. Obama withdrew his name from the Ballot in Michigan based on an SIGNED agreement from all Candidates, including Hillary. He stood up to his word, and Hillary broke hers. I’d rather support a candidate that lives up to his word, than one that makes a promise one day, and brakes it the next.

Comment by John D | 2008-03-14 18:11:58

Are you telling me Rev Wright is a schizo? During Obama’s absence, he preaches hate, God Damn America; but when Obama is present, he preaches hope and God Bless America?

His response can only fool certain people, and I am not one of them.

This is baloney ( I guess you like it).

You are badly mistaken on what the pledge agreed upon says Removing his name form the MI ballor ballot was a political calculation he
unilaterly chose to do later.
Read the pledge, learn the facts and comment afterwards.

As for Obama’s piece at HuffPo he is full of sh— : do you seriously believe Obama didn’t know about all those sermons over the years ? 20 years ??

As I said, you obviously enjoy baloney.

“Obama withdrew his name from the Ballot in Michigan based on an SIGNED agreement from all Candidates, including Hillary. He stood up to his word, and Hillary broke hers.”

Oh really? Is it in the Smithsonian? And what does it say, “Barack Obama’s going to lose MI, so in his dirty Chicago way, he persuaded Edwards and Richardson to go along with a scheme to disenfranchise the state instead. I decided to go along because I think states that don’t support the Holy Son are unfair. Democracy bad, barck pretty. XXXOO Hillary”?

Making up self serving nonsense is a pastime much indulged in by your hero, and easy to get away with in room of low-information Obama cultists, but most people like proof for false asertions. Just or fun, go tell bunch of Obama drones that he and Rezko were in cahoots because Obama loves kids and thought having a slum bulding collapse on them would be a humane way to spare them the toils of life. Why, I can already hear my family chanting “Kill kids to save them, Obama saves, let me drink yor bathwater, barack”

“I’d rather support a candidate that lives up to his word, than one that makes a promise one day, and brakes it the next.”

Look, an announcement that he can no longer support Obama. Walk toward the light…

Something lost in the words of this bigoted minister is how repugnant his assertion about AIDS is to the gay community. He seems to think that only blacks are suffering from AIDS. He seems to forget that AIDS became an epidemic on Ronald Reagan’s watch and quickly decimated the gay male community. And yet, Reagan couldn’t even bring himself to talk about it, let alone do anything about it. Yes, black people are assuredly suffering from AIDS. But so are other minority groups. Their pain is not any smaller just because they aren’t in Wright’s preferred group of victims.

CD,

I heard this gay guy interviewed a few years ago. He may have died…don’t know.
He believes it.

Boyd Graves, an Annapolis graduate who put himself through law school, is convinced the U.S. government created AIDS in a secret program aimed at killing African-Americans.
http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/metro/20030703-9999_7m3boyd.html

Considering that our government has sprayed her own citizens on US soil (read Clouds of Secrecy) and won’t admit that Agent Orange causes harm, I’m not surprised that people think that AIDS is a form of biological warfare.

I forgot to mention Tuskegee.

I wonder how long it will be, if ever, for MSM to go beyond the racist and anti-American parts of Wright’s sermons and realize that Trinity is based upon Marxist ideology. BO couldn’t have missed that.

Oh..SusanUn…thank you so much for hitting the nail on the head. I think and feel I am trapped in an Alice in Wonderland place where anything Hillary is bad and anything BO is good. This church thing is downright scary. It is divisive. And this guy wants to be president?! Why do the media talking heads find it so difficult to even want to question this? Do they honestly think that being so closely affiliated with a black supremacist Reverend is okay? And what Geraldine Ferraro said was so terrible? I am desperate for a reality check!!!

All I can say is………if I attended a church for 20 years with my wife and children, I certainly would know what was being preached before I became a member. This is so ludicrous. How can that man look America in the eye and say he had no idea. And know what? These idiots will still support him. I watched the Anderson Cooper interview with Obama. He would not go against this Reverend. Even went so far as to say what a great man he had been and all of his credentials. I wonder if the Reverend’s trip out of the country was no accident. The plot thickens.

Comment by madanthony45 | 2008-03-14 22:27:17

And………let me say this……Let’s give Obama the benefit of the doubt. Let’s say he wasn’t influenced by his Reverend’s hatred. His children are another matter. Children do not have their own views on life. These little girls know only what the adults taught them. Michelle certainly was influenced. Did she teach her daughters her way of thinking?
