Breaking: Obama Himself Exploits “Tonya Harding” Remark

UPDATE: I have rewritten this story extensively to 1) ensure that Jake Tapper’s report is accurately described, and 2) to point out that Barack Obama made the Tonya Harding remarks at a rally in December 2007, three months before the DNC official anonymously spoke to Mr. Tapper, which leaves me to me wonder how the DNC official got that “colorful” description in his mind in the first place.

Original story, edited: Remember how Jake Tapper’s March 26 story pointed to a remark that Hillary will have to use “Tonya Harding” tactics to win the nomination, which was attributed to an anonymous “DNC official”? That is true. But now Obama himself is exploiting the remark, as Corrente Wire reveals via an ABC News story that is dated December 2007. (Did the DNC official pick up the Tonya Harding “meme” from hearing Obama?)
ABC News’ Sunlen Miller reports: Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., told a crowd in Vinton, Iowa Thursday that he’s not going to pull a Tonya Harding on his rival candidates.
“Folks said there’s no way Obama [referring to himself in the third person] has a chance unless he goes and kneecaps the person ahead of us, does a Tonya Harding,” Obama joked, referring to the female skating champion who conspired to harm a competitor during the 1994 U.S. Figure Skating Championships.
“We decided that’s not the kind of campaign we wanted to run,” he said. …
There you have it.
It came from Barack Obama and his campaign, not from an anonymous DNC official, as Tapper originally reported. I failed to correct this sentence.
However, the point is that Obama has exploited the Tonya Harding “meme” since December 2007, as the above-cited ABC News story makes clear.
Tapper’s reporting is accurate, he contends, and I trust him. However, where did the DNC official get the notion about Tonya Harding? Because Obama has been using that remark since December 2007 (or perhaps even earlier)?
Obama claims he doesn’t want to run that “kind of campaign,” then he sets off incendiary verbal bombs like that? In a RALLY speech? Back in 2007?
And he EXPLOITS the remark by repeating it?
Whatever happened to hope? Whatever happened to “we are the ones”? Whatever happened to the rest of his B.S.?
It’s gone poof. But that what happens with “smoke and mirrors” campaigns.

I should be outraged. But it makes perfect sense to me that this originated with not only the Obama campaign but from Obama himself. And chances are that the Tapper story is true as well. An anonymous DNC official (shhhhhh…. don’t tell anybody but it’s Donna Brazile) made a call to Tapper to take the heat off from Obama so he could then use the remark on the campaign trail.

I have a clear memory of Obama saying the TH comment on an airplane while talking to some press folks….it was on ABC new?
I remember it because of the “kneecapping” bait he was chumming with. (very Soprano of him) First put it out there and then “shoot it down”. The end result is a residual inference that is deniable.

A friend of mine from North Carolina received a call yesterday. The woman opened the call with the observation that she was calling on behalf of Barack Obama and the Democratic Party.
My friend, a devoted Hillary supporter, ripped into her about that.
The Obama campaign cannot represent itself as calling on behalf of the Democratic party.
That is wrong on so many levels — and probably against many DNC rules.
I hope they get called on the carpet for this flagrant violation of the intent and spirit of the Democratic party.
This message is not the same that was report yesterday by Tappers.
This is what Tappers reported.
“She will have to “break his back,” the official said. She will have to destroy Obama, make Obama completely unacceptable.
“Her securing the nomination is certainly possible - but it will require exercising the ‘Tonya Harding option.’” the official said. “Is that really what we Democrats want?”
In this rally in Iowa, Obama didn’t say that HRC was doing TH option. He just said he won’t do it. But the hypocrisy is real. He is doing TH option since accusing Clinton as racist in SC.
I have edited my story — throughout — to make it clear that the remark did not originate with Obama or his campaign. The point is that Obama is now exploiting the remark in his rally speeches.
The article cited is dated December,2007 - I think the issue is that Obama coined this phrase first in the process and now others are also using it. So as far as I’m concerned, he began its use. And therefore has to accept some responsibility.

Since Obama made those remarks about Tonya Harding in December 2007, one has to wonder how Tapper’s anonymous source got that phrase in his head.

It doesn’t matter that immediately after Obama said he was above all this TH stuff, he sent two surrogates (McPeak, Lewis) out to call Bill Clinton a McCarthyist and throw out the old blue dress meme. That’s not “kneecapping” because Obama already said he doesn’t do that stuff, so it’s just fine. And besides he was on vacation. And it was Hillary’s fault anyway for ignoring him.

The comment did not come from Sen. Obama nor did it come from anyone on or associated with his campaign. He may have used the analogy before — others have as well — but that wasn’t who the Democratic official was, nor was it anyone on or associated with his campaign. By the way, I have appreciated your reporting on the whole. You, and others at ABC News, have been far more forthright in writing about the negative tactics apparently emanating from the Obama campaign as well as any perceived to have come from the Clinton campaign.
In short, you haven’t drunk the Kool-Aid — from either campaign — and we are grateful. All we want is for reporters to do their jobs.
Susan, I did see a video yesterday, either on CNN or MSNBC with Obama talking about breaking kneecaps, oddly enough the speech had a 2007 date on it. He did not mention Kerrigan by name, but did allude to her. I do believe that the comment originated from him considering this fact, just my opinion. Maybe someone can find the video. It was yesterday on either of the networks during the hours of 8:00 to 5:00 most likely.

I have a question on “associated with his campaign”: does that mean a SD that is currently unaligned? Or, does it mean only surrogates of the Obama campaign (I am also including SDs that have come out for Obama to be surrogates)?
In any case, this does not preclude that the talking point did not originate from the Obama campaign and/or the source is “sympathetic” with his campaign. I have my suspicions that this source is not a person who is “undecided” on this race.
The source was probably pulled from Jake’s ass, alexei. The media wouldn’t even be reporting on Jake’s Hillary Hit piece if this same “anonymous source” said something comparatively negative about Obama. The “TH meme” reported by Jake Tapper is at best extremely sloppy journalism and at worst, is a part of a well orchestrated smear campaign abetted by a complicit media in conjunction with the Obama campaign. Take your pick - Jake Tapper shouldn not have made this report without the “source” being named.
Again, why is Jake coming to NoQuarter to ensure that “misinformation” is corrected and he won’t name a source?

To add, I watch GMA at times, and, without fail, Diane Sawyer has been consistently professional, and objective, when dealing with Obama, and Clinton, a welcome relief.

There will be no relief from Big Media. EVERYTHING has been, and will be, spun against Clinton.

WASHINGTON — Obama’s support among Democrats nationally has softened.
“GLORK” Sen. Barack Obama’s support among Democrats nationally has softened over the last month, particularly among men and upper-income voters, as voters have taken a slightly less positive view of him than they did after his burst of victories in February, according to the latest New York Times/CBS News poll.
The survey suggests that Mr. Obama, Democrat of Illinois, may have been at something of a peak in February, propelled by a string of primary and caucus victories over Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York, and that perceptions of him are dramatically trending downward.
Mr. Obama’s favorability rating among Democratic primary voters has dropped seventeen percentage points, to 42 percent, since the last Times/CBS News survey, in late February. While that figure is steadily declining, this dramatic decline came in a month during which he endured withering attacks from Mrs. Clinton, and responded to reports that his exiled former pastor had made politically inflammatory statements from his church’s pulpit in Chicago, and swirling questions about what Barack Obama did in Harlem — from which he cannot extricate himself.
The events of the last month appear to have fundamentally altered the race for the party’s nomination and provided Mrs. Clinton’s campaign extensive evidence of a collapse in Mr. Obama’s standing or an overwhelming preference voiced for Mrs. Clinton by Democratic and Republican voters in polls: — perplexing developments in Obama’s ongoing Campaign Crisis, that could be used to persuade uncommitted super-delegates to sign on with Hillary Clinton.

For a United States Senator, Barack Obama has been doing a lot of explaining about the company he has kept for the last 17 years or so. A politician can not chose the family he has. However; he can chose the pastor he keeps. The Rev. Jeremiah Wright has influenced Mr. Obama’s liberal-elitist-separatist-racist views on a variety of subjects. This may be what happened to Obama over the years, as his MUSLIM radicalism and demonize the White-Saxon-race, may expel the same Rev. Wright belief; that America and its US allies brought on 9/11. In a sincere re-examination of his world-view, Obama’s Mea Culpa-Apologia says this guy is like an uncle to him. But shouldn’t his long term relationship with this despicable character call into question at the very least Obama’s judgment?
