Jeremiah Wright Was a Muslim: Why That Matters

The Obama-lovin’ media wants you to believe that the Reverend Wright earthquake has passed. Some would have you believe that Obama turned a negative into a positive with his embarrassing public contortionism defending Wright and giving us a history lesson on American racism from Plymouth Rock to the Freedom Riders, as if Reverend Wright’s inexcusable hate needs a context.
Nothing is further from the truth.
There is much to be told about Reverend Wright, Obama’s mentorship with this hate-monger, and the larger implication this relationship has for the Democratic Party and its strained coalition.
Long before Reverend Wright entered the national stage, Ryan Lizza of The New Republic, in the March 19, 2007 issue, dropped this little gem:
Wright was a former Muslim and black nationalist who had studied at Howard and Chicago, and Trinity’s guiding principles–what the church calls the “Black Value System”[Emphasis added]
Why should Reverend Wright’s past as Muslim concern us?
First, Reverend Wright’s hate sermons are virtually identical as those given by his good friend, Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan, who followed in the footsteps of Malcolm X. For example, this description by Ben Wallace Wells, published in Rolling Stone—a magazine that favors Obama, most likely in serving the interests of their demographic–in February, prior to the release of the Wright videos, makes clear the connection:
Wright takes the pulpit here one Sunday and solemnly, sonorously declares that he will recite ten essential facts about the United States. “Fact number one: We’ve got more black men in prison than there are in college,” he intones.
“Fact number two: Racism is how this country was founded and how this country is still run!” There is thumping applause; Wright has a cadence and power that make Obama sound like John Kerry.
Now the reverend begins to preach. “We are deeply involved in the importing of drugs, the exporting of guns and the training of professional KILLERS. . . . We believe in white supremacy and black inferiority and believe it more than we believe in God. . . . We conducted radiation experiments on our own people. . . . We care nothing about human life if the ends justify the means!”
The crowd whoops and amens as Wright builds to his climax: “And. And. And! GAWD! Has GOT! To be SICK! OF THIS SHIT!…This is as openly radical a background as any significant American political figure has ever emerged from, as much Malcolm X as Martin Luther King Jr.
The racist paranoia of AIDS being developed by white America to kill blacks and other inexcusable statements are from the same framework of the NOI and Farrakhan. In fact:
In 1984, Wright was one of the inner circle that traveled with Farrakhan to visit Libyan strongman Col. Muammar Khadafy. The ostentatious Farrakhan junket came at a time when Khadafy had been identified as the world’s chief financier of international terrorism, including the Black September group behind the Munich Olympics massacre.
Secondly, while Obama’s plagiarism of a speech delivered by Nation of Islam leader Malcolm X to mostly black audiences has been correctly noted as a racial dog-whistle, it has not been examined in the larger context of the black separatist movement from which it originates.
Third, why did Wright’s church put the racist and anti-Semitic Farrakhan on the cover of its magazine Trumpet? Why did Trinity Church post:
a manifesto by Hamas that defended terrorism as legitimate resistance, refused to recognize the right of Israel to exist and compared the terror group’s official charter – which calls for the murder of Jews – to America’s Declaration of Independence[?]
The three points above show a consistent pattern of Wright parroting not only the language and but also the attitude of the Nation of Islam.
Wright has synthesized Christianity and an odious brand of Islam. When two religions become one, social scientists refer to this as a syncretic religion.
For example, the Mayans developed Mexican Catholicism as a subversive way to maintain their culture in the face of Spanish conquest.
The Reverend Wright may no longer be a Muslim, but he clearly embraces Hamas, Minister Farrakhan and others because they dovetail with his established world view, as with other syncretic religions.
Reverend Wright’s hate speeches are a glimpse of someone who has blended Nation of Islam and Black Nationalist Liberation Theology into a subversive Christianity, one that would hardly be recognized by most black Christians, and much less so mainstream American Christians, regardless of color. Indeed, one suspects that Jesus himself would have a difficult time recognizing the message delivered by Jeremiah Wright.
Obama’s 20-year mentorship with Wright not only demonstrates an incredible lack of judgment, but also highlights his views on race. Comments about his Grandmother being a typical white person may simply sound immature, unappreciative, and dismissive of the woman who helped raise him, but in the tradition of Malcolm X, Louis Farrakhan, and Jeremiah Wright, calling someone a typical white person is an insult indicating a world view.

So Obama criticizing Wright makes it all go away, right? Wrong! Obama sits in the pews for 20 years not listening to the hateful things Wright is saying (so Obama says) and contributing large amounts of money to Wright’s church. But only when this gets noticed in the campaign does he criticize Wright. Does anybody other than me find the timing just a little suspicious? I continue to be haunted by the belief that much of the campaign money coming into Obama’s coffers are coming from out of the country and in larger amounts but then broken down (so as to appear to be small “new” campaign contributors) by the kind of folks like the “student” you have pointed out. I am so grateful that others see this problem also… I feel strongly that we are watching an American election - or at least the primary -being co-opted by elements of the Rezko/Auchi strain and worse than we can imagine. And through Khalidi, the U of Chicago, and Ayers, didn’t Obama participate in fundraisers for the Palestinians, even work on obtaining grants? I know he did it for the neighborhood Catholic church, in Chicago.
So, theoretically, that would be a way of beating the system, funnel money to Palestine through a US charity, say, set up a “call center” and have money donated back, by “students.”

The Woods Fund actually gave 1 or 2 grants to the Arab American Action Network (AAAN) while Obama was on that board.

My question here is the following: is there a way to check any of this if one is not a “certified brilliant internet” person? It does seem to be a can of worms - a big can of worms. We know the MSM won’t be looking for how this works but is there somebody out there that does? If one looks at the website “Rezko Watch” today, there is reporting as to the “fact” (ok, I have to do that cause hey I wasn’t there) that the Interpol fugitive Aiham Alsammarae was spotted at - I believe - the Jordanian airport and some extensive material on why it would appear that the US is in some sense not exactly protecting him but turning the other eye etc and the complex connections that are coming out regarding Rezko and Obama’s attempts to do business with this man. Large amounts of money which appears to have “gone missing” is interesting and it increasingly appears that Obama simply also turned a blind eye - or is perhaps the beneficiary of all of this…..

I guess what bothers me most is that not only did Barack and Michelle Obama feel spiritually uplifted by Rev. Wright’s weekly doses of racial hatred and divisiveness, but this is the way that they chose to indoctrinate their children, as well, thus raising the next generation of racist dividers. I find it particularly disturbing that the excerpts of Rev. Wright’s sermons that are being constantly played on TV are taken from a DVD sold by his church of the sermons that he considered to be his “best.”
Some of the Obamas’ real feeling are starting to come out, mostly through public exposure of Michelle. But much of the Obama myth still persists. Yesterday, I heard an Obama supporter claim that Obama was “…born disadvantaged and rose above this despite all of the obstacles being thrown in is path.” This is absolute fabrication, but it tracks very nicely with the Wright/Farakhan/liberation theology dogma.
I guess they feel that if they repeat it enough, it will be accepted as truth.
Please cite some examples of this “weekly” hatred and divisiveness. How did videotaped excerpts from one sermon (played over and over out of context) and the Hamas stuff in the trumpet become weekly????

Now, if there were more instances and/or a pattern you and others of a like mind would obviously have more “evidence” than the few things you continue to tout and use as a weak basis for jumping to conclusions.

the vagueness of Trinity UCC’s “Christianity” (and the United Church of Christ’s, for that matter) could lend itself to an acceptance of Jesus the Christ as the great prophet that Islam holds him to have been… especially if it’s not a Semetic Jesus, but a black African Jesus, as opposed to the divine incarnational figure orthodox Christianity holds him to have been.
This could put TUCC and Jeremiah Wright closer philosophically/theologically to the Nation of Islam’s position than to orthodox Trinitarian Christianity (not to be confused with Trinity UCC’s Christianity).

Liberation Theology, from which Black Liberation Theology postulates that individual congregations interpret theological principals that are often in opposition to established doctine. Aside from the promotion of a marxist style socio-economic reform there is a redefinition of Jesus as a political radical. One reason it was soundly rejected within the Roman Catholic Church and perhaps why The Good Pastor Wright is part of the UCC which is non-denominational. There is no doctrinal authority in the UCC, he can preach literally anything he wants without sanction.

Christianity is a much bigger sell in the AA community. Especially among AA women. Christian preachers have way more sway. I don’t think it’s any deeper than that.

His dad was a muslim, his mom married another muslim — she may even have had to convert to Islam, they are very strict about that. At the very least he seems to have had a lot of exposure to that religion. I am still waiting to find any more info on his 1981 trip to Pakistan and Hyderabad, India (has a large muslim population). Again, at the very least he seems to have a curiosity about it. What an antithesis to Repubs Christian nation? (I personally am an atheist and could care less what his religion is.) As we know very little about this guy, and the things that we do know, Rezko, Auchi, Rashidi, Wright, raise only more questions. So, what exactly is his world view?

I’m English. I actually think that Obama might be the better candidate of the two because of the IWR issue.
However, I also think he’s a feeble candidate:

I support Hillary Clinton and I will not vote for Obama. I think Wright’s hate speech is reprehensible. The fact that Obama knew what Wright’s political perspectives were, but remained in his church gives us some idea of what Obama’s political perspectives were–and still are.
But some facts are true, whether or not you like Obama; whether or not you like Rev. Wright. And, progressives should learn to differentiate. Wright’s hate-speech is appalling.
But, Palestinians are entitled to basic human rights; Israel denies those basic human rights on a daily basis. This is simply a fact. And, the United States colludes in allowing Israel to get away with it. If you believe we should intervene in Darfur to save lives; shouldn’t you believe that we should not support human rights violations by Israel?
Basic human rights for Palestinians is something that all progressives should support. The middle east is certainly a complex place; and black/white thinking doesn’t help expand the dialogue on how the US should encourage peaceful political progress for all people in the middle east. Israel–as a nation and a government–as committed numerous atrocities against Palestinians.
One need only go to the Israeli Human Rights organization B’tselem to read their reports to see that even Israelis recognize their own country’s human rights abuses. Israel is–in fact–operating a system of apartheid in the Palestinian Territories–including Jewish–Only roads, which Palestinians are not allowed to travel.
I am disturbed when I see progressives who think to support Palestinian human rights is to be against Israel; that’s an argument that plays right into the hands of Likudniks like Bibi Netanyahu. It certainly doesn’t help Israel, and it certainly isn’t peace or political progress that Bibi wants. It’s Palestinian land–why do you think they keep building settlements?
Progressives who don’t know much about Israel should read Avi Shlaim’s book, The Iron Wall. Shlaim is a highly respected Israeli historian.

I am not going to discuss issues of territory, the fight goes much deeper than land, it’s akin to the fights say, the Germans, and the Poles would have, here, in America, in Chicago, while my father was growing up in the 40’s and 50’s.
But the point you made in regard to HOW Israel is choosing to defend via the Likudniks is highly pertinent. Israel, from what I have read, could almost be called a failing state. Many of it’s problems, domestic, and foreign, are due to it’s militaristic, myopic, and neocon methods.
If the US can be gamed asymmetrically, quite successfully, when a Cheney and Bush take power, so can an Israel, when their neocon equivalents prevail. Larry’s post of a couple weeks ago basically delineated how the US was defeated, under Bush, asymmetrically, in seven years: economically, politically, and military.
What he didn’t mention was the press cooperation necessary to assist in this disaster, all in the name of money, and greed, and Gordon Gekko.
Israel has far less to fear from an Iranian missile than it does from, say, a joint Iranian, Russian, Chinese asymmetric psy ops, feeding fear, the creation of an apartheid state, and a cultural and economic stagnation, same as the US under Bush.
If the goal were to isolate Israel and the US, increasing Iranian hegemony, and destroy Israel from within, isolated, using it against the US, I would say significant progress was made.
BTW, I agree Palestinian rights must be recognized, alnong with a secure Israeli state.
The neocons have written about their plans for Israel — one of the things they want to get rid of is the socialized medicine and other Neocon unapproved state functions.

The thing about religion is that many people don’t internalize the teachings — they put on religion like a coat. Some individuals do internalize the teachings of their religion — so if their particular religion focus is on the extreme and negative — then that becomes part of their core belief system.
We don’t know what sort of religious person Obama is — does he put on the coat or has he internalized Rev. Wright’s theology and is this theology part of Obama’s core belief?
Religiousosity of Americans is really a deep subject and closely tied to the history of our Nation.
This is an important subject because it goes to Obama’s core belief system — and the fact that we really don’t know that much about the guy who want to be President.

In this way, the US can be gamed politically(Bush choosing sides publicly with Israel, Afghanistan, Pakistan, cowboy Middle Eastern diplomacy), economically ( China, oil, housing, wall street gluttony at the expense of the consumer), and militarily(Iraq, Middle East, Wall street gluttony). And it all came to head in 9.11, and Iraq, didn’t it?
So given that scenario, and it’s just that, a scenario, Israel could be defeated with 25 years, internally, given the situation in the US stays static, as does the Israeli government, in terms of the neocon, militaristic fantasy, and a refusal to initiate chages, or admit failure.
I’m also considering of China’s relationship with Iran, the Middle East, Africa, and the rest of the world, for oil, same with Russia.
And I guess the thinking is China’s consumerism will displace that of the US.
It’s not necessarily realistic, though, another President as dumb as Bush, and Cheney, and well, …

I think what is scary is that here we have this clip of theses students in the Gaza saying they are calling random phone numbers in the USA to solicit funds for Obama, I just cant understand how this was not questioned by anyone especially the media.
What states are they calling, whose phone numbers do they have and where did they get them from, I think that should really concern some people.
Aside from their positions on Black Nationalism, the overall character of Wright, Meeks and others like them is fundamentally similar to the right wing authoritarian versions of evengelicals.
The calls to God to “damn America” have an attitude and approach similar to John Hagee, who claims Katrina was the revenge of God on gays and other sinners in New Orleans.
As Bill Moyers recently pointed out on Frontline, no particular evangelical speaks for all evangelicals. There’s at least 27 varieties of Baptists, with varying views. Moyers himself was ordained as a Baptist minister.
The same can be said of other religious denominations. Bin Laden doesn’t speak for all Muslims, Wright doesn’t speak for all AA Christians or Muslims, and even the Pope doesn’t speak for all Catholics. In my own case, even though James Holsinger has been the bully pulpit head of the Methodist Judicial Council, his notorious anti-gay positions don’t even come close to speaking for me or millions of other Methodists.
I think it’s less significant that there’s a Muslim factor for Obama, than the specific views of his endorsers. Just as McCain is endorsed by Hagee, Obama’s endorsement by those who would hijack ownership of God for their own authoritarian agenda is Obama’s real problem with Wright and Meeks.
A real religious hero like Tutu has never really talked in this way. And his life was in real danger for decades.
Yet I can understand how and why black churches in the US might have got to this point. They’ve been largely ignored for decades by the media and have faced no particular intellectual challenge by commentators. So they got a bit sloppy. The media mainly concentrated on nutbag rightwingers (probably justifiable given the pwoer they have flexed) and now that black churches are on the cusp of gaining enormous formal power with Obama as their figurehead: the media is sitting up and taking note of the wilder accusaions and discontents expressed in black churches.
I was clueless about how powerful the churches are within the Democratic party. I doubt the Mormons would dare flex their considerable muscle like this–although they tried a little with Romney. Of course the Baptists run the GOP so they would face a theological death match.
A theological dimension to the Democratic primary is a huge shock to me.
We are supposed to be secular.
One thing I would like to caution. The use of the word Muslim is slurring into the other titles: Black Nationalist, Black Liberation Theology, Black Separatist, Anti-American, Terrorist. Fellow bloggers, please be careful not to conflate Muslim with these other things in future writings. All religions have violent scripture and peaceful scripture (except Buddhism seems to be free of the violent stuff) and as we know there are many peaceful, rational, hard-working, even American-loving Muslims out there.

Again look at how similar McGovern, Dukakis and Kerry’s campaigns are to Obama’s candidacy. You only have to look at history to see that Obama is sailing into the wind, paddling upstream, going against a current and trying to climb a greasy pole–all at once.

I have been following this election very closely, and I never heard or read that Rev. Wright had formerly been a Muslim.

Actually, it should matter because of his links to American hater Louis Farrahkan. Wright has previously praised Farrahkan, and has also given him some type of award in the recent past.
