Hillary’s Reviews Are In: ‘The Winner,’ ‘Strong Presence,’ ‘In Her Element’

Via campaign press release — I’ll add the links later:

Hillary dominates Philadelphia focus group. “NYDIA HAN: The real take away is this. We now know who won the debate according to our focus group. Take a look. Senator Clinton is the debate winner, at least according to our focus group. 23% believe Senator Obama won while 50% believed Senator Clinton won.” [WPVI Post-Debate Analysis, 4/16/08]

ABC News’ Rick Klein – ‘Clinton is back to the strong presence we saw early in the cycle.’ [ABC News Political Radar, 4/16/08]

NBC News’ Chuck Todd – Obama ‘did not have a good night.’ [MSNBC Post-Debate Analysis, 4/16/08]

NBC News’ Chuck Todd—Obama’s answer on Ayers and the flag ‘were simply weak.’ “His answer on Ayers and the flag question were simply weak; He seemed unprepared for them; Kinda surprising because he normally has a decent rant against “old politics” and yet “old politics” questions seemed to stump him.” [NBC First Read, 4/16/08]

The Atlantic’s Marc Ambinder – [T]here’s no way Obama could fared worse. [The Atlantic’s Marc Ambinder, 4/16/08]

Washington Post’ Chris Cillizza— Obama ‘struggled quite a bit’ when asked about Rev. Wright. “…He struggled quite a bit more when asked to answer for Wright, his former pastor.” [Washington Post, The Fix, 4/16/08]

New York Times’ Katharine Seeyle: Hillary’s ‘in her element as she goes into details.’ “She’s becoming expansive, seemingly in her element as she goes into details; Mr. Obama does not look as thrilled to be still standing there.” [New York Times, The Caucus, 4/16/08]

Talking Points Memo’s Josh Marshall – Hillary ‘certainly seems more self-assured.’ “She certainly seems more self-assured on the Iran question than Obama did. The question of extending an American security umbrella to Israel is very dicey. And he could clearly see he was on delicate territory.” [Talking Points Memo, 4/16/08]

Philadelphia Inquirer blog – ‘Obama is again less certain, and rambles a bit.’ “Obama is again less certain, and rambles a bit when asked about the Washington D.C. gun ban. Gibson asks him to deny that he has ever advocated a complete ban on hand guns in 1996. Obama says no. But whatever the truth, no other answer is possible.” [Philadelphia Inquirer Blog, 4/16/08]

NBC News’ Matthew Berger – Obama ‘tried to have it both ways’ with Israel. “Obama’s answer on an Iranian attack on Israel tried to seem to have it both ways: highlight his support for Israel but not lock him into treating an attack on Israel like an attack on the U.S. But it may have looked more like a no because it wasn’t a firm yes. Clinton’s answer seemed more direct.” [NBC First Read, 4/16/08]

Youngsters were visiting the house, we were away for most of the debate, what was seen could not really be heard much.

What did I miss?

Comment by Uppity | 2008-04-16 22:07:34

You got to miss Obama dribbling and dodging.

Comment by JM | 2008-04-16 22:16:06

Hillary gave comprehensive answers while Barack fumbled at least 4 different times while his answers bordered on babbling. I was so pleased with this debate. The moderators were actually impartial and seemingly unbiased. Hillary answers flowed quickly while Barack’s anwers sputtered a few times. At times his answers were lengthy, but he didn’t say anything. That tells me that he didn’t have an answer or he didn’t know what he was talking about. Thanks ABC. I know that you are taking heat from thousands of angry emailers, but I know you did a good job. I appreciate it!

Comment by TeakWoodKite | 2008-04-16 23:09:42

Mostly the camera side shots of BO looking at Hillary with venonom, the “typical” remark with a twist, He revearse the flag but, has Hamas on his church website. I will call it “The Flag Pin Affair”

Like something out the BBC series “Spooks”.

The first line of the screenplay starts with.
“I was 8 years old when Ayers did those things.”
But when I got to Chicago I was told to look him up.”

Vetting standards. eh? “Obama made a funny”. Betty Boob, giggles.

Comment by TeakWoodKite | 2008-04-16 23:11:36

venonom, as apposed to venom, which is typo as deadly.

Comment by apishapa | 2008-04-17 13:23:57

I would love to know WHO told him to look Ayers up. Really. Whose advice did he follow when he made a conscious decision to form a long assiciation with this terrorist? I thought they just happened to be on the same board and just happened to work at the same university. But, Obama apparently sought Mr. Ayers out and cultivated that relationship. Why?

Comment by Fleaflicker | 2008-04-16 21:44:52

Because I live blogged this thing I mainly listened. But when I looked at the television I was amazed at how upset Obama looked. He seemed really taken aback that anyone would dare to actually ask him questions.

Hillary won this one. And she won it BIG!

Comment by Mel | 2008-04-16 21:48:33

Taken aback, Obama was pissed his ears were redder than the curtains behind him!

Obama never smiled after the first question forward tonight

Mr. Murder, you missed truth in media and in candiates being forced to be shown tonight, well moreso truth from Clinton and same old lies from Obama, it was like watching an 8 yr old against a 28 yr old and the immaturity showed through big time!

One polished and knowledgeable and direct on issues, one was a ton of ummmmmm’s and uhhhhh’s and dead air space!

Comment by Claude | 2008-04-16 22:07:59

Sorry to quote myself, but I published an article and stated something very apropos to Obama’s stunning defeat in tonight’s debate:

Regarding Obama’s naiveté…

“Its like he [Obama] is riding a tricycle in the Tour de France!” —Claude DiDomenica, 3-24-2008, “Doggies, Dummies and Dunderheads”

And I’ll add now:

And Hillary is riding a racing bike!

Comment by JM | 2008-04-16 22:20:03

For a boxing match analogy, Hillary was the attacker who threw a couple of good upper cuts that dazed Barack, while Barack was the dodger who danced around the ring. Although I can’t say Hillary knocked him out with a K/O, she beat him silly and won the match with a unanimous decision.
The new world champion… Hillary Clinton in 4 rounds!

Comment by Mary | 2008-04-16 22:32:06

But in the final statement, he was one of those boxers who hold on, but on the side away from the ref so he can’t see. Same old lines about pac money, lobbyists, special interests that are totally untrue. But he said it only when there was no possibility of rebuttal.

Comment by TeakWoodKite | 2008-04-16 23:21:37

He did actually look dizzy under the klieg lights. Obama was doing the saved by the bell routine. …

sen Obama (Apollo) is asking …”what happened?” What round is it?

sen.Clinton (Rocky) “Let me at him”.

When you take away the script, Obama can’t seem to speak. It indicates to me a shallowness of thought.

Comment by beebop | 2008-04-16 22:21:42

Not to prepare better is a fundamental laziness that is not inspiring in a presidential candidate. If he were a football team, he’d be guilty of looking beyond a wild card game to the super bowl. The questions asked were almost too good to be true. But for his staff not to prepare him better is sinful. For it not to occur to anyone in their wildest imagination that eventually he would have to answer some tough (or rather, any) questions shows a disregard for the process and his belief that rather than “earn” a nomination, he could merely game his way into it. Thank you ABC for a rare and awesome look at the weakness of the man.

Comment by lifelong dem leaving party | 2008-04-16 22:59:00

beebop, i missed the debate (nba was on and i figured i could check out what happened here, guess i have priority issues). but i’m not surprised about your observation of fundamental laziness. reminds me of an article i read somewhere about his time (brief though it was) in the senate. seems he found the actual work boring. if he gets the white house, i’m sure he won’t be interested in that work either, just the credit.

and in illinois he pretty much did nothing ’til he got someone to get his name on a bunch of other people’s bills the last year. whole career built on claiming credit for other people’s work.

the impression of laziness comes through loud and clear - he doesn’t really want to DO the job of president, just wants to GET the job and the perks. he doesn’t really want to have to study the issues and understand them for, like, debates and stuff, just wants to go there and agree with hillary’s positions but pretend he thought of them.

having recently retired from a long career where i encountered a lot of lazy credit stealing types (along with a lot of good people too), i recognize them quickly, as i’m sure all hillary supporters do. the obamakids, however, don’t have the experience to spot them.

i wondered the same thing. i honestly believe he didn’t think they would put a glove on him, hence he didn’t prepare.

Keith O will not allow Chuck Todd on his show, I wish the gotcha questions didn’t take so much time, but it was a part where Obama began looking weak. on another point, I was surprised at how aggressive HRC was about removing troops, & so quickly; would she hit any obstacles from rethuglican senators, like l. grahm & the texas senator warmongers.

The OFB bloggers all had to scramble because their post-debate scripts (that they wrote ahead of time) all said how super-duper-magnificent Obama was tonight. But they couldn’t use the scripts after Hillary beat the arugala out of Barry.

So they dialed Whine-1-1 for a waah-mbulance.

There is no doubt in my mind who the winner is and if this were a job interview, Hillary would win it, hands down. Olbermann and others are pissed at the moderators, at ABC and Hillary because they made their chosen one look awful. Boo Hoo! Olbermann did not complain when the media crucified Hillary. I remember Russert looked as if he was out for her blood in one of the debates. MSNBC was the worst. At least, this was equally brutal and balanced.

Now, the trick is to keep all this up front until all the primaries are over. We have got to congratulate Gibson and Stephanopoulus (?) and ask them to continue what they started and get this info out there.
I e-mailed Gibson and will hand write letters tomorrow to both of tonight’s moderators.

Tomorrow the “story” will be that Obama “won” the debate overwhelmingly in the phony-as-hell online poll, and the talking heads will have figured out a way to spin this into an Obama win. They can’t do it tonight because they just don’t think all that fast. Given a night to talk amongst themselves, they’ll come up with something though. Just watch.

Comment by ChrisXP | 2008-04-16 23:20:01

If that undecided live debate response graph was any indicator, I noticed the more Hillary was passionated about a topic, the higher her score (at times it even reached 100% — especially with education issues). When she hesistated, the score dipped.

It appears the audience prefers Hillary to hit the podium and be direct. They like her fighting.

Think voters don’t want another tiptoe-thru-the-tulip candidate, but one that can get knocked out, get back up, and deliver a roadhouse punch later.

The voters want blood!

Obama continued with his lies and deceit. He said he doesn’t take money from FEDERALLY REGISTERED lobbyists, but failed to mention that he does take money from all other lobbyists, lobbyist’s friends and families, and OIL lobbyists.

I find the deceit more insulting than the outright lies.

Actually I didn’t think that ABC started fair. And I didn’t care. If Obama and his fans have their knickers all in a twist because he was hit hard and low then welcome to Hillary’s world.

But when they hit her, she just gets better. She takes lemons and makes lemonade. He appears all bitter and upset. Can’t take a punch.

If Obama fans had cared when The Obama Network, formerly known as NBC and its cable cartoon network known as MSNBC, was completely unfair to Hillary Clinton I might be sympathetic. I might even be upset that the media is inserting itself into the process in a way I find frightening.

We need to have informative debates that focus on issues. Gotchas are simply not very important IMO.

I’ll be upset when Obama gets blindsided when Obamans are upset when the same happens to Senator Clinton. Until then, I am afraid I am not a good person and am wholeheartedly enjoying schadenfreude.

There is absolutely no reason to confuse the ABC yakkers, or any MSM yakkers, with journalists, they’re not.

What was different about this debate which was unfriendly to both Obama and Clinton is that she was able to handle it in splendid fashion and he was not.

We all knew that the media would come down like this on the nominee but they showed their hand early. Protecting Obama is a disservice to him.

Hillary has proved she has class, wit, intelligence and knowledge. She’s a real candidate who can win and win big!
