Obama’s Obscene Gesture Is a Top Story at Fox News

DID OBAMA GIVE A ‘FLIP’ RESPONSE TO CLINTON ATTACKS?

Just when you thought the Democratic race couldn’t get uglier, Barack Obama is being accused of giving Hillary Clinton the finger at a town hall meeting in North Carolina. …

Fox News’s Embed blog has more: “Clinton To Obama: Stop Whining About Debate.”

Here’s more from the Fox News story (click here to read the full story as well as to view Fox News’s image and its own video of the gesture):

[...]

Bloggers were quick to note that as the Illinois senator scolded his Democratic rival for her performance at the debate, he raised his right hand and scratched his cheek with one finger. That finger.

“This is one of those political moments that really needs few words,” wrote the Los Angeles Times in a blog. “He’ll no doubt deny it later, but that mischievous smile seems to confirm plenty. And the crowd sure sees something.”

Obama started his address in Raleigh, N.C., by complaining that the debate on ABC “set a new record because it took us 45 minutes before we even started talking about a single issue that matters to the American people.”

Then he lumped Clinton in with the ABC moderators, who he said were playing “gotcha games.”

“And I’d say Senator Clinton looked in her element,” he said. He paused. Then he raised his right hand and scratched his cheek with his middle finger. He smiled slightly, and the crowd cheered.

The cheers, of course, could have been for his verbal jab at Clinton.

Obama’s campaign denied the gesture was anything more than a harmless face scratch.

But some bloggers said otherwise.

“Talk about no class: Barack Obama gives Hillary the middle finger,” read one headline on Redstate.com.

“Obama gives Hillary the finger,” reads a post on YouTube.

“Obama fingers a ‘gotcha’ debate,” the Chicago Tribune’s Swamp blog slyly intimated.

Clinton herself has made no mention of the incident, other than to say Obama should stop whining.

In an interview with Fox 29 in Philadelphia, Clinton said of her Democratic opponent, “I know he spent all day yesterday complaining about the hard questions he was asked. Being asked tough questions in a debate is nothing like the pressures you face inside the White House.”

“I’ve been through, what, 23 of these debates?” she said. “As I recall, I was asked some pretty tough questions in nearly every one of them.”

OMG! HE DID! HE GAVE HER THE FINGER! HOW STUPID AND CHILDISH! JUST CONFIRMS MY FIRST ASSESSMENT OF OBAMA! NOT READY FOR PRIME TIME AND THIS PROVES IT!!!

How could anyone who watched the Debate not agree that Clinton should be our president? She was articulate, eloquent and a served up a wealth of information on all questions asked! She is the professional in this race! She will be a fantastic president! Let’s get behind and support a qualified candidate for a change!

As for Gibson, the man reminded us what a professional journalist is supposed to looks like.!

It’s worthwhile repeating here that this claim is demonstrably untrue…

Obama’s Wayward Finger

“If Obama did this on purpose, it’s a sign of incredible immaturity. If he did it by accident, it’s a sign of inexperience. If a president were to make an accidental gesture like that while talking about a foreign leader, for example, it could cause a global uproar.”

untrue? Oh really? Then explain his throwing other rap signs like the “dirt off my shoulder” sign. Come on, I wasn’t born yesterday, I know what the bird looks like, even a covert flip. The audience knew exactly what he was doing. He’s a big Jay Z fan and had the unmitigated gal to play 99 problems after NH! He is a sexist pig playing to his homies. How divisive and racist can you get? This behavior is conduct unbecoming of a candidate. He should drop OUT.

Comment by bwana | 2008-04-18 15:35:40

Oh, it’s even worse. In the clip posted here yesterday, 26 seconds in he brushes his cheek with the little finger of his right hand. I checked with a lot of people, and they all agreed this is clearly ’street lingo’ for ‘your husband has a tiny, crooked unit.’

Three minutes in, he brushes his cheek with the index finger of his left hand. Again, my street experts agree that’s code for ‘Still leading, baby. Still have more delegates than you.’

Honestly…

Comment by MIssDarla | 2008-04-18 13:04:34

He actually made the exact same gestures twice in front of two different crowds yesterday. Youtube it. One crowd is mostly women, the other mostly men. He flips her the bird in the exact same part of the speech. Coincidence? I think not.

Comment by SusanUnPC | 2008-04-18 13:11:21

You know, many people told me that last night — that there were two separate incidents.

But after searching and searching, we could not find two instances. We did find several different views of him speaking in Raleigh, N.C. yesterday — shot from different angles, so that it can look like he was speaking in front of different groups of people, but it was the same speech.

If you have a LINK to BOTH videos, please share. Thanks.

Comment by Mel | 2008-04-18 13:14:05

the camera angles make it appear as it is two different times, but it is one in the same from all the videos, unless Obama has a travelling cast of people he brings to his stumps, which wouldn’t suprise many people, after all those phoney fainting episodes a month ago!

Comment by Birgit | 2008-04-18 13:43:55

I had both videos running simultaneously last night, and it was the same audience, but different audience members were seen in the background because of the different angles of the video recordings. Both videos showed him the same… word for word the same, with the same gestures being made and the same audience responses.

Nonetheless, I do believe that he slyly gave President Hillary Clinton his middle finger. It is sad when a politician running for President cannot control himself. We all know what happened to Howard Dean with his childish scream!

I probably owe it to y’all, probably to be locked by the force
Tryin to hustle some things, that go with the Porsche
Feelin no remorse, feelin like my hand was forced
Middle finger to the law, nigga grippin ma balls
Stab the ladies they love me, from the bleachers they screamin
All the ballers is bouncin, they like the way I be leanin
All the rappers be hatin, off the track that I’m makin
But all the hustlers they love it just to see one of us make it
Came from the bottom the bottom, to the Top of the Pops

Like a running back, get it man, I’m straight off the block

Comment by simon, too | 2008-04-18 13:41:54

Maybe you should take a more modernist appraoch to the troll, you’re quickly becoming irrelevant.

Truly, Americans are known for progress, those who don’t change become obsolete.

No, Fox is exposing the truth about Obama, and gaining votes for McCain.

And it would have been up to the democrats to dump the little cretin, if they were serious about hte election, but they didn’t, and here we are.

The democratic elite hierarcy is full of stupid people.

Every day that goes by is one more day Clinton should be grateful she’s not associated with that mess.

Comment by StatBabe | 2008-04-18 13:54:31

So Fox News is now a Clinton supporter and a friend to Democrats?

I doubt that! But since the GOP and Fox News assumes that Obama will become the Democratic nominee, they are taking this opportunity to fire a shot at the presumptive Democratic nominee (at least, from their seats) for president.

Comment by bert | 2008-04-18 14:10:48

NO !!!!! No one with a brain thinks that. They just happen to see what an easy mark Obama is and will be in a General Election. And they just want some fun at his expense now. This story just gives them more ammunition for the fall.

And I have been thinking about this some. A good speaker and a good presenter always keep the audience in mind. And when you are in front of a group that large a seasoned presenter would be very careful with every single gesture or movement of their body so as not to give off any negative suggestion.

If he had an itch, why would he scratch it with THAT finger? That gesture is so known that anyone who even half started to scratch an itch like that would have pulled back. DO YOU REALLY WANT ME TO BELIEVE THAT HE IS THAT STUPID OR UNAWARE? That requires a total suspension of rational thought.

Comment by StatBabe | 2008-04-18 14:01:52

Amalia, I totally agree with you about this! I really have developed a distinct distaste for Obama, but this business of “flipping the bird” in the middle of a speech seems like a real reach.

There are so many things that Obama has done to irritate people who have not drunk the Kool-Aid that this whole thing really seems to me to be “over the top” grasping for things that the man has done wrong. In short, I’d rather stick to issues and Obama’s tainted background with respect to Rezko, Wright, and Ayers.

That’s a whole lot a scratching for someone standing in front of an audience that he hopes will take him seriously. It’s very street , very ghetto and mainly junkies do it.

This is a very stupid man with an identity problem. I think he thinks this makes him look ‘down’, cool. All it makes him look like is totally unqualified t do the job.

Why would any American send him out to the world to be our representative?

populations….
Mississippi….the okie doke comment

very odd and late night tv clownish

if I were African American I would find his

“if I were African American I would find his

But you’re not, and as even Sugar would point out - sometimes a lot of us spend our lives putting forward a different affectation depending on the situation. Versus the more relaxed tone and affectations we have when talking w/ people like us.

I speak slightly differently and use different mannerisms when I’m w/ friends than I do at work… same as I do when talking to strangers or making a presentation vs. talkin’ w/ the fam.

Call it what you will, but it’s a sad reality.

Believe me, I do. I have been trying to tell these dimwits that what he did opened him up to all sorts of speculation, including whether or not he’s using drugs. I don’t think he is, but geez, could he be more out of touch with AA people. He thought he was being cool with that shit yestereday. Comment by lifelong dem leaving party | 2008-04-19 00:55:59

seems to me that his thinking he’s acting “black” in front of aa’s by using the “bird” is insulting to aa’s, in addition to the target of his “bird.” seems like he’s saying aa’s don’t have the same values and manners as everyone else, so the “bird” is ok….

of course, he really doesn’t have a clue what it means to be aa. he’s just acting.

You guys probably fed them this “story”.

Comment by deke | 2008-04-18 13:52:04

Every news outlet round has the obama talking points on how the debate moderators where unfair to his royal highness. Axelrove is the king of media manipulation

Comment by cdo | 2008-04-18 13:57:04

1- no one thinks fox is any more or less objective than MSNBC.
2-many bloggers sent that video to many media outlets.
that is very often how a news company knows something is NEWS, ie people are talking about it.
3-Obama is a schmuck. I can cite evidence.

Comment by Beelzebud | 2008-04-18 17:00:34

Actually any media outlet with an ounce of integrity reports actual news, not what right-wing CIA sponsored bloggers send them.

Considering Fox is the only one out of the three cable networks to be fair in their type of coverage, why the hell not? Name one other media outlet that has trashed both candidates, and not tried to influence this race on the Democratic side?

The One will return dignity to the White House. As the Democratic nominee, he can flip off McCain. Once he becomes President, who can say who he will be flipping off? It is the change that we all are hoping for. The middle finger will become the American salute! Even now, we should begin calling it “giving an Obama.”

The headline says it all… and further highlights the absurdity of your obsession with a non-event. You can go back to previous interviews and in previous debates and see him do the same thing.

You’ve written 3 stories on this… what, none of the substantive things occuring on either side of the debate is worthy of comment? You can only attempt to fan this weak spark into a flame?

Pretty sad Susan… pretty sad.

Comment by Mel | 2008-04-18 14:13:06

Well to have any sort of dialog about the debates, Obama would of needed to answer something without the BS attached to it, which pretty much summed up his answers to everything, aside from his increasing payroll taxes and capital gains taxes!

Otherwise, he doesn’t like his judgement to be questioned, or his words, so what is left aside from his negative/not so positive stumping, his lies in his ads are all spoken about, so the character of the guy is what is left, since he is the one carrying out the gestures!

Comment by Kathy | 2008-04-18 14:14:45

I make a point - and rather than address that you choose to challenge me to provide you w/ something that I know I could never do… you wouldn’t accept it anyway.

Too funny.. I asked a question, yet I’m the one being arrogant - and please, what frickin’ debate???? There is no debate - only mindless praise support and worship of your chosen candidate - exactly the behaviour that’s constantly decried on other sites supporting your opposition.

Obama is such a phony. Everything is an act with him. He will get out of this situation with a silly little smile or a lie. He is like a little frat boy still in college trying to impress his audience whoever it may be.

He is no more ready to be president than I am. What an embarrassment to the United States to send him anywhere. I think he might have some psychological problems. When I see him performing at his rallies, there are times when he actually giggles like a little girl.

Of course I realize there are females who think he is hot but it is embarassing when you are expecting to see an intelligent, articulate, classy man who is running for the highest office in our country and you realize how immature he actually is upon further examination. A real let down.

Comment by Paul | 2008-04-18 14:22:34

I do not if Obama’s gesture was by mistake or not. Overall, the way he spoke and his behavior is childish. He is not fit to be our president. He is so defensive.

No one was on that stage with him. What does he do? Talk about his WONDERFUL ideas? No. Tear people down. So the next time you hear him start up with “Poor BOBO,” remember how he uses his rebuttal time. He’s a nasty little shit. Policy is his middle finger.

Comment by Sammie | 2008-04-18 14:29:57

We can all have our own opinions about whether or not that was the “bird,” but for someone who was whining about the trivial matters or distractions addressed in the debate, he certainly wasted a lot of time on unprofessional gestures and complaints (the knife twist, the shoe wipe, and the shoulder brush — I half expected him to morph into Rev. Wright).

Regardless of whether or not he gave her the finger, it certainly looked like he was having a passive aggressive temper tantrum (moms recognize these behaviors right away, we see this stuff happen when children become overwhelmed).

I will say agaian, when it come to a white person, or anyother than African American says or speak the truth about him and if any of the word sound uncomfortable, the word code is used by every African American journalist(most of them not all) and those that sings Obama’s song will tell you and explian to the best ability how codeded that gesture or that word is, even a common word used amongst friends. When President Clinton spoke the truth in SC, everyone of them that has an avenue to say something did so to condemned President Clinton.

Now the question is what are they saying now, where is there outrage?

All we asked is a balance and fare coverage. Or is that too much to ask?

Wake up Amarica!!!!!!

Comment by Uppity | 2008-04-18 15:49:09

Try not to worry about it Ugo. November won’t be codified. It’s one person, one vote, no savages allowed within a thousand feet. He won’t be president. Unfortunately we will have given up the opportunity for a better economy again and universal healthcare. But neither of these things would have occurred under Obama anyhow.

Comment by Uppity | 2008-04-18 15:52:24

Try not to worry Ugo. Obama will never be president. November is one vote, one person, no savages allowed within 100 yards. Unfortunately we will be giving up universal health care and a good economy again. But those things would have never happened under Obama anyhow. He is not a proponent of universal health care, which hardly even makes him a democrat. We shall just have to suffer through McCain for four stagnant years in order to get rid of Obama.

Comment by beebop | 2008-04-18 15:57:28

But then what?

Three times they will have gone down to defeat.

Twice with candidates that are so unappealing to Democrats that they can’t seal the deal.

If this was a marriage and they were the husbands, we’d all be virgins.

The party will be a MESS. Actually, there won’t be a Democratic party. There will be the remains of the Obama machine and the Little Red Hens of the formerly known as Democratic party.

Is Nader still running?

At this point Obama reminds me of the kid in class who was always sucking up to the teacher (read: media), who was always threatening other kids with his tough “friends”, and who was a verbal bully but could never stand up for himself when called out for his rotten behavior. And then went running to his mommy for being “picked on.”

Notice that when Hillary had a complaint during the debates (why do I always get the first question?) she did it then and there, confronting the problem and its perpetrators. Obama? He was too much of a coward to do it Wednesday night and waited to whine until he was surrounded by his fawning supporters. I’m sorry if my attitude is sexist, but I do not want a wimp in the White House. There is something effete and unattractively passive/timid about Obama. I’m not at all surprised by his wife’s overbearing manner–she is exactly the strong opposite these men always marry.

Well, no one can force you to vote in your interest. If you want the Supreme Court to become radicalized, abortion rights to float away, permanent war to become further engraved in our national fabric, more 1000’s of Americans soldiers to die, by all means, vote against your country.

vote against your country.

For me to do this I would half to vote FOR Obama.
Obama is an enemy of the Constitution.
Change is the way of the universe. It can not be forced.

I am living in a fascist dictatorship. Giving anyone like Obama the reins of power is a treasonous act. That is what I see.
Sen. Obama has been vetted and the verdict is in. Guilty, on all counts.

Treasonous act? What’s up with Teak you think?

I ask you then, what is the value of a vote? What does it mean to not to be able vote?

A singular personal act, guaranteed in the Constitution of this country.
Shall I cast it for an individual who seeks to deny others the same?
If I do, I am condoning denying the rights of others, an act that injures the Constitution and by definition is treason.
I will not be a party to this.

This is from PoliGazette. It’s apparently more than just giving Hillary the finger. From what this says, quite a few of his gestures are in code.

Did he have a predominately black audience?

POLIGAZETTE
“Watch the video, and longer ones; he didn’t just give Hillary the finger, he also ‘brushed the dirt’ of his shoulder (imitation of rappers) and, and this is insulting, he made the move that indicates that he takes the shit off his shoes (Clinton). So, he basically called Clinton ‘dirt,’ shit’ and gave her the finger.”

Comment by lifelong dem leaving party | 2008-04-18 20:53:15

i’ve been reading about this too. at first i just had the usual obama is disgusting reaction. but the more i thought about it the angrier i got. he is obviously disrespecting hillary. but he is also disrespecting the entire country. and the thought of someone with this gutter kind of behavior in the white house is just horrendous. it’s low class, ghetto, gutter, juvenile, “gangsta” crap that i would expect from a rapper but not a presidential candidate.

of course, he didn’t put on this act in pennsylvania. coward! he did it in north carolina, apparently thinking they would be receptive to ghetto crap. so he also insulted north carolinians.

the fact that the koolaid drinkers cheered doesn’t make it any less disgusting - just makes it more sad that the level of our society has declined so badly.

i realize my use of words like “gangsta” and ghetto will bring out cries of racism from obamabots. however, it is obama who is racist by trying to establish his “cred” with this sort of behavior. of course, he’s also trying to distract everyone from his pitifully embarrassing performance in the pennsylvania debate. seems to be working.

Actually…..You can be both elitist and terrorist, the two are not mutually exclusive….If you think about it an extreme snob who would say employ any measure to rid him self of those he finds objectionable could easily resort to terrorism. Osama Bin Laden for instance uses the guise of religion to justify attacking those he finds objectionable. He is an elitist willing to kill anyone, even other muslims who are not purists as he defines purity. It is a false argument….. Find another…
