THESE WORDS are what inspired Barack Obama? THESE WORDS are what “jumpstarted’ his “Christian journey”? THESE WORDS are what prompted Obama to name his book The Audacity of Hope? THESE homophobic words in the fourth sentence of Rev. Wright’s sermon?
“Have the audacity to hope for that child of yours,” Wright sang out in the sermon that Obama has said jumpstarted his own Christian journey.
“Have the audacity to hope for that husband of yours. Have the audacity to hope for that home of yours. Have the audacity to hope for the homosexual of yours. Have the audacity to hope for that church of yours. Whatever it is you’ve been praying for, keep on praying, and you may find, like my grandmother sings, There’s a bright side somewhere.”
I had never seen the full context of the phrase, “the audacity of hope,” until I happened to run across those paragraphs while reading an article at NPR. I was stunned. I was speechless. And with more sadness than sarcasm, I must say that I’m sure that all of our GLBT friends and relatives want us to have the “audacity to hope for the homosexual” of ours. Good lord.

PGN: I assume that you and President Clinton have gay friends. Can you give me your impression of one of those couples that you socialize with, without giving any names?
Hillary Clinton: Oh my gosh. There are so many of them. I know that Mark [Walsh, Clinton’s national director of LGBT outreach] is on the phone. Let me say this, we don’t get to socialize a lot. But when we do, it’s usually at a big event where we get to see people and spend time with them. This is something I want to do more of as soon as I finish this presidential campaign. And that states are really beginning seriously to deal with the whole range of options, including marriage, both under their own state constitutions and under the legislative approach.I anticipate that there will be a very concerted amount of effort in the next couple of years that will move this important issue forward and different states will take different approaches as they did with marriage over many years and you will see an evolution over time.
PGN: What will you do to improve the immigration policy for same-sex couples?
HC: I think that that’s one of the biggest problems that we’ve got to contend with. Even states that have civil unions, domestic partnerships or even marriage laws are running into roadblocks with the federal government when it comes to federal benefits and privileges. Of course, immigration is a federal responsibility and I am going to do everything I can to eliminate any disparities in any benefits or rights under our law at the federal level so that all people will have available to them every right as an American citizen that they should, and that would include immigration law.
PGN: What changes would you make toward governments that execute gay people, such as Iran, Egypt and Iraq and numerous other countries in the Middle East and Africa? Will you offer political asylum?
HC: I would be very strongly outspoken about this and it would be part of American foreign policy. There are a number of gross human-rights abuses that countries engage in with whom we have relations and we have to be really vigilant and outspoken in our total repudiation of those kinds of actions and do everything we can, including using our leverage on matters such as aid, to change the behavior so we can try to prevent such atrocities from happening. … Read all.

As far as we know, Clinton only met Rev. Wright that one time, and it was at a gathering of many ministers. To consider it equivalent to Obama’s close relationship with the Rev. is ludicrous.

Sorry but the preacher who counseled Bill was actually Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr. By the way, not long after he was offering Bill Clinton spiritual counseling, it came to light that the dear old Rev. Jackson had a “baby mama”. She had worked for his coalition and he used $250,000 to pay her off for all intents and purposes. He has an illegitimate daughter who is now in her very early teens. This may also explain why the dear old Rev. Jackson’s wife, unlike Rev Jackson and his namesake son Jesse Jackson Jr., is a very strong Hillary Clinton supporter.

I didn’t quite think Rev wright was slurring homsexuals in that statement. I thought Wright had a big aids thing going on in his church. Not to excuse Obama from his stands….especially the tour with that reformed gay preacher, Donnie McClurkin, he went around with.
I doubt he cares about AIDS and gay people. AIDS and the black community … well, yes in his way. Not enough to do anything other than spread lies about it.
Please don’t go there. I’ve worked as a volunteer HIV counselor for nonprofit support networks a number of years. It is a fact that the AIDS epidemic hit the Chicago black community particularly hard. Rev. Wright undoubtedly presided over the funerals of many victims, and counseled their survivors.
Suffice to say that the good pastor offered up in anger some questionable and outlandish statements. Let’s not compound the ill will by retorting in a mean-spirited and equally foolish manner that otherwise good and decent people inevitably come to regret. Remember, until you’ve walked a mile in their shoes …
I think it would be a far better use of our time to ask Sen. Obama what if anything did he proposed specifically, in his capacity as chair of the Illinois state senate’s health committee in 2003-04, to direct sorely-needed resources toward dealing with this HIV / AIDS crisis in his own community. Of course, that question could well prove to be rhetorical.
Point taken, and I am duly admonished. But I just can’t see how spreading those foul lies would have done any good for anyone. What other lies has he spread? Has he counseled safe sex? Safe sex for gay men and lesbians as well, in his community? Told people the ways they can and can’t get HIV? One lie falsely spread can undo the good of twenty truths when it comes to a virus like this — all it takes of one mistake.
I just don’t know if he really understands or feels remorse at this, or if he wants to do constructive things to help. PLENTY of priests have duly and ponderously stood over the bodies of people in their flock who died, intoned all the words, and felt nothing.
I just can’t make assumptions about him. I would need to know absolutely and without any ambiguity where he stood and stands on this before I’m going to cut him ANY slack.

I had the same impression that he was basically saying have the audacity to hope for the welfare of a homosexual about whom you care and are concerned. That is rather open to interpretation—hope that they will be ok or, as I think it was interpreted here, hope that they may be “cured”. While the Rev. probably meant the latter, this passage is not damning like his KKKAmerica or god damn America etc. I do not like Obama; I think he is worse than G. W. Bush but I also like to try not to say or do some of the things both Bush and Obama do that cause me to dislike them intensely. So I do not want to read a lot of meaning in between lines.
Jangles….I think perusing some of the excellent Gay Press out there could open your eyes a little….Loved the recent Blank Front page in the Philly press because THE LIL’ PRINCE would’t give them any interviews. It was CLASSIC…On one side OBAMESSIAH’S photo and then Blank. On the other side HRC’S photo and an extensive interiew. There’s also the fact that in some poorer areas in the city, people have a higher incidence of dying from gunshot wounds there than in Iraq. It’s really easy to take a “what the fuck” attitude in an environment like that. In that case, ending poverty (which Hillary has considered important enough to make a cabinet position to deal with) is a huge part of ending the AIDS epidemic in the poorer (urban and rural both) communities.

Uppity, I live in a predominantly gay community and have unfortunately witnessed gay bashing. I’m so inspired by the lesbian and gay community for being so brave and courageous to live openly out. The other day, I saw a handsome gay man in a convertible with the top down and a Hillary sticker on his bumper. I was so proud and happy. As a woman, I don’t have the courage to wear my Hillary gear or put a sticker on my bumper in public, for fear of what the Obamazoids might do to me. But that doesn’t stop me from voting for her, campaigning for her or donating to her campaign. I will feel more secure with her as my President, and I agree with you that the gay community doesn’t make their decisions lightly either.

This blog post needs to be widely disseminated to GLBT groups and blogs.
I did some activism for GLBT youth in the mid-1990’s after I found out the maltreatment of GLBT people, especially youth was contributing to their low self-esteem. This low self-esteem made them more likely to engage in unsafe sex (contributing to HIV and other STD spreading), suicide, homelessness and prostitution for survival since their own families would many times ostracize them and throw them out, being harassed at school, violence and abuse, etc.
I had co-produced a video program for pre-teens on HIV/AIDS and during my research found out about the plight of GLBT youth. I wanted to produce a video for this group on self-esteem and suicide prevention, but never could raise the money. But I did try and help here and there in other ways.
So I am very sensitive to this issue and applaud folks on this blog for their concern!

Of course there are snobs like Aravosis, Sullivan, and certain members of the wealthy, gay white male elite that are for Obama (with regret, I include Rachael Maddow in this group too). But the rest of us know a homophobe when we see one. Hillary is hugely popular with gays and lesbians. Obama comes from a tradition via his mentoring of “divide and conquer” for ego and profit. Sadly this includes many groups of people.
I doubt in his heart Obama is much different than his mentors. And that scares the living crap out of me. I’ve had some mentors that after a while revealed a side I just couldn’t agree with and I left them. Obama does not have good judgment, plain and simple, to stay with these bad mentors and spiritual advisers for all these years.
Mentors — this is the KEY to understanding who Obama is.
Some individuals learn from their mentors and go on and become something much greater than their mentors. Obama can be only as good as his mentor — he isn’t able to transcend his mentors teaching or examples.
Obama picked specific mentors — and this also tells us a lot about what sort of leader Obama will be. Right now I really don’t see much leadership at all from Obama.

And you know when I called the DNC offices on Friday evening, I spoke with a nice young man named Clayton and specifically informed him that if I, as a 37 year old lesbian, with a masters degree in International Relations, and who lives inside the Beltway is under no circumstances going to vote for Obama, even though I have voted and been registered as a Democrat since 1988, they have a very serious problem on their hands. I went on to say that if the party leadership thinks that I am going to set aside my anger and disappointment this time, as I have done in the past, and hold hands and sing Kumbaya they are sorely mistaken.
I explained to Clayton that if I want to be successful at something, I get my advice from successful people; from winners. I do not seek out advice from losers. I told him that Donna Brazile has about as much of a chance of leading a Democratic candidate to victory as I have of waking up tomorrow and morphing into a leading heart surgeon. I went into a very long, respectful diatribe about the abysmal state of this party and that I have every intention of registering as an independent. I informed him that I did not leave my party, but rather my party left me.
I too spoke to Clayton Friday, and specifically asked how the DNC thinks women as a block will do some sort of pavlovian SCOTUS vote for Obama (if he steals the nom by blocking FL and MI), when he keeps talking about how pro choice people do not understand the wrenching moral questions faced by pro lifers. He laughed and agreed..
I just told him that if we can sit tight through eight years of a man who appointed a veterinarian as an advisor for women’s health issues, we can sit tight through four years of John McCranky if, by doing so, we can give the Democratic Party a thrashing it’ll never forget. I think it’s particularly strange, since his church was apparently involved in ministering to AIDS victims. My own guess is that at some point he could easily have been taken for gay and for some reason it traumatized him. To women like myself he is not sexually attractive because he seems somewhat….ah, delicate. And sexless. I’m a feminist who very much likes men (was raised with three brothers and have two sons) yet I find Obama singularly unappealing.

have often had the same thought. he certainly has no appeal that i can see.
he tries so very hard not to have pictures taken, etc. - actions of someone trying a little too hard to avoid being associated with those he finds unacceptable. could that be because of repressed feelings? don’t personally care, but difficult accepting oneself can lead to issues and this guy clearly has enough issues already, what with hating women, jews, italians, white people, americans, and … who have i left out?

In my experience, most people men who surround themselves with anti-gay types are closeted themselves and deeply ashamed or it or in denial. My parents had a neighbor who, for my whole young life, quoted gay-changing Christian rhetoric, made sure to hunt and do all kinds of manly things, complained about “fruits” and “fags” being bad influences on society. So where is this going? At age 70 he got busted for attempting to solicit an underage boy online.
I know several men who came out in their late thirties and forties who told me that in their youth, they picked fights with gay men in bars and harassed them. THese men also spent a lot of time flirting with women and having a lot of hetero one-night stands to prove that they weren’t gay.
I know I can be paranoid, but I’ve always thought Obama was one of those guys on the downlow. Several gay friends have said the same thing. That’s why I’m so interested in the Larry Sinclair allegations. WHy isn’t the media reporting this at all unless it might actually be TRUE? Nobody on the left wants to touch this at this point.
I’ve also wondered why there are NO former girlfriends of Obama anywhere. IT’s like his past is completely devoid of them until MIchelle. That makes no sense because he has always been such a charmer and charmers usually have relationships so WHERE ARE THEY?

There is a study published by the University of Pennsylvania, published in The Journal of Community Psychology that talks about the resistance of the black churches to help with AIDS education that is sorely needed in the community since it is ravaging the inner cities, especially women because of their perception that its just a gay disease. This is what infuriated me when early in Obama’s campaign, he did a “Gospel Tour” throughout many black churches with anti-gay zealots in tow. Then he brags in the last debate about being the only Dem candidate to reach out to the churches. Tell me again just what he organized in Chicago?
