In his first wide-ranging interview since video clips of his inflammatory sermons were aired, the Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr. defended himself over the controversy, saying that his words were twisted. [NO QUARTER READERS: The full interview will air Friday night on PBS's Bill Moyers Journal; Rev. Wright will also speak at a National Press Club breakfast Monday at 8:30 a.m.]“I felt it was unfair,” Mr. Wright said, according to excerpts of the interview released Thursday. “I felt it was unjust. I felt it was untrue. I felt for those who were doing that, were doing it for some very devious reasons.”
In Mr. Wright’s sermons, he suggested that Americans bore some responsibility for the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, saying “America’s chickens are coming home to roost.” He also
blamed the government for the spread of AIDS among African-Americans, characterized the United States government as corrupt and referred to the “U.S. of K.K.K. A.”He did not apologize or back away from his remarks in the interview, instead saying that people wanted to paint him as “some sort of fanatic.”

Gee, Reverend Wright, we are sorry we stupid people got it all wrong and were a little bit put out. Let’s take another look so that we might get it right. Do you think it was because of all the emails he received before the last debate? I think it was. “Before the Democratic National Committee and its officers are embarrassed beyond all measure (any further), you need to seat the Florida and Michigan delegates. A careful reading of the rules shows that this is perfectly within the DNC guidelines, and you do or should know that. If you do not seat the delegates, the eventual Democratic nominee will be seen as illegitimate. The only reason to not seat the delegates is if you don’t care if there’s a Democratic in the White House. It is your job to try and get the most qualified Dem elected, and so far you’re not doing that.
“Please stop biding your time and waiting around for no apparent reason other than to get Obama elected, and seat the delegates. Florida and Michigan voters deserve to be counted. Anything else is un-American and un-Democratic.”
The Fox News anchors keep asking WHY Rev. Wright would be getting more publicity now, and why he isn’t lying low.
It seems obvious to me why: Barry is having him appear in highly protective arenas — like the lofty Bill Moyers Journal and the National Press Club — where the questions will be lovingly polite and piety will rule.
Rev. Wright is being sanitized in order to protect Barry from those nasty 527 ads in North Carolina.

It isn’t working. Chris Matthews, Margaret Carlson and Tucker were all over it this evening and they were slamming Obama. They also praised Hillary’s gumption in Pa. I thought I was hallucinating at first. The clips from the Moyers show were not helping Barack at all.
It’s about time people woke up to this. I think the NC Republican ad featuring Wright has also made it crystal clear. Why these fools could not have predicted this, I do not understand, but they are all over it now.

I happen to think this has the makings of a rather fascinating discussion. Moyers is a gentleman, in that he will allow Pastor Wright to answer questions fully without interruption by the host, but neither will he back down from asking hard questions of the retired minister.

No, but if you chop off the last half of what he is saying you understand where he’s coming from. The problem with this kind of selective quotation is this is how Republicans operate, not Democrats. Democrats should act more responsibly.
Republicans can repeat all the “Goddamn America” crap they want; Wright said Goddamn America for how it treats it’s minorities. If you look at the judicial system, he’s 100% correct. Republicans are also too obsessed by guns and the Second Amendment, they forget the First one.
Since a sentence with more than four words confuses a typical Republican voter, they drop the last half of his statements. The only critique I want to hear from Democrats is how Wright views AIDS as a insidious government plot. At first, I thought maybe he was referring to the inaction by Western governments which would be 100% accurate. Western indifference, and in the case of Bush’s Penecostal views about condoms, has allowed HIV problems to explode worldwide. Well, his views on AIDS are not controversial like his other statements, they’re simply incorrect and dangerous.
To me, those comments about AIDS as a government plot to kill black people is infinitely more insulting than his “Goddaman America” comments.
No one cares what you want to hear from Democrats. “God Damn America” stands alone. He is not saying, “Please, God, show America the error of her ways.” He is not saying, “Please help these poor people who were mistreated. He is anti-American, so he says “God Damn America.”
To someone who loves America, that indicates that “Reverend” Wright does not share that love. Those that love her want her to be the best she can be, not to be damned.

Wright made these comments in conjunction with 9.11. (A poster on Taylor’s site made this observation).

I have attended High Holy Day services within days of Jewish settlers being attacked and the Rabbi called upon God for peace and understanding. Walking through the parking lot to our cars, it was not difficult to imagine the terror of the innocents. We live in a country that until 9/11 has never known terror. To invoke God’s damnation upon us is an abomination for which I have no forgiveness in me.

Why are we, the Democrats, obsessed about Wright? While I agree Hillary is far and away superior to Obama, Obama is far and away superior to McCain.
Wright is one of Obama’s many gifts to the GOP. That’s a no brainer. The Democrats cannot be ridiculed as the GOP then says the Democrats as a whole are obsessed with Wright.

In a democracy, the actions of the government are defacto endorsed by those that elected it, so if government actions against outsiders becomes inspiration for attacks on the US, one cannot claim pure victimhood. The populations in Western nations have a distinct advantage that we have actual control of our destinies if we choose so. When Arabs get bombed from the skies by Western bombers or brutally crushed by US-armed military police in places like Egypt, they are victims. When US citizen are bombed from the sky by Arabs, Americans are not. It’s a brutal truth that people need to acknowledge. I’ll start with my first cliche by paraphrasing Sun Tzu: know your enemy. The problem is many in the US don’t want to. They wish to remain ignorant because they fear that it would mean an end to myths they maintain about themselves.
Try to never mistake rage for disappointment when the realization that one of your most cherished myths is shown to be untrue. What these hijackers demonstrated was that for all our technical savvy, they used cheap box cutters. I have an engineering degree and I could have never, ever imagined that. I don’t want to prove Godwin’s Law, but it’s like the Holocaust. It’s not like Westerners gave two shits about Jews being massacred and we’ve had almost a half dozen genocides around the planet since 1945 to show that we really don’t care about others being butchered. The Holocaust was different because in the lead up to the war, science and technology was thought of as universally good. So, the antipathy to the Nazis wasn’t about the body count, but by the manner by which they betrayed the total benevolence of technology.
We have not in any fashion whatsoever even addressed responsibility for our foreign escapades; on the contrary, we’ve allowed them to be compounded with the occupation of Iraq and threats of attacking Iran and Pakistan. We simply allow ourselves to be absorbed by trivialities in place of issues of national importance. We have allowed certain individuals to use the power of the people for their own self interest, usually by imposing misery on people abroad. Americans were blissfully ignorant on just how their $1.00 a gallon gas would actually cost us all in the end. In a shrinking world, blowback becomes much easier. So, one has to look no further than their own reflection in a mirror to find someone to blame.
So, the idea that those that died in the towers and the Pentagon were as innocent as newborns is to embrace self-delusion about ourselves and totaly deny of our past actions that have fostered resentment over many decades. The US wasn’t “attacked” on 911. It was classic payback and didn’t come out of the blue at all and virtually all the attackers can from US-sponsored client states like Egypt and Saudi Arabia. It is noteworthy that this fact is routinely downplayed. The media failed and the people have not held the media nor those in government to account for their crimes makes the situation worse.
Where am I going with all this? Hillary is realpolitik. She may not be an ideal candidate and I have many problems with her policies but she can at least assuage fears in people by coherently explaining her position. I personally feel she is better than her husband, whom I never really had strong feelings for.
However, I truly fear Obama. In so many ways, Obama encourages mindless groupthink, like blaming groups that dare not march in total lockstep with their drumbeats. They denigrate all others as flawed and inferior even when questions are genuine. Obama drives his agenda through overarching jingoistic constructs which will not further understanding and help start America in it’s return to being a global citizen. On the contrary, I actually expect Obama to further the idea of “American exceptionalism.”

What does this tell us about Wrong’s integrity, honor, decency, friendship, values, personal virtues ad infinitum?
Why did Obama put such faith in the man’s teachings and spiritual guidance? Doesn’t this say that Obama has problems with judgment? Isn’t it absolutely essential for our safety that we have a president who possesses a great deal of superior judgment on all matters relating to our security?
