Olbermann Wants Hillary Taken Down NOW, and Forcibly

Media critic Rachel Sklar writes today about a discussion between Keith Olbermann, on his MSNBC Countdown show Wednesday night, and his compliant minion Howard Fineman of Newsweek:

Fineman said that, all the delegate math aside, ultimately it was going to take “some adults somewhere in the Democratic party to step in and stop this thing, like a referee in a fight that could go on for thirty rounds. Those are the super, super, super delegates who are going to have to decide this.”

Said Olbermann: “Right. Somebody who can take her into a room and only he comes out.” [...]

[SUSAN's NOTE: Take notice of his use of the pronoun "he".]

What does that mean? Really, it can only mean one thing: Beating the crap out of Hillary Clinton, to the point where she is physically incapable of of getting up and walking out. At minimum. We know this. We know this because we have all seen movies where people are invited into private places to have “discussions” and the unruly party is, um, dealt with accordingly. It’s an unmistakably violent image.

Do I really think Olbermann thinks Hillary Clinton should really be violently beaten to the point of physical incapacitation, or worse? No, though some have taken that statement to its logical conclusion. But it is an unmistakably violent image

FURTHER NOTE the subtitle running as the two MEN talk about how to dispose of Hillary Clinton: “Campaign & Suffering“:

The full transcript is here.

Here is more insight from Ms. Sklar — and she links to Melissa of Shakesville, a guest blogger here at No Quarter who is tracking the sexism directed against Hillary Clinton —
Hillary Sexism Watch: Part Eighty-Three
[Shakespeare's Sister]:

To my mind, this is much worse than Pimp-Gate, which entailed an off-color implication resulting from David Shuster’s misguided attempt to sound cool, and even worse than Chris Matthews saying that Clinton had gotten where she was because her husband had “messed around.” If David Shuster can be suspended for likening Chelsea Clinton to a prostitute, then what happens when Keith Olbermann implies that the only way to stop Hillary Clinton is to inflict some sort of physical harm on her? Like I said above, I don’t think that Olbermann meant it literally, but that’s not the point. Words matter, and so do the images they evoke. This can’t be ignored.

Update: And it wasn’t — an MSNBC spokesperson sent over an apology from Olbermann, which I have reprinted in full:

It is a metaphor. I apologize: the generic “he” gender could imply something untoward. It should’ve been “only the other comes out - from a political point of view.” You could’ve called for reaction first if your main motive had merely been criticism.

It is true, I did not contact MSNBC for comment - I was reacting specifically to the on-air commentary by their top-rated anchor, as seen by me and about 950,000 other people. To be fair, Olbermann regularly does the same in his “Worst Persons” segment, which often calls out on-air personalities for their remarks. I do, however, appreciate the alacrity of Olbermann’s and MSNBC’s response.

Keith, what are we talking about here exactly?

Keith Olbermann should be fired or at the very least suspended from MSNBC for those comments. They are completely out of bounds.
How does he dare to say something like that; and on TV ??? Has everyone go completely nuts? What’s next?

I agree..I receive email alerts from NOW and have not once seen any call to action against this sexist and chauvinistic behavior. I’m extremely disappointed in NOW’s unwillingness to stand up against this atrocious behavior. What MSNBC is doing is disgraceful and down right disgusting. KO, Shusters, Matthews and Russert should be FIRED just like IMUS. Every single one of them are pigs.

Comment by ginamc | 2008-04-25 18:07:19

Here’s one just as nuts — a few days ago on Morning Joe, Mike Baracle was asked how can BO close the deal? His response: “…Barack is too nice, he’s been playing too nice for the sake of the college kids, you know, Kumbaya and all of that. The thing that Barack has to do is to knock HER out — throw her a big punch, and knock her out…”

You know, I was dumbfounded, disgusted and really upset for days now — everyone’s response, including Andrea Mitchell’s was to just laugh. hahahahaha. If people are going to call for Olberman to be fired, please include Mike Barnacle on the list. Actually, aside from Joe Scarborough, today that is, ALL OF MSNBC needs to go. There is a cultural of misogyny that is pervasive there, and quite honestly, it is perverse.

Comment by ginamc | 2008-04-25 18:11:13

I truly believe that this violent, misogynistic culture is not only condoned, it is promoted by ALL in charge at MSNBC. Recently, Brian Williams and Tom Brokaw have been in discussions that are completely outrageous and blatantly disparaging of Hillary.

Comment by Brigitte N. | 2008-04-25 13:36:55

I have long stopped watching Countdown and Hardball and some of the other Hillary-hating programs. The idea of telling Hillary Clinton to drop out of the close race is so preposterous that it doesn’t deserve to be taken serious. Why in heaven would anyone in his/her right mind entertain such an idea–except for those in the media who have promoted Barack Obama and vilified Hillary Clinton for a long time. As far as I am concerned, the Denver convention is a good place to decide the nomination.

I can’t tell If you were directing that at me, due to the absolutely horrible web design of this site. I’ll assume you were though, so here goes. Someone(on a much better designed site-by the way, NOT an ‘Obama site’) said this, and I think it might really help you out, if only you were open to REAL discussion, instead of this strange fantasy of I’m right you wrong me no listen type world you are functioning(somehow)in:
The actions of Barack Obama and his Campaign Team is further proof of how well they have run their campaign and are now able to put The Democratic Party first.

Unlike Hillary who is still running up Debts in every State she visits in her desperate struggle to hang on in the race. Add to this the most negative campaign Hillary has run, lies or embellishment of The Truth, the nasty personal smears and attacks against Barack Obama. Now politicians across the world including the British Foreign Minister are most concerned about her ill choice statement against Iran, is this a serious commander in chief.

It is time for the voters of Indiana and North Carolina to send out a clear message, no longer can we allow Hillary to try and fool us, just for her own selfish personal greed and vanity, she has no clue about the real struggle voters have, losing their homes, debts and we worry about them, unlike Hillary, health care costs and jobs.

From an e-mail / the sender shall remain anonymous for obvious reasons:

As a woman that has experience extreme violence from a man… I’m honestly outraged by this, and the statement says to me, that Keith Olbermann is calling for Hillary to be either assassinated, raped or assaulted in someway, and can’t believe MSNBC has not done anything to reprimand Mr. Olbermann. Once more example of how it is acceptable to promote violence against women.

I have sent a letter to the Editor asking for the removal of Olbermann… I urge you to do the same, since it seems like they are planning on brushing this under the carpet.

Susan–yes, of course, we ALL must speak out. I have counseled women of abuse, and this mistreatment of Hillary is classic symptoms of abuse. As a woman, every time that I hear this crap, I can’t help but feel personally assaulted and violated. Seriously, this seems like a Media Gang Rape. It is that violent. What is more pathetic is that WOMEN, female journalists, i.e., Mika, Andrea Mitchell, Norah, Gloria Borger… the list goes on and on, once upon a time were professionals. Now, they seem like mere Handmaidens for these sexist pig abusers. This is so surreal. My 12 y.o. and 14 y.o. nieces see it because it so obvious. Explaining this to them has been difficult.

Please remember everyone: MSNBC, CNN, etc. are all stations that we pay for either through cable, satellite, etc. We ALL deserve much better than this. Certainly, we are NOT getting our money’s worth. I can block MSNBC, but I wish there were a way that I could call my cable company and have it removed from my package.

I can’t remember who the guest was, because he always has the same old “yes men”, they’re pretty much interchangable.
I saw him on Letterman later that night. David told him he was an “enormous man”. He has to be, the ego just wouldn’t fit in anything smaller!

I never thought of that, but I have been wondering a lot about his total personality change. The best I could come up with is he was taken over by aliens (not the Lou Dobbs kind, but, you know, the real ones), and had a chip implanted, but no, it’s just Viagra.

As a victim of a violent assault many years ago, I just despise these men who encourage violence against women. And as for comments by our new resident troll, I don’t know where his statistic came from. ((Out of his butt maybe?) One really disturbing statistic is the greatest cause of death for pregnant women in this country is murder by their child’s father. This is why the police immediately view the significant other as the number one suspect when a pregnant woman is murdered.

This is beyond the pale. It is astonishing that a TV personality like Keith Olberman would make such a provocative statement about Hillary Clinton…that somebody should take her into a back room and ONLY HE comes out. That is implied violence and beyond disrespectful. It is comparable to a lynching statement made in reference to an African American.

MSNBC is publically peopled by individuals who are coarse and sexist. I refer to Chris Matthews, David Schuster, and Pat Buchanan — topped only by Keith Olberman. I wonder at the heart of it, whether it is women who are feared, or whether at the heart of it is fear of the suspected agenda of Mrs. Clinton as President vis-a-vis basic corporate interests. Perhaps there is a convenient nexus there that is being exploited.

Keith Olberman should be publically sanctioned and be made to PUBLICALLY apologize for the intention of his remark as well as for its substance.

Were this allowed to stand unmentioned, I would wonder which society was really more civilized — those in the Middle East who blatantly suppress women, or the USA where implied suppression is the daily offering.

BTW, using profanity and expletives does not help anyone make their case here. It is demeaning for all of us to have to read it.

Most of the time here on NQ it’s an interesting place to read the blog posts, and discuss it. Sometime we get frustrated with the drive-by trolldom and engage in some snark for sport (though, now that Obama is tanking, the “sometimes” becomes too often.) So yeah.. just because someone supports Hillary, doesn’t mean we all agree with what they’re writing…

Just as you don’t agree with the Obama fans who have been threatening violence in Denver. Right?

Making others accountable for Sonia is rather stupid. I’m no more accountable for Sonia’s words than those of trollster Whiteyflesh. I’m no more responsible for Whiteyflesh than I am Susan or Larry J.

You judge me for my stupid incipid comments and bad spelling and leave others to themselves.

Definitely the corporate agenda is foremost, IMO.
Look at who does about 80 or 90% of the commercials. Pharmaceuticals. Insurance companies.

Who is the one pushing for universal health insurance at lower rates that covers everyone? Who spent years fighting them, both in the Nineties and over Medicare prescription drug coverage that made them millions and screwed seniors? Who gave GE a hard time over PCBs in the Hudson and ordered them to clean it up? (That would be Bill). Which they still have not but probably would have to under Hill.

Miscogny and sexism are big, too, but the campaign to destroy Hillary comes from the top. They are very very afraid of her. Which is how I knew she was the better candidate, one who would actually “change” things.

Republican “Bitter” ad in NC

Looks like republicans are testing these ads for GE if Obama is nominee. I guess we will find out how it plays out in couple of weeks.

Hmmm. Yes violence against women. And the trolls here who do vile-ence against both women and men.
No wonder Obama doesn’t have the class to say anything about ogreman’s disgusting behavior. Obama keeps goose-stepping along, his minions following.
Ogreman should be fired. No suspension. Fired.
I know he’s as immature as, well, an Obamabrat- oh, well, of course he is an Obamabrat, but he is a grown up, I mean old man. No excuses. Fifth graders know to behave better than that. The only people who don’t know how to behave better than that are Obama-shit-heads.
Hang tough everybody. You didn’t really expect the trolls to show any class, did you?
As for ogreman, call for him to be fired. Don’t look to NOW or the Womens Media Center or the Feminist Majority to do anything about it. When I was checking out their sites last night they were silent. Disgustingly silent on the issue. What has happened is that these punk-taboid “journalists” have egged each other on to more and more disgusting, inappropriate behavior. In this they are just like any other Obama follower. For some reason the kool-aid has destroyed anything human in them. They really do have no decency left –and I think a fair amount of them never had any to begin with.

Olbermann’s tone is threatening. The way he is calm one day and rants the next, he may very well be mentally ill. I think he needs help.
Let’s say he’s not ill, that he’s just a creep with an attitude problem.
In today’s work environment, his attitude would not be tolerated and he would have had his butt booted a long time ago.
How is it then, that we put up with it from a media talking head?
He needs to get fired.

Olberman is pathetic. He tried to take Hillary on on Wednesday night. Result? He got his clock cleaned. He tried to argue that Hillary was finished. Result? She has won every big state in the US.

So what does he do? He wants some guy (he did say “he”) to bully Hillary our of the race. Result? The American people will continue to make a fool of him by voting Hillary into the nomination.

Olberman is on self-destruct.

I hope your joking. TX think again, he will have to win the people of TX to get its electoral votes (not profit from some anti-democratic semi-caucus).

IL? That’s his own state.

NC? That is McCain country.

CA, NJ, VA and NY? Keep dreaming.

Comment by TeakwoodKite | 2008-04-25 16:57:20

BO will not win California or NY or MAss. Or Connecticut. Or ANY of the states like Wyoming, Utah,, Florida, Illinios….

He did not win the people of Texas–he may get it because of it’s semi caucus system. That won’t help him in the general.

Illinois? That’s a joke, it’s his state.

SC also a joke–that’s McCain country.

Comment by flyarm | 2008-04-25 16:44:13

whiteyfesh..

he would not nessesarily win NJ or Ca ..Texas is awful quite since Hillary people were locked out of caucus’s..and almsot all media still puts Hillary in the win column for Texas..if he had really won Texas would he not object to Hillary calling texas her win?

there is much we still don’t know about all the crap that team Obama pulled in the Texas caucus’s!

and right now McCain and Obama are pretty close in Ca ..and NJ may very well go McCain’

and i can tell you i am here in Fla..and no way will Obama win Fla after the stunt Obama and Dean and Brazile pulled here…no way..lifelong dems and working dems i know ( and i know many ) are so angry they will throw their vote to Mccain or stay home.

so go ahead try to win the GE with Wyomings 3 electoral votes..you weon’t get Florida’s 27 or Michigans!..and you won’t get Pa and You won’t get Ohio..

and Texas will prob go Repub..as well as that big win of Obama’s in Wyoming..pssssssssss…don’t count on those 3 electoral votes.
and good luck with Iowa!! the bus kids won’t be able to come in and flood a caucus..they would have to vote and be checked off the rolls.

Fly..a 2004 elected delegate for the State Of Florida..and a once proud member of the Dem Executive Comittee , Florida.

You could morph Megatron with the Terminator and Hillary would still be the one to come out of that room.

As if any of these guys in the DNC had the nads to go into that room with Hillary Clinton. Obama’s the best of the bunch, and he’s crying ‘no mas, no mas’ on the debates.

They’d have to draw straws. “You go in there!” “I ain’t going in there. You go in there.” “Why don’t we send Kennedy in?” “I ain’t going in that room with that woman, are you fucking crazy?”

Comment by Jeff | 2008-04-25 15:48:44

It’s obvious what Keith meant:

Any private conversation Hillary had with another person, that ended with that person leaving the room, and Hillary staying alone in it, means that they convinced her to drop out of the race, and she is staying in the room crying over the fact that her lifelong dream is over.

I await the deluge…

Comment by zozosmom | 2008-04-25 15:53:57

Why do Obamabots have to keep saying, “What he meant was….” You people keep having to make explanations for what your guy and his surrogates say. It’s like you’re all yelling, “Who you gonna believe? Me or your lyin’ ears?”

Comment by Pieter B | 2008-04-25 16:00:01

Actually, the more sexist, though less threatening, comment was from Joe Scarborough the night of the primary. Paraphrasing, he asked Congressman Harold Ford “If Hillary doesn’t do as well as she needs to here, there’s going to be pressure from within the party for her to put an end to it. If you’re given that assignment, how would you approach Bill Clinton to tell his wife that it’s time to quit?” Jesus.

Senator Clinton takes all comers and shows Obama what he really is, pound for pound the worst immoral, lightwieght bigot in politics today.

Comment by Pandora | 2008-04-25 16:08:09

Shouldn’t secret service be involved. Someone (Olbermann) threatened former first lady. Any public or private threats are investigated so this needs to be investigated.

Comment by Silver | 2008-04-25 16:10:49

I was also offended by Fineman’s phrase “adults in the Democratic party need to step in and stop this thing like a referee”. I thought that reference was belittling and demeaning, as if Hillary needed to be treated like a child. This nomination process is an authentic and passionate political race. If these blow-hard Democratic elders can’t deal with what elections are all about, they really need to find a new occupation and get out of politics—and so do the pundits.

I don’t care about Keith much, I haven’t watched his show in God knows how long. I’m not surprised by the stuff that comes out his mouth.
However, let’s not go reduce out critic in name calling and vulgar words.
Keith/MSNBC has to be made aware that one cannot talk about an ex-first lady, US state senator, and presidental candidate in that fashion. Actually, you cannot talk in that fashion about nobody, period. Man or woman.

I know, I know, is free speech, but in this case it goes beyond that.

Comment by Amanda | 2008-04-25 17:03:01

Yeap, I read it at TM that Keith has apologized, saying that when he said “he” actually didn’t mean “he”, but “he or she”. In other words,a honest to goodness gender bias mistake ;) .

Comment by Karen | 2008-04-25 17:12:31

If you read the Olbermann quote…he says “It is a metaphor. I apologize: the generic “he” gender could imply something untoward. It should’ve been “only the other comes out - from a political point of view.” You could’ve called for reaction first if your main motive had merely been criticism.”

Note the last line. Critics must call and check with him first. How many times do you think he calls his “worst person” before he goes after them to see if he has told the truth. Back handed apology if you ask me. Looks like he suffers from his own “I am the one” syndrome.

Comment by annagain | 2008-04-25 17:23:40

Olbermann is a filthy excuse for a man who should be flogged for getting away with this. This puffed up rooster has lost all credibility.

Where is the outrage from the DNC, from the network — here is the acid test for anyone who doubts the depravity of his statements: if he said “someone should take Obama into a room and only the other one comes out.” — You tell me an Obama supporter wouldn’t be screaming racism or that this was a call for violence of some kind.

Keith Olbermann would be fired intstantly and have his head on a pike.

Comment by Reverend Wrong | 2008-04-27 22:10:25

One could argue he should be fired but calling for his head on a pike I would not do. He is being criticized for violent rhetoric and I would not use violent rhetoric to express my disgust. I am not the thought police, I am just expressing my opinion.

Comment by Cath | 2008-04-26 00:50:31

To Obama supporters: Please read the following text from the Olbermann-Fineman dialogue. I’ve substituted Obama for Clinton and manipulated the context a bit to change it from sexist (male takes female into room, only he comes out) to racist (party of superdelegates takes Obama into a room, but only they come out). Maybe this will help you understand why some of us (especially women) are offended. And I used to like Keith Olbermann.

“FINEMAN: Oh, I think there‘s been talk of retribution. I know there‘s been talk of retribution for weeks… What this is going to require, at some point,…there‘s some adults somewhere in the Democratic Party to step in and stop this thing like a referee in a fight that could go on for 30 rounds. That‘s what‘s going on. Those are the super-super-superdelegates who are going to have to really decide this.

OLBERMANN: Right. The superdelegates who are adult and can take Obama in a room and only they come out — that kind of a question.”

Offensive?

Can’t speak for Obama folks, but as a Hillary supporter, Democrat, and liberal I find it offensive in BOTH contexts.

Comment by DianeJ | 2008-04-27 22:03:10

MSNBC is in the tank for Obama so while I am disgusted to read and hear what Keith say I am not surprised. I don’t watch MSNBC I don’t feel you get fair and balanced news there like you do on some of the other cables networks.
