Words Have Consequences

SusanUnPC’s Note: We discussed this in “Olbermann Wants Hillary Taken Down NOW, and Forcibly,” however it should be brought up again since Olbermann’s faint apology was ONLY to Rachel Sklar, the author of the Huffington Post article, and NOT to Hillary Clinton. That does not take care of the matter. And Karen’s words are important because she has some expertise in the area of violence against women.
___________________

Like a lot of you, I read Keith Olbermann’s call for violence against Hillary with disgust and anger.  My first thought was that this a-hole’s gone too far with this one - he needs firing and he needs it now.

Here it is again in case you missed it…

“Yeah, somebody who can take her into a room and only he comes out.”

Thankfully, a couple fellow Hillary-supporters have expressed similar disgust and anger over those comments.  Calling out KO has pretty much been covered, though I may veer off in that direction a bit tonight.  But what’s still got me pissed off are some of the comments by other supposed Democrats in response to those diaries.  Some of them were just as vile if not more so than Olbermann’s slime-fest last night.

SO this goes out to all who’ve pointed fingers at us with accusations of “faux outrage” in response to our very real fury over this shit…

Ya know I thought I was pissed over KO’s venomous attack on Hillary but that was NOTHING compared to the fury I feel now after reading some of your comments.

“Faux outrage”????  Seriously - this garbage should sicken and infuriate anyone who gives a shit about women - ANY woman.  Women are attacked every minute of every day in our society, and here we see a prominent journalist (and I use the term “journalist” loosely here) advocating violence against a former First Lady - a sitting United States SENATOR - a candidate for the presidency for feck sake and you have the gall to accuse us of faux outrage????

Look around you boys - this place is filled with feminists (both men and women).  You may not give a shit about the violence inflicted upon women in our society but we do and to accuse us of faking disgust and outrage is adding insult to injury.

This isn’t faux outrage - I - AM - SHAKING - WITH - RAGE!  Not only over Olbermann’s misogynistic attacks on Hillary, but for the excuses you’re making for what he said.   Making light of this by saying the post should have been tagged as “snark”, or bitching because 3 other folks have posted diaries on this - claiming we’re not as pissed as we claim goes way beyond the pale.

We’re pissed so don’t you DARE accuse us of faking it.  This isn’t just about Olbermann. This isn’t just about Hillary.  And this certainly isn’t about Obama although he’s fed us (and the media) a steady diet of this sexist shit to suit his own purposes.

This is about disrespecting women.  This is about feeding the idea that we’re not worthy of respect.  This is about not tolerating violent actions or speech that advocates violence against women in our society.

And if you don’t fucking GET that then you’re even more out of touch than I ever imagined.

The hypocrisy - the blatant disregard for the fact that this feeds into a very real and serious problem in our society - violence against women - is just mind-blowing.

You guys would be shitting yourselves over this if the comments had been directed at his holiness. You’d be up in arms if this had been about BO - you’d be accusing Olobermann of leading a lynching party for feck sake and yet here we see you make one excuse after another - level multiple accusations of ‘faux outrage” over how Olbermann’s remark has left the women of MyDD’s online community feeling.

Your response to a very real issue here just solidifies my belief that sexism is not only tolerated by other Democrats in this race, but that it’s promoted by people who used to point accusatory fingers at the Republicans when they pull this shit.

HAVE YOU NO SHAME?

I wrote the above bit during a break at work this afternoon.  Since then I got an update to all this.  Apparently Olbermann “clarified” what he said in some lame-ass attempt to smooth things over - the guy wants to keep his job.  If he really regretted what he’d said he would have apologized to Hillary and every other woman - out over the airwaves - rather than have the PR department at MSNBC send over some statement to a writer over at Salon.  Take a look…

Today, Olbermann apologized. “It is a metaphor. I apologize: the generic ‘he’ gender could imply something untoward,” Olbermann said, in a statement MSNBC spokesperson Alana Russo forwarded me a few minutes ago. “It should’ve been ‘only the other comes out — from a political point of view.’”

This so-called apology is worthless.  He meant what he said and we still need to call him on this shit.  So he gets it out there and is in the clear with an apology.  Am I the only one who thinks this is getting to be really old?  The way that general attacked Hillary over the whole tomb of the unknown’s / bosnia and then BO came out and distanced himself from it?  They attack, step back a tiny bit with some statement saying they reject what was said, and everyone goes on their merry way - claiming that Hillary is the one who’s gone all negative in this campaign.

It’s clear that some here just don’t get why we’re so pissed off over all this.  In case you missed it, this isn’t the first time someone’s launched this sort of vile and misogynistic attack on Hillary.  We’ve been pointing out this sexism and hate for years now and every time we do people dismiss us as concern trolls, or say it’s “silly season”.

Well ya know what guys?  Words have consequences!  You want to know why I’m so outraged by KOs verbal assault on Hillary? Not to mention tweetys etc? Check this out

Evansville police are investigating a possible threat against Hillary Clinton posted on the Facebook website.

The person who wrote the comment allegedly has ties to the local Barack Obama office.

[Snip]

According to the incident report filed with the Evansville Police Department, the comment in question reads, “Make sure Hillary avoids the sniper fire next time she comes to Evansville.”

This asshole might have been “joking” when he spoke of snipers in IN but ya know what? All it takes is one unhinged loser and these words lead to a woman’s death.

That happens every - single - day to the less famous among us.

Words have consequences and if you’re sitting behind one of the biggest mics in the world and say shit like KO said today - you need to pay the price with your job.

Words have consequences.

I posted my first pro-Hillary diary back in June of last year, in which I answered someone’s question as to why she should support my chosen candidate.  In it, I talked about how things might change for women around the world if we put a woman in the Oval Office.  I’ve written a lot since then but I think that first post is one I’m most proud of.  It was true then and after the sexism and misogyny that’s come out during this campaign, I’m even more convinced of it…

we’ve been led for well over 200 years by men and look where it’s gotten us.  Over 30 years have passed since Roe and we’re STILL fighting for our right to choose - hell to even have access to birth control!  Children make up a massive percentage of those living in poverty.  Our schools are a mess in urban areas.  Court rulings regarding child support and protection orders are virtually ignored, girls are literally starving themselves to death to achieve some ideal image as portrayed in our MSM, domestic violence isn’t taken seriously by our courts or even the cops… the list goes on and on and ON when it comes to the lack of respect for the rights of women & our children in this society.

The more I look at her record and her position on the issues, the more convinced I am that it’s time we elected this woman as president.  Maybe then people will take us seriously - as workers, as providers for our families, and as human beings who deserve the same respect given to the men in our land.

She’s smart.  She’s got a proven track record when it comes to working for the rights of women & children, and she’s got a head-start on a lot of the other candidates when it comes to rebuilding our f#cked-up reputation with other world leaders.

Put a woman with her brains and background in the White House - let her show the rest of the world what a WOMAN can do if she gets the chance - and maybe things will (finally!) start to change for us here at home.

Put this woman in the White House and maybe we won’t see as much hate - and tolerance for that hate - in our public discourse when it comes to the women in our lives.

I’m not so worried about Hillary - she’s tough and can more than hold her own against losers like Olbermann.  I’m more worried about the women who’ll be hurt by that one unhinged loser who’ll take things like Olbermann’s attack to heart - think women are less than deserving of respect - and hurt or kill someone as a result.

Guys I’m aiming to change the world a little at a time before my little girl is grown.  Maybe she can go out into a world where women aren’t treated like this any more.  Maybe she can even run for President some day without having to put up with the vile garbage Olbermann’s shoveling out over our airwaves.

In the meantime…

To those who’re as pissed off as I am over this garbage…  This is an action diary gang.  I want you to do two things and I want you to do it right now…

Call, email or send smoke signals out to MSNBC demanding that they fire Olbermann’s ass over this comment.  Note that his call for physical attacks on a sitting US senator and former First Lady constitute a crime in our society and if they don’t fire him we’ll start demanding legal action against him.

After you’ve done that I want you to express your outrage in a very real and positive way as far as this campaign goes -and don’t you boys dare attack me for this because it’s a very real response to what’s been going on in this campaign…

I want you to send Hillary whatever the hell you can to help her fight back against this kind of hateful garbage.  If I’ve ever seen an example of why we need her in the Oval Office, Olbmerann’s attacks and the response he elicits from Obama’s followers is it.

Screw the faux outrage - I’m mad as hell and I’m not gonna take it any more!

What olberman said and the quote pulled off a my.obama page we talked about in the other thread, about slitting hillary’s throat and throwing her in the river—these are all just some more of what the Obama camp is to women. I will NEVER vote for him. He and his sycophants are a danger to women in America. They are sick bastards whose misogyny can’t even be contained below the surface any longer. I despise Barack Obama for what he has done to racial and gennder progress in America. He should be run out of this country on a rail for the despicable manchild that he is, and take all of his piggish thugs with him.

and then they have the AUDACITY to send people here to call us rude. You spend a day at my.obama and you find out that rude is small stuff next to their blatent hatred of Hillary, and it is CLEAR it is because she is a woman, no matter how hard they pretend it isn’t. I hope their dicks all fall off. And they take these young woman along with them, and they never realize this could be THEN in ten years after they pull the rug out from under them. They all want to be “post feminist” and they have NO idea how hard fought that battle was. Squandering it will turn out not to be very wise for them.

You’re right, and the insinuations in regard to violence against women are sickening.

But you’re also being baited.

LOOK at Olbermann, he’s a fat old guy, who looks like a walrus.

LOOK at the guys who made the threats against Clinton, those fat stupid ugly wannabes who listen to Leykis, involved in their own fantasy of glory and omnipotence.

Do you see?

If they think you’re afraid, they’ll continue to bait.

No one has to be afraid of these men, they’re fat, stupid ugly and slow, and not so safe themselves.

As the author noted, plenty of people, men and women, will fight back.

Expect this issue to be fed, I would suppose they feel they can nurture it, to cause chaos, and fear.

And I hate to say this, as abhorrent as violence is, sometimes the only thing guys like this understand is violence, it’s said the only thing a true sociopath understands is his own weakness, those who willl hurt HIM. (I don’t believe in sociopaths, I think it’s dissociation.)

The republicans, the chicken hawks, predicated a whole offense on Democrats being too cowardly to fight back.

At this point, real fighting democrats can predicate a defense on republicans too stupid to figure out HOW to fight back.

Times change.

Sick threats like those posted on Obama’s official site should never have been allowed. If his moderators choose to let sickos post threats, then maybe someone in a position of higher power should be monitoring his site. Someone, in an official capacity, should be investigating.

How would you like to be married to some of them?

Comment by beebop | 2008-04-27 20:43:36

That is a huge leap, my friend. No way anyone with that much hatred for women would be able to hide it from one.

Comment by kenoshaMarge | 2008-04-28 10:03:43

Tell that to the women that show up in emergency rooms across this country with black eyes, broken bones, and too scared to do anything but go back home because the a$$hole that abused them has promised to come after them and everyone they love if they dare to leave him.

Tell that to every pregnant woman who is murdered by the father of her fetus. And explain why the number one cause of death in pregnant women in this country is murder.

Always denounce racism and all it’s ugliness. It is disgusting and disgraceful.

But where is the same amount of disdain and outrage over sexism? It casts a far wider net and as Olbermann’s repulsive remarks show, is considered acceptable. Ever wonder how the 24 year old girl that’s sleeping with this cretin feels when she hears stuff like that? Or doesn’t she care so long as she gets her ego boost from screwing a celebrity?

I was fighting for woman’s rights when my daughter was born in 1965. We are still fighting them 43 years later and things haven’t gotten much better. I have 7 granddaughters and am so sad that we are not giving them a world substantially better than the one we gave my daughter 43 years ago.

The sad truth is that as ugly as the men that are misogynists, there are too many women that will not fight for their rights if they think it makes them unpopular or unappealing to the very men that denigrate them. Too bad there aren’t as many women interested in improving their brains as are interested in getting breast implants.

Women outnumber men. If we stood together we could stop much of the ugliness against women. There’s the catch; if we stood together.

You are so right, alegre. In fact, who knows if KO subliminally had anything to do with the barely-discussed driveby shot(s?) at an HRC campaign office last night in Durham, NC.

But I submit your argument applies, not only to violence towards women, but also to what I’ve seen so often spewing from some of the Obama blogger army: ugly threats against anyone at all whose opinion differs from theirs.

Trying to stop discourse, whether it be by shouting, by ugly threats, or by physical action is the very opposite of what America is supposed to be about.
Embracing our differences and discussing them is one of the finest duties of democracy. Hating them is one of the worst deviations from it.

Comment by tam | 2008-04-27 20:33:55

When did the drive by shots occur? It angers me that I am just now hearing about this.

Comment by mary | 2008-04-27 20:44:37

Last night, I understand. I picked it up in the comments under a posting at Taylor Marsh. No mention of it on any msm I found today.

Comment by Andy | 2008-04-27 20:49:34

“news” on this?

Comment by kenoshaMarge | 2008-04-28 10:05:37

How often is there any major reporting about drive-by shootings? Just a fact of life in some communities. One more indication of a media that doesn’t do it’s job.

Agree with every word of this and thanks to Alegre.

Every time I read obama’s followers write how worried they are for his safety I understand because I worry about HER safety.

We were all outraged by “nappy headed ho’s” how come only some of us are outraged by a suggestion that this woman who has served us all honorably is murdered?

It is only the Obamabrainwashed fanatics who are so filled with hate that cannot even see their own lack of morality on this issue.

Yes, he should be suspended or fired.

And yes it was entirely vile and dangerous.

Violence isn’t a joke. Women VOTE and we are pissed.

There will be no unity, they have made sure of that.

Ive pretty much lost hope for Hillary, the most qualified person to be president, to actually win. The media along with many Democrats already have their mind set on Obama - the savior of the Democratic party.

This is the problem - the Republican machine will destroy Obama just as they did with Gore and Kerry. By the time they are finished Obama will be a flip flopping drug abuser from France. Hillary, on the other hand, would be better prepared to weather the Republican storm. It’s going to be a very close race in November for whoever gets the nomination. If the Democrats continue to be devided they will lose another election. The only chance I see is a Clinton/ Obama ticket. Are the Democrats smart enough to see this? I dont think so.

The thought of a McCain presidency makes me sick to my stomach but I guess I’d better get used to it.

Thanks all of you Democrats who continue to trash Hillary.

Comment by mary | 2008-04-27 20:48:27

Oh, Gore and Kerry didn’t come with nearly so many goodies for the Repubs to exploit as Obama has. The Kerry and Gore exploitations will be mild in comparison to the one to come if Obama is the nominee.
They will figuratively eviscerate him.

Comment by JoeySky | 2008-04-27 20:51:52

How can you say that? No true HRC supporters lost hope for HRC.

And no true HRC supporters won’t see that Obama is a liability to the presidential ticket and down ticket. If he get the VP slot, GOP will attack him using Wright, Rezko, Ayers, and it will bring the whole team down.

If he runs as VP, GOP will use him to attack down tickets the same way they are doing now in NC.

Obama is toxic to DEM chance in GE.

Comment by Reverend Wrong | 2008-04-27 20:52:29

Ive pretty much lost hope for Hillary

I have not nor should you. I used to feel like you then I stopped watching the MSM for the most part. I replaced the pro-Obama MSM with this and other excellent blogs. My spirit remain very high!

Howard Dean today basically left the door open Hillary to get the nomination, if you could listen through the pro-Obama propaganda from that shithead Russert.

Comment by kenoshaMarge | 2008-04-28 10:11:28

I didn’t read Howard the same way you did. I thought he was paving the way to fix the FL and MI problem after there was a nominee. And that he knew that the nominee would be Obama.

Quite honestly I believe the fix is in, in more ways than one and that they think all the little old lady Dems and lunch bucket Dems will fall in line because we have no where else to go.

If they believe that I believe they are in for a very big surprise. And not a happy surprise with pretty paper and a nice big bow.

Zama, she’s well on her way to winning the nomination, and then some.

Even back in February/March, I’ve never wavered from my belief that her fight to the finish–and her worthiness for the POTUS gig–means she will prevail.

I gleefully await many heads-a-poppin’ when she is finally addressed as: “Madame President”.

Comment by zama guy | 2008-04-27 21:41:06

Nicole - I hope your right. She is the best candidate. You give the American voters a lot of credit, however. After 2 Bush terms and after seeing all the attacks on Hillary I do not share your optimism. At one time I also thought the best rise to the top.

Comment by Nicole | 2008-04-27 22:08:00

I’m optimistic ONLY because she is the best–and like her husband, she appeals to the moderate heart of many Americans…something many in the Democratic party fail to recognize (or prefer not to). The chattering classes have, once again, underestimated a Clinton.

Although it might seem like the party has been “hijacked” by the (self-titled) “progressive” wing, I do believe there are enough realists who will do what’s right, and staunch the hemorrahaging (sp?) before it’s too late.

Don’t loose faith, Hillary is a fighter. She knows what she’s doing. The DNC is going to have to deal with Florida and Michigan, too, no matter what the media says.

You also have to remember that the delegate counts are only projections. They are estimates, guesses the media makes. Most caucus states like mind don’t even seat our delegates until the state convention. I just went to my county convention yesterday, we haven’t even begun the delegate process. It takes a long time.

Superdelegates are also going to have to look at electability and what’s in the best interest of the party. They aren’t bound by anything, so an endorsement means nothing. Besides, more people have turned out and cast a ballot for Hillary then any other Dem candidate in history.

After Penn. she took the popular vote which may not get her delegates from the caucus states, but it sends a message to the DNC about who will be the most electable.

I disagree….I say never count a Clinton out until it’s over….It is my belief that the longer this goes on the more exposure there is to prejudice of all kinds in our country and that this could end up as good becuse the national dialogue is taking place….What a Hillary presidency means to me is that the fight to eliminate prejudice of all kinds will enter a new level that will benefit all people. The most insidious and globally devastating prejudice is also the oldest and that is mysogyny.
It is insidious because women participate in it. If an AA actor performed in
“black face” he or she would be soundly and publicly reprimanded and yet women do this in daily life and often in the public sphere.
N.O.W. has compiled various videos they are asking women to distribute that have to do exactly with this issue. It is time once again for women to stand up. When Clinton is unfairly attacked because she is female or threatened because her candidacy threatens the status quo….It is a threat and attack that is levelled at all women….
It is the proverbial shot across the bow warning women to keep their place and that place will be decided by men.
This is something that no woman of any race, age, religion, or culture can afford to accept anymore.
Hillary’s candidacy represents the next wave and this can benefit us all….

Absolutely disgusting; and an awfully backwards and scary precendent for women in the workplace. I guess all bets are off in what is now tolerated again…

MSNBC: FIRE OLBERMANN

Comment by mary | 2008-04-27 20:53:14

They’re not going to fire him. His ratings are too high. That makes them too much money.

If you are going to get to him at all, there are only two ways, imho. One: turn the advertisers off of him.
or Two: have a very public campaign to persuade people not to watch him. That would have to be *very* public in order to actually accomplish what it needs to… convince either MSNBC or the advertisers that he’s now a losing proposition.

Remember, this isn’t a news channel. It is an entertainment channel, largely, that also makes money with news commentary part of the time. Otherwise, why would they do so much of that inside-the-prison crap? They would be doing news 24/7, and they don’t.

Comment by Reverend Wrong | 2008-04-27 21:02:23

Comment by Lisa | 2008-04-27 20:52:46

Don’t forget, karen, Imus was fired for the racist “nappy-headed” part. Not for the misogynistic “ho’s” part.

I’m not surprised we aren’t seeing the same outcry. It’s been this way for a long time, now. One can malign a woman’s virtue day in and day out and no one bats an eye. People wear t-shirts calling Hillary a bitch and/or a cunt. The “bro’s before ho’s” garbage.

Acceptance of this hate is so ingrained in our society we don’t even recognize it. It’s broadcast on national television and the women that speak out about it are dismissed as “typical” females; over-emotional, hysterical, oversensitive, and irrational. We’re taught it isn’t acceptable for a woman to stand up for herself or her gender.

That’s why so many dislike and even hate Hillary and other strong women. That’s why they are called bitches, because they reject and defy those stereotypes and that scares people who are afraid of losing their dominance.

Obama is cast as a unifying hero pushing for racial equality.

Hillary, though, is a castrating bitch.

So tired of this narrative. Even more sick of the country blindly (and even willingly?) swallowing it.

Comment by zama guy | 2008-04-27 21:18:17

I agree totally - the unequality of women is based on ignorance. I’ll say this again - Democrats who trash Hillary are going to split the party even more and promote the election of McCain. Are American people ignorant? Was Bush elected president?

Don’t forget, karen, Imus was fired for the racist “nappy-headed” part. Not for the misogynistic “ho’s” part.

Ever seen the Obama “Bro’s Before Ho’s” poster? I plan to make great use of that everywhere. To remind.

Words do matter.

I grew up in Dallas, Texas. I in elementary school when Adlai was spat upon by the local Republican Ladies Club. The local “paper of record” said it was regrettable, but Stephenson brought it upon himself. And then Lyndon and Lady Bird were swatted with placards by Birchers while here on a visit as OUR senator. Again, the POR (local paper of record) lamented the event, but criticized LBJ for his pro-UN views.

And on that fateful day just a few years later, my mother took me out of school to go see President Kennedy. I brushed fingertips with him as he drove out of the airport. The crowds were large and enthusiastic, and very friendly. JFK commented to Gov. Connally, “You can’t say they don’t love me in Dallas.”

That morning, the local Birchers ran a full page ad in the Dallas Morning news suggesting Kennedy shouldn’t have come to Dallas, because “Dallas” might not react kindly. The POR extended a tepid welcome editorially, pointing out how “out of touch” he was.

That it was a left-wing nut from another town who murdered him isn’t the point. The point is that WORDS had created an atmosphere of hate that fed the unhinged communist sympathizer to take action that he may have thought he could get away with.

Feeding off the words they’d read and heard, the kids in my upper-middle class Jr/Sr High School cheered when the murder was announced over the PA.

Words matter. When you feed an atmosphere of hatred with hints of approval for violence, there are plenty of people who hear those words as encouragement.

I remember the consequences. Words matter.

Thank you, Allegre. I just wrote MSNBC, too. I am furious at the comments by Olbermann, the level of violence that is being accepted against Clinton (and all women), as well as sickened that so many young women are blithely following along (not unlike all of the progressives accepting this man touting Reagan and the First Bush - whaaaa?).

I am in COMPLETE agreement with Uppity, and have said this numerous times - I will NEVER vote for this misogynistic, homophobic, arrogant, superficial, copycat. No way. Never.

right on Alegre. Don’t you worry - we’ll show these punks. Hillary is gonna win this thing. She’s gonna win it despite Obama and despite the total lack of support from the Democratic party leaders. And you know the one good thing about all these? She won’t owe any of these bastards ANYTHING once she’s in office!

Thanks for the post. I used to read the liberal blogs quite a bit and post once in awhile. The blatant hatred for women, sexism, and just feckless disregard for anything resembling reason made me flee.

The double standard is quite apparent and indefensible. But the male journalist is rewarded for his misogyny. Look at the difference in the treatment of Chris Matthews and Randi Rhodes. Perhaps she will see that the double standard that canned her and rewards the like of Matthews and Olberman is the same misogynistic standard that makes Senator Clinton the object of hatred by insecure males.

Anyone that advocates violence against women or men for that matter in that “take them to the back room” way is not a Democrat in my book. This is not only about advocating violence against a woman or a public figure (hell threats against bus drivers are prosecutable) its about advocating violence to solve an issue. Does anyone see the gargantuan irony in all this? Everyone has jumped on the Obama bandwagon because he was against enacting violence against Iraq. Yet these Obama supporters feel perfectly fine in advocating violence against Hillary Clinton and Clinton supporters. Hypocrites. They offer not a tenth of the outrage they direct at Hillary to the man that actually took us into Iraq (George Bush) because hey they think a woman is easier to threaten. Look at Olberman’s own rhetorical cowardice. He hid behind a big bad superdelegate to do the act of taking Hillary out. He didn’t have the cojones to even say he’d do it himself. Coward and hypocrite.

Olbermann is a puffed up rooster and a miserable excuse for a journalist, pundit or a man for that matter. He was respectful, and practically cowed when Senator Clinton took him on face to face the other night — she was brilliant, by the way — and en pointe as usual, but behind her back KO does this to her?

He is a true coward.

I have written to complain as well — to MSNBC and to all their public relations execs. I also sent my complaints to other newscasters who have actually been more fair — I have no faith that anyone will do anything about this. But I do think it is important that we express our outrage. Without it, the powers that be assume it is business as usual.

Until they feel the loss of ratings, until they feel it in the pocketbook, this inexcusable filth will continue. Just ask the pro-Obama websites that have seen their traffic drop 40% in the last month or two. FOX news also gets much higher ratings that MSNBC.

When you insult and demean one woman like this, you demean us all.

I do have to wonder, if Olbermann had put Obama in his little fantasy and said someone should take him down a long, dark country road and only the SD should come back if he would still have his job. I very much doubt it.

Both women and blacks have a very different historical view of Keith’s fantasy than Olbermann could ever understand from his ‘rich, white mans’ perspective. I think the reaction to the words is visceral and completely outside of that blowhard’s world view.

Comment by BluestBlue | 2008-04-27 23:59:01

I’m with you Alegre, I reached my limit on Friday and sent the letter below to the DNC.

I think they should be included in the list of who people should write and call. Not that it will do any good, I’ve been asking them when they are going to stand up for women and speak out against the sexism and misogyny in the campaign rhetoric and the press since it first started.

Everyone needs to add their voice, then add your dollars to Hillary’s campaign. As much as you can, as quick as you can.

BluestBlue

What I told the DNC:

What do I think? Howard Dean, Donna Brazile, and the DNC want to know what I think?

I’ve told you before, but you haven’t listened. I’m a woman, so evidently it is fair game to dismiss me and belittle my value and my opinions. You do the same thing to Hillary Clinton, so why should I expect anything different from you?

Shall I give you just one example of why I have donated nothing to the DNC and, at this point, will most likely change my long standing Democratic voter registration to Independent?

The DNC, who sanctimoniously intones that they do not take sides in primary races, is now making arrangements to do a joint fundraising program with Barack Obama.

Every time I ask that the DNC and Howard Dean show a tiny bit of backbone and stand up for women, not for Hillary, but to speak out for women against the unbelievable misogyny and sexism of the press in their coverage of Hillary Clinton, the DNC rep spouts the same swill:

“we’re neutral”, “we don’t get involved in primary campaigns” .

You lie again and again about what the rules require and what the remedies are. You ignore Barack Obama’s rule breaking in Florida (Press conference, TV ads) and make no comment when he lies and whines that since he didn’t campaign in Florida it isn’t fair to count their votes and since he wasn’t on the ballot in Michigan, it wasn’t fair to count their votes.

Obama campaigned in FL and dangled the seating of the delegates in a press conference in Florida. He took his own damn name off the ballot in Michigan. He thought he was being so clever at the time. His inexperience shows pretty clearly here, in this very simple action. He doesn’t appear to look out on the chessboard and see what moves are coming up. Do you think that might be important for a president?

If anyone had doubts that you had made up your minds who YOU wanted as president, there are no doubts now.

Your haranguing of superdelegates to choose sides on your timetable is unseemly and one sided. Your lies about the role of superdelegates in the election process show blatant bias. I wonder why you bother allowing us to go through the charade of finishing the scheduled primaries.

And don’t get me started on Obama’s patronizing and demeaning view of women. He can’t really wonder why women say they refuse to vote for him, can he?

In the beginning I just thought he lacked any accomplishments or experience, I hoped he would run after he gained them because he looked like a promising candidate. Seems like women (Remember us? We were formerly the backbone of the Democratic party) aren’t his only problem either. It looks like rank and file Democrats just don’t trust him.

But at this point he isn’t even “likeable enough” anymore. His petulance went on display long ago when he didn’t get his way, but flipping Hillary off and quoting a rapper that demeans women in his lyrics at a campaign event are juvenile frat-boy antics that don’t rise to the level of dignity required by the office of
the President of the United States.

We know where the last seven plus years of frat boy humor and lack of intelligence got us. Broke, with no jobs, ballooning deficit, hated by the world, tied down in a senseless war, and in fear of losing our democracy and basic freedoms.

He thinks because a Republican votes for him in the primary they’ll be there in the general? He thinks those caucus victories in Red states will make them change magically to blue? Yeah, right . I thought Democrats were in favor of living in the reality-based world.

I am an educated woman. I graduated from a top university and I’ve worked in positions of responsibility my entire career. I’m intelligent and I work hard.

When I hire an employee, I look at what they have actually accomplished. I look at their demonstrated skills and abilities. This is the best predictor of future success. Anyone working in the real world knows this. If you have hired staff you would know this too.

I would only consider “giving pretty speeches” a
factor in hiring if the person’s main job was to give pretty speeches. We all know that the president’s responsibilities involve a little more than that.
Charm alone doesn’t cut it when you need to get a job done .

If Obama had actually accomplished any of the things he speaks about we’d be having a very different discussion. That just isn’t the case.

I personally do find Hillary both personable and charming. But that isn’t why I’m voting her and donating to her campaign. She knows what she is talking about. She is a policy wonk and can speak intelligently on the ills of the country and how we can solve them. She isn’t afraid of doing the hard work required, she has demonstrated that she works hard. She knows how government works, that government exists to serve the people, and that competence in government is a good thing. She gets things done, working bipartisanly, but not giving away the
important Democratic victories of the past.

Hillary supports the issues I care about and that the American people need her to implement NOW.

She will work tirelessly for universal healthcare, she will start the long overdue investment in our energy future and needed scientific research. She will protect social security and veterans benefits. She will restore our standing in the world. She won’t allow another Katrina debacle to happen.

And you know what, I bet women won’t be making just 77 cents on the dollar that men make by the end of her 8 years and I bet we have a cure for breast cancer then too. What a difference a (capable) woman makes!

She is a wonk and I like that. I like working with smart people who know their job and get the work done. I can respect that. I hire those people. I am one of those people.

Pretty boys who talk a nice line with empty promises and never quite get around to accomplishing what they talk about don’t strike me as presidential material. They lead to what we have seen over the last seven years with the current juvenile frat boy sitting in the oval office playing at being president while the country is reduced to a shambles.

Howard Dean and the DNC seem determined to impose THEIR WILL on the Democratic base.

You’ll be losing a lot of voters come the fall if you don’t get off that river in Egypt. You are living in denial.

Can’t quite figure out why you don’t have enough donations to pay for that little party in Denver? Let me give you a little hint, listen to the voters. They’ll be leaving you in DROVES because of your behavior and your bias.

They may not vote for McCain, although some will, but a lot will be sitting on their hands come November. It probably won’t change the outcome, but it is incredibly sad that, in a year where the election of a Democrat should be a cake walk, you want to put forward a candidate who cannot win.

And the way you pissed away FL and MI, even Hillary may have trouble with lingering resentment from these disenfranchised voters. They remember the last time their votes weren’t counted, and what that outcome was, even if you don’t.

Do you really think we don’t read the DNC rules? Do you think we can’t see where you let some states off the hook for moving their contests up? Do you think we don’t understand the options and remedies available in “the rules” for FL & MI? Do you really think the voters are that stupid?

If you don’t remember that Florida has been critical in past elections, many of
us “stupid” voters do. Perhaps that is just an inconvenient truth for you?

Do you remember how important Ohio has been in recent elections? Who do you think won those states? Look at the Electoral College map and do the math. Who do you think can get the job done? Please remember that we live in a reality based world, get used to it and apply it to your electoral math. That is the only standard that counts in choosing a nominee

My party has left me. It doesn’t stand for the things I thought it did. I was proud of Nancy Pelosi, a fellow Californian, breaking the glass ceiling and becoming Speaker, but now I just shake my head when I hear her comments and bias.

You stand by while people try to label Bill Clinton a racist. The most successful Democratic politician in a generation and you allow Obama to try and brand Bill Clinton a racist (remember Obama admitted the memo came from his campaign at the debate, so quit your whining) and you have the unmitigated gall to label Hillary as going negative in this campaign?

You people don’t act like party leaders. Not of any party I want to be part of. You don’t care about me, my concerns, or my opinions. You insult me each time you diss my candidate. You insult women everywhere each time you refuse to speak out against the unbelievably blatant misogyny in the press, not to mention what comes from Obama and his campaign, which he says he sets the tone for.

Good Lord, have you heard the things coming from MSNBC? Even just looking at this week, not even counting the insulting bloviating of Russert, Tucker, and Matthews, past and present.

Did you see Shuster and his pen? Unfortunately that was the least of it this week, although it was extremely offensive and dismissive of women.

Olbermann wins the “worst person in the world” prize with his suggestion that someone BEAT Hillary into submission . That was way beyond the pale.

It is inexcusable and you should be leading the outcry against that type of comment. Instead you snicker in the back room and think we don’t hear. Your actions speak louder than any words or snickers could ever sound.

I see from your inaction that this is all acceptable conduct in your world view.

In what sense can you claim to support traditional DEMOCRATIC VALUES? How are you demonstrating your
support of women and your support equal rights for
all? Don’t Women count anymore? What about Women’s Rights are Human Rights? Or can you just ignore that ideal because Hillary said it?

Hillary had the guts to stand up to the Chinese. I don’t think Obama has
demonstrated any intestinal fortitude. He voted “present” on issues critical to women from a SAFE Democratic district. He also lied about it being during his US Senate campaign, but that seems par for the course for him, adjusting reality to suit his needs… who else does that? GWB perhaps?

Hillary continues to inspire me because she gets up every day and keeps going, working towards what she knows is the best outcome for the country, what she knows is right. It doesn’t matter what filth gets thrown at her by the press or even her fellow “Democrats”.

She picks herself up and keeps going. AND SHE STILL CONTINUES TO SAY SHE WILL SUPPORT, AND WHOLEHEARTEDLY CAMPAIGN FOR, THE EVENTUAL DEMOCRATIC NOMINEE. UNLIKE BARACK OBAMA. UNLIKE MICHELLE OBAMA.

I’m going to donate more money to Hillary right now. I trust her. Hillary is working for me. She is qualified and I’m hiring her to do the job your candidate isn’t capable of doing.

You don’t want my view; you haven’t listened to my opinions in the past. I don’t know why I’m bothering to give my feedback one last time.

You think you have the right to impose your view on the outcome. This is bad enough when it comes from the press, but shouldn’t I expect better from my political party?

Comment by ritamary | 2008-04-28 00:42:39

BluestBlue, you have pretty much said it all. How many of us typical white middle-aged women will leave the Democratic party if Obama is the candidate? This life-long Dem will do exactly that.

Did anyone notice how Obama reprimanded his surrogate Big Eddie Schultz for calling male Republican McCain a war monger? But Obama never said one word about his surrogate Randi Rhodes calling Democratic women HRC and Geraldine Ferraro “f*cking whores”.

By the way, Randi Rhodes was not fired; she quit. Apparently she is spewing her hatred somewhere else. It is not important to me where she is working now since I will never listen to her again.

Honestly, I think it’s a waste of time contacting MSNBC because whoever is running the show over there doesn’t care. It might be better to find out some emails of the parent company, which would be GE. Start using them instead of just MSNBC. If you could come up with some email addresses for them it would be even better.

I suggest everyone also contact their local NBC stations. Nothing will be done until the locals are inundated as well.

I wrote both of my local stations, also questioning why no reporter has investigated the comments on the Obama site. It is time to make a stand. I refuse to live in a world where violence against women is just a normal part of the conversation. My son and I also had a long talk about it. He says that men just don’t notice; I told him it was his responsibility as a man of integrity to stand for what’s right for ALL people.

Write everyone!!!!

Wait, Keith Olbermann’s fans are accusing other people of “faux outrage??” Wow. Keith’s one of the more obvious phonies on TV today–displaying the most rehearsed, insincere “faux outrage” I’ve ever seen.

Two important things everyone must learn: (1) just because they play a “progressive” on TV–or in a blog–doesn’t mean they’re genuinely progressive, and (2) the enemy of my enemy is NOT my friend. He’s just an enemy who can use me right now.
