Which is it Barack? Are you a moron or a liar? Or both? On Monday you claimed your Uncle (not further identified) help liberate Auschwitz. Since it was the Soviets who liberated Auschwitz, that left people wondering who your communist uncle was? So your campaign scrambled to get out the word–No, he meant his great uncle and he meant Buchenwald rather than Auschwitz. There, that settled it.
So I have one question–how in the hell did your uncle get to Buchenwald. Was he in a row boat? Looks like Great Uncle Charlie was in the Navy. Service records for Charles Payne show
Charles W. Payne, born 1924, enlisted 10Nov42, Navy, 6293977 Registered, order #12019, Kansas City, Wyandotte Co., Board #4
UPDATE 3 Here’s what we know for sure:
1. No Charles W. Payne enlisted in or was drafted into the Army from Kansas according to extant Kansas records 1941-43.
2. Obama’s grandmother Payne family has not C.T. Payne. Her brother was Charles W. Payne.
3. The C.T. Payne in the 89th who is said by the Kitchell 89th website to have been at the liberation of Buchenwald is not listed joining Army from Kansas 1941-43.
4. Two C.W. Paynes are listed joining Navy in 1942 frm Kansas. Charles .W. Payne born Kansas City Jan 4 1924 and died 2000 is not Obama relative.
4. Charles W. Payne who joined Navy Reno County is the likely suspect.
Still working to get final confirmation. (Is it asking for too much to get a straight, accurate answer from the Obama campaign? I guess so.)
UPDATED: Looks like initial reports on the History Channel blog are wrong on this point. Charles W. Payne was not Barack’s Uncle Charlie:
UPDATE II: Well, the initial claim that Charles T. Payne was in the Army may not be true appears to be more bullshit. An Obama supporter is claiming that there is a Charles T. Payne who was in the Army. First problem, a review of records for Kansas shows no such person. Second, this unit was not part of any liberation of Buchenwald. Records indicate:
“Concerning the service of Mr. Charles Payne: C.T. Payne was a soldier in the 89th Infantry Division. He served in the 355th Infantry Regiment, Company K. The 355th Infantry Regiment was the unit to liberate Ohrdruf.”

Well, yes and no. Not to defend Obama because I don’t like him and don’t plan to vote for him, but because I think facts need to be straight as far as known. Keeping the facts straight gives you credibility.
According to wikipedia, the grandparents lived most of their lives in the Wichita area until his grandfather apparently enlisted and was sent halfway across the state to Fort Leavenworth which is near K.C. After that they started moving to other states.
I think the Charles Payne story is incorrect. I just don’t know whether Obama lied (highly probable) or whether someone in his family sort of dressed things up as sometimes happens.
I looked and couldn’t find anything that matched in the databases I looked at either. That said, we need to be careful that it doesn’t start to look like we’re going after an old man at the end of his life.
The part about the aircraft assembly plant in Kansas is true. My mother is from Kansas and worked on the assembly line — as did her older sisters. She grew up in a small town in Kansas — you know on the the “white trash*” from Kansas.
In fact my mother’s life pretty much parallels Obama’s grandmother’s life. Except that my mother was a “white trash” farm girl, who went to college, married and followed my career military father from Navy base to Navy base. My mother may have even met Obama’s grandmother in the course of banking at the bank where Obama’s grandmother became a VP. Kansas people find each other — and my mother never lost her Kansas accent.

I think it will be a cold day in hell before they “let” Hillary have the nomination. If Obama is tripped up just before the convention they’ll find a stand in candidate to take his delegates, maybe Al Gore. It definitely won’t be Hillary. In my opinion she needs to defect to the Green party or build her own party from scratch.

There has been much rumblings about the emergence of a third party, a moderate party. I saw a book on it yesterday in Bainbridge Island (in my favorite book store!) The book is by Douglas Schoen, and it’s all about the surge of independent voters.. and how a viable third party is in our future.

My husband is an aerospace engineer, retired. He says the big assembly installation in Kansas for Boeing was in Wichita, not Kansas City. However, for security reasons components were made in installations all over the US, which may have included Kansas City. What was done in Wichita and Kansas City would have been assembly work (putting the planes together) not the manufacturing of them (bending the tin for the wings, fuselage etc). So she could have been employed in Kansas City on some kind of bomber assembly work, maybe. It would be more of a certainty if they were from Wichita. I thought the family was in banking. This is a minor point, but every military family, or military brat knows what contribution their family members made during WWII, Korea, Vietnam, etc.

My dad served. He apparently had really terrible vision, but a body was a body. He worked at a desk job in Newport News. Mom still has it. Certainly we know that many families were not as lucky. Whatever the truth of this is or isn’t, it seems to me that this was a very clumsy attempt of Obama to try to get family creds with WWII history. What I find remarkable is that Obama writes an entire book in honor of his father who bamboozled his mother and left him behind. He does not seem to want to own or give any value to his white side of the family. The family was obviously very loosely structured; most families are very clear about WWII family stories.
He has so romanticized his father and his father’s family that he totally overlooked anything having to do with his mother and her people. But now that he needs some of the history they provide, he is rummaging through their closets and doing a terrible job pulling items out.
It would have been enough to speak in broad terms and refer to a work camp. But he’s OBAMA so he has to make things BIG BIG BIG and in so doing, lays the groundwork for his own comeuppance. While the “gaffe” Obama made about his “uncle” helping liberate Auschwitz is causing a buzz, people are missing the irony of the situation and his total lack of being able to show empathy or connect to his audience. His stammering attempt to show his own personal family narrative of the effects of PTSD on individuals who serve and experience traumatic events during war, as he tried to convey how he has some personal family experience which helps him understand veterans pain, was being delivered to a group of veterans in Las Cruces, New Mexico.
Las Cruces is the home of the only federally funded Bataan Death March Memorial Monument! 1,800 men from the 200th and 515th New Mexican National Guard were part of the Bataan Death March. Considering that Sen. Obama made a truly disgusting analogy at the end of March, at a $1000 a plate private fund raiser in NYC, telling those in attendance that the campaign might feel like “a Bataan death march” but not to worry the future looks bright, you would think he would have tried to mend some fences. Made some attempt to make amends for making such callous and shallow comments.
It is as if he and his campaign staff are on total disconnect. Standing addressing a group of veterans on Memorial Day in a place that commemorates the Men who endured the Bataan Death March, he addresses PTSD and relates it to an “uncle” who served in the Army in Europe in WWII and experienced seeing the horrors of Auschwitz…which couldn’t be true, but anyway…. hey WWII was a lo-o-ong time ago and who can find out how factual what he’s talking about is …what do you mean anybody can go to the National Archives search engine online and check out WWII enlistment cards?

How inexperienced a politician do you have to be to squander the opportunity to connect with the audience of Veterans and their families who may have taken offense at your thoughtless remark comparing a political campaign to the atrocious event that happened to American and Filipino troops on Bataan?
Here was the perfect opportunity to show his empathy. Here was the perfect opportunity to speak about how important the treatment of veteran soldiers suffering PTSD truly is.Here was the opportunity to show his understanding of lessons learned by those events like Bataan in WWII. He could have spoken about how those American troops who were in the Philippines when the Japanese attacked 9 hours after Pearl Harbor in December 1941, fought gallantly with antiquated equipment left over from WWI, on half rations, holding off the Japanese for months before being forced to surrender in the spring of 1942. He could have spoken about the torture and cruelty they endured as POW’s. The horrors of being starved, tortured, watching their fellow soldiers die from decapitation, untreated illnesses, beatings, being set on fire,… How after enduring the Bataan Death March those soldiers watched as their comrades died from disease because there was no medicine, little food, contaminated water. And after all those horrors, that was only the prelude. They later were herded into the holds of what became known as “Hell Ships”so tightly they had no room to move, given little food or water, and transported to Japan to be used as slave labor. And he could have spoken about the ones who survived the 3 and a half years of these horrors to finally be rescued, many wasted away to nothing but skin and bone, like walking skeletons. And the ones who survived and did come home were nursed back to physical health but no one knew about PTSD at the end of WWII. They were left to resume their lives and deal with the memories and the nightly screaming nightmares as best they could for the rest of their lives. Some committed suicide after they returned, some tried to adjust and took up alcohol to try to keep the demons at bay, some learned to just make it from day to day and couldn’t talk about the memories. (By the way, the organization they formed to support each other after the war, the American Defenders of Bataan and Corregidor (ADBC) just had their 63rd (next year will be their last formal convention. The baton will be transferred to their descendants) Annual Convention the first week in May in Louisville, KY. Hillary Clinton surprised them by dropping by to talk with them.)
But Obama, who appears to make up fanciful war stories, didn’t drop by….. it was in Kentucky after all. And he squandered his opportunities once again on Memorial Day in New Mexico.
Unfortunately, he doesn’t appear to have the ability to move outside of his own personal bubble and realize it isn’t about him. He is astonishingly clueless. He continues to show that he knows so little about so many things. Is it any wonder he is having such a problem connecting with large segments of the Democratic base? There are a number of sources who say that Clinton grossly exaggerated her story. That rules her version out as far as credibility is concerned. The fact that the whole exchange was caught on camera and that the clips have been played suggest it was a normal “diplomatic nicety” affair with no danger associated with it. Sinbad said the only danger was local food disagreeing with the eaters. Given all these sources, I’m inclined to believe she made it up. I’d say I have more credibility than those who claim that this non-existent tape exists. You see, wishful thinking ain’t evidence.
