Statement from The Clinton Campaign

Please keep in mind that this is a statement for public consumption and I FERVENTLY hope that much is still going on behind the scenes. NOTE this in the last sentence: “We reserve the right to challenge this decision before the Credentials Committee and appeal for a fair allocation of Michigan’s delegates that actually reflect the votes as they were cast.” And this in the preceding paragraph re Michigan: “[Awarding] to Senator Obama not only the delegates won by Uncommitted, but four of the delegates won by Senator Clinton … violates the bedrock principles of our democracy and our Party. …”

Hillary is poised to be one of the greatest presidents in the history of this nation — and we will not let anything stop her from realizing, for us and for her, the job she can do better than anyone else in the entire nation. She may be the 45th president, if not the 44th. And please donate tonight: with .44. It will LIFT Hillary’s heart, and steel the resolve of her exceptional team of FIGHTERS!

Harold Ickes and Tina Flournoy made the following statement this evening:

Today’s results are a victory for the people of Florida who will have a voice in selecting our Party’s nominee and will see its delegates seated at our party’s convention. The decision by the Rules and Bylaws Committee honors the votes that were cast by the people of Florida and allocates the delegates accordingly.

We strongly object to the Committee’s decision to undercut its own rules in seating Michigan’s delegates without reflecting the votes of the people of Michigan.

The Committee awarded to Senator Obama not only the delegates won by Uncommitted, but four of the delegates won by Senator Clinton. This decision violates the bedrock principles of our democracy and our Party.

We reserve the right to challenge this decision before the Credentials Committee and appeal for a fair allocation of Michigan’s delegates that actually reflect the votes as they were cast.

That is the end of the Democratic Party.

It has now gone on public record that individual votes don’t count.

It has now become the Politburo that the GOP has long accused it of being, only now the Republicans have proof.

It has now validated the 2000 election results.

It has now publicly affirmed the right of of the grandees to cast your vote for you.

It has now abandoned every principle that many of us have fought for all our lives.

It no longer has any high-moral ground to stand on. It is corrupt and (I hope) bankrupt.

And it is at least one member smaller as of tonight.

If this means what I think, its great if Hillary picks up 38 delagates from Florida,,,and I so hope she fights on concerning Mich,Obama did not win any delagates from Mich.

Comment by Nathan Barley | 2008-05-31 19:13:36

Umm. It doesn’t mean what you think. Yesterday, Obama needed 41 delegate votes to clinch the nomination; Clinton needed 244.

Today, Obama needs 64 votes; Clinton needs 240.5.

There are 291 delegates remaining.

Over by Friday.

As a voter from Michigan, I can’t believe the decision the committee made for Michigan. There is no rhyme or reason to their decision. So, in the end, the people of Michigan are doubly cheated on by the DNC and Obamaites:
1. our vote only counts for 1/2, much less than those caucus states where only tens of thousands of people show up as opposed to the 600,000+ who voted
2. even though we didn’t vote for Obama, he gets our votes.
Is this democracy?
Why sould we support the democratic nominee chosen by arbitrary and unfair rules?

They took Clinton’s delegates and gave it Obama, who removed his name from the MI ballot?! Insanity!

Comment by Jolene | 2008-05-31 20:22:00

This is outrageous.

It is a declaration of they want to support Obama at any cost.

They should be ashamed of themselves for not even hiding their bias.

OUTRAGEOUS.

I will be leaving the Democratic Party because there is no rhyme or reason for taking delegates from the person who the voters voted for, and giving them to a man who was listed as uncommitted along with other candidates. Why? Why?

How can this be happening in plain sight and then saying they want to bring the party together.

They have sealed their own fate.

Comment by yttik | 2008-05-31 18:55:24

How can they possibly take delegates away from Clinton when her name was on the ballot and those people knew exactly who they were voting for?

That’s just irrational.

Comment by terri | 2008-05-31 21:40:28

Yes, and his name was on the ballot in FL and she won it and they still gave him half the delegates. Just stinks. There’s something so rotten going on in this country. I think it started when Bill Clinton got elected. The Bush got in on corruption and now the U. S. is a banana republic.

In Ohio, we can’t change our affiliation until — believe it or not — the next primary. So my vote as a Democrat will go to a Republican. Hope that they can do math. Ohio is now RED. I will be donating to John and working for him. My family will be pissed, but a McCain sign goes on my lawn if the party puts that putz on the ballot.

This should not only be an insult to Michigan voters but also to the nation that the Democratic party is not a party of the people but of its chosen leaders, and I sincerely hope that Hillary Clinton takes this battle right through to the convention and in my gut, if the Republicans have a tape of Michelle, then bet last dolloar the Clintons have it as well and should leak it out to prove to America the reality of these marxist Obama’s!

Comment by Billo | 2008-05-31 18:58:26

I’m starting to think Hillary’s camp is playing us all.

I think this ‘take it to Denver’ is a ploy to keep us all registered Dem for as long as possible hoping we magically forget was racists Michelle and BoBo are.

Rush has long said Hillary was a commie, so maybe she is playing us worse than barky.

Comment by Strawberry | 2008-05-31 19:01:15

That was uncalled for, step off little man.

Comment by ChrisXP | 2008-05-31 19:15:58

Actually, he does have a point. If you look at Hillary’s own words about “unity”, and possibility of taking it to the convention (long after the last ability to change party affiliation) it can be seen as a ploy.

These are politicians who will throw more than waffles when it comes to party loyalty.

It’s important that every true Hillary supporter who wishes to have a backup plan (the ability to vote in the GE, especially in states that require voter party registrations) to switch parties BEFORE the deadline. You can still protest, but still be able to vote your conscience.

Thank God I live in a state that doesn’t require party registration. Vote for Hillary in the primary, then vote for ABO (Anyone But Obama) in November — and still love being an Independent. :)

Comment by Adrienne Grey | 2008-05-31 20:23:38

I don’t get it. The convention isn’t long after anything.

First, most states let you change affiliation 30 days or less before an election.

Second, you can vote, or not vote, for any Presidential candidate in the General, regardless of affiliation.

Is there some state that doesn’t have open voting in the General?

*****A

Comment by ChrisXP | 2008-05-31 21:08:42

First, most states let you change affiliation 30 days or less before an election.

Well, from looking at this, most won’t be able to change party affiliation now…

You do not have to vote for a Democrat in the GE just because you are still affiliated with that party. In addition you can register to vote in the GE almost right up to the election.

However, Hillary has stood by the Democratic Party through years of abuse by both Republicans and Democrats. She truly feel a responsibility and love for the party she has worked so hard to represent. And I think it would be almost impossible for her to leave. It would truly break her heart (and Bill’s)

She has a lot more loyalty than I do. I do not expect to be a Democrat anymore by August. I can still vote for Hillary if she is on the ballot or if they allow write-ins in Colorado. But, though I’ve been a Democrat almost as long as Hillary has, I’ll be Goddamned if I’ll vote for Obama. And I will not work for the Party anymore or donate to their f@$#&ing congressional campaigns.

This Party doesn’t stand for what I thought it did all these years. I’ve forgiven a lot, I’ve awaited and waited for them to stand up for me and mine. I’m an independent from now on, and I’ll support whoever I think is best.

Comment by ChrisXP | 2008-05-31 21:42:03

You do not have to vote for a Democrat in the GE just because you are still affiliated with that party. In addition you can register to vote in the GE almost right up to the election.

Again, read the link above.

Even in GA, that has open primaries, new voters have to register MONTHS BEFORE to vote in the GE. This is why when Bill Clinton ran in 1992, the DP in my area set up voter registration booths all over (including the front of Wal-Mart!) 6 months in advance to ensure the voters COULD vote in November. Heck, we even REQUIRE verified IDs to vote in any political election, too — and without none of this nonsense about it hurting voter participation, either. We want voters to vote in their precints, not anywhere they chose. Afterall, the DP has a history of having deceased voting!

Comment by Mary | 2008-05-31 19:13:13

I’m finished with the Democratic Party FOREVER.

4 of Hillary’s votes given to Obama after he voluntarily removed his name from the ballot?

I don’t think so.

Stick a fork in him.

Say hello to President John McCain.

Comment by Patriot | 2008-05-31 20:02:00

Screw McCain, forget Hillary.

You people are all narrow minded hypocrites.

Splitting the votes in Michigan and Florida, when they shouldn’t be counted at all, is a gift to your candidate.

I would have voted for Hillary over McCain, if she had won the primary fairly, but if you would even consider voting for McCain over a democratic nominee, you are ignorant and deserve what you will get.

Comment by Patriot | 2008-05-31 20:25:59

She can always run as the scorched earth party nominee.

Maybe the Clinton party since they are only in it for themselves.

Comment by ChrisXP | 2008-05-31 21:50:40

And you’re for who? Considering this is a pro-Hillary site, and most here are rooting for her, commenting that neither Hillary or McInsane is a candidate is trolling.

Party types are used to parties and will affiliate with them (I’m hoping more will become Independents, so they can vote their conscience, not “just for party”, considering this election candidates is an example of what that damage can do). If they can’t stand Obama on principles, and they rather exercise a hard won right to vote, it’s wrong and foolish to tell them to “stay home” or “not vote” because they can’t stand a party’s nominee. Every American needs to vote as a duty.

Comment by Catriley | 2008-05-31 18:59:23

How DARE they TAKE delegates from Hillary? The people that voted for her in MI do not deserve to have their votes given to someone else.

Whose votes does the lost 4 delegates represent?

A 93 year old woman that got to vote for the chance to see a female president in the White House, after being born before women could vote?

A father of a chronically ill child who knows that if he loses his job his child will no longer be insured?

The single parent living paycheck to paycheck but wants a better life for her children, if she could only afford to go to college?

A new citizen who has escaped political persecution and corruption, who was proud to cast their first vote for their hero, Hillary Clinton?

The mother who told her little girl that she took with her to cast her vote for Hillary, that she could be whatever she wanted?

Whose votes did they take away today?

Comment by so saddened | 2008-05-31 19:36:27

they take 4 delegates that were actually voted for hillary and give them to obama. AND they give obama 55 more delegates, ALL of the uncommitted delegates. weren’t there 4 people other than hillary still in the race at the time? why not 1/4 of the 55? (or, more fairly, none, since he wasn’t on the ballot, by his own choice).

oh, i know….because they decided long ago that the nominee would be obambi and this is just one of the many, many actions they’ve taken to make that happen. they thought some of their earlier actions would be enough to get her out – moving south carolina up, taking away fl and mi’s delegates, etc. when that didn’t work, they just kept it up. this is just the latest salvo.

even if they had given hillary ALL of her fl and mi delegates today and not given obambi any that he didn’t actually earn, it wouldn’t have mattered, because the momentum he got from being the so-called delegate leader for the past 3 months, which he only got because fl and mi weren’t counted, got him an actual delegate lead. but today’s action just adds insult to injury.

the party should just put out a memo that says ha, ha, ha, you stupid voters. you thought you had a choice. obambi is it and screw you!

i say screw them.

lifelong dem, from generations of dem. not any more!

they think we’ll be back. i won’t. and i hope noone will.

This sucks, but here are the take-away positives:

1. Cause to go to Denver, baby!
2. Popular vote now gets counted!

Hillary is now the popular vote leader because Michigan and Florida primaries have been recognized, and tomorrow she will be officially the popular vote leader even without counting Michigan.

So take that and shove it RBC. We got exactly what we needed for the time being.

Denver or BUST. Got that?

Comment by PaganPower | 2008-05-31 19:01:59

Estimate w/IA, NV, ME, WA

Comment by Susaninbosque | 2008-05-31 19:22:02

Ya know, this was my take-away, absolutely but it is still sooo painful. I just did not want to really witness that even though I knew it was coming. And I smell money, of course. Thanks, Uppity – good to hear the folks who just decide to trash democracy.

I am just amazed that these people don’t recognize that this looks and feels like 2000 when a “decision” just wiped out voters. But in some way it does remind me of 2004 when Kerry would not stand up and fight for us like he could have and should have.

My husband just pointed out that how so many of the folks in Obama’s cabal are just people we never liked.

Comment by beebop | 2008-05-31 19:39:46

But some of the people in that cabal are people we VOTED for … Kerry, Kennedy, Edwards ….
and they are forever as tainted by what happened today as Obama as far as I am concerned. They are just as complicit as if they made the decision. They are traitors to the Democratic party. Or, the Democratic party that was.

Comment by M | 2008-05-31 20:09:47

Agree with you T.Darlin. Agreed, there is a chess move being made here. Perhaps this was just the ostensible reason HRC needed to keep up the fight. It was quite a moment when Ickes spoke about the credentials committee.

The one question that I have about this day’s activities — at least what we saw had to do with the AA committee member who spoke after Ickes. Did anyone get what he was saying? It was outrage about something, but I didn’t get it. He was steamed.

Which is why Hillary MUST NOT WITHDRAW. She doesn’t have to campaign anymore after this week. But she MUST NOT WITHDRAW. She MUST be available for the delegates to vote for come August.

I wonder what other lifelong connections Obama will have cut by then.

Comment by Strawberry | 2008-05-31 19:11:46

Obama had to throw his church of 20 years under the bus today, ya got that? Most people in the US attend some sort of church. They will see him as a man with no integrity who joined a church to gain the black vote or a man with no loyalty to those closest to him…or both. He cannot win in November against a man who spent 5 years in a POW camp for his country.

Comment by It's Not Me | 2008-05-31 19:12:18

The Super Delegates decide who the nominee is AT THE CONVENTION and not until. They can all change their minds between now and August, so stay tuned.

Hillary knows she will win this. I’m sticking with Hillary to the end.

That’s what I call Hope and Change, alright.

Comment by CognitiveDissonance | 2008-05-31 19:09:11

Incidentally, one positive thing about today. Now that FL and MI delegates are being seated – (whether fairly or not is another matter) – no one can any longer say that the popular vote of those 2 states don’t count. They do. No one can any longer say that Hillary is not ahead in the popular vote. She is.

Comment by Skiron | 2008-05-31 19:49:01

Too bad the popular vote is only one metric, and not the even the most important one, involved in determining the winner of the nomination. The pledged delegate count carries a lot more weight than the pop. vote.

It is ridiculous. A candidate who is not even on the ballot allocated not only all uncommitted votes but also some from the candidate who won those dates. Go Hillary all the way to Denver and then to the White House. We are all behind you.

Comment by anna shane | 2008-05-31 19:10:54

It’ll get uglier, Barack will announce himself as the nominee while voters are voting in PR, and the ugly posts against her will be increased. He can’t win, in my opinion, far too much baggage, and not a nice enough person, but it’ll be blamed on me and those like me. My only comfort is that she’s appealing this unbelievable decision. Talk about respecting rules, my mind begs for reason. This is a bad day for Americans. It likely means we’ll have four more years of war, no universal health insurance, and a bunch of know-nothings taking us on the crooked talk express. Shame on my party for again giving us a candidate that can’t win. After November I’ll be available for a third party that puts forth candidates in the mode of Hillary.

Hillary, make them give it to him and show themselves, please appeal and let this sad process see the light of day. Don’t give up, force then to show their sleazy stuff.

Comment by beebop | 2008-05-31 19:26:37

No. What it means is that the Democratic party thinks so little of its rank and file that they are willing to risk the White House for a fiction writer. Welcome President McCain — far better than the knuckle draggers from Chicago I feel. I certainly am not willing to risk the safety of this nation on this lying, cheating, thieving little “d” democrat.

Ob just quit the Church. Talk about timing, trying to step on the Mich and Fl story, but adding to the flames, he pours on more gas.

Rezko being found guilty next week will push the Super D’s to Hillary, as she is the only one that can beat McCain in November.

The Democratic Party can now be unified. I bet they rename it the Obamacratic Party. Of course, it’s also going to be a much smaller unified party, as millions of true Democrats become Independents.

Anyone who thinks that giving delegates to a candidate the people (remember them – the people?) did not vote for is fair should immediately be removed from public office and thrown in jail for treason.

I’m disgusted with the whole incompetent DNC.

The only good news was him throwing his Church under the bus. And he did it on Saturday, right before Sunday services tomorrow. What an asshole! And on First Sunday where congregations tend to be huge for Communion. (I don’t even go to church and I know this.)

He should’ve waited till Monday. But his campaign outsmarted themselves trying to upstage the Rules & Bylaws disgusting decisions and keep the protesters off the news.

But who knows? He’s cock sure of the AA community, I’ll say that. And I’m sure they will try to downplay it outwardly. But trust me, he has sown the seeds of doubt in their minds. He won’t get too many more chances. And when AAs turn, it’s going to be one of the more uglier spectacles you’ve ever seen. But Barky Biracial wouldn’t know this seeing as he wasn’t raised among us. But he will learn!

Look at the republicans, and the war.

And when faced with a situation where problem solving skill needs to be applied, the cheater is helpless.

As well as laughed at.

One thing folks, according to the rules of the Democratic Party, votes count towards delegate seating, therefore by the Rules Commitee giving Obama all the uncommitted and mail in delegates, this according to the rules gives all those votes to Obama, thus the count for Obama is increased by the 260,000 who voted uncommitted plus the 30,000 uncounted mailed in votes.

The Rules commitee ruling for Michigan gave Obama Chicago style non-existing votes, as that is the only way a delegate count can be awarded is by votes for a certain candidate! So Obama’s new name is Obama-Uncommitted now!

This is illegal!

Dear Ms. Pelosi:
You have the nerve to ask me for money?
No, I will not support an organization that has either passively or ACTIVELY engaged in sexist, even misogynistic behavior. I will not support a Party that is ramming the less qualified candidate down our throats by demeaning and diminishing a far superior candidate, AND which seeks to disenfranchise over 2.2 millions voters. After the appalling decision of the Rules and Bylaws Committee today, I will not be sending you a penny this election cycle. In order to help your chosen candidate, Barack Obama, you reduced Florida’s votes to half and took away some of Hillary Clinton’s Michigan votes? And gave the rest to Senator Obama instead of the intended “Uncommitted”? Do you want money from a Democrat? Try your precious Obama supporters, the ones who wrote or said these filthy remarks:

I’m OK with it. I’m a HUGE believer in that the truth reveals itself. This proposal was so clearly unfair to Hillary that it will do absolutely nothing but confirm in people’s minds that the Democratic Party has a huge problem on its hands. This is not a good time to vote Democrat.

That will serve only to make sure that Hillary will be President in 4 years.

They may steal the nomination, and that’s how the public will see it. It’s clear as crystal now.

If they had proposed a plan that gave him a portion of the uncommitted but no take-away from her?

That would have been far worse. That could have been debatable.

This proposal, however, is so out-of-line, however, that Obama is now tarnished with it.

He’ll never gain the momentum back, folks. You can’t threaten with “blood in the street” and steal Annie Oakley’s delegates and get the majority of Americans to think you’re an OK guy.

Ain’t happening for Obama. Give him enough rope, and he hung himself.

Comment by TeakWoodKite | 2008-05-31 20:05:40

Write to Hillary and ask her to run as an independent before it’s too late to organize. She can win this with a strong ticket. The Democratic Party is rewarding men behaving badly. Men behaving badly should not be rewarded.

The new coalition = UNDEMOCRATIC PARTY

3rd World tactics – we might as well live in a communist country. Oh by the way, anybody research Mr. Obama and his communist connections?

The DNC are communists

Hillary is so overrated by you people.

Comment by iam0nly1 | 2008-05-31 20:13:36

I will now be referring to Obama as “Senator Clinton/Uncommitted” since that is the new name the RBC and the DNC have given to him.

I have not donated to the DNC either , but I contributed to Hillary’s campaign what I could afford til Nov. It’s not alot of money , but I still made the contribution.

I basicallly didn’t listen to all the media crap saying it was all over and for Hillary to bow out. And then the hysteria over her RFK statement,I still think the media used that to get her out too.

I wrote MSNBC and had a few words about Keith’s acting.

I just printed out the form from the NC State Board of Elections website and have completed it. I’ll drop it in the mail tomorrow. This 49-year-old life-long Democrat is changing her registration to “unaffiliated”.

Do it. Show Dean and Co that we AREN’T to be taken for granted.

If Obama is the nominee and is handed his scepter and crown, I WILL vote Republican for the first time ever. I can vote for John McCain in good conscience. I can not vote for Obama. He is utterly unqualified, and I resent to the core of my being what has been done to shove him down our throats.

Got those postage paid DNC envelopes? Put 25 pennies in it and send them your donation (they are charged for postage by the weight).

And bad acting at that,I sent the video to my friends, asking them if it was fake or real. They all said it was an act.

We need to organize campaigns AGAINST those so called Democrats who have blatantly been trying to anoint Obamessiah as the nominee rather than allowing the people’s choice in Hillary to win the nomination. Start petitions against these Obamaton DNC members Find pro democracy Democrats to run against them in their home districts and let these scum bags know exactly why their political careers are being ended by we the people!

Democratic Credentials Committee

Credentials Committee
Elected to chair the Credentials Committee are Alexis Herman, James Roosevelt, Jr. and Eliseo Roques-Arroyo. Alexis Herman served as U.S. Secretary of Labor from 1997 to 2001. She served as DNC Chief of Staff for Chairman Ron Brown and later was named CEO of the 1992 Democratic National Convention. Since 2005, she has served as a Co-Chair of the DNC Rules and Bylaws Committee and also served as a Co-Chair of the Commission on Presidential Nomination Timing and Scheduling. James Roosevelt, Jr. is President and CEO of Tufts Health Plan, a Massachusetts based Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) and was formerly Associate Commissioner for Retirement Policy of the Social Security Administration in the Clinton Administration. He is the chief legal counsel for the Massachusetts Democratic Party and Co-Chair of the DNC Rules and Bylaws Committee. Eliseo Roques-Arroyo, a native of Puerto Rico, served as Executive Assistant to Commonwealth of Puerto Rico Senate Minority Leader Miguel Hernandez-Agosto and to Puerto Rico Delegate to Congress Antonio J. Colorado. He is a former Executive Director of the Democratic Party of Puerto Rico and presently a member of the DNC.

The Credentials Committee is charged with coordinating issues around the selection of delegates and alternates to the Convention and will likely meet in the summer. The committee will issue a report that is the first official item of business at the Convention.

I was really upset today, until I got this info on the Credentials committee. Something good just might come of this.

Note that Alexis Herman and James Roosevelt, who were Co-Chairs today both served in the Clinton Administration and Eliseo Roques-Arroyo, I don’t know about…but Hillary is extremely popular in Puerto Rico.
Give ‘em Hell Hillary!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Stop the discrimination and prevent the party from being overtaken by COMPLETE MORONS

Calling the DNC first thing tomorrow morning, letting them know, that they lost another democrat today. I’ve got my registration card and I’m going to tear it up and return it in their postage free envelope, with a note, letting them know what I think of their undemocratic actions today. I don’t see how they could possibly justify what they did today.
