Helpful Hint to Obama Campaign Representatives: Stop Confusing Voters

Being consistent purely for its own sake can be a bad thing.  We learned this from watching President Bush, with great regularity, stubbornly refused to alter his positions even after overwhelming evidence showed his earlier stances to be flat wrong.

On the other hand, sometimes consistency is a good thing — especially for a political campaign.  I bring this up, because of two articles I recently read.  Today’s Washington Post quotes Sen. Obama as saying the following:

"We’re going to try to reach out to all her [Hillary's] supporters and tell them that we want to unify the party…. I understood that they were as inspired by her candidacy as some of my supporters are inspired by mine. They’re not alone in drawing inspiration from her campaign. My own daughters now take the possibility of a woman being president for granted."

That’s a gracious message: a positive step toward party unity.  But it’s nearly the opposite of a message that came from an Obama campaign representative a few days ago, according to The Politico:

"Obama is not, one of his senior advisers assured me Tuesday night, going to spend a lot of time in the next few months wooing Clinton
supporters whose feelings may be hurting.

I think there are always immediate feelings of disappointment and anger, Anita Dunn said. €But in the months ahead, he must appeal not just to the constituency groups who favored her in the primaries, but those he wants in the general election, and that includes independents and Republicans.€ (Politico)

Sen. Obama’s adviser’s message seemed to be that the campaign doesn’t really care about the nearly 18 million people who voted for Hillary in the primaries — a message that seems to conflict with Sen. Obama’s own words.

The mere appearance of conflicting attitudes within a campaign is what some might call "mixed signals," a natural result of which is massive confusion among millions of voters.

I wouldn’t be bringing this up if it were the first time that the Obama campaign’s representatives had seemed to get their signals crossed.  But it’s not the first time.

At the debate before Pennsylvania’s primary, for example, Sen. Obama took the high road and graciously said that Hillary Clinton’s "mis-statements" about Bosnia were not a real issue and that he refused to try to make an issue of them.

A few days later but still before Pennsylvania’s primary, according to a Slate reporter who was traveling with Obama’s campaign, Obama’s aides scheduled a media conference call to talk about Hillary’s Bosnia "mis-statements."

That was a very confusing pair of mixed-signals.

In February, Obama campaign adviser Austan Goolsbee reportedly told a Canadian official who likes NAFTA that Sen. Obama was not really as hostile to NAFTA as he sounded during campaign speeches.  That story broke some weeks after Goolsbee spoke with the Canadian official and a few days after Obama debated Hillary Clinton in the anti-NAFTA state of Ohio.

Mr. Goolsbee confused many voters, because Obama had indicated during the debate that he would threaten to back out of NAFTA if it weren’t renegotiated in a way that was more favorable to American workers.

In March, campaign adviser Samantha Power indicated that Sen. Obama wasn’t really committed to withdrawing troops from Iraq within 16 months after taking office (if he’s elected).

Ms. Power confused many voters, because Sen. Obama, himself, seemed pretty clear about wanting to withdraw troops within that time frame.

Without pummeling corpses, I think I’ve made my point.  Sometimes, Sen. Obama’s campaign representatives say things that seem very different from what Sen. Obama says.

By insisting on making statements that conflict with Sen. Obama’s, campaign representatives risk undermining the candidate’s efforts to get elected.

Republicans know (many via repeated usage) how to spot inconsistencies — and they don’t care if people call them hypocrites for shrieking about other people’s inconsistencies (or dishonesty or lack of credibility).

For that reason, I advise all of Sen. Obama’s campaign representatives to think before they speak: to make sure that they know where their candidate really stands and to try to avoid making statements (and committing acts) that clash with the candidate’s own words.

Memeorandum has commentary.

Comment by Keith | 2008-06-07 02:17:03

The tape doesn’t exist. If the event where it allegedly occurred was taped and available for sale, then there would be multiple copies available. Instead, the alleged tape happens to be in the hands of unidentified persons with motives hostile to Senator Obama which they are going to hold until just the right moment. Except they can’t help but tell various people about the existence of the tape, proving, once again, you can in fact fool a lot of the people some of the time.

Just sad….

It much appears to not be a matter of consistency. Rather, Obama is saying what he thinks his audience wants to hear. Just like gwbush. The difference being that bush had a little experience governing. Obama has none, and wants to learn while WE pay for it.

Comment by AnninCa | 2008-06-07 09:41:57

He’s never going to be consistent because he really has flip-flopped on just about everything. LOL*

There will be no consistent message from Obama about anything, other than vacuous “Yes We Can” crap.

When you pretend to be against lobby money and lie and bundle yours and refuse to let people see what’s inside, then you’re just a liar.

Liars are, by definition, inconsistent.

Other than we can count on him to be nothing but politically expedient at all times.

What happened to the “rumor” of Michelle Obama’s racist rant video? Now it seems that Larry has just devolved into sour grapes gutter sniping, and although he’s now seemed to rightly move away from the ridiculous accusations, being replaced by nasty aspersions cast at Obama doesn’t class up the joint.

Way to unite the party, Lar. Now go stick a fork in your bitterness, it’s done.

This whole everybody has to think and feel the same way is very creepy. America was founded on the principle that disagreement and dissent were not only good but in fact patriotic and necessary.

It certainly isn’t Larry’s responsibility to unite the party. That responsibility falls completely on Obama’s shoulders. If he isn’t up to the task then he will lose the GE. Fortunately for us Obama isn’t up to the task. We don’t need someone as narcissistic and stupid as Obama as president.

I know all you former Bushies need to have a God figure in your lives to give it meaning. I may be against God and religion and spirituality, but I think you guys are in desperate need for an intervention with a real religion. So go to your local pentecostal church, pray like the dickens, get saved, get baptised, speak in tongues and get some real meaning in your lives if you can’t get it on your own.

If you want to worship a god why not go all out and worship the real thing? Or do you all consider yourselves much to smart for that? Then after scratching that itch you should revisit your political ideals and see that putting faith in a politician like you would God isn’t such a smart thing to do because it makes you highly susceptible to manipulation.

Comment by sjl106 | 2008-06-07 09:38:06

obama and his goons are the ones that divided us, with lots of help, there is no way he will unite us. Never in my life would I vote for the sleaze and the sleazier that invaded the blogs the media and the democratic party. Sorry kiddies for the good of my country this cannot stand. As a history buff, IMO, the actions throughout are similar to the rise of facism and communism. The similarities of the rise of Mussolini, Hitler, the Bolsheviks (won’t claim Stalin, he was low key in his rise to power but part of the Bolsevik revolution)all the player, attitudes, and behaviors seem to have been reincarnated. I guess people should have paid more attention to the Hillary camps chronological map of when obama first began his plan of becoming President. Kindergarten in Indonesia where his mother moved him with his stepfather, I read an article (won’t go find it, it was a while ago)that his stepfather was kicked out of the U.S. for his communist activities and they only got more prominent while back in Indonesia and his mother had the same beliefs.

I posted this on another article but it is very important to me so please forgive me for posting it again. I just kind of feel like someone out there must have had a smililar experience. Maybe even Hillary herself if she is reading (Which I am sure she does) So here goes:

I have a dream every night before I go to bed, I am kind of half awake. It is about Hillary and she is an eagle but her upper torso is a woman kind of like a harpy.

And she has boobs but it is not terribly erotic because she is kind of a geezer, but she is still beautiful and majestic.

Anyway in this dream I am always dressed in bearskin, but I ma riding on a polar bear and I have huge muscles. And I am crying and Hillary swoops down and wipes a tear from my eye with her wing.

And although I am awake I am not touching myself or anything.

But I think this is Hillary’s way of telling me that she hates all of the Obamabots as much as we do.

And I really feel like somewhere out there i am really having some sort of psychic bond with her. Does anybody else here have that dream at night?

I can never quite figure out why politicians lie so much when we have so much access to media now. In the old days politicians probably could have gotten away with this, but today there is simply no way. What is so strange though is that politicians are probably much more corrupt and much more brazen about lying because people are less likely to hold it against them. Today concepts like integrity, good will, justice, standing up to your word and so much more are completely lost. It is sad, really.

If you want the truth about this election, sometimes we have to read the foreign press:

Quotes from an Australian artcile tited:

Public celebrations hide private consternation over the new nominee

Most analysts believe Obama has to win at least two of Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania to get into the White House. He lost all three to Clinton in the primaries, by sizeable margins. More troubling for Democrats, Obama is doing considerably worse than Clinton in opinion polls against McCain in all three states and losing to him in two.

Unfortunately for Clinton, the Democratic grandees who comprise the super-delegates ignored her electability argument. They feared the backlash, particularly from all those new young Democrats energised by Obama, that would surely have come had they overturned the pledged delegate count.

But that does not mean they are not concerned about his electability. Behind closed doors they are worried sick by Obama’s poor showing in those states that have thwarted Democratic presidential ambitions in recent elections.

Comment by It's Not Me | 2008-06-07 08:21:52

They should be worried sick because he cannot win Ohio, FL. OR PA.

What a bunch of cowards. They’re afraid of riots, so they choose the LOSING candidate? Yeah boy, that makes sense, doesn’t it? Kowtow out of fear? They deserve to lose and I will enjoy watching every minute of it.

Obama Pod Encounters of the Third Kind
Many of us having creepy stories to tell about Obama Pod Encounters. Scientists have now divided these encounters into three kinds defined as below:

Obama Pod Encounter of the First Kind (OPE1): The witness goes to a website run by a pod, sees a pod on television. This is classified as a safe encounter. Though many doctors now believe that repeated exposure may lead an otherwise sane person to have some mental distress. Limit time exposed to less than a few minutes a week.

Obama Pod Encounter of the Second Kind (OPE2): Indirect contact is made by a Pod. Places like this site often experience OPE2. Most are easy to spot and pose little danger. A comment is made that includes the words or phrases: “She’s a bitch”, “You’re a Republican”, “Baby boomers need to die!” “Clinton is a racist!” or just plain, “racist!”
However, some are more subtle. One recent comment here started out sane and, if not well reasoned, was at least calm but by the second paragraph this was dropped in “God has ordained that Obama be President.” Beware of these weasels. They intend to draw you into a fight. Take up the fight – but always start on offense. Demand explanations of Obama’s past and voting record. This often acts like Raid on roaches. Befuddled the Pod may try to avoid the assault by saying “But Hillary did…” Do not take the bait. Demand a real accounting of their candidate. Usually the Pod becomes confused, spins for a minute like a small dog about to take a shit, and then retreats. It may take some practice to stay on the offensive. But stay there you must.

Obama Pod Encounters of the Third Kind (OPE3): Face to face interaction. Many of us have unwittingly had these in our day to day lives. A pleasant greeting on the street turns into a crazy scene. I suggest something like this as a way to defend yourself:

Regular person: Hey – how are you? Nice to see you

Pod: Great. The election is crazy this year isn’t it?

RP: Yes. Hard to believe what’s going on.

Pod: I know. Isn’t Obama great, though?

Pause to asses. Check for escape routes.

RP: Well, actually I support Clinton.

The Pod’s face will visibly tighten. You have now been branded a racist in the Pod’s mind.

P: (said with condescension – as to a child with the gimp leg) Oh. Really. You know the Clinton’s are racist.

RP: That’s not true. Where did you get an idea like that?

P: (Now becoming angry) Obama said so!

RP: Well, I think otherwise.

(the phrase “I think” will confuse the pod. This is a foreign concept to them – the moment of befuddlement gives an opening)

RP: Tell me – Why do you support Obama?

P: He gives me hope. I feel good when I see him and think about him. Don’t you want hope?

RP: I have lots of hope already. Plenty of things inspire me. My kids, beautiful art, great writing, people helping in Darfur and New Orleans. All sorts of things are hopeful. Hillary is quite inspirational, too.

The Pod may exhibit manic behavior at this point. The ears pull back and the jaw becomes tight. The mind of the Pod races now – becoming somewhat reptilian. They may blurt out:

P: No you hate black people!

RP: That’s absurd.

P: Nothing is hopeful except Barrack!

RP: He is not hopeful. He’s scary.

P: What, what, what?? You evil racist dog! Change! We must change! You must be for Obama now or or

RP: Or what?

P: Supreme Court! McCain!

RP: I am not afraid of those things. Speak in sentences, please.

P: No! you bad! Barrack good! You most stupid! Iraq! They don’t have maps! Such as! Hillary Bad! Bitch! Bosnia! Bad!

The pod may go on like this for a while. If you are feeling brave you may pursue with:

RP: But WHY do you support him other than he gives you hope?

P: You don’t understand shit, you racist bitch! I am going to call…someone… on you…and then…you suck. You Republican troll!

Probably best to walk away at this point. If you continue on the offensive they can do no harm to you. But most are now beyond help from a lay person. If you truly care for the Pod call an Obama Pod Intervention Team. If not, let it go.

In the coming months we should all prepare for Obama Pod encounters

Well are you OBOTs ready for some real bad news. I am about to deliver something you never wanted to hear. “THE WHITIE TAPES ARE REAL”. How do you know that for a fact. Well I have talked to that person on the phone. How do you know how bad it is.

I listen to about 2 minutes on the phone. I heard Obama’s wife call Bill Clinton every dirty word there is. I also heard her say “the only reason his wife stuck with him was so she could be a senator. What a ho she is” The person that has a copy of that tape will not release it until the Tuesday before the Election in Nov. He want to destroy Obama, Rev Wright, and Louis Farrahkan. I have begged to get it release early but no way will this person do that. So what we do here really won’t matter in the long run. Obama is toast and I pray Hillary will not have anything to do with him. I will continue to try to get this person to release this tape early.

She was a lifelong Democrat, she said, a donor and a volunteer for the party. But, watching the race with a “mixture of shock, disgrace, and disgust,” she was appalled at the leadership’s failure to defend Hillary Clinton from the sexism that she believes bolstered Barack Obama’s campaign. “Now I have a message for Howard Dean and the DNC,” she said into a microphone, acid in her voice. “I’m not your sweetie!”

My brain is still puzzled by the way ,,,over 90% of blacks have supported Obama just because he is black.(and thats not racist ) (but WV,KY,SD,PR are racist who voted 60-65% for hillary)

The way the Obama campaign and media tried to label the Clinton camp as racists with no evidence but just memo from obama camp == Unbelievabl

Michelle Obama being asked if Hillary was the nominee would she support her and her reply “I’d have to think about that”.

Pelosi, Reid, Dodd, Kennedy, Kerry ,edwards, richardson and their big mouths.

Pelosi was saying== the person with the popular vote should be our nominee and can not be overturned by the SD,S ,THEN later saying who ever has the most delegates.
Brazile and Dean and the entire DNC screwing us over so they could select MR WAFFLES for us. The CRAZY MEDIA PUSHING for Hillary to get out of the race.

Obama flipping Hillary off after the debate and claiming he was just scratching.

No candidate in history has ever before been asked to leave the race. As a matter of fact many took it to the convention floor, for one, Kennedy.

The media and their vile sexist garbage, outright lies and deletion of truth in reporting.

I will never vote for Obama, he is an anti-American, terrorist lover. I will work my ass off to make sure OBAMA LOOSES. .

I will vote FOR JOHN MCCAIN . My country comes first to me, everything else is secondary.

It’s not confusion. It’s flip-flopping. They do a lot of that. What about Obama’s united Jerusalem comment and his quick flip-flop on what he said at AIPAC this last Wednesday?

At the AIPEC conference, he said: “Jerusalem will remain the capital of Israel, and it must remain undivided.” The remark received entusiastic applause from 7,000 attendees.

But a campaign adviser clarified Thursday that Obama believes “Jerusalem is a final status issue, which means it has to be negotiated between the two parties” as part of “an agreement that they both can live with.” Facing criticism from Palestinians, Obama acknowledged that the status of Jerusalem will need to be negotiated in future peace talks. In an interview with CNN, Obama said: “Well, obviously, it’s going to be up to the parties to negotiate a range of these issues. And Jerusalem will be part of those negotiations,”

The Jews better be paying attention. Why does Hamas back Obama? AIPEC should remember Rev Wright, Obama’s spiritual advisor, has said: “Israel Is A Dirty Word.”

Obama got the nomination because of the superdelegates
who supported him and turned their backs on their states and Hillary.

The Democrats need to erase all of the superdelegates and find a solution on electing a nominee.
in November he won’t have the superdelegates to cover his back. My vote is going to Mccain.

Praise Bill Clinton, Do Not Bury Him

Digby wrote this a few days ago:

Whatever happens, Bill Clinton will still be the 42nd president of the United States and the first two term Democrat since Roosevelt. That’s never going to change. Democrats should ask themselves, once the smoke has cleared, if it’s really a good idea to discredit his accomplishments. However you personally may feel about him, there is value in a popular ex-president remaining popular. Political value. (See: Reagan legacy project.) The question is what they are valued for.

I see the Clintons as warrior chiefs against the hardcore conservative movement machine that nearly crippled this country (but which may have just run its course after drifting into decadence and hubris.) But, at the time of the movement’s greatest power and influence, no one took more crap or was more deft at beating them back. I, for one, am grateful to both of them for taking a nearly unbelievable amount of heat from both the media and the Republicans during that era — and surviving.

More . . .

Bill Clinton is in the pantheon of popular ex-presidents who continues to do important work on global initiatives. Hillary Clinton is a Senator and historic breakthrough presidential candidate who won more primary votes than any candidate in history aside from Barack Obama. Al Gore is a global leader and Nobel prize winner. On the other side of that epic battle, Newt Gingrich is a Fox News commentator, writing reviews of mystery thrillers on Amazon. Tom Delay is a private citizen facing indictment. Half of the social conservatives who unctuously criticized Clinton’s behavior have been run out of town on morals charges. Fox News is sinking in the ratings faster than George W. Bush.

The Clintons didn’t single handedly defeat the conservatives, but they fought them off valiantly when the movement was at its pinnacle and they deserve some credit for that. It’s hard to believe that we could have been worse off if they hadn’t, but believe me, we would have.

What Digby Said. Any chance any other A-Lister will write something like this? Do not hold your breath.

My reading of those “mixed signals” is that it was/is/will be a definite planned strategy.

It a 3-pronged approach:

Firstly, a safe assumption they may have made is that only a few focussed, thorough and committed persons will be accessing info from different sources, keeping track on an issue and comparing & critiquing the content of the messages.

Most may only hear one version of the message.

Secondly, the henchmen do the massacre jobs, so that Mr. Hope (in their estimation) remains with no blood on his shirt.

{remember all he has is image; so that has to be protected at all cost}

Thirdly, Mr. Hope then is associated only with pleasantries, sweet nothings, and an occasional rant, so that he may look/sound lil aggressive.

That way, all those persons who need emotional
spikes, will more easily get drawn in at the talk/mobfests, and leave feeling high, as there is no content to challenge them intellectually….

So, it plays out just the way they want it.

All these sprinklings of subtle “compliments” being aired in the last few days, in my book, cannot be genuine and are not aimed towards her…..but aimed at her supporters,……those who may be too naive and innocent to recognize treachery and the various forms it can take.

I think your assessment is dead on.

Is this the same Obama campaign that scoffed at Hillary’s white working class voters, that racist voters will vote for McCain anyways….

I think a lot of the problem lies in Obama’s “Mitt problem”. He says anything to please the people he is speaking to at any given time, regardless of what he has established as his position on a subject. Also, some of his lackeys are so arrogant and/or brainwashed that they believe they can blather out the unvarnished, unlovely truth and it won’t hurt The Golden One. They believe he has been chosen, that it is his time. No matter what they say, no matter how they insult Hillary supporters or frighten indies and Repubs, HE IS DESTINED TO WIN.

One of his refrains, “our time has come.”

Whose time has come? AAs can hear that their time has come, latte liberals hear it theirs, money backers know it’s theirs. But after reading a couple of articles in atimes, I think “our” time means foreigners or any one who isn’t white. I don’t think he likes generic, typical white people, and neither do the white latte liberals. They think typical white people are racist, and that they aren’t. I think that in Obama’s new America, white people might be excused if they can find something to hyphenate their identity with, like being Jewish or Greek or anything but white. No hyphens, no respect. Not fully human.

Annie,

Yes, “our time has come” could apply to anyone. And people, being rather self absorbed, would tend to insert their own particular group into the sentence when they interpret it.

I think that’s precisely why Obama kept such statements so vague.

Deb…his recent mixed message on Israel is a perfect example of what you’re talking about. It’s embarassing how often he does this.

Why people want to support someone who can’t figure out his own position on things is beyond me.

Ann,

I agree but didn’t bring up Jerusalem because I didn’t want to bludgeon the corpse.

I don’t think people do intend to support someone who can’t figure out his own positions. I think the media has largely hidden from the public the fact that Obama is inconsistent, self-contradicting, and hasn’t figured out his own positions.

GRRRRRR — I just finished reading today’s lies in the NY Times- Gloria (traitor) Steinem says — “oh no most women will not vote McCain — Maybe a few of them will write in Hillary, but no way will they vote McCain.” Ettu Brute.

I never did feel comfortable with that woman — So much is starting to make sense now — I really get what “Elitist” means, and it’s not a pretty thing.

I heard someone on the radio speaking that because Hillary has 20 million in campaign debt the superdelegates believe that people are not really still behind her. Maybe if all of her supporters (18 million) would send her at least $5.00 she could pay off the debt. And if this tape or anything else surfaces about Obama, they would feel more inclined that people are still behind her and throw her their support. Hillary 08 or McCain
