My Response to Emily’s List’s E-Mail

SusanUnPC’s Note: This is another in our continuing series of expressions written by our readers at NoQuarterUSA.net. I am accepting more reader POVs, including arguments to present to the Democratic Party, how we can nominate Hillary Clinton, your concerns about Barack Obama, or whatever you wish to “get off your chest.” Submit to susanunpc at gmail dot com (MUSTS: include a title and username/pseudonym).

ALSO of note: While I prepared this submission for publication, I searched for the URL to Emily’s List. At the top of my search results, I saw this statement as the group’s mission: “Supporting pro-choice Democratic women running for congress and governor.” WOMEN! Not sexist men! WOMEN! HELLO?! There are hundreds of WOMEN nationwide running for office in 2008. Support THOSE WOMEN, not the sexist Barack Obama! Good god almighty. (Enough — I apologize for hijacking Ellen4Hill’s post. I just had to get that out of my system.)

This was my first, terse e-mail response to the letter immediately below. My second, longer rebuttal e-mail is beneath the Emily’s List — the e-mail that compelled me to write to this influential fundraising group:

How DARE you ask me for money to get that unvetted, inexperienced, insulting nobody nobama of a politician into office?

MILLIONS of us will be voting for John McCain in the fall election and there is nothing you or anyone else can do about it.

It’s too late. The DNC and its gang of thugs are criminal and should be sent to jail.

– Ellen4Hill

This is the e-mail that Emily’s List sent to its full membership last week, and which compelled me to write two e-mails:

From: Ellen R. Malcolm, President, Emily’s List
Subject: Hillary and Barack

For months we have watched two extraordinary, history-making Democratic candidates battle it out for the presidential nomination. Sen. Barack Obama and Sen. Hillary Clinton competed in every state, unleashing a tidal wave of enthusiasm and support.

Hillary Clinton has honored all women with her historic campaign. She stood up against all odds and harsh criticism with courage, grace, and dignity. At every turn in this long journey she has filled me with tremendous pride.

And now that it is over, I wholeheartedly congratulate Barack Obama. What a triumph for our new leader! He has inspired millions of Americans and shown that he is more than ready to take on John McCain. [continued below]

From: Ellen R. Malcolm, President, Emily’s List
Subject: Hillary and Barack

[continued]

While women still face serious hurdles in reaching the highest levels of elected office, Hillary has laid to rest any doubts about whether a woman has what it takes to run for president. She showed Americans and the world that she has the strength, intelligence, determination, and passion to handle the enormous responsibilities of the presidency, including those of commander-in-chief. When the media predicted her doom, she never faltered. In every debate she was eloquent and persuasive. Her resilience under the harsh national spotlight will make it easier for every woman candidate who follows her.

Voters in every state and territory were drawn to Hillary’s message of progressive change, and they turned out in force, giving her almost 18 million votes — more than any presidential primary candidate in history. She emerges from this campaign an even more powerful national leader. And I know she will use that power to help Democrats, including Sen. Obama, win, and to make a profound difference on issues like health care reform, energy independence, and economic policy.

As I’ve spoken to EMILY’s List members, especially recently, I know we have experienced this primary from different perspectives. Those who supported Sen. Obama are tremendously exhilarated that he is our nominee. I respect your choice and congratulate you for being part of an historic campaign.

Those of us who have been wholehearted supporters of Sen. Clinton feel disappointment and sadness, even anger, that this opportunity to elect a fine candidate and the first woman president is passing us by. So many EMILY’s List members put their all into this campaign — money, yes, but also time and energy traveling to primary states, working phone banks, and canvassing precincts. My heart is with you, as I am working through my own emotional turmoil. I fervently believe that this anger and grief will subside, leaving me with a deep sense of pride at what Hillary has accomplished for women. But I have not yet reached that point in my journey, and I know many of you feel the same way.

EMILY’s List members, like all Democrats, are experiencing varying emotions — but we are unified in our determination to undo the damage created by George W. Bush and the Republicans. I am confident that our party will unify as well, and come together to take the White House in November. And, once again, EMILY’s List will unleash the political power of women to help Democrats win at every level in 2008 so we can begin to rebuild a progressive America.

The differences between Sens. Obama and McCain dwarf the nuanced policy differences between Obama and Clinton. We can never forget what John McCain stands for: continuation of the war in Iraq, minimal changes on health care, economic policy that rests on tax breaks for corporations and the wealthy, and a steadfast determination to overturn Roe vs. Wade. Electing John McCain is simply perpetuating the policies of George W. Bush. For the country’s sake, we cannot let that happen.

EMILY’s List has important work to do to help Democrats take back the White House — but to create the change our country so desperately needs, we must also build working progressive majorities in the states and in the Congress. EMILY’s List has endorsed more than two dozen strong women candidates for House, Senate, and governor, and dozens more running for state office. And we are executing our biggest WOMEN VOTE! project ever, to mobilize the women voters who will ensure victory for our candidates and Democrats up and down the ticket — from the state House to the White House.

As always, thank you for your support and your commitment to our country.

Please continue to be an active and generous member of EMILY’s List as we work to unleash the power of women candidates and women voters to create change.

Let us join together to build a mighty political force that will win in November.

Warmest regards,

Ellen R. Malcolm
President

NOW, my second e-mail to Emily’s List:

To Emily’s List:

This is a more considered follow-up response to your email plea for party unity after Hillary’s *loss* to Barak Obama. My earlier email was quickly written in the heat of the moment and came totally from anger.

Now that I have cooled down, and am thinking rationally, I am even MORE determined than ever in my conviction that Barak Hussein Obama must never be President of the United States. I don’t think you realize that this is not just disappointment and sadness, as you so gently characterize it, but total and utter OUTRAGE, that the nomination was stolen from Hillary and given to Barak Obama for the sake of what…political expediency? To bring more money and more voters into the Democratic party?

To purposely sweep aside an ultra-qualified presidential candidate who beat McCain in all the polls, who won all the swing states, who captured the Hispanic vote and won the popular vote by 300,000 votes is simply astounding. Plus, to watch my beloved Democratic party stand aside and do nothing and in some cases, actively contribute to the vile sexism that was heaved at Hillary every single day of this campaign, has wounded me deeply, and millions of other Democrats like me…actively hemmoraging wounds too deep to heal by shallow, disingenuous calls for party unity. It is much, much too late for that.

There is much more at stake in the November election than a few Supreme Court appointments. And please, don’t threaten me with the overturn of Roe vs. Wade. What the DNC seems to have forgotten is that we core Democrats are moderate. I belong to what is left of the base of our party, hard working, faith based and middle class…the party of FDR.  Frankly, I shudder at the thought of a nominee who is intimately connected with the old Chicago political bosses and who used very questionable tactics to have his adversary’s name taken off the ballot in Illinois so he could become a Senator.

I quake at the thought of a man who sat in the pews of a Christian church for over 20 years, headed by Jeremiah Wright, a racist, hate-mongering, individual who the presumptive nominee named as one of his trusted spiritual mentors. This man presided over Obama’s marriage ceremony, baptized his children and gave him advice for over two decades. Not to mention the other two questionable characters, Father Michael Pfleger and Rev. James Meeks, who completed his trio of spiritual mentors. The presumptive nominee’s associations with the now convicted *Tony* Rezko, who is serving time in the federal pen, also raised my eyebrows, to say the least.

But most of all, I can’t sleep at night wondering how soon after he becomes president, if we should be so unfortunate, that Barak Obama will sit down “without precondition”, as he promised in a debate with Hillary, with the notorious, despotic leaders of some of the most brutal regimes on the planet.  Here’s a man who won’t even wear a flag lapel pin or place his hand over his heart when saying the pledge of allegiance. How can I possibly trust him to have the good of this country in mind when he is making his presidential decisions?

I am an American first and a Democrat second. My vote cannot be bought or stolen away from me. I, and millions of other voters just like me, are deserting the Democratic party in droves. Not one cent of my money will go to help elect Barak Obama. He will lose this election to John McCain, who at least is a decent, honorable, humble and experienced man. The DNC should have anticipated this scenario months and months ago. The writing was on the wall. I cannot unite with a Democratic party that has been taken over by thugs and infiltrated with ultra left-winged liberals…not now, not ever.

And I’m not the only one. I daresay that a sizeable chunk of those 18 million people who so enthusiastically cast their vote for Hillary feel the same way.

The only thing I regret is that the day after Barak Obama loses the election to McCain, the DNC, the media and the political pundits will be laying all the blame at the feet of…

Hillary Rodham Clinton.

God save us.

Sincerely,

I cast two primary votes for Hillary — not because I’m an Israel firster but because I remember the good years between 1992 and 2000. Now, however, I will happily vote for Barak Obama in the general election. By the way, this blog has become totally boring. There are entirely too many Israel firsters posting here. If you, the minority, want to vote for McCain, go right ahead. Obama will still win in November. You can count on it!

I wish to invite anyone and everyone to send this superdelegate (Wayne Kenny) an email about the fact that you will not vote for Obama whether Hillary endorsed Obama or not.

wayne@dpo.org

This guy was very rude to me, but if everyone could just be nice to him and let him know that the dems through the Presidency away, that would be great.

He does not believe people will go against clinton to vote for McCain.

Can you please show him otherwise?

Thanks!

Told him the nomination was stolen from Hillary and that I will be voting for McCain.

Comment by Monet | 2008-06-27 13:42:14

My email to Mr. Kenny:

Dear Mr. Kenny,

I’ve voted for the Democrat candidate in the past six presidential elections. Twice I thought the Democrat candidate was the better choice, the rest of the time I was voting against the Republican candidate because I believed his policies would harm the nation more. I wasn’t wrong.

I’m a well educated (law degree, cum laude) woman. I don’t base my vote on issues emotional issues like abortion or religion. While my political beliefs are closer to the Democratic party’s on education, health care, civil liberties, etc…, I realize that our nation isn’t ready for universal health care, is too frightened to restore our civil liberties and no one wants to pay for or do the hard work required to overhaul our education system. While it would be nice in January to have a president who would address those issues and lay the groundwork for improving our education system, bringing about universal health care, restoring the Constitution, etc…, they’re not the issues that have become significant to me. Nor is the war in Iraq an issue for me. I’ve been against the war from the start, I never believed Iraq had womd and thought an invasion would result in an Iraqi civil war. I was correct. Pulling our troops out now will only result in making the Middle East more unstable. While I want the war to end as soon as possible, I also realize we can’t leave Iraq in a worse position than we found it. A candidate claiming he’ll withdrawal troops soon after taking office, will not get my vote - for one, I’ll consider it a campaign lie and if it isn’t, he has very little knowledge and will be unable to deal with the Middle East and terrorism effectively.

If I channel surf, MSNBC and CNN parade out guests to tell me that I’m going to vote for Senator Obama once I get over my widdle hurt feelings about Senator Clinton not getting the nomination. Wrong. I wasn’t supporting Senator Clinton because I thought it was time for a woman in the White House. I wasn’t supporting her because I became emotionally attached to her. I was supporting her because of my choices once it was down to Senators Obama and Clinton, she had the experience, knowledge and savvy I was looking for in a candidate. That I was closer in agreement with her than McCain on certain issues was an asset.

If Clinton had lost the nomination to Edwards, I would have no problem voting for Edwards over McCain in November. It’s Barack Obama I won’t vote for. I don’t like his policies, that is the ones I’ve been able to get some kind of grasp on. But it seems as soon as I understand his stances on issues, he does the opposite. That isn’t a good sign to me. At least with McCain, I know his views and how he is likely to react to situations and issues.

The main reason I will be voting for Senator McCain in November is that I’m disgusted with the DNC. Plain and simple. I’ve watched Karl Rove manipulate the national elections in 2000 and 2004. I was appalled then and I’m appalled now to watch Howard Dean, Nancy Pelosi, etc… pull the same manipulations during this primary season. I’ve had enough. I will not vote for any political party that lets one small faction take over and manipulate the direction of the party and which candidate will be chosen.

I’m not emotionally attached to Senator Clinton. I did not work for her campaign. I am a Michigan voter who is disgusted that the votes in my state were manipulated by the DNC to nominate a candidate who couldn’t be bothered to have his name on the primary ballot. I’m disgusted by the machinations of the DNC and will not support it. Affirming my decision to vote for Senator McCain is that the candidate the DNC has chosen to manipulate the system for is a man who is unqualified, has in recent weeks reversed his stance on issue after issue and over the past twenty years has been associated with more unsavory characters than I can remember and I have a good memory. Whether his associations were because he believed in the unsavory characters’ messages or was using them for his own personal and career gain, is irrelevant to me.

I will vote for Senator McCain, a candidate who I may disagree with on several issues but who I know has the ability to govern this nation and not continue the downward spiral we’ve been in for the past eight years. Senator Obama may claim he has a completely different political ideology than the current President, but the only difference I discern between Karl Rove’s boy who is currently occupying the Oval Office and Senator Obama is that the senator is a better public speaker. Both men are puppets for a small faction within a political party, neither have the sense, knowledge or experience to govern this nation.

I’m one of Senator Clinton’s 18 million who won’t be voting for Senator Obama. My reasons have nothing to do with sexism, racism, being overly emotionally invested in a candidate, etc… I’m fed up with manipulative, underhanded, back room deals to elect the president of the United States. This presidential election, the Republican party will be rewarded for being less dirty than the Democratic Party by my vote. Which I find difficult to believe, but that is how I will vote in November. No threats that poor children won’t have access to health care, Roe v. Wade will be overturned, women will continue to make less money than men, minimum wage won’t be increased, the Iraq war will last 100 years, etc… will sway my vote. I don’t think Senator Obama will do anything for health care, I don’t trust him to put anyone competent on the United States Supreme Court (especially when he attends a church for twenty years and claims he didn’t know the pastor’s views), increase wages, resolve our trade issues and do anything in the Middle East other than get us further entangled in hostilities there.

Email me after the election - I’ll send you a photo of my punch card, it will be a vote for McCain.

I can’t wait to see the panic when McCain is elected.

The troops are young. Women of childbearing age are young.

Obama’s voters are… wait for it… young.

There’s no sweeter revenge than a McCain presidency. It’s like a surgical strike on everyone who voted for the empty suit. “Voted for Obama? You have to stay in Iraq now. Too bad, so sad. Young woman who didn’t vote for Hillary? You’re about to find out what it’s like to have a back alley abortion :)”

We’ll become Democrats again the day AFTER election day, just as soon as Waffles and Brazile Nut are buried.

“—this is a blog for disappointed hillary supporters and not for OBAMA-CHEERLEADERS–”

An interesting, intelligent blog for disaffected Hillary supporters would contain reasoned reflection, intelligent discourse, and civil expression of that disaffection. Unfortunately, this blog is more of a venting corner in which some people unabashedly proffer the silliest of accusations (sexism, anti-semitism, etc.) on the feeblest of grounds. Some people do indeed express, in respectful ways, why they prefer Hillary to Obama, and those people are deserving of recognition. By and large, however, this blog attracts really intemperate verbiage devoid of any substance.

Comment by claribel borden | 2008-06-09 13:48:20

And you’re making that distinction?

You’re trying to control the flow of information, and you’ve exhibited no skill at analysis, whatsoever.

The arguments have been made, here, at NQ, they are self evident. You’re either ignorant, or disingenuous, or, most likely, both. A poorly reasoned thesis, such as the one you just presented, would indicate you are unable to differentiate truth, from fiction, or even determine intent.

God forbid our REAL intelligence services ever fall to your level of delusional, pseudo intellect.

Was this how the Nazi’s finally fell, too, they actually started to accept pseudo intellectual sophistry as reason?

Interesting.

You can put lipstick on the pig, but the pig is still a moron, princess.

Comment by pedro | 2008-06-09 13:59:16

How is it that you infer, from my comment, that I am “trying to control the flow of information”? I do know how to tell a stupid inference when I see one.

As for the rest of your vapid comment, a couple of remarks: You claim some arguments made here to be “self-evident.” For your education, arguments that are self-evident are not arguments at all. You also conclude, from reading one comment in a comment thread in which someone laments the tone of the blog, that the writer must be ignorant or disingenuous or both. What kind of inference is that, if not ignorant or disingenuous?

Ridiculous.

Oh my goodness, should we all recant of our naughtiness now that pedro has come to lecture us.

Take your self-righteous lecture, climb on your high-horse and take your sanctimonious self elsewhere. Who the hell are you to tell people what they can do or say?

I have a dozen reasons why I support Senator Clinton and will never, ever vote for the misogynistic, race-baiting, nominee who had to be pushed over the finish line by a corrupt DNC and Party Leadership. But I don’t have to explain them to some anonymous Obamatroll that comes to someone else’s house to pee on the carpet.

I have a long history of posting comments on the internet under this handle, which, as it turns out, is my first name. (More exactly, one of two first names. In Latin America, we usually are given two names, and the concept of first name doesn’t translate very well into that setting. I have two given names and two last names. And yes, I am an immigrant.) Some of the places where I show up if you google comments threads are Left2Right (a blog by philosophers), crookedtimber.org, and volokh.com.

Incidentally, I do wish I were Jewish. I have all sorts of personal issues with my “identity”, but those are personal issues. Jewish mathematicians dominate my field of expertise, as they do many fields, and I am sucker for klezmer music. As an atheist, however, converting is not an option. Too bad.

So you think I am actually part of the Obama campaign? I pray not. I would never be part of a political campaign. It’s the sort of thing that doesn’t suit me. I am a professional mathematician whose first name is indeed Pedro. If you read the comments thread of “The New Culture War, Part I” in this very blog, you’ll see my first participation in this blog. I explained there why I supported Obama over Hillary, and trixta and someone else responded with thoughtful comments and counterpoints. That was a good exchange. Most often, however, rudeness is what rules this blog’s comments threads, it seems. Too bad.

You ego is showing. You don’t have to come to this blog to insult people. I think someone needs to tell Obama that many of his supporters are fanning the fire of division. I wonder if he knows this.It is people like you who need to learn to be civil and stay away from this blog if you can’t be. And perhaps you need to need to reflect on what it means to reflect. Part of that process has to do with feelings.

Comment by Megan | 2008-06-12 06:50:32

Fair enough Elizabeth.

I think the problem though is that most people don’t take this blog seriously, or its posters. You have Larry and Susan pushing the Whitey tape on anyone who’s buying, and then having to retreat with their tails between their legs when it turns out not to exist.

You have a quarter of the posters here saying Obama is too liberal, a quarter saying he’s too conservative, a quarter who are incapable of discussing anything without bringing race into it, and the rest are either trolls or completely crazy.

You have Larry and his sad attempts at using youth slang in his posts (see the one today about Obama’s “peeps” for example).

The only reason Hillary Clinton hasn’t thrown you all under the fastest bus she can find is because she doesn’t want people to know that it exists. An expose of this site would hit the media like the Jeremiah Wright tapes.

Why on earth do you think that sexism is a “silly” charge to level? I cannot think you’ve ever experienced it if you are unable to see that it happened (and is still happening) in constantly, everywhere, and with glee. It takes little imagination to see that threatening to take a woman behind the barn to either beat or kill them might potentially be viewed as sexist or misogynistic. And that is only one of countless examples.

Do you act that way in your personal relationships? Do you tell your partner that his/her concerns are silly and refuse to listen when he/she is very upset? Doesn’t seem like a great way to communicate. Do you find personal attacks silly? Try experimenting with some empathy and compassion, trying to see this from our side. It might get you further in the long run.

The smack down will occur in November, and Clinton Democrats will be victorious. We will then be able to rid the party of ultra-leftists who are many times nothing but anti-American losers. Bye Obama, bye Brazile, bye Dean, bye Kerry, bye Pelosi, bye Reid, bye Richardson, bye Kennedy, et al. You are a bunch of elitist that deserve to be defeated. Maybe then, the Democratic party will become the party of the people.

Comment by HelenWheels | 2008-06-11 20:01:26

Well, you’re delusional at best. Take a look-see at today’s polls:

Although it’s still very early in the campaign, the latest NBC/WSJ poll has Obama leading McCain 47 to 41. I believe this is the bump that we all expected after the primary wars finally finished. The last poll was in April, which had Obama 46-43, within the margin of error for the poll. What’s really interesting, though, are the ethnic and voter group breakdowns: Obama leads with African Americans 83-7 (7? - geez), Hispanics 62-28, women 52-33, Catholics 47-40, independents 41-36, all women 52-33, and blue collars 47-42. Among Hillary supporters, Obama leads 61-19. Among white men, as you can imagine, McCain leads 55-35 as he does with soccer moms at 44-38. Among the respondents, 54 to 30 say that they believe Obama will win the election.

Another interesting fact is that if you add Hillary to the ticket, he picks up 3 additional points over McCain/Romney.

The fact that these “numbers” come from NBC/WSY is highly suspect. Were Keith Olberman and Chris Mathews, Rachel Maddow, et al, the pollsters?

With all of what is going on, why are people not ensuring that those listed above who will run for relection lose their seats? If Kerry et all think they can stick it to the Clintons, who have been the rock of this party, why don’t we stick it to them? Who is Kerry running against? We need to help that person!

There is a democrat from Gloucester, MA, an attorney named Ed O’Reilly who is challenging John Kerry in 2008. He received 23% of the vote of democratic delegates at the recent Massachusetts convention and that is enough to give him a spot on the primary ballot on september 13, 2008. We need to get the word out if we truly want to do something to begin to end the elitist domination of our party! Ed can use your dollars too!

We are not in the minority. The numbers are growing daily. The DNC is finally realizing this as they still can’t raise any funds and Axelrod is at a loss on how to bring us all together.

They have stated that they don’t need us and we are stating, well… that’s good because we do not want you. At least the republicans treat us much nicer.

You can protest it and argue it all you want but your ridiculousness is being laughed at, blogged about, and on top of that, Obama’s wayyyyy ahead. I’m also certain that if this blog gets too much attention, Hillary would step in herself & tell you to shut the hell up because you’re harming the dem party.

CNN already started its pro-Obama coverage by doing a story on RFK’s death in 1968 and drawing parallels to Obama in 2008-minus the death part of course.
The story was full of hoopla about the similarities between the young RFK and Obama and their stance on the war, the youth movement, on and on. It was sickening that they would do such a pro one candidate profile and not give any equal time to his opponent.
This is not journalism, this is a serious problem.
I hope the American voter stays alert for similar media persuation in the future, because it is only going to get worse.
Every other sentence the media drones repeat the word “historic” in terms of Obama making sure they make you believe if you go against Obama you are going against history.
It is a very frightening time.

A person pointed this piece out to me today.

Since when does the American media get to force feed us our presidents?

http://tinyurl.com/6od4hk

first paragraph

Right now, major U.S. media corporations are trying to sway the outcome of the Democratic primaries, in part by sabotaging the campaign of Senator Hillary Clinton of New York. Evidently, the parent companies or affiliates of these press outlets hope to avert many of the regulatory changes she has proposed for Wall Street and the oil companies, as well as her New Deal-type jobs program and alternative energy plan. Such intiatives have the potential for negatively impacting their businesses.

to long to post it all…

I saw that too and was soooo disgusted. CNN is allowed to blatantly compare Obamox to RFK, but when Hillary just mentions RFK’s name and fate, while talking about the length of the primary season (Nothing to do with Obamox), she gets accused of wanting him dead!!!!!!!!!!!!! But CNN gets away scott free even though they are the ones now blatantly making the comparison.

Please take me off of your listing. I will forever be a Hillary Clinton supporter. I have voted a straight Democratic ticket for the past 20 years; since I was old enough to vote. This ends today. I do not want to hear that there are merely “nuanced” policy differences between Senator Obama and Senator Clinton for that is a misnomer. When a conservative like Andrew Sullivan says that one of the things he likes best about Senator Obama [besides the fact that he is not a Clinton] is that his [Obama's] economic policies are not much different than Senator McCain’s there is a real disconnect between the MSM “image” of Senator Obama and the unknown reality.

I will no longer be a party to this charade.

Letter of the day: Pfleger and the AWOL cardinal
By Michelle Malkin • June 9, 2008 12:06 PM

Thankfully, not everyone in Chicago is a fan of racial demagogue Rev. Michael Pfleger’s “flair”– or of the Catholic Church’s lack of backbone in dealing with the rogue priest.

Michelle,

I have known Mike Pfleger for a long time. My brother-in-law was in the seminary with him and Mike baptized my nephew in a backyard baptism years ago. Mike used to come to my wife’s family home for dinner years back.

Mike was always the kid that was picked on when he was young. He was a strange egg then and my bro-in-law took him home on weekends mostly because he felt sorry for Mike during the seminary years.

Since then I have battled Mike several times. I was the president of the athletic committee of one of the schools that voted down allowing St. Sabina into the SouthSide Catholic conference. The REAL reason they were voted down was because they did not want to abide by the rules of the conference. They wanted changes made or they would not agree to play. They suddenly went to the press and through out the race card when they were not voted in.

Shortly after this, I received a call from Cardinal George. He asked that we re-vote and asked that they be allowed to play. He said he will personally oversee the rules issues and he would be sure that it will have a positive result for both sides. So I met with my board and persuaded them to vote with the Cardinal’s oversight and they did, as did the other 19 parishes. Cardinal George was even present for one of our called meetings and again re-iterated that he will make things right. The problem was that George then did a huge disappearing act. He NEVER mediated the rules issue thus caused St. Sabina to withdraw from the conference. (Sounds like a familiar pattern with George.)

Later another battle with Mike Pfleger ensued when a friend of mine, John Riggio, who years ago inherited his father’s LEGAL business of selling guns. Mike Pfleger wanted to and still wants to close him down. John never ever sold an illegal gun in his life, and is VERY cautious on who is allowed in his shop and buys guns. Much of his business is law officers. John always says, ‘I don’t sell or approve the sale of guns.’ The government does, as much processing and background checks are made before a sale can be consummated.

Mike Pfleger stood on private property next to John’s gun shop and shouted, “John Riggio, were going to snuff you out.” You can imagine the shock that John’s supporters heard from inside the store. Here is a man of the cloth, a Catholic Priest, announcing that he is going to kill someone because he runs a legal business! Now we can all assume that Mike did not REALLY say that to REALLY kill John, but how did his flock take this? How do we know that one of his followers took this to mean just what he said? That was John[’s] real fear, but of [course] the press doesn’t care about John or his family.

I was there at John’s shop when Mike was arrested with Jesse Jackson a couple weeks later. On a side note, Jesse was arrested with $35,000 in his pocket. I saw him try to hand off a wad of cash at the store but the police said he can’t. I later heard it was over 35K. What was he doing with this money? Opening up a gun safety school? Again, everyone in the press is afraid to make mention of this excessive cash issue. Anyway, there was Mike who arrived with about 8 supporters and about 15 press people and cameras. There were over 150 supporters in John’s store, myself included. I saw Mike and his handful of supporters stand right in front of John’s door and signaled his supporters to let the camera man in toward him. When the stage was set, he started yelling. What a joke it was! John asked if Mike and Jackson wanted to come in and he can show them how the store operated, which was much stricter than the big box stores selling guns. They refused, and rather stand and block the entrance.

Once again the cardinal vanished from all of this. The truth is, he is afraid of Mike Pfleger. Mike finally has the stage that for years was undermined by his peers. He has his supporters in the church and many non-supporters outside the church, (both black and white). Mike learned how to coax money out of politicians and big businesses to flourish his parish. For that I commend him. During one visit, I saw huge stacked boxes of Wilson athletic gear at St. Sabina that they told me was all donated. As an athletic director, I was envious, yet glad that they got this.

The reality is that Mike is fake and still looking for attention that he thrived for all his life. Mike was ridiculed as a kid, ridiculed in the seminary and found his stage at St. Sabina. His is preaching just what his flock wants to hear. He is playing to them and they like it. (Just look at them in the videos) Mike may or may not agree with what he is saying, but hits a nerve with his followers. This latest is nothing compared to his weekly broadcast that he has/had on-line during his Sunday services over the years. During my athletic battles with him, I listened in on a few of these “sermons” and got totally disgusted with what he was saying to his parish. It sounded more like a cult and not a Catholic mass! He would preach hate, and distrust. He would condemn the whites and portray the whites as “inherited all the wealth”. Back then I wondered what would happen if I walk in during all this. Would I be sacrificed as the big evil?

Mike is totally delusional. He likes to take the stage and fire up his flock. It is not Catholic. It is not biblical. It is fire and brimstone on all that don’t agree. He must be removed by the cardinal. It’s time that George stops disappearing and start to take charge. If not, then he needs to takes a leave of absence as well!

I wish I had taken the time to tell them, not now, not ever, will I support their causes, because they really stand for nothing, if they could turn around and promote this jerk. Voters have little doubt as to who is benefitting from the media coverage this year—Barack Obama. Fifty-four percent (54%) say Obama has gotten the best coverage so far.
Twenty-two percent (22%) say McCain has received the most favorable coverage while 14% say that Hillary got the best treatment…

Looking ahead to the fall campaign, 44% believe most reporters will try to help Obama while only 13% believe that most will try to help McCain. Twenty-four percent (24%) are optimistic enough to believe that most reporters will try to offer unbiased coverage.

Even Democrats tend to believe their candidate will receive better treatment—27% of those in Obama’s party believe most reporters will try to help him win while only 16% believe they will help McCain. A plurality of Democrats—34%–believe most reporters will be unbiased.

Among unaffiliated voters, 44% believe reporters will try to help Obama and 14% believe they will try to help McCain.

Michael Pfleger returns June 16: “He’s a black Jesus stuck in a white man’s body”

, it looks like the Catholic Church in Chicago has lost whatever balls it found when it temporarily suspended Pfoaming-at-the-mouth preacher of hate Michael Pfleger for his racially poisoned sermon a few weeks ago. Because he’s baaaack. Again. The Chicago Trib reports that Obama’s longtime friend and earmark recipient will return to St. Sabina on June 16 after being placed on leave to “reflect” on his politicking from the pulpit.

Question: Which Pfleger will come back and reassume his leadership position in the Catholic Church?

The Hillary-mimicking, Vanilla Ice-prancing, Jeremiah Wright-impersonating reverend who has attracted a cult of supporters over two decades?

Or some other Pfleger who was the man Obama knew before he became the man Obama says he didn’t know?

I don’t think you really need to worry about that. Even if cnn and msnbc try to bury it, you can bet that fox will play it in it’s entirety, then in little snippets every 10 minutes until the polls close on November 4th. To be accompanied by more juicy tidbits from Rev Wright sermons we haven’t seen yet. And I’d even bet on at least one racist anti-American rant where our dear Senator Obama is shown on camera hooting and hollering along with the rest of the crowd. We all know fox plays to win and are the masters of the smear campaign. Plus they have more regular viewers than cnn and msnbc combined.

Those you see following the Obamessiah are not Democrats, though the species may try to look similar. They are in fact nothing but JACKASSES!

“The Joshua Generation project will be the Obama campaign’s outreach to young people of faith. There’s unprecedented energy and excitement for Obama among young evangelicals and Catholics. The Joshua Generation project will tap into that excitement and provide young people of faith opportunities to stand up for their values and move the campaign forward.”

The official rollout won’t be for another two weeks or so, but The Brody File has been told the activities will include house parties, blogging, concerts and more.

somebody has to provide all the evangelical churches and groups with Obama’s illinois voting record on partial birth abortions etc. That would kill any support he would get.

My e-mail to EL:

I was going to send Emily’s List the money I would have sent to Hillary for the General Election, but after your fast switch to the lesser qualified male whose campaign was so sexist, no money from me.

Did you catch on that there was a coup (Pelosi, Dean, et.al.) to remove the Clintons? Did you like the way the nomination was rigged?

I’m voting McCain, the qualified candidate, not as qualified as Hillary, but then who is?

What the coup didn’t count on was that Hillary was a very good candidate. She is deeply religious and her religion’s tenet is service to people. She is also smarter than just about anyone in the game. When someone has a calling, it is easier to keep going, even ascend, when everyone tells you to give up, hand it over to the chosen one.

I’m not donating to Emily’s List or to NARL.

Comment by LN | 2008-06-09 12:34:31

Yes, and let me tell you, as a life-long Methodist myself (Hillary is also a United Methodist)…if videos of hate-filled “preachers” in Hillary’s UM church were broadcast over YouTube ranting about our AA brothers and sisters, there would be rioting in the streets.

WIN WITHOUT ME.

Yes, I second that sentiment.

Obama is a manchurian candidate. His rhetoric does not match his actions. I do not trust that man nor is he qualified for the office of the Presidency.

I, too, got an email from Emily’s List and told them what they could do with their Unity Pony.

This is the biggest hijacking of democracy since the 2000 election.

Comment by Denise | 2008-06-09 12:29:41

and what is up with Chris Wallace? Does he hate all women or just Hillary?

Comment by ferret | 2008-06-09 12:32:06

The Democrats will own Congress so if they finally get a backbone, we won’t have to worry about the Supreme Court. That is an empty threat I am tired of hearing.

The Democratic Party will soon realize there is no longer any party unity because there are millions of us who value true democracy greater. This is bigger than Hillary Clinton, who I backed 100%. This is about democracy, respect, honor, and standing up for what is right. Apparently you think we are very shallow and blind, with no minds of our own. You will be very surprised.

I will not vote for the nominee SELECTED by the party elite.
I will vote for John McCain unless a better candidate presents.
I will do my part to stand up for democracy.

I am speaking for myself, but I have a feeling there are millions of others standing for the same things.

I am speaking as a person who once was a lifelong supporter of the Democratic Party.

Chris Wallace especially wants to give crap to Hillary since Bill gave him a good solid smackdown in their interview a couple of years ago.

Noone has commented on the FOX show this morning that McCain is polling 3% points behind John McCain. 46% McCain to Boomerang’s 43%. Bob Beckel with a worried frown on his face was asked why Boomerang had not gotten a big bumy from Hillary dropping out, he said well just wait til the convention. then he’ll get a spike. Yeh right. Like Bush’s and congress’ approval ratings. Guess Pissola, Deanossaur, Brazillian and others didn’t foresee this coming. LOL

Absoulutely! BO should have got a 10 point spike from ‘winning’ the nomination. Everybody gets that spike, even Dukakis and Mondale did (it doesn’t last, obviously). The fact that BO did not is a bad sign and the political veterans know it.

Misogynists Beware! The Women are Talking

by Sandra Marcella-Moore Page 1 of 1 page(s)

http://www.opednews.com

Well, boys, you’ve really gone and done it this time. You managed to spew vile sexist comments at a shockingly unprecedented level. With the charge being led by the media, you injected your sexist hatred into every nook and cranny of this election process. Congratulations! Great work! The so-called journalists, the has beens of the DNC and the boys who held up signs that said “Iron My Shirt” and rudely interrupted political rallies have done it! We’re very grateful to you, we women are. You’ll never know how much.

We’re grateful because you have started women talking with each other in a way we haven’t talked in years. We are talking like we have haven’t talked since the suffrage movement and since we had leaders like Susan B. Anthony or Alice Paul. We are talking like we haven’t talked since the National Organization of Women was born. We are talking like we haven’t talked since our mothers told us we could be whatever we wanted to be, even President of the United States. By the way, the dialogue and the support has been tremendous. We appreciate your help in the matter.

PUMA - Party Unity My A–!

Just Say No Deal is an umbrella organization giving voice to over 80 grassroots organizations, blogs and millions of self- professed PUMAs intent on one mission: NOBAMA! Coalition members are pushing varying agendas and voting strategies, but the factions are united in their unwavering decision to not “fall in line” by supporting Barack Obama.

http://www.justsaynodeal.com

Concerned citizens have come out of the woodwork to express their distaste for and frustration with party leaders and the outcome of the nominating process. The Just Say No Deal website offers those voters an array of choices to assist in their decision-making process. The coalition will continue to organize in pursuit of its mission of keeping another unqualified candidate from inheriting the Oval Office.

Larry - I was an Emily’s List member but quit when Clair McCaskill became a campaign manager for Barack. Here I donated to McCaskill for Senator because I wanted to be a woman supporting women. But once McCaskill got elected, she turned her backs on those who got her elected. Another Judas.

Comment by Atty | 2008-06-09 12:56:58

I was a member of NOW, and a contributor on Emily’s List, but I resigned when I was solicited to send threatening spam (all contact info given in detail with e mail and fax number) to McCaskill and the three female Governors who supported Obama.

I was supposed to tell them that we helped you get elected, and we can get you un-elected.

I thought it was repulsive to tell ‘liberated’ independent women how to think and how to vote.

But I guess Dreffein disagrees.

Comment by Mel | 2008-06-09 12:46:04

Is it not time to hold those of the DNP accountable for the things they have said?

Start with Donna Brazile who stated outright: If the SD’s determine the outcome of the Primary’s then I will hand in my SD card and leave the Democratic Party.

SD’s have determined and yet Donna Brazile is still hanging around, why, two things can only be determined by her not quiting:

1- Her words were a threat to certain segments of the population in attempting to sway votes
2-She continues to be the same dirty liar she was in 1988 when she was removed from Dukakis’s campaign for making up stories and lies about Bush Sr.

So Brazile is one of two things, using threats or a liar. We know she is a liar which is incredible she is still a member of the SD’s and a member of the RBC.

Howard Dean has a duty to hold Brazile to her word and remove her from the DNP and provide truth to what people say and hold them accountable.

Second, any SD up for re-election, write demanding a simple answer which is justifiable in determining to vote for that SD again in the fall or the next election cycle, by simply asking them:

As an elected official in my district, please provide sound and justifiable reasoning for placing your support behind Obama. Failure to respond will result in using my voice vigorously against you in the next election you are in. In addition, not providing sound reasoning for placing your support behind Obama will result in the same outcome as above!

Comment by Yo | 2008-06-09 12:48:53

I guess I just don’t understand the mentality of the women that just went ahead and jumped on the bandwagon after all the ranting and raving they did against Obama. It has to be the abused woman syndrome. They know they were abused by Obama and his supporters and they just go back again and again with smiles on their faces.

Some women just never learn.

Comment by Susan | 2008-06-09 12:52:28

I couldn’t have said it better myself. I no longer consider myself a Democrat, even though I have been a registered Democrat for almost 40 years.

We can only surmise what Obama’s real, hidden agenda for this country will be, should he be put in charge by those who drank the koolaid. He frightens me, as does his wife, as do his associates.

I will vote for John McCain. I agree that he is a decent and good man. Eventually, however, I hope to see a party spring up in the middle - between the Republicans and the Democrats. The Moderate Party would be for those Americans who do not want to see wide policy swings in either direction, but who prefer a more moderate course. I hear that there are many Americans who fall into this category…

Great letter Ellen! I too was disappointed when I got the email from Emily’s List. I can’t imagine what they are thinking?! I do believe that some people are so caught up in the action of campaigning that they aren’t quite yet ready to give up the nice catered events and elbow rubbing that comes along with the territory of working/volunteering for a campaign…so, they will take the next best thing to keep themselves “connected” to the action. It’s really sad.

I am one of those whom will not vote for Obama. I see two insulting, fallacious arguments from other democrats here. 1.) If you were a true democrat, you would vote for Obama. 2.) If you are a Clinton supporter, you would do what she told you to do, vote for Obama. Both of these arguments are insulting to my intelligence. These kinds of calls to authority and calls to popularity are the exact reason that I haven’t liked Obama and his camp of fallacy. Add the insults, and you have a fool’s candidate. McCain is the only one left that I can vote for that has any sort of experience and arguments that are followed through with realistic solutions and premises. Did you really think that you could run a campaign against a candidate that has had half the Democratic Party’s voters respect for the last decade, insult them, call them old, tell them that they are part of the problem, and then expect them to quietly fall in line for the election. Enjoy your “new coalition”. It was Obama who made that bed, now he will lie in it.

Comment by kevin | 2008-06-09 13:36:06

Unlike the borg collective, we have independence of thought. True democrats have free will and the obligation to vote not how we are told but to vote our own convictions. Obama is underqualifed, corrupt, unpatriotic, smug, narcissistic, racist. Gee, why wouldn’t I vote for him?

Comment by msindy | 2008-06-09 13:35:18

I’m going to unsubscribe from Emily’s List as well.

It’s not “emotional turmoil”, Ellen Malcom - that sounds like something Obama would accuse us “sweeties” of.

I will not vote for Obama. I have reviewed the ample evidence which proves Obama is not fit to be president. I have reached a logical conclusion and made decision.

Do NOT insult me by implying anything otherwise.

Comment by msindy | 2008-06-09 13:52:43

ps. Also got an email from my Democratic governor today. Yet another male Democrat for whom I campaigned/donated. He did support Hillary in the primary, but said he enthusiastically supports Obama now. Party unity nonsense. How insulting. Why they are sending these emails, do they think we are wayward sheep, and one word from them will bring us back to bleating contentment? After all that has gone down? UNSUBSCRIBE to him as well.

I second Harriet Christian - I was a second class citizen and now I’m nothing. Well, they are nothing to me.

Pure Eloquence. Really beautiful words. Thank you.

This Grass Roots Action was put together by LAMusing and Shtuey

ALL HANDS ON DECK!

18 million hands - send them to the DNC!

1. Trace your hands on an 8×11 sheet of paper. Make it colorful to grab attention.
2. Write your name and city/state in the center of your hands and the words “I am one of 18 million.”
3. Above the hands, write: “These hands are on the front lines of democracy. I pledge I will not vote for Obama.”
4. Below the hands, write a line or two about your reasons you won’t vote for BO, why you are upset with the DNC, or whatever stirs your soul. We suggest you keep it fairly brief for maximum impact.
5. Put it in an envelope and send it off to the DNC.

Democratic National Committee
430 S. Capitol St. SE
Washington, DC 20003

6. Pass it on!!! Post this call to arms wherever you can! Let’s bombard the DNC with the millions of hands of the voters they dismissed, ignored, disenfranchised and belittled. And remember the old saying - “Many hands make light work.” GET FIVE Friends to do this! POST to FIVE sites!

Special note if you live in Florida: Make it just half a hand! Let them know you’d like to be a whole person again.

Jason-what’s sad is not so much the disaffection of rightly disappointed Hillary supporters. It would be healthy if they were venting in a civil, intelligent, reasoned way in a blog like this one. The problem is that this blog is attracting conspicuously stupid commentary, not thoughtful disaffection. One can decide to vote for McCain and explain oneself in articulate and intelligent ways. Sadly, that is not what I read in this blog.

Comment by Elizabeth | 2008-06-09 15:10:11

Perhaps that is not the purpose of this blog. If both you and Jason are sincerely saddened by what you read, why not ask people to explain their reasons? And if you are so saddened why the hell do come back? Yes, why do you come back if this blog upsets you?

Voting for McCain, if it comes to that, is not a vengeance or protest vote for me. I am hoping for an emergence of a viable third party candidate but if that doesn’t happen, McCain is the lesser of two evils.
I don’t agree with many of his views, but I trust him a whole lot more than I trust Obama.

Voting against corruption is not a protest. It is standing up for democracy. For the first time in my life I feel like I have no one to vote for. That is why I hope for a viable third party candidate.

From the Kansas City Star’s Editorial Board’s web site http://voices.kansascity.com/node/ :

Hillary Clinton’s ungracious exit hurts Barack Obama

Hillary Clinton was the last person in America to realize she wasn’t going to be president. Her exit from the Democratic race over the weekend left little to celebrate.

Barack Obama supporters are just happy she didn’t trash the candidate who will lead the ticket this fall.

Meanwhile, Clinton made it appear she would still take the 2nd spot on the ticket.

Is she kidding?

Obama would be repudiating everything he believes in (starting with “change”) by doing that.

Clinton’s exit is attracting attention because she showed a lot of tenacity as the first serious female candidate to make it this far in a presidential race.

I will certainly give her that much.

But her refusal to bow graciously out of the race hurt Obama. He at times appeared to be a weak candidate — especially when Clinton beat him in a few last-minute (but still meaningless) primaries.

Clinton now ought to keep her word to campaign relentlessly for Obama and the Democratic ticket — without her– this fall. Then she should return to the Senate to fill out her term and responsibilities to New Yorkers.

I am thinking she needs to get a fake cast put on her legs. Just fake a slip getting out of the car.

Then say oh, sorry just can’t make it to all those rallies. But, I can send Bill. Oh, you don’t want the person who campaigned for every democrat running for office since 2000? Oh, yeah, that racist Bill that you thru under the bus.

I say the Clintons should say f*ck you to the “new” democratic party.

I wonder since Obama/Marxist website is so open for people to look at if their donor base and credit card information is being hacked.

Might give some there a clue to be checking their security.

JUST SAY NO TO BLACK LIBERATION MARXIST THEOLOGY
NO OBAMA/MARXIST
MCCAIN 2008 unless Hillary rises

I knew it. Obama knows he is going to get his ass handed to him by the GOP and he’s ALREADY starting to weasel his way out of it. Goddamned coward. Bush does the same damned thing. Fuck up beyond all reason and blame someone else. What a wimp. God I hate people like Barky. Be a friggin’ man and accept responsibility for your actions. You’re a shitty politician and your scorched earth policies backfired.

hee hee hee hee “appeared to be”. He appeared weak because he lost legitimate contests, you yahoos!!

yeah, I “appeared” to get only at C on this test, but that’s because my score was a 75 out of 100, but really, that’s only because other people got higher grades, and that’s why I got a C. Otherwise it would have been an A. That’s ’cause I’m so great I should always get A’s!

what baloney.

Jason, I didn’t say the Republican Party was above vote stealing and dirty tricks, I said they were honest (open) about doing it. They don’t pretend to be any better than that.

I don’t mean to denegrate either party. They are what they are. We need either to change them, create a new party, or settle for the choices they give us.

Myself I would like to see Obama’s camp deny 100% the Michelle whitey tape. I don’t mean a denial of the denial, I mean a full fledged 100% denial. I have emailed them but no reply yet and it’s been 4 hours. Maybe we need 1,000’s of emails sent to them so that maybe a flood of emails will get their attention.

And if the tape exists and the Republicans are sitting on it until after Obama is officially nominated, they can say good-bye to any votes they would have gotten from Hillary supporters.

We really need a viable third party.

This is why I NEVER donate to groups. I give my money directly to the candidate of my choice. This way I do not have to be incensed when a group endorses someone I despise.

This Emily’s list thing stinks to high heaven. Another buyout or forced entry. Stop donated to them. They just supported a man who organized the most disgustingly sexist destruction of a woman that I have seen in the history of politics. And yes, make NO mistake, it was orchestrated by the Barack Obama campaign. His faux outrage, if even that, is a lie. He is a sexist pig, a misogynist and he knew exactly who to tap to help make happen the most filthy and demeaning attacks I have ever seen on a woman in the media and on the net. This is a man who would kill his own mother if it meant he could get ahead. Barack Obama OWNS what happened and we all know it. And how can anyone tell you that the people on Emily’s list don’t know that? Did they not watch the underlying look of fear on Hillary’s face as she ‘endorsed” Barack Obama???????

The Chicago Machine and middle east are systematically buying America out folks.

I also received two emails from Emily’s list. It has occurred to me Roe V Wade has been used in every election since the Supreme Court ruling by both parties to extort women’s vote and this is the end for me. This issue has been created to coerce the largest block of voters in the country.

When the ERA was proposed, this basic recognition of Women’s Rights was defeated twice and that is inexplicable to me especially the number of women who didn’t vote in favor.

Now, when women who claim to be advocates, like Ellen Malcolm and Taylor Marsh roll over with token or no indignation, it feeds my rage. What is Ms. Malcolm going to tell the women she is supporting? That she did everything she could to bring to the public, the facts of attacks against Hillary Clinton and protested the illegal RBC ruling?

NARAL is another example of betrayal by the very people who should be the most enraged. In many ways, we are our own worst enemies. Even the largest group representing women, NOW, has organized no protest and for the most part, has been silent.

The damage to all these groups will become clear as time goes on. There has been tacit approval to the sexist campaign against Hillary and there is no way they will be able overcome this precedent setting behavior. Regardless of race or social group, women have more in common than we sometimes realize and our best interests are the same.

I wish I knew how to convey the information of our power if we are united, but nothing has basically changed. We have been “allowed” to vote and “permitted” to make decisions about our own bodies. We still have a chance to make our voices heard if we can organize our votes in November. Whether it’s better to a) stay home, b) write in Hillary’s name or c) vote McCain, I don’t know, but if there is a consensus, it will be heard in Washington and the studios of the various media.

It will take more than talk. It is going to take active campaigning after a decision is made about the best approach. Fliers on windshields, taking to friends, family and neighbors. Making contacts on the Internet and following through. Someone with a website willing to set up a voting mechanism would be helpful. There would be very little cost involved and each person could provide their own fliers. It is mainly a matter talking to people. Please. We can let this go unanswered.

I was watching Hardball on MSNBC tonight and there was someone from Emily’s List along with one of the Kennedy’s (Kathleen I think) and the daughter of Ann Richards. All three were stating they were sure Clinton Supporters would fall in line and support the Democratic Party and vote for Obama. Who are these people? How dare they presume they speak for me. I sincerely hope they do not speak for the majority of Clinton supporters who are out there - I am still enraged at the Rules committee and the DNC. Obama will never get my vote. The democratic party and indeed the nation needs to see that they cannot go behind closed doors and come up with the candidate THEY THINK we should have. They have forced their candidate on us - THEY have determined who the people’s candidate should be. If the DNC thinks they have picked the right person so be it - let them try to get him in the White House without MY vote.

What a wonderful response!! I also feel that I can never, never vote for someone who is so lacking in leadership qualities.

DON’T they GET IT??? This man is not qualified to be leader of the free world, and I must tell you, as of late, the “free world” is not feeling very free.

I found this a few nights ago and it sent chills up my spine. I was looking for something that I had heard as a child, and that was long ago, I found this:

The first quote is from a 1972 interview (in her heyday, Fallaci was renowned for her pull-no-punches style of questioning) with Palestinian terrorist George Habash, who declared that the goal was to:

…wage war “against Europe and America” and to ensure that henceforth “there would be no peace for the West.” The Arabs, he informed her, would “advance step by step. Millimeter by millimeter. Year after year. Decade after decade. Determined, stubborn, patient. This is our strategy. A strategy that we shall expand throughout the whole planet.”

At the time, Fallaci thought he was referring simply to terrorism. Only later–much later–did she understand that:

…he “also meant the cultural war, the demographic war, the religious war waged by stealing a country from its citizens … In short, the war waged through immigration, fertility, presumed pluriculturalism.”

Cold wars, terrorism wars, demographic wars. As far as the latter goes, Bernhard (and Callimachus) offers an explicit declaration, this time from Algerian President Boumedienne way back in 1974:

One day millions of men will leave the southern hemisphere of this planet to burst into the northern one. But not as friends. Because they will burst in to conquer, and they will conquer by populating it with their children. Victory will come to us from the wombs of our women.

You can’t say the West wasn’t warned. But warnings often only seem important in retrospect. It was the sort of thing few were paying attention to at the time, “typical hyperbole.” Bombast. And perhaps it was, at that.

At least back then the threats were peaceful and reproductive in nature. More recently they took on a more chilling (or rather, a decidedly “hot”) tone–witness this Haaretz article (via Little Green Footballs) that quotes Ayatollah Ali Khamenei of Iran telling former Spanish prime minister Jose Maria Aznar at a meeting in 2001 that “Iran must declare war on Israel and the United States until they are completely destroyed,” and that “setting Israel on fire” was the first order of the day.

Unless Khamenei is a man especially given to metaphor, it seems we must take his intent seriously. The Haaretz article concludes with the words, “Khamenei still holds the post of Iranian spiritual leader, and [is] considered to be the powerful man in the country.”

There’s that “spiritual leader” phrase again, one which actually deserves the much-abused designation “Orwellian.” I’ve written about “spiritual leaders” before, here, in a post entitled “Yeah, and Goebbels was the ’spiritual leader’ of the Nazis, too.”
