MEDIA Presence of PUMA and “Just Say No” to Obama [Video Update of Will Bowers]

Diane Mantouvalos talks to Fox News’s Neil Cavuto about party unity, PUMA (which stands for “Party Unity My Ass”), and justsaynodeal.com. Mr. Cavuto has been especially welcoming to those of us who hold steadfast to nominating Hillary Clinton as the more qualified candidate. This video was posted, by V, on our No Quarter channel at YouTube:

OF NOTE: Tomorrow morning (Monday), Will Bowers of PUMA08.com will be interviewed by MSNBC’s Monica Novotny at 11:30 a.m. I have seen Will interviewed on other programs, and he is an articulate spokesperson — as is Diane — for our arguments and our cause. VIDEO UPDATE of Will Bowers on Neil Cavuto’s program this past week, just below:

We have a VIDEO UPDATE that features both Will Bowers (appearing tomorrow morning at 11:30 a.m. ET on MSNBC) and Thuc Nguyen, 32, a graduate student at the University of California (who is featured in the second article quoted below):

Here are a couple snippets from news articles about Will Bowers and his PUMA efforts:

Will Bower is known as the person who had created the group known as “Party Unity My A—“ (PUMA), after Senator Hillary Clinton of New York had lost the Democratic nomination. The ongoing contest between Clinton and Senator Barack Obama of Illinois had created a rift within the Democratic Party. The ruling by the Democratic National Committee (DNC) had left many supporters for Clinton bitter and frustrated.

[...]

McCain did not hesitate to go after the Clinton supporters. Will Bower, the founder of PUMA; wants Clinton in office. Bower would not settle for Obama. Instead, Bower has openly said he will support McCain.

Bower has formed PUMA to get other frustrated Clinton supporters to make a stance. This stance is to keep Obama from winning the US Presidency. Bower is not just angry at Obama, he is angry at the whole Democratic Party. …

:::::::::::::::::::

Hillary Clinton’s official acknowledgment of defeat and call for party unity finally came yesterday, but William Bower wanted none of it.

A Clinton supporter and contributor for whom voting Democratic comes as natural as breathing, Mr Bower very nearly refused to attend the announcement. He knew Mrs Clinton was going to ask him to do what he considered unthinkable: support Barack Obama, the presumptive Democratic nominee.

“I don’t want to hear her say that, and I know she will,” he said before the event, which was held in the National Building Museum in Washington. “I don’t want to be told to vote for Obama.”

“I love her, and I would do 95 per cent of what she’d ask,” Mr Bower said. But not that.

How many Democrats there are like Mr Bower is Mr Obama’s newest worry after a passionate primary that, while bringing out millions of new Democrats, also split the party in two. Both Mr Obama and Mrs Clinton each got nearly 18 million votes.

[...]

“In the hearts of her ardent supporters, we know she’s the best one this time or 2012, which is why we’re willing to put [Senator John] McCain in for four years and [then] have another go at it,” said Thuc Nguyen, 32, a graduate student at the University of California who is part of a burgeoning group known as PUMA, which stands for Party Unity My A—.

Another organisation, HillaryGrassrootsCampaign.com, is urging her to continue running for president, as an independent. “Why vote for McCain or Obama, when you can vote for Hillary!” the website says. “Our mission is to keep our eye on the prize and that prize is having Hillary in the White House,” said Robin Carlson, a spokesman for that group.

Another group, WriteHillaryIn.com, wants people to do just that on the ballot in those states that allow it.

Pam Hamilton, a Clinton supporter who works in sales in Medford, Oregon, and who started a website called ClintonDems, said a lot of women are feeling the four words about party unity that gave PUMA its acronym. She, and others, talk of Mr Obama in terms of inexperience and lack of substance, while complaining of unfair treatment of Mrs Clinton, both by the Democratic National Committee and by the media.

Ms Hamilton suggested she was not sure whom she will vote for – “My dream is that somehow Hillary gets on the ticket” – or whether she will even vote. But the longer she talked, the more it seemed she already had made up her mind. “With neither of them really appealing to my sensibilities, I have to look at who’s more experienced and who do I feel most comfort with, and it’s John McCain,” she said. “We know him.”

It is unclear what effect the PUMA crowd will have in November, if any, but its ranks are mobilising. Ms Nguyen helped launch last week what she described as the group’s official website, gopumaparty.com, although there are several ad hoc offshoots. …

Diane is a wonderful spokesperson. It’s great to see these PUMA members on TV, and I would point out that many of them are under the age of 50!

If Nader could take enough away from Gore in 2000, the PUMA party voters should sufficiently threaten this presumptive Democratic nominee.

Comment by Democrat | 2008-06-15 18:56:23

This is not 2000. Now people see the difference it made to have a Republican in office, and McCain would continue the war — something almost 70% of the public opposes.

Comment by WasLNbutNoBamaBotsKeepStealingMyName | 2008-06-15 19:06:47

And nobama has flip-flopped on his war positions. Who knows what he will do?

Comment by Democrat | 2008-06-15 19:18:49

I don’t agree that he has flip-flopped. He is committed to ending the war but also committed to doing it in a sensible way. No one can sensibly commit to a specific amount of time for withdrawal. That wouldn’t be right or presidential.

Comment by Poor White | 2008-06-15 19:30:23

He is not the one in control of the war. It all depends on ground situation. Obama cannot be truseted. He is a dictator in the making, if you guys really were so much concerned about ending war, you all should have voted for Hillary and not to Obama.

Let him first prove himself in the senate.

Obama has hijacked democracy. SHAME

Comment by Hope Floats | 2008-06-15 19:31:59

Well, that’s what McCain has said, also. McCain wants to end the war responsibly, but he said if it takes 100 years, he will place America’s national security as his highest priority. Our soldiers understand this, and that is why they fight. Because they believe our country is the best in the world.

Comment by Teakwood | 2008-06-15 20:08:06

Democrat; question for you.

When you say “He is committed to ending the war but also committed to doing it in a sensible way.” is it sensible to leave Blackwater and other Merc’s in Iraq as BO has said he will do?

Comment by Ai1een | 2008-06-16 21:58:21

Frankly “Democrat”, it doesn’t matter if you “agree” or not, Obama HAS flip flopped and badly…in the newspapers’ badly. PROOF:

(NEW YORK TIMES 7/26/04) :”I’m not privy to Senate intelligence reports,’ Mr. Obama said. ‘What would I have done? I don’t know…”
[CHICAGO TRIBUNE 07/27/04] :”…There’s not much of a difference between my position and George Bush’s position at this stage.”
[THE NEW YORKER 10/30/06) :”…I didn’t have the benefit of U.S. intelligence. And, for those who did, it might have led to a different set of choices. So that might be something that sort of is obvious. But, again, we were in different circumstances at that time: I was running for the U.S. Senate, she had to take a vote, and casting votes is always a difficult test.”

Obama hasn’t even talked to General Petraus or any of the other military leaders in Iraq or Afghanistan. He has not visited that region in the past two years. He has flip-flopped about keeping troops in Iraq. NOBAMA for Commander in Chief.

Comment by power coast FL dave | 2008-06-15 20:16:54

Democrat doesn’t know what he is speaking of, he’s simply for the sound bite, and he takes some comfort, there.

My goodness, he could be John Kerry, he sounds so vapid.

The war is real, if it isn’t addressed, it breaks the US, like Afghanistan did the USSR.

In no way, shape or form is Obama qualified to handle it, those people are removed from reality, on a parallel planet, where one goes when one is in massive denial, and in crisis, where one has betrayed one’s countrymen.

BTW, McCain will continue Bush’s unworkable fantasy policies, too, none of them are qualified to handle it.

The best was Hillary Clinton, and she would have succeeded, IMO.

Mac said he would support U.S. soldiers as long as they were in harms way.

Barry wrote in his book that he would side with the Muslims, which may be fine if you’re Muslim or a hate-filled madman like Farakhan.

Barry just doesn’t care for U.S. bitter white Americans who cling to our guns, religion and trade.

Barry has always voted to fund the war when given the chance. Convicted Iraqi felons Auchi and Alsamare who fled to Chicago support him.

Barry never convened a single meeting of the Senate sub-committee that he just had to Chair which includes NATO. He was too busy scamming an election.

Barry said he was a class action litigator, yet he voted against class action lawsuits.

Barry said he was a community organizer, but claims he didn’t know his constituents were freezing in convicted felon and his homey Rezko’s projects, so that he could get campaign donations and a mansion that he couldn’t otherwise afford.

Barry should be in a cell next to Tony “The Fixer” Rezko.

ONCE YOU CROSS THAT LINE THERE IS NO TURNING BACK. And have you heard that PELOSI wants to be the FIRST FEMALE PRESIDENT in the not too far future? Yes, I am one of the 18 million for Hillary. Maybe the efforts mentioned here are all legit., but we should be careful about who’s and what’s what, as the DNC and Obama campaign continue to infiltrate and try to control the conversation. I mean, just telling me to people support McCain in November doesn’t sound like any real call to action.

Re: Will Bower on MSNBC tomorrow, this from March troubles me: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/will-bower/there-shant-be-blood-an_b_91083.html

He writes for HuffPost, appears on MSNBC… Again, it may be all legit. (sorry, Will, if I’m wrong), but where’s direct action being planned to fight the DNC on their rule violations? Yesterday on a conference call with another allegedly pro-Clinton coalition, when I interrupted a lot of idle chit-chat and suggested a campaign to get the DNC to revoke its nominee determination and press Clinton to get back into the race, (because she promised 18 mill. voters she wouldn’t quit), I was told we shouldn’t be threatening her “legacy”. Terms like “party unity”, “gracious”, and “legacy” are Rovean propaganda tools to frame the debate and neutralize the opposition. And we can see how well they’ve worked.

Anyway, this is just a heads up. For those who want to do something to actually get Sen. Clinton back on the ballot next November, please contact me by clicking on my screen name. Thanks. Rosemary

I have to vouch for Will.

He’s been a strong member of Hillary Clinton for President - One Million STRONG on Facebook. He chose to post on HuffPost to be a lone Hillary supporting voice. He struggled often to get them to post his work and when they did he had to fight to stop them from changing his headlines to anti-Hillary connotations. It takes courage to go into the lion’s den. Also, as for MSNBC, Will is going where he can get the message out. He was on Fox, I believe he has also been on CNN, and MSNBC. We have to go to the “liberal” outlets so that other Puma Dems can know they are not alone.

Will is a great guy and a true Puma. He’s a Hillary supporter to the core.

You can’t promote the issues important to women if you have a president in office with a ZERO lifetime rating from NARAL, as McCain does. And McCain is opposed to legislation making it easier for women who have suffered gender discrimination in the workplace.

Comment by Hope Floats | 2008-06-15 19:34:31

Yes, but McCain is not Obama. He has that going for him. That’s enough to keep him in office one term.

Obama is for quotas for AA women regardless of how unqualified for they may be for the position. He could care less about any other race.

I’m female and I’ve worked for and earned my degrees and job. I didn’t hit up a convicted felon for a mansion that I couldn’t afford.

MEEEchelle is a shining example of what a joke the Affirmative Action system is. What did she do with it?

1. She wrote a crappy hate thesis at Princeton,

2. Failed to practice law helping anyone,

3. Then she took a position she enjoyed at Chicago U - a hospital where she was responsible for turning away the sick and injured.

Now her slacker hubby who never helped anyone but himself gets to be considered for POTUS!

It’s sickening.

Comment by Fred C. Dobbs | 2008-06-15 21:08:01

African American women, unable to form complete sentences, spell or punctuate or add a short column of 5’s, products of Affirmative Action, running the back offices and HR departments.

I’m really confused about PUMA. I thought Riverdaughter was the first person to coin PUMA (Party Unity My Ass), and then a reader of her blog - Murphy - started Puma Pac. Now this Will person, whom I’ve never seen on any other Hillary blog or forum is being credited with starting PUMA. It sure would be nice if someone would make a post to clear up all of this and put it into context. Right now it’s sounding like a whole bunch of different blogs running off in different directions. Not a unified movement of people working together.

Comment by Joe Smith | 2008-06-15 19:04:13

It almost seem a good time to start a new party. If the BHO don’t want us we should just leave and form a party that will count each vote. Eliminate super delegates and will be run by the people not by some people with an ego trip.

Comment by Democrat | 2008-06-15 19:22:57

Why don’t you do that? Good idea! Start a new party.

What do you want to do first?

- Set up a platform
- Hold a convention
- Try to get your party on the ballot
- Recruit candidates
- Raise money

Get started - Time’s a wasting!

Or take back our party.

Comment by rwc | 2008-06-15 20:43:55

When has it been your *party* or party of the people for that matter?

After all we’re talking about the same party that:
*Passed NAFTA and subsequent crooked “free” trade deals.
*Killed Glass-Steagull Act.
*Passed the Telecommunications deregulation act.
*Stood silent while corporate America off-shored millions of well paying jobs and still does. *Helped pass the bankruptcy reform act(thanks Reid). *Helped pass tort reform. *That stands silent as China dumps toxic consumer goods and medicine that kills people into this country. *Refuses to stop labor arbitrage in the form of H1-B, L-1 and H-2 guest visa workers.
*Refuses to secure our ports and borders.
*Couldn’t care less about our country being in hock to China and Saudi Arabia.

This sort of behavior isn’t that of the party of the people but of a corporate owned party.

About the only man in the Congress who sticks up for the economic well being working and middle-class on a regular basis isn’t even a Democrat but Independent - Bernie Sanders.

It really makes me wonder what so-called Democrats are trying to take back.

Do you really want back the party that rolled over for Wall Street and gave you Obama?

Comment by AnninCa | 2008-06-15 20:49:52

Well, if you think we’re going to roll back NAFTA, go ahead.

But I am pretty sure you’re whistling in the dark.

And if you think Obama is offering secure borders, then I know you’ve not been awake.

Hillary offered real solutions. You obviously weren’t paying attention.

Pagan Power ; just wanted to say thanks for you recent article. Very insightful.

It really does not matter who gets credit for starting this PUMA as it went viral in 2 hours.

The big picture is that, as StrawberrybitesBarky points out, the meltdown that has started.

I can only conclude that BO’s strongarm tactics are starting to backfire so badly that the momentum necessary to win is devolving into power struggles with in the brick and mortar of the Democratic party.

The very high value impedance of the BO dictator moves are preventing ANY chance at party unity. If BO wants any chance of winning he needs to Show Donna “don’t hurt yourself” Brazzile and Rowland Martin (who call Mr. Johnson and idiot on CNN recently) the door before the convention.

It stands to reason that Senator Clinton does not get the floor vote she asked for and the DUNC adds insult to injury that will be the biggest plunder in the history of Modern American politics.

I am speculating that the reason the media “walk through” was canceled, was because the DUNC does not want to respond to the question of a floor vote not taking place.
It would not be good to let that cat out of the bag at this point in time.

And with BO out there with the message of bring knives and guns to a brawl, I am sure some SD’s are doing more than scratching their heads and rear ends. No money for the DUNC will mean Dean will have to “scale the resources” of his 50 state “plan” to just holding water.
Rohm must be really chagrined, having had this well reported argument with Dean some time ago.

Comment by AnninCa | 2008-06-15 20:40:48

If they cancelled the walk through?

They have cancelled Denver.

The Hireheels Million Woman March as well as the other activism has scared them silly.

They have actually cancelled this year’s convention.

I would bet my last 5 bucks on this.

Obama will have a press conference in Chicago.

He’s unwilling to face Hillary delagates.

This is truly a coup.

One thing I’ve learned in life is to listen to myself.

I knew it was a coup.

This simply proves it.

Trust me. Cancelling the walk-through is very big news.

Comment by Teakwood | 2008-06-15 20:51:37

The DNC is broke. They can pony up for a revote which is refused by BO, but can’t pay the contract on the convention hall?….What happens then? What do the rules say about not having a convention or if they do…no role call vote?

I smell a demo-rat but are they really that desperately stupid?

We are a united front. The issue is there are different voting strategies. Some groups are focused on still making Hill the nominee. Others want her to go Independent. Still others say write her name in, vote McCain, third party or stay home. However, we are united in that we are all saying No Deal to the “selectee.”

Dear Clinton Dem,

Yesterday’s revelation that Barack Obama is planning to move a large portion of the DNC operations to his home town of Chicago has set off all kinds of alarms at Clinton Dems.

This is disturbing on so many levels. Chicago is widely known for corrupt “Machine Politics” and stokes our worst fear that “The Chicago Machine” is going national. Four of the last seven Governors of Illinois have been indicted for corruption and an effort is already underway to impeach current Governor Blagojevich for activities uncovered during the trial of Obama’s long-time fundraiser Antoin “Tony” Rezko.

The Rezko trial has uncovered a complex network of cronies, and patronage — and a shockingly large number of them have had relationships on some level with Barack Obama. Do we want the appearance, real or imagined, that these corrosive elements will be influencing our party at the most fundamental levels?

A good number of us already suspect that this has been taking place. Please contact Howard Dean and especially all representatives on the Delegate List in your state and tell them that you strongly oppose this move. Express your concern about the direction of the Democratic party.

Of course Fox News loves them. They want to elect conservative Republicans who will cut rich people’s taxes, not pass any health care reform, put more Alitos on the Supreme Court, and keep the war going. Getting McCain elected will help them do that.

We have a long way to go to November and I think we’ll be quite unified, at least as unified as the Republicans because we know WHAT’S AT STAKE:

- The war in Iraq

- Basic rights such as no torture and habeus corpus

- Women’s control over their own bodies

- An expansion of health care for the people

- Fairer tax policy

Keep believing that at your own peril. The Democratic Party is DEAD. BO cannot win without Hillary’s supporters and I don’t know ANY that will vote for BO. I’m not.

He is NOT going to win in November. Not only has he destroyed the Party, the GOP will destroy HIM and he will be a shadow of himself by the time they’re finished with him.

That’s what you get for anointing an unqualified person of questionable character…..President McCain.

Oh yeah, BO’s health care plan is a JOKE and may I suggest you stop throwing out the Roe v. Wade issue? That’s a non-starter. We already know from the BO campaign, their plan was to trash Hillary and women to win any way they could and THEN they would “play the Roe v. Wade card” to bring the women back into the party (direct quote from Chuck Todd who spoke with the BO campaign about that issue).

FORGET IT. If 20-something BO supporters don’t care enough to support the woman who has spent her entire life fighting for women’s rights, why the hell should I? FORGET that wedge issue! It’s not going to work in this election! Women are on to their little game. IT’S OVER. We’re finished being played for fools.

Comment by AnninCa | 2008-06-15 19:17:30

When my friends wring their hands about a McCain presidency, I tell them:

1 - He is the closest thing the Republicans have to a Democrat. Since the Democrats nominated another loser, McCains a good Republican to have in office.

2 - The American government works best when it is balanced. The Democrats control Congress, and they suck. At least the President will prevent them from running the country into the ground.

3 - We are currently in two wars. None of the three candidates has done anything to end the wars, but at least McCain will keep our soldiers safe.

4 - It’s only four years. McCain will make you watch less TV. Enjoy the next four years leading up to the end of the world.

Sure, why shouldn’t he. Win California and the election becomes a complete landslide in his direction. I have no doubt that he’s got the electoral college in the bag but if he wins California and a couple of the swing states then he has a mandate. Then it goes from working with a Dem congress to the Dem congress having to work with him. He’ll be in the drivers seat.

Comment by Democrat | 2008-06-15 19:14:08

This is not 2004 and Obama is a much tougher candidate than Kerry. And McCain has a pretty pathetic campaign organization and a party that is actually more divided. The conservatives don’t trust him, particularly the evangelicals. And there are far fewer Republicans now than Democrats.

Plus McCain’s reputation has waned quite a bit.

John McCain once had the most powerful brand in American politics. He was often called the country’s most popular politician and widely admired for his independent streak. It wasn’t too many years ago that “maverick” was the cliche of choice in describing him.

But that term didn’t even make the list this year when voters were asked by the Pew Research Center to sum up McCain in a single word. “Old” got the most mentions, followed by “honest,” “experienced,” “patriot,” “conservative” and a dozen more. The words “independent,” “change” or “reformer” weren’t among them

Obama delivers tough talk

Probably not the right tone at this point:

He warned that the general election campaign could get ugly. “They’re going to try to scare people. They’re going to try to say that ‘that Obama is a scary guy,’ ” he said. . . .

“If they bring a knife to the fight, we bring a gun,” Obama said. “Because from what I understand folks in Philly like a good brawl. I’ve seen Eagles fans.”

So, on the one hand, Obama accuses Republicans of trying “to scare people.” On the other hand, he employs a metaphor of violence. The metaphor is hardly original — it’s the same sort of macho boasting that pipsqueak wimps like Paul Begala routinely employ. Boasting is seldom a harbinger of success.

Ed Morrisey notes:

Obama not only doesn’t like a good brawl, he can’t even take an open-forum debate unless it takes place on the Home & Garden Channel at 2 am on a holiday weekend.

Republicans DO try to scare people. They did it in the 2002 midterms and in the 2004 election.

Don’t you agree? Or did you think the anti-Max Cleland ads and the Swift Boat ads were all perfectly civil and not part of a scare tactic?

Comment by AnninCa | 2008-06-15 19:28:01

I think the left-wing Democrats are far worse than the Republicans ever thought about being.

For real……I was shocked. I remain shocked that those types consider themselves liberal.

I will not be a part of their party. They may have won, but it’s a very small tent.

“This would have been a little more interesting tonight if Senator Obama had accepted my request,” said McCain, encircled by 200 applauding people inside Wall Street’s Federal Hall. “It’s the opportunity for you to talk to me, as well as for me to talk to you.” - John McCain talking with the American people

Comment by Democrat | 2008-06-15 19:36:36

McCain’s asking for what Hillary Clinton’s opponent for her Senate re-election asked for — free media. She turned him down, just like every winning candidate does.

Meanwhile, Obama has offered more debates/town meetings than have ever been held in any presidential race in American history.

Whatever it is your smoking you need to stop. Obama has turned down town hall meetings with McCain and was SCARED to further debate Hillary.

McCain, Obama fail to agree on town halls

By NEDRA PICKLER, Associated Press Writer Fri Jun 13, 1:27 PM ET

WASHINGTON - Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama on Friday rejected Republican rival John McCain’s proposal for 10 joint town-hall appearances, offering instead to have just one on the July 4 holiday.

Obama campaign manager David Plouffe said he offered to meet McCain in five joint appearances between now and the Nov. 4 election. But only one of those was a town-hall meeting, plus three traditional debates and an in-depth debate on foreign policy.

END QUOTE

In other words, Obama would like to have one “debate” where he could trumpet his antiwar policy and accuse his opponent of running for Bush’s third term. By “traditional debates” he means one where the questions are given ahead of time, and he can meet with his speechwriters about how he will answer. He could shine while reading from a teleprompter.

Instead, Obama has agreed to one town hall on July 4, so he can sell himself as patriotic and at the same time, not too many people will be paying attention.

But here’s the new politics of hope and change.

Plouffe tried to place the blame on McCain for refusing to agree, saying five joint appearances “would have been the most of any presidential campaign in the modern era, offering a broad range of formats and representing a historic commitment to openness and transparency.”

“It’s disappointing that Senator McCain and his campaign decided to decline this proposal. Apparently they would rather contrive a political issue than foster a genuine discussion about the future of our country,” Plouffe said.

Comment by stodghie | 2008-06-16 00:35:49

obama is running from “talking with the american people”. why is that? because he doesn’t do well without a teleprompter or when he doesn’t have an adoring audience.

Obamabots try to scare people with Roe v Wade. If Dubya didn’t overturn it, McCain sure won’t. BO’s little army of acolytes use abortion rights like Bush use 9/11. Big scary.

BO’s disciplines know nothing about McCain, and not much more about BO.

They’ve received their marching orders from the Big Kahuna and they blindly follow them.

Democrat, why don’t you go back to school, maybe take some night classes in political history, learn a few things before you launch a vote that could cost America millions of lives because of a crooked neophyte with no plans.

Comment by Democrat | 2008-06-15 19:38:01

W. would have loved to overturn Roe. But he couldn’t control how many Justices resigned during his presidency.

W. got almost as many Supreme Court Justices as needed to overturn Roe. Just look at the 5-4 votes. If a Republican switches just one of those 5, there goes Roe.

Comment by BluDawg | 2008-06-15 19:51:53

Idiot

SCOTUS put Bush in office.

They would have overturned Roe if he had wanted.

The GOP has no intrest in overturning Roe.

IF they did it would already be gone!

Nice try though!

Not “fair” to scare?

I will not take a fairness argument from Obama.

The RBC removed the Fair Reflection doctrine in favor of Obama.

The Fairness doctrine spoke to the principle of one person one vote.

By creating votes in Michigan where Obama was voluntarily removed from the ballot, the DNC has demonstrated that “fairness” is not a value they agree with.

Go Sell crazy somewhere else.

Fairness to Obama?

The people I know who are Clinton supporters who are mostly feminist activists in the rape crisis center where I volunteer and professors at the local university, many in the women’s studies department. with a smattering of elders, my elderly mother and her friend — they always speak up. They certainly aren’t afraid to tell me — another middle-aged woman — what they think. They certainly told me plenty the last months after I switched to Obama.

And now those strong women are voting for Obama, too (except for one, who definitely not vote for McCain).

That is where you are wrong Democrat. I’m 52, my sisters are 53, 54, and 59. My mother is 79, and all of us are voting for McCain for the simple fact we don’t trust Obama. Nothing to do with party ideologues or anything else Democratic. We aren’t worried about Roe v Wade. We aren’t worried about women’s rights, we’ve lived this long fighting the good fight, and we’ll continue to fight the good fight. My mother as horrified over the treatment of Hillary Clinton. I was flat out pissed off with it and with the obvious bias of the DNC and the media too, of throwing this race to Obama. He did not earn this nomination. It was fixed for him from day one. They did not want another Clinton in the White House and they were going to make sure Clinton didn’t get in. So, now we are faced with the option of who is the next best thing. Obama or McCain? McCain is center right, Obama is far far left. McCain has over 20 years experience and is a war hero himself with a son in the US Marines over in Iraq. Obama has 2 years if you want to actually count up the days he has been in the Senate, and has never served in the military. Who is better qualified to serve as leader of the free world and the only remainig super power? A 2 year novice or a veteran who has 20 years of experience passing legislation under both Republicans and Democratic Presidents and congress? Its McCain all the way. That is what being 52 years old tells me, and what it tells my sisters and my mother.

The people you have described:

I know at least 35 Clinton supporters, the vast majority of whom are women over 50. Some are long time feminist activists. Around half are lesbians. About 5 of them were delegates to my state’s Democratic convention. Around 6 are over 70. That’s who I know.

Sound pretty left and strictly in the Democrat column. These are people who vote for party no matter who the candidate is. You’re the leftist mirror image of the conservative Republican base and probably make up a similar 20% of the voting base.

The majority of Americans are centrists, and John McCain comes across as strong, honest, experienced and likable. Once again Democrats have mistakenly believed they are in touch with the American people. They’re wrong again.

Whatever. I’m soooo over listening to you, I am under no circumstances voting Obambi. I am a young extremely progressive (after this election I want nothing to do with so called progressives) woman who lives in california and will be casting my ballot for a Republican. First time ever.

I’m sure your friends at the rape crisis center understood the blatant sexism and abuse thrown at Mrs. Clinton, and if they with a clean conscience can vote for the abusers, it’s something beyond my comprehension. I will not condone abuse at any level.

Comment by Democrat | 2008-06-15 19:41:46

We know that Obama and his campaign weren’t a part of that sexism.

We also know that no opponent in a nomination contest has ever been expected to defend an opponent. If Obama had done so, he would have been criticized for being patronizing and for acting that a strong woman like Hillary Clinton wasn’t perfectly capable of defending herself.

At 50+, we know that getting a Republican in office would really hurt a lot of women. We lived through Reagan, you know, and now have W., whose policies have damaged an awful lot of people. That’s why we vote — to try to get policies that help folks.

Makes me roll my eyes, for sure.

My great story about the academic feminist. She was so smug and self-riteous. At a departmental party, she announced that she always wore pants because she didn’t shave her legs and thought that was copping out.

There were a couple of secretaries around, heard her, and said, “Well, you can’t be too much of a feminist or you wouldn’t feel the need to hide your legs with hair under pants, now would you?!”

Academic department secretaries aren’t dummies and are vastly underrated.

I loved it.

Comment by Democrat | 2008-06-15 19:51:31

Yeah, the secretaries (we call them adminsitrative assistants), they’re also voting for Obama. They need health care reform and they know that McCain most certainly won’t do anything for them. And their sons and nephews and nieces and daughters who are in the military — they want them home. McCain would keep them there and doesn’t even want them to have decent education benefits.

With all the experience some at this site think McCain has, well, he’ll do a great job promoting his policies — keeping the Iraq war going, spending money on permanent bases in Iraq rather than health care, putting anti-choice judges on the court, you know, all the things he wants to accomplish.

Wonderful interview! Thank you Diane! I think the point you made in the end about why you won’t entertain the idea of supporting Obama because he has less experience than Hillary Clinton and John Mccain, should be the theme and motto of the nodeal and puma organizations. From the beginning of the primaries I kept insisting that people supporting HRC would have an easier time supporting Mccain rather than Obama because they are looking for experience and a proven track record.
To me another inexperienced president is worse than another republican president. I think Pumas and Nodeal may get more attention from the media and the DNC if this is the main argument. I agree that there was plenty of sexism and media bias, but it doesn’t seem to be selling our cause.

Comment by imustprotest | 2008-06-15 20:16:21

I agree with most of what you said, except I think the sexism angle is what the media is now interested in. Experience argument isn’t juicy enough for them.

Comment by AnninCa | 2008-06-15 20:30:29

Whose paying attention to the media now, anyway?

Frankly, I think the blogs give the media the power. I really do.

They lost 17 million viewers on network news last year. NOBODY is watching. LOL*

We need to put the media into perspective. They are minor players.

The biggest selling point for Obama is the fear over Roe versus Wade. Any other woman here tired of this fear card? I sure am.

The biggest selling point for McCain is his experience and foreign policy.

Obama is still a pig in the poke for voters.

McCain is the security vote.

Nobody trusts Obama. We certainly don’t even like his supporters.

Nobody really likes McCain. We certainly aren’t impressed with his personal life values.

It’s a wash.

I have always said, it comes down to your personal priorities for the presidency. I think people reelected Bush, a very unpopular president, because they did not want the guys in Iraq to suffer more. Change means more soldiers die. We know that.

Bush won because of that.

So we’re faced again with priorities.

I hate the worst of the Patriot Act crap. I don’t see McCain as a big war-monger. I think he does support Iraq. I think he truly believes the surge is working.

I hate the Democratic Party today. It’s foul. Smelly. Not worthy.

I still don’t know what I will do.

I just know. The Democrats are dirty.

This is an excellent article on Roe v Wade by Michael C. Dorf, a FindLaw columnist, who is a professor of law at Columbia University School of Law.

If media are “interested” in that argument it is because it is self-defeating.

Comment by imustprotest | 2008-06-15 20:48:05

I don’t see how it’s self-defeating, it got Diane interviewed plus others, not to mention a whole movement started. Oh yeah, and the sexism was real, it needs to be discussed.

whinging about -isms and bias is utterly counterproductive.

My God why can’t people see that? When the Obamanates complain of racism, or the Neocons of antisemitism, what is your knee-jerk reaction? And how does anybody imagine that whinging on and on and on and on about misogyny/sexism, is any different? Doesn’t matter how true it is.

Comment by Hope Floats | 2008-06-15 21:42:18

Whining about whining makes you the biggest asshole of them all.

Who was that tart being interviewed???!!!! She is opposing Obama because he is less qualified than Obama?!!?? That IS sour grapes!!! How about this?? DENNIS KUCINICH IS VASTLY MORE QUALIFIED THAN OBAMA OR CLINTON!!! And he didn’t even get the damn right to debate!!! Take your poor little woe is me story elsewhere. Kucinich was the only candidate not bought and owned by big corporations and who doesn’t have a portfolio of corruption that stretches from here to Little Rock. Where were you cry babies when he got OUTED??!!! Trying to pass Hillary Clinton off as a poor, victimized folk hero. PUH-Lease!! MAKES ME GAG!!

Hey Doomandgloom, what did she do that makes you call her a tart? If you have a DENNIS KUCINICH hard on go start your on site jerk.

Comment by imustprotest | 2008-06-15 20:59:29

by the way, sour grapes isn’t the appropriate term here…sour grapes is when you pretend you really didn’t want something because you failed to get it.

Comment by Hope Floats | 2008-06-15 21:43:42

Obama supporters have misused the term so much that the stupid media has accepted the new definition.

Comment by Pink Panther | 2008-06-15 22:15:13

Ohhhhhhh, the Obama babies are scared. doomandgloom, did the bright lady on the tv. make you sad and cry?

If you think that was sad, wait until you see how many people are joining PUMA and will vote against obama in November.

Comment by John House | 2008-06-15 23:17:57

Good G-d, Ed, is that you? I pointed to this site for you for information, not for you to start some crazy pro-Kucinich b.s.

Comment by Andrea | 2008-06-15 20:25:32

I think that because the charge of sexism and media bias is essentially aimed at them, the media and DNC, they are less likely to take it seriously. I am not saying that aspect should be dropped, but I think they would take the experience factor more seriously, as they just don’t care about sexism - to them it will always be sour grapes.

Comment by imustprotest | 2008-06-15 20:35:20

It’s because the MSM is sexist that they want to interview PUMAS so they can mock us and say we’re just sore losers. But it gives us the forum to explain all of our reasons to say NODEAL.

Comment by SUGAR | 2008-06-15 20:44:29

I’m glad they are getting some good media exposure. Let these idiots know we mean business because no matter whether some of us vote McCain, stay home or write Hillary in, Obama still feels that pain. Enough is enough of the Democratic party taking us for granted. We have been abused this election in ways I never thought possible. Now, we fight back.

Comment by alee21 | 2008-06-15 20:56:37

What’s the next step after the media buzz?

Since PumaPac is a 527 they should be able to take ads out to take Obama down. Maybe sooner rather than later if there is any chance for Hillary to get back on the ballot. 18 million people disagreed with the Party’s choice so we have strength in numbers.

Comment by imustprotest | 2008-06-15 21:03:43

Yes, plenty of material for the ads!

Comment by sakel | 2008-06-15 21:04:00

Diane Mantouvalos, you are incredibly perceptive, prophetic and correct!
“The party is fractured” indeed and your site “Just Say No Deal” is a phenomenally vital and timely organization that is far more popular than you can imagine! Hillary got more respect from McCain (consistently) than the misogynist Obama supporters who pushed their limping candidate to the superdel finish line with an able assist from the media frat-boys.

“I have no doubt that Sen. Hillary Clinton will make a great President”—Sen. McCain 2005, Bahgdad, responding to the late Tim Russert, Meet the Press.

Senator Obama: “Her claws are coming out. Periodically, she feels low, gets moody and launches attacks” See his YuTube mega-hit:

“Obama Gives HIllary the Finger” —that’s change we can believe in, eh Barack!

Comment by paraskeve | 2008-06-15 21:07:28

I saw Obama’s disrespectful Youtube hit:

‘OBAMA GIVES HILLARY THE FINGER’ and it was incredibly sexist and disgusting. My 14-year old son explained to me that Obama “flip-offed” HIllary in full view than did a JayZ rapper act dusting off Hillary clinton from his shoulders and “scraping the s*it” off his shoes. Is this Junior High smug arrogant teenie bopper really going to be …President!?? Help!!!!

Comment by paraskeve | 2008-06-15 21:11:02

THANK YOU, DIANE MANTOUVALOS!

You go, girl! Rage agaisnt the Obamyopics’ killing off the Light…Let the light shine in from beneath these 18 million cracks!!!!!Fight back against Dean’s new Chicago thuggery…Don’t let Hussein knock off the ballot yet another Sen. Alice Palmer..

Comment by Tricia | 2008-06-15 21:32:19

This is wonderful - I see so many people organizing against Obama I just can’t imagine there is a precedent for this- is there? This is my first involvement in a primary so I’m not sure if this is normal or as I suspect not typical.

Can someone also pls tell me why Taylor Marsh is saying that Hillary will suffer the consequences if Obama is not elected? What is she talking about? I used to go to her site all the time, but she has turned into an Obamabot - amazing what a traitor!

Comment by John House | 2008-06-15 23:21:57

Taylor is in it for pro-Dem ratings and nothing else. She doesn’t understand the methodology of making/letting Obama fail so Hillary can succeed in 2012.

I don’t understand the traitors who spent so many months ripping Obama down only to support him now because of “the party”. Bullshit, and it’s almost as much bullshit as those idiots who came right out and said “I believe Clinton is the best candidate, but I’m supporting Obama anyway”.

Comment by stodghie | 2008-06-16 00:49:02

taylor marsh has her head in the wrong position on her body. i am beginning to think it is all about her. jeralyn at talk left will support the democratic nominee. she said it all along and i respect that. she reserves the right to disagree and criticize. and she sure doesn’t let crap fly like hillary will suffer the consequences, blah, blah, blah. taylor, you did a good job for awhile, not please shut up.

Comment by beachnan | 2008-06-15 21:53:20

I love these outspoken people. PUMA Rocks!!! Keep speaking out. I just read on someone’s blog, that a couple of superdelegates e-mailed someone back, with the comment, that she and others have not given up on Hillary, and to keep writing, and sending articles, and don’t give up. Help retire Hillary’s debt, so that she will owe the Obama campaign nothing, and to let the DNC know that we are still here, and we are still backing our candidate. It is a long time until August, and anything can happen. I am 53, my mother is 76, my 2 daughters are 25 and 28-all huge Hillary supporters. If it can’t be Hillary this year, then we will vote McCain. BTW, just attended a party and everyone there, about 15 of us, and not is going to vote BO. Keep up the great work everyone. Hillary 08, or McCain.

I’m nearly 65 and my husband is 61, we have never missed a vote and we won’t this year. Although we will be writing Hillory in on our ballots. The electoral college has gone just too far this time. THEY are the ones who put Obama in, not the popular vote. WE, the Americans of this country, voted for Hillory and no one else is going to get our vote…not this time. Bunch of bullies.

PUMA = Bush supporters

plain and simple,

People lose elections all the time, move on, get on board to help advace your values not your ego
