A Follow-Up Zinger to TexasDarlin’s “Cash Woes for BHO and DNC”

The following remarks were made, and reported by the Chicago Sun-Times reporter Lynn Sweet, at the Philadelphia fundraiser that an apparently cash-strapped Barack Obama insisted on holding even though Gov. Ed Rendell warned him it was a summer weekend. As TexasDarlin noted in her post immediately preceding mine, quoting USA Today, Obama’s insistence on holding the event was “a sign of the urgency to raise campaign cash.”
Philadelphia mayor Michael Nutter and Pennslvania governor Ed Rendell spoke before Barack Obama, and said, Lynn Sweet reports:
“I gave Sen. Clinton $1,500 in the primary so I thought just for old-time sake I’d give Sen. Obama $1,499,” Rendell said, sparking scattered boos from the crowd. The governor calmed them by saying “that was before I drank the Kool-Aide.” He said that he has a check for $2,300 to give the Obama campaign.
Sweet then reports that this is what Barack Obama said immediately afterwards:
“We’re going to make sure this doesn’t bounce,” Obama said as he took the podium.
This is such a rude, classless remark, I am nearly left speechless.
What other descriptions can we come up with?
Tacky?
Tasteless?
Insulting?
Most of all, there wasn’t a word of thanks in that statement for the donation of the full amount that Gov. Rendell gave to this candidate even though the governor had worked his tail off for Hillary Clinton.
Well, we can look at Obama’s next remarks about Gov. Rendell:
He then said it was a “relief” to have Ed Rendell (”a man who has no shortage for words”) on his side. “How many cable shows can you be on at one time?” Obama asked Rendell, adding that he is “one of the finest governors in the country.”
Obama said Rendell’s presence was a “relief”? And that he wanted to know, from Rendell, “How many cable shows can you be on at one time?”
In other words, acknowledging Gov. Rendell’s affable and intelligent presence on numerous cable shows were a great asset to Hillary Clinton, Obama wanted to know how much he could use Rendell to do the same for him.
What can you do for ME, Governor Rendell?
Then, finally, he made a generic positive remark about him being “one of the finest governors.” After the insults about the check not bouncing, after the odd remark that Rendell’s presence was a “relief” to him, and after asking Rendell just how useful he’d be to Obama.
It’s just not the kind of class I expect in a candidate for the presidency, and almost all of it was said in the context of what Rendell could do to help him with only the slightest acknowledgement of Rendell’s considerable abilities as a governor, not any recognition of Rendell’s past fine works for the Democratic party or for Hillary Clinton.
Or any humble appreciation for Governor Rendell appearing at a weekend event after his own exhausting schedule as a superb surrogate for Hillary Clinton or his own personal sacrifice in not being with his own family that night, but instead sacrificing a weekend evening to help an ungrateful candidate solely interested in himself and what everybody else can do to make him more powerful.

Suggest you add other material in the prepaid envelope which will require additional postage to paid by the Obama campaign. Maybe such things as negative newspaper articles, if you can find any, about Obama and/or his followers or positive articles on the Clintons, again if you can find any in the news media. Or, if nothing else just put a bunch more junk mail in the envelope when returning it. Don’t imagine any of his campaign staff would waste time looking at the stuff but at least it would increase the amount of postage the campaign has to pay in getting the envelope returned.
Stick a few washers in the envelope. Nice and heavy.

I would suspect that the Clinton campaign sold the Obama campaign its mailing lists. That’s common practice in politics and a way to retire debt, assuming that it’s considered a fair exchange of value. Otherwise it could be construed as a donation subject to limits.
I haven’t gotten anything from Obama. I am not on any Democratic list except a few candidates like Hillary. If she sold her list I should be getting stuff like everyone else, and I’m not.

Obama not qualified to run under Constitutional Law Found the following regarding Obama’s birth:CAN OBAMA BE PRESIDENT?
It seems that Barack Obama is not qualified to be president after all for the following reason:
Barack Obama is not legally a U.S. natural-born citizen according to the law on the books at the time of his birth, which falls between “December 24, 1952to November 13, 1986.
Presidential office requires a natural-born citizen if the child was not born to two U.S. citizen parents, which of course is what exempts John McCain though he was born in the Panama Canal.
US Law very clearly stipulates: “If only one parent was a U.S. citizen at the time of your birth, that parent must have resided in the United States for at least ten years, at least five of which had to be after the age of 16.”
Barack Obama’s father was not a U.S. citizen and Obama’s mother was only 18 when Obama was born, which means, though she had been a U.S. citizen for 10 years, (or citizen perhaps because of Hawaii being a territory) the mother fails the test for being so for at least 5 years **prior to** Barack Obama’s birth, but *after* age 16. It doesn’t matter *after*.
In essence, she was not old enough to qualify her son for automatic U.S. citizenship. At most, there were only 2 years elapsed since his mother turned 16 at the time of Barack Obama’s birth when she was 18 in Hawaii. His mother would have needed to have been 16+5= 21 years old, at the time of Barack Obama’s birth for him to have been a natural-born citizen.
As aforementioned, she was a young college student at the time and was not. Barack Obama was already 3 years old at that time his mother would have needed to have waited to have him as the only U.S. Citizen parent. Obama instead should have been naturalized, but even then, that would still disqualify him from holding the office.
*** Naturalized citizens are ineligible to hold the office of President. *** Though Barack Obama was sent back to Hawaii at age 10, all the other info does not matter because his mother is the one who needed to have been a U.S. citizen for 10 years prior to his birth on August 4, 1961, with 5 of those years being after age 16. Further, Obama may have had to have remained in the country for some time to protect any citizenship he would have had, rather than living in Indonesia. Now you can see why Obama’s aides stopped his speech about how we technically have more than 50 states, because it would have led to this discovery. This is very clear cut and a blaring violation of U.S. election law.
I think the Gov. of California would be very interested in knowing this if Obama were elected President without being a natural-born U.S. citizen, and it would set precedence. Stay tuned to your TV sets because I suspect some of this information will be leaking through over the next several days.

‘Obama’s Chicago Boys’ by Naomi Klein
Barack Obama waited just three days after Hillary Clinton pulled out of the race to declare, on CNBC, “Look. I am a pro-growth, free-market guy. I love the market.” Demonstrating that this is no mere spring fling, he has appointed 37-year-old Jason Furman to head his economic policy team. Furman is one of Wal-Mart’s most prominent defenders, anointing the company a “progressive success story.”
On the campaign trail, Obama blasted Clinton for sitting on the Wal-Mart board and pledged, “I won’t shopthere.” For Furman, however, it’s Wal-Mart’s critics who are the real threat: the “efforts to get Wal-Mart to raise its wages and benefits” are creating “collateral damage” that is “way too enormous and damaging to working people and the economy more broadly for me to sit by idly and sing ‘Kum-Ba-Ya’ in the interests of progressive harmony.” Obama’s love of markets and his desire for “change” are not inherently incompatible. “The market has gotten out of balance,” he says, and it most certainly has. Many trace this profound imbalance back to the ideas of Milton Friedman, who launched a counterrevolution against the New Deal from his perch at the University of Chicago economics department.
And here there are more problems, because Obama “who taught law at the University of Chicago for a decade” is thoroughly embedded in the mind-set known as the Chicago School. He chose as his chief economic adviser Austan Goolsbee, a University of Chicago economist on the left side of a spectrum that stops at the center-right. Goolsbee, unlike his more Friedmanite colleagues, sees inequality as a problem. His primary solution, however, is “more education” a line you can also get from Alan Greenspan. In their hometown, Goolsbee has been eager to link Obama to the Chicago School. “If you look at his platform, at his advisers, at his temperament, theguy’s got a healthy respect for markets,” he told Chicago magazine. “It’s in the ethos of the [University of Chicago], which is something different from saying he is laissez-faire.”
Another of Obama’s Chicago fans is 39-year-old billionaire Kenneth Griffin, CEO of the hedge fund Citadel Investment Group. Griffin, who gave the maximum allowable donation to Obama, is something of a posterboy for an unbalanced economy. He got married at Versailles and had the after-party at Marie Antoinette’s vacation spot (Cirque du Soleil performed), and he is one of the staunchest opponents of closing the hedge-fund tax loophole.
While Obama talks about toughening trade rules with China, Griffin has been bending the few barriers that do exist. Despite sanctions prohibiting the sale of police equipment to China, Citadel has been pouring money into controversial China-based security companies that are putting the local population under unprecedented levels of surveillance. Now is the time to worry about Obama’s Chicago Boys and their commitment to fending off serious attempts at regulation.
It was in the two and a half months between winning the 1992 election and being sworn into office that Bill Clinton did a U-turn on the economy. He had campaigned promising to revise NAFTA, adding labor and environmental provisions and to invest in social programs. But two weeks before his inauguration, he met with then-Goldman Sachs chief Robert Rubin, who convinced him of the urgency of embracing austerity and more liberalization. Rubin told PBS, “President Clinton actually made the decision before he stepped into the Oval Office, during the transition, on what was a dramatic change in economic policy.” Furman, a leading disciple of Rubin, was chosen to head the Brookings Institution’s Hamilton Project, the think tank Rubin helped found to argue for reforming, rather than abandoning, the free-trade agenda. Add to that Goolsbee’s February meeting with Canadian consulate officials, who left with the distinct impression that they had been instructed not to take Obama’s anti-NAFTA campaigning seriously, and there is every reason for concern about a replay of 1993.
The irony is that there is absolutely no reason for this backsliding. The movement launched by Friedman, introduced by Ronald Reagan and entrenched under Clinton, faces a profound legitimacy crisis around the world. Nowhere is this more evident than at the University of Chicago itself. In mid-May, when university president Robert Zimmer announced the creation of a $200 million Milton Friedman Institute, an economic research center devoted to continuing and augmenting the Friedman legacy, a controversy erupted. More than 100 faculty members signed a letter of protest. “The effects of the neoliberal global order that has been put in place in recent decades, strongly buttressed by the Chicago School of Economics, have by no means been unequivocally positive,” the letter states. “Many would argue that they have been negative for much of the world’s population.”
When Friedman died in 2006, such bold critiques of his legacy were largely absent. The adoring memorials spoke only of grand achievement, with one of the more prominent appreciations appearing in the New York Times written by Austan Goolsbee. Yet now, just two years later, Friedman’s name is seen as a liability even at his own alma mater. So why has Obama chosen this moment, when all illusions of a consensus have dropped away, to go Chicago retro? The news is not all bad. Furman claims he will be drawing on the expertise of two Keynesian economists: Jared Bernstein of the Economic Policy Institute and James Galbraith, son of Friedman’s nemesis John Kenneth Galbraith. Our “current economic crisis,” Obama recently said, did not come from nowhere. It is “the logical conclusion of a tired and misguided philosophy that has dominated Washington for far toolong.” True enough. But before Obama can purge Washington of the scourge of Friedmanism, he has some ideological housecleaning of his own to do.
Maybe Obama’s comment was referring to the fact that Clinton campaign had been stiffing their vendors with bad checks.

I love Ed Rendell. He’s a man of enormous political talent and influence, terrifically popular in the tri-state area. He is not a man you disrespect if you want regional votes. There will be a huge backlash if Obama continues in this direction.

No need to apologize. Try looking at all of this from a different perspective. It there were no parties and everyone was an independent, would you still vote for Obama? I would not. Though I believe he’s an opportunist (most politician are) and dishonest, his views on the economy and socialism do not match-up with mine.
Sometime protest (in any form) is the only way people can express their views and to know that someone out there may see things in the same way (insults aside). The alternative is to sit there and do nothing. That doesn’t help anyone.

I like this comment. It gets to the heart of the matter. I’ve heard many times that no one is above the law. But we never hear the last part which is that no law is above its people (and that this is why we have democracy). Principles is where laws should come from. And principles come from the people. So when Obama and his supporters yell “the roolz”, they’re saying that they have no principles and that principles have no place in the process to the shock and amazement of Hillary supporters.
The really funny part is that Obama supporters are blind to this. It’s like a different world to them, incomprehensible and alien. To them, they want someone to suddenly fix everything. Yet they don’t realise that true change takes time and this is exactly how the system is set up by the founding Fathers.

The problem was that FL’s legislature is controlled by Republicans and with a Republican Governor. The State of FL does not answer to the DNC. FL was not to lose votes UNLESS the DNC proved by clear and convincing evidence that the Democrats did not act in good faith.
The FL Democrats wrote an amendment to push back the primary date and the Repubs rejected it. The Gov also pubically stated that he would veto ANY change to move the primary date.
There was NOTHING FL Democrats could do.
The DNC called FL democrats “defiant.”
Obama is on record telling Florida that he was sure he’d be able to make sure their votes counted.
He then ran ads non-stop. Yep, he got “permission.” He was such a loser at that point, nobody cared.
He violated the “rulz” right and left.
Just received a mail solicitation from “Obama for America.” WTF? Sounds like “Connecticut for Lieberman” to me – a fake, made-up “Unity Party.”
I sent it back to him with “P.U.M.A.” written across it in big, black letters.
May his money woes continue and may the DNC crumble under the weight of its own corruption.
Hope if it had a prepaid envelope with it that you included additional material, junk, etc. in the envelope to make Obama’s campaign pay additional postage to get their envelope back.

I have never hated B. Obama. I think that he is not electable in General. His winning the caucuses in out of the way states, sometimes by out-of-state thuggery, may have been a good primary tactic, but it means jack in the end.

Gov. Rendell is a stand up guy as is the new Mayor Nutter. Ed is great with words and no doubt, there was a ‘hidden message’ there about the $1499 comment.
Ed can hold his own and is a beloved fan of the Eagles and loves the city of Philadelphia where he was the former Mayor.
One thing you can take to the bank. Folks in Philly forget nothing – they can hold a grudge forever and always fight for the underdog. They are tough and fighters, and they will not take to someone insulting their Governor.
For Obama to make such cracks shows he is not polished. If he makes cracks like this to people in his own unified party, how will he represent us to the world when he meets with Iran, Cuba, Russia?
Can you imagine the worldwide headlines that will result? We thought we couldn’t do worse with Bush and his soundbites – Obama will give the late night hosts lots and lost of material.
There is NO WAY Obama will take PA. Like ‘Democrat’ I have many female and male friends (gay, straight, young, old) and a 90 year old grandmother – they ALL wanted Hillary and will NOT vote Obama. They have no intention of voting for Obama – they will be voting for McCain.
I was at the Hillary rally the night before the PA primary. As I looked around the crowd, I saw all demographics represented.
Let’s not forget, Sen. Specter is a Republican as was former Gov. Tom Ridge and Sen. Santorum. PA does vote Republican! I can’t see where these polls are getting their data from that says Obama is winning in PA. Are they only polling in Philadelphia?
PA for the most part is a Conservative Republican state .. oh and don’t forget, we’re the ones that cling to our religion and guns too!
I love Nutter. I fell for him back when he said how he decided to back Hillary. It was a thoughtful decision.
But I really fell for him when he said, “I don’t care if I’m the last man standing. I’m standing my decision.”

So Barky-O’s campaign was flush during the primaries, and now all of a sudden the DNC’s in a cash crunch. I hadn’t expected his Republican “backers” to put him out to dry so early on, but come to think of it why should they continue throwing money at him now that they’ve got what they want? Besides, the sudden withdrawal of money and the aftermath thereof will choke off a lot of down-ticket Democrats, which can’t hurt the strategy.

Rendell has thicker skin than BO. Love that he referenced the “Kool-Aide”. He knows a cult of fools when he sees one. They are sort of teasing each other in a passive agressive way, but the animosity shows through.
I think so, too, Ken. Hillary paid attention to Rendell. She took his advice. She won 2 major counties that should have been Obama’s….creative class (upper-middle-class). Why? She paid attention to Rendell’s advice on how to campaign there.
Obama ignored the consultant from PA who told him not to dump so much money into TV ads and pay the street people.
In spite of outspending her 3 to 1 or 4 to 1, depending on the article you read, he lost. He never even made a dent there.
