POLL: Obama Unelectable in Arkansas

I am one of those Democrats who actually enjoys winning an election from time to time. Other Democrats, particularly recent Republican converts and others who fashion themselves “Libertarian Democrats,” prefer to lose, which is why they support Barack Obama. Many of these recent arrivals to my Party support him in order to climb some imaginary political social ladder. Thinking of themselves, they can care less if the working poor suffer for another four years. Then there are the low information voters who have no idea why they support Barack Obama. Although they cannot be faulted, they can be held accountable.

Above average voters, the citizens of Arkansas are different. Indeed, 56% of voters in Arkansas surveyed in a Rasmussen Reports poll released today understand what we have been arguing for months: Barack Obama is too inexperienced to serve as President of the United States. This may explain why 54% of Arkansans still have an unfavorable opinion of Barack Obama. How can one win a state when over half of its residents view you with an unfavorable regard, especially when 57% of those voters view your Republican opponent favorably?

Obama trails McCain in Arkansas 39% to 48%, and only 69% of Arkansas Democrats plan to vote for the presumptive Democratic nominee. Compare this to the last hypothetical matchup between Hillary Clinton and John McCain on 12 MAY 2008, when Clinton trounced McCain 59% to 39%. The Arkansas Times could not be more succinct in the article they published on 12 JUNE 2008: Democrats “likely will be hard-pressed to win the state in November’s general election” now that Hillary Clinton is not the presumptive nominee.

Is this how Democrats win elections? Do we win elections by conceding entire states? This appears to be the Democrats’ strategy, which may explain why Obama and McCain are locked in a statistical dead heat at a time in the cycle when Democrats are normally leading their opponents by double digit margins.

Superdelegates still have a chance to nominate the electable Democrat. Will they do it? Or will they hand Arkansas and its six electoral votes over to the Republicans? Because I am interested in winning elections, I hope they will cast their votes for Hillary Clinton at the convention in Denver.

Will Coward Dean let them vote at the convention?

Comment by Danny | 2008-06-16 16:41:37

It’s true Clinton was stronger than Obama in Arkansas. It’s also not very interesting, since there are 49 other states voting. In some of them, Clinton ran stronger against McCain (AR, OH, WV, FL), and in others Obama ran stronger against McCain (IA, CO, WA, WI…). Isolating one state as a predictor of the election is pretty silly.

Comment by Andy Lewis | 2008-06-16 20:17:40

So is spewing forth Obamite rubbish – especially here.

Comment by Danny | 2008-06-17 17:07:39

My post was not “rubbish.” You can’t make a general election argument from one state in isolation.

And my post was not “Obamite.” The argument is just as bad if you said that Obama is more electable because he leads McCain in Iowa, where Clinton frequently polled behind McCain.

The key, Plouffe told supporters, will be to register new black voters and new young voters in Virginia.

Likewise, Georgia has many unregistered black voters who could turn out in record numbers to support the first major-party nominee who is black, he argued. Plouffe said the campaign also will keep an eye on Mississippi and Louisiana as the race moves into the fall to see if new black voters could put them within reach.

This whole election is riding on blacks and young voters. Can I just tell you the Rocky Mountain West argument is far-fetched: North Dakota, Alaska, New Mexico, Nevada, and Montana will likely stay red.

Comment by Paul F. Villarreal | 2008-06-16 08:12:01

This is why it’s critical that every HRC supporter — that is, those who don’t want a fascist Dem party and who make up the majority of the party — don’t vote for Bambi and preferably vote for McCain. We easily outnumber any supposedly new voters that the Bambi camp can round up and we need to stay in solidarity so that we ensure the reclamation of our party following Bambi’s defeat.

We hold the power of this election, period. Bambi’s crew knows it and so do we.

Bye-bye, Bambi. Back to the Senate with you.

I am amazed that so many people think that the AA population can put Obama over the top. People seem to think AAs make up about a third of the US population or more rather than the 12-13% they are (Hispanics are 18%). They are mislead by living in cities where the AA population is much higher and by the fact that this was such a big factor in the Dem primaries. The media rarely bothered to point out that this was because almost all AA’s are Dems and in some states like South and North Carolina are the largest voting block for the Dem party 30-40%).

In contrast, those pesky women that Donna Brazile seems to think the party can afford to alienate make up over 50% percent of the entire US population, making them the biggest group of all. In addition they are the largest group in the Dem party and vote in larger percentages than does any other group.

The media, as usual, has failed to inform the public of this reality.

Comment by whosetruth | 2008-06-16 08:48:19

If the only way to get AAs to register and vote is to offer an AA candidate doesn’t that label them racist?

Of course not, silly. This makes THEM proud, we’re the racist part of the party.

Well, newsflash…Yes, this IS racist.

Comment by Hope Floats | 2008-06-16 08:59:54

92% of AA’s voting in the Dem primaries didn’t seem too racist to me, actually, but the idea that they don’t bother to vote until they see black skin on the ballot bothers me. We really are living in two Americas.

Comment by TimNCGuy | 2008-06-16 09:56:51

I guess Obama has a chance in NM and Nevada. But, the last polls that included Clinton had her leading McCain in both NM and NV as well. So, what difference does it make if Obama MIGHT win those, Clitnon was winning those PLUS FL, WV, KY, OH, PA and even NC

Comment by ken | 2008-06-16 12:36:22

When hard cold reality hits that they don’t know what the heck they are doing, they’ll come around to “offer” Hillary the VP because she can “help” them win. Laughable. She wins all by her herself with pretty much any VP choice not named BO.

It has to be Hillary in the GE.

I thought i read that Dean was manuevering to ensure that there is no roll call vote this convention.

Comment by ken | 2008-06-16 12:40:32

There’s the real world and there’s the Dean world where BO will be supported unanimously by the adoring crowd of (carefully chosen) democrats at the (carefully orchetrated media propaganda event) convention.

Comment by sowsear | 2008-06-16 08:16:11

As Dean said yesterday in an e-mail response, “Anyone in nomination will be on the first ballot” Key words here are in nomination >/b> . What if no one is able to put HRC’s name into nomination or get it seconded; what if most of her delegates are replaced, as some already have been?

Comment by marisa | 2008-06-16 05:15:57

No, of course Arkansas delegates can’t vote! Not at the Convention and not in the GE.

The Democrats have arranged the General Election so that only Illinois counts.

Comment by Lou | 2008-06-16 11:36:34

Here’s a great compolation of all that went on with the delegates in every state.
It’s all here and why we want this to DENVER. This is definitely something that Howard Dean (and his fellow voting crooks) doesn’t want the American public to know about! I hope they’re nervous as hell, because we’re MAD as hell, and need to stand up to this. soory I don’t have a tiny url. but add the H t t p in front.

Comment by Lou | 2008-06-16 11:58:31

Sorry for the typos. posting too fast.

My main concern is that he rigs the GE too.
The tell-tale sign is not only his smugness, but also when he says he is registering more AA’s and youth so he can justify the “extra” votes that don’t really exist I (my words). I thought they were all registered already as much as possible. Only 48% AA’s actually vote. A percentage are Republican. There is not a large amount of votes from this block. The youth have moved on. They have other things to do than to vote. The only consistent voters are the Dem boomers who make up a large part of the voting block. Funny how they said they didn’t need us. With many more years of voting left under our belts, they have cut off their noses to spite thier face.
Why would we follow what MO says and give up a piece of our pie so she can have more? Carl Marx is not what this country was founded on and we are in no mood to switch to Marxism. Have these people ever had a mental evaluation? I mean they sound and act like they are mentally ill.
Hillary’s plan would have covered that too. {{smile}}

It will be just as I said. Look who is controlling the Party. We have got to get those idiots out of there. Don’t vote in anyone who voted against Hillary. To me the ones that backed Obama have joined the little socialist click the Dem party has become and we have to get rid of them. Remember what the famous Notre Dame coach said..”NO ONE, NOT NO ON, COMES INTO OUR HOUSE AND PUSHES US AROUND!” It is time for Dean, Pelosi, Biden, McCaskill, Richardson, Brzile , Reid and others to hit the road. They will never let Hillary even go up for nomination. There is not going to be a roll call and only Obama gets to be voted on. Also I got email that we need to contact our reps and get them to sign petiton to get the Broadcasters Freedom Act passed. It will PROTECT US. It basically says that the president can not control the airwaves or the media. The email said no dems will sign it and if they don’t what we see and hear will be controlled on Tv, radio, and internet…this is getting scary…write your reps to tell them to vote for it. We have to fight this from all sides and to stop this Socialists agenda.

Comment by Uppity Woman | 2008-06-16 08:54:47

I hope they do more of this on TV. The electorate is becoming horrified. They will be tripping over each other to go vote against the man they cannot vett for fear of being called racist. Their eyes will be rolling everytime they hear the race card again. This is over. Obama got a bump that was the smallest bump I have EVER seen in my not too short life. The man will not win. He WILL be vetted. He will be waving his arms and jumping up and down and screaming and telling people they had “better watch out,” but he WILL be vetted. Nobody knows this man except for what HE tells us. That is not now, nor will it ever be acceptable to the electorate. We don’t elect mysteries to the oval office.

Comment by sjc-tx | 2008-06-16 09:58:40

He is a NOVELTY! Nothing else. ANYONE can SAY what he does… But he has absolutely NOTHING to back it up! This is what is so astounding! The DNC, et al are so thrilled to have this piece of ‘kitch’ on their coffee table, that they have blinkered themsleves to reality!!!

Comment by Mary | 2008-06-16 21:13:39

The DNC was screwed the minute they allowed Barak Obama and his minions to paint William Jefferson Clinton as a racist and to trash his legacy.

Comment by marisa | 2008-06-16 05:21:33

I’m joking, but sadly, I would not be surprised if it were the case.

The whole primary has been marked by disenfranchisement, and DNC anointment rather than actual democracy.

I just hope that Repubs are keeping an eye on the votes of the dead. Right now, Obama leads in that demographic 100% to 0%.

Comment by rob (Formerly) in toronto | 2008-06-16 05:24:05

You might also mention that neither Gore not Kerry carried Arkansas…Gore lost by about 6% and Kerry by 9%.

Of course that would mess up your narrative.

This election is not going to be decided by the people of the great state of Arkansas. Sorry, it just isn’t going to be that close. It will either be a McCain blowout as the racists and loons come out of the closet or it will be a 100+ Electoral vote win for Obama. I just do not see any other possible outcome.

Polls 5 months out are nearly meaningless except to look at, in retrospect, as a historical record. Everyone that pays attention to such things knows that and I am frankly astonished that anyone cares what the numbers are as of yet.

Call me on September 20th if the numbers are still crappy but until then how about we stop with the “unelectable” BS and actually talk about which of McCain’s policies are better than Obama’s. And no, “not enough experience” isn’t really a good talking point because Hillary loses in that one to McCain too.

Comment by Susan | 2008-06-16 05:38:12

The Dem nominee doesn’t need to have more experience than the Rep nominee, he just needs to have some. Everybody has a their own bar that the candidates need to overcome to gain their vote – and 2 years in the senate just doesn’t do it for a lot of people. At least Clinton and Edwards completed their first term, which passed the bar for me. I am not looking for them to beat McCain in years of experience, just to have a sufficient amount of it to please me.

Comment by Ai1een | 2008-06-16 05:39:04

Rob, if you’re still in Canada or now living in the US do you even have the right to vote in this election. Frankly your opinion matters little to me – probably most of us, actually. Barry has no experience and that is actually the least of his problems. He may not even be eligble to run. Anyone see his birth certificate yet?

Comment by Hope Floats | 2008-06-16 07:47:17

He sounds like either a returning ex-pat or liar. It’s like, “Hi, I have just returned from the Great White North, and I have an opinion on racism. Each and every one of you is a racist, and you can take my word for it. If there’s anything the maple-sucking puck smackers to your north know, it’s that all Americans are too racist to elect the black man with no experience at all, who answers questions on foreign policy and the economy incorrectly, and who has questionable allegiance to the country.” I’d love to know what Rob was doing in Canada. Did he have one of those coveted outsourced jobs? Does he have dual citizenship and not have to worry about a health plan? Does he think he’s too good for this country? Stay in Canada, Rob. Take Obama with you. He is actually eligible for PM through his father.

Comment by Uppity Woman | 2008-06-16 07:43:07

They both lost too. Well, Kerry did. I THOUGHT Gore won but apparently NOT, since the party fought over his popular vote win. But obviously, he really DID lose, just like Hillary did. You can’t have an argument and then go with the other side of it when it suits you. For all the yelling my party did over that election, they were hypocrits, weren’t they now? Oh yeah that’s right, FLA and MICh didn’t “Count”….until Barky needed some of their delegates representing people who didn’t vote for him.

So Kerry and Gore lost. Hardly two good comparisons when we are in the middle of another election.

Comment by Uppity Woman | 2008-06-16 07:54:39

Losers, Losers, Losers. The Democratic party brings nothing but Losers to Presidential races. The assumption now is the same one as before. “We can put a cockroach up for election and win this year”. Well we certainly put a cockroach up this year.

Two presidents. 40 years. Make that 44, coming up. The guy that saved this party and yanked it out of the crapper is vilified. Dumb shits. Dumb shits who pander to a loud whackjob radical fringe. Same old story, different year. Don’t let the war make you confident. Obama’s friends and followers will scare the electorate more than the war does. Just ask McGovern about that. You want to act like radical assholes, the party pays the price.

Be secretive as a candidate, that always flies well too. And have a flag problem. Act like you are above everything. Don’t release your medical records. Scare people over how you feel about the safety of the electorate with regard to criminals. That works too. Ask Dukakis.

Act like you’re smarter than everybody else. That works too. Have a past with radical behaviors. That works too. Ask Kerry. Losers. Nothing but losers.

Losers, Losers, Losers.

Comment by Lou | 2008-06-16 12:11:50

LOL. That’s what he is. A cockroach. You just can’t seem to get rid of him. He feeds off of everything in his path and dirtied up the playing field. Cockroach says to Rendell “to hell with the people, give me the checks.” Rendell must have crapped his pants over that one and he wants to help the roach raise money?
If I were Rendell I’d go on vacation too.
(Hillarrrreeee!)Okay it’s time for a nationwide riot in DC. No waiting until August.

Dear Rob,

Did Gore or Kerry win? Is not the author addressing the question of electability?

Is it not possible for people to have good reasons for choosing a candidate other than Obama?

Further, why do you describe anyone, who would not choose Obama, to be a loon or racist? It must be nice to hide behind your computer while you are directing such deeply insulting names towards people who do not share your opinions. Why do you reward those who gave their lives for your liberty with this offensive abuse of the privilege?

Personally, I am not sold on his health care plan, his plan to cut funding for NASA, his having an adviser that wants to privatize Social Security, and his general misogyny along with the bullying tactics of his supporters. His race (which is ALSO white) is irrelevant to me.

Of course Arkansas didn’t vote for Gore in 2000 (he ran AWAY from the Clintons, and he didn’t win TN either).
Arkansas didn’t vote for Kerry in 2004 either, although many, many of us campaigned hard for him. Arkansas WOULD have voted for Wes Clark if he had been the nominee.
Arkansas gave Hillary the largest percentage of primary votes in any state or territory (70%).

I am an Arky, btw.

If the above sentence confuses you, please google “caucus” and “Obama”.

Comment by Northwest rain | 2008-06-16 05:45:14

Exactly!

The stupid Obamabots keep using “new” math to “prove” that their messiah will “win”.

But there will be NO caucuses in the GE.

So McCain will win — it’s going to be a cake walk for McCain — thanks to Howie Deanie, Pooposie, and Donna is a racist Brazile and the way they manipulated the whole primary season for their fella.

Obama will be unelectable probably by the end of September — IF he makes it to the convention in August. Rezko should start singing in August.

So if Obama does become unelectable in September — does the VP nominee then step up to be the Dem Prez nominee — and THEN another VP would have to be selected.

This reminds me of chickens running around with their heads cut off. At that point only idiots will claim to be democrats. There will be two main parties — Republican and Independent. Howie Dean and company will have killed the Democratic Party.

No Mississippi or Louisiana for Barry – there’s no way. I live in a large metropolitan area in Louisiana (over 300,000) and I will tell you … every “Joe Bob” in the woods is going to come out on election day and vote AGAINST the Radical One.
As a Democrat, I’m a needle in a haystack in La. The majority of Dems here are black. And the few white ones I do know are very conservative – more along the lines of the Reagan Dems. There is a listing for the GOP in the phone book, but not a trace of the Dems. The Dems here have very weak party support. Yea, we have 31% AA, but over 60% white and I live with and work with these people every day and I am TELLING YOU what I know to be the truth. Louisiana is NOT going to vote for a black man. Especially a radical one. He has NO CHANCE HERE. I would bet my house on it.

The main reason Southern whites went GOP years ago, according to all my Repug friends is they believe the Dems cater to AAs. (One exception, Bill Clinton in ‘92) I have yet to see a Dem sticker on a car in the past 20 years, other than mine – (they’re all Bush/Cheney) and huge Evangelical numbers here as well as an Air Force and Army base. Barry will have to count on the East and West, cause he will be singing “bye-bye Barack” in the South… only in his arrogant, latte-drinking, wind-surfing, Cape Cod dreams. He is total antipathy to the typical good ole’ boy, “Sportsman’s Paradise”, Hank Williams-loving, deer-hunting, beer-drinking, crawfish-boiling, tobacco-chewing, Southern mentality.

Regarding the post downthread – sorry just woke up: Why is it that every news organization has to assume that those of us who voted for Clinton and will not vote for Obama are racist? And when will the people who support him and the DNC wake up and realize that he is not a progressive. His economic team is all neocons. He is completely inexperienced and incompetent. He lied, cheated, and stole his way to the Democratic nomination (including disenfranchising Florida and Michigan). In other words, folks, he is George W. Bush with a D after his name.

Regarding Arkansas, if Gore had won Arkansas or Kerry had won Arkansas, Florida nor Ohio would have mattered. When you have a candidate who can easily win all three of those states, why would you throw them out for the candidate who can’t win any of them?

And lastly, as a woman, as a lesbian, and as an American, I will never vote for Obama. All these years I wondered, why would people vote against their own self interests. Now I understand. For me this year, it’s not about who will lie to me about what he will or will not do in regards to the Supreme Court. This year it’s about who has the experience after 8 years of total incompetence. It’s about who believes in country first, not self first. It’s about a whole lot more than the Supreme Court.

yeah Sandy S. I agree. Obviously Howie and company thought they could pull a fast one on us and we’d never even notice. What a disappointment to them – not only did we notice. Many changed parties, and most of us intend to vote for the war hero rather than the empty suit.

Notice the press publishes Hillary’s full name – Hillary Rodham Clinton – but only publishes Obama’s partial name.

Why doesn’t the press publish HUSSEIN?
When Obama’s full name is used, it’s considered to be written by anti-Obama or Republicans.

When has a presidential candidate’s full name been OMITTED – while his opponents are published?

Will HUSSEIN also be omitted from the history books?

My sense of the public’s attitude is that he played the race card too often in the primary. Nobody cares now.

In fact, after being called racists by news media and his surrogates and seeing the campaign talk about their states as though they were all uneducated hicks, they are probably secretly prepared to enjoy him getting a snootful of his own medicine.

Hey….if you’re going to refer to W. VA that way, then it’s OK to publish his wife’s gaffes and make that a big issue. Shoot, bring it all up. He earned this one.

Obama pretended that Hillary was the negative one. Actually, it was him. And people watched and knew.

There will be no sympathy vote now.

You have got to be kidding, right? Will they be allowed to vote at the convention, you ask, with the move afoot by Dean to remove Hillary’s name from the ballot to prevett such a thing. The Hero King has to look like a hero and if he is the only candidate, he will ascend unanmously. Dean/Pelosi/Brazille is taking no chances.

After all, they musta have plans all on the table if the move to Chicago is a done deal. How many months ago do you suppose they secured the location of the offices, negotiated leases, etc etc …

When do you suppose Hillary figured it all out … they were still playing the game when they didn’t realize how the MI and FL rules were shaping the outcome. Do you suppose it was then that they realized that they’d been hoodwinked and bamboozled and how they’d been played?

Comment by jmk | 2008-06-16 10:40:15

Do not think the move to Chitown was planned by the DNC at all. Looks more like it fell out this way:

Few weeks ago was a leak that a bo camp head was scheduled to take over the DNC. Then that announcement vanished and instead Dean was confirmed to remain as Chair;

Looks pretty clear there was internal rivalry. Dean demanded he retain his post- so bo said as ‘compromise’ OK but then you must move HQ to Chicago.

Understand, these people are very big on what they call ‘NEGOTIATIONS” and they are always one step ahead in their maneuvers. Now Dean probably thinks he ‘won’ something – but really they got just what they wanted – and planned WITHOUT DNC knowledge long ago.

And why the rush move? Because they want to save his ‘presumed Nominee status’ by having the DNC feel they are too invested to pull back.

Don’t know the polling basis for this map, but every 30 seconds the narrator states that McCain will get the Hispanic vote, despite the fact that last week Gallup polled the Hispanic vote at close to 3 to 1 for Obama.

Comment by Hope Floats | 2008-06-16 09:06:43

He uses the RCP average. There are not enough states with a significant Hispanic population that he could say that every 30 secs. He said Arizona would go to McCain. It is his home state. New Mexico looks like a toss-up, but Hispanic voters like McCain. They’ve never been aligned with a party before.

Comment by Hope | 2008-06-16 09:14:49

It’s all about the margins, sweetie.
And the electoral votes are collected state by state. Polling any demographic as a whole is not necessarily representative.

The purpose of the troll is to disrupt communication. They respond to posts with insults, smears or demands in order to muddy the waters of our communication. Do they hope to convert anyone to their point of view? No. Do they really wish for debate? No. They are akin to resistance fighters, their sole function is to create chaos, not to win the war. I will not reply to them, and encourage all to do likewise, otherwise you are letting them succeed in their sole purpose. You’ll see them here in mostly pairs, working shifts as regular as a assembly line. Just ignore them. It does work.

Did you folks notice the MILE-WIDE double standard on how the press treats Obama vs how they treated Hillary and Bush?

For instance. when Hillary mentioned RFK running through June to remind people that June campaign isn’t extrordinary… and when Bush mentioned Appeasement in his speech in Israel.

In both cases no one even Obama, yet the Press automatically made connections from Hillary and bush to Obama as if each was talking about him.. and then we had to hear about obsessivesly for days.

Now just the other day Obama makes his “Bring a gun” comment. Where is the media?

Where is Keith Olberman and his breathless “MY GOD.. THIS IS AN ELECTION.. YOU CAN’T EVEN MENTION WORDS THAT RHYME WITH GUN! HOW DARE YOU… HOW D A R E YOU”

And then every day there’s an example where Obama turns into Elmer Fudd.. and yet nothing.

it’s so obvious … I bet the ratings for all the over-the-top-with-bias channels will see their ratings plummet.

Comment by grtphoto | 2008-06-16 09:33:18

I love Arkansas! I lived there for a time – it is a great state! If you haven’t been to Little Rock lately and you’re wondering what it is like – probably the best description is “Austin, TX. – 20 years ago” – meaning it has cool restaurants, art galleries, theaters, a farmers’ market on the waterfront, an impressive teaching hospital, and a revitalized downtown area and no one really knows about it yet!

If you haven’t gone – check it out – it is worth te trip (and with gas prices being what they are – might as well stay in the states this summer!) and of course, make sure to visit Clinton’s Presidential Library!!

Comment by Democrat | 2008-06-16 07:50:00

Yep, and Clinton would have had problems with states that Obama’s doing well with.

Meanwhile, women voters are strongly supporting Obama now, as are Hispanics and working class voters. See NBC/WSJ poll, with the women vote discussed here:

An NBC/Wall Street Journal poll found a wide gap last week: Women favored Obama over McCain, 52% to 33%. The survey also found that voters who cast ballots for Clinton in the Democratic primaries preferred Obama over McCain, 61% to 19%.

And a discussion of the Hispanic vote here:

A new Gallup Poll summary of surveys taken in May shows Obama winning 62% of Latino registered voters nationwide, compared with just 29% for McCain. Others have found a wide gap as well. The pro-Democratic group Democracy Corps compiled surveys from March through May that showed Obama with a 19-point lead among Latinos. And a Times poll published last month showed Obama leading McCain among California Latinos by 14 points.

Comment by Perry Logan | 2008-06-16 08:19:25

I prefer the straw poll that shows McCain creaming the Bamanator 61% to 39%. And this before the first indictments.

Comment by typical irishman | 2008-06-16 08:41:37

NBC is no more than a comic sitcom these days. Gallup? naah, take a few give a few. Where is SurveyUSA? Clinton has already proved both NBC and Gallup to be untrustworthy. Latinos don’t have much use for wusses like BO , but they really go for the war hero types. Clinton is really their first choice but, Howard Dean has screwed them just like he has everyone else. Obama will soon just be another bad history era for the failing–AND–flailing democratic party.

Comment by Hope | 2008-06-16 09:21:42

Obama losing even 20% of female dems IS huge.

And, Latino voters in a poll in MAY? Did you notice what they thought of him in JUNE in PR?
Latinos are traditionally Dem voters, if McCain cuts those margins in yet, another demographic in crucial states, that will be the math and the map that matters.

And again, the electoral votes are not allotted nationally, but one state at a time.

Comment by Lou | 2008-06-16 12:46:17

Clinton would have had problems with states that Obama’s doing well with.

Like Wyoming and Nebraska.

20% here 30% there, a few million here a million there, pretty soon it adds up to a lost election.

Comment by typical irishman | 2008-06-16 08:52:03

20% here 30% there is exactly what BO will get in those states –IF– he is lucky. And remember , he can’t bus the school kids in for the general election. Obama won in states that will not even give him the time of day in the general. Obama has won an empty ballot box in those states that only see red when you mention DEMOCRAT :)

Comment by Hope | 2008-06-16 09:25:05

Typical,

You are so right. Why on Earth is there an Obama talking point in which they assume he will make solid red states blue? What is this based on, really?
There are no caucuses or biased allocation of delegates. It’s winner take all, counting ALL the votes in a state. There is no comparable evidence to suggest he could repeat the scenarios as he did in those states in the Primary.

Comment by Danny | 2008-06-17 23:29:30

I think the idea that Obama will turn red states blue is based on polling. For example, in Virginia, Rasmussen and SurveyUSA both have Obama leading. In Colorado, the two most recent polls (both Rasmussen) have him up. SurveyUSA even had him up one point in their last poll out of Indiana (which was back in April).

Clearly, polling this far out from the election is pretty suspect, but I think that’s where idea comes from.

Comment by typical irishman | 2008-06-16 08:29:12

Clinton has won the states that will count in the general election. Obama has won the states that will vote republican in the general. Clinton’s votes are far more important to winning the general than Obama’s votes. Clinton did not need Obama’s votes but Obama is guarnteed to be a loser without the Hillary votes. Obama is a loser, Howard Dean is a loser (again), J. Kerry is a loser (again), Ted Kennedy is a loser (again), T. Daschle is a loser (again), ETC. ETC. ETC. Most of Obama’ support is based on losers and that too is the history of the democratic party in a nutshell, the “Loser Party”, and Obama is not changing a damn thing. I am sure glad there was another boat nearby called the Indepedent because the Democrat is sinking fast. HOWDY McCain , thanks for the life-line :)

Why is it I can’t post when I mention Dean’s reply about the first ballot at the convention???

Comment by sowsear | 2008-06-16 08:36:39

What I tried to post previously said that Dean stated in an e-mail that “Anyone in nomination would be on the first ballot”.(or words to that effect). The key words are in nomination . Hill’s delegates are being replaced already; who will be left to put her name in nomination and/or who will be left to vote for her?
I also said it was too late to try to pass a media bill. The MSM is already owned by large corporations and billionaires who have made BO what he is today. The far left and the far right may have conspired to place him in the White House. Our only hope is that the Republicans will support McCain in the end.

Comment by Uppity Woman | 2008-06-16 08:45:31

Dean can play this game all he wants. The results in November will remind him of the last time they gave us a candidate that didn’t suit the moderate majority of the party. Lesson learned. Again. Next year at this time, Dean will be doing something else for a living. All I can say is, thank GOD this nutball dictator didn’t become President of the United States. He would have been no better than george bush.

You guys keep harping on Barack Obama’s qualifications, but there are only two qualifications a person must meet, and Barack meets them both. Michelle Obama has said being the president is not rocket science. And since they are both extremely intelligent with ivy league educations, I am sure Barack, with support from Michelle is more than qualified for the job. Abraham Lincoln by your standards would be unqualified to be president.

Comment by typical irishman | 2008-06-16 09:04:34

I suppose the Obama’s learned and earned what qualifies him/her by sitting in the rev Wright’s anti american church for 20 years. What would Lincoln think of the rev Wright rants? I don’t believe Lincoln was the “GOD DAMN AMERICA” type president. I don’t believe Lincoln was the type that would spend most of his life in relationships with the likes of terrorists like Ayers and Dorhn and radical Muslims and leaders like Lewis Farrakhan.

Comment by Hope | 2008-06-16 09:37:29

Another of Michelle’s condescending, angry remarks, huh?

She obviously has no respect for the Office of the Presidency. She trashes not only the job itself, but those who have served it in the past, those FROM HER OWN PARTY NO LESS.

How hypocritical is it to insult the very job she wants for her husband?

If the Obama’s fit anyone’s idea of intelligent, this nation is in a sorry state indeed. Neither of them use correct grammar, they heavily market the use of slang, and neither of them has the common sense to avoid insulting the very people they seek to represent.

Comment by mahaska | 2008-06-16 10:34:45

“And since they are both extremely intelligent with ivy league educations, I am sure Barack, with support from Michelle is more than qualified for the job.”

I’d advise any Barky-O supporters to stay well clear of the notion of Michelle in the White House.

Look, let me be clear. Raw intelligence is worth very little unless it’s channeled properly. Nor do Barky-O’s educational credentials impress me; he got into those schools via affirmative action programs. And please don’t start on the Law Review topic or his grades at Harvard unless you can demonstrate a little knowledge about grade inflation. KTHXBYE.

Comment by JozefAL | 2008-06-16 11:43:05

Yeah, remember the last time that a potential First Lady was thought to be running as a Co-President?
Boy, did the right-wing and the Republican Party have a fun time with that.
I think the candidate’s name was Clinton.
Yeah, I can just imagine Michelle staying behind the scenes, only coming out to promote some “safe” social issue–as with Laura’s literacy campaign. If the anti-Hillary people were so scared of “Billary”, maybe they should think about what a Marack co-presidency will be like.

Actually, it could be rocket science. That is one of the issues with them. They have no clue as to how difficult it can be to do it right.

Sure, anyone can do it badly, look at the Repubs. But, doing it right, where all the people benefit, or at least most of them, is another story entirely.

Comment by Hope Floats | 2008-06-16 18:26:04

Michelle Obama has said being the president is not rocket science.

Did you read her thesis? Like she knows anything about rocket science. Now I know why Obama would cut funding for NASA, though. Rocket science thrown under the bus.

If Obama already ceded Ohio and Florida..there is going to be problems. Ted Strickland said that Obama can either run a Strickland campaign and win or a Kerry campaign and loose. It appears that Obama doesn’t want to run if it requires hard work on his part.

I have no doubt that Obama will carry the most blue of states. However, that doesn’t guarantee the election.

If Obama is indeed conceding the “swing” states, then those red states are not going to turn either. This is the Obama delusion.

What the Clinton’s know and “political science” major don’t know, is analyzing the voting margins in the primaries. Obama did get more delegates because of caucuses and inner city urban voters. These areas are disproportional in delegate allocation. The margins in the less primary delegate rich areas were overwhelmingly Clinton. This effort ends up being a better general election strategy.

If Obama is ceding electoral college rich swing states despite his “boots” on the ground..we will see what happens.

Heads up… Has someone seen an Ad on FOX local station running in NH..? I saw an Ad this past Thursday night around 11pm… It showes the pitcure of McCain and then imposses a picture of George Bush on McCain. Then the words “SAME” follows. The Ad then says approved by Obama/or Hillary for President. Is that a joke or is the Obama camp serious?

Comment by Hope | 2008-06-16 09:06:01

The media coverage is beyond the point of ridiculousness. It goes on and on and on. All Obama, all the time. Let’s hope some undecided voters reach the point of over-saturation.

As the Hillary dems mobilize, the foremost action should be to find ways to communicate Obama info to those voters who may only have the media’s biased info as their source.

In addition, those of us who are aware of the faulty coverage should avoid giving any ratings to any network unless we know there will be coverage favorable to our cause.

Comment by jjran | 2008-06-16 09:45:32

Amen to that!

And the working poor will benefit under a McCain presidency?

Comment by Ivory Bill Woodpecker | 2008-06-16 11:21:41

Obama surrounds his unqualified ass with Friedmanite economic advisers and has repeated right-wing talking points about “privatizing”–that is, looting–Social Security. Economically, there would be no significant difference between your Plastic Jesus and a Republican.

Comment by wac for hillary | 2008-06-16 11:43:22

Yeah, the poor did so well with Obama as their state legislator. He bought a mansion for them to look at from their tenements. What a guy!

The Dems have enough trouble with the South as it is. Obama will assure the GOP’s taking WV, KY, and FL as well.

Comment by AnninCa | 2008-06-16 09:50:13

Arkansas was never going to Obama. Hillary or Republican. For sure.

What is interesting is that Obama is acting confident about Virginia. Take a look today, though. McCain is ahead. :)

Comment by wac for hillary | 2008-06-16 11:47:05

I don’t think Arkansans will forgive Obama’s crew calling the Clintons racists. Hillary beat the crap out of him in the primary here, and I think McCain will do the same.

I never really believed that Obama could take Virginia–too much military there. Even with Clark drinking the Obama kool-aid, I don’t think most military types will go for him.

Comment by BarneyG2000 | 2008-06-16 09:51:18

. prefer to lose, which is why they support Barack Obama.

I guess you haven’t been paying attention:

Clinton supporters like Authenreith are siding heavily with Obama over McCain, polls show. And Obama has taken a wide lead among female voters, belying months of political chatter and polls of primary voters suggesting that disappointment over Clinton’s defeat might block the Illinois senator from enjoying his party’s historic edge among women.

Comment by rjj | 2008-06-16 09:54:42

Then you needn’t worry, eh?

ol’ freedom fighter,

you didn’t mention what the two qualifications to be President were … would be interested.

obviously it doesn’t take a rocket scientist … we have one of those now

let’s see …

resume (nope)
experience (nope)
achievement (nope)

well, he did achieve – he became a mouthpiece for a small power elite of the Democratic Party … so I guess that is one.

And he adopted the play-by-play outlined and used exclusively by Atwater thru Rove rules of politics. Nothing new to see here … it just never appeared in the Democratic Party before. Honor, dignity and integrity used to count for something and many democrats have become nothing better than sheeple.

Fear! Fear! all the time.
Guard your uterus and your lattes! The hell with principle and values.

Comment by Ivory Bill Woodpecker | 2008-06-16 11:23:37

“Uterus?” The GOP will never overturn Roe v. Wade because they milk the anti-abortionist suckers for big fat horse-choking wads of campaign money.

The day they actually end RvW is the day that cash cow runs dry.

You DON’T cook a goose that lays golden eggs. ;)

I’ve seen ACORN registering black voters in the local grocery stores here in New Orleans. I don’t think however, there are enough black voters in Louisiana plus latte liberals and university students to win this state for Obama. I’ve seen people put it in the mildly red column, but as far as I can tell it’s going more solid red all the time. Hurricane Katrina displaced many of the AA voters and brought in a lot of folks from texas, especially Latinos. I don’t think the new demographics will work for Obambi any where but in New Orleans. The rest of the state is basically old south Since he doesn’t do well with Catholics, can’t see him pulling the Cajun area or the working class whites in New Orleans. I’d be shocked if he got above 40% frankly. Also AA vote down here depends heavily on a the heavy handed GOTV. You basically have to provide transportation and more. If it rains, no one goes any where. I thought that sounded a bit weird when I first move down here from Minneapolis, but 13 years of experience later I’ve seen it in action.

Comment by AnninCa | 2008-06-16 10:47:16

He may get some AA Republican votes. But I agree…not enough to carry the state.

Comment by OkieAtty | 2008-06-16 12:16:24

I’m willing to bet $100 right now that:

1. Bo will not carry Arkansas (6 EV).
2. BO will not carry Oklahoma (7 EV).
3. BO will not carry Texas (34 EV).
4. BO will not carry Louisiana (9 EV).
5. BO will not carry Missouri (11 EV).
6. BO will not carry Kansas (6 EV).
7. BO will not carry Colorado (9 EV).

If he is the nominee, he will lose all seven of those states. That’s 81 of 270 votes needed. That’s almost fully 1/3 of the magic number. Throw in FL at 27 and OH at 20 and McCain has 47% of what he needs without ever going West.

Comment by OkieAtty | 2008-06-16 12:16:51

Or South….

Comment by Lou | 2008-06-16 13:02:49

And massachusetts too. With Deval Patrick leaving a bad taste in their mouth they may go RED. It’s one of the few states that had no cheating in the primary. And you can’t tell New Englander how to vote.

Comment by Mr.Murder | 2008-06-16 13:04:39

We’re 85% black so the Obama vote will go in this town, the county margins are opposite that, he could end up winning the two largest towns in the county and losing everywhere else.

This is where he’s hoping to get the most support outside of Little Rock or West Memphis.
One gets the feeling his nukular campaign tactics will force many down ticket to distance their political stand from him.

Imagine that, Southern Democrats winning because they campaign as the ‘not Obama’ choice…

Just another alienated female here who will note vote Obama for the obvious reasons. The DNC made a galactic mistake and I want no part of them until and if they get it together. At least most Arkansas citizens won’t experience the voter remorse Missouri has — look forward to the day Clair gets the boot.

Too bad Obama wasn’t able to carry any red states (besides Colorado, Florida, Indiana, Iowa, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, and Virginia).
