An Open Letter to Vice President Gore

When so many of us begged you to run for office again this year, you jokingly stated you were a ‘recovering politician.’ Certainly, you have more than earned the right to walk away from what you consider to be a toxic environment. However, much as I appreciate your desire to remain neutral in this nominating contest, as you have sent me a fund raising letter on behalf of the DSCC, I feel I must now question your deafening silence in this most critical of primaries.
You of all people understand what it is like to be the far more qualified candidate and be on the receiving end of ridicule by the drive-by hit squad media. You have rightly stated that television is a one-way medium, not encouraging discourse, critical thought or active participation. This year, we see even more clearly the influence and effect that favoritism of one and vilification and misogyny toward another has on the voting populace, as junk food is fed to a citizenry struggling to make ends meet, at points overwhelmed by their own responsibilities, without time to dig deeper for the truth of the story.
It is both amazing and unconscionable to me that some educated people, possessing a master’s degree no less, actually believe that Senator Obama ‘voted’ against the war. They are clueless to the fact he was not even a U.S. Senator at that time.
Yet, with all of the advantages he had going into this year: the DNC clearly gaming Michigan and Florida in his favor, the media offering pillow fluffing soft stories about him, rather than vetting him, while exaggerating Senator Clinton’s every step to negative effect, he still was not able to close the deal until the Super Delegates raced to forcibly shut down this process.
Senator Clinton won all the large states, save Illinois. She won all the swing states and has the popular vote and electoral map victory in her pocket. She leads in all the crucial demographics we need to win this election in November. Even by Republican standards of winner takes all delegates per the state’s popular vote, she would be our nominee.
The majority of Senator Obama’s pledged delegates were earned back in February, before we knew anything of Wright and Pfleger, Auchi, Ayers, Rezko, Bitter Gate, NAFTA Gate, even Sweetie Gate. Since then, despite the DNC elite riding shotgun for him in every conceivable way, the mainstream media shouting from the rooftops for months that “this contest is over” and his outspending her 4 to 1, Hillary Clinton still managed to finish better than the presumptuous nominee.
What is the explanation, then, for the absolute mugging that took place at the Rules and Credentials Committee Meeting on May 31st? A candidate not only gets delegates apportioned to him when his name was not even on the ballot, but is awarded extra delegates belonging to the other candidate based on faulty exit polling information. Senator Obama is also not penalized any delegates in Florida for breaking his pledge not to advertise there, running $1.3 million worth of ads. An accident, he said. Guess there’s no favoritism there.
It seems the DNC has unanimously adopted the media’s talking points that whatever this newbie Senator from Illinois does is above reproach while every negative tactic in the world is attributed to Hillary Clinton. Please, let’s not pay any attention to the fact that his campaign employed the tactics of race baiting, divisiveness, trashing her record and misrepresenting her policies. He also loudly trashed one of the best administrations we have ever had ˆ and by extension, he also very unfairly trashed you, Mr. Vice President. You were a great part of all of the wonderful achievements of the Clinton years. This was a team effort. Senator Obama kicked your winning team to the curb. He did this without anyone questioning him. Not the media. Not the cowardly and biased Democratic Party leadership.
How can it be that Hillary Clinton, the candidate with the bold, progressive policies and clearly the most qualified of the bunch has also been unceremoniously kicked to the curb? Where are our ethics? Where is our common sense? Where is our love for the working people in this country who would most benefit from the amazing skill set, expertise and compassion she brings to the table?
The Democratic minority in the Florida legislature consented to move up their primaries to obtain a paper voting record. How can you, of all people, not defend their rights to fair reflection and to count every vote and every delegate after you and every citizen in this country suffered through the election of 2000. Imagine if you or any one member of the Senate stood up at that time for the Black Caucus, so that we could have had full recount in Florida. In my estimation, you would have taken your rightful place as the President of this great country and we would have had another eight years of peace and prosperity. Certainly you would never have chosen Bush’s reckless road to ruin.
Whatever mistakes were made about not choosing to have Bill Clinton campaign for you or running on your wonderful record together, well, that is a decision that was yours to make and I have to respect that. While I neither discount nor pretend to understand the ill feelings engendered by, or the motives behind, the depth and breadth of the DNC’s apparent Clinton Derangement Syndrome, I still find the animosity confusing particularly in light of the debacle of the Bush/Cheney years and how these two have so defamed our country and our Constitution without receiving so much as a slap on the wrist.
Surely the Clintons have earned the right to better treatment at the hands of their own party. Surely Hillary Clinton who has worked tirelessly her entire life on behalf of children, women’s rights, veterans, first responders, education and health care, deserves better than the treatment she has received, and should not be forever punished for any personal transgression of her husband. I think she has been punished enough. Wouldn’t you agree?
Now that the principles of fair reflection and democracy have been tossed aside by the DNC, I can no longer be a member of this party and my husband and I have now registered as Independents. We are people of good conscience. We put country before party and as such, can never vote for this dissembling and divisive nominee. We can ill afford another arrogant, inexperienced trainee in the White House. Surely, whatever step you are on in your recovery, you might have taken a moment to stand up against this outrage.
The Presidency is bigger than any one person. It is not about sex, race, or age. We face some of the most serious challenges in our lifetime and cheap talk is not going to get the job done. With the unique perspective you possess, I would have thought you, of all people, would not allow another travesty of wrong, weak or questionable leadership to be foisted upon the American people.
Gore has no stomach for battle. I thought so before, but this proves it.
We all owe a great deal to Al Gore, but politics is not his calling!

But seeing that media easily depicts him as crazy when it suits them, … little may have come out of it.
I believe Obama pressured Gore; that’s why Gore came out now. (If Gore truly believed Obama was best for the country, he’d have come out months ago in Obama’s favor.)
I think Gore wants that environmental cabinet level post — or at least that it be made (if he doesn’t hold it, the fact that it’ll be a cabinet-level position means Gore’s life work meant something — maybe Gore needs that positive affirmation?) — and that’s the leverage Obama has over him.
I know Gore doesn’t care for Hillary Clinton personally at all. However, his wife was friendly toward Mrs. Clinton while Mrs. Clinton was First Lady and Tipper Gore (Al’s wife) also did her level best to help Mrs. Clinton get through that awful mess. She didn’t have to do that, but did it as a woman of good conscience. (God bless her.)
At any rate, I will not vote for Obama and I have done the same thing as Ani did; I walked away from the Democratic Party for the same reasons (they’ve abandoned “fair reflection” and any pretense at democracy in favor of throwing an election in favor of a weak, ineffective, inexperienced candidate for whatever reasons) and am now an Independent.
While I will always respect Al Gore, he is not the keeper of my conscience — or of my vote.

OK so Al Gore has a magic wand he’s supposed to wave and make it all better. He is not in control of the DNC, the rule committee, or anything else. He is being a party loyalist like Hillary. gore is not the knight in white amour who is going to save us from the black knight(yes pun intended). Like it or not (and I don’t) Obama is the presumptive nominee and everyone is going to get behind him for now.
For me, it’s not so much that he endorsed Obama, but that he endorsed him BEFORE the convention! If he had wanted to fall in line and play the good and loyal Democrat, he should have waited until after the convention when Obama was the OFFICIAL nominee. Doing it before hand reeks of pandering and self-interest, not to mention being a slap in the face to Bill Clinton, the guy who chose him for VP.
The issue is not about being a party loyalist, which I believe is ridiculous because there are people in all parties who couldn’t lead a fish to water, but it is about him being silent when he saw exactly what he had experienced while running for President. Why vote party and not vote for the person and issues that reflect what each voter believes is best for himself/herself, friends, loved ones, this country, and this world???

I don’t think it’s reasonable to expect Gore to do anything different. The party is going to line up behind him for Prez minus some earth-shattering event.
There’s a lot of hot air about whitey tapes, falsified birth certificates, whatever. I don’t like Michelle Obama and I don’t doubt she made such statements. I just doubt that anyone has such a tape and hasn’t used it yet.
In any case, I expect that the vast majority of the 18 million Hillary supporters will go to Obama, again barring some earth-shattering event.
I won’t vote for Obama simply because I think Mccain would make a better president, period. I imagine that a lot of would-be Dem voters will do the same. The hardcore party elite like Gore? They’ll always follow the party.
And I believe that the vast majority of the 18 million voters will tell Obama to take a flying leap. What this shows is that the Democratic Party is no different than the Republican Party leadership-wise. Both are willing to sacrifice the country for the sake of the party. Somebody needs to tell them they have their priorities reversed; it may just be the 18 million who remind the DNC of this.
Even a small proportion of those 18 million would-be Dem voters could be enough to turn the election.
If Obama scrapes by with one more vote than McCain, the Dem Party will consider everything hunky-dorey.
Seeing as how Al Gore is supposed to be all about the environment how could he possibly endorse the pinhead that thinks nuclear energy is just fine and dandy? Could it be that for all the talk, Al Gore is just another damn politician that puts party before country? Sure looks like it. Guess he doesn’t care much about Democrats disenfranchising voters in 2 states quite as much as he did about Republicans doing it in one.

If you stick to blogs like this one, then it probably does seem like the “vast majority” of the 18 million will tell Obama to take a flying leap. But if you look at the larger picture, it’s not happening.
If political science shows us anything about Americans, it’s that we are quick to anger but very slow to change our voting patterns. I’m always on the look out for a revolution, but I’m not longer surprised when the status quo wins yet again.

I must concur with researchguy66. I was working as a contractor for a government agency in the early ’90s and the one person we had working on web pages was paid out of the Vice President’s office. I always wondered about that and thought that it was strange. And so, when I hear people making fun of Gore about inventing the internet, I always correct them.
But, maybe Gore feels bitter, and endorsing Obama is a great outlet for that. I tend to read the entire reaction by the DNC (or is it the ONC now?) as one great bitterfest against the Clintons. I read it as jealousy. But, don’t people want their lives to improve? Hillary’s fight for the White House has been about improving our lives. All you have to do is take a look at the thousands of complaints regarding the caucuses…bus loads of ineligible voters who locked Clinton supporters out, rough-house tactics, the list goes on.

When VP Gore first ran for the US Senate from Tennessee, I attended one of his campaign stops in a town so small it had one traffic light. The weren’t 25 people in that room, and I took notes for his campaign. He was very impressive and remained so to me throughout his campaign. I voted for him every change I had.

Firstly, ALL of those issues are trumped by the fact that an unqualified male was promoted over an extremely qualified female (we are just ending an experience with an unqualified male in the Presidency, we don’t need another). This sets back woman’s issues in the workplace 50 years. When the democratic party promotes unqualified men over extremely qualified women, how can they say they will promote the rights of any minority?
Secondly, McCain IS CLOSER to Hillary on ALL of those issues than is Obama.
1) On Roe v Wade, The Ultra Conservative W. Bush was not able get a majority on the Supreme court that would overturn Roe. McCain is a Moderate who has a track record of opposing his own party and working with Democrats, and will work with them for a fair minded Justice. That is why McCain was John Kerry’s first choice for a running mate in 2004. The conservative justices Roberts, Scalia, Alito, Thomas, and Kennedy are all on record as committed to stare decisis, which precludes overturning previously decided law such as Roe.
2) Obama and the DNC has demonstrated that they are not for equal rights for Women, how can they be for equal rights for gays? Obamas church of 20 years supports the nation of Islam and Louis Farrakhan, which concludes that gays are a product of the Devil. Obama has members of the Nation of Islam on his staff. McCain while opposed to Gay marriage, is for Gay civil Unions, which will give Gays court recognized rights similar to marriage. It is a step in the right direction, that a majority of the US will get behind. The majority of the US will not get behind Gay Marriage, and is a position and issue that will cost the Democrats the election as proven in 2004.
3) McCain IS FOR energy independence, and he can articulate it profoundly better than Obama. McCain has enumerated the strategic and domestic reasons on why the US needs to be energy independent. McCain was the first of a growing number of Republicans and Conservatives who recognize the dangers of global warming. McCain has a plan with tax incentives to develop alternative sources of energy, Wind, Solar, Hydrogen, Ethanol, and to reduce and conserve US energy consumption.
4) Obama himself throughout the campaign shouted that Hillary was closer to McCain on Iraq. And, Obama is all over the map regarding Iraq. He has flip flopped more than the pancakes at a church fundraiser. In 2002 he gave a speech that opposed going to war, in 2004 he said if he had been in the Senate during the vote authorizing the use of force, he probably would have voted for it, in 2006 he said he was never against pulling out the troops and said he was never for a timetable to remove the troops.
Obama is the polar opposite.

Actually there are a lot of people in Michigan who have lost their jobs as a result of policies championed by Gore and the like …and Gore’s taking the automaker’s to task may not actually sit well with those who’ve lost jobs.

First of all WOW! what a great piece. I too stood dumbfounded while Gore put his support behind Obama. It seems contrary to anything just. It doesn’t even make sense. Considering what Gore wrote in his last book, it would seem that the only logical person for him to back was Hillary. After all, it was the television that Gore rightly condemned that made Obama the rock star candidate. Instead, it was Hillary that reached out to Americans everywhere with townhall meetings, conversations and the call for more debates. All the while Obama was having his teleprompted speeches and love fests on network and cable news. Or at least what passes for news.
I am more than a little disappointed with Gore’s endorsement and had planned to write about that. In fact I still might. But I will never be able to say what you said and how you said it with anywhere the grace and eloquence as you.

Good essay. When the DNC uses endorsers to solicit donations, it is important to let them know why you disagree with their endorsement.
I do no think it a good idea to judge Al Gore’s accomplishments as a Democrat by his poor judgment on the Obama campaign question, like some people are doing. Gore was an important piece of the pie that made the Clinton presidency quite a good and successful time for America. Gore was a hands-on, hard working, public servant as the VP. For example, he did yeoman work reorganizing the civil service in a manner that improved performance while respecting civil servants. It is important to not get sucked into the vortex of lies that the Republicans used to undermine Gore. Otherwise, we are using the same scorched earth tactics used by the Obama campaign to falsely re-vision the Clinton presidency as bad times.

While Al’s final action to succumb to “party unity”, to offer support to B O, made me sad, it wasn’t a total surprise. Al seems to always put “party” first. And he will always be a Democrat. He waited the latest to offer his support, besides the last one, Bill-himself, and didn’t endorse when there were candidates to choose from in a Primary. Although the Convention hasn’t taken place yet and could have waited until then, the party leadership made clear they wanted to “unify” now before the Convention and Al complied to party wishes.
Yet another point that makes me sad, because in this action, Al contradicts his own position. When he claimed that Global Warming and solving it, is the most important to him. And that Global Warming and the Environment does have a political party. That Al wanted to see what ALL candidates have to offer, because that is most important……………ONLY KIDDING-I guess.
And MAN, HIllary’s policy on the environment was excellent. She was striving for higher CAFE standards to 55 mpg, not B O, he had a goal of like 42, but now he has REMOVED that from his site with only generalized terminology.

Obama was the one pushing Nuclear energy. Not Hillary and…..Obama was the one pushing Liquid Coal, for the 2ND time, bringing it back in Jan 2007 when he started his Presidential campaign, until it ground to a halt in June. Ignoring the pleas from the environmentalists including Robert F Kennedy Jr at the NRDC and Al Gore himself, when they stated this would add so much more pollution to our environment, it would be like replacing every car with a HUMMER.

Al Gore is a puke. He, Richardson et al should have endorsed Hillary long ago. Instead they wanted to punish the Clintons and in so doing punished all democrats and America. Denying democrats and America a truly gifted and able candidate to become our next president. Voting for a third party candidate is dangerous because McCain needs all the votes he can get in order to stop Obama. Al Gore didn’t take sides during this election because he didn’t want to lose the youth enthusiasm and the ego-building he’d built up during the past year for his global warming cause. What’s that saying about real heroism?? —It means speaking up in a circumstance and calling something “wrong” when you risk losing everything you have. (See “To Kill a Mockingbird”) Al Gore waited to endorse Obama when everything was “safe”. In this election cycle, I’ve seen very few Democratic politicians go out on a limb and call out what was wrong. Most of them put their heads in the sand and are not honorable in my book. I’m one of your longtime supporters, Al. I voted for you in my state’s caucus (Maine) when you first ran for president. I supported you right from the beginning in the 2000 election. I’m sorry to disappoint you now, but I think the Democratic Party, to quote a fellow Mainer, lost its moral compass this primary season.
The DNC stupidly threw out millions of their own voters; in other words millions of babies out with the bathwater. My mother is a lifelong Democrat who lives in Florida. She’s not half a person. To punish Dems for what the Republican legislature did is absurd. Now the DNC says they’ll give Florida delegates half votes. THE DAMAGE HAD ALREADY BEEN DONE, AND THE DNC KNOWS IT. The remedy was way too little; way too late. I’m totally disgusted with the Democratic Party. How dare they give all the Uncommitted votes in Michigan to someone who, of his own volition, took his name off the ballot. Those Uncommitted voters should be represented at the convention by Uncommitted delegates. He did not earn those votes. The DNC made itself into a big Enabler for Sen. Obama. This is entitlement run amok.
One final note: the Democratic Party has taken its women voters for granted far too long. NO MORE. You guys can iron your own shirts. Good luck in the general election.

Howard Dean Schemes To Shut Down Democratic Convention–June 12, 2008 (LPAC)–Billionaire George Soros is paying DNC Dean to shut the 18 million loyal Democratic and independent voters who supported Hillary Clinton out of the Denver convention altogether. Obama campaign is pushing to actually unseat all the Clinton delegates and replace them with Obama loyalists, there are more recent reports that Howard Dean is trying to prevent any balloting for the Democratic nominee, and instead is trying to just ram through a voice vote for Obama, without a state-by-state roll call. Even after the two parties turned their nominating conventions into ersatz rock concerts, it was always the case that the losing candidates were all given the opportunity to speak from the podium, and a full vote taken, before the anointed candidate was confirmed. Usually, in a gesture of party unity, after the first ballot vote was taken, a motion would be presented to endorse the candidate by unanimous consent. These traditions actually did have the effect of unifying the party, often after a tight and hotly contested primary season, and at least conveyed the idea that the party came out of the convention unified behind the Presidential and VP nominees, going into the November general elections. Clearly, between the Obama campaign and Howard Dean, there is a great deal of worry that the vicious campaign that was run against Hillary Clinton has created a level of fury, which could explode at the convention. Between Soros, Dean, Nancy Pelosi, Reid, and, Obama campaign, there has been so much bad blood generated, that they have turned Hillary supporters into fanatics. According to one well-placed Washington source, if 20% of Hillary Clinton voters were to sit out the November Presidential vote, that would amount to a loss of 4 million potential Obama voters–if, indeed, Obama wound up with the nomination in the first place. That could spell certain doom for Obama’s already-doomed candidancy.

Soros Bankrolling MoveOn in Last Gasp Move To Steal the Nomination for Obama

June 3, 2008 (LPAC)–Millions of dollars are being conduited through a George Soros front organization, in a desperate effort to buy up superdelegates for Senator Barack Obama, according to well-placed Washington sources. “They suddenly have a nearly bottomless pool of cash,” one Washington insider reported.
MoveOn was launched in September 1998, at the peak of the drive to impeach President Bill Clinton, ostensibly to counter the impeachment drive with a more “modest” demand for Clinton’s censure by the U.S. Congress. This occurred at exactly the moment that President Clinton was promoting the need for a “new global financial architecture,” and at the same time that the LaRouche movement was leading the Committee to Save the Presidency, by going hard after the Mellon Scaife and neocon network behind the impeachment drive. Whereas the Committee to Save the Presidency assailed then-Vice President Al Gore for his collusion with Joseph Lieberman, in attempting to force Clinton to resign, MoveOn has been a big booster of Gore for years. Gore and Howard Dean both promoted MoveOn after the U.S. invasion of Iraq.
By Autumn 2003 at the latest, MoveOn had been gobbled up by George Soros, and his inner sanctum of billionaires, like Cleveland insurance magnate Peter Lewis, and Phoenix University founder and CEO John Sperling, both of whom had colluded with Soros throughout the 1990s to promote drug legalization, via the Drug Policy Foundation. At the initial meeting in Autumn 2003, between Soros and the co-founders of MoveOn, San Francisco IT execs Joan Blades and Wes Boyd, Soros, his son Jonathan Soros, Peter Lewis, and Peter Bing kicked in over $6 million. By various news accounts, based on FEC and IRS filings, by 2006, MoveOn had received more than $30 million from Soros and Lewis.
“Grassroots” organization MoveOn has other billionaires among its benefactors, including two members of the Rockefeller family, who have been funding the group since 1999. Laurence Rockefeller and Wendy Rockefeller, both big boosters of the League of Conservation Voters and other radical Malthusian environmental outfits, have given undisclosed amounts of money to MoveOn. The Pritzker family of Chicago (Penny Pritzker is treasurer of the Obama for President Campaign) are big contributors to MoveOn, with Linda Pritzker, a billionaire Tibetan Buddhist, transplanted from Chicago to western Montana, having given a reported $4 million alone to the Soros group.
Now, Democratic Party sources report, that pool of cash is being targeted towards buying up superdelegate endorsements for Barack Obama. Former Senator and Presidential candidate John Edwards signed up for the Obama campaign one day after his antipoverty group received big financial backing from a string of other Soros-bankrolled groups, including Center for American Progress Action Committee and ACORN. Both groups are on the short list of “approved” organizations, funded by Soros’ Democracy Alliance, an organization launched by Soros in 2004, and made up of 70 billionaires, who agreed in 2004 to pool their funds, to take over the Democratic Party.
Lyndon LaRouche has emphasized that the Anglo-Dutch financial oligarchy, which created and owns British agent George Soros, has no intention of actually allowing Barack Obama to be elected President. His sole mission is to stop Hillary Clinton from getting the nomination. There is good reason to believe that George Soros is totally aware of, and in on, this plan. Soros has been a major financial backer to John McCain, according to a variety of published reports. When McCain and Sen. Russ Feingold were pushing their McCain-Feingold campaign finance reform bill through the Senate, Soros front groups gave a reported $18 million to the effort to mobilize support. And more recently, Soros’ Open Society Institute was a major donor to McCain’s Reform Institute.
