Campaign Fund Pledge “Take-Back” Fallout

The story of Barack Obama revisiting and redacting his pledge to take public campaign funds has been out for a day now. Generally speaking this announcement has been met with disapproval and disappointment, except by kool-aid drinkers at the HuffyPot.

* Well, hold your hats, the WaPo today slapped Obama for his change of, er, heart(?).

BARACK OBAMA isn’t abandoning his pledge to take public financing for the general election campaign because it’s in his political interest. Certainly not. He isn’t about to become the first candidate since Watergate to run an election fueled entirely with private money because he will be able to raise far more that way than the mere $85 million he’d get if he stuck to his promise — and with which his Republican opponent, John McCain, will have to make do. No, Mr. Obama, or so he would have you believe, is forgoing the money because he is so committed to public financing. Really, it hurts him more than it hurts Fred Wertheimer.

Holy Cow! After recapping Obama’s statements about public financing from a little while ago (he was FOR it), the WaPo characterized his move this way:

Instead, he cast his abandonment of the system as a bold good-government move. “This is our moment, and our country is depending on us,” he said. “So join me, and declare your independence from this broken system and let’s build the first general election campaign that’s truly funded by the American people.” Sure, and if the Founding Fathers were around today, they’d have bundlers, too.

* And at Politico, a timeline of Obama statements on this topic are interspersed with video of him. Wow! Really, you must see this.

* Factcheck.org at Newsweek, called bs on Obama’s justification for his switch:

One reason, he said, is that “John McCain’s campaign and the Republican National Committee are fueled by contributions from Washington lobbyists and special interest PACs.”

We find that to be a large exaggeration and a lame excuse. In fact, donations from PACs and lobbyists make up less than 1.7 percent of McCain’s total receipts, and they account for only about 1.1 percent of the RNC’s receipts.

* The WSJ had this to say:

So much moral good was expected from “campaign-finance reform” that Barack Obama’s announcement yesterday that he will opt out of public financing for his Presidential run is an historic moment. Senator Obama is the first candidate since the law was passed in the 1970s not to take matching funds for the general election. Even candidate George W. Bush, flush with cash in 2000 and 2004, didn’t do that.

“Even candidate George W. Bush. . . didn’t do that.” Ouch!

* The New Republic, on the other hand, says Obama has an “inside game” where he is a ruthless SOB and an “outside game” where everything is straightforward.

The key with Obama is to distinguish between his inside game (i.e., mechanical, procedural, largely behind-the-scenes maneuvering) and his outside game (i.e., the policies/positions/stands he takes on the public stage). Obama has been as ruthless as anyone at playing the inside game, but less cynical than most when it comes to the outside game.

OK, so Obama tries to keep his evil twin from appearing to all the clueless masses, who get angel Obama. The evil twin operates in the bowels of politics and we just don’t see him? Some would call this schizophrenic. Or is it just a basketball metaphor gone bad?

* Of course, no friend to Obama, David Brooks of NYT, had an interesting op-ed today. He seems to have come to the conclusion that there are two Obamas.

But as recent weeks have made clear, Barack Obama is the most split-personality politician in the country today. On the one hand, there is Dr. Barack, the high-minded, Niebuhr-quoting speechifier who spent this past winter thrilling the Scarlett Johansson set and feeling the fierce urgency of now. But then on the other side, there’s Fast Eddie Obama, the promise-breaking, tough-minded Chicago pol who’d throw you under the truck for votes.

But the best part of this op-ed:

And Fast Eddie Obama didn’t just sell out the primary cause of his life. He did it with style. He did it with a video so risibly insincere that somewhere down in the shadow world, Lee Atwater is gaping and applauding. Obama blamed the (so far marginal) Republican 527s. He claimed that private donations are really public financing. He made a cut-throat political calculation seem like Mother Teresa’s final steps to sainthood.

Oh snap, did he say Lee Atwater? I have two quibbles with this op-ed. 1) WTH took you sooooooo long? and 2) It’s “bus” not “truck.”

* Also at the Politico, Ben Smith had this to say about what Obama’s “opt-out” says about him:

Obama’s move wasn’t out of character. In fact — though he has at times adopted popular reform causes — Obama has never been a traditional reformer.

He came to politics through the community organizing movement, whose radical founder, Saul Alinsky, mocked highbrow reformers, and focused instead on the acquisition and use of power, with the ends often justifying the means.
———————————-
Kerry’s campaign, Shrum wrote in his memoir, “No Excuses,” had a fierce internal debate over whether to opt out of public financing. Obama’s never seems to have seriously considered sacrificing its political advantage for a principle and seems cheerfully resigned to being chided by East Coast editorial boards.

Hey, east coast editorial boards!! Welcome to the underside of the bus!! No, it’s not a hydrogen one either.

* At realclearpolitics, Liz Sidoti started a disapproving analysis this way:

Barack Obama chose winning over his word.

and she finished it this way.

“You’ve fueled this campaign with donations of $5, $10, $20, whatever you can afford,” Obama said in an appeal seeking donations from $25 to $2,300 and beyond.

“Let’s build the first general election campaign that’s truly funded by the American people,” Obama said — ignoring the fact that the system he’s opting out of is paid for by taxpayers who donate $3 to the fund when they file their tax returns.

Obama blamed his decision in part on McCain and “the smears and attacks from his allies running so-called 527 groups.” But he failed to mention that the only outside groups running ads in earnest so far are those aligned with Obama — and running commercials against McCain.

So much for being a straight shooter.

* FoxNews (transcript at realclearpolitics), as might be expected, were not complimentary. Still, the roundtable with Brit Hume did provide some fun stuff. After showing a clip of Obama, Mort Kondracke of Roll Call had this to say:

They call that “liar, liar, pants on fire.”

Wow! The kindergarten slam - only used for the most OBVIOUS and IRREFUTABLE of lies.

Oh yeah. Huffypot. Well, what do you THINK is the prevailing opinion???
Come on, you KNOW.

Johnathan Solomon is quite happy:

Barack Obama has gone back on his word, Barack Obama is a hypocrite … I couldn’t be happier. With Obama turning down public financing, idealist can be heard saying, “Obama promised ‘a new kind of politics.’” Well, let him get to that once he’s in office.

Robert Creamer apparently had to work harder to twist himself around on this one:

As a life-long advocate for public financing of elections, I believe that Barack Obama’s decision not to participate in the current presidential public finance system will advance the day when we will finally have a true system of public financing for all federal races.

Google if you must. I don’t link to the ‘Pot.

Shades of things to come?

Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe has accused the opposition of lying about political violence in the country to cast doubt on forthcoming polls.

The opposition says at least 70 of its supporters have been killed and many more beaten in the run-up to next week’s presidential run-off election.

He also told supporters that “only God” could remove him from office.

BREAKING!!!

From huffingtontoilet.com

Medics rushed to the home of Robert Creamer after receiving an emergency 911 call.

Huffingtontoilet staffers would not elaborate as the to cause but un-named sources claim that his latest attempt to twist himself around the latest flip flop from the obama campaign and justify it led to what the source would only describe as a shockingly disturbing condition.

When pressed to describe the condition, the source would only say that “I dont know how he will ever play b-ball again. I hope they can help him.”

Inside sources were able to snap a picture with a concealed camera before medics arrived.

Shocking is right. We wish him the best.

Obama’s “goody two shoes” act is so transparent.

And his “Fast Eddie from Chicago” karma is piling up right out there in the open for everybody to gape at - BY THE HOUR!

He’s brazen about it. Shameless about it. He wears his skin like teflon tights.

So what’s with the poll numbers? Is he making them up too? Why the heck is this guy still neck and neck with McCain (or ahead of him) in national polls like Gallup?

Where’s the hint of buyer’s remorse? I haven’t seen it anywhere - not even on Fox News for God’s sake! Rove doesn’t even mention it (Maybe he’s too busy trying to stay out of jail.)

Is the blog world the only space where rose colored glasses (or payola, brass knuckles and death threats) don’t work???

Don’t you get it? It’s all a con. His supporters have known from the start that he’s a slick Chicago pol. The people we know who support him laugh about it, have all along. When confronted with his hypocrisy, they laugh and say, “well, it’s just politics.” He’s another George W. Bush and his administration will be just as disastrous.

For 8 years, Dems bashed Bush for fusing politics and religion.
Then the Dem establishment propped up a newbie senator who’s been indoctrinated for 20 years with fusing politics and religion!

Nice sum-up, Lisa….

As one editorial writer pointed out, Obama just killed campaign finance reform forever. *sigh*

But we all knew this would happen.

The world expects him to raise a shit-load of money for this campaign.

But I keep looking at the last months of the primary, where Hillary was beating him in spite of his money. It’s old-fashioned politicking that did the trick.

Not slamming ads on TV every 15 seconds. And not hiring droves of people to canvass. We already have that message. He’s got money and kids to knock on doors.

What McCain will do and is doing is more what works, in my opinion. Meet with people. Meet with them alot. Answer questions. Be open to the press.

Repeat. Rinse. Lather.

If Hillary could generate the huge wins by spending 1/4 of what Obama did, so can McCain.

McCain needs moderate surrogates speaking in the liberal states, and let the conservatives handle the red states.

Comment by AnninCa | 2008-06-21 11:12:09

jack too….the legitimate press is a lot of inexperienced journalists these days in large part.

The industry is pretty much decimated, so I think the reputation of “legitimate” is historical only.

Look at AP. The political stuff this year was nowhere close to objective or neutral. Now, they are going after sites that quote them and want money if you go over 39 words? LOL*

TV national news is a joke. Hillary is giving her speech in SD, and the talking heads are talking as though they are the news?

The news reports only on the news these days. Half the stories are self-referential. Why? Because they have no reporters anymore to generate real news.

Comment by jack, too | 2008-06-21 11:19:16

I remember, as a kid, watching news reports about the 80’s youth simply entering journalism to news read, in it for fame, and fortune, as opposed to civic responsibilty.

And here we are, with an true alternative press on the Internet, now, the death of the MSM.

Nature abhors homogeneity, I guess in part a function of evolution.

Even the fascist governments of China, and the former USSR could not sustain, no growth without truth.

Comment by jack, too | 2008-06-21 11:39:08

Journalists should,, at the very least, know the difference between right and wrong, and should be invested in saving, protecting, and maintaining their country from abuses of power.

Otherwise, really, given the power of the press, such as it is, they’re traitors, eunuchs to the wealthy.

Comment by Jeremiah God Damn AmeriKKKa Wright | 2008-06-21 11:51:28

Journalism degress are not required nor encouraged for MSNBC/CNN/HuffingtonPost.

A solid foundation in ass kissing and pandering to the Presumptive Selectident however is.

Comment by jack, too | 2008-06-21 12:00:06

Look at Judith Miller, though, and the rest of the Iraqi War/Obama crews.

Do you think it even occurred to them to question the ethics of what they did?

They’re good little corporate soldiers, the worst of corporate America, though, simply children, trying to earn Daddy’s love, but “Daddy” is Scooter Libby, Dick Cheney, or Karl Rove.

Ask them how effective, ethical, journalism protects the Constitution, our governemnt, and they can’t tell you. Even if they could, they’d trade it for a hundred thou a year, chump change.

It’s just some variation of the cartoon Frank Rich, all the way down.

GREAT POST ON CANNONFIRE. http://cannonfire.blogspot.com/

“Why we can’t “Get over it”: Threats from Obama cultists”

…Donna Brazille came right out and on a talk show with Maureen Dowd if Obama does not get the nomination “there will be blood.” She is also defending the Rev. Wright by saying an attack on him is an attack on the black church…..

…Back in February, talk show host Tavis Smiley put on a “State of the Black Union” event in New Orleans. Hillary showed up; Obama sent his regrets. Smiley offered a very mild public criticism of Obama. Guess what happened?

“There’s all this talk of hater, sellout and traitor,” Smiley said to me in a telephone interview. Smiley even mentioned getting death threats, but wouldn’t elaborate. He said his office has been flooded with angry e-mails. “I have family in Indianapolis. They are harassing my momma, harassing my brother. It’s getting to be crazy,” Smiley said.

John Fund, a conservative propagandist who has asked asked whether Obama practiced Islam in Indonesia, says that he has had his “life threatened.”

Hillary-supporting Philadelphia radio talker Steve Corbett attained nation-wide attention when he turned against Obama. Guess what happened to him?

In the thousands of emails I’ve received in the year that “Corbett” has been on the air, I have not received a single death threat - until yesterday.

“We will kill you when Obama become PRESIDENT OF USA.,” the email reads. “You would see!!!”…

What makes this threat to kill me all the more mysterious is that it appears to have been sent through Barack Obama’s official campaign website – barackobama.com – the website that sends me official announcements of Obama’s campaign comings and goings.
The emails I’ve been receiving daily about my unwavering support for Hillary Clinton, including a particularly nasty one yesterday from an Obama volunteer in Wilkes-Barre, have become increasingly aggressive.

So have some of the calls to my show.

This isn’t a game. It has been increasingly obvious some people involved with Obama have not ruled out threats and/or violence to get what they want. The threats, veiled and not so veiled, by some in the Democratic Party have set a perfect example for them. And we thought this could only happen in undemocratic countries.

Comment by jack, too | 2008-06-21 11:46:05

Right.

And others, smart people, will fight back, they don’t really have the ability to counter it, they’re not smart, the Obama bots.

And it’s a shame it has to come to this, but, you know, who the hell will allow themselves to be intimidated by some low IQ deluded dandelion seed poof?

(I’m thinking of scattered dandelion seeds, when one “poofs,” on the dried flower, they scatter).

I’m beginning to think we are living in a Banana Republic, what with all of these threats of violence, death, mayhem. It’s time for the FBI to get involved in a big way in exposing and prosecuting these Obama people. This is the United States, folks, and no one…NO ONE… is going to take your vote away from you. Brazile says that things will get bloody? If it does, it will be because of the actions of people like her and the rest of her Obama idiots. As Georgie once said…bring it on! I suspect the Obamabots will be the first to run for the trees. They are so afraid they are going to lose. People who feel they’re winning don’t resort to this kind of extreme behavior. That is about the only thing they’ve been right about. Obama is toast.

Comment by jmk | 2008-06-21 15:57:11

I’m glad some are starting to notice the ‘banana republic”. I lived and worked, on fringe of national politics, in a 3rd world country. The 1st time I saw bozo on TV I saw right through him - a typical sociopathic 3rd world gigolo on a power trip. Let me assure all he does not mind LYING - he ENJOYS it. He does not want to help. He wants to HURT.

And he is derivative of a mentality that has no concept of functioning democracy. To he and his, a campaign is WAR and ask Muhammed is quoted - you are supposed to LIE to your enemies - that’s the best strategy of war.

We are being diminished and degraded to the level of a 3rd world status, pre-democratic and as others are saying above it is only concerted ACTION of our citizenry that we will stop this tyrannical take over.

No joke. No exaggeration. Have seen it coming. There it is.

Tavis Smiley Will Cut Ties With Joyner Radio Show

One of Sen. Barack Obama’s toughest African American critics is quitting his long association with a national radio show after
facing a backlash from the program’s listeners.

Tavis Smiley said yesterday he will resign in June as a twice-weekly commentator on the syndicated “Tom Joyner Morning Show” after more than 11 years with the program.

Comment by wac for hillary | 2008-06-21 11:40:20

Tavis Smiley is such a class act. The one who should be leaving is Joyner.

Comment by Dakinikat | 2008-06-21 11:59:44

Tavis got all kinds of race traitor hate email when he criticized Obama for not coming down here to New Orleans personally to speak at the State of the Black Union conference. Obama offered up Michelle instead. Hillary stopped campaigning and came PERSONALLY to give her support and time. Obama has thrown black people under the bus many many times. He has totally and completely taken them for granted.

Tavis should be complimented and supported for standing up for what he believes! Obama could’ve come down here and spent some time. He’s been to New Orleans TWICE since Katrina and only to give speeches at TWO private colleges. He’s really done less for New Orleans than Hillary, Edwards, and even McCain.

Time is running out to help Hillary Clinton retire her campaign debt. She is forbidden by law to use any of the public fund money to retire the debt. The more she is “helped” by Obama and the DNC thugs in the retirement of this debt, the more beholden to them she will be within the political system. If supporters will donate the cost of a coffee or pack of butts (whoever still smokes) or a cocktail or an ice cream, that will put a big dent in her debt. Thank you for listening!

typical irishman - pause and hear this -I thought like you did on this - I was wrong!

IT IS IMPORTANT. I got email verification from an indie group who phone conferenced with Hillary herself. The fact is if we don’t help retire her debt - obama is ONLY TOO GLAD to do so - and will expect more than she - or we - want to give in return. That’s a way they want to get her obligatedbefore the August convention!

Hillary made it very clear:
#1. By law, any contribution made to her campaign will NOT be forwarded or otherwise shared in any way with the DNC or obama campaign. None. Not at all. Only used to help pay her campaign debt.

#2 Hillary wants to remain free and clear of his influence. Usually the ‘loser’ of primaries has their debt paid off by the leader and the DNC. She does NOT want to do that and we should NOT want her to have to do that.

## So please all who possibly can let’s pitch in and help Hillary stay FREE AND CLEAR - on all our behalf. If we each could scrape out just $30, that would take care of it. That’s what I’m doing. Hope others will. I consider it an investment in preserving American democracy - as well as a THANK YOU to the ONLY candidate that has really stood up for US!

What has TM said about all of this? Haven’t listened to her since HRC stepped down, couldn’t handle the “he’s better on the issues” cop out, not swayed by the SC picks either. I wrote her to say this, and asked her if she really believed that he would be better just b/c he’s a DEM. Proof is in the pudding, he has caved ALREADY and blatantly, so who’s to say what else he’ll decide to do? I trust nothing. She shouldn’t have either, too bad on her.

Comment by AnninCa | 2008-06-21 11:47:09

My criticism of TM and TalkLeft is that they rushed to the unity pony before seeing what was going to emerge.

Now, they are left out of No Deal, and that group is going to expand exponentially. Obviously, some professionals are involved in that one.

But Talk Left is more about crime politics, anyway. Lots of their core readers were totally sick of the politic threads. And TM is more about getting back on the air. I have always thought she was mostly self-serving to the max.

As someone said, she’s schoolmarmish too often.

Obama Insults Half a Race

The Black Agenda Report

by BAR executive editor Glen FordFatherDayObamaCrowd

The Black man who wants to be president spends Father’s Day at church in loud and general denunciation of Black males. For added insult, he describes them as “boys.”

Barack Obama’s primary audience isn’t the conservative Black Pentecostal congregation, but “white social conservatives in a race where these voters may be up for grabs,” says the New York Times. In America, even the “Black” corporate candidate runs against Black people. How did such madness come to pass in 2008? Blame the Black “progressive” misleaders who failed to challenge Obama when they had the chance. Now it’s too late, and African Americans are reduced to objects of derision.

Obama Insults Half a Race

by BAR executive editor Glen Ford

“Obama used the occasion of Father’s Day to give Black males the back of his hand.”

FatherDayObamaChoir The Democratic presidential nominee-apparent seldom speaks directly to Black people, but when he does it is usually to denounce individuals once close to him or to criticize The Race in general for some moral failing. Thus it was no surprise that Barack Obama used the occasion of Father’s Day to give Black males the back of his hand, no doubt to the delight of millions of potential white supporters. Black males have “abandoned their responsibilities, acting like boys instead of men,” said Obama, citing statistics on female-headed households. “You and I know how true this is in the African-American community.”

Even the New York Times could see through Obama’s transparent bid for white approval at Black people’s expense. Reporter Julie Bosman noted that Obama “laid out his case in stark terms that would be difficult for a white candidate to make” - terms (such as boy?) that “his campaign hopes [will] resonate among white social conservatives in a race where these voters may be up for grabs.”

In effect, Obama is following an established American electoral tradition of running against Black people. He claims to be teaming up with Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh to promote legislation to combat a “national epidemic of absentee fathers.” However, Obama’s church rant was anything but “race-neutral” - it was targeted directly at Black males. By selecting the politically conservative (in Black terms) Apostolic Church of God as the venue for his blanket Black male denunciation, Obama also reminded whites that he is no longer a member of Trinity United Church of Christ, formerly pastored by Rev. Jeremiah Wright, also located on Chicago’s South Side.

“Obama’s church rant was anything but ‘race-neutral’ - it was targeted directly at Black males.”

To make himself acceptable to whites, Obama finds it necessary to shout out how unacceptable he finds the conduct of other Blacks.

Comment by DoroB | 2008-06-21 12:50:25

More from the BAR:

Obama goes race-specific-negative on Black people whenever it is useful in attracting white electoral support. Otherwise, he is studiously “race neutral” - a cynical device he deploys to avoid recognizing the pervasiveness of racial wrongs against African Americans. The candidate periodically offers loud and specific criticisms of Blacks, but prescribes no programs - not one - to address specific Black grievances. He feels quite secure with this cruel and crooked campaign posture, confident that no significant complaint will emanate from African American quarters - they are loyal, no matter what. And for that reason, they need not be respected.

The Black burden is even heavier than that. African Americans are expected to circle the wagons at the merest hint of racist threats to the candidate. Any slight to Obama, real or imagined, must be met with massive Black response, while Obama’s disregard of Black priorities and sensibilities is endlessly forgivable.

If women take a moment to realize that on every issue important to women, John McCain is not in their corner, that would help them get over it.”

Now - why is it that EVERY SINGLE PERSON I know who has spoken out against Obama is immediately threatened, bullied, insulted, and even have threats made against their lives and their family’s?

No one who speaks out against Hillary is afraid to do so - in fact, they revel in the attention as if it’s a badge of honor, same with McCain. And they aren’t threatened or ridiculed - just debated on policies, but still respected for their opinion.

Yet - say you’re for Hillary and against Obama and immediately, people you once thought you knew will not hesitate in calling you the most vile names you didn’t even know existed. Even to the point of threatening violence towards you.

Obama has not said one thing about this, no one from the DNC has. The media tries to bury it. While the police ignore it. Must we wait till there’s actual blood before someone will finally investigate to see if this is coming from a coordinated group (Chicago is where I would place my bets).

This needs to stop right now. No one should be threatened or harmed for their political views - that is the basis of American freedom.

This is the most disgusting thing I have ever seen and I couldn’t endure 4 more years of it should Obama win (you never know…dead people do miraculously awaken on election days and mysteriously cast their votes for Obama - or his thugs at the polling places will throw all ballots not cast for him away). The only remedy is to vote McCain in 2008 so we can get Hillary in 2012.

America comes first.

I think it is so pathetic the candidate of change continuously changes his position on the issues. This is not the kind of hope I want. I am tired of the empty speeches; empty because they have no substance. If Obama offers a policy issue on the campaign trail, chances are it was already tried. Nothing is new from the candidate except for his success with two words. Two meaningless words.

I am sure everyone would like to know Obama has raised $161,927 from lobbyists: http://www.obama-wire.com/obama_lobbyist.htm

I am sure everyone would to know Obama has a history on the campaign trail of never taking responsibility for the actions of his campaign; instead, he passes the buck off on his campaign: http://www.obama-wire.com/Apologies.htm

And now Obama has the audacity to suggest McCain will come after him on racial ground: http://www.obama-wire.com/racecard.htm

This guy is the biggest joke since 7 minute abs.

it seems that nobama with his epic flipflop on public funding has actually now included DNC (yes the DNC of the psycho dean) thrown under the bus.

Think about it.
When a candidate takes public funding, the contributions don’t stop but are redirected to the party, i.e RNC or DNC. In this case the little army of orcs that nobama has scrounged together would have still donated, although with less enthusiasm, and money would have gone to DNC. Most of the pie would still be spent on noabmi’s behalf but some crusts going to the other races.

So after the convention the candidates campaign spend 84 million and the RNC and DNC spend whatever was collected through private contributions. This is spent mostly on the presidential candidates behalf, but some on the congressional and senatorial candidates.

It is well known that Dart Axle-rod gets a cut from what the campaign spends. He is paid as a percentage of the money spent (whereas wolfson, hillary’s manager got paid a fixed amount).

If nobama had taken public funding, then the Darth axle-rod would have gotten a percentage of the money spent through the campaign, i.e. 84 million, although with some oversight from FEC, there are statutory rules on not only how much you spend of the taxpayer money, but how you spend it.

The money from the little army of nobama orcs that would have gone to the DNC would be spent OUT of the campaign and there would be no percentage for Axle-rod. That is expected to be 2 or 3 times the public funds, although from this months collections it sounds a little unrealistic.

If you were Axle-rod what would you like?
A percentage of 84 mil, with govt. rules.

or
an unregulated percentage of 2-3 times the 84 mil.

And who cares if the DNC is forced to beg on the street corner for a paltry 4 million a month. What goes around, comes around.

And if the messiah proudly throws another demeaning lie in the face of the sheep that is american public and media, so be it.
