The attitude or energy that emanates from and pushes the Obama movement forward is not about folks believing in his core goodness. Seems to me it would be difficult to associate with any of these people if one did not have a commanality with them. How in the world could anyone or WHY would anyone sit and listen to the hate and violence these people preach at every meeting unless one agreed in part or altogether with them. I can’t stand to listen to a lot of bible spouting preachers on TV simply because they teach a lot of things I do not believe, and they are not even preaching hate and violence. Obama must surely pocess within himself those thoughts and feelings of what he sits and listens too. I just can not see any other reason he would associate with those people if he did not enjoy a commonality with them.

At one time Obama employed several Farrakhan acolytes in high positions on his Illinois and U.S. Senate campaign and office staffs. Cynthia K. Miller, a member of the Nation of Islam, is or was the Treasurer of his U.S. Senate campaign. Jennifer Mason, whom he says is also a member of the Nation of Islam. Mason is or was Obama’s Director of Constituent Services in his U.S. Senate office and is also in charge of selecting Obama’s Senate interns. I say is or was because I am not sure if they are still there or living under that very crowded bus.

I still don’t understand why the IRS isn’t investigating both Trinity and St Sabine. It violates their tax exempt status to endorse a political candidate from the pulpit. Churches have been investigated for far less.

about his comments on Clinton.

Pfleger told the Chicago Sun-Times he felt free to speak about Clinton because he believed his sermon was not being recorded. He said he thought the live Internet link that normally broadcasts Trinity sermons was not running.

“They told me it was down,” Pfleger said. “Their live streaming had been down all day, and they didn’t know whether it was back up. … I regret the dramatization that I was naive enough to believe was just going to be kept among that church.”

In other words, no remorse over the words……but that he got “caught” saying them.

Great post, Amy! I’m from the South Side of Chicago and I can tell you, not all of Chicagoans like that guy. He’s big with St. Sabina because he’s managed to bring in the money to the Archdiocese. That’s why they have allowed him to stay well past the amount of time that any other Pastor is allowed to stay in a Parish. The reason that rule is set up by the Vatican is because of this type of situation! He’s become bigger than the Church, itself, in the eyes of his Parish Community. He lost an semblance of humility.

Cardinal George should have immediately transferred that guy to a parish out in some dessert somewhere, where he has few parishioners. Or, he should be banned from being a Pastor and relegated to paperwork in the Archdiocese office.

Not much here I could defend about the Revs.’s behavior, but I must speak on behalf of the “Up South” Chicago accent, proudly sported by millions of native Chicagoans who grew up under Southern-reared parents.

There are two faces to the Islamic people and their religion. One that embraces peace and one that embraces war. There is “Dar as-Salaam” or in english, “The House of Peace”, and there is “Dar al-Harb” or in english ” The House of War”. Of course the quran says “in the way of Allah”. Islam is obviously a religion but it is also an ideology with political goals. It is the contention of the Islamics that it is the destiny of Islam to broaden it’s control until the entire Dar al-Harb is subject to Islamic Law in an Islamic state. The word Islam does not mean peace (salaam) as some seem to think, but rather it (Islam) means “to surrender” or “submit” or make “peace” by laying down one’s arms in submission. Therein “Dar al-Salaam, and Dar al-Harb” lies the arguement for both peace and violence in the Islamic world. One leading the way to radical Islam. Then there are the christian versions of the same ol same ol–peace and violence. Depending on who people listen to. Obama chose to listen to the violent version , obviously, he continued with Rev Wright for 20 years.

You do realize that Rezko and Obama scooped up Obama’s ‘home’ at the same time the Olympic facility locations in Washington Park were being identified. The Olympic proposal committee began to look at linking the Chicago Olympic bid with promotion of AA minority businesses and development in order to convince Daley to let Chicago go into the 2016 Olympic bidding process (he had been saying no re this whole issue for awhile). Those planning details would have been non-public — maybe even confidential — up to a certain point, but given Rezko’s tight connections to the real estate business generally and Obama’s political connections, I suspect that they would have learned about the facility plans before the public would. I also vaguely recall that Obama was somehow connected to one of the exploratory committees re the Olympics, as well as being involved in various organizations concerned with AA minority contracting (by Rezko and others).

Obama’s ‘home’ and Rezko’s ‘investment lot’ is about 2 blocks away from Washington Park. Thus it is probably in the zone for either city expropriation at ‘reasonable’ amounts if Chicago’s Olympic bid is successful, or, if his house’s heritage designation trumps the Olympic development plan, he would doubtless be in line for restoration etc. grants.

It might be very interesting for someone to plot out the locations of Rezko’s slum investments relative to the proposed Olympic facilities. And of course he did not expect to be indicted, charged, bankrupted, etc. So it would also be interesting to see who bought up his interests. (Cf. the ‘investment lot,’ which had been purchased in his wife’s name and then, when events caught up with that messy fact, title was transferred to someone in the law firm of which Rezko has been a client for decades and which is where Obama got his first law job after telling Rezko that he was not interested in working for Rezko directly in Rezko’s slumlord operations.)

In Evanston, graduates whose parents paid fortunes for degrees from Northwestern University sat damply as the boss of the Chicago Democratic machine received an honorary law degree and gave a commencement speech about his “life’s passion for public service.”

The students were scolded by local media for objecting to Mayor Richard Daley as their speaker, and I’ve got a feeling many were resentful. They probably can’t wait until November, when they can vote for U.S. Sen. Barack Obama, who has been relentlessly marketed by the Daley boys as America’s great reformer.

But back at City Hall on Friday, those same students missed a whopper of a political science class. It was dry and boring for several hours in the Zoning Board of Appeals.

Then Jimmy Banks walked in, with his Grand and Harlem razor cut, his blue suit and blue tie, one of the top zoning lawyers in a city of builders, a member of the first family of Chicago zoning.

It’s possible that Jimmy Banks would be a top zoning lawyer even if his uncle, Ald. William Banks (36th), weren’t chairman of the council’s Zoning Committee. It’s also possible that I may run 100 meters in 9.8 seconds, in my robe and slippers, smoking a cigarette, after two toasted onion bagels.

At issue was Banks’ client, Rudy “King Rudolph” Acosta, the former gangsta rap impresario turned real estate developer, who built a gigantic castle in a Northwest Side neighborhood overlooking the Kennedy Expressway and casting giant shadows on the modest bungalows nearby. The last time I wrote about it, a month or so ago, we talked about Rudy’s luck, how getting shaken down by allegedly crooked cops for $112,000 in cash and guns didn’t stop him from getting a series of zoning changes from the Banks family to build that ridiculous castle of his.

Banks didn’t stop there. He wanted his client to enjoy the benefits of an 8-foot stone wall, the better to keep the peasants at bay. The peasants showed up at a Zoning Board of Appeals meeting to fight the wall, and it was postponed for weeks, the Chicago Way, to tire them out.

On Friday, they showed up at City Hall again, although instead of the 20 who were there last time, this time there were but 10. Then a strange thing happened. Jimmy Banks backed off.

“Chairman,” he said to zoning appeals chairman Brian Crowe, Daley’s former top city lawyer, “I will make this short. Actually quite short. . . . I respectfully withdraw the case that is before the court this afternoon.”

He saluted, smiled at the dumbfounded neighbors, and waltzed off.

One theory is that Banks backed away because the 36th Ward organization is experiencing federal heat. Another theory suggests a growing rift between the Banks family and State Sen. Jimmy DeLeo (D-How You Dooin?), with whispered speculation that Ald. Banks may retire. Here’s my theory: Heat = Pressure x (DeLeo/feds) x (Bankses/feds).

King Rudy can’t be finished. A fellow who is so inventive as to survive cop shakedowns, skip criminal charges, get his $112,000 in cash back, and hire Jimmy Banks—that is one resourceful man.

The neighbors, who took off from work, found child care, used their vacation days, were stunned. They don’t believe this is the end of the story.

“It’s a little too hard for us to figure out,” neighbor Dorene Jordan said to the board. “I guess I’m asking for your help. Who do we go to? We don’t know who to go to.”

Chairman Crowe, Daley’s guy on the board—they’re all Daley’s guys—said he couldn’t help.

“You’re all finding this out before I am,” said Crowe, expressing befuddlement.

But the neighbors figure they know what will happen. It’ll happen when they’re not watching. And they won’t like it.

Other zoning board members stood silent, including Jonathan Swain, who works for controversial priest and Obama supporter Rev. Michael Pfleger. But before Swain belonged to Pfleger, he was Daley’s.

The national news media is of the mistaken belief that Pfleger is some radical cleric. Not where the mayor is concerned. Swain handles Pfleger’s non-profit housing developments, which have received millions of dollars in city help. Pfleger is in effect Daley’s precinct captain. He’s always ready to shout down Daley’s opponents as racists. And City Hall backs Obama, the Chicago Way.

NU graduates aren’t required to write a paper on this. But they might want to think about it, when they vote for reform in November.

Note: Two weeks ago I meant to honor a friend, an old steelworker from South Chicago, but I didn’t use his full name. It is Phil Janik. He wrote notes every morning before working at Wisconsin Steel and left these on the breakfast table. His daughter, the fine Chicago poet Phyllis Janik, incorporated the notes in parts of her work. Many of his stories about the now-shuttered Wisconsin Steel mill will be part of a history of the Southeast Side scheduled to be published in 2009.”(end quote)

There’s something wrong with him. I have a former student who went to England for a month and has affected a British accent ever since. The boy ain’t right (as we say in my native South). Pfleger “ain’t right” either.

It is truly pathetic that after the great Martin Luther King, Jr.’s death, the African-American community in this country has been led by self-aggrandizing hucksters and conspiracy theorists who sew hatred and despair. Hope is indeed audacious in such a community–but it is so precisely because of the relentless negativity and victimology espoused by men like Pfleger and Wright and Farrakhan.

It disturbs me to no end that Barack Obama was so comfortable in the company of these men for the past 20 years. This alone disqualifies him from the presidency.

Was Pfleger trying to sound “Southern” or trying to sound “black”? It was a bit confusing. Okay, so Bill loves Louis and Louis loves Bill. Somewhere in the middle they mentioned Jesus, although it was unclear what He had to do with anything going on there. The reference to the mural depicting a “black Jesus” is interesting: an image just as false as the “blonde Jesus”. Mainly, I came away impressed with how much Farrakhan and Pfleger love hearing applause and praise for themselves. Does that remind you of anyone running for President? It is all about cult-like worship.

Many Sunday nights–which are slow news days, generally—or a good part of them, we in Chicago are treated to a “news” story about Father Pfleger’s latest protest, march or activist stance. When he is interviewed, he speaks in a normal accent that is common in Chicago. That preacher man stuff is strictly for the pulpit.

Now let us examine the past words of Farrakhan. Nah I can’t understand why there are those that think he had something to do with Malcolm’s death, or that he hates Jews.
