It’s all over the press that beginning Friday, Hillary Clinton will be fundraising with the presumptive nominee, Barack Obama. For many of us, I’d say at least a few million, this is a nauseating thought. While we respect Hillary for her loyalty, we will not be joining her efforts. In fact, for me at least, Hillary’s choice to support Obama reminds me of the battered wife returning home to her batterer. Often, these women have no choice. And I think in a way that’s true for Hillary. She’s a Democrat before all else and I’m sure there are other complicated factors. But in a Salon article entitled: Why Clinton Supporters Will Come Back to the Fold, Walter Shapiro argues that I’ll change my mind. His piece carries the subtitle:
Don’t worry about those angry Hillary supporters who say they’ll vote for McCain or stay home in November. History proves they’ll vote for Obama.
The article shows a photo of a Hillary’s supporter, a woman of course, crying and being comforted by another. But this melodramatic display of emotion, Shapiro suggests, is just bluffing. First, to continue the theme of a domestic spat, he compares us to nagging parents. Perhaps because that insult is too banal, he then compares us to George Bush:
As an empty threat, it ranks right up there with “Eat your spinach now or your mother and I won’t pay for college” or even George W. Bush’s taunting promise to get Osama bin Laden “dead or alive.” During the post-primary news lull, ardent Hillary Clinton supporters have managed to linger in the spotlight with their over-hyped warnings that they intend to sit on their hands or even bolt to John McCain if they are not wooed and won over by Barack Obama.
Yes, the sexism is there: we’re waiting to be wooed. And of course Clinton supporters are holding out because some people, women specifically, are fanning the flames of “feminist grievances. ” Here Shapiro perpetuates the Obama campaign’s sexist stereotyping of Hillary’s supporters by focusing on women, when in fact there are many men actively protesting Obama’s stolen nomination. But when the “Barack-and-Hillary show” goes on air, and the pundits wonder:
Was the joint appearance enough to win over the hardcore Hillary holdouts? The answer is an obvious “yes”…
Shapiro makes the same mistake as others outside the circle of Just Say No Deal PUMAs. He thinks that during the primary there was no “overriding issue…absolutely no ideological reason — beyond ruffled feelings” to keep Clinton supporters from voting for Obama. In fact, he says that the polling done today will not stand up in November:
For example, an ABC News/Washington Post Poll last week found that 24 percent of the Democrats who backed Clinton prefer McCain over Obama. But these numbers will certainly decline as base Democrats gravitate to their party’s nominee with increasing enthusiasm.
Citing studies that indicate that voters come back to the party even though their favorite candidate lost the nomination,” Shapiro seems to think that we will be convinced that Obama WON the nomination. We know that he did not win. This is no longer about Hillary, this is about the corruption of the Democratic leaders. Shapiro joins the ranks of Dean, Pelosi, Brazile, and the Obama-loving media who think we are simple-minded vacuous creatures who will ultimately follow them like sheep to the slaughter. He says:
A common theory is that disgruntled voters, troubled by the direction of their party, end up staying home in November. But with a record-smashing 36 million Democrats voting in the presidential primaries, this is not shaping up as a political year in which anyone will neglect to vote because, say, Whole Foods was having a sale on organic olive oil that day.
Again resorting to sexist stereotyping, Shapiro suggests that “the hardcore Hillary-types” will vote for Obama instead of shopping for olive oil. The media, and the Obama campaign, which of course includes the DNC, since they are now one and the same, are expecting us to develop collective amnesia.
We are going to forget all about Barky stealing the nomination, and insulting Hillary and her supporters. We’re going to forget the farce of the primary, that the decision to put Barky in place came before the first caucus cheating ever happened. We’re going to get over the misogyny and the sexism and the accusations of racism, and the elitism. We’re going to forget that many of us have received death threats from Barky’s insane followers, that our families have been threatened, and that we blog in full knowledge that we could be outed and viciously attacked at any time. We’re going to get over the fact that Barack Obama is an inexperienced, unqualified, two-faced, and a potentially dangerous politician with roots deep within the corrupt Chicago Machine.
Shapiro is certain that we’ll come around, though, even if we don’t know it yet. Well, maybe not those bitter, gun-toting, religious nuts–the blue-collar Dems, but those us who are “errant voters,” we will. In an analogy that is surely a Freudian slip, Shapiro claims that we will be guided by the lights of a roadside hotel, where cheap tricks are scored and whores are on the make, that is, the hijacked Democratic Party:
Party unity is never total — and there certainly are blue-collar Democrats who opted for Clinton in the primaries because she was a placeholder for their qualms about Obama. But for over-the-hill-with Hillary voters, passionate about the notion of a woman president or beguiled by all things Clinton, there will be no dramatic renunciation scene in their political future. Virtually all of them will be voting for Obama, whether they know it now or not. For a political party is a bit like Motel Six, where there is always a light on to guide errant voters home in the dark.

He can cite whatever historical situations you wish. The fact is there has never been a primary like this one — so let’s throw history out the window, shall we? Us ‘angry Hillary supporters’ don’t just need to calm down and take a walk. Long held valuable principles govern our actions, not anger or bitterness. Political smarts and an ability to know a sham when we see one forms our decisions and the course we will take. Perhaps that is too uncomfortable a truth for the pundit class to process.
A number of us have already left the Democratic Party and registered as Independents. No matter if Democrats in the past have shown they wouldn’t know how to pick a winning candidate if it bit them, or have not exhibited the spine we would like in Congress, we stuck with them through thick and thin because we thought they stood for something. Now that the DNC has thrown its own principles under the bus, and with them, our voices, which have consistently been ignored, it is much easier for us to walk away.
We will not support Senator Obama for President is that he is not qualified for the job. In fact, there has never been a less qualified or more shape-shifting candidate for President.

Well, “Old Lady”, you might want to offer your criticisms AFTER making certain your own post is free of spelling and grammatical errors.
For starters, you used a period after addressing Sonia (it should have been a comma) and then you have the audacity to use the ellipsis (. . .) incorrectly TWICE. Where you used it the first time, you should have simply used a comma or a hyphen (even a semicolon would be acceptable). In the second instance, a simple period should be used. To be absolutely proper,however, you didn’t actually make a complete sentence (”As you can see as it is used in this post” is merely a dependent clause).
Then when you decided to issue the critique about appearing illiterate, you left yourself open to making yourself appear, if not illiterate, then poorly educated. There was no need for a comma between “trying to say” and “appear illiterate”.
You also (for some reason) chose to use “any thing” rather than “anything” (the more correct form). Splitting the word can be done for effect but, in this case, it was unnecessary.
You also blew it right at the end of your diatribe. You failed to capitalize the first word in the sentence AND you failed to punctuate the end of the sentence.
Take your own advice, “Old Lady”, and get some education before attacking someone else’s grammar.
Last time I checked, you don’t start a sentence with a lower cased letter and after referring to someone by name, try using a comma and not a period. This makes you appear to be illerate as well.

He, with his wife and children, belonged to a divisive and racist church for over 20 years and only renounced the church and Reverend Wright when it was politically critical for him to do so.
Senator Obama says he barely knows Tony Rezko and that he wasn’t the man he knew. But the facts are that convicted criminal Tony Rezko helped him buy a house, he received $250K in campaign contributions and allowed Rezko’s slum holes to flourish in his State Senate district while likewise claiming ignorance. Senator Obama expects us, the American people, to believe him when says he barely knows the man and only did five hours of work for him years ago.
I will not even delve into his long working relationship with the man from the Weather Underground, ex-terrorist Bill Ayers, which he has likewise downplayed and/or denied.
This is a man with a questionable record on women’s rights, voting ‘present’ numerous times, who has also said “many pro-choice Democrats don’t understand that abortion is a wrenching moral issue.” Really? How insulting.

It would be nice to see if naive voters actually get their sh!t together and slap down both parties. Most articles (and Obama drones) are correct…. statistically, most voters do vote party line. I have a suggestion. Go read the declaration of independance. besides the literal, there is a meaning behind those words. It is about the right to revolt, the obligation we have to fight oppression. Adams, Jefferson and Franklin were not just writing about england, they were writing about all oppression, and all oppressive governments, and they were not just writing for their time but for all time. Read some of John Adams other writings, he makes a pretty strong legal case for revolt.

Mr. Shapiro, Obama, the DNC, the MSM, and the trolls just don’t get it. They hear what we are saying but they do not believe people who voted for Hillary Clinton have the brains and character to put democracy before party.
They don’t get that the reasons Obama and the DNC have given us to NEVER vote for Obama are too numerous to list in one place.
They don’t get that no candidate, even one as great as Hillary Clinton, could harden our resolve as much as the DNC and Obama have themselves.
They don’t get that it takes something monumental to bring millions of people together in revolt. We aren’t petulant or peevish or sulking because we didn’t get our way. We are resolved in our convictions.
They can’t get us back with sweet talk, empty promises, or treating us like children by telling us to “get over it”.
They aren’t going to get us back unless they make it right. They can’t make it right by promising to do better in the future. That’s why I couldn’t sign the pledge - you can’t patch decay and expect it to get healthy. There is only one way they can make it right.
They can’t make it right by putting Hillary on the ticket, unless it is for President. I greatly admire and respect Hillary, Bill and Chelsea but they could put all three of them on the ticket for VP it still wouldn’t make it right. There is only one way to make it right.
The day the DNC took votes away from Hillary and gave them to Obama is the day they lost most of us. We have found out much since, which has hardened our resolve and grown our coalition. But the day Obama lost my vote forever came even before we realized democracy was slipping away - it was the day he made fun of Hillary. That one incident showed his true character and his lack of respect for not only women, but all people. Look at all those he has thrown under his bus since.
They don’t get it. That is to our advantage. They will either waste their time and money trying to bring us back or they will write us off as so few it won’t make a difference.

Clinton, who gave the Democratic presidential candidate’s energy policy faint praise over the weekend, has not yet said in public that he would support Obama.
“President Clinton is obviously committed to doing whatever he can and is asked to do to ensure Senator Obama is the next president of the United States,” Clinton’s spokesman Matt McKenna told Reuters in a one-sentence e-mail.

On Sunday, Bill Clinton made his first public address since his wife ended her presidential campaign on June 7 after Obama clinched enough support to be the Democratic nominee in the November election.
The only time he mentioned Obama during a speech to the U.S. Conference of Mayors was when Clinton said he preferred the Democrats’ energy policy to that of Republican rival John McCain.
The former first lady has endorsed Obama, urged her supporters to rally behind him and is scheduled to campaign with him on Friday in Unity, New Hampshire.
But her husband, the last Democrat to be U.S. president, has not yet done so and ignored journalists on Sunday when asked when he might publicly endorse Obama.

You can map quest it and simply put in Unity Elementary School in place of “business” Unity is a town of only 1,700 so I doubt that there will be a crowd of 10,000. A couple hundred Puma’s would make the news and the place will be crawling with national media because this the first appearance of Hillary and Obama together. What’s amazed me is that they ignored the obvious from Day 1. Exit polling was consistent throughout the race. A clear 25-38% of voters told pollsters that they would vote for McCain over Obama.

Bush, though, had other plans. When we confronted Obama with this information about a year ago by fax letter, he wasn’t interested and REFUSED to reply to us. We are anti-war and so we thought that we would get some response from Obama. We, also, represent China’s current succession Emperor, who is China’s head of state in exile as China’s Emperor. Barack turned both of us down and so we can not see how this man can say what he says about being anti-war.
Every time he is caught in a lie, he never confesses and continues to lie about an incident as if he had no conscience and he tries to twist the truth/allegation!
We find Mr. Sinclair to be most credible and we saw the video of his press conference, where journalist instead of asking questions of Mr. Sinclair in an effort to determine truth, used questions to condemn Mr. Sinclair and they tried to make him look bad!
This can not be, not especially in our nation of upright laws and good people!
For these and many other reasons, Mr. Obama should either explain, relinquish his candidacy, and come clean. Doing so for our nation’s good!

Saying that they were “undecided” while attacking the Clinton’s made their race baiting have that much more power to the average viewer who wasn’t paying attention on a daily basis and for that they are probably the worst of the people I’ve mentioned. Who in their right mind comes away from hearing Bill Clinton talk about Obama’s position on the Iraq war and likening it to a “fairy tale” says, “thats racist!” Why was it so bad to be compared to Jesse Jackson? The way Obama supporters talked, it was like you just compared Obama to Hitler. President Clinton was only saying that South Carolina could be won and not be a deciding factor. Just like Jesse Jackson in 88. It had nothing to do with Jackson being black. It had to do with Bill knowing that Obama could win South Carolina but Hillary could still win the nomination like Dukakis did. This election season has killed my love of politics. I can only hope four years from now, Hillary can bring it back.
Oh and for PUMA members. Please, if you have donated to Hillary Clinton during the primary, make sure you donate at least one time to John McCain. Send a message to the DNC by showing that we are not all going to “fall in line”. Nothing gets their attention like losing donors. So, even if its five dollars, donate to John McCain. That’s a ludicrous analogy, and also highly insulting to Hillary Clinton.
Hillary Clinton is nobody’s victim, least of all Barack Obama’s. She’s a very strong competitor who ran a hotly contended race with another strong competitor. There were some irregularities regarding the race, which everyone is fully cognizant of, and no one is particularly happy about. But I haven’t heard Hillary Clinton bitterly denouncing her opponent, or proclaiming that the race was fixed, or calling herself a victim who is now being forced into subservience to the man she raced against.
I’d have expected a hell of a lot more respect for Hillary than that from some of her strongest supporters.
You want a better example of the battered wife syndrome the author speaks of so glibly? How about an America brutalized by republican rule for 8 years, crawling meekly back to the republicans?
