POLLS: Obama’s Obvious Weakness on National Security Takes Its Toll

The boost in the wake of the primaries about which Obama supporters have been gloating has evaporated.  According to Gallup’s three day tracking poll, Obama and McCain are now tied at 45%.

Obama also trails McCain in the important state Missouri by a margin of seven points in a poll Survey USA released today.  McCain has already consolidated the support of a slim majority, or 50%, of Missourians, while Obama underperforms at 43%.  Consider Missouri a red state in 2008 now that superdelegates selected Obama as the Democratic nominee.

Perhaps PUMA, Just Say No Deal and I Own My Vote are finally affecting polling data.

Another explanation is Obama’s obvious weaknesses on issues of national security.  According to another poll Gallup released today, Obama trails McCain by a staggering 25 points on this important aspect of the Presidency.

And while Obama has attempted to neutralize these concerns in his recent advertisement entitled “Country I Love,” he exacerbated this problem by taking credit for extending health care benefits for veterans when he in fact did not even vote on the bill he cites in the commercial.  This, I believe, will not resonate well with voters who are preoccupied with national security, and I imagine it will have electoral effects.

Continue to support PUMA, Just Say No Deal and I Own My Vote, for our votes will decide the outcome of the election in November.

The GOP 527’s have it easy this year! So many exaggerations and lies, so little time.

Whatever happend to BO’s 15 point lead as reported by Newsweek. This is the kind of BS you don’t find at http://www.obama-wire.com

Comment by Mary | 2008-06-25 19:27:26

The Newsweek Poll was skewed to favor Obama.

They only polled 23% Republicans, and raised the number of Dems and African Americans to pump his “winning” numbers.

NEVER trust a poll from Newsweek or MSNBC.

Comment by AnninCa | 2008-06-26 08:51:25

Apparently, the Bloomberg poll yesterday had the same flaw.

I was also stunned. But I knew Claire McCaskill and the corrupt St. Louis County machine was stuffing the ballots for Obama when they had not reported at 11pm. Notice he won by a mere 10,000, and those votes were from inner city St. Louis and St. Louis County.

Comment by wac for hillary | 2008-06-25 20:33:39

I hope Claire is given her walking papers when she comes up for reelection. I’m also hoping Blanche Lincoln has an opponent I can vote for.

PUMA’s should run against unopposed candidates that need to be unseated (kind of like delegates?) and PUMA can help build them up! I think PUMA is going to be huge! Move on? Move over!

Comment by NoObamislamists | 2008-06-25 18:38:42

Also notice how Gallup downplays anything that’s positive for McCain. His lead is insignificant, it’s unclear how it will help McCain, the Gallup pollster’s must be besides themselves trying to spin this as a positive for Obama.

Comment by Gabriel | 2008-06-25 18:45:50

When well the 527’s finally come out against Obama??? And where were they when Hillary was running against BO??? And are we sure they well ever come out agianst BO???

Comment by Curious | 2008-06-25 18:57:29

The won’t come out until they have to. Most likely, after both conventions in Sept/Oct. Why waste their money now? Polls are a tad meaningless right now, until the VP’s are chosen or a candidate makes a huge gaffe.

Comment by Susan | 2008-06-25 19:04:01

After the convention IMO – they probably don’t want to take a chance on the democrats having time to nominate a stronger candidate. They are probably jumping for joy with the chance to run against Obama.

Comment by PhxNickD | 2008-06-25 19:06:28

they are ecstatic, they have made that known for quite some time. they are not going to risk anything until he formally takes the nomination from the convention.

Comment by SBwa | 2008-06-25 19:05:17

A lot of his “small donors” may actually be foreign contributors, giving $ in violation of the law. Others have blogged on this issue — basically, there is no way of knowing whether he is taking money from Libya or countries in Africa and the Middle East, or Europe for that matter. There are a lot of outside parties willing to finance him.

The Manchurian Candidate named Barack Hussein Obama will destroy our country if he is elected. That is a certainty, like the sun rising in the east or Jeremiah Wright hatin’ on white folks.

The man who embraces and is embraced by terrorists is ready to throw open the doors to our nation’s borders for his fellow travelers to come on in and destroy from without while he destroys from within.

Michelle hates America. So does Wright, and Ayers. Dorhn despises this land. Farrakhan dreams of segregation.

Barack loves and is loved by these people. He married one of the most ungrateful yet privileged women this country has likely ever produced. That is not an accident.

Sorry, “Che” is not going to destroy my country, our great Republic.

John McCain did 5 years in Hanoi so you could bow down to a crack-smoking joke who plays the race card. He earned my respect, while you and your golden calf have earned nothing.

By the way, PUMA is paying our debt, she was working for US.

So, F*ck Off. Or meet up with you buddy BO, and he will do it for you.

Comment by fran | 2008-06-25 20:48:32

FYI: Hillary’s many of Hillary’s big donors are refusing to bundle for the Prince. They are giving the $2,300 as a courtesy to Hillary, because she asked them, but stonewalling on the big money.

My sister lives in Boston, and she is called regularly by the BO campaign. They harass and harass, “JOIN OBAMA FOR AMERICA!” She debated and informed them the first few times, now she just cuts them short and says, “I’m voting McCain.” That gets rid of them quickly.

Remember when starlet Scarlett Johansson said she had an e-mail relationship with Obama, which raised eyebrows and brought criticism? He denies it and in a rather rude way:

http://blog.washingtonpost.com/the-trail/2008/06/24/obamas_emails_with_scarlett_jo.html

By Shailagh Murray
LOS ANGELES — As he headed to a Hollywood fundraiser, Sen. Barack Obama downplayed the idea that he hobnobs with actress Scarlett Johansson.

The movie star, who campaigns actively for the Illinois senator, recently told the website Politico, “You’d imagine that someone like the senator who is constantly traveling and constantly ‘on’ – how can he return these personal emails? But he does, and in his off-time I know he also calls people who have donated the minimum to thank them.”

She said Obama had responded to one note about a debate, commenting to her that the questions were “silly.”

But speaking to reporters aboard his campaign plane, Obama said the actress doesn’t have his personal email address. “She sent one email to Reggie, who forwarded it to me,” Obama said, referring to his 26-year-old personal assistant, Reggie Love. “I write saying, ‘thank you Scarlett for doing what you do,’ and suddenly we have this email relationship”

Now I can see some B-list actress making up a story for publicity, but Johansson is about the hottest actress in Hollywood (both physically and star-wise). So I take Obama’s explanation with a grain of — make that a pillar of salt. And that’s a Lot of salt.

(Hey, at least I didn’t steal the National Review line about him having denied he had a textual relationship with her.)

Comment by SBwa | 2008-06-25 19:08:52

Maybe this is just an indicator of the extent to which Scarlet was brainwashed. Having delusions of a relationship with your messiah/idol sounds about right for the Barcky cult.

Are you saying that Sen. Numbnutz came up [gasp!] “short” in this would-be relationship?

Are you saying that when Woodward & Bernstein write all this up in ‘09, one of the main players will be a shady character named “Shallow Throat?”

Comment by Thomas | 2008-06-25 20:06:56

What’s wrong with a 47 year old man emailing, at all hours, a 23 young woman… … … … ..?

Comment by Peggy Sue | 2008-06-25 19:08:02

Those double digit polls are bogus. Remember the “leads” Obama presumably had in Ohio and Texas and Pennsylvania. I remember Chris Matthews reporting there was a 35,000 people rally on Independence Square and over 5,000 people waiting for Obama at one of the suburban train stops. If the people were there, they were out of staters. We all saw how the vote went.

The polls showing huge leads are skewed by over representing Dem respondents. The Gallup polls don’t show anything like that. If anything the race is neck to neck with no appreciable “bounce” for the BO campaign. It’s going to be a long, hot summer.

Obama’s people are trying to control the message and will continue to do that–faux support, bogus numbers and hysteria. The illusion is one that says the “race is over, long live the King!” And Hillary supporters? Well, we’re not suppose to count for anything.

This man “has” to be defeated!

Wake up America.

Friday could be a big day for all the Hillary supporters to show that they are united, not just a bunch of poor losers. Obama wants change well show him change. He will be shocked how united the Hillary supporters really are. Now the problem, how to go about doing it. You don’t just want to hear that a few people showed up in Unity NH and made a little fuss. What good will that do.

Comment by dms | 2008-06-25 19:19:39

Hillary is doing and saying all the right things that a good party person does so now her real supporters have to stand up and be here real voice. How important is it to have her 18 million supporters have a voice than win in November. McCain would love to see the dems continue to fight among themselves but he’s not setting the world on fire either. Look at the polls, he’s just hanging in there. So there is time to clean this mess up. So if your tired of being told to get over it, well speak up now when you have a chance. A perfect place to start the mission, Unity NH, what a shock that would be.

Comment by Thomas | 2008-06-25 19:49:33

Also, McCain is looking over his shoulder watching the Ron Paul insurgents. They refuse to go away.

Comment by Last Lemming | 2008-06-25 21:06:40

Are you kidding. With Bush hung like an albatross around McCain’s neck (do albatrosses hang?) he should be 25 points ahead. When Bush started out–granted Gore was no barn burner–but after Clinton’s relatively successful presidency, you wouldn’t expect Bush to be 25 points ahead of his chosen successor–but he was–he spent the next six months frittering away his lead. Obama hasn’t even started the frittering process.

Comment by sjl106 | 2008-06-25 21:32:39

frittering process? LOL obama should be at least 20 points ahead, this was suppose to be the year of the Democrat, but of course with all the corruption and the fact that people KNOW McCain is no bush, McCain will be the 44th President of the U.S. if the supers start giving a crap about the will of the poeple and nominate the rightful winner of the primaries.

Comment by susan | 2008-06-25 19:20:49

The real issue is not how well Obama or McCain might do in the closely divided battleground states, but that we shouldn’t have battleground states and spectator states in the first place. Every vote in every state should be politically relevant in a presidential election. And, every vote should be equal. We should have a national popular vote for President in which the White House goes to the candidate who gets the most popular votes in all 50 states.

The National Popular Vote bill would guarantee the Presidency to the candidate who receives the most popular votes in all 50 states (and DC). The bill would take effect only when enacted, in identical form, by states possessing a majority of the electoral vote — that is, enough electoral votes to elect a President (270 of 538). When the bill comes into effect, all the electoral votes from those states would be awarded to the presidential candidate who receives the most popular votes in all 50 states (and DC).

Because of state-by-state enacted rules for winner-take-all awarding of electoral votes, recent candidates with limited funds have concentrated their attention on a handful of closely divided “battleground” states. Two-thirds of the visits and money were focused in just six states; 88% on 9 states, and 99% of the money went to just 16 states. Two-thirds of the states and people are merely spectators to the presidential election.

Another shortcoming of the current system is that a candidate can win the Presidency without winning the most popular votes nationwide.

The National Popular Vote bill has been approved by 19 legislative chambers (one house in Colorado, Arkansas, Maine, North Carolina, and Washington, and two houses in Maryland, Illinois, Hawaii, California, Rhode Island, and Vermont). It has been enacted into law in Hawaii, Illinois, New Jersey, and Maryland. These states have 50 (19%) of the 270 electoral votes needed to bring this legislation into effect.

Wouldn’t it simply be easier (and Constitutional) to have states implement proportional representation in the distribution of state electors? Instead of the first-past-the-post system that it is now (exceptions are ME and NE).

FactCheck mentions that several of his ideas were used in this bill.

Funny how he supports those ideas so much he decides to not bother voting for it.

Comment by Un coup de des | 2008-06-25 19:22:14

Obama says he passed it. He did not. He did not even vote for it. And the date he cites in his commercial is the day Bush signed it into law. It is a misrepresentation, and he should pull the ad.

Comment by Patrick Walker | 2008-06-25 19:25:09

That may be so, but still it shows how disingenuous he really is.

I believe in my ideas so much, I won’t vote for them.

Hardly inspires confidence.

National vote is great but to late for this season. The Dems must also change their primary system too. I can’t believe after 2000 and 2004 they would let this happen to them again. But there is still time to correct the results, the convention is still in a few weeks.

Comment by Thomas | 2008-06-25 19:55:52

I concur. It ain’t over yet.

The real question is not can we force the roll call and allow Hillary’s growing momentum at the end of the primary season be fully counted but can we afford not to try.

I really don’t believe any of the polls. If you look at the poll predictions they have been a joke. Unless something odd happens, I reall believe that BO is going down in flames in Nov and I hope he takes Nancy, Harry, and Howard with him. Maybe we might get our party back.

It’s Hillary.

And, if you get a chance, listen to Chris Dodd speech last night on the floor of the Senate. It’s a little long, but, it makes you remember what a politician is suppose to think and say and feel.

What most Obama supporters don’t see either is that in November, it’s electoral votes that count. And to make matters worse, places like electoral-vote.com count states toward Obama even if he is leading by 1% according to some weird average. I can tell you that he is behind in the electoral vote. Most are toss-ups.

On top of this, Hillary would have had Missouri, Arkansas, Nevada and West Virginia for sure. She could have put Kentucky and Tennessee in play as well. Florida was definitely in play, but isn’t any more. Anyone that think Obama can win Florida is living in a dream world.

The signs are there for a landslide win for McCain. OR & CO are looking like they will turn red. PA & OH are now identical in the polls and McCain is making headway. That leaves GA, VA & NC for Obama to try and create something. There is no history of these going blue in recent times. They are in a dead heat, but there is no indication that Obama can realistically take any of these.

If you look at trends, Obama is not looking good. If you’re an Obama supporter, take comfort in the current numbers in those toss up states while you can.

Comment by It's Not Me | 2008-06-25 20:14:40

And to think….the electoral maps were showing HILLARY kickin’ McCain’s ass in the GE and BO was losing HUGE to McCain. That was COMPLETELY IGNORED by the DNC and the DC elites. Hillary could win this election EASILY in November.

I’m just hoping that BO’s poll numbers have TANKED by August. The Super Delegates just may chicken out on voting for the loser candidate and vote for Hill.

However, I do expect the polling companies to prop up BO’s poll number until AFTER the convention.

but…but…he’s wayyyy ahead in the polls, at least by double digits right? Yea, right. It’s going to be a long summer for Barry.

Comment by Thomas | 2008-06-25 20:36:19

Obama will not last past the FISA vote.

He only planned for winning the primary by savaging the Clinton legacy. Some Democrat. He doesn’t have a plan for the GE. He assumed Bush fatigue would allow him to coast into the Oval Office.

Comment by candymarl | 2008-06-25 21:04:03

Yes he’s way ahead in polls conducted by news organizations that have all but endorsed him.

They’ve written Op-Eds in his favor and run him on the cover as the nominee long before the end of the primaries. They ran headlines and stories for weeks asking why Hillary wouldn’t drop out.

Now the media is totally unbiased and telling the truth. So they’re no longer corporate owned and operated. Oh wait, they are. But that’s okay. As long as they support Obama.

Comment by candymarl | 2008-06-25 20:54:01

Where’s Zogby? I’ve received several Zogby polls over the last few weeks. There has been no mention of the outcomes in the media.

Funny that. When the Zogby polls were trending for Obama during the primaries they put them out on a regular basis. They were wrong on several state outcomes but they were published.

Comment by Dan R. | 2008-06-25 20:54:02

The Gallup and Rasmussen daily and weekly tracking polls are the most accurate, and unlike polls sponsored by news organizations like the LA Times and Newsweek, they don’t have an agenda to promote. I think that Obama has a lead right now, but it’s a pretty narrow one, somewhere around 3-4 points nationally.

Also, when you consider that there are probably a lot of consarvative and moderate white Dmocrats out there who are telling the pollsters that they prefer Obama but who will really vote for McCain when the curtain to the voting booth closes, this race could very well be dead even right now.

But what McCain needs to do is get voters to pay attention to Obama’s specific economic proposals. They are truly frightening. The word “socialistic” is a very accurate description. They would stifle economic growth big-time.

Comment by Patrick Walker | 2008-06-26 09:05:40

There is nothing wrong with “socialism”. The scary part is that Pelosi and Reid would have to implement any Obama policy.

That’s the scary part.

Comment by Patrick Walker | 2008-06-26 09:07:20

I should have added that if Obama was the big, bad, scary socialist, he wouldn’t be kowtowing to Wall Street nor would he be pushing a Republican Lite health care solution.

Obama isn’t a socialist. He’s a fraud.

Comment by Hope Floats | 2008-06-26 13:47:42

He’s a corporatist fascist like the old nazis in WWII. “Nationalized socialism” for his corporate friends.

It doesn’t matter.
The Newsweek poll was bias for Obama.
Newsweek(a.k.a, the Washingtonpost and NBC)
want Obama to be the President.
Reality is, Obama is a weak GE candidate.
Gallup/Ras/SurveyUSA are far more accurate than NewsWEAK.

Yeah – why worry about the empty hole where Obama’s character used to be when you can sit on your butts watching Obama’s Greatest Flip-Flops on Youtube, fantasizing about Saint Obama’s Glorious Capitulation on FISA, playing with your teeny weeny polls?

The sad thing is, if Obama wins, you’d still have nothing but an Eddie Haskell in the Oval Office.

The MSM keep citing the Newsweek poll — Obama ahead 15 points — it is maddening — When I watch TV, which is not too often anymore — I truly feel like I live in a parallel universe. They want him to win sooo badly and it is sooo obvious. As far as I am concerned, we have already lost our democracy and it is the fault of the media.

Comment by NoMcCain | 2008-06-26 13:13:41

Nice job citing the handful of polls where McCain isn’t getting crushed, including state polls.

New polls from Quinnipiac University, The Washington Post and The Wall St. Journal.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/politics/interactives/campaign08/battleground-polls/index.html

Colorado (1351 LVs, June 17-24, MOE +/- 2.7%)

Obama 49
McCain 44

Michigan (1411 LVs, June 17-24, MOE +/- 2.6%)

Obama 48
McCain 42

Minnesota (1572 LVs, June 17-24, MOE +/- 2.5%)

Obama 54
McCain 37

Wisconsin (1537 LVs, June 17-24, MOE +/- 2.5%)

Obama 52
McCain 39

I’ll wait to hear you guys tell me how these polls are flawed because McCain is losing. Of course, we all know the WSJ is TOTALLY in the tank for Obama LOL

Here’s where Electoral-Vote.com projects the election, based on an average of all the state polls:

Obama 317 McCain 194 Ties 27

Here’s where RealClearPolitics projects things:

Barack Obama 317 John McCain 221

Yep, that McCain landslide sure looks likely! The fact that you can only cite ONE state poll where McCain is ahead in an unexpected state shows how sad his campaign has become.

Comment by Hope Floats | 2008-06-26 14:05:32

RCP has Obama at 238, McCain at 163 and 137 toss up states. The “toss up states” include AK, TX, LA, GA, NC, VA, MS, FL, MI, OH, IN, NH, MO, CO, NM, NV and MT.

I’m gonna take a wild guess that in a few months those states will be as red as they’ve been for the past 40 years. Obama says he can win without FL and OH anyway, and MI voters don’t count.

Comment by Hope Floats | 2008-06-26 14:12:24

Just want to add that you included, for example, NC where McCain leads 46.0 to 41.8 right now. In MO, the latest SUSA poll has McCain ahead by 7 pts. The latest Rasmussen poll has McCain ahead in FL by 8 pts. What I like about the RCP electoral map is you can update it according to the latest polls.
