“White Guilt” Politics of Obama Crowd Undermined

If you believe the rhetoric of the “social justice” crowd influencing the Obama camp’s approach to education policy – the authoritarian leftists Bill Ayers and his sidekick Mike Klonsky as well ed school professors like Linda Darling-Hammond
This crowd supports a new idea – arguing that it is time to replace the attack on the “achievement gap” between minority and white/Asian students with a new concept called “educational debt” that has allegedly piled up over centuries in U.S. history.
Lying behind this argument is a pernicious concept – that white workers benefit at the expense of black workers and that more widely American workers live off the backs of workers in the third world. This is at the heart of the authoritarian and anti-union politics of the Ayers/Klonsky crowd.
Of course, such a conclusion would come as a shock to the millions of white workers in this country who earn essentially the same income as most black workers (though, of course, there are far more whites than blacks who earn significantly more). And it would also come as a shock to those American workers, white and black, whose jobs have been shipped off to China or Mexico.
Despite the absurdity of these views, it is this idea of “unequal exchange” between north and south, or inside the U.S. between black and white, that explains a good deal about the politics of those in this crowd who cozy up to demagogues like Venezuela strongman Hugo Chavez or, for that matter, Louis Farrakhan. The authoritarian leftist camp convinces itself that “the enemy of my enemy is my friend.”
The Chinese were the originators of the idea that the rural third world south was being exploited by the urban developed world north. Klonsky fondly reminisced about his authoritarian left activities here in November 2007 stopping only to “repent” for his sectarianism while celebrating that he is now back together with former SDS comrades in “one movement.” Now Klonsky blogs for the Obama campaign website on education policy and “social justice teaching.”
Ayers helped tear apart SDS to form the Weather Underground with his future wife, Bernardine Dohrn, arguing that carrying out armed robberies and bombings “in solidarity” with black revolutionaries was the number one priority for student anti-war activists. Now he peddles “white supremacy” and other ideas in his peculiar so-called “social justice” approach to educational policy.
But this world view took a huge hit this week with the release of new research on what is actually happening in U.S. schools. In light of the new results is it possible the social justice education crowd knew they would need a new idea to keep their hopes of influencing the national policy debate alive? Is that what explains the campaign over the last two years or so by this milieu to push the educational debt/reparations idea?
The new research by the non-partisan Center on Education Policy (CEP) indicates that over the last five years, since the passage of No Child Left Behind in 2002, there has been measurable improvement in test scores for millions of students including a narrowing of the “achievement gap” between whites and non-whites (leaving out Asians, of course, who, despite racist “oppression” somehow escape the effect of that alleged oppression when they show up for school – when it comes to Asians, it’s whites who are falling behind, though not presumably because of the oppression of whites by Asians).
The results may only be coincidental, of course, but the CEP report is pretty convincing that real improvement can occur in closing the achievement gap between white and minority kids without also atoning for every sin (and those were and are real enough) ever committed against non-whites, as the “social justice” crowd insists.
The CEP Press Release concludes:
Student scores on state tests of reading and mathematics have risen since 2002, and achievement gaps between various groups of students have narrowed more often than they have widened, according to the most comprehensive and rigorous recent analysis of state test scores.
With respect specifically to the achievement gap between whites and non-whites and higher income and lower income students, the CEP’s Executive Summary states:
In states with sufficient data to determine achievement gap trends on state tests, gaps have narrowed more often than they have widened since 2002, particularly for African American students and low-income students. Gap trends were also largely positive for Latino students, but this finding is less conclusive because in many states the Latino subgroup has changed significantly in size in recent years.On thewhole, percentages proficient and effect sizes revealed similar trends of narrowing or widening, although percentages proficient gave a more positive picture of achievement gap trends than effect sizes.
Here is how they summarize the results in California:
Overall achievement
• From 2003 to 2007 in reading, students made moderate-to-large gains in both percentages proficient and effect sizes at the elementary and middle school grades analyzed. At the high school level, the percentage proficient declined slightly and effect size showed no change.
• In math, achievement on both indicators increased at a moderate-to-large rate at the elementary and high school levels. At the middle school grade analyzed, percentages proficient declined slightly but effect sizes increased at a moderate-to-large rate.
• From 2003 to 2007, the African American-white gap at the elementary level showed no change in reading but narrowed in math, according to both indicators. At the middle school grade analyzed, trends varied by subject and indicator. At the high school level, gaps in percentages proficient narrowed in reading and math; no effect size data were available for subgroups at this level.
• Gaps between Latino and white students narrowed in both reading and math at the elementary level, according to both indicators. Gaps widened at the middle school level in reading on both indicators. At the high school level, gaps stayed the same in reading and narrowed in math, according to the percentage proficient.
• In reading, gaps between Native American and white students narrowed according to percentages proficient but widened according to effect sizes. In math, this gap narrowed at the elementary level on both indicators. Middle school trends varied by indicator. At the high school level, percentage proficient gaps narrowed in both reading and math.
• Gaps between low-income students and all students stayed the same in elementary reading and narrowed in elementary math, according to both indicators. At the middle school level, reading gaps showed no net change on either indicator. At the high school level, gaps in the percentage proficient narrowed in both reading and math.
Clearly still a long way to go but the improvement for younger kids is particularly heartening. The pro-NCLB crowd, shrinking day by day, will not take much comfort from the report which is unable to conclude that NCLB caused the improvements. But the testing regime now in place across the country at least lets us assess change over time.
And these results certainly suggest that any proposal for putting “repayment of 400 years of educational debt owed to people of color” at the top of a President Obama administration, as Ayers, Ladson-Billings, and Darling-Hammond argue should be the case, is likely wrong-headed.

As a matter of fact, Uppity, a revered democrat, Andrew Jackson, was the one who instigated, no demanded, the Indian Removal Act, which resulted in the Trail of Tears. This after they were responsible for the American victory over the Brits in New Orleans. Jackson gave them promises of their ancestral tribal lands, which he then reneged on. This is the uglier history of the Democratic Party. Why they would still honor him as founder of the dems by the various Jefferson/Jackson dinners is beyond me. Native Americans still get the short end of the stick especially in the Northern states. To this day many NAs will not use a $20 bill. Indian casinos and Oklahoma Indian oil fields I consider well earned revenge against the white man. The Federal Gov owes the Native American tribes in the Dakotas millions of dollars and it has been tied up in court for years. The one sympathic judge who was requiring the gov to be fair was removed as being non-objective. What a joke. I found it interesting that most Native American tribes were for Hillary. They obviously did not see anything enlightening about Obama.
You know what really endears me about the Native Americans? They don’t WHINE. They REALLY got the shaft and they don’t WHINE. They SHOULD whine, but they don’t!
In some counties in the NE, the Native American businesses are the only things holding the economy together! And what does our government want to do? Tax their asses so that they fail too! If you ask me, we could LEARN something from the Native American businesses that are successful. Namely, that when government stays the hell out of your way, you can succeed! well uppity, i see that you are at it once again. you still have not done your homework regarding monies belonging to Native Americans and stolen – mostly by white administrators at the dept. of interior. is there something wrong with you? i am for reparations for the damage done to my people thro the institution of slavery, and the incredible racism practiced by the country, “my” country, for more than a hundred years after the emancipation. do you not study history at all? i mean most of it is written from a white slant anyway, but you can still study the history or your own country thro other written source material. since you seem not to done any research whatsoever let me tell you it. this country long ago settled monies on the Native tribes of this country, once they were nearly decimated and wiped out. These monies were then largely withheld from the tribes down thro the years, some of it stolen, and much of it unclaimed because the inheritors have died. The slave trade in Africa had been in practice for hundreds of years before the Europeans entered the trade. Kingdoms in Central and West Africa had been trading slaves with the Moslems for centuries. As demand increased middlemen from coastal Africa began going into the interior to round up peoples to sell. So perhaps you can go to Mali, Ghana, Benin, Togo, etc and ask for reparations from them for selling slaves in the first place. And while you are at it check out the fact that slavery still exists in the world. But I don’t hear too many people screaming about it. Am I trying to justify the practice of slavery, a resounding NO. Am I saying that racism did not or does not now exist, a resounding NO. But are a whole people supposed to continue to use that as an excuse for their current lot in life? When I lived in a low income apartment complex I had several African American families as neighbors. I was working 3 jobs to support my son and try to put myself through school. Some of my neighbors sat on the stoop and would joke that I worked too hard. Another neighbor had a teenage son who regularly asked me to check his homework because he wanted it to be correct. I happily did so (not that I was such a brainiac). He would come home from school, change and then go out and hustle for jobs. Shovel snow in the winter, mow lawns in the summer, anything. He graduated with As and Bs, got a scholarship and financial aid and went to college. He wanted to be a teacher. I lived there from the time he was in 8th grade to his sophmore yr in college. and in all those years the other neighbors were still sitting on the stoop asking why work so hard. The point is that it is not someone else that holds a person back, most of the time it is the person themselves.

I actually prefer black american as opposed to african, which i know nothing about, and never have, ie living there or even being born there. this is my home and my birth place. i am black american. it’s my preference. look at what uppity says; to paraphrase; native americans have gotten over what whites did to them why don’t blacks do the same? stop their whining and get on with life. basically my own message is that racism in america is alive and kicking in this country, and it is a problem. i believe that the vast majority of americans, liberals and conservatives now believe that with the work of dr. king dying with him, blacks had all they needed and all they were going to get, and that was all there was to it. one hundred years of intense racism should now be forgotten and set aside, all the discrimination has been conqueresd, and now blacks should just forget all that had gone on before and move on with their lives. easier said than done. housing discrimination, job, education, all still exist in this country. i know, i’ve been there, and in recent times. if i’m getting the message from karenann and uppity that blacks are a lazy, whining lot who don’t want to go out and work, then how many more whites feel this way? if that isn’t the message in there then i’m seeing it wrong, but i don’t believe i am. this blinds whites to the fact that there is still much to be done in this country, it blinds them to the fact that there is still racism, and it is what keeps us from ever furthering race relations. am i saying that whites should feel guilty for what’s happening? no. actually whites don’t have to do a thing at all. but if you don’t then you will wake up to a world that almost looks like other third world countries, and you will be dragged down right along with us too. unless of course you can afford to live in a gated community. but hey, you don’t have to do a darned thing as far as i’m concerned. and believe me, i know you won’t.

If someone gives you a break you use it to better yourself. You don’t just take it, do nothing with it, then come back and ask for more.
Well, gentlerabbit, your work is not done. If you truly are who you say you are, then you must work to get your own to get off the welfare dime, quit making welfare an occupation, quit having welfare babies, quit selling drugs, quit buying useless bling and listening to music that glorifies killing and disrespecting women. You must tell them that black theology is a destructive force rather than a force for good.
When you, yourself, can become a force for good in these arenas, then you might have some credibility. Until then, you’re just another whiner.

At what once again? Using my first amendment rights that you and Comrade Obama would like to stifle? I earned what’s mine and it’s not yours.
Obama and Ayers teamed up to get the Chicago area Grant of about $100 million from the Annenberg Challenge, to improve education in their area. Education did not improve where they spent the money though, but it did win them friends and supporters from the folks getting the money.
“Social Justice” always seems to be a code word for giving money to “community groups” that will employ as leaders, with generous salaries, the people who espouse “Social Justice.”
This guilt tripping is so ridiculous! No one in the world has any choice as to their ethnic roots. It sounds like everyone wants to blame something on somebody and no one wants to live the life god gives us whatever it brings. Humanity has a long way to go before it ever finds perfection but money, reparations, guilt are not the answers.
Grow up Obama people. I don’t know what else to say.
We’re only responsible for Our own individual actions. We can learn from the actions of others and decide to not repeat those bad actions again but this blame mentality is foolish and regressive.

I agree. This birth certicate thing seems a little silly. I can see a smear of some kind on the posted document that looks like part of a stamp anyway.

The birth certificate is a national security issue IF OB was elected president. Someone out there has the true certificate and can use it against OB to get whatever they want.
I realize the impact of something proving that Obama is not a citizen and I certainly wouldn’t put it past him to manufacture a birth certificate.
But we have seen no real evidence that the one Obama posted is fake – only speculation.
At this point, we seem to be just rehashing the speculation.
Again, in the absence of any real evidence that the birth certificate is fake, we need to let it go and move on to more provable issues regarding the treachery of Obama – there’s certainly no shortage of them.
If grandma said get that kid home so we can claim he is an American citizen and then Vital Statistics office in HI office wouldn’t accept the form she filed. Then I can believe that they lied from the get go and continued to lie to this day.
I bet she was in route to HI when she turned up at Mercer Island with a new born baby, why else would she be there, was her bond to these people greater then her bond to the babies father or her parents? But maybe she was just en route from home for unwed mothers in Seattle. If he admitted he was born in Seattle everyone would ask: what was your mom doing in Seattle? Why did she go there to have a baby? The answer is she was an unwed mother. So at best we find out Obama is a bastard, but we already know that.
Why would it be easier to lie than apply for citizenship for him? What obstacles would Ann and her parents have to face if they did that? Are they daunting enough to cause them to just lie?

To say that “The “embossed seal” in question is, she said, probably on the back of the document provided to the Daily Kos, but not visible” is at best stupid and at worst intentional fraud. Anything embossed is a physical feature of the document in question, in effect a deformation of the paper itself. Anything visible on one side of a document but not on the other is, by definition, not embossed.

An authentic Hawaiian birth certificate for another Hawaiian individual has since surfaced which, using the same official form as the presumptive Obama certificate, includes an embossed official seal and an authoritative signature, coming through from the back. I think our federal laws have some provisions in there about discriminating against people because of race, religion, national origin. First thing they would need to do is repeal those laws. And then they could go from there.

You can bet that some, if not many, teachers are weighting instruction toward the taking of the NCLB testing. There’s bound to be immense pressure from school supers and principals, and in some instances teachers’ salaries or very employment may be affected by the students’ performances. For over half a century now, education theorists have been redoing tests and advocating the throwing of more and more money at the problem of underachieving students. The only solution is to face the fact that some children are not bright enough to excel. But because this will involve the ghettoes and barrios, too many educators are afraid to even broach the subject. And thus the problem will continue.

Informed discussion is powerful, however, as angry as I am and I see others are, going off the deep end with speculation is just confirming what the Obamoids and the press are now saying about our discontent.
There is enough damning evidence on his actions and words, we don’t have to presume or speculate and talk nonsense when all it does is fan the fires of the deranged and then these blogs become a sad reflection of the opposition. Pretending to be “mainstream,” for political expediency and throwing them all under the bus to save his craven and nefarious soul. In other words even selling their legitimacy under our Constitution to speak their minds (no matter how objectionable to us) and appear as if their views are not his “anymore” is the manipulation of a fascist. At any cost he will subvert the truth for his own political power.

Again Professor, thank-you for this very informative article. Nobama’s world view of “social justice” (influenced by all his radical associations) has infiltrated all his positions on every issue important to American life. I am also morally repelled by “the end justify the means” strategy used by him and his followers to advance their causes.
I am embarressed to say at first I did not connect his use of rhetoric to his agenda. His use of phrases sounded reasonable, admirable even(!)UNTIL I heard him speak on faith. Red flags went up fast when he renamed the “Gospel of Life” to the Social Gospel or the “Gospel of Justice”. Wording that sounds pleasing and acceptable, but in reality represent a radical shift in theology.

The following shows that the Delaware matter is nothing more than a vindictive attack by the Obama Camp those in powerful places who support Barack Obama’s dirty Chicago Style Politics.
On June 16 and 17, 2008 two letters from the Social Security Administration were mailed to my Duluth home stating that my disability and medical benefits had been terminated for the following reasons:

3. The information contained in this letter does not match the case number indicated on the court documents dated June 23, 2008 from the “alleged” warrant used to arrest me by DC Metro Police on June 18, 2008.
I am not on any probation or any parole from any State or Jurisdiction of any kind nor have I been since my Colorado Parole was discharged on May 5, 2000.
It is just amazing how I am being targeted with non-stop manufactured warrants and charges which only surfaced after I began making public my claims against Barack Obama.
Even more interesting is Social Securities letter being dated the exact same dates that the DC Metro Police and the National Press Club security director begin organizing their plan to take me into custody on a non-existent “Fugitive from Justice” warrant.
THIS ACTION HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE COLORADO MATTER AS PER SSA OWN PROCEDURES. Even as you read this, the overwhelming majority of AA’s and “White intelectuals” will continue to believe it. Even as you know the truth, you will block the truth out of your mind, because you are bred to accept the racist presumption of color, and ethnic identity.
And so many of you reading this will create incredible mental gymnastics, telling yourself why the truth doesn’t matter. You will lie to yourself because you want to believe the lie, and then curse the American body politic for being built on lies.
White guilt has worked very well in the past. It worked for Al Sharpton; it worked for Jesse Jackson; it worked for Bill Ayers; and it worked for Father Pfleger. When something works, it is used. Reparations are very popular in the AA Community, even conservative AA believe in reparations. This is especially true after the compensation given to Japanese Americans, which was totally justified since they lost land they owned, they lost businesses (sucessful ones) that they started; and it was within the context of the last 50 years where those responsible were still alive to attest to the injustice.
Having said that, not all AA think alike. Voices have been heard regarding Obama and some of them are coming from his own Community.
The reason why AA have not succeeded like Asians is that (1) Even though there is no language barrier (like Hispanics) education is not valued in the home; (2) many underachieving AA students come from single parent homes with multiple children, multiple fathers and they are unstable; (3) these children tend to go to schools and live in communities where education is not valued; (4) the most interesting statistic about AA and education is that even when AA students have two parents who have college educations, go to good schools and live in upper middle class neighborhoods, their scores are still lower than others with similar backgrounds.
What all this means is that many have been pushed along and given inflated grades. Example: the NY Times the other day ran a story about the “gifted programs” in NYC. Minorities were in the lower percentile of their schools compared to others and they were still placed in gifted programs. It was so bad that the meaning of the word “gifted” was lost on trying to get racial balance.
When you are irresponible in your life choices, there is only person to blame, yourself. Not the country, not racism, not anyone else. When your parent or parents do not accept responsiblity and instead of backing teachers when their children have problems in school, they back the student and blame the teacher. This sets up a life situation where all authority is to be questioned and they are victims. Victimhood has been an established hallmark of why AA students have not succeeded. Shelby Steele and other educational leaders, I include Bill Cosby in this (who has been villified by the AA Community for speaking the truth), know this is the problem.
So, when you are a victim and everything can be blamed on racism, like every criticism of Obama has been labelled, you have a person who has a sense of arrogant entitlement. And this is Obama’s problem. Those who see it, know it. His followers don’t see it, so it is only logical that they believe everything he says.
You add Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson to this group of racial whores, and you have a real set up for the White House to be turned into “Give A Way Central” where people think they should receive a house, a car, a job, an education, etc., without having to do anything for it. That is why Clinton backed welfare reform. And you can bet as soon as Obama would become POTUS, he would roll that back. When you feel entitled, you feel ripped off when something is taken away.
So, these racial overtones and white guilt (Robert Byrd is an example, former member of the KKK who endorsed Obama) works and it has worked. But there are many AA, I named a few above, who don’t believe this and many others, including most Asians, who also overcome language barriers, don’t either.
Those of us who supported Hillary Clinton don’t believe it either.

In an 1856 letter to his wife Mary Custis Lee, Robert E. Lee called slavery “a moral and political evil.” Yet he concluded that black slaves were immeasurably better off here than in Africa, morally, socially and physically.
The fact is large numbers of free Negroes owned black slaves; in fact, in numbers disproportionate to their representation in society at large. In 1860 only a small minority of whites owned slaves. According to the U.S. census report for that last year before the Civil War, there were nearly 27 million whites in the country. Some eight million of them lived in the slave holding states.
The census also determined that there were fewer than 385,000 individuals who owned slaves (1). Even if all slaveholders had been white, that would amount to only 1.4 percent of whites in the country (or 4.8 percent of southern whites owning one or more slaves).
In the rare instances when the ownership of slaves by free Negroes is acknowledged in the history books, justification centers on the claim that black slave masters were simply individuals who purchased the freedom of a spouse or child from a white slaveholder and had been unable to legally manumit them. Although this did indeed happen at times, it is a misrepresentation of the majority of instances, one which is debunked by records of the period on blacks who owned slaves. These include individuals such as Justus Angel and Mistress L. Horry, of Colleton District, South Carolina, who each owned 84 slaves in 1830. In fact, in 1830 a fourth of the free Negro slave masters in South Carolina owned 10 or more slaves; eight owning 30 or more (2).
According to federal census reports, on June 1, 1860 there were nearly 4.5 million Negroes in the United States, with fewer than four million of them living in the southern slaveholding states. Of the blacks residing in the South, 261,988 were not slaves. Of this number, 10,689 lived in New Orleans. The country’s leading African American historian, Duke University professor John Hope Franklin, records that in New Orleans over 3,000 free Negroes owned slaves, or 28 percent of the free Negroes in that city.
To return to the census figures quoted above, this 28 percent is certainly impressive when compared to less than 1.4 percent of all American whites and less than 4.8 percent of southern whites. The statistics show that, when free, blacks disproportionately became slave masters.
The majority of slaveholders, white and black, owned only one to five slaves. More often than not, and contrary to a century and a half of bullwhips-on-tortured-backs propaganda, black and white masters worked and ate alongside their charges; be it in house, field or workshop. The few individuals who owned 50 or more slaves were confined to the top one percent, and have been defined as slave magnates.
In 1860 there were at least six Negroes in Louisiana who owned 65 or more slaves The largest number, 152 slaves, were owned by the widow C. Richards and her son P.C. Richards, who owned a large sugar cane plantation. Another Negro slave magnate in Louisiana, with over 100 slaves, was Antoine Dubuclet, a sugar planter whose estate was valued at (in 1860 dollars) $264,000 (3). That year, the mean wealth of southern white men was $3,978 (4).
In Charleston, South Carolina in 1860 125 free Negroes owned slaves; six of them owning 10 or more. Of the $1.5 million in taxable property owned by free Negroes in Charleston, more than $300,000 represented slave holdings (5). In North Carolina 69 free Negroes were slave owners (6).
In 1860 William Ellison was South Carolina’s largest Negro slaveowner. In Black Masters. A Free Family of Color in the Old South, authors Michael P. Johnson and James L. Roak write a sympathetic account of Ellison’s life. From Ellison’s birth as a slave to his death at 71, the authors attempt to provide justification, based on their own speculation, as to why a former slave would become a magnate slave master.
At birth he was given the name April. A common practice among slaves of the period was to name a child after the day or month of his or her birth. Between 1800 and 1802 April was purchased by a white slave-owner named William Ellison. Apprenticed at 12, he was taught the trades of carpentry, blacksmithing and machining, as well as how to read, write, cipher and do basic bookkeeping.
On June 8, 1816, William Ellison appeared before a magistrate (with five local freeholders as supporting witnesses) to gain permission to free April, now 26 years of age. In 1800 the South Carolina legislature had set out in detail the procedures for manumission. To end the practice of freeing unruly slaves of “bad or depraved” character and those who “from age or infirmity” were incapacitated, the state required that an owner testify under oath to the good character of the slave he sought to free. Also required was evidence of the slave’s “ability to gain a livelihood in an honest way.”
Although lawmakers of the time could not envision the incredibly vast public welfare structures of a later age, these stipulations became law in order to prevent slaveholders from freeing individuals who would become a burden on the general public.
Interestingly, considering today’s accounts of life under slavery, authors Johnson and Roak report instances where free Negroes petitioned to be allowed to become slaves; this because they were unable to support themselves.
Black Confederates and Afro-Yankees in Civil War Virginia (University Press of Virginia-1995) was written by Ervin L. Jordan Jr., an African-American and assistant professor and associate curator of the Special Collections Department, University of Virginia library. He wrote: “One of the more curious aspects of the free black existence in Virginia was their ownership of slaves. Black slave masters owned members of their family and freed them in their wills. Free blacks were encouraged to sell themselves into slavery and had the right to choose their owner through a lengthy court procedure.”
In 1816, shortly after his manumission, April moved to Stateburg. Initially he hired slave workers from local owners. When in 1817 he built a gin for Judge Thomas Watries, he credited the judge nine dollars “for hire of carpenter George for 12 days.” By 1820 he had purchased two adult males to work in his shop (7). In fewer than four years after being freed, April demonstrated that he had no problem perpetuating an institution he had been released from. He also achieved greater monetary success than most white people of the period.
On June 20, 1820, April appeared in the Sumter District courthouse in Sumterville. Described in court papers submitted by his attorney as a “freed yellow man of about 29 years of age,” he requested a name change because it “would yet greatly advance his interest as a tradesman.” A new name would also “save him and his children from degradation and contempt which the minds of some do and will attach to the name April.” Because “of the kindness” of his former master and as a “Mark of gratitude and respect for him” April asked that his name be changed to William Ellison. His request was granted.
In time the black Ellison family joined the predominantly white Episcopalian church. On August 6, 1824 he was allowed to put a family bench on the first floor, among those of the wealthy white families. Other blacks, free and slave, and poor whites sat in the balcony. Another wealthy Negro family would later join the first floor worshippers.
Between 1822 and the mid-1840s, Ellison gradually built a small empire, acquiring slaves in increasing numbers. He became one of South Carolina’s major cotton gin manufacturers, selling his machines as far away as Mississippi. From February 1817 until the War Between the States commenced, his business advertisements appeared regularly in newspapers across the state. These included the Camden Gazette, the Sumter Southern Whig and the Black River Watchman.
Ellison was so successful, due to his utilization of cheap slave labor, that many white competitors went out of business. Such situations discredit impressions that whites dealt only with other whites. Where money was involved, it was apparent that neither Ellison’s race or former status were considerations.
In his book, Ervin L. Jordan Jr. writes that, as the great conflagration of 1861-1865 approached: “Free Afro-Virginians were a nascent black middle class under siege, but several acquired property before and during the war. Approximately 169 free blacks owned 145,976 acres in the counties of Amelia, Amherst, Isle of Wight, Nansemond, Prince William and Surry, averaging 870 acres each. Twenty-rune Petersburg blacks each owned property worth $1,000 and continued to purchase more despite the war.”
Jordan offers an example: “Gilbert Hunt, a Richmond ex-slave blacksmith, owned two slaves, a house valued at $1,376, and $500 in other properties at his death in 1863.” Jordan wrote that “some free black residents of Hampton and Norfolk owned property of considerable value; 17 black Hamptonians possessed property worth a total of $15,000. Thirty-six black men paid taxes as heads of families in Elizabeth City County and were employed as blacksmiths, bricklayers, fishermen, oystermen and day laborers. In three Norfolk County parishes 160 blacks owned a total of $41,158 in real estate and personal property.
The general practice of the period was that plantation owners would buy seed and equipment on credit and settle their outstanding accounts when the annual cotton crop was sold. Ellison, like all free Negroes, could resort to the courts for enforcement of the terms of contract agreements. Several times Ellison successfully sued white men for money owed him.
In 1838 Ellison purchased on time 54.5 acres adjoining his original acreage from one Stephen D. Miller. He moved into a large home on the property. What made the acquisition notable was that Miller had served in the South Carolina legislature, both in the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate, and while a resident of Stateburg had been governor of the state. Ellison’s next door neighbor was Dr. W.W. Anderson, master of “Borough House, a magnificent 18th Century mansion. Anderson’s son would win fame in the War Between the States as General “Fighting Dick” Anderson.
By 1847 Ellison owned over 350 acres, and more than 900 by 1860. He raised mostly cotton, with a small acreage set aside for cultivating foodstuffs to feed his family and slaves. In 1840 he owned 30 slaves, and by 1860 he owned 63. His sons, who lived in homes on the property, owned an additional nine slaves. They were trained as gin makers by their father (8). They had spent time in Canada, where many wealthy American Negroes of the period sent their children for advanced formal education. Ellison’s sons and daughters married mulattos from Charleston, bringing them to the Ellison plantation to live.
In 1860 Ellison greatly underestimated his worth to tax assessors at $65,000. Even using this falsely stated figure, this man who had been a slave 44 years earlier had achieved great financial success. His wealth outdistanced 90 percent of his white neighbors in Sumter District. In the entire state, only five percent owned as much real estate as Ellison. His wealth was 15 times greater than that of the state’s average for whites. And Ellison owned more slaves than 99 percent of the South’s slaveholders.
Although a successful businessman and cotton farmer, Ellison’s major source of income derived from being a “slave breeder.” Slave breeding was looked upon with disgust throughout the South, and the laws of most southern states forbade the sale of slaves under the age of 12. In several states it was illegal to sell inherited slaves (9). Nevertheless, in 1840 Ellison secretly began slave breeding.
While there was subsequent investment return in raising and keeping young males, females were not productive workers in his factory or his cotton fields. As a result, except for a few females he raised to become “breeders,” Ellison sold the female and many of the male children born to his female slaves at an average price of $400. Ellison had a reputation as a harsh master. His slaves were said to be the district’s worst fed and clothed. On his property was located a small, windowless building where he would chain his problem slaves.
As with the slaves of his white counterparts, occasionally Ellison’s slaves ran away. The historians of Sumter District reported that from time to time Ellison advertised for the return of his runaways. On at least one occasion Ellison hired the services of a slave catcher. According to an account by Robert N. Andrews, a white man who had purchased a small hotel in Stateburg in the 1820s, Ellison hired him to run down “a valuable slave. Andrews caught the slave in Belleville, Virginia. He stated: “I was paid on returning home $77.50 and $74 for expenses.
William Ellison died December 5, 1861. His will stated that his estate should pass into the joint hands of his free daughter and his two surviving sons. He bequeathed $500 to the slave daughter he had sold.
Following in their father’s footsteps, the Ellison family actively supported the Confederacy throughout the war. They converted nearly their entire plantation to the production of corn, fodder, bacon, corn shucks and cotton for the Confederate armies. They paid $5,000 in taxes during the war. They also invested more than $9,000 in Confederate bonds, treasury notes and certificates in addition to the Confederate currency they held. At the end, all this valuable paper became worthless.
The younger Ellisons contributed more than farm produce, labor and money to the Confederate cause. On March 27, 1863 John Wilson Buckner, William Ellison’s oldest grandson, enlisted in the 1st South Carolina Artillery. Buckner served in the company of Captains P.P. Galliard and A.H. Boykin, local white men who knew that Buckner was a Negro. Although it was illegal at the time for a Negro to formally join the Confederate forces, the Ellison family’s prestige nullified the law in the minds of Buckner’s comrades. Buckner was wounded in action on July 12, 1863. At his funeral in Stateburg in August, 1895 he was praised by his former Confederate officers as being a “faithful soldier.”
Following the war the Ellison family fortune quickly dwindled. But many former Negro slave magnates quickly took advantage of circumstances and benefited by virtue of their race. For example Antoine Dubuclet, the previously mentioned New Orleans plantation owner who held more than 100 slaves, became Louisiana state treasurer during Reconstruction, a post he held from 1868 to 1877 (10).
A truer picture of the Old South, one never presented by the nation’s mind molders, emerges from this account. The American South had been undergoing structural evolutionary changes far, far greater than generations of Americans have been led to believe. In time, within a relatively short time, the obsolete and economically nonviable institution of slavery would have disappeared. The nation would have been spared awesome traumas from which it would never fully recover.
