Obama’s Out of Touch Economics: $115.62 for Soup and Sandwich

The Obama campaign managed to offend a newspaper in one of those “swing states” they believe they will win with an invoice that charged exorbitant fees for services not even utilized.  According to Bob Zaltsberg of the Herald Times of Bloomington, Indiana, their company is not pleased with the bill they received from the Obama campaign last week.  I quote:

The details of the invoice were surprising, however.

Meals: $115.62.

Bus: $226.17.

Supplies: $5.54.

Files: $91.41.

Invoice total: $438.74.

The bus fare seems fair, with Boyd taking up a seat that could have been occupied all day through the cross-state swing.

The supply charge was for water, soda, fresh fruit, and snacks on the two buses that transported the traveling press that day.

The files? That charge was for two things: Our share of accommodations for the working press at the Indianapolis North Hilton the morning of April 11, including labor, room rental, power strips, extension cords and an Internet access point; and our share of a $1,000-a-day fee (and $99 for a hotel room) for the campaign’s traveling Internet provider to have a technician travel with the press to help them with technology.

In regard to meals: Boyd essentially was billed $115.62 for a cup of soup and a turkey sandwich, because the campaign bills only for the day — not a la carte. He wasn’t in Indianapolis for the full breakfast buffet, or in Terre Haute for the dinner options that included grilled salmon, baked chicken with honey glaze, beef, steamed vegetables, Greek salad, oven roasted potato, rolls and butter, water, soft drinks and coffee.

What is their response to this bill?  They issue a stern warning to the Obama campaign.  I quote:

This was a rare primary, and thus a rare opportunity for an H-T reporter to travel with a campaign, even for such a short distance. Now, the Obama campaign is calling Indiana a “battleground state,” which means chances to travel with candidates may arise later this year.

If they do, we’ll probably skip the all-inclusive bus package and drive along behind.

$115.62 may purchase a soup and sandwich with the elite Obama campaign, but it will also guarantee negative press in a state Obama believes he can win.  $115.62: for some it is “change we can believe in,” while for others it is a sign that the woefully out of touch Obama campaign does not understand how to relate to small town newspapers.

$400 to enjoy the privilege of traveling with Obama?  ”No thanks” is the answer of the Bloomington Herald Times.

this is too funny…

Obama continues to offend americans all across the country…

every day there are several fiascos…

some more grave than $100.00 for a sandwich… but they all reflect one thing consistantly…

Obama is out of touch, arrogant, corrupt, incompetent and a liar…

how long will this insult continue?

for me the final straw was the fake presidential seal… and his weaseling explanations that it was only for a 1 time event… oh yes, he just wanted to offend the democratic governers he was meeting with that day and all americans… for just one day…. yeah right…\

what a slimeball…

glad to see the above mentioned newspaper is waking up to the real Obama…

Comment by IndayHill | 2008-06-27 16:50:05

He is worst than GWB.
Obama is already “on your face attitude” even BEFORE he is in the White House! (God forbids!)
That shows his competence & belief TO HIMSELF! HE BELIEVES HE CAN FOOL US !!
Then he & his corrupt advisers will continue their jolly, corrupt tinkering of the Constitution & tossing of the fooled voters under the bus!
Red flags are every where & the media ignores the warning.
America, please, wake-up, before it is too late!
God save America!
Hillary or McCain ‘08

Obama = GWB

Both are out of touch with the vast majority of Americans.

Obama went to a private high school in Hawaii and he had little of any contact with the Native Hawaiians. In fact I know kids who managed to go the whole private school route and never learned to speak pidgin English — which is really the way a huge segment of the population communicate in Hawaii — you don’t know da kine — forget it.

He reminds me of papa Bush not knowing what the scanners were in Supermarkets and the ignorance GWB.

Clinton or McCain — there’s no other choice FOR America.

to be fair, Bush Sr was misquoted.

Get a grip, NH, Obama’s coming
By JOSEPH W. MCQUAID
New Hampshire Union Leader Publisher

NEW HAMPSHIRE RESIDENTS, grab something sturdy today. Barack Obama is coming and his ability to switch positions on major issues is dizzying. It wouldn’t matter, except Obama wants to become President. If that happens, hold on for dear life.

This is the man who eloquently declined to disassociate himself from his hate-filled friend and pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright. His “incendiary” remarks were taken out of context, Obama said. He was like family, like a grandma.

But Obama cooly threw “grandma” under the bus when it became politically advantageous.

OBarky thinks he can win Indiana.
Further proof that he is delusional.
Indiana hasn’t gone Democratic in a general election since LBJ.
There aren’t enough dead people in Lake County or enough Joe-Andrews-controlled Diebold voting machines to give OBarky a win in the Hoosier state.

Comment by Gary McGowan | 2008-06-27 10:40:31

I live on the other side of the planet, but I too enjoyed the Hearld Times’ piece above. Until the part about Iran being inches away from having a nuke. That’s BS. I would suppose the writer is in the neocon faction of the Republican Party gathering votes for McCain. (I’m all for PUMA and see Obama as 150% bad, McCain as 85% bad.)

I seem to remember GWB having promised to take care of the so-called Iran problem before he leaves office, and they are sure working on it. I think the next ploy is to try provoking Iran with energy-related sanctions (Iran has lots of unrefined petroleum, but is dependent on imports to actually make stuff run.) Good bet would be for some Brit ships to be part of something in the area… they are the ones actually stirring up this shit. They have been the chess players/manipulators in that area since forever.

we all know hes just a loser user, guess the libs in congress are either stupid or are hoping he will lie good enough to tax americans so they can do more bailouts and earmarks..and further drive this country into the ground, while pointing the fingers to bush…

Comment by glennmcgahhee | 2008-06-27 06:03:19

While those reporters were there, did they bother to look under that bus. It would have een very informative. I can’t help but notice how all the media outlets run with the exact same headlines. They are all sheep regugitating the memos handed out by the campaign. Glad to see some original reporting. It may be a turning point as people are getting a closer look as Obama has to make some hard decisions in Congress. He can’t get away with voting “present”. The netroots that have been touting him are getting really disappointed.

I live in Fort Wayne Indiana and I can say for certainty that OBAMA WILL NOT WIN THIS STATE. Indiana has not went for a Democratic Presidential nominee since I think 1964. This is a conservative state and Ft Wayne is called the city of churches. He is an arrogant ass to think he will. Not going to happen.

Someone called me earlier this week doing an independent survey about who I was voting for. I said “I’ll tell you one thing, I am not voting for Barack Obama. I will either vote for McCain or not vote at all”.

After August, shit is going to start hitting the fan and it’s going to be flying straight at Obama. The problem with his young followers is they are arrogant too. They are all going to get a good knock down-just a matter of time.

Comment by Linda T | 2008-06-27 07:18:12

Did you read the Ft. Wayne papers after he won the primary there? They registered almost five thousand people to vote and used the kids at IPFW to also vote for him as they did at countless Universities.
I live in Ky and my son goes to school at IPFW and we were there the week-end after the primary and I read about the voter registration then. Hillary’s campaign only registered 49. They bussed kids to vote and put voting machines on campuses. The grown-ups are going to have to get off their duffs and get out and vote or we’re gonna get this clown.
They also are going into the prisons and jails and registering people. This is real folks.

Comment by College Educated for Hillary | 2008-06-27 08:31:30

I thought Hillary won Indiana by a few percentage points.

Comment by Jim S | 2008-06-27 09:38:03

Say what you will, I’m very worried that Obama will win the presidency. Large numbers of whites will vote for him to prove they’re not prejudiced, blacks will vote for him because of they’re prejudice, far left and others will vote for him because of a rabid hatred of Bush. I am voting for McCain because I am prejudiced, not about Obama’s color or lack thereof, but because I’m a moderate Independent that puts God and country first, issues second. It’s unfortunate that for this election cycle I will not be voting for the best person for the job, but for the person least likely to harm the country.

Typical ‘Obamabitch’ attitude: “-whatever our Precious one does is fine!”

Read the Greenwald piece too. Guess Glenn can expect retaliation from the egomaniacal Olbermann by being the “worst person in the world” sometime soon. Pointing out his lies is not permitted @MessNBC.

This just continues to show that Obama is an elitist. The DNC is going to continue hyping their ‘unity’ theme, trying to make anyone who doesn’t like their messiah out to be an odd ball and out of sync with the rest of the progressives in this country.

The reality will show in the final numbers.

Comment by A Random Idiot for Obama | 2008-06-27 09:08:28

Man, I love the absolute blatant distortion of the truth. The campaign didn’t charge them 115.62 for soup and a turnkey sandwich. They charged them $115.62 cents for three full, all you can eat meals that the newspaper didn’t, or wasn’t able to take advantage of. They admit themselves it is a flat, all day fee. A more mature and adult response, instead of whining and moaning like a petulant child and using it to craft a BS story out of thin air would have been to call the campaigns accounting people and explain what happened and as for a pro rated fee commensurate with what they actually partook of. This is kindergarten level behavior on the part of the paper, and just sad that people would think this is actually a story. Everyone needs to grow up and start acting more mature.

Comment by jangles | 2008-06-27 09:34:49

I can’t stand Obama but I agree with your point here. There is plenty of real things to argue but making something of this sandwich meal begs real dialogue. No one probably reads that paper anyway.

In April you all said he would never be the nominee – now he is !

You all are now saying he will never Unite the Democratic Party – now he and Hillary Clinton are on the move.

You all say Hillary will not be on his ticket as VP – I say just wait and see !!

You say he will never beat McCain – I say again let´s just wait and see !!

As we Italians say “I wish you all long lives, so you can all see us triumph [Obama President]“

Sammy
I do respect you voiceing your opinion but may I remind you the DNC has not taken place yet. O is the presumed candidate at this point in time. A lot can happen in the next couple of months.

“Things” are coming out of the shadows about mr. O, things he does not like. Every day we are learning more and more about him that that many Americans are questioning is he really fit to be the President of the United States.

As far as McCain, he is a big boy and can take care of himself..McCain survived capture during the Vietman War…The republican party is letting O dig himself into a hole and when he is deep enough I predict come fall they will fill that hole and bury him!!
