POLLS: Electability, “That Particular Questionnaire” & The DC Gun Ban
By Un coup de des on June 27, 2008 at 8:50 AM in Barack Obama, Charlie Gibson, Electability, Gun Control, John McCain
Does anyone remember “that particular questionnaire,” the 1996 questionnaire Charlie Gibson invoked during the ABC debate in Philadelphia, where he and Obama engaged in a lengthy and somewhat contentious exchange over 2nd Amendment rights?

According to a Gallup poll conducted in February 2008, 70% oppose the ban on handguns Barack Obama unequivocally supported in 1996 when he completed and personally amended in handwriting an IVI-IPO questionnaire before his first bid for the Illinois state Senate. Because that result is consistent with the 68% who voiced opposition to a handgun ban in a Gallup poll conducted in October 2007, one may assume Obama’s support for a complete ban on the “manufacture, sale and possession of handguns” will be explored by Republicans and by 2nd Amendment advocates during the general election cycle.
But this is only a scratch on the surface of Obama’s electability problems as a result of his controversial stances on 2nd Amendment rights.
Susan Hu already summarized Obama’s shifting stances on the DC Gun Ban:
- 20 NOV 2007: “Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama said that he ‘…believes that we can recognize and respect the rights of law-abiding gun owners and the right of local communities to enact common sense laws to combat violence and save lives. Obama believes the D.C. handgun law is constitutional.’”
- 11 FEB 2008: Obama support the D.C. handgun ban.
- 16 APR 2008: “At the Philadelphia debate, ABC News’ Charlie Gibson asked Obama whether the ban was constitutional. ’Well, Charlie, I confess I obviously haven’t listened to the briefs and looked at all the evidence,’ he said.”
- 26 JUN 2008: “‘That statement was obviously an inartful attempt to explain the Senator’s consistent position,’ Obama spokesman Bill Burton tells ABC News.’ The statement which Burton describes as an inaccurate representation of the senator’s views was made to the Chicago Tribune on Nov. 20, 2007.”
Obama, in other words, believed the DC gun ban was constitutional before he realized this stance was a political liability during the Pennsylvania primary in April.
Prevaricating and equivocating when asked about the constitutionality of the DC gun ban, the temporizing “constitutional law professor” cannot articulate an unambiguous position. The American people can, however. According to the Gallup poll conducted in February of this year, 73% of Americans believe the 2nd Amendment guarantees the rights of all Americans to possess guns.
Out of step, indeed out of touch, with 73% of the American people, Obama, the ostensible constitutional law professor, will have a difficult time justifying his radical stances during the general election cycle, especially as John McCain has been an advocate for overturning the DC for some time.
Be sure to thank Democratic superdelegates for television advertisements similar to the following during the months of August, September, October and November:

Barack Obama: the anti-Constitutional candidate.

The gun lobby will fundraise and help put Obama away with this issue. It appeals to swing voters - big time!

ust a word to all Obamabots.
We are the decider’s in this election.
We have always been the decider’s in General Elections.
Without us your candidate Doesn’t get hired!
FDR/Reagan/Clinton/McCain Democrats and moderates plus the Clinton wing of the party have made a decision on the resumes presented from the two parties.
The DNC employment agency presented us with two choices this year. One who was very qualified ready to lead to take on the other candidate. You withdrew her from consideration and presented us with an inexperienced Affirmative action candidate with an incomplete resume and questionable associations.
The other resume we have looked at is from a highly experienced war hero with superior past judgments on the grave and dire conditions facing this country. he would be ready to take the job offered from day one.
This year we have decided as the key voting block that decides this election that the democrat candidate doesn’t meet the min requirements for the job.
Please go back and tell your DNC employment office that they should have offered up the better candidate. maybe you should even fire them and start over.
Senator McCain…
You get the job!
Obama, in other words, believed the DC gun ban was constitutional before he realized this stance was a political liability during the Pennsylvania primary in April

Throwing loaded guns under a bus could be dangerous
You got that right, especially in the hands of some of the people in particular that are under that bus.
Let`s send him hunting with Dick Cheney.
LMFAO!
in a duck blind with a six shooter no less!! LMAO!!
GOAL & the NRA are going to ramp this up.
Even more dangerous to throw live ammo under that bus, especially if oprah’s ponderous bulk is on it
The Washington Post takes another shot at Obama for backtracking — this time on the town hall debate issue:
This makes O look weak and fearful.
LOOK? Apparently appearances don’t concern him or his campaign as he declined to debated HRC. He wants to control all opportunities to control “image,” though truth to tell he has little enough to protect at this point. The only thing he is willing to protect is Mrs. O.

Obama has his own constitution and it is on display at the TUCC.
That’s a fact.
off topic, but the boston globe has a long article on Chicago low income housing and the role dear leader and his scuzzy friends (many of whom are on his campaign staff) played in it
http://www.boston.com/news/nation/articles/2008/06/27/grim_proving_ground_for_obamas_housing_policy/
I live in Boston, where David Axelrod’s previous class project, getting Deval Patrick elected Governor, earned him an “A” in marketing. Unfortunately for us, his protege is earning at best a “D+” in governing.
D+? That high?
I work there.
Man you’re generous.
I need new curtains
I need a cadillac
I need a lear jet
I need a book deal
The ONLY possible benefit to an obama election is that he may take this prissy primadonna with him.
Here’s an excerpt below from that excellent article (thanks for the link). Note the last paragraph in which Valerie Jarret, Obama senior advisor, has the nerve to suggest that the poor people in these slums in Obama’s district are better off as a result of such private housing investments (enabled by Obama). Obama has a lousy record of helping poor AAs. He doesn’t deserve their votes.
“The campaign did not respond to questions about whether Obama was aware of the problems with buildings in his district during his time as a state senator, nor did it comment on the roles played by people connected to the senator.
Among those tied to Obama politically, personally, or professionally are:
Valerie Jarrett, a senior adviser to Obama’s presidential campaign and a member of his finance committee. Jarrett is the chief executive of Habitat Co., which managed Grove Parc Plaza from 2001 until this winter and co-managed an even larger subsidized complex in Chicago that was seized by the federal government in 2006, after city inspectors found widespread problems.
Allison Davis, a major fund-raiser for Obama’s US Senate campaign and a former lead partner at Obama’s former law firm. Davis, a developer, was involved in the creation of Grove Parc and has used government subsidies to rehabilitate more than 1,500 units in Chicago, including a North Side building cited by city inspectors last year after chronic plumbing failures resulted in raw sewage spilling into several apartments.
Antoin “Tony” Rezko, perhaps the most important fund-raiser for Obama’s early political campaigns and a friend who helped the Obamas buy a home in 2005. Rezko’s company used subsidies to rehabilitate more than 1,000 apartments, mostly in and around Obama’s district, then refused to manage the units, leaving the buildings to decay to the point where many no longer were habitable.
Campaign finance records show that six prominent developers - including Jarrett, Davis, and Rezko - collectively contributed more than $175,000 to Obama’s campaigns over the last decade and raised hundreds of thousands more from other donors. Rezko alone raised at least $200,000, by Obama’s own accounting.
One of those contributors, Cecil Butler, controlled Lawndale Restoration, the largest subsidized complex in Chicago, which was seized by the government in 2006 after city inspectors found more than 1,800 code violations.
Butler and Davis did not respond to messages. Rezko is in prison; his lawyer did not respond to inquiries.
Jarrett, a powerful figure in the Chicago development community, agreed to be interviewed but declined to answer questions about Grove Parc, citing what she called a continuing duty to Habitat’s former business partners. She did, however, defend Obama’s position that public-private partnerships are superior to public housing.
“Government is just not as good at owning and managing as the private sector because the incentives are not there,” said Jarrett, whose company manages more than 23,000 apartments. “I would argue that someone living in a poor neighborhood that isn’t 100 percent public housing is by definition better off.”
no problem, glad to share.
Nothing angers me more about Barack “I didn’t know”
Obama’s change message than these reports of Chicago’s low income housing disaster.
I might believe he didn’t know if many of the buildings were not in his district and if the people who received enormous amounts of money to manage
these properties were not his friends.
It is outrageous he is not held accountable for his actions or inactions.
I can only imagine the outrage if McCain or Clinton were the State Senator involved with these despicable developers.
Thank you! So glad to see someone had the guts to try to bring this out from under the rug.
Let’s send a thank you to the author of the article.
The Boston Globe article is well worth the time it takes to read it. At least watch the video. See the results of Obama’s privatization policies put into action. The video should be required viewing for anyone planning to vote for BO.
Although the Globe is way left of center, and has endorsed BO, they do have journalistic integrity. The path of BO through the public housing fiasco is clear, he used his political clout to aid his political contributors in securing the publicly subsidized contracts to build and manage these public housing monstrosities. Now some of these same people are fundraisers and advisors for his presidential bid. This is “hope and change”? No, it’s typical political bs. It is the same way Halliburton gets no bid government contracts, its the same way that pork gets put into appropriations.

Republicans would be out of their minds not to run ads like this in Michigan. Anti-hunting is political suicide here, and those guys and gals like their guns.

Beautiful. Very moving video.
Thanks!
http://www.nativeamericansagainstobama.com/
Very moving video, thank you!
This is one of the most compelling ads I’ve ever seen; it transcends politics and parties and gets to the heart of the matter about who is being harmed by Obama’s wanderlust. Most of the votes where his chair was empty were “unimportant” bills that would impact the lives of those having the least political power; making him just one of a long line of MIA politicians who failed in their duty “to protect and defend” their country and its citizens.
Absolutely.
LOTS of hunting takes place in Michigan and other northern states. I’m quite sure that hunters are over the moon about the Supremes’ ruling yesterday. And they’re looking at Obama’s stance on the ruling.
Obama’s definitely finished in Michigan.
Such an elitist…that is all!
Howard Kurtz leads off his column today in the Washington Post on Obama’s shifting gun control stances with this gut blow:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/06/27/AR2008062701118.html
No wonder he won`t release his medical records. It would reveal that he has NO BALLS!!
That is the God’s honest truth …
LOL, HARP !!
LOL! Thats so true!
http://www.nativeamericansagainstobama.com/
“linguistic pretzel-twisting” = “bite my tongue”
or is that how BO makes the fuse for his CRAP CANNON?
You sound like an idiot, original poster. The USSC FABRICATED a Second Amendment right and VIOLATED DECADES OF PRECEDENT in this stupid ruling.
The court has a majority of Federalist Society hacks or at least a bloc of them to make up rulings just because they can.
I can’t believe so-called Democrats think the NRA’s horseshit about the Second Amendment is more important than the rights of crime victims.
But it’s fine and dandy for Obamabots to ignore Obama’s horseshit?
Yeah - that’s what we thought.
Why don’t you take this up with the Constitutional Law Professor? He seems to be up to the minute on all of this ….
Well apparently Obama agrees. Or does he? Who knows. Guess we’ll find out after he takes the Oath of Office. Perhaps he has a “Secret Plan”. Kind of like his “Secret Plan” to overturn FISA, or criminally prosecute the telecom companies (see Olberman), or something.
Kinda reminds me of Nixon’s “Secret Plan” to end the Vietnam War. That turned out so well, didn’t it?
So, true his plan is to say whatever, whenever its suits HIS needs. Then do what he wants later…….
http://www.nativeamericansagainstobama.com/
How about the right of potential crime victims not to become victims in their very homes by giving them the means to defend themselves?
They are not victims yet.
So why should they have “rights”?
/snark off
“so-called democrats”– WOW! That’s a new one! Gosh, we all are not an extension of yourself or else, obviously we WOULD be “real” democrats and think perfectly just like you, Susie!
This liberal democrat thinks the Supreme Court got it right.
Susan Nunes;
With Scalia going hunting with Cheney where did you think this would go?
The constitution vs “the rights of crime victims”. What crimes?
Can you elaborate? Out on the frontier guns meant food and self defense.
that buzzing noise is the propeller on Susan’s beanie going 500 mph. Face it, in the 232 year history of the USA, owning guns is a right that the framers felt was important enough to put in the bill of rights second. Criminals for the most part don’t use legally owned firearms. And yes, some democrats own guns. And yes, some of us belong to the NRA. Guess who’s getting a donation this year from me, the DNC or the NRA?
the issue here is whether the flipflop flipflop sound emanating from kampkoolaid is another one of the many, many issues on electability. Pro gun democrats, republicans and independents (you know the clingy types your dear leader so effetely dismissed as irrelevant) take gun ownership rights seriously, as we know it is our right, and we do vote, and contribute to the NRA and GOAL, who advocate for us, not just some politicians scummy pals like bo has made a career out of aiding and abbetting
“that buzzing noise is the propeller on Susan’s beanie going 500 mph”
Thanks for that image/laugh!
Hilarious!
I am here only for comic relief and bizzare factoids
i leave the heavy lifting to others
Any news from unitymyass NH?
Perhaps because we have a process for overturning a Constitutional Amendment and it doesn’t include presidents and absolutely does not include possible, probable, maybe, or presumptive political party presidential nominees.
It will take more than an act of Congress to do away with any of the Bill of Rights (of which the ratifiers of the Constitution paid particular attention to Amendment 2 and 3); unless you’re willing to let Bush Law stand. Which is why we are so upset to see Democrats playing by Bush election rules.
And don’t get too excited over the prosect of Obama maybe getting a chance to appoint a Supreme Court judge because he was all for Roberts until he was informed it might harm his political agenda.
……any regulation whatsoever is the camel’s nose under the tent. ??????
Who seriously says that with a straight face?!?
camel’s nose?….garlic nose?….I`m confused.
“That’s not the handgun I knew…”
That’s not the handgun I shot myself in the foot with ….
Thats not the grease for my CRAP CANNON I knew!
Does anyone know if BO has ever squeezed of a few rounds with a gun instead of his pie hole?
i’m waiting for his appearance with his brand new blaze orange orvis gear
(in my best elmer fudd voice)

I wish we could find out if Obama is also lying about those emails/text messages to Scarlett Johanson. Is Scarlett Obama’s Monroe mama?
Is it possible to prove he is lying on that issue?
Because if lying he is people will wonder why!
Are you suggesting that Scarlett Johanson and Larry Sinclair have alot in common?
I’m suggesting that maybe that is another issue that Obama flip-flops.
If Obama is “BI” then there must be others out there that have had relationships with him but are keeping quiet for now.
Exactly what is the relationship Obama has with Father Pfleger?
ooohhhhhh
the old altar boy line
fightthe
truthsmears will go nutsBack to my original question.
Can it be proved that Obama is lying about his contact(s) with Scarlett?
What would all of Obama’s “drive by” constituents think about him banning guns? I mean like, what would they use in their drive by? Bean shooters?
Go to Unity, New Hampshire this morning. Pumas are meeting at the Rest Area on Interstate 91 in Vermont between exits 6 and 7 on the east side, rougly between the towns of Rockingham and Springfield.
Pumas will arrive at 8:00AM EST, and stay until 9:00AM EST. You DO NOT need a shuttle bus ticket or an event ticket to attend. Pumas will be arranging rides to the event from the meeting area at the Rest Area. A million thanks to the tireless MAWM of the Confluence for organizing, motivating, and making it happen.
* Bring your signs. They will not be allowed into the event, but can be carried outside.
* Wear black.
* We will have some food there, but you are welcome to bring more.
* MOST IMPORTANTLY, BRING YOURSELVES! ALL PUMAS WELCOME. PLEASE JOIN US!
Great idea!

Are you sure Charlie Rose moderated a debate?
Yes, he did.
No, it was Charlie Gibson; it’s a typo.
Charlie Rose moderated an online debate sponsored by Yahoo, Huffpo and Slate … jeez. You’d think that only some of us get Google ….
beebop:
The post above refers to the ABC debate; that was Charlie Gibson. BTW Charlie Rose has been a full blown PUNK for a while. Can’t stand him anymore; sucking up to Kissinger, William Buckley and Obama.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/06/26/AR2008062604162.html
This clearly shows that Clinton supporters are NOT backing Obama today OR any other day for that matter.
“But the Pumas soldier on.”
Loved that quote.
But we’ll all have calluses on our pads by the time we get to Denver.
Even Eugene “I heart Obama” Robinson had a piece today basically saying that the Supreme Court’s ruling was correct.
That should tell you all you need to know.
Robinson’s piece is in The Washington Post.
Eugene Robinson is an obamanation tool. and an old fool to boot.
I can’t stand the guy.
That was a great piece that Robinson wrote.
Thanks.
Sure thing. Glad I could help out.

Hillary is supposed to be done, she’s (cough)campaigning with and for barky but I’m still getting emails from her with letters on “Hillary for President” letter head. Now if I were done and heading back to the senate like a good little party democrat I would have changed my letter head back to Hillary United States Senator. I’m sure she is still hoping just like us that something sticks to barky and takes him down.
Oh and on this post the trolls wont like barky and guns in the same sentence. You must me calling for him to be killed or something.
C’mon you guys & gals, freaks & trolls! The could-have-been-president is a CONstitutional law expert given his exposure to the likes of Ayers, Rezko, Wright, Pfleger, et. al. I’ll drink (Kool-Aid) to that!

Will someone put up the graffic of all the people Obama has thrown in front of the bus.
I think the number of people under that bus could actually be reaching the maximum allowed to fit under a bus?! - CALL GUINESS BO is about to set a new book of world records. Obama has got to hold the record!
Picture it yellow bus - and there is Wright, Pfleger, Grandma, the BLT Church, Hillary and Bill oh and then he drug them out becuase he now “needs them” and christ almighty - you can name the rest.
