Winning Hearts and Minds?

The other day, I wrote a post about James Dobson and Barack Obama, “Wheel…Of…Theology.” Obama’s camp has been trying to woo Evangelical Christians, youth in particular, including starting a “Jericho Generation” group or some such thing…

Okay – let’s just stop right there. I hate to digress, but what does it say that the people he pursues the MOST are young, inexperienced people? I mean, really – the part of the brain that helps make good decisions isn’t even fully set until one is into adulthood. I’m not kidding! (Here is but one article on the topic of Decision-Making - there are TONS available online.) That is why, so often, you will hear someone exclaim, “I can’t believe SO-and-So drank and drove (or lied, or stole, whatever) – this seems so out of character for him/her,” and they are in their late teens or twenties. It is that part of the brain that isn’t fully formed that allows the Straight A, straight-laced student to go joy-riding, out of the clear blue sky, for example. Or to support a candidate because he seems “cool,” not paying attention to what he actually says, or has done. I think you know what I mean. Anyway, it is VERY telling that he constantly pursues YOUNG people. Just sayin’.

And this is the problem with people like McCaskill and Caroline Kennedy, among others, allowing thier CHILDREN to convince them to vote for Obama! Their children’s reasoning facilities are not yet physically or neuroogically set, and they are listening to THEM?? That is problematic on all sorts of levels, like why adults are acquiescing to their kids, for starters. I think we can all look back on our youth and remember how we were CERTAIN we were SO right about everything, and adults didn’t know anything. We knew so much more, were so much more with it, and our arguments were better. As we look back, we realize we didn’t know squat, cerainly not on the level we do now. And now there is scientific evidence that at least as far as reasoning is concerned, adults have better ability neuorlogically. So, yes, Claire and Caroline, by all means – let your KIDS tell you who to support! That’s the most reasonable thing to do – not.

Anywho – to get back to the topic, Obama is trying to woo Evangelical Christians. James Dobson, of Focus on the Family, had some criticims of Obama, particularly his biblical interpretation. Dobson said (quote from the article mentioned below), “I think he’s deliberately distorting the traditional understanding of the Bible to fit his own worldview, his own confused theology,” Dobson said.”

I think we all know how well Obama deals with criticism. Ahem. He is not fond of it, and tends to lash out. Bear in mind that Dobson’s responses to him are based on a speech Obama gave in which he said, “that people of faith, like himself, “try to translate some of our concerns in a universal language so that we can have an open and vigorous debate rather than having religion divide us.” Hang on a moment – I am so busy having my head explode at OBAMA talking about not having religion “divide us,” that I can’t type…Whew. OK. I think I am better. Can I just say, Obama attends a church that is INCREDIBLY DIVISIVE and he has the “audacity” to say this?! After attending TUCC, the Nation of Islam supporting church for TWENTY years, he says this??? Wow. Just freakin’ wow. He added in his speech, “People aren’t reading their Bibles.”

Well, sure enough, he had THIS to say on Tuesday about Dobson’s criticism in an AP article, “Obama Dismisses Dobson Criticism About Bible“: “”I think you’ll see that he was just making stuff up, maybe for his own purposes.” Dobson is “making stuff up”? Gosh, he really IS eloquent, isn’t he?!? And this: “Asked about Dobson’s assessment, Obama said “somebody would be pretty hard-pressed to make that argument” that he was distorting the Bible.” Way to go about winning the hearts and minds of the Evangelical Christians, Obama! Insult one of their foremost leaders! That oughta do the trick! (And may I say – again – I have absolutely NO love lost for Dobson, and completely disagree with HIS interpretation of the Bible, but I am not trying to get any of his people to vote for me, either! Just to be clear – not a fan of Dobson’s.)

Honestly, I think Obama is unclear on the concept of bringing people into the fold, or has really internalized the hype about himself. He does seem to think he can say whatever derogatory comments he wants about leaders who represent millions of people, then get their people to fall in line behind him. That sure takes some nerve. Or something like that. Fill in your own word (hubris? Delusion?). I suppose this should come as no surprise to Hillary supporters, though – he pretty much reamed her time and time again, disparaging her character, making ad hominem attacks constantly, demeaning her, and women in general, with his sexist remarks, and overall responding with great arrogance – why WOULDN’T we just jump on board?!? Now he is trying it with James Dobson and Evangelical Christians! Let’s just see how well this works out for him, even with the help of people like The Reverend Kirbyjon Caldwell, a former Bush supporter. I daresay, more people have heard of Dobson…Like I said, this Obama sure has a unique way to try and win the hearts and minds…

Oh, wait! Speaking of Obama’s incredibly divisive church, and his claim that religions shouldn’t divide us, Father Michael Pfleger said on “Good Morning America” recently that he stands by the message he preached against Senator Clinton, her whole “entitlement” thing, as he is now calling it. As if Senator Clinton EVER claimed she was entitled to anything, especially in the racist way he depicted. That was ALL Pfleger, and near as I can tell, he broke one of the Big Ten by “bearing false witness against his neighbor” with that one. Here’s the link, in case you want to read it for yourself: Priest Who Mocked Clinton… What a piece of work, and how unfortunate that ABC is giving him any air time at all…Sheesh.

Great diary Amy!!
Actually I’m glad ABC gave Phleger the time – so we could see just how deranged and unChristian he is – no remorse for his hatemongering and race-baiting FROM THE PULPIT – and will say and do anything to promote Obama and Black Liberation Theology.
And yet Dems and Obamabots have railed against Bush fusing politics and religion.

kevin — The Obama people want us to get used to this level of discourse. It all becomes part of the political din when there is no outrage attached. After a while, Obama’s people believe they will have programmed the American People to believe that they will say and do anything they choose and that their reality is the new reality –stand against them and you will be punished.

Obama wants an army of young obots because the youth don’t have much of an attention span and buy into the utopia sermons. News about Wright and Pfleger are quickly forgotten when your attention is on the moment and how good the messiah makes you feel. Also, the moment a young obot begins to doubt, the elders can quickly bring them back into the fold by calling the youngster a racist.

Way back yonder-yes I am a PROUD hick! Before supporting Obama was so cool with the kids-I started listening to my 14 yr old talk about the O.
I just watched with amazement how convicted my son was in his pro-O decision!

so, I decided to check out some of the anti-Hillary youtubes made by kids my son’s age.
It was bad bad then in Feb-it is worse now!

It has taken me the better part of 3 mos to show my kid why! I won’t vote for Obama!Whew! thankfully now he is informed to the max!
It is so true how parents today are letting their kids decide who they should vote for! and soo much more!
Come on Parents! Who is raising who!?

As for Dobson and O ever having a public exchange!
Now I want to SEE that one! rotflmbo!!!

Both Hitler and Mao involved the children in their dictaterships. Get them while they are young, in their formative years. Children who would/will accuse even their own parents? Obama is worse than a piece of diseased feces. This is what the democratic party now has to offer?

Your point about the younger voters is spot on, Amy.

Just this morning, my husband and I were talking about the young voters who’ve been drawn to the Obama campaign and how different they are from the older voters who are drawn to Clinton. In addition to pursuing almost exclusively the young vote, what I find particularly creepy is targeting children under 12 in his Kids for Obama campaign.

sorry to cut and past from wiki
Organization
The HJ was organized into corps under adult leaders, and the general membership comprised boys aged fourteen to eighteen. From 1936, membership of the HJ was compulsory for all young German men. The HJ was also seen as an important stepping stone to future membership of the elite Schutzstaffel (the SS). Members of the HJ were particularly proud to be bestowed with the single Sig Rune (victory symbol) by the SS. The SS utilized two Sig Runes as their mark, and this gesture served to symbolically link the two groups.

The HJ was organized into local cells on a community level. Such cells had weekly meetings at which various Nazi doctrines were taught by adult HJ leaders. Regional leaders typically organized rallies and field exercises in which several dozen Hitler Youth cells would participate. The largest HJ gathering usually took place annually, at Nuremberg, where members from all over Germany would converge for the annual Nazi Party rally.

When I went to serve as a lay pastor at a small, rural church, one of the first things I told them was that I wouldn’t preach politics. I would preach the Gospel, and they would have to make up their own minds about politics. Jesus was very clear about this when he said, “Render under to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s and render unto to God the things that are God’s.” Politics doesn’t belong in the pulpit.

People in glass denominations shouldn’t throw stones. Let’s see the spanish inquisition, burning people to the stake because they say the earth revolves and around the sun, wasn’t a catholic priest there when the spanish captured and Killed the King of the inca’s giving his blessings, were they also the ones that hinted around the fact that blacks, native americans, and asians were pagens and there for it is ok if they take our lands, the Crusades, the ransacking of Constanstinopal eventhough it was a christian city, but hey the just had to have that gold, covering up molestations of little kids, I could go on and on, that’s why Jesus says Judge not lest ye also be judge, or did he just miss that part?

I sadly must defend the Church in part here, sigh

there were Priests who cane to the New World, and wrote works that saved thousands of lives of the Native peoples, and Isabella did insist they be given the chance to convert and be educated to Christ, and freed the ’slaves’ that were sent to her in Spain, no one in England sent back their trophy ‘Indians’ that I know of, I know but it was the 15th century, of the ‘conquerors’ the later Spanish explorations and settlements in the New World were ‘less’ horrendous than the other imperialist cultures IIRC..not happy day by any means, but disease killed millions, where in Ireland, once Catholicism was banished by HVIII, later the new Anglican Protestants under Cromwell felt comfortable killing millions of Irish Catholics as savages, skin color did not enter the picture there, just their Catholicism made them victims..

the Black Legend was in large part spread by the English as propaganda against the Spanish, all these people were brutal, as Hobbes said it was a short brutal life….

Young people don’t have a clue as to what took place in this modern sophisticated world barely 60 years ago–because schools no longer teach civics. Why would a Democrat go after young evangelical christians unless he wants to engage in a generational war? I never agree with Dobson but I am glad he is standing up to Obama–someone who goes to a racist church has no business recruiting evangelicals.

“The vandalism happened in a City of Orlando parking lot on the corner of south and orange.
Phrases including “Obmama smokes crack” and others phrases with racial slurs were written in blue spray paint on the white city cars and trucks.
Other vehicles appeared to have had their gas tanks tampered with.
Along with the paint, hundreds of business cards were left on windshields.
The cards contain criticism of Obama on one side, and support for Hillary Clinton and her family on the other side.
The same cards were left on channel nine vehicles in Daytona Beach several weeks ago.
The vandalism happened the same night the Obama campaign kicked off its Florida organization with parties across the state.”

This actually sounds like street theater the obot youth would do.

Comment by Coster | 2008-06-29 09:45:32

Spray painting cars in the middle of the night = youth.

Having business cards printed up, putting them on news media cars weeks earlier, and timing the vandalism so thatit happened the same night the Obama campaign kicked off its Florida organization with parties across the state = organization.

Youth, organization = obama campaign.

And how *convenient* is it to kick off the Florida organization to make it look like Clinton supporters were guilty of racism?

His church, his mentors, and Ayers all have upheaval and revenge in their hearts, which is why I said a race war.

Which has been one of Ayer’s dreams from the beginning….decades later he isn’t saying anything different.

So, I will take him and his wife at their word when they say ‘down with captialism’….they want to take America down.

The only way they see to achieve that goal is from within.

I’m not giving Obama, Ayers, Dohrn, Auchi, the keys.

I don’t appreciate when Dobson and the likes interject religion into politics. But I REALLY don’t like Nobama and his crew interjecting politics into my religion! The seperation of Church and State protects BOTH institutions. Politics is secular. Spirituality is Divine. While my faith shapes how I behave on this earth and how I treat my fellow man, politics can’t bring me Salvation.

I don’t turn to people like Dobson or Rev. Robertson for political advise on how to vote. And I sure don’t turn to Rev. Wright or Rev. Sharpton for spiritual guidance on spending eternity with God.

Comment by JoseyJ | 2008-06-29 10:39:18

The big difference is Parsley and Hagee merely endorsed McCain. He wasn’t a member of their churches for 20 years.
Obama ENDORSED Rev. Wright and Black Liberation Theology that fuses politics and religion!

Obama = Bush

AND Obama defended Wright until he broke out of the basement and declared Obama was “just another politician.”
Oops! it was OK with Obama for Wright to bash America, the Clintons, Jews, Catholics, etc. – but exposing the Truth about Obama – can’t have that!

Talk about the youth all you want. They can be excused for lousy decisions. What are we going to do about our democratic governors, senators, and representatives that have flocked to Obama. What the hell kind of people have we elected to represent us. They don’t even listen to us. They only listened to Dean, Pelosi and Reed.

We need to get rid of the whole bunch of them.

R. Emmanual was on George Stephanopolis this morning with the gov. of Minnesota who asked him to name one thing that Obama has lead or done or sponsored that he has seen to fruition. He couldn’t do it. But Emmanual sat there and said that Obama was a great leader and how lucky we were he would be our president. I feel like I am in an insane asylum called the USA. What the hell is going on.

Our elected officials can see the same man running for president that we see. They know the same things about him that we know. Most of us know that crap has been nominated to represent the country. What do we do with all these idiot elected democrats that are SD and voting for Obama.

It is ludicrous and outrageous that this is going on in this country. I am beside myself with anger.

Comment by georgiapeach | 2008-06-30 09:02:01

They are following Obama because they are just shitting-their-pants excited about the “new young voting coalition” that Obama has (according to them)single-handedly brought into the party. They’re too damned stupid to figure out that a lot of those people signed up to vote for the first time AGAINST Obama, not for him. And Lord have mercy, look at all those millions he’s raised. The dollar signs in their eyes are so big, they can’t see all the danger signs right under their noses. Some of the party officials have convinced them that with Obama’s new money machine coalition, they can tell the working class to fuck off. They think that we need them more than they need us. I guess we’ll see.

involving children in politics, unless they understand our country’s origins, its wars, the documents of our foundation and the ones that modify and support our current condition (Declaration of Independence, Bill of Rights, constitutional amendments, and the like), is wrong. You can tell a child anything and if you are an adult, they pretty much believe anything you say. Hells bells, even adults are vulnerable to “urban myths.”

To target children as obama has (if you haven’t seen it, take a look at his campaign website). It’s chilling. We used to have laws prohibiting children’s tv program hosts from selling/endorsing stuff to our kids because of their undue influence. Why

Mao’s Red Guards actually had their start as a more benign group of middle school aged children (12-14 yo) who were politically active, but only knew what they were told–not what was true or how to contextualize it. Make a point of talking with any older Chinese about this horrible period in China.

Good article, Amy!

I don’t know Dobson but I understand he’s supposed to be a representative of the evangelicals. Politics has always been separate from the churches I’ve attended so neither Obama or Dobson would have an automatic influence on my beliefs. On the other hand, Obama’s out-of-context quotations from the Bible speak volumes and I personally resent his use of religion during this campaign. Obama certainly appears to be a wolf in sheeps clothing. The only question remains is whether evangelicals will be mad enough to send him a message in November. If that happens, don’t think that it’s because he took on Dobson, per se. It will be because

he’s claiming, yet again, to hold beliefs that he doesn’t genuinely espouse.

As an aside, I can tell you the DNC’s behavior has already changed my vote in three local elections as well as the Presidential election.

(Yes, Michigan Super-Delegates! I want to send you a thank you for the way you moved up the primaries, changed the rules midstream and watered down our votes based upon who YOU thought we really meant to vote for!)

The DNC elite have made such indefensible choices and I’m awestruck by the arrogance of party leaders who assume the ignorant masses will fall in line. Do they really believe that their constituents are this stupid?

Comment by Connie | 2008-06-29 11:51:36

Yes, these kids always go with the hype. I have an 11th year-old grandniece. We were watching a rally on TV. While we were all saying “Go,. Hillary!”, she shouted “Obama, Obama.” “Oh, are you for Obama?” “Do you know what he is running for?”, “Do you know his policies?” “Do you think he is qualified and ready for the job?”, etc, etc. She just shrugged her shoulders. Why aren’t you for Hillary? “She’s a girl” she said. Who said that. My friends. And then she said again, Obama, Obama.. The bottom line is these kids think that Obama is a rock star and the importance of the office he is running for has not sunk in on them.

In Kennedy and McCaskill’s case, it’s like the Blind Leading the Blind!

Parents have become way tooooo Liberal but to let their little pipsqeak Obamabots who don’t know how to tie their political shoelaces to dictate to them whom to vote for….is soooo OBAMABOTIC!

GO ROAR, PUMAS!

Obama’s young followers are the blind leading the blind…They have no faith and no values…

The vast majority of them are just immature pre-adults. (17-23 y/o) They are bored slackers who have nothing in life to be passionate about.

Think about it. They are the instant gratification generation. They have computers, cell phones, x-boxes, wii, etc. Their parents are in hock up to their noses to give them everything, including over priced liberal arts educations.

They grew up with the CGI animation of the prequels to the Star Wars Trilogy, the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, the Harry Potter books and movies…of which there are no more to look forward to until Christmas. What else is going to fill their time?

They are interested in this election because they cannot differentiate between fiction and reality. The lines are blurred between good and evil…in their minds anyone who stands in the way of what they want is evil.

They have never been told NO! This is why they get so frustrated and angry and since they cannot change the mind of rational adults who do not live in their homes and have to tolerate their petulant behavior.

Unlike their parents, who relent and give them what they want after they have pulled out every weapon in their emotional blackmail arsenal including, but not limited to; foot-stomping, whining, door-slamming, and the silent treatment.

Since they cannot get their way with us as they can with their permissive parents they resort to sabotage and subterfuge to get their way.

An Obama Pod that I know personally, left home as a teen to live with his adult boyfriend and his parents continued to pay for his car, education and health insurance. He has a part-time job in a liberal setting and doesn’t have to work hard at it.

He attended college at taxpayers expense and has secured several undergraduate degrees, none of which will yield him a job. So he has decided to teach…until he decides what advanced degree to pursue. This is the type of spoiled, over indulged, hyper-educated-but not workforce ready, pre-adults that support Obama.

So for everyone who has ever seen a child throw a tantrum at the grocery store check out line and get the candy bar they were screaming for just to shut them up…that child is now grown and sipping a Red-Bull, smoking a clove cigarette, and popping a Ritalin, in front of his or her computer and they are throwing a temper tantrum because you won’t let them have their candy bar.

Mc Caskill is a jerk. Her candidacy in the Senate was sponsored by the Emily’s list, a powerful organization that funds and supports women running for office. Hillary also contributed financially and campaigned for this woman. What a nice way to pay back for the support!

Obama the Precious one seems to have become addicted to rallies and adoring crowds. It’s like a drug, he gets energized by people who no matter what he says or does keep on giving and adulating him. It’s within this context that he performs his best, also w/the teleprompter of course. That’s why he doesn’t like debates or town hall meetings, where things are not “fixed,” people in the audience aren’t “arranged” according to race, age, and no turbants allowed.

You are right about Mc Caskill. Bill Clinton did campaign for her in her 2006 Senate race, and here is what she had to say about him.

October 8, 2006, on Meet the Press Claire McCaskill gets honest about Bill Clinton:

Tim Russert: “You had Bill Clinton come in and raise money for you, do you think Bill Clinton is a great President?

Claire McCaskill: “I do. I have a lot of problems with some of his personal issues. I said at the time, I think he’s been a great leader but I don’t want my daughter near him.”

The Real Clinton legacy.

Poor Bill, he even went and campaigned for Claire and that’s the thanks he gets?
