Who’s responsible for shutting down a number of anti-Obama Blogspot accounts?

Cross-posted from my blog, Bloggasm.com.

____________________________

When Carissa Snedeker went to log into her Blogspot account Wednesday evening at about 7:30, she had no idea what would be waiting for her. She had created her blog, Blue Lyon, three years ago and up until this point had very few problems posting new content. But this time a message from Google came up when she visited her dashboard.

“This blog has been locked due to possible Blogger Terms of Service violations,” the message stated. “You may not publish new posts until your blog is reviewed and unlocked.”

When Snedeker clicked on the link at the bottom of the message she came to another one that told her that her blog “has characteristics of a spam blog” and, because of this, it had been locked. It allowed her the chance to send an “unlock request” but told her she’d have to wait up to four business days before someone at Google could review her blog and confirm it wasn’t publishing spam.

blogspot locked

“At first I thought it was just this random thing with Blogger’s spam bots,” she told me in a phone interview. “I thought that perhaps in their looking across the blogger universe, that I got accidentally flagged somehow. Stuff like that happens.”

But a short time later Snedeker received an email from another blogger claiming that a number of anti-Obama blogs had been “hacked” that same night. After some digging it became apparent that several Blogspot accounts had been shut down because of similar spam issues, and nearly all of them had three things in common: Most were pro-Hillary Clinton blogs, all were anti-Barack Obama, and several were listed on justsaynodeal.com, an anti-Obama website.

A “Flag Blog” link sits at the very top of every free Blogspot account.

If a person finds objectionable content on a Blogspot site or suspects it’s publishing spam, he or she can click on the link and it will send a notice to Google requesting “human review.”

I spoke to several of the bloggers who had accounts locked and every single one was convinced that it was Obama supporters who had flagged the blogs in some kind of concerted effort to silence them. But when I asked for specific evidence of this, most simply pointed out that only anti-Obama blogs were targeted — a fact that is certainly suspicious but not especially conclusive.

The incident highlights the often-contentious relationship between online Hillary and Obama supporters. Popular sites like Digg.com have consistently posted anti-Hillary links and popular liberal blog Daily Kos experienced a “boycott” a few months ago when several Hillary supporters left the site.

A blogger who uses the pseudonym “GeekLove” (she wouldn’t agree to a phone interview and wouldn’t tell me her real name) said to me via email that when her blog, Come A Long Way, was shut down she thought it was a fluke as well.

“I also felt a little bit humiliated that someone would think to characterize my Blog as ’spam,’” she said. “I had no idea why it would be ’spam’ I assumed it was just some sort of mistake. I did think it was an isolated incident. I requested the Blogger review. I then went to the Hillary Clinton Forum, a place I frequently participate in on line discussions, and I saw Nobama’s post ‘Blogger just shut down my NObama Blog!!‘ Then when other Blogger blogs were affected, I knew it was more than coincidence.”

Like the others I spoke to, she immediately became convinced that Obama supporters were behind the outages.

“I suspect that it was Obama supporters because I think the block was timed to affect blogs prior to the unity event so that we would not ‘rain on the unity parade,’ GeekLove said. “Also, Obama has ads out hiring people with no experience, except the ability to use computers. I presume these are the individuals responsible for silencing any opposition. His campaign has really harnessed the power of the internet and in the process learned to game the system in a way that I find frightening.”

When it comes to butting heads with Obama supporters, perhaps nobody has more experience than Larry Johnson. If his name rings a bell, it’s because Johnson, who worked for the CIA in the ’80s and now does military consulting, was the origin of the famous “whitey” claim. Not long ago he reported on his website that people connected with the McCain campaign are in possession of video footage of Michelle Obama saying derogatory things about white people. However, he admitted that he hadn’t actually seen the video and his two sources hadn’t seen it either. He quickly became a target of bloggers from both the right and left.

Several of the bloggers hit by the Blogspot outage also write at his site, No Quarter, and so Johnson has been watching the controversy with interest. Like the others, he believes wholeheartedly that Obama supporters are behind the “attack,” and he told me in a phone interview that his website had experienced similar problems a few months ago.

“We were contacted by our host in March and they claimed we were draining too many resources,” he said. “They shut us down completely. But when we went in to look at our site statistics it was evident that something else was clearly going on — we were the subject of some kind of spam attack that was putting a strain on the site.”

no quarter logo

To ward off such attacks, he decided to go with his own server, a move that he said would make it harder to shut him down. But after he published the “whitey” claims, he had more direct conflicts with Obama supporters.

“The problem with these people who had their Google accounts shut down, they’re intimidated by it,” Johnson said. “They don’t want to get themselves in a situation so they would be identified. Some of these people who get identified, the Obama folks start picking up the phone and calling. I had phone calls into my office, threatening me, saying that you’re going to be fired, let me talk to your boss. I told them to go fuck themselves, because I am my own boss. It helps to be self-employed.”

Johnson and the other people interviewed for this article all agreed that Google was partly to blame for the outages. It was because of the search giant’s “guilty until proven innocent” approach, they said, that allowed the attackers to shut down the blogs so easily.

“My biggest objection is not necessarily that these people did this, but that Blogger had the policy that basically locks you out,” Snedeker said. “In other words you’re guilty until proven innocent, instead of the other way around, and that was what frustrated me.”

“I understand the need if you have some complaints from people that you need to investigate it,” Johnson said. “But you also have to make sure that the person filing the complaint is legitimate.”

An email I sent to Google requesting comment was not immediately returned. Nearly all the bloggers who were targeted by this spam crusade are not waiting around for their accounts to be restored. They’ve flocked to Wordpress and opened free accounts there (including Blue Lyon and Come A Long Way), and they don’t have any immediate plans to return to their original URLs once the dust settles.

What’s perhaps even more notable is that none of the people I spoke to is planning any kind of backlash against Obama supporters. It seemed to me that, for the most part, they just want to be left alone.

“While I am expressing my political beliefs, on Blogger it was a simple push of a button to mark my blog as spam and silence me,” GeekLove said. ” Pushing the button set me back a couple of days and I was unable to post anything during the unity event. The prospect of starting over on another blog was also daunting [and] I briefly, only briefly considered [giving] up blogging. Tactics like this work to silence opposition, why wouldn’t we expect more of that in the future?”

Did I read correctly that the Obama campaign passed $3 million dollars to Google? Would that affect their actions?

I’m sure that the Wall St. and Soros money that went to the super delegates (more than Hillary could afford) had NO effect on their jumping on the bandwagon as ordered by Ms. Nancy P.

I wonder which race they are going to target for the the final solution. Oh thats right they are already making it clear its not about race but about what you believe. You are either with them or they will target you, threaten you attack you, and do everything they can to destroy you.

Yeah they sure do understand Unity.

And we do to, thats why America will unite to throw this piece of shit and his disgusting campaign of dirty politics back into the chicago butter where it belongs.

Obama Snubs the DLC

The Slow Death of the DLC

By Taegan Goddard | June 30, 2008 9:28 AM | Permalink | Comments (0)
The centrist Democratic Leadership Council holds its national meeting in Chicago — just a block away from Sen. Barack Obama’s campaign headquarters. However, Obama will not attend.

Even though the Illinois senator has moved to the center on so many issues in recent weeks, he’s not willing to incur the wrath of liberal Democrats by speaking at the convention of the group described by many as “Republican-lite.”

With none of the Democratic presidential candidates in attendance at last year’s meeting either, it’s fair to say the DLC has officially lost its mojo.

Comment by s. hall | 2008-06-30 12:57:58

Fred — Obama is not interested in the Democratic Base of women, white workers, Seniors, Boomers etc. Now he isn’t interested in DLC Dems. He must have a lot of faith in AA’s, the creative class and rich liberals — to throw away the Democratic Party’s constituancies. Or could it be that the fix is in? The only people Obama panders to are those with fat wallets. Maybe they are going to buy this elections for this ignorant fraud.

Comment by alibe4hillary | 2008-06-30 13:45:25

I think you are correct. This is why the polls will continue to show Obama leading, despite my belief that he is not ahead. But how could you steal…or buy…an election without having the polls lying about Nobama’s support. We are screwed. The fix is in…I have no doubt about that.

They just want ONE voice to be heard. That’s it.

I think we need to look at the word fascism. This word gets bandied about so casually its meaning gets diluted (and a little meaningless). It is not just a word.

Don’t know about anyone else but I am very uncomfortable with this relentless push to Unity. Party Unity, Country Unity, Unity, UNITY, unity! I mean really, this much Unity just seems fascist to me and there is a reason the fasces have an axe on the end, you know. I don’t like it one bit.

Why do we have to be united? Why can’t we have our own opinion? Enough is Enough! Whatever the motivation behind the fascist tactics, the end result is still the same - Unity is not the only troublesome word being used here, “Change We Can Believe In”, “Yes We Can”, “We Are the Ones We’ve Been Waiting For” - There is no individual in these slogans, only the collective. This all seems very ominous to me.

This is a very good definition the the word, philosophy & history of Fascism.

What the Democratic party is doing now is pushing a variant of the Hitler’s notion of “One party, One people, One leader”.

We have party bosses trying to dictate whom we should vote for and if we don’t vote for the people whom the party bosses say, a great disaster will befall the nation.

The party before all.

Its all very authoritarian and unDemocratic, the party bosses no longer listen to the people and instead dictate orders like a bunch of Nazi party officials.

The party of FDR is dead.

This article was written last year and its agenda all but disappeared from the radar screen but now its obvious that the Democrats are going along with this and as for the Republicans — we shall see.

Comment by s. hall | 2008-06-30 13:06:46

caya — About 2 years ago prior to the primaries I read that Bloomberg had started this Unity Party. He wanted this country to have one party. The President would be in charge of everything and Congress would be simply window dressing. If you remember Bloomberg had a convention of his Unity Party last year and so many of the Obama supporters from the Democratic Party were there but there were many top Republicans attending also. Chuck Hagel was going to run with Bloomberg and then nothing came of that. Now we are having Unity forced down our throats–and Unity in this case means Dictator. Wouldn’t be surprised if Hagel becomes Obama’s VP.

This by itself does not justify any broad assumptions about Obama, but when you add it to the countless incidents in which pro-Hillary, pro-McCain and the anit-Obama blogs have been attacked in such huge numbers, not to mention the personal attacks and threats made to same, it is not a stretch to point the finger at the Obama minions who are well organized. Is the hiring of 400 internet junkees by the Obama people to be ignored in this monstrous attack on the freedom of speech?

Everything about Obama smells, from the internet brown-shirts, to the lies, to the associations, that no American should rest until this thug is brought down.

If this business is allowed to progress it has the real possibility of turning American into a Banana Republic with George Soros at the top pulling the strings on the puppet, Obama. My God, where the hell is the MSM?

“I don’t like living in their neighbourhood, so I am more like you…and we have a common cause against them.”, is how that works

That’s all you guys are doing whether you know it or not.

“It’s easy to get the others (Asians and Hispanics)” Anybody else think this comment is racist? Wow.

Comment by Mark | 2008-06-30 13:33:40

No silly…it’s just a fact that when looking at political and financial power sterrages in the past, some minorities would purposefully separate themselves from other minorities in order to gain approval by the ruling majority.

There are some that disavow members of theior own group in order to gain approval. These people were manipulated on an institutional level (if you know what I’m talking about) which includes not only the government but the publishing houses and other forms of media right down to theme parks. It gets deeper, but I don’t have time to get into this with you.

Do yourself a favour and find out who creates and publishes IQ tests for the schools, and what formative recreational industries they own on the side….that’s only the tip of the iceberg……

Then play your spin StrawberrybitesBarky.
Do the research.

Comment by Jeremiah God Damn AmeriKKKa Wright | 2008-06-30 15:21:05

92% of any ethnicity voting for one candidate is blatently racist.

Anybody who tries to spin it any differently is Obullshitting.

If they claim arent voting for his skin color, they are lying.

If you claim that 92% of an ethnic group is voting for him because of his issues and accomplishments which hardly any of them can ever name, and not because of his skin color, you are full of shit.

Comment by splashy | 2008-06-30 16:18:20

Every bit of that could be said about women, and how they have been and are being treated, for many thousands of years.

For instance, when IQ tests were first created, the girls trounced the boys. They scores were so much better, they had to alter the tests to make it so the boys would at least be able to compete. You see, the tests were based on verbal and rational abilities, because that was thought of as more intelligent. It was incredibly embarrassing to the people (mostly men) that devised the test.

So, they altered things so the females wouldn’t shine any more. In fact, they went so far as to try to bias the tests in favor of the males, to put the females down and boost the egos of the males. You males might think about that when you take an IQ test and compare it to the females around you. You have been the beneficiaries of “affirmative action.”

Barack Obama is a Democratic Redux of George Bush. He’s inept just like George Bush. He lies to get what he wants, just like George Bush. He’s arrogant, just like George Bush. He disinfranchises entire blocks of Americans, just like George Bush. He uses people, just like George Bush. He refuses to be vetted, just like George Bush. He gets his sycophants to attack people, just like George Bush. He rigs things, just like George Bush. He’s a thug, just like George Bush. He cheats, just like George Bush. He has unsavory friends, just like George Bush. He has a middle east conflict, just like George Bush.

Not just like, Obama makes Bush look good by comparison.

Comment by sfhillary | 2008-06-30 13:40:32

Okay, this is clinical insanity. George Bush has been clearly demonstrated to have lied in order to drag the U.S. into a catastrophic war that has killed probably well in excess of a hundred thousand people, including some four thousand Americans. He has explicitly authorized torture and a massive, and massively invasive, system of governmental spying on American citizens. He has driven the federal budget radically out of balance, which torched the value of the dollar and helped drive the entire economy into a ditch.

And Obama “makes Bush look good by comparison?” Based on what? What exactly has Obama done that is worse than launching a ruinous foreign war and turning the U.S. into a torture regime? Seriously. Tell me. Explicitly. What has Obama done that’s worse than that?

Comment by Christine | 2008-06-30 14:10:45

Other than innuendo and conjecture, do you have any prima facie evidence to support your accusations? Drawing legal conclusions before the matter has been litigated is not evidence or proof. Calling the war catastrophic is hyperbole, not fact. Read iraqthemodel.com, a blog of an iraqi student living in Baghdad to get a first hand account of the “catastrophic” situation in Baghdad. Your opinion that the federal budget is out of balance is conjecture absent any identification of the metrics and parameters and a comparison of those metrics and parameters to other industrialized economies. The value of the dollar has gone down, but it was also unsustainably overvalued. An overvalued dollar raises the price of American goods in foreign markets and floods our country with cheaper imports causing contraction at US based companies resulting in loss of jobs. Guess what, exports of American manufactured goods are accelerating, especially to Europe. Free global markets tend to balance themselves out. There are several European economies that would like to be in our ditch as you call it.

As for Obama, what has he done? Other than give a speech, nada, zilch, niente.

Comment by MessyMarcy | 2008-06-30 16:43:51

Obama does make Bush look good by comparison. At this stage of the game Bush had not done half the stuff Obama has. We just thought Bush ran a dirty campaign against Gore and Kerry — Obama has schooled Bush in what a dirty campaign really can be. We knew George Bush would be a catastrophe as President, but in all honesty did any of us realize just how truly awful it could get? There is no limit to the harm Obama can do if selected President. Can you imagine what this country will be like once the Illinois combine and all of Obama’s other criminal friends get through looting it? And Obama has, just like Bush, that same petty vindictiveness about him that requires him to exact revenge for every perceived slight. We may well be at war with half the world if he gets in office. And he has approved the spying on American citizens and spent his own campaign money like a drunken sailor, so why do you think he would not be like Bush on those issues if given the chance?

McCain is no prize, but he is an infinitely better and safer choice than Obama.

Dumbest Idea Ever: Obamaniacs Adopt “Hussein” Middle Name

By Debbie Schlussel

Hmmm . . . more evidence for future anthropologists that America is getting dumber by the minute and that if Obama is elected, morons populate America in fartoo large numbers.

The New Obama slogan: “We Are All Hussein.” Why not go a step further and do, “We Are All Bin Ladens”? Or, “We Are All Mohammed”? This reminds me of the stupid AIDS campaign, starring Gwyneth Paltrow, Sarah Jess-Equine Parker, and other celebs, wearing face paints and saying, “I Am African”:

Emily Nordling has never met a Muslim, at least not to her knowledge. But this spring, Ms. Nordling, a 19-year-old student from Fort Thomas, Ky., gave herself a new middle name on Facebook.com, mimicking her boyfriend and shocking her father.

“Emily Hussein Nordling,” her entry now reads.

I wish these Obamabots would spend more time researching their chosen one and less time trying to curtail our rights to free speech.
I suppose that would require balls. They don’t have them. Speaking of balls, what is Obama so afraid of? He agrees to debates with McCain then goes back on his word. I guess he is still traumatized by the ass whooping Clinton gave him.
Boy, he sure is great with a teleprompter though. That should provide us a lot of comfort if he is elected President. God forbid that he would have to make a sound, quick, decision. “ugh…ugh..I..ugh”.

I’m so glad my site is not with Google. I strongly advise to bloggers that they should get an actual domain through Register.com or GoDaddy.com or the like — they can’t mess with you that way.

just to remind all those kool aid zombie drinkers, that i was a hillary supporter, and will STILL be voting for McCain in November. suck on that you assholes. suck on it until your head explodes!!!!

It is comments like this, and the above stating that Obama “makes Bush look good by comparison,” that remind one that ultimately what NQ is, is a hate site. You people get off on hatred. It turns you on. It makes you feel special. It has nothing to do with politics, nothing to do with reason, nothing to do with America or patriotism, and nothing to do anymore with Hillary Clinton. It has to do with your psychology, individually and as a group. You get off on hating Barack Obama.

Know it. Own it. That’s who you are. Congrats.

Comment by drkate | 2008-06-30 13:58:37

only in your mind, because you obviously have no capacity to look deeper. you are so, well, “elementary school”–oh, are you a part of ‘kids for Obama’, the brownshirts in training?

talk about hate. look at your last sentence. ha!

The campaign of hate directed against Hillary Clinton by Barack Obama exceeded anything ever before seen in American politics. You can try to direct attention away from that by calling us names, but the truth is the truth; and Obama is the practitioner of divisiveness, hatemongering and race-baiting, not us.

We do not want him to do to this country what he helped do to the south side of Chicago, and that is because we love this country. And that is why John McCain will get our vote — because when the chips are down, he will do what is best for the country. Obama will do what is best for Obama and his slumlord, criminal cronies.

Right there with ya Phil.

I’ve been voting a straight Democratic ticket for 40 years. No more.

I will vote for John McCain in November and not that unqualified, Clinton bashing, misogynistic little poser.

I own my vote. I will vote for who ever I choose to vote for whatever reason. And no pinheaded little troll on some blog is gonna change my mind.

Get over it pinheads, some us will never, ever support Obama.

I’d recommend putting some of these questions to a Washington Post reporter who just wrote an article on Obama rumors, and who is going on a chat live at 2:00 EDT today. Here’s the link for you to submit written questions. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/discussion/2008/06/30/DI2008063000360.html

I hope we can find out who owns Google. I think Bill Gates of Microsoft was tryinig to buy them. I know he supports Obama. I cannot believe how many in Hollywood are supporting Obama. I guess they are not as informed as many of us thought. They just listened to the hype and didn’t bother to do their own investigation. Of course, we small people (no disrespect meant) take it upon ourselves to become informed and find out about this snake oil salemen. Something didn’t sound right to me from the beginning. Obama stinks and so does the democratic party.

JP49, your statement “I guess they are not as informed as many of us thought.” is very ironic seeing that it is preceded by two uninformed statements.

“I hope we can find out who owns Google.” - anyone can find out by doing a quick search on the internet.

“I think Bill Gates of Microsoft was tryinig to buy them [Google].” - I think you’re confusing Google with Yahoo. Again, you could have found this out with a quick internet search.

Why should anyone listen to you when you’ve proven that it’s you who are uninformed?

Comment by imustprotest | 2008-06-30 14:15:53

why should anyone listen to an obamabot who calls him/herself: WTF

Comment by Jeremiah God Damn AmeriKKKa Wright | 2008-06-30 15:28:25

maybe WTF stands for Whitey Typical Female?

or it could stand for Waffle Time First.

Comment by MessyMarcy | 2008-06-30 16:57:14

who are uninformed?

Says the guy supporting a candidate who thinks there are 58 states and who can never seem to remember where he is at any given moment.

When Obama was in Unity, is it true that he said how happy he was to be in Upper Sandusky?

I wish these Obamabots would spend more time researching their chosen one and less time trying to curtail our rights to free speech.

You shouldn’t assume website vandals are politically motivated. I’ve lost count of the number of blogs and forums I’ve seen attacked over the years. Most didn’t have political themes. The people who do this stuff do it because it makes them feel empowered. They’re mostly mal-adjusted adolescents with anti-social tendencies. They just have computers instead of cans of spray-paint.

Comment by Jeremiah God Damn AmeriKKKa Wright | 2008-06-30 15:31:23

but sweetie the mal adjusted adolescents are part of the Obama Youth Movement…

And why attack pro hillary sites if you want to make a splash? Hillary is old news and is out of it as they say. If they were just mal adjusted and wanted to get a rise out of people why not attack america’s media Darling obama, that would get MAJOR MAJOR press coverage…just think!!

Yeah…see logic is a tough thing to avoid.

Often the simplest explanation is the right one.

Its obama trolls doing it.

So nice to see the Obama team updating the tactics utilized by Nixon’s dirty tricks campaign squad in 1972. Of course, Obama’s hit squad was born much later and don’t know and couldn’t possibly appreciate how they are carrying on the tradition of the only president forced to resign in disgrace. Two weeks ago marked the 35th anniversary of the Watergate break-in. Now, we have virtual break-ins, photo-shopped documents, spoofed emails and assorted other scams that the Nixon thugs couldn’t even have dreamed of. A lot of those guys wound up in jail. Like Nixon’s gang, Obama’s thugs are so cocky, they think they won’t be caught. They think they’re safe hiding behind phony names. But I can tell you that as someone who wrote the traning manual on internet crime fighting for the federal government, investigators can find them.

Comment by imustprotest | 2008-06-30 13:03:53

That’s comforting to hear except as someone commented simiarly on a previous thread…were putting those thugs in charge of the federal government. Are they going to investigate themselves?

Pen soldiers, are you worried over the safety of our country? Afraid that our powerful hand of strength may be shortened so that we will be unable to protect ourselves and preserve this beautiful America? Then listen to what the Obama’s presidency sounds like http://www.macsmind.com/wordpress/2008/02/27/obama-plans-to-disarm-america/

Our strength such as our military, and Nasa have made our country the world’s envy, yet, Mr. Obama wants to disarm us. In days of peril of perplexity, when the seeds of our loin have lost their faltering faith and our clergies have failed them, they cannot see the gathering storm that is in the horizon. It is up the faithful ones and their pens to awaken the slumber sleeping of the ones who love our country!

Comment by spiro | 2008-06-30 13:04:58

oops. make that the 36th anniversary of Watergate.

No, I’m not the crook who accepted cash payments under the table while vice president of the United States. Do you have something you’d like to add that’s revelant?

Comment by imustprotest | 2008-06-30 13:23:04

No, I know agnew died years ago, I wasn’t implying that you were THE Spiro T. Agnew. Just curious if that is your real name, and if not why did you choose it. The irony was all I was commenting on, sorry if I offended you.

The state of Hawaii has a legal basis to investigate and report on whether the birth certificate of Barack Hussein Obama II posted on his website is valid or not.
