PUMA vs. HOUND: The Acronym War

hound-puma-cartoon_web2.jpg

I like and respect Governor Ed Rendell of Pennsylvania. Few worked as diligently as he on behalf of Hillary Clinton.

Now he is reaching out to PUMA (“Party Unity My Ass”) members and those many other Democrats who feel disenfranchised and disillusioned but are not so anxious to wander back into the party they have grown to distrust. Governor Rendell implores PUMA members to join his new group, HOUND (Hillary-Obama-United-Not-Divided).

Rendell concedes that the Democratic Party’s nominating procedure and the caucus system are highly flawed and unfair and must be changed. This is good stuff, but many of the disaffected will believe it only when they see it fully implemented.

But then the good Governor falls sound asleep at the switch. The parting sentence of the HOUND credo is, “While the PUMA may be more swift and athletic, the HOUND is smarter and more perceptive.”

Governor Rendell would have been wise to do a little more research on hounds before embracing the acronym. Hounds are actually the least intelligent of dogs, ranking at the very bottom. I can attest to this first hand. My Russian Wolfhound (Borzoi) was a lovely creature, but dumb as a pumpkin.

And dogs, after all, are bred to follow the top dog’s orders.

Big cats, on the other hand, are not only swift and athletic. They are self-reliant, independent, resourceful, and answer to no one. Even domestic cats are crafty and show a strong will.

So, despite the acronym and image challenges, if the idea behind HOUND is to put a very intelligent dog up against a puma, Rendell’s group would be much better off with POODLE.

I’d love to set the tone of this as a discussion of the reasons why so many Democrats do not want to unify. What are your reasons for unifying–or not?
Do you think the Democrats will unify eventually and what would make that happen.

Since my last cartoon was hijacked by the first entry being about Larry Sinclair (and the cartoon was about sexism and uqual pay for women!) I am hoping this one will stick more to the topic at hand!

Thanks for any help here.

Comment by Dawnelle | 2008-07-02 22:11:33

we have 2 cats and one VERY smart border collie/husky mix (she’s brilliant like her owner, my daughter)

My cats are tired & old but VERY independent (not unlike their masters) Mom and I

gee how is it my life resembles my critters? LOL

no hounds or pumas (this is as close as we get) heh.

Comment by Zee | 2008-07-03 01:34:13

Well, I must take exception to your idea that hounds are stupid.

Some of them were bred to make decisions on their own.

They’re stinky, but I wouldn’t call them stupid.

Comment by splashy | 2008-07-03 05:31:29

I have been around many hounds that hunt in my area, and they are pretty much all nose and no brains.

There is a difference between the nose hounds and the sight hounds, though.

Comment by sjc-tx | 2008-07-03 09:48:41

No dog is stupid… only the way they are perceived… Often people confuse “stubborn” for stupid… (that is the genius of many dogs! ;-) ).

In any case I’d like to say to Gov Rendell et al… -> YOU can play party politics, but WE the people are VERY concerned about this country and supporting a VERY flawed and dangerous fool just because the party says to is just plain… well… STUPID. And as my 100 year old granny used to say… “We ain-a gonna do it” !

Love the cartoon, by the way.

I’m not going for Obama, unless Clinton is on the ticket, mainly because of the lack of universal health care in his policies. There are other things, but that is a deal-breaker for me.

Not voting for McCain, though. My state will go for McCain, likely, so I’m going for McKinney, or possibly Nader. I prefer their policies, and McKinney is a woman to boot, not to mention being black. She’s a trifecta IMHO.

I don’t want to unify with these idiots because of the vile sexist treatment the dnc condoned and promoted against hillary. this is the year women MUST make a statement against all sexist pigs…ones that work at the dnc, ones that work at the news organizations…and don’t let me forget those women, pelosi, brazile, cowbrain mccaskill who have absolutely NO decency or conviction. I will work against all of these folks till the bitter end….they MUST be held accountable and this behavior must NOT be tolerated.

Yea, women united supporting a man who called his *wife* a C^@T and a trollop in front of other people. Left his crippled wife who stood beside him the entire time he was a prisoner of war, for a younger girl and wants to take away reproductive rights.

Yea, that will show them to respect women, hear me roar!

Simply amazing ….

Comment by Steven Mather | 2008-07-03 10:32:22

Bill Ohio, the Obamabot, is that low form of scum that preys on victims to score his points. He misrepresents the mutuality and amiability of the divorce so he can exploit her tragedy for the Obama campaign’s political gain. She does not harbour ill feelings for her ex, who she said, concerning their falling out, was 40 going on 25.

Bill Ohio is among the lowest of the low. He should be treated accordingly.

Comment by Hillaryormccain08 | 2008-07-04 22:16:18

I would rather vote for him then for a man who lied on Hillary. He has managed to steal two elections from two strong women. He calls female reporters sweetie.
I am also sick of men using Roe vs Wade to try to frighten women. Well its established law and I am more afraid of what Obama will do to women’s rights then what McCain will do.
I am voting for McCain because Obama has constintly played the race card and is just flip flopping all over the place.
I am supposed to be upset because he called his wife c**t when Obama gave Hillary the finger and yes remember him playing I got 99 problems and the bitch ain’t one. Let’s see he made so many sexist remarks that it is hard to pick just one.

Comment by Susan | 2008-07-06 06:32:09

For a candidate who is trying to overcome “rumors” about many things, repeating rumors about other candidates doesn’t seem too swift.

Also, McCain divorced his first wife after coming home from war after 5 years - I’m sure this has never happened before! How many couples do you think will divorce after the spouse comes back from extended tours in Iraq? Plenty, I’m sure. Does this mean everyone who’s not still on the first marriage is unfit to run for office? Whether you support Obama or McCain (or neither), I would have though that after the Clinton years, democrats would have learned something. As far as I know, W is a faithful husband, and we all know what Bill did. Who was the better president in your estimation?

Comment by beebop | 2008-07-03 05:55:58

Pat:

I would caution against stirring up dog owners. I am not all that fond of cats. And I have owned three of them through the years. My delightful, rescued, formerly abused standard poodle is a terrific companion. I wouldn’t trade her and her loopy personality — a result of the teenaged boy who terrorized her — for any other creature.

Back off the anti-dog rhetoric. Ed isn’t making any inroads with this silly organization and I can tell you that service dogs, bomb sniffing dogs, military dogs, etc. are invaluable in their service. Is there an equivalent in the cat world? Don’t think so.

Comment by Pat Racimora | 2008-07-03 11:55:39

No offense really meant. I have dogs also, but I like cats. This was a fun post for me to do, even though the comments went a little wild (and some made me wince). There are over 200 of them as I am writing this.

In a sense, it is all about being careful when making little sound-bites–the whole message can go sideways. Rendell would have been better off leaving off that last sentence. That is what I had some fun with.

Comment by vonay | 2008-07-03 09:01:04

I doubt we will ever unify over this election because the candidate who won, did NOT get picked as our nominee.
You know, it wouldn’t have been so bad if the DNC had not given Obama all the undecided votes in Mi.

Having Nancy Polosi, Coward Dean and the rest of that sorry low down crowd turning a blind eye to the way Hillary was treated.

Turn Florida’s voters into half people… but noooo they had to steal 4 delegates from Hillary and gift wrap them for Obama; that totally pissed me off.

I don’t give a crap now. If George Bush was running again I would vote for him, just to get back at the DNC.

A women scorned?? You bet your ass I am.
Soooo DNC, as Donna Brazill and the rest of you are saying,

get over it… PUMA

Comment by Bill Ohio | 2008-07-03 09:53:03

Define Win.

Last I checked it was a delegate race, if that is correct the nominee WON.

Unless you changed the rules and I didn’t notice.

Comment by kenoshaMarge | 2008-07-03 09:12:49

The difference Ed Rendell needs to see is that PUMA is a true grassroots movement and his pathetic HOUND is a PR stunt from a politician.

And Ed, much as I like you, and I do, it’s just not very smart to tell the folks you are trying to convince to join you that they aren’t as smart as you are. Cause some folks might take issue with that. Might be a little sensitive to name-calling since the Obamacrats have done it so incessantly to Senator Clinton’s supporters worse than any freeper ever did.

Comment by DAB | 2008-07-03 12:21:22

I agree - first they’ll get over it by November, they’ll come around, then we’ll fix what went wrong next election, then we’re smarter than you are.

Way to go, Dems - keep up the insults - I’m sure you’ll make us united — against Obama, that is….

And Undercover Black Man illustrates another reason unity is not happening. Dean, Brazile, et al., have to all appearances succeeded in stealing the nomination for Obama; but instead of being an even slightly gracious winner, he’s still sending out the trolls to annoy us.

I realize he subscribes to some belief that says you should try to belittle and intimidate your opponent as much as possible, but since he was losing handily in almost every contest toward the end of the selection process, I would think he might reconsider the use of such tactics if he really wants to unify the party.

Since I want him to lose, however, I hope he continues on with his present methods.

Good job, Undercover Black Man!

Keep up the flip-flopping, Obama. This is identity politics, and you are running out of groups you haven’t insulted yet. You will have to resort to insulting your own base - with more flip-flops life NAFTA, FISA, etc.

Comment by Sprout | 2008-07-03 05:14:25

ROFLMAO
your “command”???? You don’t COMMAND anything of a PUMA, they ignore you and mock you (and might just eat YOU). You must be thinking of your “hounds” again. They’re dumb enough to do what their master tells them because they can’t think for themselves.
We will never be “hounds” because we don’t need a master, we have freedom, dignity and a sharp set of claws.
Hounds follow their human masters, PUMAs strike fear in their hearts.
Big cats eat their young only if there is a serious defect in the young, such as wanting to go play with hounds or something.
PUMA!

Comment by Bella | 2008-07-03 06:38:55

You know, I wish this wouldn’t have turned into a cat vs dog thing. Not all Hillary peeps are cat lovers, plus pounding fists on chests like cats are oh so much better is so lame. I don’t like cats personally and am a dog owner. I lurve my two huskies that need a master, lack freedom and dignity. There is nothing quite like their unconditional love.

Comment by Susan | 2008-07-06 06:48:08

I love both - we currently have a dog and a cat (our 3rd dog and 3rd cat since we married), and as much as we love them both, I have to say that the cats just seem smarter. Of course, alot of that has to do with the fact that the dogs are so loyal they will do anything for you, whereas the cats always do what’s best for them.

As a typical white woman, I own multiple cats. I read on a thread somewhere that someone said that getting the Clinton supporters to fall in line was like herding cats (implying that it is impossible).

I know how to herd my cats - by giving them what they want. All I have to do is open a can of cat food and they all come running.

All they needed to do to get Clinton supporters rounded up was to give us what we wanted - Hillary Clinton as the Democratic nominee.

How simple would that have been.

Comment by Johnny at Work | 2008-07-02 22:28:26

They just ignored little things like caucus fraud and Obama being awarded delegates he didn’t earn and given some of Hillary’s as well. Obama is illegit. You know it and I know.

Poor Sod.

Comment by UKforDems | 2008-07-03 02:16:06

It was a delegate race - not a popular vote race, something the Clinton campaign loudly proclaimed at the start. However what was the popular vote?

Popular Vote Total
Obama 17,535,458 48.1%
Clinton 17,493,836 48.0%

Comment by Bella | 2008-07-03 06:44:39

Oh that’s right, they like to cheat. Just like they stole delegates from Hillary, they now make up vote totals in a couple caucus states.

Comment by Sprout | 2008-07-03 05:21:47

My Republican friends who were planning on voting for Hillary in November are as pissed off as the former democratic supporters of Hillary. I don’t know how large this group is — but I suspect that it large enough to have given Hillary a landslide in November.

There is not a chance that these friends would ever think of voting for Obama — and NO they are not racist. They believe that Obama is completely unqualified and inadequate for the job.

I do believe that Obama is a uniter — the moderates Republicans and the moderate Democrats are ready for a new party.

I don’t think so. I think Republicans will turn out to vote for McCain (the ones I know detest Obama even more than they do McCain), and that, plus the independents and disaffected Dems will keep Obama from winning. It’s weird to be on the same side as groups like Fox News and the NRA, but I figure by the time they get through with Obama, not even Granny will be voting for him.

Comment by jadwiga | 2008-07-03 00:00:11

I just read on Yahoo that the evangelical leaders had a meeting and decided to unite behind McCain. They don’t like him very much, but Obama would be a terrible alternative. One of them said that only those evangelicals will vote for Obama who didn’t read their Bible.
Unfortunately the article is gone now and I can’t find it.

I will never vote for Obama, and it is very likely that I will vote against Blanche Lambert Lincoln since she chose to so quickly become a member of the Lady Senators for Obama (or is it Girl Senators for Obama, I forget).

I was able to continue to be a Democrat after the Clarence Thomas spectacle of watching Democrats stand idly by while Anita Hill was savaged by Thomas supporters, but I convinced myself it was more ignorance than malice on their part.

There is no mistaking what the treatment of Hillary Clinton and her campaign was, however. It was raw and evil misogyny; it was the political equivalent of the rape and murder of her campaign. To vote for Obama would be a message to the party that we women are okay with that. I could not believe that Michelle Obama had the audacity to make the statement that Hillary had to take the hits so her (Michelle’s) daughters wouldn’t have to. The truth is that Michelle herself landed a lot of those hits, and if such behavior is allowed to stand, it will have set women’s rights back about forty years.

I believe that now is the time, and this is the election to send a message to the party that we will not tolerate this. I think I would still abstain from voting for Obama even if he were qualified to be President because this issue is of such importance — half the electorate has just been shown by the Democratic Party that they are second class members of the Party. But since I truly believe Obama is about as qualified as my old, dumb hound (he gets by on his good looks and personality, so he’s still better off than Obama), I am voting for McCain. He is not the person I hoped to see become President, but he at least has during his life demonstrated some integrity and ability to work toward and accomplish some worthwhile goals, not just use his position to enrich criminal friends.

When he addressed the DNC, I was really impressed by him. I think they tapped him way too soon. He hasn’t matured yet, he hasn’t developed his own style and ideas yet, he’s hasn’t shown a shred of good judgment or character and this campaign has destroyed his political career.
The DNC took a young black man that had potential and put him into a race before he was ready and essentially destroyed him and his chance to ever hold office again after he is soundly defeated due to his lack of experience and poor choices.
In 8 to 12 years, he may have gained the experience and judgement if he took on a mentor and actually worked hard to learn the many things he has no clue about, but they wanted him “fresh” and “new”. The DNC put him where he is before he was ready. They did a great disservice to him, to us, to the party and the country.
In essence, the DNC handed this election, that we had wrapped up in a nice little gift box signed by dumbya, to John McCain out of their own stupidity, greed and arrogance.
To hell with the democratic party as it is. PUMAs will rebuild the REAL democratic party or will re-form the party with a new name, but we will not be part of that broke-ass system that has been run into the ground by the party elitists.

For me this is really about salvaging the Democratic party. They aren’t much but they’re all we’ve got. It has been difficult to see how easily they have been thoroughly corrupted (they’ve always been corrupt of course, but not THIS corrupt).

If they are stripped of all meaning and turned into a personality cult built around who ever can produce the most campaign cash then they are worthless. The center of this cult possesses no belief and is just a con-man no better than Bush. Is the fate of the Democratic party to be the same as the Republicans in 2000 - to be hijacked by persons unknown?

The room needs to be aired out, the house cleaned. The Democratic party still has some purpose, even if it’s ‘leaders’ have none. It’s worth saving and to do that they (the Dems) are going to have to be slapped down HARD, so hard that they won’t forget it for quite some time.

The Democratic Party is going in a direction I can not, will not go. How am I to just forget all I know about Obama? His associates, his non-existent legislative record, his flip flopping? I can not condone the vote rigging, the ‘rulz’ fixing, the selection of a nominee in direct contravention of the will of the people. (shut up trolls- you want to explain to me how Kerry and Kennedy went Obama when their constituents, my family and friends, CLEARLY and OVERWHELMINGLY voted Hillary?)

Nope, I don’t see the party Unifying any time soon. We need to vote every bloody one of them out of office and send a very clear message that WE, THE PEOPLE, are their employers.

Comment by Johnny at Work | 2008-07-02 22:39:39

“it is about integrity, principles, honor”….

It’s funny you should mention those, because those are just a few of the traits all NAVY and MARINE Officers are rated on from the day they are recruited to the day they retire.

You can’t get to the position McCain had in the NAVY without those character traits, no matter who your daddy is.

Weseley Clark knows that, and is pure scum for attacking McCain on it.

Comment by dose | 2008-07-02 22:46:16

Well according to you a only a person with integrity and principles can achieve a high rank in the military, you then point to mcsame to validate your point and say it doesn’t matter who is dad was. So please explain to me how Clark became a 4 star general if he is pure scum. Either you are wrong about the fact that only a person of integrity can succed in the armed forces or you are wrong about Clark being scum. You can’t have it both ways. Why don’t you people ever think before spouting some ridiculous bullshit.

Comment by Johnny at Work | 2008-07-02 23:03:04

Clark is ARMY ASSHOLE….

But even still, he had principles, until he beacame a politician. And now he has sold his soul by trashing the Officer Corps.

That is not BOTH WAYS. Clark may have been a great Officer, but he is a shit politician.

You on the otherhand must know something about BOTH WAYS, because you seem to love getting it in the ASS from Obama.

Comment by Northwest rain | 2008-07-03 05:05:55

Clark is Army — McCain is Navy.

As a Navy brat we learned that Army officers were not too bright. Then the Army didn’t much like the Navy.

It could be just an Army-Navy thing — that got aired in public.

Or it could be that Clark is a PUMA — and he was not about to be Obama’s running mate.

Who knows what the hell is going on in the background? The democrat party is dead — and the ghouls are fighting over the remains.

Comment by JozefAL | 2008-07-02 23:37:13

And what exactly has St Baracky done to prevent the swift rise in gas prices since the Dems got to organize the Senate?
According to this article (http://money.cnn.com/2006/11/19/markets/lundberg_gasprices/index.htm ), the average price for a gallon of gas was $2.18 on November 3, 2006 (4 days before the Dems won control of Congress).
According to this article (http://money.cnn.com/2008/07/02/news/economy/gas_price_poll/index.htm ), the average price for a gallon of gas was $4.09 as of July 2, 2008. For the math-challenged Obamabots, that’s an 87.6% increase in 20 months (for 18 of those months, Sen Obama has been part of the Senate’s “majority”).
Even more disturbing is that, as of November 5, 2007 (according to http://blogs.consumerreports.org/cars/2007/11/us-gas-pricesno.html ), the average price of a gallon of gas was $3.01! That makes for a 35.9% increase in just 8 months, and it also means that of the $1.91 overall increase in the last 20 months, $1.08 of it (or 56.5%) has come in just the last 8 months.
If one wanted to be really facetious, one could make a claim that Barack Obama’s candidacy has been responsible for the high gas prices and an Obama Presidency would be even worse for the average American.
So, “dose”, you wanna tell us how McCain (who is part of the Senate minority) is worse for gas prices or you just wanna go back to your Obamasters and get your NEW talking points?

Comment by MessyMarcy | 2008-07-02 23:43:07

Obama is much more likely than McCain to be the pawn of the corporate interests that have brought us such high prices on things like gas and milk. Every decision he has ever made and ever would make is designed to benefit the Exelons, Rezkos, Auchis, Ayerses, and the other corporate/terrorist/criminal organizations and people who control him.

An Obama administration would be Bush on steroids.

The Democrats need to show a little personal responsibility.

Comment by Sprout | 2008-07-03 05:56:40

Better than having milk at $20 a gallon and gas unavailable or at $50 a gallon.
When our economic depression finally comes to an end and we come out on the other side, we won’t have made it through on “hope” and “change”, we will have made it through on hard work, sweat and a lot of tears.
Obamabots can get used to crying, they’re going to be doing it for a long time to come. Either 2 years of depression with McCain or 20 years of it after obama makes things even worse than they are.
The only chance we had to avoid a depression was elbowed out of the race to make way for the “messiah” that turned out to be nothing but a flea bag basset hound.

Pat,

I love you artwork and insights.

I think that many PUMA’s did their research during the primary and determined that Obama does not walk his talk, he is a typical politician with no history as to really know or understand who he really is.

Not really knowing who he is and what he really stands for is a tremendous problem for me. His past associations, contrary position statements and lack of forthrightness when he is questioned about an associate or past positions on issues (avoidance behaviors with voting present) really decimate his credibility with me.

Now that he is the presumptive nominee, he has practically become a Republican with his reversals on issues. That makes me wonder what “changes” we will see if he is actually elected POTUS. That concerns me greatly.

I think, many of the charges he or his surrogates laid at Hillary’s door is, in fact, what is wrong with him…

He is divisive, will say anything to win, is not trust worthy (liar), flip flops, surrounds himself with questionable people, is a racist, and has high negatives.

That list is only the beginning of his problems with me.

How much courage did that take? Not that I think you really could care less about my cat taking a dump and getting attacked by a coyote, but I thought I would share my personal story with you, because I have a pre-existing condition that relates to being mentally ill, and I can’t afford health care, and we like to share our stories with those who could give a “crap” about us. I’m sooooo glad you let us know this as I was starting to sing everything to the tune of the meow mix song!!

Oh wait, we understand the concept of an allegory and we know what a simile is. Nevermind, false alarm. We knew the whole time we were still human. Whew, that was a close one. Somebody musta slipped some kool-aid in my coffee when I wasn’t looking and I almost zoinked out like a bamabot.

I wonder if this guy/gal is dumb enough to realize how stupid he/she really is or if he actually believes we are sitting here in cat costumes, licking our “paws” and actually using a litter box instead of our toilets? I bet he actually thinks we are dressing up as cats and meowing, that’s the limit of imagination and intelligence the kool-aid drinkers have.
FYI, “kool-aid” is an allegory as well, we know you aren’t mixing up batches of the actual powdered drink mix (but then again, maybe you are). It’s a “figure of speech”. Google it if you need to “sweetie”.

In recent months, according to the Iranian media, there has been a surge in violence in Iran; it is impossible at this early stage, however, to credit JSOC or C.I.A. activities, or to assess their impact on the Iranian leadership. The Iranian press reports are being carefully monitored by retired Air Force Colonel Sam Gardiner, who has taught strategy at the National War College and now conducts war games centered on Iran for the federal government, think tanks, and universities. The Iranian press “is very open in describing the killings going on inside the country,” Gardiner said. It is, he said, “a controlled press, which makes it more important that it publishes these things. We begin to see inside the government.” He added, “Hardly a day goes by now we don’t see a clash somewhere. There were three or four incidents over a recent weekend, and the Iranians are even naming the Revolutionary Guard officers who have been killed.”

Hard to try and win with any sense of moral high ground. If you have to go through the ditch to win it, you’re still covered in shit. So much for the terra war.

Earlier this year, a militant Ahwazi group claimed to have assassinated a Revolutionary Guard colonel, and the Iranian government acknowledged that an explosion in a cultural center in Shiraz, in the southern part of the country, which killed at least twelve people and injured more than two hundred, had been a terrorist act and not, as it earlier insisted, an accident. It could not be learned whether there has been American involvement in any specific incident in Iran, but, according to Gardiner, the Iranians have begun publicly blaming the U.S., Great Britain, and, more recently, the C.I.A. for some incidents.

The law of unintended consequences applies to such tactics. Much like trying to campaign on the use of the lowest common denominator, etc.

“This is the ultimate for the Iranians—to blame the C.I.A.,” Gardiner said. “This is new, and it’s an escalation—a ratcheting up of tensions. It rallies support for the regime and shows the people that there is a continuing threat from the ‘Great Satan.’ ”

Somewhere an Iranian Shaun Hannity flogs self in ecstasy at the thought of being able to further vilify Americans because of their leadership, or lack thereof.

In Gardiner’s view, the violence, rather than weakening Iran’s religious government, may generate support for it.

Since when does reality and true pragmatism play a role in our policy? This Gardiner person acts like there’s consequences to things we set in motion. Maybe he didn’t get the memo from Cheney….

My worry is that McCain isn’t right enough for the rebugs. They are lukewarm about him. That’s why Ohblamas recent right turns (panders) concern me. I think if he moves a little right of McCain and if the repugs don’t finance enough, or even much in 527s Obama has a clear shot at the WH. Now, if PUMAS move McCain to make up for lower repug votes, McCain will have a better chance. Also, this would push McCain and the republican party more to the center, which there is some noise from the younger repugs to do anyway.

lord knows the tv media won’t cover it

He’d be trading the empty suit for the pant suit and the pant suit fights back.

I doubt the evangelicals would ever back Obama knowing that he was a member of Wright’s church for 20 years.

Conservative evangelicals discuss backing McCain

Conservative evangelical leaders met privately this week to discuss putting aside their misgivings about John McCain and coalescing around the Republican’s presidential bid while urging him to consider social conservative favorite Mike Huckabee as a running mate.

About 90 of the movement’s leading activists gathered Tuesday night in Denver for a meeting convened by Mathew Staver, who heads the Florida-based legal advocacy group Liberty Counsel.

Many evangelical leaders backed other GOP candidates early on and remain wary of McCain’s commitment to their causes and his previous criticisms of movement leaders. But with the presidential field now set, many evangelical leaders are taking a more pragmatic view, realizing also that the Democratic candidate, Barack Obama, is making a strong play for evangelical voters and talking freely about his faith.

Obama maid a very stategic mistake by going goo goo for Faith Based initiatives. His FAITH and CHURCH are the two biggest drags on his candidacy, and he just put them on stage with multiple spotlights.

I can’t wait to see the Repubs play that over and over, showing your tax dollars flowing to TUCC, Jeremiah Wright, and Lois Farrakhan so he can “rehabilitate” criminals.

Oh yeah every voter, especially EVANGELICALS are going to love O’boy for that… NOT.

Comment by imustprotest | 2008-07-02 23:07:18

I don’t think Obama’s going to gain a lot of Evangelical votes but he may get some votes from more moderate republicans in the red states by pandering to the evangelicals. He makes the more moderate red state folks more comfy cozy with him. Also, he puts more money into the state to force the down ticket repubs to spend more, work harder, less time and money to help Johnny. PUMAS could perhaps offset any gains Obama gets in these states.

Comment by Sprout | 2008-07-03 06:27:18

The reason that dog is “man’s best friend” is because just like men, we put up with them no matter how stupid they are because they’re just too pathetic to kick to the curb.
Obama would have to be one of those inbred greyhounds good for nothing but chasing a plastic rabbit around a track, finding out it was fake, and then ready to do it again because it forgot it was duped 5 minutes ago.
Dogs are loyal, always happy to see you, easy to control, but dumb as rocks.
Cats tolerate us being in their world as long as we bend to their will and do what they tell us.

Many of the activities may be being carried out by dissidents in Iran, and not by Americans in the field. One problem with “passing money” (to use the term of the person familiar with the Finding) in a covert setting is that it is hard to control where the money goes and whom it benefits.

Hello, Manucher Ghorbanifar.
And to think the current wave of crime is using drug smugglers for Heroin along the Spice Road. Much like you did as a middle man for the Iran/Contra cash days that you dealt arms to Iran and Iraq.

Say “Hi” to Mike Ledeen for US, literally. Think maybe the seven billion his daughter lost in the IPA cash handouts found its way to you friends in the smuggling networks? Perhaps Denny Hastert’s memory needs to be refreshed also….

wonder how much the World Bank is laundering it as well. Think Jack Abramoff’s portfolio has any friends working staging points for these items back through Asia? Marcos is gone, but the Marianna Islands are along the way, someone has to be the fueling point between here and there.

Comment by Terrig | 2008-07-02 22:54:03

The DNC has become corrupt, I was raised that only republicans acted this way. This was the year they should have taken back the WH. They have broken the rules, paid off super-delegates and threatened the super-delegates that stood by Hillary. They have discounted their base for someone that is not qualified. If they were smart they would have BHO as the VP and Hillary as Pres. This would have given them the White House for 16 years. They don’t deserve to win. The media has not been doing their jobs the only real news is on sites like this and Jon Stewart Comedy Central, how sad is that? This will be the first time in my life I will vote republican. I will vote country over party.

Love your cartoons, Pat! Here are the things I need to see for me to be a happy Democrat again:

Donna Brazile out of the DNC and off the air.

Howard Dean out of the DNC.

The DNC only in DC, no one in Chicago.

DNC rules restored to pre-2007 but caucuses eliminated.

All pledged delegates won by Hillary in MI and FL given to her in full.

Hillary as our nominee.

Nancy Pelosi no longer speaker.

There should be no room in the party for misogyny and sexism or for the use of the race card against good Democrats.

Comment by Sprout | 2008-07-03 06:34:27

Good list.
Pelosi has been the biggest disappointment we have had up until obama showing up.
Brazille is an affirmative action hire by CNN.
The “Dean Scream” is going to be repeated, this time by the voters.
We need the corruption purged from the party. Until then, there’s no difference in the two parties.

I honestly believe, this could be the catalyst to create a viable 3rd party. There are many things the left and right have in common and those who are upset on both sides are closer than they think. It may be time for all of us who are disaffected with either party to unite behind a Hillary/Huckabee ticket and change the face of the election. I think they’d actually make a pretty good team.

Comment by kgirl1028 | 2008-07-03 01:11:23

Ok on this i must digress on hounds being the dumbest dogs. I own two dachshunds, members of the hound class, and my biggest problem is that they are too smart. My youngest is 3 and can go from ground/floor, to chair, to table top and back down with the agile grace of a cat. and has no idea that he weighs less than 15lbs. My parents put up a fence around their garden to keep him from getting in only to see him scale and hop over it. So while a PUMA would probably rip him a new one, those two would give that kitty one hell of a fight.

Comment by Zee | 2008-07-03 01:59:55

This is true…I put my hound defense up higher on the thread…it’s because I’ve always had dachshunds.

They were bred to make their own decisions. They are smart and stubborn and were also bred to pull large fierce creatures out of their dens, and would spend days fighting to do so, out of sight of their owners.

They’re, um, not known to be obedient, therefore.

Mine yelps in sheer indignation when a cat wanders on our property….but he knows not to tangle with it.

Might as well ignore him.

Comment by Gary McGowan | 2008-07-03 04:01:58

Rendell is being herded and cornered like almost everyone else, including most governors trying to look out for their states. PPPs, toll roads, casinos…

Check out the Constitution re how money is SUPPOSED TO BE created and then compare it to the central bank crap that is taking us to a very big disaster. FDR understood this, although circumstances didn’t permit him to get to the core of it.

Give him a (sane) capital federal budget and he’s free to take care of his state. He’s said so himself.

Try herding REAL pumas.

Hmm, I’m thinking that if he knows rural people, and he knows those that voted for Clinton, then he knows they know that most hounds are pretty stupid, all nose and no brains. It could really be a joke, at the expense of those that back Obama.

Now, the urban folks that voted for Obama just might not know about that, so they wouldn’t get the joke.

Could that be? If so, it’s a shout out at the Clinton backers, telling them that he really doesn’t want them to give in to Obama, without being obvious.

Just speculatin’…

Comment by Hillaryormccain08 | 2008-07-04 23:02:13

Actually I am thinking along the same line. I am a tad bit suspecis of some things. Remember he really campaigned his ass off for her. He is my Gov. He is completely loyal to the Clintons. I just am not sure he is unifying. He picked the Hounds which I think makes Obama look like a fool. I just wonder how many Clinton people are really playing the Unity game.

In all of the time I have been a reader and left comments at NQ I found this thread the most disappointing.

I did encounter culturally ingrained racial stereo types and needless childish taunts using “poop” as the basis. Maybe it was the time of day that it was posted, but some of the comments were way off base and out of line, not just as dialogue, but in context. Some of the screen names I saw connected to this garbage surprised the heck out of me.

I don’t quibble with political cartoons. I find them extremely useful, but this one missed its mark. If this is where we are in our fight for Democracy, we are losing.

Comment by fdrjim | 2008-07-03 10:39:35

Why unify? If we do then we tell the DNC that what occurred throughout this election cycle is OK. This is not just about dissatisfaction with Obama, it is a horribly flawed process- in fact, the process was highjacked - it was rigged. PUMA- http://www.iownmyvote.com

Comment by DAB | 2008-07-03 12:34:02

I can’t count the number of times that I sent logically constructed e-mails and snail mail letters to powerful Dems during the Primary season. They pointed out process problems and told them that they were asking for trouble on down the road. Of course I was completely ignored, but NOW they are worried — NOW that it is too late to fix anything.

They obviously wanted to be rid of those pesky Clintons once and for all and desperately tried to ignore the rising chorus of anger. Get over it Democratic Party, it is way too late to come together and unite — you are reaping exactly what you have sown.

Which part of NOBama, do they NOT understand ? !

Comment by Gina | 2008-07-27 14:27:03

THE PUMAS ARE TOTALLY JUSTIFIED …

1. Contrary to what Obamabots say …
Obama and Hillary were in a dead heat,
when the DNC pressured Hillary into not
only conceding, but campaigning for Obama.
2. Obama is once again in a dead heat, but now
with McCain, even though Obamabots act like
Obama has already won (like they did in the
primaries against Hillary). So, this means that
half of the Democrats, and all the Republicans
(3/4 of America) dIdn’t want Obama. Plus, he
didn’t even win the popular vote, and refused a
revote in Michigan and Florida.
3. Obama has the thinnest resume in politics, and
he won state legislature and Senator by
disqualifications of his opponents, not by earned
experience, or votes.
4. Obama’s one claim to fame is being a community
organizer, where he boasts of registering voters.
Then he took their votes away from them, by
disqualifying his opponents on technicalities, prior
to the election.
5. Obama’s mentor of 20 years, was an anti-American
racist … not to mention other unsavory associations.
6. Obama is simply buying the election, since he’s
good at fund raising … hardly a qualification to be
President of the United States.
7. The media never vetted Obama, and they are
giving him a free ride, plus more than twice the
print and air time as McCain, as they did against
Hillary.
8. 90% of blacks are voting for Obama, because he is
black, while the campaign gained ground by
accusing most opponents of racism.
9. Obamabots were, and are extremely nasty and sarcastic
towards Hillary supporters, as well as McCain supporters.

Comment by Madmariner | 2008-08-23 21:17:22

Get over it, folks. Obama won the nomination based on the rules that Clinton agreed to (until they did not serve her ambitions). Either of the two would make a better president than McCain, but you all are becoming Nader II. Thanks all, and enjoy the next 4 years of McBush. You deserve it.
