What or Who is Obama’s Base?

I think the potential “new” Democratic base is becoming clear at last. Or at least the base for the GE. Whether Obama would run from this base like he has from the one he used to win the Democratic nomination (presumptive), remains to be seen. But let’s look at what we got, shall we?

1) A fascinating piece by David Brooks at the NYT includes information about some of Obama’s heaviest donors, not by individual, but by class and work sector. He sees some interesting trends.

Read the rest ->

Brooks discusses the breakdown of Obama’s supporters, contrasting that with the campaign’s constant assertions of the “low donation supporter” as if they are merely processing $5, $10 and $25 checks from the “little guys.” Based on information at opensecrets.org, Brooks finds the following:

As in other recent campaigns, lawyers account for the biggest chunk of Democratic donations. They have donated about $18 million to Obama, compared with about $5 million to John McCain, according to data released on June 2 and available at OpenSecrets.org.

People who work at securities and investment companies have given Obama about $8 million, compared with $4.5 for McCain. People who work in communications and electronics have given Obama about $10 million, compared with $2 million for McCain. Professors and other people who work in education have given Obama roughly $7 million, compared with $700,000 for McCain.

Real estate professionals have given Obama $5 million, compared with $4 million for McCain. Medical professionals have given Obama $7 million, compared with $3 million for McCain. Commercial bankers have given Obama $1.6 million, compared with $1.2 million for McCain. Hedge fund and private equity managers have given Obama about $1.6 million, compared with $850,000 for McCain.

When you break it out by individual companies, you find that employees of Goldman Sachs gave more to Obama than workers of any other employer. The Goldman Sachs geniuses are followed by employees of the University of California, UBS, JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup, National Amusements, Lehman Brothers, Harvard and Google. At many of these workplaces, Obama has a three- or four-to-one fund-raising advantage over McCain.

Brooks notes that all the heavy donors are all highly educated. It is also apparent that these donors are “information economy” professionals for the most part. Brooks ends with this:

If the Democrats are elected, this highly educated class will have much more say over policy than during the campaign. Undecided voters sway campaigns, but in government, elites generally run things. Once the Republicans are vanquished, I wouldn’t hold your breath waiting for that capital gains tax hike or serious measures to expand unionization.

Interesting. Remember when George Bush told a bunch of millionaires that they were HIS BASE? Well, perhaps change some of the industries, from coal and oil to information management and finance and you’ve got the same thing. Also note what these sectors don’t typically represent: blue collar workers, low income workers and/or manufacturing industries like the auto industry.

2) The Independent has an interesting, and more objective piece about Obama than you’ll find at most MSM sites. Dominic Lawson writes about Obama’s many flips between the “good” Obama and the evil twin Baricky. It’s definitely worth a read.

Lawson starts out with a passage from The Audacity of Hope:

“I find comfort in the fact that the longer I’m in politics the less nourishing popularity becomes, that a striving for rank and fame seems to betray a poverty of ambition, and that I am answerable mainly to the steady gaze of my own conscience.”

Thus spake Barack Obama. These words appear at the conclusion of the chapter entitled “Politics” in Obama’s 2006 book The Audacity of Hope. They also sum up much of what we now know about Obama: a man of stunning articulacy, but also stunning self-regard.

Lawson goes on to detail the many position switches Obama has managed in the brief time since the primary season more or less ended.

Those who actually supported Obama during this [primary] process now divide neatly, if unevenly, into two groups. The first, smaller, group is full of buyer’s remorse. The blogosphere is hissing like a catherine wheel with their anger with Obama, obviously, but above all with themselves. The second, much bigger group, continues to buy Obama’s story. They argue that everything and anything is justified if it helps to get a Democrat back in the White House; some of them add that “of course” Obama doesn’t believe any of the things he is now saying to woo the “redneck states” and that once in the White House he will revert to his “true beliefs”.

To this group we must address a simple question. How do you know what Obama really believes in, other than his own destiny – and, of course, his conscience?

An excellent question. And I don’t think anyone has a clue. But here’s the thing.

*While claiming to raise most of his funds from “small donors,” Obama has actually raised most of his money from wealthy donors of the “information age” elites. Just whose interests will he look after here?

*He has ruthlessly switched positions on many hot-button items of importance to traditional Democrats who got him to where he is now (see NAFTA, FISA, public campaign financing, and others). Just which direction on any of these will he ultimately go?

* Then he drops the f-bomb on his supposed base: the proposal to keep the faith-based policy of GWB. Is this a ruse? Will he do this or is it just a way of getting evangelicals to vote for him?

* Obama has discarded many friends of long standing, some who probably helped him on his way up. Is Obama the kind of man who easily drops long-term relationships or is it the new friends who won’t last in his organization?

So, three questions:

1. WHO is Obama?
2. WHO is his real BASE?

and, perhaps most importantly,

3. HOW will we be able to tell?

There never was any question as to who his base was - yet the illiterate who are the Obamazombies are the ones who defend him to the hilt.

What I don’t understand is WHY these low-level, ‘average’ Democrats who are supposedly always questioning everything, have never questioned Obama?

Again, it reminds me of the Bushbots. Scary, really.

They don’t want to be called racists, and that is part of the reason why BaJoke was picked by the George Soroses of the world: You can always play the race card while concomitantly feeling good while playing what Thomas Sowell calls “mascot politics” by running on the ‘first AA president’ theme.

Excellent work by you on this piece, LisaB. This saves many of us from having to read more of Brooks’ drivel. Wow, David Brooks will look at some incredibly basic statistics and try to divine for us all some larger meaning. Who knew, Bobo?

Comment by Annie Oakley | 2008-07-02 17:59:08

I’d like a party that ran the most qualified people for the ticket. If they turn out to be female or black or Asian or Latino or old or handicapped - then that would be fine for us all to congratulate ourselves on not letting those differences stop us from electing the best. It just seems like the cart has been put before the horse: Let’s elect an AA because he’s AA. Fine with me if you can show he’s the most qualified, but otherwise it’s affirmative action at its worst. . Hillary was qualified. She happened to be female. I would never have gone along with electing her just because she’s female.

Comment by Hope Floats | 2008-07-03 09:17:54

And there you have it. Hillary ran on her many qualifications. Obama ran on Hope and Change.

One was proud of her historic run. Another has constantly warned “they will try to paint me as a scary black man.” Only one of these ran on a true message of Hope, and I’ll give you a clue. Her husband was the Original Man From Hope. I’m very inspired by her bid for the presidency.

Claiming that someone who was top of the law class at Harvard is an affirmative action candidate is so beyond stupid, it is laughable. Go on say what you really mean - there are enough on here who would love to don a white sheet for the night.

Tell that crap to the poor Black people who went without heat in the housing units in Obama’s district, while his rich sponsors who were in charge of turning ON that heat ran off with all the federal funds.

It appears that Obama is the racist.

Comment by s. hall | 2008-07-02 21:15:52

jr — the reason Obama fails so miserably without his teleprompter is because he’s afraid to say where he really stands. He knows that would finish him.

Where the hell did you get that one UK? In what alternative kool-aid drinking universe was Obama at the top of his class at Harvard Law? HA! Talk to the people who were there! He never published. He never clerked for a judge. He has refused to release his grades and we all know the selection process for editor of the law review was not based on grades the year he was “selected”.
I keep seeing a pattern here. Nobama keeps getting “selected” for president on qualities other than merit. No wonder he keeps inflating his biography.

Comment by mahaska | 2008-07-02 21:28:10

In fact, people had trouble figuring out why he get on the Law Review since the editor usually comes from the top 2% of students.

Top of the class??? White sheets??? You’ve got quite an imagination there.

Why is it that BO’s supporters can never support him? All they can do is call people who don’t support him racist and attack the other candidate.

The ‘new’ politics bares a striking similarity to the old ones.

Comment by Jules | 2008-07-02 20:24:40

What is laughable is that someone is running with 2 years of experience in the Senate. Don’t know where you work, but would you expect to be qualified to run your company after working there for two years? And Obama somehow has such an ego that he thinks he’s qualified to run the entire country after two years? Obama may be qualified one day WHEN HE HAS EXPERIENCE. Right now, no way.

Comment by educatedwhitewoman | 2008-07-03 08:53:27

Better do some research and quit spouting Obama myths. He wasn’t at the top of his class; he was the first affirmative action editor (not selected on merit) of the HLR, and he never wrote a single article for the review. After Obama’s lackluster performance, they changed the rules at HLR, adding the requirement that editors actually write articles!

Comment by Hope Floats | 2008-07-03 09:21:36

Graduating MCL from Harvard qualifies him for the Senate not the White House. Obama continues flunking on the actual test for experience. He gives the wrong answers on UHC, Iraq, Iran, etc. He is not ready to be President.

She’s just a “token.” If that were true, where are all the other strong, brilliant, experienced, and compassionate women candidates? Hillary is exceptional, not a “mascot.”

And p.s. being “different” whether it’s a woman or a minority is not a qualification to be president. That’s the problem here. Since when did knowledge and experience become secondary criteria? Oh yea, with Reagan and then Bush. Now we have Obambi.

Many of the most progressive Supreme Court decisions protecting individual liberties were all written by Republicans justices appointed by Republican presidents. Here’s a sample.

Boumediene v. Bush granting habeas corpus rights to non-uniformed enemy combatants captured on the field of battle was written for the majority by a Republican, Anthony Kennedy, appointed by Ronald Reagan.

Romer v. Evans, invalidating laws denying gays the right to bring local discrimination claims is another Kennedy decision.

Lawrence v. Texas, invalidating criminal prohibitions against private sexual acts between consenting gay adults is yet another Kennedy decision.

Planned Parenthood v. Casey re-affirming the Roe v. Wade decision recognizing the right to abortion was written by Sandra Day O’Connor, the first woman on the SUpreme Court and another appointee of Ronald Reagan. Kennedy joined O’Connor d in the majority opinion.

Roe v. Wade itself was authored for the majority by another Republican, Harry Blackmun, who was appointed to the Supreme Court by Richard Nixon.

Brown v. Board of Education, which struck down laws allowing racial segregation, was written by another Republican, Earl Warren, an Eisenhower appointee.

Gideon v. Wainwright, granting indigent non-capital criminal defendants the right to publicly-funded counsel was a Warren decision.

Miranda v. Arizona requiring that certain rights of a person being interrogated while in police custody be clearly explained, including the right to an attorney is also a Warren decision.

“But I think Deval Patrick’s success hints at an even more interesting dynamic that will arise if Obama’s should manage to secure the Democratic nomination. If that should happen, it will be THE story. And not just here in the U.S., but around the world. Obama would be the first African-American to win a major party’s presidential nomination. He’d be just one momentous day away from becoming the leader of the free world. No matter what else happens in the campaign, no matter who his opponent is, that single story line will dwarf all others. Throughout the campaign, media coverage will be dominated by discussion of the historical significance of the election. Newspaper and magazine headlines will scream “Is America on the Verge of Making History?” Throughout the country, there will be a pervasive sense that we are on the cusp of a dramatic and important historical event, that we’re about to take a bold new step forward as a nation. And believe me, people will get caught up in it. It will be a potent political phenomenon. Obama’s opponent, whether it be McCain or Romney or whoever, will have to try very hard to counter the sense that he is standing athwart history yelling “stop.””

As a resident of Massachusetts- I am laughing my sorry ass off at ” Deval Patrick’s success”. Success? he is useless.
He can’t get anything of substance thru
the statehouse. He keeps trying to balance the budget and pay for programs with “funny money”. Revenue from casinos not even built and voted down!
Why did Massachusetts- a state made for Obama to win with Kennedy and Kerry backing- come out SO BIG for Clinton? Because we told David Evilrod- “Been there, Done that, No thank you”
Fool me once- shame on you
Fool me twice- shame on me.
I really think Deval Patrick was Axelrod’s test run , his beta version.

If Deval Patrick is such a success, why did Hillary win MASS by 17 points? Obama had Patrick, Kennedy and Kerry on his side. Could it be they were bamboozled by Patrick, so they could see through Obama? The idea that we are suppose to vote for someone just because they are black, is insane.

It’s just like Dubya’s peeps. The Obamabots are a bunch of young kids who don’t know diddly squat about politics. I was amused to hear my aesthetician, a recent immigrant from Britain, telling me how Hillary Clinton and John McCain are scary–she’s afraid of them–but she trusts Obama. She’s about 21 and probably has nine months job training–no higher education. I have four degrees related to politics, am a native born American, followed politics for 40 years, but this person looks at me and sees a 60 yr old and immediately assumes she needs to explain politics to me. Same with my stylist–also about 29. Both young white women who adore Obama and trust him because he’s a man who lectures and scolds people in an authoritarian manner.

Dubya’s crowd were Bible thumpers were had only recently paid attention to politics and got easily propagandized by Faux News.

So sad that Americans really have become so uninformed and ill-educated that we can’t get a viable presidential candidate.

Comment by cb | 2008-07-02 23:41:21

Exactly s. hall. Thanks for saying this. Bill Clinton savaged by the Obama campaign and the AA community on whose behalf he and his wife the should-be and would-be greatest president HRC, also savaged by false charges of racism while Nobama and the DNC and Pelosi, Dean, Brazile stood by and did absolutely nothing. Sickening. I checked out of the Democratic party Sunday morning after the Democratic Party Rules Committee stole the votes of Florida and Michigan voters and handed them to BO, their selected candidate. This is Bush and 2000 all over again. Another arrogant leader focused on himself.

The Obama base is the neo-liberal corporatist base. The see themselves as a permanent class of ruling elites of institutionalized government. They believe that big bureaucracy, like the UN, is much better able to manage our affairs, there is no trust in the voter. this is the movement very prevalent in the EU today, that of ceding individual state sovereignty to the unelected elites of Brussels.

Anything by the elites to keep another Clinton out of the White House, who was and is for the middle class. Do we need another depression, and the global threat of communism to get someone in the White House who cares about the common middle class person?

The Bushes hated FDR and thought he was a traitor to his class. Now we have Jay Rockefeller and Kennedy and Kerry protecting their own.

We get this fraud of a democratic candidate, who is only made valid by his skin color and the excitement he engenders in the black community.

I keep seeing Kerry on TV from when I used to watch it saying “Ted and I know what’s best for the prty.”

No, it applies only to Obama who received TWICE the number of delegates in every AA district during the Dem primary–compliments of Donna Brazile and Howard Dean. Also got 4 of Hillary’s ELECTED DELEGATES. Never got the popular vote or got enough elected delegates to clinch the nomination, had to be propped up by SDs.

John McCain is the only LEGITIMATE candidate in the race. At least he was elected by Republicans against the will of the RNC elite.

Comment by UKforDems | 2008-07-02 18:59:45

As Hillary pointed out it was a delegate race not a popular vote race.

Popular Vote Total
However the popular vote results
Obama 17,535,458 48.1%
Clinton 17,493,836 48.0%

Comment by Newly Independent | 2008-07-02 22:06:17

Don’t know where you’re getting your (lying) numbers from, but Obama did not win the popular vote.

In addition, Obama got delegates he wasn’t entitled to because he didn’t win them (MI)- which favored Hillary.

So stop trying to rewrite history.

Comment by terri | 2008-07-02 17:39:17

Of course who is US President has international interest. Your last choice sent 4000 of your soldiers, 1000 uk soldiers out to die - for what? How many Iraqis are dead for a war that has only benefited Texas oil barons - (of which the current President is one).

Your last choice of President has led the World to the brink of a great depression that will hit the World.

Your last choice of President has set the environmental agenda back 8 years.

I am not telling you how to vote - I am asking you to think do we really need 4 more years of those same policies?

Comment by UKforDems | 2008-07-02 19:25:33

By the way I am not some anti war liberal, I supported the war in Afghanistan - a war that we are now losing because we lost focus as a result of lies told by both Bush and Blair.

Comment by JR | 2008-07-02 19:50:01

Watch who you’re accusing of voting for Bush. The same people who gave American and the world Bush, are now giving us Obama.

Because you may be blind, I will repeat that. The same people who gave American and the world Bush, are now giving us Obama.

So maybe you should step back and stop being such a racist. Just because Obama’s is around half black and is running as a Democrat, doesn’t mean he isn’t actually a Republican who registered as a “Democratic Candidate for an Election” in order to beat the Clintons and have a chance at winning the election in a year where anything running as Republican is at a huge disadvantage.

A Republican running as a Democrat is so very Rove. In fact, I have reason to believe Dean, Brazile, Reid and Pelosi are actually Republicans. They act like Republicans, cheat like Republicans, and steal like Republicans.

And funniest part about your worship of Obama, is the fact that your country printed that ” how can 53 million people that dumb?” when Bush won in 2004. Looks like the stupid is on the other foot today! You voted for Blair, too. What irony.

Dear god, you actually make me feel a little sad to be a country-man of yours.

Okay, can we have a history lesson. There once was a candidate called Bambi, he came to a disillusioned leftist party full of vim and vigour. The left saw him as a Messiah, a new politician, hope, things can only get better… yay!

It didnt matter that this man seemed to change his tune according to what was vogue at that moment, because we had to get rid of those nasty right wingers.

So many on the left stated time and time again, that Bambi was merely playing the middle-class, and when he got to power, as he surely would, he would be the leftist wonderful prime minister they so craved. Things indeed can only get better.

Question: How’d that turn out? How’s civil liberties in this country now? How’s tax? Who took us to war in Iraq? What happened to people like Kelly, thrown to the wolves by Cambell et at? Please tell me things really got better, please tell me the third way was a success?

Fast forward a few years, and Bambi Mk 2.

Are you so desperate to believe?

Do you actually believe for one moment Obama will pull America out of Iraq? My arse! Yes, I’m sure he will get into power and leave the multi-billion dollar bases empty, I’m sure he’ll turn round and leave pipe-lines and oil companies unsecured, I’m sure he’ll let the Kurdish people get slaughtered in a crush between Turks, Shia and Sunni. I’m sure he’ll click his heels three times and get everyone out… or perhaps, as Power indicated, he’ll suddenly find that things on the ground means we have to stay the course. Hasnt he already started saying how wonderful Petraeus is? Does Petraeus want out?

Obama bring with him cynicism and apathy, just like Blair did. He says what he says to get power, he believes in nothing, and will turn 180 at a moments notice. I’m pissed as its already started to happen, much to my chagrin my wife supported and voted for him in the primaries, now, after a week of pandering to the right she’s begun to realise… he’s no new politician, just the old type with a good PR company.

Here endeth the rant!

Actually that is entirely untrue. Many of our allies refused to participate in the Iraq war. The fact that our president is the equivalent of a drunk driver doesn’t dismiss the Brits decision to get in the car with him. Why don’t you take a poll to see how many people on here voted for Bush? Has it EVER occured to you, that the people on this site are trying to avoid electing another “mistake”. How will you feel if you manage to sway a few voters and Obama turns out to be worse than Bush? What if the world begins to believe that the strongest nation in the world is soft on terrorism? What if one of these ME countries decides to lob a few weapons in your direction? They can reach you easier than us by the way. When you call on the US for help Obama says” I’ll have a talk with them”. How will you feel then? The question I need to ask you is: Why is someone who is without a vote, trying to sway voters? You are obsolved of the responsibilty of our vote. Why not just sit back and read and learn. To me you are an arm chair quarterback. Ever notice that the people who don’t play know what’s best?

Count this as one person who voted against Bush, Twice.

We People of low intellect would like to know how a man with such wisdom regarding that little first amendment phrase plans to get around the Constitution on that issue? He will not be the first black president he will be the first half black president (there is nothing wrong with that, but for gods or (Obama’s) sakes what about his moms culture is that so disturbing to him he has to go to that racist church. He should go to a KKK rally and even everything out. he still has some identity problems.

Revised and updated July 2, 2008

(

Evidence of a covert campaign to undermine the presidential primaries is rife, so it’s curious that many within both the Democratic and Republican parties have ignored the actual elephant in the room this year. That would be Karl Rove, the G.O.P.’s longtime political strategist. Accused of rigging the two previous presidential elections, this master of deceit would have us believe he’s gone off to write op-eds and give lectures on college campuses.

Not so. According to an article in Time magazine last November, Republicans were organized in several states to throw their weight behind frontrunner Senator Hillary Clinton’s principle rival for the Democratic nomination, Senator Barack Obama. While Rove’s name isn’t mentioned in the story, several former fundraisers and strategists for President Bush are identified. With the help of Wall Street investment firms, these gentlemen helped flush Obama’s coffers with cash early on in the race, something the conservative deep pockets had not done for any candidate in their own party. With receipts topping $100 million in 2007, the freshman senator achieved a remarkable feat, given he only first appeared on the national scene in 2004. In fact, the vast majority of Americans did not even hear of him until 2006.

To expedite the Rove strategy, a website and discussion forum called Republicans for Obama formed in 2006. The executive director of New Hampshire’s Republican Party, Stephen DeMaura, later established “Stop Hillary Clinton (One Million Strong AGAINST Hillary)” on Facebook. At the same time, the Obama camp launched its own initiative targeted at Republican primary voters called “Be a Democrat For a Day”. The campaign included a video that was circulated in Florida, Nevada, Vermont and elsewhere explaining the process of switching parties for the election. In addition, many states nowadays hold open primaries, allowing citizens to vote for any candidate, regardless of their party affiliation. In Nebraska, the mayor of Omaha publicly rallied Republicans and Independents to caucus for Obama on February 9th. In Pennsylvania, Time reported on March 19th that Obama was running radio ads in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia asking Republicans to register as Democrats and then vote for him in the state’s April 22nd primary.

The tactic, called crossover voting, allowed Obama to open up an unsurmountable lead in pledged delegates. Republicans for Obama was certainly not bashful in making its case in an email appeal linked to its home page before the March 4th contests. “Since Texas has an open primary,” the appeal read, “Republicans and Independents should sign in at their polling place and request a Democratic ballot. They should then vote for Barack Obama… Just think, no more Clintons in the White House.” Then there was Iowa, which held the nation’s first caucus on January 3rd. Here G.O.P. winner Mike Huckabee received just half as many votes as Clinton, who finished third behind Obama and John Edwards.

Of the 17 states holding open primaries, Obama won 13 of them. And an analysis of the caucus results to date shows that a disproportionate sum of delegates has been awarded to Obama, apparently by design of the Democratic National Committee. Oddly, red states - i.e. those who normally vote Republican in the general election - have been allowed to exercise undue influence on the process, a quirk that dovetailed nicely with G.O.P. strategy to knock Clinton out of the running before November. For instance, Obama’s 13,700 vote margin in the Nebraska caucus netted him 8 pledged delegates, whereas Clinton netted only 9 delegates from her whopping 204,000 vote victory in Ohio’s primary. In Texas, which holds both a primary and caucus, Obama gained 5 more pledged delegates than Clinton, despite the fact that she won the election by a 100,000 vote margin. And although Clinton won the Nevada caucus, the Obama camp managed to finagle more pledged delegates at the state convention held after the vote.

Such discrepancies certainly bring into context what Time meant when it titled its November story “Obama’s red state appeal.” Even with the full compliment of election-scamming tools available to them - phone bank sabotage, fake polling data, swiftboating, waitlisting, electronic voting equipment, Norman Hsu, etc. - G.O.P. operatives would be hard pressed to eclipse Clinton in a general election. By the end of 2007, she held a commanding lead in public opinion polls and boasted a large campaign war chest of her own. Thus, all the vote-rigging tricks known to man wouldn’t make much difference if the contest weren’t close, and in her case, it likely wouldn’t be. Several influential Republicans admitted as much in a February 11th story for Politico. At the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington, also held in February, a single banner strung over the exhibits hall seemed to encapsulate the 2008 election strategy of the Republican Party. It read “Anybody but Hillary”.

On June 4th, that sentiment became reality when Clinton acquiesced to pressure from Democratic Party leaders and announced she would both supsend her campaign and endorse Obama. Her supporters angrily denounced the strong-arm tactics, claiming the Democratic National Committee was conspiring with the Obama campaign to subvert the nominating process. The New York senator had surged towards the end of the primary season, winning six of nine states, and looked to have a real chance of victory at the party’s August gathering in Denver. By contrast, Obama’s support was teetering in the wake of revelations about his long relationship with Pastor Jeremiah Wright of Trinity Church in Chicago, as well as his connection to convicted Chicago political fixer Tony Rezko and his circle of influence peddlers.

However, the issue of electability seemed the last thing on the minds of Democratic Party leaders. Citing the need for unity, DNC Chairman Howard Dean declared Obama the official nominee on June 3rd based on the input of superdelegates, a group of nearly 800 elected leaders and party officials who normally don’t vote until the convention. (That’s why they’re called delegates.) The Obama campaign immediately assumed control over the party apparatus and treasury, and much to the chagrin of Clinton activists and donors, also began contacting her donors for contributions and other support. In short, for the first time in U.S. history a winning candidate had been forced out of the race by means other than a bullet to the head

Comment by SEC | 2008-07-02 16:47:56

I still cannot understand why people are so upset that Obama just was a better strategist than Senator Clinton when it came to the delegate math. Blame advisors if you’d like, but Senator Obama ran an excellent primary campaign.

You have got to be:

a) Joking (poorly)
b) The largest moron ever
c) Palestinian
d) All of the above

You truly can’t come up with a better response than that? The mere fact that Clinton held on until June was a feat that very few others would be able to pull off, given the forces against her (as cited by Caligirl). And Obama can’t run anything (including his own mouth unless he has a teleprompter). He is a puppet on a string; the only question is who is pulling them? Axelrod, Soros, Farrakhan, the Syrians, or Rove?

2. WHO is his real BASE?

and, perhaps most importantly,

3. HOW will we be able to tell?

Comment by SEC | 2008-07-02 16:52:10

Or maybe, just maybe, his real base consists of those who believe that a change is needed in Washington, and the old politics of Clinton and McCain just aren’t what is needed.

Or maybe it’s just easier to demonize the millions of people who voted for them because you disagree with them.

I think it was that you lumped frauds, lawyers, and lobbyists. (Although there probably isn’t anything wrong with being a lawyer. Maybe.)

My guess is that lobbyists would tend to support McCain more than Obama.

There’s nothing wrong with young people voting. Indeed, one of the reasons that we are seeing a resurgance of Democratic voters and Democratic values is because of young people. The problem is when they’re painted as “barely 18-19 year old kids.” For then, there is a casting of doubt on the legitimacy of their votes, as if they were unable to think for themselves.

And Democrats usually get the lion’s share of African-American votes, so having blacks as part of his base doesn’t bother me. They were a large part of President Clinton’s base as well.

Republicans in southern states with open primaries use the strategy to vote for whomever they perceive as the easiest Democratic candidate to beat. My Georgia cousins report that they all lined up to vote for Obama because they know he can’t win in the GE. The black vote is not a majority in any of the southern states.

They aren’t especially fond of McCain but they detest Hillary. Frankly, I can’t figure that one. I’ve always supported Hillary beginning with the first Clinton campaign in ‘92. Can’t have a rational conversation with them about Clintons. Sad. They believe the entire south will go Republican with ease.

Obama lies in his ad:

The ad begins with the announcer telling us that Obama “worked his way through college and Harvard Law.” Actually, Obama took out loans to get himself through college, as we heard in a 60-second ad his campaign began running last month. We don’t know how much assistance his family provided.

But “worked his way” through college and law school? The only back-up the campaign provided for this claim was a quote from Obama’s book “Dreams from My Father” having to do with a construction job he had one summer while he was in college, and an article mentioning his job as a summer associate one year at a big Chicago law firm. We asked campaign spokesman Tommy Vietor if Obama held jobs during the school year, or other summer jobs, but he said only, “He had the two jobs I told you about.” Unless Obama had a good bit more employment than his spokesman was able to describe for us, it’s a real stretch to claim he “worked his way” through school.

Comment by SEC | 2008-07-02 16:50:19

If he, indeed, worked to pay off his loans, then his comment is factually correct.

If you’d like to argue against Obama, wouldn’t it be better to use substance instead of things such as this? You’ll have much more of an impact in getting others to vote for someone than Obama. Most people that I know of would see a complaint such as that, roll their eyes, and go on with their life, their opinions unchanged.

I’ve actually studied black liberation theology, so I didn’t have as much of a problem with several of the things that Wright spoke about. I may disagree with it, but Wright was being faithful to a theological system that he believes in. I also took time to look at the comments in context, and I know that the Bible does make statements that the inhabitants of the country can make good choices and be blessed by God and they can make bad choices and be cursed.

I disagreed with what he did at the Press Club, though. He’d probably be somebody that I could have coffee with, but I don’t think I’d go to his church.

One can study something without espousing it. My guess is that it actually helps us with what we really do believe. Again, we live in a pluralistic society, for better or for worse. That means that people can have their own opinions and don’t have to agree with one point of view.

I know people who have studied black liberation theology who would not vote for Obama because of their feelings of that theology. I do know that from what I’ve studied, Obama is not a Marxist. One can have doubts about his Christianity (or his types of Christianity), but one cannot concurrently be a Marxist and a follower of Christ, even just a professed one. It’s philosophically impossible.

Comment by MBC | 2008-07-02 17:05:31

So, I am curious then SEC, what exactly (specifically) appeals to you about Sen. Obama’s platform and positions?

Comment by SEC | 2008-07-02 17:15:04

One of the things that first attracted me to Obama’s campaign was the idea that change can be more effective coming from the ground up. There’s nothing wrong with inspiring people to believe in a future that is greater than the present and encouraging people to get involved.

I was struck during the primary campaign at how many times other candidates used terms such as “I” and “me,” while Obama used terms such as “we” and “us.” I do not agree with many of Obama’s issues. He’s more conservative than me on gun control, by a long shot. He’s more liberal than me on abortion rights. I agree with his stances on civil rights, on the need to get out of Iraq, and I like what he has to say on energy and the economy, especially compared to McCain. I may be one of the few people who appreciate what he’s trying to do in utilizing faith-based community organizations to help others. I’m a minister, so that shouldn’t be too much of a surprise.

I just cannot fathom another four years of failed Republican policies. Even if Obama turns out to be a mediocre president, that would still be preferable than a tragic presidency.

A minister? No wonder you’re fine with him being a liar. Anyone can say “we” and “us”. If it’s that easy to get your support, then you shouldn’t be allowed to vote based on reckless stupidity. You can also admit that you fell for Bush’s “uniter” rhetoric, and voted for him. Anyone who refuses to learn from their mistakes in voting should have their vote suspended until they learn to stop being so purposely stupid and willing to punish everyone else because you get a “feeling” or decide something so trivial as using the word “we” is somehow the answer to the country’s problems.

But then again, you are a “minister”, so as long as he promises to fight abortion and continue Bush’s faith-based pandering, you’re sold.

All of this is, of course, assuming you are NOT a paid troll.

Have fun making more stupid decisions for the entire country…AGAIN! lol

SEC,

I believe that you are sincere in your reasons for being here and your reasons for supporting Obama. I live in the Chicagoland area. I have heard all of this before from Obama. When he says “us” and “we”, you are the farthest thing from his mind. “Us” and “we” are his Chicago buddies, not the citizens of Chicago (Or the US). Have you ever done any research on Obama and Chicago politics? Illinois is the most politically corrupt state in the country. Do a quick search on “Board Games”, “Pay to Play”, and “Hired Truck Scandal”, there are many others but this should keep you busy for awhile. The one question I have for any Obama supporter is this: How did Obama reach the top of the biggest pigstye in American government without getting anything on him? How did he win his senate seat in a heavily Farakhan influenced district without Farakhan’s help? He didn’t. How did he manage to go from part-time and ineffective State Senator to Us Seanator without the help of the Chicago Machine? He didn’t. You know that he was losing in his senate race until his opponents divorce proceedings went public right? How did that happen? Obama is up to his eyeballs in the Chicago Machine. The one thing I can tell you without a moments hesitation is: They do not care about you. I personally agree that a lot of the things said about Obama are a bit “over the top”, however knowing what I know, by living where I live, My motto is “Whatever it takes”. I don’t care how this mistake is avoided, just that IT IS avoided. If it’s a bogus birth certificate or a “whitey tape”. That’s cool with me.

Comment by DoroB | 2008-07-02 21:05:49

Even if Obama turns out to be a mediocre president

That’s a lot of assumptions there. How do you know Obama will be merely mediocre? How do you know he won’t be spectacularly bad? Based on what kind of records are you making this claim? Because I’m not the only one who is puzzled by what Obama stands for and who has no clue what he has done. We know he is inexperienced. We know he has flip-flopped too many times. We know he has pandered his lips off. We also know he did nothing while his constituents froze to death in the slums that his political contributors built. That’s what we know.

Think about it. You’re assuming that just because Obama is a “Democrat” his presidency won’t be tragically bad. It has no logical basis.

Comment by street_parade | 2008-07-02 21:21:43

Well, he used to believe in gun control (as an IL state senator), until he didn’t (as a Presidential candidate).

He made one speech against the war (as an IL state senator) and was never heard from again, until he started running in the primaries where he was against it (even though he had voted to fund it) and now that the general has begun he’s moving away from his anti-war position (or at least he led Iraq’s Prime Minister to believe so).

McCain’s energy policy is much more thought out and comprehensive than Obama’s. I’m against handing out tax dollars to churches (it’s nothing by pork barrel politics) so we’ll just have to agree to disagree on that one.

I don’t think either one of them has a clue what to do about the economy, but the situation is so bleak NOBODY does…so I won’t ding either one of them on that.

All the rest of the stuff you mention is just a lot of hopey / changey new-age junk, so it means nothing to me. If it works for you, okay.

Who is Obama?

He is a typical ambitious politician who achieves power through pay-to-play.

Who is is real base?

Obama said the first person he consulted about running for president was James Crown. General Dynamics is the base that gets him elected. He has a significant base from Chicago as well. People who will profit from a different set of polices than the citizenry in housing, healthcare, banking and energy.

How will we be able to tell?
The size and scope of the creation of the myth of Obama tells you that the answer to number 2 is correct.

Comment by Annie Oakley | 2008-07-02 17:14:09

I forgot to add to question #1 that Obama is the biggest distraction in history. Hard to recall that before this circus began we were concerned with how the nation had been taken to war, the independence of the Justice Department, the honesty of defense contracting, the fairness of our elections, the freeness of our press, the integrity of our financial system, etc. Now we are only concerned with whether we demonstrate a sufficient loyalty to The One. It’s brilliant.

And, just for the record: I may be in a minority here, but I have never thought Obama articulate. That fact alone causes doubt to the truth of his story. Since the Obamas records are sealed until after the election (WTF - we need to know who we’re voting for BEFORE the election) we may never know.
Did anyone read the recent coverage on AOL of Obama’s sister’s campaining on his behalf to the Asian community? She was describing her big brother, among other things, as not getting “the best grades” in school.

Extended repayment

Make monthly payments that are as low as interest-only for the first few years or monthly payments of principal and interest. With extended repayment, you may have up to 25 years to repay your federal student loans.

Besides that, he didn’t even say it took over 10 years to pay off - he said nearly a decade.

“Obama doesn’t believe any of the things he is now saying to woo the ‘redneck states’”…..

How can anybody who has been paying the slightest bit of attention believe him? And I must say, especially the evangelicals. They were used shamelessly by the Republicans in the last two elections. I would think they would be extremely wary of any politician who comes pandering to them. Only thing is, most of them seem to have a deep aversion to John McCain, which is probably why Obama thinks it is worth his while to court them.

All in all, I prefer the Webster Tarpley/Lyndon LaRouche theory fingering Soros as the driving force behind the Democrats’ insanity. I haven’t come across any comments anywhere giving any reasons at all why anyone should doubt his influence in this election. And if he has influence over the nomination and the election, he will certainly have influence in the aftermath.

Of course, even Soros wouldn’t have that much influence unless he were able to control the Party elders like Kerry, Kennedy, Dodd, Hart, Bradley, Carter, Brzezinski, Richardson, and various other assorted opportunists and Clinton turncoats.

Disgusting! This whole business has reached a new low.

Following are some interesting excerpts from an Editorial in today’s Wall Street Journal

Bush’s Third Term
Editorial
Wall Street Journal
July 2, 2008

We’re beginning to understand why Barack Obama keeps protesting so vigorously against the prospect of “George Bush’s third term.” Maybe he’s worried that someone will notice that he’s the candidate who’s running for it.

Most Presidential candidates adapt their message after they win their party nomination, but Mr. Obama isn’t merely “running to the center.” He’s fleeing from many of his primary positions so markedly and so rapidly that he’s embracing a sizable chunk of President Bush’s policy. Who would have thought that a Democrat would rehabilitate the much-maligned Bush agenda?

Take the surveillance of foreign terrorists. Last October, while running with the Democratic pack, the Illinois Senator vowed to “support a filibuster of any bill that includes retroactive immunity for telecommunications companies” that assisted in such eavesdropping after 9/11. As recently as February, still running as the liberal favorite against Hillary Clinton, he was one of 29 Democrats who voted against allowing a bipartisan Senate Intelligence Committee reform of surveillance rules even to come to the floor.

Two weeks ago, however, the House passed a bill that is essentially the same as that Senate version, and Mr. Obama now says he supports it. Apparently legal immunity for the telcos is vital for U.S. national security, just as Mr. Bush has claimed. Apparently, too, the legislation isn’t an attempt by Dick Cheney to gut the Constitution. Perhaps it is dawning on Mr. Obama that, if he does become President, he’ll be responsible for preventing any new terrorist attack. So now he’s happy to throw the New York Times under the bus.

Mr. Obama has also made ostentatious leaps toward Mr. Bush on domestic issues. While he once bid for labor support by pledging a unilateral rewrite of Nafta, the Democrat now says he favors free trade as long as it works for “everybody.” His economic aide, Austan Goolsbee, has been liberated from the five-month purdah he endured for telling Canadians that Mr. Obama’s protectionism was merely campaign rhetoric. Now that Mr. Obama is in a general election, he can’t scare the business community too much.

This week the great Democratic hope even endorsed spending more money on faith-based charities. Apparently, this core plank of Mr. Bush’s “compassionate conservatism” is not the assault on church-state separation that the ACLU and liberals have long claimed. And yesterday, Mr. Obama’s campaign unveiled an ad asserting his support for welfare reform that “slashed the rolls by 80 percent.” Never mind that Mr. Obama has declared multiple times that he opposed the landmark 1996 welfare reform.

Most important is the matter of Mr. Obama’s political character — and how honest he is being about what he truly believes. His voting record in the Senate and in Illinois, as well as his primary positions, would make him the most liberal Presidential candidate since George McGovern in 1972. But he clearly doesn’t want voters to believe that in November. He’s still the Obama Americans don’t know.

Comment by NoToDisenfranchisement | 2008-07-02 20:04:55

Obama is a politically opportunist - he votes present until he knows which way the opportunity blows and then he conveniently goes in that direction.

same behavior, different times. he’s been doing the same thing since he’s been in the IL Senate.

BHO even does impersonations of MLK and JFK depending on the audience.

His constant change is dizzying and he’s a chameleon/changeling/shapeshifter.

Like a criminal defendant constantly attempting to explain his bad behavior when BHO gets busted: “It wasn’t me, it was my aide, my Grandmother’s racist, etc.

Faith based organizations???? You are surprised???? The history, heart and soul of black politics is rooted in the black church (count the Rev.s who make up the who’s who). Many of these men and women from Black churches paid heavy dues. But faith based initiatives under GWB have been a whole new ball game. Black churches have been major winners in faith based politics. Look at TUCC. Obama will not only continue this GWB practice, look for these initiatives to expand. These are also some of the most corrupt public give-aways in the US. It will get worse. Republicans bought church support with this pork barrel and they are going to be very sorry when they have to turn it over to the Dems who will make Republican largess look like Scrooge.

In any event he seems to have been replaced by Jason Furman phd, Brookings Institute director, with ties to the Clinton administration & in my opinion a more reasoned person than Goolsbee. Furman made his 1st attache appearance on Larry Kudlow’s show tonight & announced he thinks “Obama can accomplish his economic goals by only raising taxes on cap gains to 20%, uh, uh, 24%??? (inaudible)…”–a far sight better than the ole fightin’ words of 28% that many say have helped cast a dark cloud over an already troubled Wall St. & keepin’ me awake at night. Do I believe him? I’m tryin’.

Whoops, I just googled Jason Furman & POLITICO has a June 9th post that says Goolsbee is staying onboard as an unpaid advisor & to work with (for) Furman. Also of interest: Furman has worked on both Wes Clark & John Kerry’s failed presidential bids.

To everyone who said Kerry lost because he was swift-boated, that is wrong. Democrats would like to believe that but it isn’t true. He lost because he talked down to us and not to us. He acted like he was better than us. I’m from Ohio, the swing state that won it for Bush.

Obama will lose this election because he keeps changing positions like the last 2 Democrats did. He becomes untrustworthy. Bill Clinton kept his positions all the way through.

Funny how he can manage to be the “most liberal senator” and GWB’s twin at the same time.

He’s not a liberal. Even voting with the Democratic Party 100% of the time doesn’t make you a liberal or a progressive. (For comparison’s sake, see Kucinich, or Edwards.) Anyone who’s read his books or watched him in action can see that he supports many policies favored by the neocon wing of the Republican Party. It’s not like this is some big secret or tinfoil conspiracy; it’s all right out there in the open. Look at his economic advisors; look at his close relationships with people like Doug Kmiec; look at his contributors. He’s not “shifting” to the right, he was always there.
