Is There a Sucker Born Every Minute?

It’s unfortunate that Barack Obama won instant supporters based on the “buzz” about a single speech against the war in 2002 — a speech so little noted by Chicago media that it had to be recreated in a studio for Obama’s campaign ads (see “The Staged Iraq War Speech & More “Creative” Embellishments“). A single speech never followed by further actions or even more words. Ambassador Joseph Wilson says that he looked everywhere for help before the Iraq War, and never once heard about Obama, let alone heard from him.

wcfields.jpgYet, legions of supporters flocked to Obama based on that one speech. Now Obama has adopted a revisionist Iraq policy. “Never give a sucker an even break.” Is W.C. Fields now an Obama consultant? Here’s Mark Halperin’s title for this clip of Obama speaking in North Dakota today — Halperin’s notes on statements today are below:

OBAMA SEEKS TO ‘CLARIFY’ IRAQ COMMENTS

In a second, quickly-scheduled press availability, the Senator insists his position on Iraq has not changed. Watch video above.

“I intend to end this war... That position has not changed. I have not equivocated on that position. I am not searching for maneuvering room with respect to that position.”

Though he also says:

“I have always reserved the right to do what’s best for America’s national interest… I would be a poor commander-in-chief if I didn’t take facts on the ground into account.”

McCain team responds: “Today, Barack Obama reversed (his) position, proving once again that his words do not matter. He has now adopted John McCain’s position….” Read full statement.

Earlier: Obama tells reporters in North Dakota he plans a “a thorough assessment” of his Iraq policy during his coming visit to the country. Read his full comments here.

RNC response: “There appears to be no issue that Barack Obama is not willing to reverse himself on for the sake of political expedience.”

It’s very easy to see why people would be drawn to a candidate who professed to be against the war early on and assured them, in speech after speech, that he’d end it quickly.

After eight years of George Bush and Dick Cheney, people were so desperate they were seeking a “savior.”

But, that’s never how it works out in the real world, only in movies. And that’s especially how it never works out in politics.

On public financing, FISA, and Iraq, Obama has shifted positions, sometimes 180 degrees, all for one reason: So he can win.

I just hope his followers don’t think he’ll become their savior once again if he’s elected.

Great post! I love the WC Fields image, too.

Comment by UKforDems | 2008-07-03 19:15:21

He said exactly what the same as he did in November.

“According to all the reports, we should have been well along our way in getting the Iraqi security forces to be more functional. We then have another 16 months after that to adjust the withdrawal and make sure that we are withdrawing from those areas, based on advice from the military officers in the field, those places where we are secured, made progress and we’re not just willy-nilly removing troops, but we’re making a determination – in this region we see some stability. We’ve had cooperation from local tribal leaders and local officials, so we can afford to remove troops here. Here, we’ve still got problems, it’s going to take a little bit longer. Maybe those are the last areas to pull out.” [New York Times, 11/1/07]

Unless the generals tell him otherwise. Oh, I mean after he consults with the generals and Obama decides to go with what the generals say, by coming out and saying, “I have told the generals this is what we are going to do”.

Comment by Teakwood | 2008-07-03 22:16:49

BO: Courage! What makes a king out of a slave? Courage! What makes the flag on the mast to wave? Courage! What makes the elephant charge his tusk in the misty mist, or the dusky dusk? What makes the muskrat guard his musk? Courage! What makes the sphinx the seventh wonder? Courage! What makes the dawn come up like thunder? Courage! What makes the Hottentot so hot? What puts the “ape” in apricot? What have they got that I ain’t got?
Dorothy, Scarecrow, Tin Woodsman: Courage!
BO: You can say that again! Huh?

The generals could say almost anything to him and he has no experience to know if he is been “McPeek’ed”…

BO; “this is cool”!

Now you’ve gone and done it SusanUnPc. Love WC Fields! :)

I am kind of curious….I find it simply fascinating how anyone can have a plan on withdrawal and can state “exactly” there intent when they have no idea on whats happening on ground.

Amazing really. If the American people take any of these things at face value, they deserve to have buyers remorse later on down the line. I mean, how the hell can anyone have the nerve and audacity to speak in public they are supporting Senator Obama based on a speech made here, in the Unite States, when the war is happening somewhere else? A place he has not been but yet can state at that time how adamently he opposed it.

But even more, he is outlining a plan on troop withdrawal on camera, here, in the United States, when he hasnt talked to any of the officials on ground. Really? Oh and just to let people know, but I doubt anyone cares since its just easier to belive Senator Obama but the whole “withdrawing the two brigades thing”? It’s called a normal rotation. They were coming home anyway.

Jesus people if you want to ruin lives, ruin yours instead of fucking over the entire country by voting on bullshit pandering. It pays to discover. Think about it. And stop quoting that 100 year crap. Seriously. FYI: If the Democratic party majority we have let something such as this pass (IF it was realistic that is)who are you going to blame then?

Stop playing on peoples ignorance with letting them think everything the president states just magically happens. If thats the case they wouldnt of had to VOTE to send us there originally.

I dont support Senator Obama and I dont support Senator Mccain. However is it to much to ask for people to just like think? Use logic? The reason Senator Mccain does not state a timetable is because he is correct all the way across the board. The mission is not complete for us. No one is going to just yank us out because Senator Obama said so.

If its not Iraq, it will be Afghanistan. It may come as a suprise to alot of people but actually that our job. Some may not like it and some may not understand it, but the thing is, its a voluntary service. One in which, speaking for myself, I love. So people should be real hesitant when they start that whole if Senator Mccain is president he will initate the draft.

Dont worry about that, we got it. Because after viewing the supporters of Senator Obama and the paid bloggers and shills, the thought of them being “drafted” and serving with me is enough to make me reenlist for 100 years just so they wouldnt get the chance to exhibit all the crap I have seen daily.

Sad really…why everyone in the media is focusing on the “Obama Remix” on his positions, crazy for one thing since the small amount of times he actually discussed them, it takes the focus of the current administration and what there doing.

I wish I could create a detox for the obamaide because by the time anyone realizes whats going on around them because of the losers in the Democratic party, the Republicans are being handed everything they want on a silver plater.

Why? Hmmm, well because all they have to quote is how weak our selected nominee is and they all raise there hands saying “yea” because they dont want to appear weak. They are going to get everything they want passed based on the fact as soon as BO doesnt vote for anythind dealing with national security, 527s will be made on that alone.

That is the bigger picture. The reality. So how mad do you think you can get between now and november as an Obama supporter when he begins going with everything the Repugs put on the table.

Just waite..you havent seen shit yet. They knew this was suppose to be a hands down Dem year but because of your, not mine, Democratic Party, they have been handed a fucking blank check with Fisa and god knows what else which we will see before the Dem convention.

Sell your simplistic “100 years” talking point on an Obot site where they’ll buy it. Everyone knows McCain didn’t meant that literally.

Everyone here knows his anti-war bs was false political ground….and you think you are sharing news here!? LOL

Comment by believe | 2008-07-03 19:34:59

Interesting isn’t it that the Iraq conflict is looking somewhat better and Barry looks scared? Maybe he should have had a few committee meetings for Afghanistan now that more people are dying there than in Iraq? Is he just trying to kick sand in our eyes?

Comment by soldier4hillarythenextcommanderinchief | 2008-07-03 21:11:20

WoW. I knew someone would see it! They had a article on yahoo news where bush stated we would be moving up our numbers. But gee, no one cares…they would rather keep digging out articles on flip flops of Obama and watch the train wreck that is the Democratic party than realize something huge..fighting two wars at one time. And its right there but no one wants to see it.

The media is reporting it but they are focusing on the BO remixes on his issues. god just for once I wish people would just quit taking this shit at face value, stop thinking a historical election candidate is better than one with experience.

Senator Obama is quoting time tables when we are about to move up numbers by taking away from one location to another. The Repugs are ruthless and when they start bringing out the big guns and turning the clean sweeper on, its all over.

You cannot quote a timetable. I may dislike Senator Obama to the point of nausea, but his advisors in his campaign are straight screwing him over. He should of never did that press conference to clarify when he has not even met one general or official on ground. That is a mistake that surpasses our current president.

The Democratic parties strong point is not national security. They had opportunities they did not utilize and Iraq has never been a strong point for them. He is up shit creek without a paddle, and the magnitude of this is enormous.

He threw what would of been his best bet under the bus on advising him on Iraq. If I didnt no better, I would swear this is a set up. Because if clark was “behind” him, there is no way Senator Obama would be this fucked up when it comes to Iraq.

UKforDems, and his brownshirt ilk, do not want you to look at Obama’s words about withdrawal prior to November 7 because originally, he did not qualify his statement with the “on the ground” proviso. His stated position was to have the troops out, except for a remedial force, by March 31. 2008.

In time, Obama’s webscrubbers will eliminate these nasty facts, so nothing in the record can contradict their historical revisionism.

Both of these candidates are seriously flawed, and now, no matter which way the election goes, all the Hillary people will be able to rightfully say, “I told you so.” Hillary Clinton was the only one consistently on the correct side of the issues, and honest about being fooled by George Bush.

I found it interesting [and oh so typical] that Obama had to call a press conference to explain and contextualize a comment he made during a press conference. One of those: this is what I said but this is what I really meant moments. You have to give it to Obama, he’s on a roll with these reversals and his “inartful” comments are becoming an art form.

As astounding as the shift in positions are the ragged explanations from supporters [though I notice even on the Kos blog and the Huffy Post, the wiggle-waggle is losing it's luster and in some cases showing true disillusionment].

Surprised? No. But self-destruct mode is never pleasant to watch.

Maybe Obama should go to the canned questions like GWB did when he held a press conference. That way when he goofs up the answer, his aides can pass out WORM answer sheets to the media. It’ll save him having to look stupid multiple times on one question.

This is front-paged at Kos right now. It sure doesn’t sound like a lot of anger at Obama.

It was good of Senator Obama to address the subject, and to take notice of the fact that the group of supporters asking him to consider a different position on the upcoming FISA bill had quickly become the single largest group organized on his web site to date. He’s not a United States Senator and the Democratic nominee for President for nothing. And neither are the organizers’ efforts undeserving of attention.

The substantive differences remain largely unresolved, and likely will remain so. But if Obama wasn’t OK with that, he probably wouldn’t have run for president. And if you weren’t OK with it, you probably wouldn’t be participating on blogs.

It only took a matter of DAYS in the US Senate before he was voting to support those who had lied us into war, fund the war, or those who profit from the war.

Here’s what Rick Klein said at ABC’s Political Punch:

There’s been lots of speculation this week about whether Sen. Barack Obama has an Iraq problem. He does now.

His comments Thursday, saying that he will “continue to refine” his plan to withdraw combat troops from Iraq inside of 16 months, seems likely to leave the campaign on the defensive on this issue for days or weeks.

http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2008/07/obamas-iraq-qua.html

The title of the piece? “Obama’s Iraq Quagmire”

Comment by believe | 2008-07-03 18:58:24

Wow – Those ABC folks sure hate Obama.

He’s been saying the same thing for — well, forever.
It’s a standard line in his speeches, that he will do what makes sense given conditions on the ground.

When I heard him speak, it got a huge roar of approval. Why? Because folks are sick of Bush and how he does the same thing no matter what the conditions warrant.

Last November, I mentioned to a friend that in one year by the time of the general election in Nov. 2008 the Iraqi war will not be the same issue it is today. This staunchly anti-war friend had a puzzled look and I explained. Maliki was before the UN Security Council for a one year extension on the UN mandate for the presence of coalition troops on Iraqi soil. At that time he said this will be the last time I need to appear before the Security Council. Taken at his word that means the occupation will end in November 2008.

Meanwhile, the negotiations on the Iraq Security Agreement that will govern foreign troops operating in Iraq after Nov. 2008 is almost finalized. The last major hurdle relating to jurisdiction over foreign troops and their civilian contractors for civil and criminal liability arising from unauthorized acts and for freedom to engage in combat operations have now been finally resolved in favor of the Iraqi government. The Iraqi government will have supreme command of all military operations in the country and be able to prosecute foreign troops and contractors who commit criminal acts inside the country. Full Iraqi sovereignty has been established. the Iraqi foreign minister expects the agreement to be signed in the next two weeks.

Finally, the virulent anti-Bush, anti-American Der Spiegel, just look at some their covers from the last five years here:
http://medienkritik.typepad.com/blog/2008/05/davids-medienkr.html
has this to say about Bagdad today:

There is an unexpected air of normalcy prevailing in Baghdad these days, with consumption flourishing and confidence in the government growing. The progress is astonishing…
…the number of optimists is growing, and the administration of US President George W. Bush no longer has a monopoly on confidence…
…the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia have now announced that they will be sending ambassadors to Baghdad
…The government has now been able to give its civil servants a generous pay increase…
…German automotive giant Daimler plans to open an office in Baghdad and build trucks there…
…King Abdullah II of Jordan…recently said something astonishing …”I am actually optimistic for the first time on Iraq. It’s the first time that I have felt that Iraqis have, as much as they can, bound themselves together into a unity.”

the article ends with how Sadr has gone from sectarian warrior to nothing more than a foe of globalization. Read it all here:

To see what Obama is all about on the money side of the fence he plays on, simply go check out the 2016 Chicago Olympic Commitee members and see how many of them are working on Obama’s campaign, then do the math with billions available to all these greedy people if Chicago gets the Games next year.

It will never happen if McCain is POTUS since the IOC hates McCain for his attacks against them as Chair of the Senate Commitee on them over bribery in the Salt Lake Games!

Why do you think Obama took over the DNC for, one reason to control those entering the Senate and Hose, why, to get the Fed money Chicago needs to fix its screwed up infrastructure for the Games, one of its losing factors with the IOC. Billions, $27 Billion needed just there!

Obama can call whatever he wants old news, that is the old Saul Alinsky tactic, but it is never old news if it is continually attacked front and center!

And don’t forget which media is the Olympic channel too, spending a billion for the 2012 Games alone!

And the Games in China are coming up, is Bambi going to continue is skirting around Bush attending the Opening Ceremonies, any bets he will!

The question is how, not whether, we withdraw

Today, Barack Obama said that when he goes to Iraq and meets with military commanders on the ground, he will use the information he learns as part of his continuing process of refining his policies. What he said wasn’t anything new. He’s always said we need to be as careful getting out as we were careless (edit: I’d initially omitted that word by accident!) getting in — but the important point is that he has consistently said we are getting out.

Nonetheless, Republicans predictably sought to portray Barack’s comments as a flip-flop on Iraq. (Obviously, their goal is to drive a wedge between Obama and Democratic activists.) The GOP is merely parroting the McCain campaign, the original source of this meme.

The GOP spin is nonsense. Barack Obama has consistently supported ending the war in Iraq. He has not wavered, not one bit.
There is no chance that he will change his position on it.

As for the question of how we withdraw (not whether), doesn’t it make sense to listen to the commanders on the ground? Why should one be dogmatic about methods as opposed to goals?

“How we withdraw”? He based his candidacy on a speech(why am I not surprised) he made in 2002 stating that he was against going to war remember? Now he wants to give a generic statement stating that he will get the troops out. Well, Hillary said the same thing, McCain said he will get them out in 100 years, no one doubts at some point the troops will come home. The point is he made himself out to be some wise leader who knew before everyone else how bad it was to go to Iraq. Now he wants to parse his words and gather info and change his original strategy, What? See the problem is the product doesn’t deliver, his supporters have bought something that’s a fake and doesn’t work. It’s a dud, send it back.

Well, his spiritual guru Wright warned us that he’s just a politician who’ll say anything, “that’s what politicians do.” Now it’s not so much fun anymore without Hillary to destroy. With Senator Clinton out of the way it’s just him and he’s not in Kansas(or Chicago) anymore. He’s got to convince the “bitter”people to go for him and since that’s never going to happen we’ll see one press conference after another ad nauseum because that’s all he’s got, words and even his speeches and statements are losing their appeal. Changing positions every day speaks to a person’s character and eventually wears people out, one by one they’ll throw him under the bus.

Comment by believe | 2008-07-03 19:26:13

Obama said he had not changed his position regarding Iraq troop withdrawals, but that he could “refine” his policy after assessing the situation there.

This, of course, echoes what Obama said at the Sept. 26 NBC News/MSNBC debate from Dartmouth, N.H., (see full transcript at link) when neither he nor Clinton nor Edwards would commit to having troops out by 2013.

“I think it’s hard to project four years from now, and I think it would be irresponsible,” Obama said then. “We don’t know what contingency will be out there. What I can promise is that if there are still troops in Iraq when I take office, which it appears there may be unless we can get some of our Republican colleagues to change their mind and cut off funding without a timetable, if there’s no timetable, then I will drastically reduce our presence there to the mission of protecting our embassy, protecting our civilians and making sure that we’re carrying out counterterrorism activities there.

“I believe that we should have all our troops out by 2013, but I don’t want to make promises not knowing what the situation’s going to be three or four years out.”

Read the whole transcript!!!!

FULL NBC/MSNBC TRANSCRIPT:
MR. RUSSERT: Good evening, and welcome. We have some big issues to talk about tonight, so let’s start right now.

Senator Obama, I’d like to start with you. General Petraeus in his testimony before Congress, later echoed by President Bush, gave every indication that in January of 2009 when the next president takes office, there will be 100,000 troops in Iraq. You’re the president. What do you do? You said you would end the war. How do you do it in January of 2009?

SEN. OBAMA: Well, first of all, Tim, let me say thank you to Dartmouth for hosting this event.

And let me also say that had my judgment prevailed back in 2002, we wouldn’t be in this predicament. I was opposed to this war from the start, have been opposed to this war consistently. But I have also said that there are no good options now; there are bad options and worse options.

I hope and will work diligently in the Senate to bring an end to this war before I take office. And I think that it is very important at this stage, understanding how badly the president’s strategy has failed, that we not vote for funding without some timetable for this war.

If there are still large troop presences in when I take office, then the first thing I will do is call together the Joint Chiefs of Staff and initiate a phased redeployment. We’ve got to be as careful getting out as we were careless getting in. But military personnel indicate we can get one brigade to two brigades out per month.

I would immediately begin that process. We would get combat troops out of Iraq. The only troops that would remain would be those that have to protect U.S. bases and U.S. civilians, as well as to engage in counterterrorism activities in Iraq.

The important principle, though, is there are not going to be any military solutions to the problem in Iraq. There has to be a political accommodation, and the best way for us to support the troops and to stabilize the situation in Iraq is to begin that phased redeployment.

MR. RUSSERT: Will you pledge that by January 2013, the end of your first term more than five years from now, there will be no U.S. troops in Iraq?

SEN. OBAMA: I think it’s hard to project four years from now, and I think it would be irresponsible. We don’t know what contingency will be out there.

I believe that we should have all our troops out by 2013, but I don’t want to make promises not knowing what the situation’s going to be three or four years out.

Is there anything left for him to flip flip on?

Well, I suppose you can count on McCain not to flip-flop.

He hasn’t on Iraq. What’s $341.4 million dollars a day times 100 years?

He hasn’t flip-flopped on the Bush tax cuts. Nor on his assertion that he’ll balance the budget in spite of them.

No flip-flopping on his Right to Life stance.

Or on his desire to privatize Social Security.

No flip-flopping on Iran. He might be trying to decide if it’s better for Israel to bomb them than us. Does he have a game plan for when Iran retalliates by sending a few hundred-thousand ground troops across the Iraqi border? They’ve got 513,000 regulars in the field, and 350,000 reserves; 3 battalions of Marines; plus 1,000,000 Basij civilian volunteers. They’ve got 2 heavy destroyers, 3 frigates, 2 corvettes, and 10 fast-attack missle ships. 1,245 heavy tanks. 2,320 pieces of heavy artillary. 100 AH-1J attack helicopters. And they don’t have to commute halfway around the world to get them where they want them. There’s also the minor problem that they could stop all oil traffic in the Strait of Hormuz.

Just minor details, of course.

Comment by Teresa | 2008-07-03 21:13:55

Just one more minor detail, the US GDP is $13,843,855 milliom dollars per year according to the IMF. That means the US produces $37,928 million in goods every day. Accordingly, the $341.4 million per day that you quote cost the US less than 1% of its GDP every day. EOn a pure economic basis, that’s chump change.

If you are looking for the real expenditures that are dragging the economy, start cutting social entitlement spending. Entitlements account for over 65% of the annual budget, that’s a lot of pork. The entire defense budget is only one tenth of that.

Our dollar became weak because of the credit cards, the sub prime mortgages, people spending and not saving, off shoring workers because of a Bush Tax Credit to corporations, and other things that affect our economy.
Bush made a lot of bad decisions and since Obama has less experience in making these type of decisions, I can just see our country becoming worse rather than better regardless of what happens with the war.

I would have given McCain $500 in 2000. He would’ve kept Bush from getting the nomination in a year the incumbent was weak.

Comment by imustprotest | 2008-07-03 23:36:45

I’ve thought the same thing, if I’d had $500 extra in 2000 I would have sent it to McCain in 2000 to keep Bush out. I also felt sorry for the guy after getting beat up by Bushies friends.

Sorry, I am just not feeling it today. I suppose I am supposed to be hyperventilating about this Obama statement:

“I’ve always said that the pace of withdrawal would be dictated by the safety and security of our troops and the need to maintain stability. That assessment has not changed,” he said. “And when I go to Iraq and have a chance to talk to some of the commanders on the ground, I’m sure I’ll have more information and will continue to refine my policies.”

But, since that is what he has said all along, I guess I just can’t find it in me to freak out.

Comment by Hope Floats | 2008-07-03 21:09:33

I will keep US troops in the Middle East forever.

That’s what McCain said. “Even if it takes 100 years, I will only withdraw troops when the US is perfectly safe, and I will rely on the advice of commanders on the ground.” Except Obama lied and promised he would withdraw troops immediately throughout his campaign.

Comment by imustprotest | 2008-07-03 23:40:35

He was obviously using hyperbole to make a strong point. The Obamacampbots just want to pull that out of context and twist the intent. But Barry flip flops all over and they call it “refining”.

LOTS OF QUOTES FROM OBAMA OVER MANY MONTHS – SAYING THE SAME EXACT THING

OBAMA HAS CONSISTENTLY SAID HE WILL LISTEN TO COMMANDERS ON THE GROUND IN IMPLEMENTING HIS POLICY

June 2008: Obama: I’ve Consistently Said That I Will Consult With Military Commanders On The Ground And Be Open To The Possibility Of Tactical Adjustments. Obama said, “I’ve also consistently said that I will consult with military commanders on the ground and that we will always be open to the possibility of tactical adjustments. The important thing is to send a clear signal to the Iraqi people and most importantly to the Iraqi leadership that the U.S. occupation in Iraq is finite, it is gonna be coming to a foreseeable end.” [MSNBC, 6/16/08]

March 2008: Obama Said He Would Give Senior Military Leaders Opinions Great Weight In Implementing His Iraq Plan But As Commander In Chief Would Make His Own Assessment Of The Situation. Obama was asked “what weight will you give to the counsel of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, the CENTCOM [U.S. Central Command] commander, the combatant commander on the ground in Iraq and current intelligence chiefs on the ground in Iraq regarding an immediate phased withdrawal?” Obama said, “I will give their counsel great weight. But, as commander in chief, it is my responsibility to make my own assessment of the situation. We must send a clear signal to the Iraqi political leadership that we are leaving Iraq on a timeline. Doing so will put pressure on those leaders to begin to resolve the political impasse at the heart of this civil war. But I also want to be clear about another thing. I am worried our Army is overstretched and that we have asked an awful lot from our military families. Many in our senior military leadership are worried about a plan that will keep 130,000 troops on the ground in Iraq for the foreseeable future. So, as commander in chief, I will also have to take into consideration the counsel of other senior military leaders who may be concerned that Iraq is undercutting our ability to confront other security challenges.” [Washington Post, 3/2/08]

March 2008: Obama Said The Size Of The Residual Force Will Depend On Consultation With Military Commanders And “Will Depend On The Circumstances On The Ground.” Obama said, “The precise size of the residual force will depend on consultations with our military commanders and will depend on the circumstances on the ground, including the willingness of the Iraqi government to move toward political accommodation. But let me be clear on one thing: I will end this war, and there will be far fewer Americans in Iraq conducting a much more limited set of missions that include counterterrorism and protection of our embassy and U.S. civilians.” [Washington Post, 3/2/08]

November 2007: Obama Said He Would Leave Residual Troops In Iraq Based On The Levels Of Violence, “It’s Not My Job To Specify Troop Levels.” Obama said, “If we see a serious effort by the Iraqi leadership to arrive at an agreement and an accommodation and you’ve seen continued reductions of violence, then you need one level of troop protection for the embassy…If things have gone to hell in a hand basket then you need another … It’s not my job to specify troop levels. My job is to tell our commanders on the ground, ‘Here’s your mission. Protect our embassy, protect our diplomats and our humanitarian workers in the area and make sure al Qaeda in Iraq, or other terrorist organizations inside of Iraq are not re-establishing bases there.” [Fosters, 11/28/07]

November 2007: Obama Said U.S. Has To Make Sure “We Are Not Just Willy-Nilly Removing Troops” And That It May “Take A Little Bit Longer” In Some Areas Where There Is Less Stability.

November 2007: Obama: “If The Commanders Tell Me They Need X, Y And Z, In Order To Accomplish The Very Narrow Mission That I’ve Laid Out, Than I Will Take That Into Consideration.” “You raise a series of legitimate questions. As commander in chief, I’m not going to leave trainers unprotected. In our counterterrorism efforts, I’m not going to have a situation where our efforts can’t be successful. We will structure those forces so they can be successful. We would still have human intelligence capabilities on the ground. Some of them would be civilian, as opposed to military, some would be operating out of our bases as well as our signal intelligence…But listen, I am not going to set up our troops for failure and I’m going to do something half-baked. If the commanders tell me that they need X, Y and Z, in order to accomplish the very narrow mission that I’ve laid out, than I will take that into consideration.” [New York Times, 11/1/07]

November 2007: Obama: “Even Something As Simple As Protecting Our Embassy Is Going To Dependent On What Is The Security In Baghdad…If There Is Some Sense Of Security, Then That Means One Level Of Force. If You Continue To Have Significant Sectarian Conflict, That Means Another.” “I have not ascribed particular numbers to that and I won’t for precisely the reason I was just talking to Michael about. I want to talk to military folks on the ground, No. 1. No. 2, a lot of it depends on what’s happened on the political front and the diplomatic front. Even something as simple as protecting our embassy is going to be dependent on what is the security environment in Baghdad. If there is some sense of security, then that means one level of force. If you continue to have significant sectarian conflict, that means another, but this is an area where Senator Clinton and I do have a significant contrast.” [New York Times, 11/1/07]

Saddam Hussein had his neighbors living with gas masks and Hillary’s position on the war was the right one “to send a strong message to Saddam to let the inspectors finish their work” too bad Bush had a sneaky different plan in mind and it really was McCains plan that stopped or slowed down the bloodbath with the surge, someone had to do somthing for those kids dying out there in Iraq and Obama was against the surge that (like it or not) stopped the bleeding.

The more this guy opens his mouth the stupier he sounds.
Doesnt Obama realize that the vast majority of his speeches have been recorded and written down. they have been recorded and/or written down only by the media but by his own campaign sight.

Every time he changes position and is caught, his come back is so lame. Obama doesnt even seem to have the common sense to check his own previous history before inserting foot.

Comment by tiberius | 2008-07-03 20:32:56

I wonder many Obama speeches you’ve listened to or read all the way through? I guess your main source of Obama info is right here.

You really think he sound stupid?

Obama graduated with a J.D. magna cum laude from Harvard University in 1991. While there, he was President of the Harvard Law Review.

He taught constitutional law at the University of Chicago Law School for twelve years, as a Lecturer for four years (1992–1996) and as a Senior Lecturer for eight years (1996–2004).

This is not the stuff of stupid.

Comment by beebop | 2008-07-03 20:39:24

Have you ever met a really book smart person who was dumb as a stump? He’s a classic example of someone who’s too smart (or believes he is) for his own good. Bush has an IQ of 125 … just sayin’

Comment by tiberius | 2008-07-03 20:59:00

Folks like that generally don’t get through Harvard, become president of the Review, become lecturers on constitutional law, get promoted to senior positions, and have meteoric rises in politics. I suspect that takes a lot more than an unusually high level of book smarts. They can also have their careers derailed anywhere along the way by any indication of impropriety, and tend to be looked at very closely in that regard.

Apparently Bush is of above average intelligence, despite all evidence to the contrary. I concede the point that smart ain’t everything. Some of history’s biggest troublemakers have been smart as hell.

Comment by Hope Floats | 2008-07-03 21:23:08

Obama’s already treading thin ice. The only reason he ran now instead of after his first year in the Senate is because he could have got caught up in a big scandal if he waited longer.

Comment by HRocks | 2008-07-03 21:51:24

Sounds like you’re impressed with his credentials but as a person he doesn’t live up to those credentials. IF he graduated magna cum laude, he should’ve been clerking for a Federal Judge. BTW, Harvard Law School is #4 in the nation. He got to be the editor of the Law Review thru affirmative action, BTW Hillary served on the Board of Editors of the Yale Review of Law and Social Action but she didn’t brag about it.Hillary is a member of The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi (or simply Phi Kappa Phi) is the oldest, largest and most selective all-discipline honor society for colleges or universities in the United States. Obama is not a member of this organization.

It appears to me that Obama has been copying Hillary for many years now.

BHO is basically winging it on the campaign trail. From one day to the next, one week to the next, one month to the next, he is going say one thing and then another. Do one thing and then do another. His supporters are fools. Susan you are so absolutely dead on the money about the main reason why so many of his supporters jumped on his bandwagon was because of that over-hyped Iraq War speech. Now, they’ll claim he has to change things up because he’s gotten new information. Bullshit. Samantha Power told the world months ago that he was lying about his true intentions for that war.

So, to answer the question about suckers…yes.

Obama was against the surge and that shows his lack of judgement. This is not about politics, you don’t let kids die so you can win votes, thank god for McCain on this issue. Mabe the fact that McCain unlike Bush or Obama or Obushama has been thru war in the pass does give him better judgement on the reality of war.

Not much money but a few dollars. If enough do it he could run an anti-war ad, scoop up former kool-aid drinkers and either strike fear into the heart of the DNC forcing them to vote for Hillary or swipe votes away from Obama and allow McCain to win.

Yet, legions of supporters flocked to Obama based on that one speech. Now Obama has adopted a revisionist Iraq policy. “Never give a sucker an even break.” Is W.C. Fields now an Obama consultant?
