Whither the Teachers’ Unions? The Obama/Ayers Link

bo-school.jpgAll of a sudden, the American Federation of Teachers seems to have decided it is in their best interest to rise to the defense of Obama and his education advisor Linda Darling-Hammond. In particular, they do not want anyone looking too closely at the long-standing relationship between Bill Ayers and their preferred presidential candidate, Senator Obama.

Well, not really all of a sudden, it’s just a few days after the AFL-CIO decided to throw in the towel and endorse Obama over Clinton now that Clinton has put her campaign on ice.  And just a few days before Obama is scheduled to appear before the national conventions of both of the major teachers’ unions.  The AFT has recommended its convention meeting next week in Chicago endorse Obama, as has the National Education Association, before which Obama speaks tomorrow, July 5.

When I pointed out at the Edwize Blog sponsored by the United Federation of Teachers, the big New York division of the AFL-CIO affiliated AFT, that Darling-Hammond backs the same key policy proposal (repayment of centuries of “education debt” to people of color) as Bill Ayers, long-time education advocate and co-worker of Obama, and that Ayers and Obama are far from being “casual acquaintances” as Leo Casey of the AFT had contended, Casey replied with the following false claims on the Democratic Left Yahoo group:

1) that I had painted an “unrecognizable caricature” of Darling-Hammond;

2) that I had contended that the $110 million Chicago Annenberg Challenge that Ayers and Obama ran together for five years was a “political front” for Ayers and his politics;

3) that Obama had only a “quite superficial grasp of what [was] going on” at the Annenberg Challenge the board of which he chaired and was not “involve[d] in the nitty-gritty” of the five year long project and that he was only “lending..his name and his ability to make a couple of telephone calls to get things done.”

4) that I contended there was “some sort of sinister hidden connection between Obama and Ayers”

None of this is true and Casey provides no documentation at all for any of his specious contentions.  I wrote the following reply to both Democratic Left and Edwize, but so far neither site has “approved” my posts (pretty remarkable for Democratic Left, a site that considers itself an opponent of authoritarianism in modern political life) so I am putting up a copy here:

Well, at least Leo now seems to be admitting that Ayers and Obama were more than “casual acquaintances” as he asserted on Democratic Left and on Edwize.

So now on to the second line of defense.

Frankly, I am not sure what that is because I only assert two things: Obama and Ayers have a longstanding political relationship - which is clear from the public record; and two, Ayers and Darling-Hammond are now advocating a race-based solution to education - the repayment of centuries of “education debt” to people of color or, in other words, reparations. Nothing you have said contradicts this.

I did not paint a portrait of Darling-Hammond or caricature her as you have speciously asserted. I only stated the facts as supported by her public record. She and I have exchanged emails on this issue and this is reported on my blog. She herself has never suggested that I have made any factually incorrect statements about her.

I never suggested the Annenberg Challenge which Obama and Ayers ran together, though not alone, was a political front as you, again without substantiation, contend I did. In fact, Ayers was quite open about his political goals and those goals run right through the lengthy grant proposal, the annual reports of the organization and its board minutes, which I have reviewed (though some board minutes were not provided me).

Some in Chicago shared those goals. Some understood the background of his views and others did not. I view the local schools councils as an attempt to create a new center of power that was aimed at the power of the teachers’ union. They were set up in the wake of an unpopular teachers strike in 1987. Obama and Ayers were active in the lobbying effort for that “radical” reform, as Ayers called it in his proposal to the Annenberg Foundation.

I do not consider such local councils a democratic step forward for school progress, but rather as a potential base of power for those with a different kind of agenda, based on racial politics and “social justice” teaching. A genuine democratic alternative would be built, as Dorothy Shipps has written, in district wide assemblies elected by the public that are transparent and accountable.

I have not imputed any particular agenda to Ayers, Obama or Darling-Hammond, other than to note that Ayers and Darling-Hammond support repayment of the education debt as a top priority. Obama has not stated what his views are on this very clearly though he indicated sympathy for the idea while campaigning in South Carolina.

Given the long and close ties between Ayers and Obama and the professional ties among education debt repayment advocates Ayers, Darling-Hammond and Ladson-Billings, it is reasonable to ask if this kind of race-based approach to educational problems is going to be part of the Obama presidency.

Obama was not as you contend an elected official when he first worked on school reform with Ayers in the late 80s, nor was he even yet a candidate when he became Chairman of the board of the Annenberg Challenge in 1995. He was a relative unknown and quite a junior person at that point, just two years out of law school when Ayers submitted the grant proposal, with only a voter registration drive to his credit since leaving Harvard.

Thus, I think it is a fair question to ask why Obama would have been chosen to head up such a prestigious effort as the $110 million Annenberg Challenge. I think Ayers backed him because he knew he could rely on Obama to support Ayers’ agenda of propping up the troubling and troubled local schools councils.

And, in fact, the record of the Challenge - its annual reports, mid term reports and board minutes - indicate that that is precisely what happened. Even when concerns were raised by a business sector representative on the board that the councils represented a potential “political threat” to school principals (and unions??) Obama backed Ayers in pushing money into the school council election process.

Finally, when you suggest that Obama played no significant role in directing the Challenge, are you suggesting that as chairman of the board of a major non profit corporation in the state of Illinois, that Obama had a hands-off attitude? That he was NOT aware that the Challenge was signing off on, for example, a $175,000 grant to Ayers buddy Mike Klonsky, as they did in 1995 for the Small Schools Workshop Klonsky was recruited to head up by Ayers? That suggests to me a problem of fiduciary duty. Quite unlikely for a Harvard Law School graduate - and frankly, more worrying for me about Obama if true.

No, I think Obama knew exactly what he was doing when he voted as a board member to approve the disbursement of millions of dollars in order to intervene in the Chicago school wars. And so did Ayers. They were using each other for advancement of their careers and their shared political perspective on education policy.

The Challenge ended in 2001. It is certainly reasonable for voters to ask seven years later for Obama to explain the relationship and Ayers’ influence on his approach to education policy.

While no one could, or should, impute to Obama any support for the terroristic activity of Ayers, Dohrn and others, there is an important connection between Ayers’ politics then and his approach to education policy today: Ayers and the Weather Underground promoted a politics built around the absurd idea of “white supremacy,” which Ayers calls even today the “monster in the room” at the heart of American life.

This was linked to another idea that was widely held among the maoist elements that took hold in the early 70s in the US: that American workers and their unions were part of a giant labor aristocracy that exploited workers of the south, the so-called Third World. Inside the US, the Weather Underground argued that global form of “unequal exchange” was reproduced in the relationship between white and black workers.

Thus, when an idea like repayment of centuries of accumulated “education debt” is proposed as the top priority of the next federal government as it has been by Darling-Hammond, Ladson-Billings and Bill Ayers, all of whom have links to Obama it is reasonable to ask what Obama’s view are on such a critical issue. The presumptive nominee has yet to explain how it is that his education advisor can promote such an idea and yet he remains silent on it.

I would think the members of America’s teachers’ unions would like to know the answers to such questions as well before they decide how to approach the upcoming elections.

OK, if you ignore the past of Ayers (and Democrats are supposed to believe in rehabilitation (hence why the Clintons gave the Weathermen a Presidential pardon), they have succeeded in the most succesful turn around of Chicago schools ever. So if you are a true Democrat, appreciate the chances a decent education gives you WHAT THE FUCK IS THE PROBLEM?

US schools, like US healthcare are in an awful state. It does not take an American to know that. However what have the Dems done in Chicago? They have pulled many - indeed not all - schools up allowing children to obtain opportunities never thought possible before; including President.

Put down the bong. You have no clue what you are talking about. I’m in Chicago too, like the other poster above. If I had children, I wouldn’t dare send them to Chicago public schools. I have two friends that quit Chi p/s because they couldn’t stand the way the students would even treat the teachers. The stress they say was unbelievable.

Obama doesn’t care, he sends his kids to private schools. What a hypocrite.

The reforms pushed by Ayers and Obama at Annenberg were a failure as documented thoroughly by the Annenberg Challenge’s own research Arm, the Chicago School Research Consortium. They concluded that there was “no” positive effect from the $110 million spent by Ayers and Obama over six years.

The schools management was re-centralized in the hands of the mayor in the mid 90s and that is the source of any changes that you speak of.

Off Topic:

Just went over to Huff Puff, article by Lynn Sweet. Here is a small part of what she mentions:

Obama mulling major speech in front of Berlin’s Brandenburg gate; to evoke, Reagan, Kennedy. “Ich bin ein Obama”
WASHINGTON–A German friend passed along the news Saturday that local sources in Berlin are confirming that the Obama campaign was in contact with city authorities to discuss the possibility of presumptive Democratic nominee Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) delivering an outdoor address in front of the Brandenburg gate. The thinking is Obama would follow in the footsteps of two very famous Cold War-era speeches of U.S. presidents speaking in Germany: JFK “Ich bin ein Berliner” and Reagan “tear down this wall.” It would probably be Obama’s only public speech during upcoming visits to Germany, France and England on a swing to include stops in Israel and Jordan. There is still no date for the trip. German news sources are reporting the Obama team is working on a visit during the “second half of this month”.
,
Spiegel Online International reports that an Obama visit to Berlin his month “looks likely” with Chancellor Angela Merkel and Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

I am unable to give you the link, because I don’t know how too.

The Europeans have actual journalists and multiple news sources.

I’ve lived in Germany. Even the young folk there are not easily fooled. The older folk will not go for any Nuremberg type rallies.

By the way, if he was so concerned about Europe, why couldn’t he hold hearings of his committee?

He’s only now interested in European affairs because he thinks it will get him elected.

Now which candidate will do “whatever it takes” to get elected? Looks like that prize goes to Obama.

They’d rather see the world destroyed by McCrazy in a fiery WWIII apocalypse than vote for the candidate who’s policies are virtually identical to the primary candidate who lost (and even further to the left on foreign policy). They are hollow shells of people, burned away from the inside out by mindless rage, and that is why they will remain isolated and bitter, unable to expand beyond squalid hate forums such as this, into the general population. You’ve seen first hand that this is not exactly a welcoming place. Do you think they are preaching to anyone but their own self pitying choir? Actually, he’s just losing bitter dead-enders who are on the die-off end of the demographic spectrum, and who are being replaced by new younger voters, as evidenced by the rampant hostility toward anyone under 40, on here. In fact, he’s winning all traditionally democratic demographics, including women, except for, surprise surprise, white people over 65. He’s not losing the democratic party, he’s just changing the dynamic from older to younger.

The opportunity for Hillary exists if Obama would fall way behind in the polls vs. McCain causing the Democrats to feel Obama is too flawed to nominate. That has not happened.

This seems to be due to a huge cult base that developed and these people will follow Obama regardless of his shady past, what he does, or what he says. They are willing to fill stadiums like zombies and applaud anything Obama does including blowing his nose into a microphone for them to hear.

Obama’s following reminds me of the Jim Jones cult where people were willing to follow that nut to Guyana, live in a socialist society created by Jones called “Jonestown”, and ultimately kill themselves on Jones’ command.

Ahh..i was in Paris last month and he was not wanted there..in fact everywhere i went people kept telling me..get Hillary in..do not go Obama..and i heard that everywhere..even cab drivers..so i do not know where you are getting the bullshit Obama is liked in Europe..more propaganda i guess,…oh and as a Flight crew of a msjor airline for 33 yrs..i flew Paris exclusively for about 26 of those years..i have many friends all over Paris..no one wanted to see us stuck with Obama..not do the French want to be stuck with Obama as our pres..everywhere i went the French i know kept saying..we beg you for Hillary..

So please “believe” poster for Obama.. do not make general statements like quote ” And he will get a huge, cheering crowd. Obama is much admired in Europe”

…when is the last time you were in Europe to take a poll????????

So, there’s this amazing thing on the internets called google, and it actually lets you do things like find real polls, so that the rest of us don’t have to depend on anti-Obama fanatics and their “friends in Paris”, to inform us of foreign public opinion. So I tried it out, and I found this precious nugget:

“In France, historically the European country with the strongest anti-American sentiment, 65 per cent would back Mr Obama.”

Kinda sinks your whole cock charade about exclusive knowledge of what Europe really wants, ey?

Comment by Time for Your Medication | 2008-07-06 06:38:15

wailing over the “death of democracy”. This democracy has been dying for the last 160 years, thanks to legalized corporate and banking bribery. What was Hillary going to do about that? Jack shit, that’s what. And suckers like you believed all that BS she faked about “fighting special interests”, while all the while taking their money, hand over fist. That’s as blindly naive as believing a police chief who says he will crack down on the mob, while he gets paid off by the mob.

Further more, an election is a method of choosing a candidate that the voters want, and if it does not result in choosing who the voters want, it loses all of that sacred power you folks get so worked up about. Well, seeing as Obama was consistently ahead of Hillary in all of the polls from about a week after the first super Tuesday till the very end, guess what? The winner was the candidate that most voters wanted. The only reason Hillary was even close was because of her name recognition early in the race. She got the, “duuuuh, I’ll vote for the familiar face”, vote. Once Obama got the same news coverage, she lost that name recognition edge, and never recovered.

Not only that, but Obama would be ahead by millions of votes if the caucus states were popular vote states. Winning 5% or 10% of 10 million nets you a hell of allot more than winning 20% of 100 thousand.

Sorry, I know this isn’t the home of rational thought.

Our school system here is in SHAMBLES. They have abused Affirmative Action, dumbed down our students, have no accountability for them to succeed therefore they graduate wo knowing basic math and reading skills. The schools also misuse tax dollars. They system is funded by property taxes. Last year they tried to get a $1 billion dollar school renovation project passed. Homeowners soundly defeated it in a petition. The schools spent money on an in ground pool at one school and a baseball stadium at another just a few years ago. If the schools are in such bad shape physically, why were they wasting money on things like that?? The schools are just as crooked as all of the other things that are financed by taxes. Their credibility and endorsement doesn’t mean shit to me.

It’s not the schools that are a problem, it’s the parents of the students. I don’t know anything about raising children but in my day they used violence to get you to conform, it seemed to work pretty well. Now the children tell the parents and the teachers to go screw themselves and the kids tell the parents what to do, what a pity.

Comment by Hillaryormccain08 | 2008-07-06 00:18:52

I completely agree with you. I have raised six kids and I am sorry but in my house I am the boss. You go to school and you be on time everyday. You will watch your mouth with the teachers because if your in trouble in school your in trouble at home. That is how I raised them. If I can live in the Ghetto and raise good kids what’s up with parents in Middle class or Upper class neighborhood. I say Obama needs to send his kids to Chigico Public schools if they are so great.

I don’t have a college degree personally, but my wife have a Master. She don’t seem to have a problem with my intel. That also didn’t stop me from able to retire if I want any time since my 33rd birthday. That coming from an immigrant, vet and Hardly speaking english just 20 years ago. A “decent education” is what you make of it.

As proof of the this, all one needs to do is look at BO’s ignorance on a whole slew subjects. ESPECIALLY the U.S. Constitution.

Comment by andySF | 2008-07-06 00:38:42

I think the thing with poeple now days, is the fact that they don’t use common sense. I look at education as programing that goes into a computer when it was first bought. You need a lot of upgrade along the way for everyday use. The typical Obama supporter don’t gether as much information as they could, and sticking to the initial input from none other than Obama Capm. Real world experience count and porper use of their reasoning skill is the most important, and they fail to use it. Just as this so call UK person who refuse to even try to understand other people’s reason, and quick to judge people explains it.

I seem a lot of those O supporters calling people stupid, low IQ, low inform, racist just because people don’t agree with them. What they don’t understand is that some of us have most higher IQ that average, succed in life and are just more free thinking than they are. I am sure that when they grow up, they may become more wise. But that may be to much to hope for.

Obama is just a fraud to me. Nothing more.

Well, today Obama told the teachers union that he supports merit pay and was booed. This is an example of Obama’s willingness to say things in front of crowds that the group won’t support.

But the cheers briefly turned to boos when Obama brought up his proposal to pay teachers more if their students perform well on tests or if teachers learn new skills, take on added responsibilities, such as mentoring, or teach in hard-to-staff schools.

“In some places we’ve already seen that it’s possible to find new ways to increase teacher pay that are developed with teachers, not imposed on teachers,” he said, the crowd’s boos engulfing the rest of his thought. The teachers did the same when Obama mentioned the plan at NEA’s meeting last year in Philadelphia.

“I know this wasn’t necessarily the most popular part of my speech last year,” he said, “but I said it then and I say it again today because it’s what I believe.”

Rather than call names, perhaps you could discuss why you think Obama would make a speech to a group that includes a position they disagree with?

I mean, is it at all possible for people to discuss anything at this site? The main response seems to be angry name-calling.

Comment by tampagurl | 2008-07-05 20:43:33

Who knows why Obama says what he does.I’m sure we’ll find out later that some larger group is for merit pay. At any rate give him a week and he’ll change his position. One minute he’s for NAFTA and the next against it. I imagine he does it for political reasons even though he was suppose to be the candidate of change. But you see “Believe” he is just like every other politician, we are just calling him out on it.

Oh and stop trying to act like you don’t instigate shit here.

Having installed tecnology system that evaluate k12 student progress, I can tell you not one teacher I have met in the entire county thinks merit pay is anything but nonsense and look at these eval systems and Merit pay as a distraction.

Do we have good and bad teachers? Sure. Merit pay is a DSA meme. Good luck with it.

Who reached acrossed the aisle more to garner bi-partisian support to end the dead-lock? Hillary! Whose own party members have criticized Nobama for tagging his name on legislation, doing no work, put showing up for the press conferences? Nobama the empty suit!

Comment by Time for Your Medication | 2008-07-06 08:12:46

180? Are you smoking crack? Either you pulled that number from your ass, or you severely spinning some numbers. I’ll make it simple for you.

Drafted and passed by Hillary:

S.694 : A bill to direct the Secretary of Transportation to issue regulations to reduce the incidence of child injury and death occurring inside or outside of light motor vehicles, and for other purposes. (This is currently in conference committee to reconcile difference with the House bill)
Passed in the Senate:

S.CON.RES.27 : A concurrent resolution supporting the goals and ideals of “National Purple Heart Recognition Day”.

S.RES.21 : A resolution recognizing the uncommon valor of Wesley Autrey of New York, New York

S.RES.92 : A resolution calling for the immediate and unconditional release of soldiers of Israel held captive by Hamas and Hezbollah.

S.RES.141 : A resolution urging all member countries of the International Commission of the International Tracing Service who have yet to ratify the May 2006 amendments to the 1955 Bonn Accords to expedite the ratification process to allow for open access to the Holocaust archives located at Bad Arolsen, Germany.

S.RES.222 : A resolution supporting the goals and ideals of Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month.

S.AMDT.666 to H.R.1591 To link award fees under Department of Homeland Security contracts to successful acquisition outcomes under such contracts.

S.AMDT.2047 to H.R.1585 To specify additional individuals eligible to transportation for survivors of deceased members of the Armed Forces to attend their burial ceremonies.

S.AMDT.2108 to H.R.1585 To require a report on the planning and implementation of the policy of the United States toward Darfur.

S.AMDT.2390 to H.R.2638 To require that all contracts of the Department of Homeland Security that provide award fees link such fees to successful acquisition outcomes.

S.AMDT.2474 to H.R.2638 To ensure that the Federal Protective Service has adequate personnel.

S.AMDT.2823 to H.R.3074 To require a report on plans to alleviate congestion and flight delays in the New York/New Jersey/Philadelphia Airspace.

S.AMDT.2917 to H.R.1585 To extend and enhance the authority for temporary lodging expenses for members of the Armed Forces in areas subject to a major disaster declaration or for installations experiencing a sudden increase in personnel levels.

That’s it. Equal to, even arguably less substantial than, Obama’s accomplishments. Another Hillary myth bites the dust in the face of knowledge. Don’t worry, just drink some more Clinton Cult Family Kool-Aid.

ON JULY 3RD (saw this on tm)

Hundreds of Central New Yorkers flocked to Hanover Square this morning to hear Sen. Hillary Clinton talk about renewable energy and show their support for Clinton in her first visit to Upstate New York since she withdrew from the presidential race. … .. “We will have a new president in January and one I am very confident will have the vision to bring our country together,” Clinton said during her speech.

The crowd of several hundred responded to Clinton like she was a rock star, using cell phones to snap pictures, hugging her, and asking for her autograph on any scrap of paper they could find.

Comment by Frau Fabrissina | 2008-07-05 20:12:32

We must strive together, if we can fight together

The realization almost always prompts a double take, a moment of inspection, maybe even a debate: Is baby-faced Barack Obama, the symbol of a younger political generation, actually aging in front of us?

By his own admission this week, “the gray is coming quick,” so that it now dusts his head like snowflakes. The laugh lines cut a little deeper, and the crow’s-feet around his eyes appear slightly more pronounced.

The presidency ages presidents, but so, it seems, has the longest campaign in modern history aged a candidate.

funny we were speculating last night:
1) is he dying his hair gray to look more mature (ridiculous & pathetic)…
or
2) is he refraining from dying it black to appear more mature (formerly vain & now ridiculous)…

is either scenario “presidential”?

Clinton Letter to Superdelegates
Hillary Clinton

(Note: the following is the text of a letter sent by Hillary Clinton yesterday to all Democratic super delegates.)

Dear ___________,

The stakes in this election are so high: with two wars abroad, our economy in crisis here at home, and so many families struggling across America, the need for new leadership has never been greater.

At this point, we do not yet have a nominee - and when the last votes are cast on June 3, neither Senator Obama nor I will have secured the nomination. It will be up to automatic delegates like you to help choose our party’s nominee, and I would like to tell you why I believe I am the stronger candidate against Senator McCain and would be the best President and Commander in Chief.

Voters in every state have made it clear that they want to be heard and counted as part of this historic race. And as we reach the end of the primary season, more than 17 million people have supported me in my effort to become the Democratic nominee - more people than have ever voted for a potential nominee in the history of our party. In the past two weeks alone, record numbers of voters participated in the West Virginia and Kentucky primaries. And with 40 and 35 point margins of victory, it is clear that even when voters are repeatedly told this race is over, they’re not giving up on me - and I am not giving up on them either.

well I did not write the above post, we do not even have a UK “Health Plane” and I would not comment on the Canadian system.

We do not even have a health care “plan” in the way proposed by Hillary. We have a universal, largely free at the point of use, tax payer funded national health service. A service that has worked well for 60 years. There are no forms, no credit checks. Treatment is given according to medical need. There are no long queues for major or emergency operations. There are few queues for minor non emergency operations.

There is a flourishing Private sector market, with insurance rates that are significantly cheaper than the most basic of US Insurance packages.

UK Tax rates are broadly equivalent to yours (even though we have an awful Labour Government). We spend far less on healthcare overall than the US per person and have much better results.

No his plan is not universal as there are no mandates to force private health insurance on to the poor prior to reforming the insurance market. He will however be taking advice from the strongest proponents of universal health care - the Edwards family.

Comment by hank48188 | 2008-07-06 11:12:05

I don’t have a problem with lower-income folks not having healthcare insurance, but I DO have a problem with folks that have high incomes refusing to buy heathcare insurance. 50% of the folks earning 10 times the poverty level DO NOT BUY INSURANCE if they don’t get it from their job. These high-earners are a drain on everyone that does have insurance, they are bloodsuckers. You can read about this at (www.kff.org) The Kaiser Family Foundation, the piece is called “How Non-Group Health Coverage Varies With Income” The only way these folks will cover themselves is Gov’t mandate and I support that action.

Although I understand the logic behind this, getting rid of the electoral college would mean that basically 40 of the US States would never see a Presidential candidate. The campaigns would simply focus on the most populous City States.

Do all of us a favor, okay? If any of The Pretender’s trolls post here, let’s not stoop to their level if they post vulgar stuff. We’re a lot better than that.

RE: Hillary and tough schools…

Her recent speech at the graduation of the school in the Bronx…she said she had worked on opening a school as part of the creation of “smaller” schools for kids with education problems…

That sounds a lot less problematical than the Obama situation…

Remember the crowded Obama rally in Portland Oregon?

Well I’m posting the festival going on this weekend so you’ll see a picture of what it normally looks like.
People came out for the venue and not necessarily Obama.

Scroll to the bottom for the picture of this weekends venue event. It’s early morning so the crowd is not as thick yet but it holds 20 to 30 thousand people maximum. The news skewed the 75,000 for Obama rally. (this section is only a portion of the waterfront that spans for miles)
Obama supporters claim he had the biggest rally in history at the Portland waterfront so I’m posting the truth here. This crowd is every weekend in Summer.
This is a wide lens view and Obamas was a close up view.

Steve Diamond: I know you hit a nerve and I really enjoy reading your writings.

Keep at it.

Steve Diamond:
What a great and informative post. I have long wondered about Obama’s views on reparations for slavery, as the subject does come up on other blogs on the posts of some of the more angry-sounding Obama supporters. So now this accumlated “education debt”, another sort of reparation, is another matter on which Obama needs to be clear on his position.

There are simply too many unanswered questions surrounding Obama, and that the MSM still seems not at all inclined to pursue anything beyond the superficial scares the bejesus out of me.

Hey Hank,

Stay away form that. Man, that is some gruesome stuff. Can you imagine what that swine is doing.

Leave well enough alone. Pass over it. Watch out where you step.

Disgusting. Yechchchch.

Sickening.

Ignore it.

Obama’s a privatizer. Merit pay? That’s just privatization by another name. I can’t believe the teacher’s unions or ANY unions would support him.

They’re fools. He’s a Republican stalking horse candidate, a manchurian candidate.

Merit pay?

unthinkable. elitist. discriminates unfairly against time servers.

I wonder if Obama thinks his net worth is a form of merit pay.

BTW how much were those avaricious ambitious Clinton’s worth after 8 years in the White House. Not much, IIRC.

Comment by rjj | 2008-07-06 10:43:24

pretend that was a rhetorical question.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/03/24/AR2007032400305_pf.html

Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter came to the White House without much money …. Clinton and her husband, former president Bill Clinton, left office in debt, but both have written bestselling biographies. Former president Clinton has collected nearly $40 million in speaking fees since leaving office.

They had legal obligations to settle, of course, but clearly they did not enrich themselves in office.

One can only admire Obama’s ability to turn public office to personal advantage.

Not only that. With one exception among the three leading Republicans and three leading Democrats, the contenders each appear to be worth tens of millions.

The exception: Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.). As a community organizer-turned-law professor-turned-state senator-turned U.S. senator, the bulk of Obama’s wealth has come only in the past few years, with the huge success of his second book, ” The Audacity of Hope.”

You would think he had written Harry Potter. How many copies did those two books sell as of 2007? People don’t make pisspots of money on books unless they are mega-best sellers with movie rights. Obama’s success resembles George Dubya’s success as an entrepreneur.

Obama’s book contracts, advances, and publication history would be something to look at. What did he do, get himself an agent? Submit a draft to an editor? Has anybody done so?

If Barack Obama is elected in 2008, expect to see a PUMA or two sneak into Congress. And expect a few Congresswomen and Senators to ally with them. Hillary herself will keep her distance.

Is this a trap? Fear? You better believe it, Buster.

~~~ sheesh, it really getting scary out there.
Hi Patti -
I think you may have taken the phrase “sneak” in a way different than I intended it. Assuming Barack Obama is the nominee, and PUMAs continue to reject him and the Democratic Party - and assuming they do not embrace the conservative ideology - then it seems that to get elected to Congress without fully accepting the party you are running with, you would need to do a bit of sneaking.
As I think is clear from my piece - I’m not afraid of PUMAs and I think they may be a force that has some staying power. However, as much as I may admire their persistence and dedication, I think they are profoundly mistaken in their view of recent events and of the immediate course for the future.
