WSJ: “Obama Faces Resistance From Top Supporters of Clinton”

Here’s the first part of a subscription-only article in today’s Wall Street Journal:

Sen. Barack Obama, the presumed Democratic presidential nominee, faces dissent from dozens of top fund-raisers and other supporters of former rival Sen. Hillary Clinton, who are angry over how she was treated during their bruising primary battle and are hesitating to back Sen. Obama.

Some leading Clinton supporters are starting new Web sites or political action committees aimed at prodding Sen. Obama on issues or pressuring him to give Sen. Clinton a big role in the general-election campaign. People familiar with the matter say the effort involves dozens of the roughly 300 Clinton “Hillraisers,” individuals who raised at least $100,000 …

Mark Halperin’s blog notes, in his red font signaling that “this is important”:

Adds the McCain camp is trying to capitalize on disaffected Clinton supporters, roughly two dozen big Clinton backers are looking to meet soon with McCain adviser Fiorina.

No wonder CNN’s latest poll is showing a drop in the number of Hillary supporters who are willing to vote for Barack Obama.

If we weren’t convinced during the primary that we couldn’t vote for Obama, his flip-flops and abandonment of his core supporters should give any REAL Democrat pause.

The other title used for this same article:

“Obama Faces ‘Hillraiser’ Backlash”

Are these the same Clinton supporters that Obama met with to try to get them to donate to his campaign? Hmmm. Party unity isn’t working, is it? Inch by inch, row by row, Hillary’s garden is going to grow!

Comment by standard | 2008-07-07 10:07:23

if McCain is smart he will realize that an influx of thoughtful, common-sense, informed voters will nourish the Republican party.
Without a doubt there are members who abhor running on misinforming easy targets.

Comment by standard | 2008-07-07 10:12:53

instead of feeling ourselves “disenfranchised,” we should realize that we are desirable, and highly sought after.
We come out of the common-sense sector – no radical agendas or dreams.

I hope that McCain would consider a few tweaks, because the benefits of having us in his camp, and in his party would be invaluable.

Comment by PhxNickD | 2008-07-07 10:48:38

i agree with that. his endorsement of the anti-gay marriage bill in CA did not bode well with Hillary’s gay & lesbian voters who were planning on voting McCain. he should have stayed neutral.

Comment by believe | 2008-07-07 11:34:27

You have your facts wrong. Obama is opposed to the initiative that would overturn gay marriage in CA.

Presidential candidate Barack Obama has come out against a ballot measure that seeks to outlaw same-sex marriage.

A club for gay Democrats in San Francisco says it solicited a statement from the Illinois senator’s campaign in which he called the proposed constitutional amendment “divisive and discriminatory.”

Obama also extended congratulations to gay and lesbian newlyweds who have gotten married in California over the last two weeks.

His letter was read aloud at the Alice B. Toklas LGBT Democratic Club’s annual gay pride breakfast on Sunday.

Last week, Republican rival, Sen. John McCain, endorsed the gay marriage ban that is slated to appear on the November ballot.

Presidential candidate Barack Obama has come out against a ballot measure that seeks to outlaw same-sex marriage.
“Who in their right mind would want
the same sex all the time. I enjoy
a little diversity once in a while and
am not adverse to a little ‘down-low’ myself”, the candidate said.
While Obama partied at
A club for gay Democrats in San Francisco the club solicited a statement from the Illinois senator’s campaign in which he called the proposed constitutional amendment “divisive and discriminatory.”
The senator then said, “Hey Bogart! you
going to pass that pipe or what?”

Fixed it for you.

McCain has the SAME exact position and record on same sex marriage as John Kerry.

Also McCain has met with a number lesbian, gay and even transgender lifelong Democrats who supported Hillary. He was very open and straight forward in engaging them. Also he is not a neo-con and he isn’t comfortable with the Federal government getting involved in private issues.

If Obama really wanted to take a stand against discrimination he wouldn’t have vetted homophobic rev James Meeks to be a delegate at the Denver Convention.

As I am sure you are aware John and Hillary have a real admiration, respect & genuine fondness of eachother.

Comment by MaryPat | 2008-07-07 16:35:05

McCain has a real opportunity to coalesce the centrist voters that dominate the American electorate. But first he has to resist the temptation to pander to the rightwing whackjobs who have hijacked the Republican Party in recent elections. And then he has to enthusiastically reach out to Hillary’s supporters–which, to his credit, he does seem to be doing, unlike his “don’t need ‘em” opponent.

McCain is in a unique position because he does have an independent streak, and has a record of working across the aisle. After the past couple of weeks, the voters are unsure what Obama stands for, and who can blame them? McCain needs to step into the vacuum and play the integrity/experience card big time. NOW. If he waits ’til after the convention, he may have missed his best chance to take Obama down.

The KEY PROTEST

HOW:

We hold our key rings over our head and shake them…or just hold them in our hand, upraised like the PUMA fist.

WHY:

Keys are easy to carry, everyone has them, they can’t take them away from us at the rallys, they can’t id us before our protest…AND no one has used it yet.

SYMBOLISM:

1. McCain is afraid of the sound of keys because he would hear the rattle of the keys as the Vietnam guards came to torture him. Lets use the ekys to show the difference between McCains courage and character and Obama’s lack of courage and character.

2. Hillary won the KEY swing states.

Lets take this protest method and make it our signature!!!!!

Which is why Obama needs to bring 75,000 of his thugs to Denver to make sure the superdelegates remain intimidated and don’t dare make a peep supporting Clinton – not in the face of 75,000 rabid Obama jackboots.

This is the most egregious takeover of a political process I have ever seen in Amerika – in all “57″ of the states.

Chicago only needed Seven to bring the DNC to its knees. Overkill Obama now is bringing in 75,000 with all his campaign cash to burn to make sure Dems salivate at his feet.

Net result: all show and no go for Obama. He is going to run out of paid spectacle before November. And keep in mind this is the same man who refuses to do “townhall”, but loves a paid crowd and a teleprompter.

I saw Carly Fiorina on the news shows this morning. When asked by msnbc about meeting with Clinton supporters, she was very circumspect. She said Hillary supporters are interested in learning more about McCain’s policies so they can make an informed judgement. Seems the McCain camp is steering clear for the moment of exploiting the deep divisions in our party…methinks they have a plan…what say you?

Comment by Five Thirty | 2008-07-07 10:01:30

Plan: R.E.S.P.E.C.T. !

Comment by kenoshaMarge | 2008-07-07 10:16:05

Wouldn’t that be refreshing after the way we’ve been treated by our own party.

Carley Fiorina is very sharp and a good spokesperson for McCain IMO. Not too apt to trip over her own tongue like so many do.

Comment by sowsear | 2008-07-07 12:47:43

If BO keeps turning right, he could pick up the right wing conservatives. Think what McCain could do if he could get the Repubs to put Hillary on as McCain’s VP. What an unexpected switch that would be for Rove and Co.

Comment by jm | 2008-07-07 22:10:46

While it may be quite impossible, sowsear, now that’s a ticket worth voting for! Imagine Hill transforming the Repubs and the Dems left to be the last party as they now deserve.

This spoken by a prior life long Dem.

Many progressives for Obama have seen the light and Count Us Out would like to take this time to invite you to join us.

Come on! Let’s UNITE and get this country back on the right track.

To all of our PUMA Brothers and Sisters, Count Us Out asks you to show the former Obama supporters some PUMA LOVE!

To the former Obama supporters, many of whom have worked side by side with us for many years, we want you to know that we were never against you. We opposed Obama and we simply did not join you in your support of him. Let’s let bygones be bygones. We’ve got room for you under the PUMA tent!

We have been friends and allies for a long time and we look forward, once again, to joining our efforts with yours as we work toward our common goals.

Again, we say WELCOME, WELCOME, WELCOME to the many Obama supporters who now know that Obama wasn’t all he was cracked up to be. By now, everyone who cares about “the issues” has seen Obama unravel in front of their eyes. He has exposed himself as an unprincipled, empty suit.

It’s NOT too late to send Obama’s ass back to the US Senate and that is exactly what we intend to do.

As they say, “Let’s really get this party started!”

Yes, the country comes first and always. Obama is simply not good for the United States. This is truly an election in which things are not as they appear. We get glimpses of the real Obama now and again, especially lately with all of his so-called “flip flops.” Actually, they are not “flip flops” at all because he would have had to represent clear positions on issues prior to “flip flopping.” Obama’s positions were never clear. He snared supporters with pretty words like “hope” and “change” and remained very low on specifics. Now some of his supporters are angry about “flip flops,” when, in fact, Obama never promised them the rose garden they thought they were getting. It’s time to wake up! BTW, the WSJ article mentions WePAC. I went over to their site and they talk about a 48 hour drive to wipe out Hillary’s debt. The time is running out to get this done. Please give up something — extra cup of coffee, cocktail, a pack of butts, a manicure, a 6-pack, organic bananas, whatever — and send a check made out to Hillary Clinton for President. Money sent this way cannot be used for any other purpose. Let’s show Madame President that we are behind her!

He doesn’t dive in and solve problems.

There’s a piece in the NYT on his years as a community organizer. Nice, got everyone organized, but no results.
That’s the bottom line.
He didn’t start the community organizing, he was hired to do a job. Did a fine job. Left because it did not seem like a way to get much done.
It’s probably even harder to get anything when you’re a president, and have to go through a billion committees. Not too many have accomplished what Bill Clinton did.

Nice analysis. I read his book again over the weekend (once upon a time, I thought I could support him). Even with his self-inflation, it was clear that little was accomplished in what I would call his rabble rousing. Very few changes occurred, and he even spoke of the state house in terms of being a lackluster or boring location where most of the laws passed are less than scintillating. He is like a rolling stone, gathering no moss. That is why there is nothing to him. His whole life, he has just been passing through.

Anti-Gay, not much difference.

Anti-health-care? Are you really fool enough to believe that Obama will give us UHC? One of his mouthpieces, Kerry all ready said that’s off the table.

Hillary Clinton and John McCain have one thing in common — mutual respect. When Obama’s 20-year friend and one of his “spiritual advisers” Father Phleger launched his sexist and racist rant against Clinton, only one person of either party spoke out in protest: John McCain.

“Uncalled for, unnecessary, and disgraceful,” said McCain. What did Obama say? Nada.

That’s when McCain earned my vote.

Comment by TeakWoodKite | 2008-07-07 11:03:47

That’s when McCain earned my vote

He had my vote “against” BO, but after that he had my vote FOR him…his sincerity in responding was genuine.

If Senator Clinton not the Nominee.

But but, I’m the presumptive nominee, fall in line and give me your money in the name of unity! Haa haa. Good move by the McCain’s camp to have Carly Fiorina be in an important role of woo’ing women. I worked in the silicon valley during her reign with HP and she’s no pushover. Like Hillary, she’s strong and extremely intelligent. Carly, watch out for any coming bus!

Don’t want Hillary on Obama’s ticket.

And that’s where this might be headed.

I want Obama out of the picture. The DNC had no business putting him in the position he’s in today. It’s been a travesty on all accounts. Obama is rekindling sentiments that should have died long ago.

And because he isn’t qualified and doesn’t have experience, it makes it all the worse.

I don’t blame Hillary’s supporters for not wanting to give him money. But do they really want her on the ticket under him?

I know I don’t!!

Comment by wodiej | 2008-07-07 10:26:35

nope, it would just be to use her so he can win-nothing more. Her and Bill would be regarded as nothings in an Obama administration. Not only that, he doesn’t deserve it. They have both been treated like crap-they should tell him to stick it-he’s on his own.

Comment by lute | 2008-07-07 10:34:11

Having worked for insecure bosses for 25 years, I can assure you that he will feel pangs of jealousy and will feel threatened if she starts accomplishing more than he does (which will be easy).
She would have to lay low, and lay back, and pretend her brilliant ideas are his, and that he plays a great role in accomplishments achieved by her sweat and all-nighters.
God, there is nothing worse than working for a boss with little going for him.

It would have to be underachiever Claire Turkey Neck McCaskill. Kathleen Sebellius is too attractive and youthful at her age – plus she’s boring. But Obama’s bitter half would resent him being seen everywhere with Kansas’ Silver Fox. Voters would be uneasy with the subtle miscegenation implications. Plus a black man *and* a woman – it only would have worked with Hillary. The Dream Ticket is lost.

Obama and the Breck Boy love one another, but shades of Crockett and Tubbs. I don’t know.

Comment by sjc-tx | 2008-07-07 11:14:22

Its not about ‘important’… The WSJ, Wall Street Journal is/was primarily a “financial paper”. It is ~the~ paper to read for that info. That is where it acquired its ‘prestige’. ALOT of the “capitalists” read that first… hence why the article being there in the first place…

Comment by believe | 2008-07-07 11:42:48

It’s also a VERY right wing paper.

Comment by derridog | 2008-07-07 12:30:33

Well, I take it because where I used to live that was the only morning paper I could get. I’ve found that the editorial page is written by troglodytes, as you say, but the news pages are often more balanced and informative than the Times. The WSJ often has analytical articles about what’s going on behind the scenes that you can’t find anywhere else. I”ve come to value it for that.

Comment by Hope Floats | 2008-07-07 13:31:49

The Daily News is more balanced than the NYT. I lifted an eyebrow when they took on William Kristol, but I’d read him over Maureen Dowd any day. Of course, skipping that rag (and WaPo) is always an option. I like the WSJ just fine.

Clinton eliminated the deficit and began work on the enormous Reagan/Bush debt. Bush Jr. restarted the debt growth process. The Republicans are the founding fathers of the debt. To solve serious problems we must abandon political myths. Both liberals and conservatives can be fiscally responsible and irresponsible. Citizens are responsible for weeding out the good from the bad. For example, better Clinton than McCain. Better McCain than Obama. Better Obama than Obama (depends on the model offered in the primary advertising).

pagan — I feel good today. Obama has to go pretty far to find a receptive audience these days. Hillary supporters are going for McCain and the Obamabots who were true believers cannot be far behind. Also, I believe Americans have said enough is enough. We don’t need some preening fop as our President — we want someone who is going to work hard on behalf of the people.

Also, Obama is going to start a war with the media. That one will be enjoyable to watch. Thank you for the great writing you do. It is my sense today that the pendulum is going to swing back and the little guys are going to win one.

On another forum, George Soros’ role in this election was discussed. Here’s another wrinkle to this presidential election that should not be dismissed totally.

One thing we can all agree upon, Hillary was pushed out by some very powerful forces and we should make every effort to find out as much as we can and start connecting the dots.

The link to this article points out some of the reasons for the all out attack on her from day one and by whom and for what reason.

Definitely something to think about:

That article is from Feb. 5, 2008 and predicts obama will be finished after ST. That obviously didn’t happen so what is the point of posting that article? i mean, I’m all for HRC but I don’t get the connection. if Bo was supposed to take down HRC and then implode, why is he still around?

Comment by K. Wynne | 2008-07-07 12:00:27

Obviously, I didn’t site this article to be taken as an “absolute” road map of what is going happen and when (no one can predict that). The interesting point made in the article was about NYC mayor “Michael Bloomberg”. No one seems to be paying attention to him.

However, there have been several trial balloons being put out about his being a possible VP choice for “either” McCain or Obama. Those in power are not obvious about their secret ambitions, they are very secretive. Which is why Obama can easily be viewed as a puppet being used for a purpose, because he came out of nowhere with very powerful supporters.

Another fact to consider is that Bloomberg not so long ago decided to leave the republican party and become an independent. By making this change, it does leave him open to be a potential VP pick by either candidate. If he is chosen, that would be significant, don’t you think?

Again, these articles aren’t meant to be taken “literally”, they are simply guidelines in keeping track of all the players in this political game and what affiliations they have with one another, etc.

Comment by s. hall | 2008-07-07 13:06:37

K Wynne — Wasn’t it Bloomberg who was very instrumental in starting UNITY08 which was meant to be a coalition of both parties with a strong president at the helm? He held a convention last year and top Democrats and Republicans came. The Democratic names are those who support Obama now. Obama seems to meet with Bloomberg once a month — wonder what that’s all about. I find Bloomberg’s connection to all this very interesting.

Comment by K. Wynne | 2008-07-07 13:14:35

Yes, he met with them in “private” at the Unversity of Oklahoma in January of this year.

I believe he is positioning himself to be the “knight in shining armor” at some point. One cannot predict how this game will play out, but I do believe the involvement of two billionaires — Soros and Bloomberg — to be a siginficant piece of the puzzle.

Comment by Hope Floats | 2008-07-07 13:38:57

I think there is too much antipathy about Mike Bloomberg on either ticket. He is not seen as a strong Dem; more Republican than Lieberman, in fact. Rumor is he’s a closeted gay. His being a mayor of NYC doesn’t bring national experience. I just don’t see how he’d help Obama’s cause, but the two are thick as thieves.

I don’t get the polls.

Real Clear Politics’ Poll of Polls still has Obama leading by six points through yesterday’s polling.

This includes the weekend Gallup Daily Tracking Poll and the more conservative pollsters like Rasmussen.

Who the dickens is propping up this guy’s numbers?

His numbers are slipping, but only by a point a week so far. If that keeps up, he can still be holding himself statistically even with McCain at the time of the Democratic convention.

Crap!

Let’s hope the flip-flopping backlash is slow to show itself in the polls and this week will tell the tale.

The Sunday news programs certainly didn’t do anything yesterday to push the issue. Talk about soft-pedaling the biggest string of flip-flops ever recorded in record time!

That actually depends on how many of his newly engaged supporters see thru him by November. He isn’t wearing very well, and while I doubt they will go out and vote for someone else, I also suspect they might not come out to vote at all. Seeing it up close and personal – my relatives who are so sorely disappointed with his recent spate of inconsistencies didn’t vote before him and aren’t planning to go vote for him now either, even though they did register and vote in the primaries.

See McCain flip flops here:

I am very serious about what I just wrote. Every American should read that book. This goes way beyond Obama or HRC or McCain or even the Supreme Court. The level of criminality is truly chilling. It goes to the future of human freedom across the entire planet.

Comment by Steven Mather | 2008-07-07 12:35:17

Klein makes interesting reading, however, coming here and calling people “useful idiots” is guaranteed to fail to get your point across.

I suggest you spend some time at the KOS, where a number of people are currently bemoaning that they are used idiots. They are more likely to open to your admonishing suggestion, especially because they are beginning to see Obama is a business as usual politician.

Comment by believe | 2008-07-07 12:39:55

What you say about Kos is so last week. And in any case, even Kos who didn’t like the FISA stand, wrote in his critical piece regarding Obama, “I hope he wins big.”

I read her book, and yes, there are evil people in both parties. The question today remains – who do I trust more? Someone like John McCain, who has time after time put his country above his party, or someone like Barack Obama, who has time after time put those around him under a bus to meet his objectives? Even Nader is a better pick if you can’t vote for McCain.

If you read the book with thought, you’ll see that Mr McCain is not one of the people she is writing about.

What are you Klein’s agent or something? She’s the worst thing to come from Canada since Bryan Adams, but the commie twat will still pick up some new fans. I liked her Johnny-Come-Lately piece on the free market flip flop of Obama’s. She finally got that he’s a Chicago School of Economics Friedmanite.

I like Carly Fiorina. I wish McCain would make HER his VP. That would really get the Obamatrons’ panties in a twist. lol

Comment by believe | 2008-07-07 11:28:17

Carly Fiorina? She laid off lots of workers and had a major scandal at her company. Obama could gain a lot with her as McCain’s vp. She’s help him consolidate his lead among working class voters.

Comment by beebop | 2008-07-07 13:59:48

Does the company name “MAYTAG” mean anything to you? He didn’t lay them off. He just let their jobs disappear and jived them into believing he had said something on their behalf. He’s the ever present “present.” No gift that I can see.

Comment by Hope Floats | 2008-07-07 14:02:28

Olympia Snowe might enter the veepstakes. I bet the McCain campaign is doing some polling to see whether it’s worth offending conservatives while attracting Clinton voters. Obama has Bush’s pastor breaking up the evangelical flock, anyway.

I knew Carly Fiorina would be problematic, though she’s been very helpful as a spokeswoman for McCain.

Tim Pawlenty might still be on the shortlist, though there were mixed reviews about his recent MTP spot. He would signal McCain was going after working class and Independent voters. Pawlenty has conservative creds, too.

And the Republican party is facing big problems with writing its platform:

Conservative activists are preparing to do battle with allies of Sen. John McCain in advance of September’s Republican National Convention, hoping to prevent his views on global warming, immigration, stem cell research and campaign finance from becoming enshrined in the party’s official declaration of principles.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/07/06/AR2008070602322_pf.html

Oh, and in case you haven’t noticed, Obama has LOTS of money and doesn’t big donors particularly. Meanwhile, McCain is behind in all the polls and in the electoral college maps and has a lot of unhappiness among conservatives.

Comment by Hope Floats | 2008-07-07 14:04:16

SURPRISE SURPRISE MR. NO PUBLIC CAMPAIGN FINANCING HEY DID I MENTION I’M BLACK? HAS LOTS OF MONEY. WHOOPEE.

Comment by andySF | 2008-07-07 16:50:24

What?55% of his donors are $200 plus and many of his millions are form big money. Read the article below if you care about the truth.

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/chi-oped0707byrnejul07,0,2090442.story

Out of the 266 mil:

So, whom do lobbyists represent? Special interests—various industries and associations wanting something from government. Here, from the Center’s OpenSecrets.org, are some of the industries that have given Obama money: lawyers, $17.8 million; securities and investments, $7.9 million; education, $7 million; real estate, business services, miscellaneous businesses, health professionals and TV/movies/music, more than $4 million each. Computers/Internet, finance, civil servants and public officials, printing and publishing, commercial banks, hospitals and nursing homes, construction services, all ranging from almost $1 million to more than $3 million
Biggest donors? Goldman, Sachs & Co., UBS, JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup, National Amusements, Lehman Brothers, Google, Sidley Austin, Skadden Arps, Time Warner, Morgan Stanley, Exelon, Latham & Watkins, Microsoft and GE are among the biggest corporate contributors.

How can this be? Didn’t Obama say he doesn’t accept money from lobbyists and PACs? Well, that means he still can accept money from “spouses of lobbyists, non-lobbying partners who work for lobbying firms or for law firms that do lobbying, ex-lobbyists and state lobbyists,” said the Center. “Because of contribution limits, organizations that bundle together many individual contributions are often among the top donors to presidential candidates. These contributions can come from the organization’s members or employees [and their families].”

Obama said he now eschews public financing because the devil (McCain and the GOP) made him do it; Obama supposedly is at a disadvantage because they are “fueled by contributions from Washington lobbyists and special-interest PACs.”

To which FactCheck.org replied: “We find that to be a large exaggeration and a lame excuse. In fact, donations from PACs and lobbyists make up less than 1.7 percent of McCain’s total receipts, and they account for only about 1.1 percent of the [Republican National Committee's] receipts.”

Here’s a final word from FactCheck: “[T]he Democratic National Committee has historically been far more reliant on PAC and lobbyist money than the RNC. In 2004, PACs provided about 10 percent of the DNC’s total fundraising and only about 1 percent of the RNC’s total.

Now, I am sure that you’re still convinced that all his money came from small donors just like he said.

Truth hurts, and it’s better to just stuck your head in the sand.

What lies? Everything in that article is consistent with what Obama wrote about the job in his book and what he says about it.

Comment by Sugar | 2008-07-07 11:41:13

You and Obama are liars:

“I changed as a result of that bus trip, in a fundamental way,” Mr. Obama wrote. It was the kind of action that “hints at what might be possible and therefore spurs you on.”

What Mr. Obama does not mention in his book is that residents of the nearby Ida B. Wells housing project, and some at Altgeld itself, had already been challenging the housing authority on asbestos. A local newspaper had also taken up the issue.”

Comment by Sugar | 2008-07-07 11:43:18

And, he didn’t even have the stamina for that little job and now he wants to get his hands on the codes to this country’s nuclear arsenal? I don’t think so:

“Barack basically talked about how tough it was to generate real results through organizing and that it was embarrassing to him to have the residents out of control,” he recounted.

“He wondered if he had done a good enough job preparing them for the meeting,” Mr. Owens said. “He sounded angry at himself. He was questioning the whole methodology.”

Mr. Obama had risen to executive director of the Developing Communities group, but the demanding hours, small victories and low pay took a toll on him, and he decided to leave.

Comment by believe | 2008-07-07 11:45:03

You need to seriously grow up.

Comment by believe | 2008-07-07 12:02:57

What you’re doing is called stereotyping. You’ve constructed a stereotype of Obama supporters and are applying it. The trouble is, it just isn’t accurate.

Comment by Hope Floats | 2008-07-07 14:10:41

My God, if believe supports Obama’s policy proposals, then we’re seriously in trouble. He has been in the US Senate one year and never met with these countries to talk about his policies, though he chairs that subcommittee.

Comment by believe | 2008-07-07 12:45:22

Big deal. He clearly knows how to write extremely well. And editing and working with varied writers is very difficult work in itself.

In fact, Obama was good at that, he was offered a job at University of Chicago law school, one of the very top law schools in the country.

Once a piece is set, the president also sends a letter or fax and makes a follow-up phone call to each author. Federal Judge Michael W. McConnell, who was nominated by President Bush and has frequently been mentioned as one of Bush’s potential Supreme Court nominees, recalls receiving one such letter and call in early 1990 for his article “The Origins and Historical Understanding of Free Exercise of Religion.”

McConnell told Politico, “A frequent problem with student editors is that they try to turn an article into something they want it to be. It was striking that Obama didn’t do that. He tried to make it better from my point of view.” McConnell was impressed enough to urge the University of Chicago Law School to seek Obama out as an academic prospect.

Your ignorance of the real issues at stake at this election is matched only by your boundless self-regard, which in turn is matched only by the fierceness of your truly psychologically disturbing hatred and loathing for the fantasy figure you have erected in the place of the real human being named Barack Obama. You build up this towering edifice of fantasy in order to have someplace to deposit your personal angst and then spew out your stock attack lines like “praying at the altar,” as if that had anything to do with anything.

Once you realize the stakes of this election, the idea that we can go 4 years with a McCain presidency so that Clinton can run again in 4 years (and who knows if she’d have a chance then after whatever happens happens), is pretty appalling.

It shows that the PUMA folks have zero interest in politics as a way of affecting public policy.

And the vested interest they have in claiming that people worship Obama is quite odd.

Comment by Steven Mather | 2008-07-07 12:50:15

Because you lack the experience of the attacks we received from his believers over a long stretch of time, you lack the revelation we have about them. This leads to your silly provincial assertion that we are not speaking to an actual phenomenon. You fish are not aware of the water in which you live and breathe.

You two might not follow their practise, but you also do not incur their wrath because you are of their body politic, which is why you do not understand our justified, overt hostility towards them or our impatience with his agents, in general.

It’s particularly amusing that you people think you’ve been subject to some vicious political attacks. You have no clue — none whatsoever — what truly vicious attacks sound like. No HRC supporter and no PUMA has ever been subjected to anything like what real political visionaries were subjected to in the past, like civil rights workers in the 50s, peace activists in the 60s, feminist activists in the 70s, abortion rights providers in the 80s, even the Clintons in the 90s or the utterly vicious and heavily funded attacks on John Kerry in 2004. Seriously. You have no clue. Your pampered self-pity is pathetic and laughable.

Comment by Steven Mather | 2008-07-07 13:47:46

sfhillary,

Your use of hyperbole is a testament to your intellectual and moral quality.

A quick perusal of PUMA sites provides a picture of a mixed bag of principled people who care about their country and party who are actively engaged in upholding the values of their founding fathers. Discussions are directed towards candidates and their surrogates because they embody their principles, policies and their modes of practise. To some extent, peoples reactions to McCain, Clinton, and Obama is a reaction to their principles, policy and practise. To the extent we dislike those 3 “p”s, we might also dislike the candidate.

If you have the intellectual integrity you appear to imagine in yourself, then you need only reflect on the attacks on the Clintons (racist, sexist, etc.) to see why people who identified with the Clintons are less than enthusiastic about embracing those who launched the attacks. (See the Guardian’s exposee on the Obama campaigns/followers use of old Republican talking points against the Clintons).

For example, if someone calls me a racist, then I have no desire to have further interaction with that person. If they persist, then they have declared a state of conflict between us. The Obama campaign declared this state of conflict and hostilities have not ceased, in part because people like you come here and think that the victims’ anger is unjustified and that the Sweeties should get over it.

Well, these Sweeties are not going to get over a third stolen vote to support a politician who is race baiting “And did I mention he’s black.”;

sexist “Periodically, when she’s feeling down…she lashes out…” and mental distress is not a women’s abortion health issue;

and an unprincipled, policy nuancer (FISA, NAFTA renegotiation, troop withdrawal, single payer system, etc.),

who says he’s not going to stoop to negative politics immediately before he says he’s the only candidate that will tell the people the truth.

If you do not think that Obama’s negative campaign against Hillary and his apparent lack of principle, as manifest in his policy reversals on foundational progressive issues, is reason to justify an active engagement against his candidacy, then we have no grounds upon which to have a discussion. Please go elsewhere with your puerile mockery and self-congratulatory intellectual flourish.

P.S. I’ve studied with Dr. Stephen Kent, a world renowned expert on religious cults. My perceptions of cult-like behavior among some Obama supporters are theoretically-grounded. If you are unable to see the parallels, then it appears that you lack the intellectual tools to do so.

Comment by sfhillary | 2008-07-07 14:34:43

Yeah, yeah. The Obama campaign’s “sexist” and (especially rich) “racist” attacks against HRC were the most horrible such attacks in recent political history, maybe in all political history. They were so bad, this “negative politics” based on a couple offhand references, that it justifies voting for a Republican. And Michigan, a state about whose primary HRC herself said “everybody knows Michigan doesn’t count,” now must count, completely, and with zero votes for Obama, no matter what the Democratic National Committee said, in advance, or it is a “stolen vote,” and you clowns are the equivalents of the Freedom Marchers in the 1950s.

But it’s everyone else who is in the cult — not you few thousand PUMA souls who hold deranged, fact-free opinions that everyone else in the political world laughs at. I can just imagine the operatives at McCain headquarters laughing and making the fruit-loops twirl around their skulls when they talk about you useful idiots.

Go have fun, spend the rest of the summer and fall spinning your insane conspiracy theories about evil Obama, then cast your ridiculous votes for the Republican. I’m through preaching to the silent readers here who are still persuadable. I’ll be back on November 5th to laugh in your faces and gleefully read your pathetic wailing about how the world has come to an end.

That’s why I, like Obama, decided to make change through politics, where you can make more fundamental change than you can through local action.

so you’re for Obama who quit a community organizer job because the hours were too long and the pay was too small? Wow, you don’t have high expectations from a leader do you? But then again you obviously can’t discern what leadership abilities are.

Comment by believe | 2008-07-07 12:15:12

He got great experience there and then moved on to make a bigger difference for more people.

As for money, he could have made far more money in his life if he made different choices, whether you look at it after graduating Columbia or Harvard Law. So it’s not as if the man has been chasing wealth.

Comment by Hope Floats | 2008-07-07 16:10:40

Yeah, he figured out to BS desperate people a la Saul Alinsky. Obama said this was “invaluable training.” I hope he never gets the opportunity to implement his faith-based initiative programs. Goodbye, America!

“When you focus on local concerns, there’s a limit to what you can change.”

What a stupid fugging thing to say. He has no problem traipsing his ass all across the country now to these towns that have “local concerns” promising that he’s going to do this thing and that thing but he couldn’t even handle this “from the bottom up” change he’s been touting!!! Face the facts! He’s the one who’s been talking about how change comes from the bottom up and yet when he was at the bottom, he changed NOTHING!!! Read the article and weep troll! He changed nothing! He merely benefited his own still thin resume.

Comment by believe | 2008-07-07 12:12:35

He did get some things done at the local level and local work matters — but he realized, as did I and many other folks who do community work for awhile and then turn to public policy and politics, that to make big changes you have to MAKE POLICY.

who Hillary?? NO, she’s not extremely anti choice you moron. She is for safe, legal abortions but wants it to be less of a choice women make by using safe birth control.

No, Sarah Palin is extremely anti-choice. She just gave birth to her fifth child. They are all young, and one has Downes Syndrome. Conservative voters will have a hard time seeing America’s Hottest Governor running the country, if something happens to McCain. Neocons love her, because she wants to drill in ANWR, thinks global warming is a hoax and wants to kill polar bears.

Comment by Dawnelle | 2008-07-07 11:56:08

that’s her right – and extreme is a word I use for the Obamabots like you!! Extremists! WE don’t need anymore of those. McCain is a moderate.

the law won’t be changing any time soon so quit using that as a threat!

Comment by believe | 2008-07-07 11:59:06

It’s not a law that keeps abortion safe and legal, it’s a ruling by the Supreme Court.

And what policy views do you think I hold that are extreme?

Comment by TeakWoodKite | 2008-07-07 12:18:58

Roe v Wade was about interstate commerce NOT abortion per say…

So get your facts or listen to oral arguements or read the the opinion.

Comment by believe | 2008-07-07 12:36:26

What?

I just searched the entire text of the decision and neither “commerce” nor “interstate” even appear in it.
http://caselaw.lp.findlaw.com/scripts/getcase.pl?court=US&vol=410&invol=113

The main constitutional issue actually was whether there is a federal right to privacy that encompasses abortion.

Comment by believe | 2008-07-07 12:00:41

And of course it’s Palin’s right to be completely anti-choice. But that’s not the Democratic party’s position, nor the position of the vast majority of Americans.

BTW, Fiorina is pro-choice. So her selection would really anger conservatives, with whom McCain already has problems.

Comment by Hope Floats | 2008-07-07 16:17:09

McCain should run with Olympia Snowe and tell the conservatives to suck it up. He is still pro-life and would be the top on the ticket. Olympia Snowe would help him win. That’s worth consideration.

Fox just reported that Ted Kennedy endorsed Obama because Caroline Kennedy wanted to get into “the family business” and she was part of the endorsement deal. Thus she is on Obama’s VP search team.

Comment by believe | 2008-07-07 11:57:58

I’m sure Fox News must have the greatest insight into what Ted Kennedy thinks because…why?

Oh, well, no, they wouldn’t, would they?

Comment by Bella | 2008-07-07 12:18:17

The NY Post uncovered that piece of info.

You honestly think a Kennedy is going to offer up an endorsement or any other type of political favor for nothin? LMAO!

Comment by believe | 2008-07-07 12:31:28

Oh, the NY Post said, that Murdoch rag. Again, why would we believe them? They don’t have super special sources in the Kennedy camp. And what would Caroline want from Obama that she, with her name, wealth, and connections, couldn’t get on her own? If she lived in MA and wanted Teddy’s seat, she would get that on her own.

K Wynne –

The George Soros phenomenon has always be mysterious. If even half of what LaRouche says is true, our country is in for a world of political and socio-economic hurt.

We simply have to get Soros / Move-on / Dean / Pelosi / Brazile and Obama out of the Democratic hierarchy.

Something BIG is going on and we can’t see it yet. Too much is happening that is unexplained. Every day brings a new WTF to my lips.

I’m not a LaLouche fan, but maybe he’s on to something.

Everybody should give LaRouche’s pamphlet on Soros a read. If you can’t handle the total package, scroll down to page 17 and read the article titled:

GEORGE SOROS BUYS THE NOMINATION: OBAMA BORROWS IT By Ed Hamler.

Comment by DancingOpossum | 2008-07-07 12:13:49

Wellllll well well, looks like the trolls can’t use OMG ROE AND CHOICE to bludgeon us womenfolk any longer now that Obama has come out to a Christian magazine about his anti-choice views. One legal analyst said Obama’s remarks were so reactionary that the only other people who held those views were ALITO and SCALIA. So now we also have a better idea of what kind of justices Obama would see as SCOTUS-appropriate: The most anti-choice ones available! Poor old Nancy Keenan of NARAL had to twist herself into so many knots to justify what Obama said I doubt she’ll ever be able to walk straight again.

Obama is now officially to the right of even John McCain on abortion. Nice going, guys!

Hmmm, what will they try to scare us with next? Or will they just say SHUT UP! like Bill O’Reilly used to do when he was outfoxed in an argument?

Roe: Next one under Obama’s bus.

Comment by believe | 2008-07-07 12:16:27

What Obama said is what Russ Feingold also says. It’s far from a conservative position.

Comment by LindaA1 | 2008-07-07 12:34:47

We have to watch what NARAL says about Obama’s new abortion position.

Most folks don’t know that Roe vs Wade was argued before the Supreme Court along with a companion case – Doe vs Bolton.

Roe established the “right to abortion.” Doe established the “medical exlusions.”

NARAL was quoted in the LA Times saying Obama has always been “consistent on…the tenets of Roe.”

AHEM!

Yes, technically, since Roe does not address the medical exclusions, Doe does.

NARAL knows the case law quite well. Don’t be surprised if you see this disingenuous singular reference to the “tenets of Roe” more than once.

I feel another WORM (What Obama Really Meant) coming.

Comment by believe | 2008-07-07 12:41:02

believe -

I gotta give you credit for having the courage to get out here by yourself and campaign for your man!

DO I PREFER McCAIN’S POSITION?

Well, no. But I don’t give a damn about any of McCain’s positions. He’s not a problem for me.

If Hillary does not end up with the nomination, then he’ll definitely get my vote. We’ll have a strong Democratic Majority. He’ll be a lame-duck, hamstrung, one-term President.

McCain will not be able to get ANY conservative judge confirmed for any court including the Supreme Court – so the Roe vs Wade fear tactic is useless.

McCain will not be able to fund the Iraq war or any other military operation without approval of the Democratically controlled Congress. Congress can end the wars if they choose to do so.

Hillary can work on her health plan for the next four years and be ready to implement it on day one of her 2012 Presidency – if would take that long anyway to get it up and running – no time lost.

Any Executive action McCain would take could be undone in the first minutes of a new Presidency.

YES, I PREFER McCAIN in the White House if my only other choice is Barack Obama.

BTW –

How do you explain Obama’s flip flops? On FISA? On the abortion “mental distress” issue? On campaign reform? On his glorious mantra about being out of Iraq in 16 months (or less)?

I’m really curious as to how you can defend him still when he is flying in the face of his “campaign winning” positions. When he is turning into the worst of the worst of politicians – pandering, lying about what he stands for.

Really. HOW?

Today’s news is a stunner. Send $5 to Obama and you’ll get a chance of a front row seat from ten names pulled from a “raffle” for you and your guest, fly to Denver, etc.! And the last night of the Democratic convention moved to the 75,000 seat sports arena in Denver. Talk about no class (the raffle), and presumption (the 75,000 seat arena). Well I hope they fill that arena, and I hope Hillary is the candidate chosen!!!

No one is into Obama as much they are to be chasing comments all over this thread to plead their case. I do know that there is a civil war brewing over at Barack’s own website with bloc groups forming and positions hardening with donations being held as ransom—this is a pretty wild election year!!!
