Daily Kos, Along with Obama’s Base, Is Fracturing

The other night, I wrote in “The Choice (But I’ve Been Touched) – A Long Overdue Update“:

[M]any Kossacks attacked the blog founder Markos (”Kos”) Moulitsas when he announced he was withholding his $2,300 donation to Obama’s presidential campaign because of his dismay with Obama’s backpedaling on FISA, public financing, and more. Kos titled his essay, Rewarding good behavior.”

They continue to attack. And attack. And attack. Here’s one of the latest, from a diary by Kath25, “People Power Will Donate $2,300 Instead, Markos (Update VI)” — the 903rd comment:

Yeah, Kos is an ass, a liar, and a coward.

“Obama is going to raise a ton of dough and win this thing whether I send him money or not.” [Quoting Kos]

Bullshit. This is just an excuse and a lie. Some netroots leader and organizer! “Let somebody else do it. It’ll get done, somehow.”

Kos will cause Obama to lose, and will revel in it, just as Naderites reveled in Gore’s loss. There are only two possible outcomes to this election, and Kos and the lemmings in his footsteps either don’t care who wins or want to see Obama lose so as to exalt their own bloated egos.

by LongTom on Tue Jul 08, 2008 at 06:17:39 PM PDT

Here’s the link to the diary sans comments — advised if you’re on a dial-up connection or have an older computer.

If you’d like to scan the 900+ comments, go here.

I find myself siding with Kos here. He took his time endorsing Obama, and now is using the leverage he has to try to hold Obama to his commitments.

The sad reality, of course, is that Obama has no fealty to commitments over issues. Issues are merely fodder to be used to grab what he seeks above all else: Victory.

Now, every politician has to be focused on winning. But most politicians have some issues about which they genuinely care and are knowledgeable about. Obama doesn’t seem to hold any issues dear.

What should worry Denver delegates most is that, with Obama’s base bickering and more of them disappointed every day in Obama’s backpedaling, his much-vaunted ability to raise cash is being affected.

For every one of the Kossacks angry with Kos, there is another who is just as disappointed in Obama as Kos, and who is likely to donate not at all, or far less than before.

That’s a huge problem for the Democratic party, especially since Nancy Pelosi and Howard Dean have counted on Obama’s “cash cow” — and that was, I maintain, the main reason that Pelosi and Dean pulled so many strings and bent so many rules to crown Obama the nominee.

They may soon regret that greed clouded their judgment.

That’s their personal little inside joke.

In yesterday’s thread, a troll was writing banal dialog between his sock puppets. He does this in other blogs.

Comment by weltec2 | 2008-07-09 04:14:23

The thing is that we tried to tell Kos that this was going to happen from the beginning… that Obama was going to disappoint everyone… that he was not going to stand behind his promises… that he was all just vague jingles and slogans… but he and his fellow Obamadroids refused to listen to reason… in fact, they were quite rude about it… so rude that we could not have a civil discussion with them. Now they are finally beginning to see… and its too late. It’s just too late… for all of us. Thanks Kos. Thank you so very much… I can’t tell you how hhhappy I am that you are beginning to realize what you and your people have helped bring about.

Comment by lute | 2008-07-09 12:28:57

it’s not too late, and I am not going to fault Kos or anyone else.

This has been a horrible nightmare of a primary.

I think that it is to Kos’ credit that he is willing
to stick his neck out and take a beating.

PUMAS would just be happy if we could all
get together.

Nobody likes having the party fractured.

I would like to see everyone who has been
disenchanged with Obama to all get together,
and try to do something.

I’m starting to get tired of saying “I told you so” too — but I’ll keep saying it and saying it and saying (just as I did after fully half the electorate voted for George W. Nutcase), in the slim hope that enough Obama-Aid drinkers will learn to avoid being scammed the next time around. I don’t have a lot of hope, as cognitive dissonance is very powerful indeed.

And you’re right, weltec2, it is too late. This great awakening is a wonderful thing, but almost meaningless now. Unless the majority of convention delegates have a mass epiphany and vote on principle instead of slick marketing, the nation is sunk, no matter who moves into the White House.

Comment by AnninCa | 2008-07-09 07:05:16

The polls today suggest that the politicos are misreading the people’s will. We’re not just disgusted with Republicans. We’re also equally disgusted with the Democrats.

This is a “vote the rascals out” year for all of them.

There is no mandate for the Democratic party. The way McCain is polling proves that is the case. The man is not good at speeches. His policies don’t please even his own party. He’s not a strong candidate. Yet he’s 2 points behind?

Good lord, if people can’t see what that says, nothing will penetrate.

Obama has failed. He has not energized us. I don’t care if he fills that whole stadium. It will be filled with rock-star chasers.

And that means nothing as far as the political will of the people goes.

Whomever reaches the white house will not have the will of the people behind them.

Nothing has changed.

Obama may have won the primary, but he did so in a way that has taken advantage of the system of the party to give people like him a shot. He gets credit for that. But the problem is that system also puts a minority voice in charge, which means that the real voice of the majority of Democrats is not heard.

That’s the party system. We may bitch. But that’s the party system.

He won’t convince many that he’s legitimate. He’ll be the photo-op candidate. That’s all.

He’s avoiding the real problems we face. We need real leadership, not GQ man.

And people will be very, very dissatisfied.

Bill Clinton was a new kid on the block, but his passion was in policy and change. Obama? No. His passion is Obama.

Bill need not worry that he’ll still be the one president for the people and beloved.

Obama will be a jerk.

Comment by Hope Floats | 2008-07-09 08:18:01

Heh. GQ has been fairly relevant lately. I recall their 2007 Best Of list had Ron Paul as Dark Horse of the Year. David Chang was Best Chef. Mad Men was an Instant Classic. Bill Clinton – Public Citizen. Judd Apatow, Michael Cera, Jonah Hill, Seth Rogen, and Paul Rudd – Comedy Mafia. Javier Bardem – Villain. Josh Brolin — Tough Guy. Daria was Supermodel of the Year. Pretty Spot-On. A-Rod got a shout out. He’s dating Madonna while she gets a divorce.

http://www.sheknowsbest.com/gqs-2007-men-of-the-year-list/

I’m pretty good at spotting the next big thing, and I’m not seeing it with Obama. He’s a fad.

Excellent commentary as always, Ann.

Comment by Sapphocrat | 2008-07-09 15:00:53

mummy smurf: I would sooner believe the entire Obama campaign is an RNC plot to destroy the Democratic Party.

I suppose it is extremely difficult for you to accept the truth at face value: We are (or were) Democrats who were right about Obama from the start, period. I suppose that in order to protect your fragile, weakening little bubble of cognitive dissonance, you must attribute our clarity of vision to RNC skullduggery. Or brain implants from alien invaders. Or Communists. Whatever tinfoil-hat craziness makes you feel better.

Of course, the more time, money, and blind emotion an Obama supporter has invested in this farce of a campaign, the greater the resistance to the truth.

Don’t worry, mummy smurf: When you’re ready to come to your senses, we’ll welcome you to the reality-based world. Just don’t expect much sympathy.

P.S. Have a look at my blog — no, better yet, my entire site (especially my Conservative Babylon section) — and show me one shred of evidence that I’ve harbored anything but extreme contempt for everything Republican. Show me. I dare you. If I’m part of an RNC plot, I’ve put up a damned good front of being a far-left lesbian Democrat for the past 47 years, don’t you think?

They (along with the rest of the trifling media) knew where Obama’s campaign dollars were coming from all along. They were just too busy bashing Hillary and kissing Obama’s ass to report it.

Now they’re trying to pretend like they’re responsible & unbiased media. Because they’re losing (and have lost) many of their most loyal consumers after their extremely unprofessional Hillary “pile-up.” And they’re trying to do and say anything to get them back.

. . . fundraising results supposedly due by mid-month. It would be funny if Hillary outraised him in June ‘08!

If the trend continues ~ down, that is ~ it will be his lowest fundraising month. Don’t have a link, but every month since February or March 2008, he has brought in less than the month before.

May’s number was $21.9M raised, but $26.2M spent! Attaboy! (ooops ~ racist statement)

I’d sure like to see a chart of In & Out since the first of the year. I’d put it together myself, but haven’t been able to find a source.

Hopefully, MSM will start to question why the number has fallen below $20M, but you can count on Axmeister & Co. to claim it’s because Sen. Obama (Numbnutz/IL) already had it wrapped up, so no big deal.

I went to Kos to read what the Obamatrons are saying.

What’s interesting is they are panicking because they think Kos is trying to throw the election by withholding his $2,300 donation (like he is the Son of Messiah, or something).

And, they fear McCain will be elected if Obama loses.

I guess it either hasn’t occurred to them that Hillary still could be nominated at the convention and win the election, or they hate Hillary so much that is not an option in their minds.

“That’s a huge problem for the Democratic party, especially since Nancy Pelosi and Howard Dean have counted on Obama’s “cash cow” — and that was, I maintain, the main reason that Pelosi and Dean pulled so many strings and bent so many rules to crown Obama the nominee.”

“They may soon regret that greed clouded their judgment.”

I’m not a betting woman, but I sure as hell wouldn’t place a bet on “Jed, Granny and Jethro” coming to their senses anytime soon.

Nope. I’d bet money that they’ll only come to recognize the disaster of their folly on election eve.

By voting Obama into office you will create a situation in which the center right will become the new left, and today’s left will become the far left, and today’s progressive agenda will be permanently moved off the table. He may be better than McCain, but voting McCain into office will not permanently eliminate progressivism from the political spectrum. On the contrary, it will re-invigorate it. Long term view or short term view? The short term view is myopic indeed. And it is exactly what they want to see happen. You will reward blatant lying on the part of your leader with undying loyalty. You want to reward blatant manipulation on the part of your leader with blind following. You want to prove them right – in more ways than one. They know you. They know how to manipulate you and make you grateful for the pitiful crumbs they leave for you. This year the only way for progressives to win – is to lose.

The money doesn’t have a thing to do with it because $2,300 isn’t going to make or break OBooHoo’s campaign. People are actually beginning to awaken from their hypnotic trance and the Obama supporters think that if one of their own who was so deep in the Kool-Aid can actually come up for air what does that say about others who aren’t swimming in such deep Kool-Aid waters? They are scared sh**less!

Hardball tonight Matthews once again minimalized our success in Iraq.

o/t – I read, listened to and watched the post on the Aspen Institute where Schoen did his polling thing.

And what was most disturbing to me was the fact that no testing was done on Hillary – her +/-. Nothing!

So I ask myself – self, if the people stand up at the convention, and the delegates and especially the Super delegates do what is right for our country, and at this leg of this god forsaken miserable journey – salvage the Democratic Party – Hillary will be our nominee.

Right now she has a 50/50 shot at it and I just don’t understand why these elites continue to pretend she is not a contender.

Since when did she become invisible? Who gives a rats ass about the Aspen Institutes polling data?

Honestly! Many of the good folk that visit this blogsite know BO and McCains +/-. We don’t need some pollster to come in and tell us what WE’VE known for sometime. Sure it’s validating but the problem is NO ONE SEEMS TO BE PREPARING OR PLANNING FOR A HILLARY RE ENTRANCE.

If they were, then I’d be the first one to give a rip about the “Elitspen Institutes” findings.

I received an email from Democrats.com They want to symbolically hold money for you. This is designed to make Obama go back to his original positions. You don’t have to send in any funds.

Here’s the kicker – If you do send any money, they claim they’ll only release it if Obama goes back to his original positions. Then they say they’re not trying to hurt Obama and will absolutely release the money at some point.

What happens if he goes back to his original positions only long enough to get the money then flip-flops again?

I guess they didn’t think of that.

What if he never goes back to his original positions? If they vow to release the money at some point then the whole feet to the fire thing is kinda moot isn’t it?

What the heck is going on?

Comment by YoNoForObama | 2008-07-08 22:13:02

haven’t you heard? my server is Time Warner ( ala CNN, arabs, etc – very probama. homepage always has big obama news, no matter how small – ‘today obama watched his daughter play soccer’ blah blah

So here is TW Big bozo news of the day:

Obama campaign will be hosting issues meetings (sorry, forgot their catchy commercial name) Come to a meeting in your own neighborhood to tell us what THE PLATFORM should be. We want to know what you think is important, what you want on the platform, blah, blah. Contact the obama campaign to schedule a Platform party in your neighborhood.

Trouble is:
1. We thought the purpose of leadership is that experienced knowledgeable experts (like Hillary Clinton, for instance) are supposed to know more about this than we are. Now a Presidential candidate wants us to write the platform? Imagine if Ben Franklin, Tom Jefferson, Adams & company came up with that bright idea?
2. How exactly are all these trillions of opinions of hapless voters at house parties to be coalesced into one platform? Will it be like the new raffle turned contest- it depends on what you write and how you say it? Will there be a grand prize sleepover with obama if you come up with something reaaaaaaaly catchy and vote getting?
3 The obvious biggest problem being that snakeman can’t be held to remember what he promised yesterday nor to hold to a single position for even a full twenty four hours. So, how the hell does anyone expect him to hold to a Platform agreed to be voters?

Obvious answer: The platform is meaningless, the concept has no serious intention but it sure looks like a good way of acting as if he cares, doesn’t it? And better still, look at the voter lists these parties wlll get when they gather with obama campers who pretend they care or are even listening.

But, maybe I’m too cynical. Maybe they plan to run the White House like a giant TV dance show, where we all get to phone in our votes for what the hell the President should do tomorrow?

Personally, I have no sympathy for Kos. Sure, he’s entitled to his opinion and can withhold funds — or donate them — whenever he wants.

And maybe he didn’t come out personally to endorse Obama until near the end of the primary races, but he allowed his little online community to become a toxic cesspool of hate and misogyny, and he has no one to blame but himself for that.

I love watching them eat their own…from a distance, since I can’t bear to go to Daily Kos anymore.

I also got a kick out of telling HuffPo to kiss off. Got spam from them requesting “off the bus” help (one of their features) and I replied with a blistering earful.

Most of the blogosphere revealed its true colors during this primary season, and I was saddened to find that the Dems weren’t much different from the Repugs.

Comment by John | 2008-07-08 22:52:02

Gee, I don’t want to be Mr Know-It-All but I predicted (not here, admittedly) that once Obama won the nomination, his cult would turn on each other. It is really all they know. Once they were left alone with each other, they would attack those among them who were not deemed loyal enough to the Anointed One. In the case of Markos, could not be happening to a nicer guy. Josh Marshall better keep toeing the line. Must suck when you burned all your bridges, and your new friends turn against you.

In record-breaking time, they have tossed his ass right under the bus for doing what? Daring to question the “Messiah”. Mr. Obama has faced a wave of complaints from his followers in recent weeks that he is tacking hard toward the political center and moving away from his liberal base now that he is in a general election campaign. His critics note that he recently applauded a Supreme Court decision overturning a District of Columbia ban on handguns, supported a proposed wiretap law that he once promised to oppose and, in response to another Supreme Court ruling, spoke in favor of the death penalty for child rapists.

Comment by Zeke | 2008-07-09 02:22:24

I just heard him say on TV that …the reps were saying he was moving more to the center.. and that now he was hearing it from his friends on the left..
From his friends on the left.
Excuse me, but who in hell IS to the left of Obama? Ayers, Grampa, Uncle Frank, Karl Marx?
‘His friends on the left’ infers that he is not exactly on their side. He is a little more over here. In the new middle.
He then tells you what his accusers might say about him, then he exaggerates the list to absurdity, thus injecting the conclusion that all the accusations are false.
example: “He’s young, he’s inexperienced, he has a funny name, and oh yeah, did I mention he’s black?”
That is classic distraction and substitution. Lawyers are taught this crap you know. Its how you minimize negative evidence.

Comment by The Left | 2008-07-09 13:43:53

Obama isn’t on the left. People are so freakin stupid when it comes to politics.

HILLARY WAS ALWAYS FURTHER TO THE LEFT THAN OBAMA! Please educate yourself. Obama is a right wing thug with right wing beliefs in regards to religion, education and health care.

As someone with a poli sci degree my head hurts due to how many people don’t understand these things and throw around words like left and center without even knowing what they mean.

Everyone has a history ‘believe’. As MLK Jr said:

“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.”

If more Americans voted on that basis alone, this contest would not even be close, and the person who has shown us character in the face of adversity is most certainly not Mr Obama.

And you can see the commitment to winning the presidency in the statement Kos made about FISA. Sure, it was critical, but regarding Obama, Kos wrote “I hope he wins big.”

Folks are smart enough to realize that the perfect shouldn’t be the enemy of the good. Obama is far superior to McCain in the policies they’d pursue — as demonstrated by their lifetime voting records in many areas.

If you’re a Democrat, then winning means putting a Democrat in the WH.

But a lot of folks here never were Democrats. You can see it in their praise of Jesse Helms, their remarks about Marxism, their decrying of socialized medicine.

if your an american, winning means putting the best man/woman in the job…

Very few people had anything to say about Jesse Helms on this site.

“Socialized medicine” was a criticism of UHC used by Republicans that Obama co-opted during the primaries.

Marxism is only embraced by the hard line left, and the majority of commentators here are Third Way centrists.

Jesus Titty-Fucking Christ, believe, you repeat yourself a lot for someone who wants discussion and interesting political banter. You old whore.

voting present? as in not voting yes or no?

as in a coward?

or as in saying they pressed the wrong button?

as is saying jeruselum is the capital of isreal?

as in holding a press conference shortly after a previous press conference to clarify his lies?

Yesterday’s editorial in the Minneapolis Star Tribune was less than complimentary to Obama. I would provide the link but I do not know how this is done and my two teenage sons whom I rely on for tech instruction are in bed. In any event, for a state as liberal as Minnesota, this is quite an admission of disappointment for their candidate of change.

Comment by AnninCa | 2008-07-09 08:06:13

I personally think this will be his message. Disappointment.

Over and over.

He’s destroyed the party.

Historic? We have two wars, deficits, education failures, jobs gone forever, health care we can’t afford, housing we can’t afford…and the dialogue is focused on WHAT? Who adores the chosen one! Yes, the Democratic Party is finished! Even if they push this jerk into the White House, there are millions who will not return to the party!

Comment by BJ | 2008-07-09 09:10:05

I read somethng yesterday that said congress rating is at an all time low – i think it was 9% (which is cray), and lest we not forget it is 51% dems!!

add to that the Turkish embassy being attacked and 6 dead, plus Iran shooting a missile (towards Israel? notsure)..

then also Russia! they sent out a warning to the US I think I read 3 days ago and it was a threatening warning that we shouldn’t have some kind of radar equipment in their neighboring states (to track Russian missiles if I recall, i only brushed over the article).

but these are SERIOUS issues going on around the world like we haven’t seen since.. since… the cuban missile crisis ?… and can u imagine Obambi and his circle of thugs in charge of things?

I shutter at the thought! :(

Comment by BJ | 2008-07-09 09:01:52

You know this is quite interesting and very amusing. It was people like Kos that CREATED these diehard zombies who fall in line behind their empty suit messiah. Now that kos shows a miligram of integrity and trying to hold the bambi accountable, the zombies he created are shooting verbal farts at him for not bowing to their messiah no matter what he does!

This is quite hysterical!

Comment by ford | 2008-07-09 10:00:39

Why did the DNC move to Chicago before the convention??? before the roll call?? demanded that super delegates vote BEFORE the convention???

Because Hillary was overtaking BO and the DNC had to call it early so the Obama did not have to pick up his ego…

This is the occupation of the DNC by Obama.

Comment by ford | 2008-07-09 10:05:54

WTF…why are you talking about Jesse Helmes here?? Is Obama related to him too?? LOL

Obama and his zombies are all about selling whatever you’ll buy. He is a CON. His recent flips are just the warm up. I’ll bet the folks from Trinity United will say that they hardly recognize him now.

Why? He doesn’t need them anymore, he needs the Kansas vote now, so on to the typical white grandmother…I wonder why she wasn’t on Axcess Hollywood??

Comment by joeysky | 2008-07-09 11:32:37

So Kos is not beling held hostage in his own readers. He can’t express an opinion in his OWN website!

How ironic?!?

Comment by Madam DeFarge | 2008-07-09 12:41:29

I respect Kos a lot for taking an unpopular
stand.

Stuff means something to him.

Like someone said, we all need to be getting together.
Obama has disappointed a lot of people.

Throwing stones isn’t how to get together.
That’s Obama’s way of unifying.

Tactful dialog is our way.

Dems like to think that we are immune to the kind of authoritarian personality types that become blind devotees to a political leader. The frat boys at Daily Kos have proved this theory wrong.

It’s the sickest thing I’ve ever seen, and it has to be defeated.

I’m a thirty-year Democrat and I’m going to vote for McCain, not because I like him, but because I think Barack Obama is bad for the party, and bad for America. He stands for NOTHING but himself. And his followers–the kind who come here to pick fights–do nothing more than confirm my view.

Don’t pat KOS back to hard over this one. He is just getting ahead of the “whitey” curve. August is around the corner and so is the tape. KOS does not want to be seen fleeing. With this move he will be standing with us saying “i told you so.” The guy “ain’t” stupid. But man his posters and readers are.

Arianna is getting it too at Huffblow. It is delicious to behold. Her book is sinking too. If you don’t count the millions of copies she bought herself to give away. Talk about bad karma: she makes Tim Russert the centerpiece of her attack on the media and then he has the poor taste to die on her. And his media cohorts have circled the wagons to protect his reputation. Anyway, she wrote an opinion piece called “Moving to the middle is for Losers” and the Obama worshippers have been raking her over the coals for it. Wonderful to see.
