Merkel to Obama: Willkommen Sie nach Berlin aber keine Massenversammlungen Danke

Berlin\'s Brandenburg Gate

To Obama, all the world is a stage, hence a stadium in Denver or the Bradenburg Gate seem fitting backdrops to his delusions of grandeur. Misanthrophic is the word that comes to mind. Contemptuous is another. However, the Germans do not seem to be willing to play his games.

Via Germany’s Der Spiegel:

Democratic Presidential candidate Barack Obama is expected to visit Germany and Berlin in just two weeks time. But officials with Angela Merkel’s Chancellery are reserved about the prospects of a speech at the famous Brandenburg Gate.

United States presidential candidate Barack Obama is planning to visit Berlin in two weeks. “The date appears to be set for July 24,” a German government source told SPIEGEL ONLINE. Both German Chancellor Angela Merkel of the conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier of the Social Democrats (SPD) are expected to hold talks in the German capital with Obama.

“They want to get better acquainted with him,” the source said.

However, the source, who asked not to be named, was reserved about the prospects of Obama holding a speech before the Brandenburg Gate.”

“The Brandenburg Gate is the most famous and history-rich site in Germany,” the Chancellery source said. In the past, the location has only been used on very special occasions for political speeches by world leaders. And it has been reserved for use only by elected American presidents, not candidates. The decision on whether the Democrat can speak at the location ultimately lies with the Berlin state government. Chancellery officials are concerned that the Brandenburg Gate could be turned into an “arbitrary stage” that other campaigns could also seek to use in the future.

It’s a traditional practice for US presidential candidates to visit Germany before the election. However, the source pointed out that agreements can only be made with elected presidents. The source also noted that a the German federal government would also be equally pleased to play host to a visit by Republican candidate John McCain. The door is just as open for him, the source said.

Nuremberg is probably a better fit any way.

I went to high school in Germany and Kennedy’s speech is a punch line in world history classes.

Can’t imagine what they would say about barky.

Keep up the good fight, brother!

In 1963, John Kennedy said “Ich bin stoltz darauf dass ich bin ein berliner” translated literally means “I am proud that I am a hard roll.” The correct form would be “einer Berliner” which is meaningless to Americans (like Obama) who are famous for their ignorance of foreign languages.

Comment by Helmut | 2008-07-08 21:15:31

What Waspish part of America do you live in? Where I live, it is very multilingual. In one day I can hear Spanish, Italian, Russian, Polish, French, German, Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Hindu, and even British and Irish English spoken, all by US citizens.

Comment by Tyrione | 2008-07-08 21:52:01

Those full of various languages are immigrants and not native born children being raised in multi-lingual educational schools.

As an American who took the 2 years of Deutsch I always laughed my ass off on such mistakes, especially on the world stage. It only humanized Kennedy more by being imperfect and not this god-like figure the media fantasized about with Camelot.

Comment by Helmut | 2008-07-08 22:05:45

I’m native born, my parents are native born and I although I forgot most of my Latin, I do have conversational and reading ability in Italian, which is self taught, and in German, which I studied in HS and university. My wife is native born, her parents are native born and she has conversational and reading ability in French and Greek.

Kennedy was humanized by his little mistake because he was also a humble man. He was awarded the Purple Heart in WWII and wrote in his book that he was embarrassed to receive it because he lost his ship. Great men achieve greatness through their actions, they do not claim it as their own.

In Germany a berliner is a delightful donut covered with sugar and filled with your choice of several types of fillings usually jellies, but some have cream cheese or chocolate fillings.

Comment by BlueTopaz | 2008-07-08 22:25:00

Actually, I think it would be, “Ik bin Berliner”.

Comment by JozefAL | 2008-07-09 01:43:33

HARP, you might want to get a refund from the people who “taught” you German.
Kennedy’s statement was (and still is) grammatically correct.

Comment by JozefAL | 2008-07-09 01:55:25

Furthermore, according to http://urbanlegends.about.com/cs/historical/a/jfk_berliner_2.htm

Linguist Jürgen Eichhoff did his best to lay decades of misinformation to rest in 1993 with a concise grammatical analysis of Kennedy’s statement in the academic journal Monatshefte. “‘Ich bin ein Berliner’ is not only correct,” Eichhoff wrote, “but the one and only correct way of expressing in German what the President intended to say.”

An actual Berliner would say, in proper German, “Ich bin Berliner.” But that wouldn’t have been the correct phrase for Kennedy to use. The indefinite article “ein” is required, Eichhoff explains, to express a metaphorical identification between subject and predicate. Otherwise, the speaker could be taken to say he is literally a citizen of Berlin.

To give another example, the German sentences “Er ist Politiker” and “Er ist ein Politiker” both mean “He is a politician,” but they are understood by German speakers as different statements. The first means, more exactly, “He is (literally) a politician.” The second means “He is (like) a politician.” You would say of George W. Bush, “Er ist Politiker.” But you would say of an organizationally astute coworker, “Er ist ein Politiker.”

So, it would certainly behoove some people to fucking do some damn research before they prove their own ignorance.

Incidentally, from the aforementioned website comes this additional bit of information

The translator

The man who actually translated the words into German for JFK is was Robert Lochner, the son of Associated Press correspondent Louis P. Lochner. The younger Lochner, educated in Berlin and a fluent speaker of German, was Kennedy’s official interpreter on his visit to Germany. Lochner translated the phrase on paper then rehearsed it with JFK in Berlin Mayor Willy Brandt’s office right up to the moment the speech was to be delivered.

Comment by missE | 2008-07-08 21:25:35

Helmut,

I found this at TimesOnline:

Barack Obama’s Berlin visit sparks German diplomatic row.

http://tinyurl.com/6dxylp

The Brandenburg Gate is the best known and most historically significant site in Germany,” said a Chancellery official, explaining why until now only elected presidents have been allowed to perform there.

So the Government would dearly like Mr Obama to find another platform, perhaps the town hall in the district of Schoeneberg where Kennedy expressed his solidarity with West Berlin. Almost everywhere else in the capital has unfortunate historical associations; the Olympic Stadium (where Hitler was enraged by the success of the black athlete Jesse Owens in the 1936 Games) has, for example, been ruled out.

Technically the decision lies with the Berlin Mayor, a flamboyant, openly gay Social Democrat, who quite relishes the idea of irritating the conservative Chancellor. The toing and froing between the various seats of power in Berlin is thus likely to continue until the last minute.

Wow, didja catch this part from ]
the linked article in there:

Indeed, support in Germany for Obama is broad. A poll taken by German pollster Emnid for publication in the Bild am Sonntag newspaper this weekend found that 74 percent of Germans said that if they could cast a ballot in the US election, they would vote for the presumptive Democratic Party nominee. Only 11 percent said they would vote for his Republican Party contender, John McCain.

1.) Selma Got Me Born – NOT EXACTLY, your parents felt safe enough to have you in 1961 – Selma had no effect on your birth, as Selma was in 1965. (Google ‘Obama Selma’ for his full March 4, 2007 speech and articles about its various untruths.)

2.) Father Was A Goat Herder – NOT EXACTLY, he was a privileged, well educated youth, who went on to work with the Kenyan Government.

3.) Father Was A Proud Freedom Fighter – NOT EXACTLY, he was part of one of the most corrupt and violent governments Kenya has ever had.

KEY PROTEST

Protest Obama–let him, the DNC, and the rest of America that we say NO DEAL!!

HOW:

Hold your key ring in your hand, above your head and shake it if you want

WHY:

This is an original not yet branded synbolic gesture that our group can ‘own’ and make its trademark.

Also–it travels well, they can’t id you before you protest, and maybe just maybe you can become a backdrop on stage for Obama and hold your keys up behind him for the world to see

Why the KEY?

1. We Hillary voters are KEY to Dems win
2. Hillary won the KEY states
3. Obama lacks character and courage. McCain is afraid of the sound of keys because his Viet guards’ keys would rattle as they came to torture.

Spread the Word PLEASE

You’re just more of the same and the reason we’ve left other boards. We aren’t impressed by vacant-eyed worshipers of a faux messiah.

Let’s see if I have this right:

You’re impressed by lofty speeches, yet you don’t think it’s odd that the man can’t answer a simple question on a one-on-one basis? It’s because he cannot speak intelligently one-on-one. He needs his puppeteers to make him speak well.

You’re impressed by his Senate record but haven’t bothered to check that it’s non-existant.

As a ‘chattelist’, you’re impressed by his grand lifestyle but you’ve not bothered to check that it was all due to preferential loans and ‘tricks’ by a convicted felon.

You’re impressed by his ‘humanity’ yet I venture a guess he’d never shake hands with the likes of you. You prefer not to see his cold, detached arrogance.

Give us a break. We have no desire to hear anything you have to say. Go back to whatever filthy internet hole you crawled out of, and report that you made no headway here.

You won’t change our minds. You won’t be able to make a soul here vote for your messiah. You’re wasting your time.

What numbnuts said was the type of shit people who do time are want to hear. If you lack the deductive skills to intuit a possible location for his stilted, bigoted remark to have spawned, come ahead.
Otherwise, get your wimp ass back to Sesame Street.

That’s right Tampa
Israel and Iraq are US allies to protect the Gulf States.
Obama courts Israel’s enemies such as Hamas.
Obama wished for defeat in Iraq.
Obama wants to make friends with the terrorists.

Obama sits on his hands and wishes for defeat!

For the record, there is no complete audio tape of Obama’s 2002 anti-war speech. Chicago journalists who attended the rally reported not a single word about what he said. The only way we know what Obama claims he said is because a few weeks after he gave the speech, he submitted an article to the local Hyde Park rag, in which he wrote a few weeks ago I gave a speech and here’s what I said. Seeing as words matter, its surprising that the speech which Mrs Clinton claimed was his only claim to be President …does NOT exist in its original form on a tape. Seemingly he re-created the speech to use in his campaign ads, and crowds noise sound effects were added.

That said here’s what he claimed he said in the local Hyde Park rag
..

.Now let me be clear – I suffer no illusions about Saddam Hussein. He is a brutal man. A ruthless man. A man who butchers his own people to secure his own power. He has repeatedly defied UN resolutions, thwarted UN inspection teams, developed chemical and biological weapons, and coveted nuclear capacity. He’s a bad guy. The world, and the Iraqi people, would be better off without him. But I also know that Saddam poses no imminent and direct threat to the United States, or to his neighbors, that the Iraqi economy is in shambles, that the Iraqi military a fraction of its former strength, and that in concert with the international community he can be contained until, in the way of all petty dictators, he falls away into the dustbin of history.

But on July 2 2005 addressing an environmental group, at the Aspen Institute Obama rewrote history as follows:

“When I was running, in the fall of 2002 … I said this is a bad idea. It certainly wasn’t because I didn’t think Saddam Hussein was a bad guy. I specifically said in a speech in Chicago, it was about six months before the war, I said, I’m not on the federal intelligence committee, but I don’t see any serious weapons of mass destruction. I don’t see Saddam connected to Al Qaida. This is going to cost billions of dollars and thousands of lives… and I think I’ve been pretty restrained in not saying, I told you so….”

Surely someone can see the actual HydePark rag article. I would like to see that. Verbatim. I am really suspicious of what NObama actually wrote and said. It is odd that this speech would be the one and only time NObama has exhibited judgement that is not screwey. So I am suspicious of his having given a speech of real insight.

Another reason I think the fix might be in because if Bush and the US government didn’t want Obama to speak at the Brandenberg Gate, the word would be sent through diplomatic channels to quash the idea of Nobama making that speech. Bush should not allow Nobama to upstage Mccain if that is really what the Republicans and Bush and the “powers that be” want. It is strange that it would be allowed by Germany, Merkel and Bush. Very Very strange!!!

I have a question.

If Hillary were to be nominated at the Convention on August 28, there would only be 8 weeks until the general election.

She basically would have only 8 weeks to get her campaign up and staffed, choose a VP and campaign across the entire country.

Election day needs an enormous ground game to get the vote out. Could Hillary get enough people in place in time? Her track record on ground game during the primary was not a good one as far as building the state party infrastructures from the ground up.

Add to this that all of the local and state politicians who had been campaigning for Obama would have to switch gears, lose face with voters, and say – oops – it’s Hillary now.

It seems like the convention is just too late. For a switch to Hillary to work, it would have to occur early. Much earlier than August 28. Today is July 8.

I told you the Germans would see through this.
They make sure all generations are taught the terrible history of WWII. They don’t make excuses or try to hide it.

Except of course for a few hard core whack jobs. Every country has those.

If this is a privilege normally reserved for a sitting President how did Obama pull this off? That takes a lot of clout from powerful people.

Remember, JFK actually served in WWII. Even if he hadn’t been President most people would not have found his receiving permission odd.

Amazing how a relatively unknown, non-veteran, junior Senator could pull that off.

Obama’s presidential campaign is supported by investment banks tied to the market speculation of oil prices GOP Senator Richard Lugar with Barack Obama in Russia 2005.
Lugar anchored a bill that enabled wall street investment banks to manipulate the price of oil and other commodities. Now Obama has interviewed him for the position of secretary of state.

The issue in this case is the sociopathic grandiosity that Mr Obama shows us, time and time again. He is not the ‘presumptive’ nominee, he is the most presumptuous nominee ever seen in the history of the United States. He has no sense of history (ie talk with dictators cos it worked for JFK…read up a bit on that one Barack) and no sense of proper decorum (making his own seal, disparaging the patriotism of those who wear a flag pin on their lapel) and now this – to be presumptuous enough to believe that All the World is a Stage … just for him.

My two cents – let him get elected first before he stages his take over the world tour. He’s in such a rush to have his time in the spotlight – almost as if – if he waits til we actually vote, he might not get the chance.

if it’s a such a scathing article, then why do you need to use selective wording?

The news also follows a survey taken by Germany pollster Emnid for publication in the Bild am Sonntag newspaper this weekend that found that 74 percent of Germans said that if they could cast a ballot in the US election, they would vote for the presumptive Democratic Party nominee. Only 11 percent said they would vote for his Republican Party contender, John McCain.

man, the desperation here is really showing.

The Brandenburg moment could be Obama’s Dukakis in a tank moment. Or of more recent vintage, Bush in the fly-suit on the deck of the aircraft carrier with the banner Mission Accomplished behind him. You need genuine moral authority to make these moments work, and in Bush’s case, an ability to understand action and consequences of actions.
