BAD MOJO RISING
A malevolent cloud is sweeping across America tonight. It has permeated the air with betrayal and cowardice. Around the District of Columbia, our putative leaders are breathing in the foul stench of capitulation and finding it to not be as nauseating as they imagined it would be. Our fearsome and feckless Democratic Senate is poised on the precipice of utter degradation.
Tomorrow, July 10, 2008, a majority of Democrats in the Senate will march in robotic step with a majority of Democrats in the House and drag our Party, the Constitution and our Republic into the gutter of craven careerism with gusto and enthusiasm. They will vote for the abridged FISA act and gut the Constitution.
Our venerable ”Fourth Amendment” – The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized – will be immolated on the floor of the Senate in the name of “National Security”, which of course will then be impossible to preserve because our “freedom” is our “security”. The stench of this massacre of reason and truth will not be cleansed from our Party for decades to come, let alone from the carpet on the Senate floor.
Oh yes, we know the exhausted elucidations of pragmatic exigency that will be paraded before us – spewing from every mass media outlet – by earnest apologists for the prevaricating “centrist” Democrats. We can see their bloviating bobble heads rising in the mojo mist of dawn even now as we drift off to dream of terrors yet to come. They’ll smugly chortle, “It was the best compromise we could get” or, “Politics is the art of the possible” or perhaps, “There are Islamic Jihadists in our midst!” It will all be lies, disingenuous lies, and damnable disingenuous lies. They will all do it to save their phony baloney jobs. They don’t fear any “terrorists”. These recreant cardboard politicians are afraid they will loose their job and all of the bloated perks that come with it – healthcare, pensions, per diem, staff, travel, dinners, country clubs etc – all of the perks we pay for and they deny us. Therein, dear friends, lies the problem.
One last act before the curtain: will our presumptive Presidential nominee stand for us or lie prostrate before the heel of the tyrants Cheney and Bush? Which Democratic patriots among the cowering 100 will rail against this pulverizing of the, “flag for which it stands for” into nanodust suitable for sweeping under the rug or mounting on a lapel pin? Mark their names fellow Americans; those few who brave the siren call of the incumbency circus. For these are the last representatives left in D.C., from the proud liberal ideal, the New Deal, the Great Society and the Democratic Party. In the dark years to come they will need our help.
So Democrats, if you have ever questioned the need for a Progressive Movement, there will be no better demonstration of its undeniable necessity in our lifetimes than this promenade of submission. Our ancestors are rising from their graves to demand of us the strength to deny this groveling cabal their complete usurpation of our inherent rights and independence. Heed the call. Never capitulate to the clamor for silence and complicity. King George Bush has committed high crimes against America and humanity and the Democratic Congress is aiding and abetting him in this latest illegal act. Will he ever be brought to justice? Will no Democratic leader stop him?
Do not accept the specious narration being offered by Democratic Party leaders, electeds or consultants that the dying light of our Republic and our Party is actually a bright new flame of change. Resist the woeful songs of the gradualists and incrementalists, who claim they are on our side but we will have to wait. Remember July 10, 2008. There’s a bad mojo rising. It not only comes from the Republican Anarchy Collective but from the heart of the Democratic Party. And that is the reason for the Progressive Swarm to renew its commitment to our cause – a Progressive Democratic Party and majority in America. Stand up for your rights. Show up and demand change in the Democratic Party. Speak up whenever and wherever possible and never let anyone shut you up!

During the primary I had been an ardent supporter of Sen. Obama over Sen. Clinton but now I must admit I was wrong and made a huge mistake. I felt President Clinton was corrupt and would interfere with Sen. Clinton’s presidency. I felt Sen. Clinton was too close to the Right Wing of the Republican Party but today I see Sen. Clinton was among the few courageous Senators to vote against the FISA Bill. She did not have to make that vote and could have caved to the Repubs like Sen. Obama has. I feel betrayed by Sen. Obama but even worse I am disappointed that I did not see Sen. Obama’s weakness and lack of character before today. Today Sen. Obama has demonstrated his cowardice and I fear if he is elected we are in for four years of a very weak president. A president too weak and fearful to stand by his convictions. I think we are in for further betrayal. I will write Sen. Clinton and express my support for her actions today. I will thank her for standing by our Constitution and the Rule of Law. I will also pledge my support for any effort she may make to gain the party’s nomination at the convention. It’s that or I will not vote the Presidential ticket this fall.

OK – I knew Obama was going to do this – he said this last week. I still feel it is wrong but not an issue to get my nickers in a twist over. Whether Hillary voted in a calculated manner (and she was for this before she was against it) does not matter. For once I agree with the the people on here – she voted against very bad law.
The Democrats do not need to be scared of being called “soft on terror”, no matter what Obama does on this bill you lot and the Rethugs will still try to lay that card on him. The Rethugs always play it; except now it would not have worked. The Democrats should have held firm on this and blocked it. Individual Rights lost to terrorism mean terrorists have won.

I certainly wouldn’t want you to get your knickers in a twist, but I sincerely would like to know why you’re not concerned? Four things have come out of the Bush years (other than the war) which have caused most Democrats anger and fear; FISA, Gitmo, Patroit Act and the Military Commissions Act. These four have been grievous assaults on our civil liberties and the Constitution.

She has been completely consistent in her opposition There is so much more to this story. Sen. Obama and Sen. Jay Rockefeller have both accepted donations from AT&T and Verizon. The day after the original vote, in Jan.,2008 and after Rockefeller had voted to allow the bill to go forward, he endorsed Sen. Obama who was not present for the vote. Today, I will vote against Republican efforts to shortchange the debate on the FISA Amendments Act, important legislation that would modernize our surveillance laws and give our nation’s intelligence professionals the tools they need to fight terrorism and make our country more secure. Rather than allow the Senate the opportunity to consider important amendments to this vital legislation, Republicans are instead blocking meaningful debate on this bill by playing procedural games, choosing instead to score cheap political points at the expense of our Homeland Security.
This legislation deserves a thorough debate. Several provisions – including those which would have a profound impact on the civil liberties of Americans – need to be the subject of careful deliberation. For example, the bill under consideration gives telecommunication companies blanket retroactive immunity for their alleged cooperation in the administration’s warrantless wiretapping program. I continue to believe that a grant of retroactive immunity is wrong, and I have cosponsored Senator Dodd’s amendment to remove that provision from the bill. The fact is and Obama shoud have learnt this lesson is that the Republicans will still say he is soft on terror. “National Security” is the only issue they can run on. I am so sorry. I just think there are places for compromise in the political system, but there are also places to draw a line in the sand. As the presumptive nominee of the Democratic Party, he will direct the platform. Will it be resolved the Constitutional rights and liberties of all Americans should be protected above all else or will shade to gray in the name of fear of terrorism?
My question is; “where is the line?” I believe there are also questions with the donations he has received from AT&T and Verizon. Why did he vote for immunity? No, it’s because Obama copies everything she does. Obama has gotten it wrong a few times on what Hillary’s positions were… like NAFTA, gun laws and the gas tax. Each time, he thought Hillary had the same position as him on all those issues until they were talked about during the campaign at which point the media did their best to try and ridicule Hillary’s positions, but ended up failing. The most prominent failure was the ‘bitter’ issue.
Unfortunately, this will make some think that it was a calculated move. The Republicans are already jumping on this.

She is not always perfect (having been directly lied to about the Iraq War Authorization vote), but even then, her Senate floor speech was a strong stand for principle and exhaustion of all other options. That is what a real leader does–make a knowledgeable evaluation and follow their convictions, even when only given limited information. She then takes the heat for it if she is wrong. She doesn’t lie and whine. That’s the most we can expect from any human being. Damn! I am so proud of her. (Did I already say that?)

STATEMENT OF SENATOR HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON ON THE FISA AMENDMENTS ACT OF 2008
July 9, 2008
One of the great challenges before us as a nation is remaining steadfast in our fight against terrorism while preserving our commitment to the rule of law and individual liberty. As a senator from New York on September 11, I understand the importance of taking any and all necessary steps to protect our nation from those who would do us harm. I believe strongly that we must modernize our surveillance laws in order to provide intelligence professionals the tools needed to fight terrorism and make our country more secure. However, any surveillance program must contain safeguards to protect the rights of Americans against abuse, and to preserve clear lines of oversight and accountability over this administration. I applaud the efforts of my colleagues who negotiated this legislation, and I respect my colleagues who reached a different conclusion on today’s vote. I do so because this is a difficult issue. Nonetheless, I could not vote for the
legislation in its current form.
The legislation would overhaul the law that governs the administration’ s surveillance activities. Some of the legislation’ s provisions place guidelines and restrictions on the operational details of the surveillance activities, others increase judicial and legislative oversight of those activities, and still others relate to immunity for telecommunications companies that participated in the administration’ s surveillance activities.
While this legislation does strengthen oversight of the administration’ s surveillance activities over previous drafts, in many respects, the oversight in the bill continues to come up short. For instance, while the bill nominally calls for increased oversight by the FISA Court, its ability to serve as a meaningful check on the President’s power is debatable. The clearest example of this is the limited power given to the FISA Court to review the government’s targeting and minimization procedures.
But the legislation has other significant shortcomings. The legislation also makes no meaningful change to the immunity provisions. There is little disagreement that the legislation effectively grants retroactive immunity to the telecommunications companies. In my judgment, immunity under these circumstances has the practical effect of shutting down a critical avenue for holding the administration accountable for its conduct. It is precisely why I have supported efforts in the Senate to strip the bill of these provisions, both today and during previous debates on this subject. Unfortunately, these efforts have been unsuccessful.
What is more, even as we considered this legislation, the administration refused to allow the overwhelming majority of Senators to examine the warrantless wiretapping program. This made it exceedingly difficult for those Senators who are not on the Intelligence and Judiciary Committees to assess the need for the operational details of the legislation, and whether greater protections are necessary. The same can be said for an assessment of the telecom immunity provisions. On an issue of such tremendous importance to our citizens – and in particular to New Yorkers – all Senators should have been entitled to receive briefings that would have enabled them to make an informed decision about the merits of this legislation. I cannot support this legislation when we know neither the nature of the surveillance activities authorized nor the role played by telecommunications companies granted immunity.
Congress must vigorously check and balance the president even in the face of dangerous enemies and at a time of war. That is what sets us apart. And that is what is vital to ensuring that any tool designed to protect us is used – and used within the law – for that purpose and that purpose alone. I believe my responsibility requires that I vote against this compromise, and I will continue to pursue reforms that will improve our ability to collect intelligence in our efforts to combat terror and to oversee that authority in Congress.
