Don Imus versus Bernie Mac
By Kirk Tofte on July 12, 2008 at 9:45 PM in Barack Obama, Sexism
In the spring of 2007 when Don Imus referred to the players on Rutgers Women’s basketball teams as “nappy headed ‘hos” on his radio program, Barack Obama called for Imus to be fired immediately for remarks that were racist (and, one would hope, sexist). Last night Bernie Mac referred to a woman in a joke he told at a big Obama fundraiser as a “’ho” and Obama “chastised” him but then admitted he was “only playing with you, man.”
This story has been reported in various forms at many outlets. Some in the mainstream media covered everything but Obama’s “only playing with you” caveat. Others covered pretty much the entire matter.
But on the Internet, only noquarterusa.net gave it the full treatment it deserved. There was no mention of it on dailykos.com or at politico.com, and talkingpointsmemo.com mentioned it in a second tier article that did not have comments attached to it.
Huffingtonpost.com featured it as a third tier story and allowed for comments. Unfortunately—but predictably—readers there rose to defend Bernie Mac for his comic brilliance.
