Don Imus versus Bernie Mac

In the spring of 2007 when Don Imus referred to the players on Rutgers Women’s basketball teams as “nappy headed ‘hos” on his radio program, Barack Obama called for Imus to be fired immediately for remarks that were racist (and, one would hope, sexist). Last night Bernie Mac referred to a woman in a joke he told at a big Obama fundraiser as a “’ho” and Obama “chastised” him but then admitted he was “only playing with you, man.”

This story has been reported in various forms at many outlets. Some in the mainstream media covered everything but Obama’s “only playing with you” caveat. Others covered pretty much the entire matter.

But on the Internet, only noquarterusa.net gave it the full treatment it deserved. There was no mention of it on dailykos.com or at politico.com, and talkingpointsmemo.com mentioned it in a second tier article that did not have comments attached to it.

Huffingtonpost.com featured it as a third tier story and allowed for comments. Unfortunately—but predictably—readers there rose to defend Bernie Mac for his comic brilliance.

Racism is racism, and sexism is sexism, no matter how you slice it or what race or gender implies or utters it. Bernie Mac is a racist-sexist comedian, period and Barack Hobama should fire him…if he can.

I am still waiting for Al Sharpton’s “march on the party’s Washington headquarters” for seating Florida and Michigan’s delegates.

Imus was a political exercise to demonstrate and reinforce the power of the threat of a “racist” label. No need to do that with Bernie Mac, he’s on the “right” side.

Same thing with Jackson’s castration rant. If that had been done by a white guy, Jackson would be all over the place explaining the historical implication of a threat of castrating a black man. But since Jackson said it (with appropriate hand gesture, to boot), a pass was given.

Here is the full statement Obama made:

About 15 minutes later, Obama tried to smooth things over with a joke of his own.

“We can’t afford to be divided by race. We can’t afford to be divided by region or by class and we can’t afford to be divided by gender, which by the way, that means, Bernie, you’ve got to clean up your act next time,” Obama said. “This is a family affair. By the way, I’m just messing with you, man.

Obama is supposed to be a leader. He should be able to take a stand. This is one more time he flip-flops.

On one hand, he tells Bernie Mac what he said was wrong, and in the next breath he essentially takes back what he said by saying, “By the way…”

By prefacing his “I’m just messing with you,” with “By the way,” Obama is speak code to Bernie Mac saying “Don’t take it personally, I didn’t really mean it.”

Comment by Mr.Murder | 2008-07-12 22:24:49

Wonder who the affair comment was aimed at? NOT.

And the day before, Obama was in northern Virginia making a speech on economic equality for women. http://www.fairfaxtimes.com/news/2008/jul/10/obama-vists-fairfax/ Does he not see that sanctioning crude speech about women does real damage? He should have walked on the stage as soon as Mac made the comments, and asked him to get off.

Obama could not stand up to Bernie Mac? How is he going to stand up to national leaders, who have a lot more personal ooomph than a comedian?

Comment by 30yrdem-not any more | 2008-07-12 22:42:15

You know I think Clinton would have walked out and took the mike away from Mac then apologized …and I also think McCain would have a gotten him off stage and apologized also….they both realize how important the women voters are in a presidential election…Obama is just out to have some fun it sounds like…does he not realize everything he says will be made public….he could never stand up to leaders in other countries..

Independent of logic, he arrives at the conclusion that agitprop political theater gets traction.
http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/la-oe-rutten12-2008jul12,0,1259015.column
This, along with a Rovian orchestration of the theme, culled and cultured by David Axelrod, that McCain is “whining” are not going to gain traction.

Whining, something associated with young voters.

That’s really going to turn the vote around where you hurt the most, Barack. Those older voters throw the phrase ‘whining’ around a lot. Is this Michelle’s ‘whiney’ tape? Why’d he?

Look at the media people carrying Barack’s water now. They advance his talking points. Didn’t we say we’d never support a guy like that when Bush got the same treatment?

A good friend is voting for Nader this time. He’s jumped the shark, and he voted Democratic before that. His cousin was one of nine people in the county(along with myself) who voted for him in prior elections. That man now runs the Democratic campaign offices here. It would be interesting to get his perspective now.

That’s right, he’s flipped two votes Nader’s way by going with DNC mantras. Health care will burn you like no other issue. You flip flopped one vote for two.

Another guy who “never voted Democrat in his life” swears he may vote the GOP this time at a recent holiday cookout. He was a bit sauced though, he said he voted for Clinton twice as POTUS, and he grew up here in Arkansas.

My take on it that he actually meant he never voted Republican, but that would change. That’s the only way his present statement could be consistent with his past votes.

But what does he know, he just works at a supermarket. Donna Brazille is right, the Democratic party doesn’t need those types of people. Just go away!

Reagan Democrats, Clinton Republicans, let them eat gas prices!

But only whites can be obnoxious racists! Didn’t you know that? I mean we’ve been told that over and over again, a mantra of political correctness. And sexist, misogynist gigs? Well, they take second tier at best. Besides, it’s just a bunch of women they’re talking about. Most of whom “deserve” the label of bitch and “ho,” and whatever other derogatory language you can come up with and laugh yourselves silly over. Women are such an overly sensitive lot. I mean that’s what they get for having the nerve of leaving the kitchen and nurseries and trying in that lame and whiney way they have of competing with . . . real men.

Not that Obama or Bernie Mac fall into the category of “real” men, the kind that would break their arms and legs for being so disrespectful.

“I’m just playing with you, man?”

I’d just love it if my husband said something like that.

But then, I’m one of those sensitive types. Bet you can’t guess which lever I will “not” pull in November.

Pathetic losers! And supporters brush this off their shoulders or under the rug?

Losers, every one of them! And then, they wonder and ponder and gnash their teeth over why, oh why Hillary’s supporters won’t cough up money?

They can go straight to Hell.

Comment by Sharon | 2008-07-13 00:21:11

Oh baby! We have an agenda all right! Making sure that lying empty suit obama NEVER gets into the WH. Haven’t you been paying attention?

On top of that, here’s my personal agenda – watching bambi LOSE in complete disgrace and total humiliation (at his own hand, of course – which is not even the slightest reach to imagine). I look forward to seeing the SOB so discredited he couldn’t even be elected dogcatcher.

In other words, my agenda is seeing the “precious” snot get what he deserves.

Don’t even get me started on what you bots deserve…

Comment by Linda Starr | 2008-07-13 10:39:56

I love what you said, but I have a better agenda than that…making Obambi go back to the ‘hood (Senate) and be humiliated by the bruthers (Kerry) telling him (Obambi) he’s just another one of them (senators) now, and a “fool” (loser) for losing his sure fire nomination to the Ho at the last minute.

Like John Kerry, George Mcgovern, Ted Kennedy, John Edwards, or Al Gore are all losers endorsing THIS loser? Jimmy Carter I can forgive for his advanced age, maybe he’s getting a little dementia? And Ted Kennedy for his brain tumor that clearly has affected his mind. What’s the excuse for the rest of them? Even Russ Feingold was bashing the FISA bill that Obambi endorsed, supported and voted for and in the next breath was saying we have to all get behind the fool in order to fix it! HUH???? Has he gone daft in the space of 3 seconds?

The FISA vote alone is reason enough to dump Obambi NOW, before he’s the official nominee. And the DNC actually believes we should get behind a person whose judgment is so flawed that he voted FOR FISA??? I’m amazed Feingoldcould sit there and say it on TV with a straight face! I’m beginning to think people running for office should have to get a metnal health examination as part of the paperwork and screening process. And especially after Bush 43. Do we want or need anymor ementla defectives? Obambi is clearly another dangerous mental case like Bush 43 who needs to be sent home to get his diapers changed and let the grown up Mommy take over and clean up the little boys mess!

Comment by Uppity Woman | 2008-07-13 00:47:12

You still don’t get it.

His campaign is supposed is doing it’s job, to put spin on his bad comments. It’s his attitude that is the problem and very indicative of his misogynistic attitude against women in general.

You just can’t adequately “spin” bad attitude very well. Is this his version of accidently pushing the wrong button in voting? He’s displaying classic anti-women attitudes. Men who make such denigrating jokes directed at women do not love or even like women.

Say what you will, but men who love women do not make disparaging jokes about us.

Imus has a radio show where he typically makes these types of remarks just as many others do as well. Imus and these others are not running for president and one does not have to listen to their show.

Obama, on the otherhand, attended a racist, anti-American church for 20 years and therefore should fire himself from his campaign.

Obamoron’s rationale for McClurkin? “He’s popular with Black Evangelicals.” (And what do Black Evangelicals have in common with their White counterparts? A dislike of gays, especially those so insistent upon being treated as full-fledged American citizens instead of second-class citizens. And, it’s also funny how Black Evangelicals are the loudest to cry “foul” when gays have the audacity to bring up the civil rights movement, especially in relation to same-sex marriage rights.)

They are contibuting to Barr because Barky O Pimp and his wife Ho are lameassed candidates and they need to take votes away from McCain. Thats why we should all contribute to Ralph Nader, who incidentally, will pull far more votes from Shithead than barr will ever pull from McCain.

I made a comment on the first thread about this and I’m not going to go over the same ground.

Personally, I bet Obama was mortified, but in true politician form, he took the safe way out. He chastised Bernie, but underscored it in a way that allowed him to keep his cool creds with black folks.

I don’t agree that other politicians would have played it differently or stopped Bernie in his tracks. John Kerry didn’t when Whoopi made her Bush jokes in 2004; McCain laughed nervously when a woman ambushed him months back with: “How do we beat the bitch?” remark. These moments are not just awkward, they catch politicians off guard in a very public circumstance. We all know full well how the smallest faux pas can derail a candidacy once in the hands of a zealous msm. So they all play it safe.

I mentioned before that this joke was making the email rounds among AAs last year. It’s funny to black people. I’m not going to go into the cultural reasons why. The email version was funnier than the way Mack told it, btw. AAs will not understand what all the fuss is about and white Obamatons will latch on to that as a way of trivializing the ‘joke.’

Bernie Mack was out of his skull to think he could tell a joke like that at a political fundraiser for POTUS. It was a totally inappropriate venue for such a joke. And I say that as someone who read it last year in an email, laughed and passed it along. Had I been there, I would have hissed loudly. and I’m not an Obama supporter.

I’ve come to the conclusion as a result of this primary that there are an awful lot of stupid people in this country. Bernie Mack is but one example. The woman who ambushed McCain with the ‘bitch’ comment, another. These people are not only stupid, but they’re arrogant about it.

Obama is the leading example of this kind of thing. His people were stupid not to vet Mack and prep him. In fact, all of these campaigns need to do that before they let people speak in their behalf.

Like Obama, Bernie Mack is an embarrassment to AAs. Neither one of them are ready for prime time.

The whole thing is just pitiful….Just patitiful…..

I am so sick of the black men who choose to be foul-mouthed sexists, saying anything they want, knowing that it’s practically against the law to call them on it.
As Hank Hill (”King of the Hill”) once asked, and so eloquently: “What-the-hell kind of country IS this, where you can’t hate a man unless he’s white?!”

did you just say Bernie Mac is embarrassing to African Americans? … yeah, it’s clear you’re not one.

BM is funny…. but there is a time and place for certain jokes. A Presidential Fundraiser for a candidate with a “Women Appeal” problem is not the place for misogynist jokes.

On a Vegas stage, or on BM’s show would be one thing. We all know it’s an act. But when you are trying to woo the ladies, calling them Ho’s is probably not going to get you a date.

In a push for the White Male vote, Obama is going to have a fundraiser with Andrew “The Dice Man” Clay.

What do you think ladies? Will that win your hearts?

Comment by Uppity Woman | 2008-07-13 00:54:26

LOL Johnny. Sounds like Pimp and Ho Obama’s kinda guy! Will he Rap too?

Comment by Johnny at Work | 2008-07-13 01:05:24

I have to confess, the Dice Man cracked me up. But, I understood the joke. He was a caricature of a Neandertal, an idiot we could laugh at.

But, even Andrew Clay was shocked at the number of guys who took the joke seriously. He’d hear comments from male idiots like “yeah man, I beat my bitch too” or similar crap.

You were supposed to laugh because the Dice Man was a reject, not because you agreed with him in real life.

Comment by JudyA. | 2008-07-13 11:01:57

I loved Dice. I saw him live. At his show…not a presidential fundraiser.

There’s a time and place.

The real insult is the Blacks who think everything Black is Racist.

When Black Holes are Racist, you know there’s something real mental deficiency involved.

I know, was that the STUPIDIST thing you ever heard? A scientific term is now racist. Black is the absence of light in science (and art!). Thus, the BLACK HOLE.

Maybe they need to be called chocolate instead of black. It’s a term that brings about a more warm fuzzy connotation. Yeah, the chocolate race.

Chocolate humor, chocolate thugs, chocolate holes, chocolate americans, chocolate theology, chocolate ganstas, chocolate pimps, chocolate gang members, chocolate baby mamas, chocolate mac daddys. Nope! There’s still a lot of negativity surrounding the whole thing despite the change to chocolate.

Well, I guess blacks are gonna have to start getting over themselves and decide that they are humans first and a color second. As long as the racist filter keeps them from joining in, they will continue to complain and neglect their own responsibility in making it a better world.

To my friends who have already achieved this enlightenment and happen to be black, you know who you are!!!

Obama was purported to be a post race candidate: the Messianic prophet who would unit the masses. Yeah or Nay???? However, unfortunately, his candidacy has substantially damaged the good will accomplished during the past 40 years. If we keep going at this pace with the calculated/deliberate “reverse discrimination”, a.k.a., “Imus (white) can’t kibbitz….”whaooo he must be fired” per Obama, Rev. Jackson, Rev. Sharpton, etc., etc., etc; but, the “Bernie Mac Man” and every black “Rapper” can and do use the same colloquial expressions and…..whaooo, “he is just messing with you”…and it is A-OK.

Per the 2006 US consensus report, black Americans constitute 12.8% of the over population. This implies that 87.2% of America’s remaining populous have to walk on eggs as to absolutely everything they say or be branded a racist!!!! What the heck is this about??

Another perfect example is the recent “black hole controversy”. The “black hole” is a cosmic vs. scientific term vs. phenomenon that has been the topic of study, investigation, debate for decades. It appears that in Texas an apology was demanded because it was used in analytical terms to stress a point. The judge implied that it was racist.

Now let me get this straight. Was the scientific term “black hole” regarded racist due to the word “black”??? Well, if that is the case what do I do about my black car; my black leather furniture; my black shoes, boots, sandels; my black suits, dresses, skirts, slacks, blouses, nightgowns; my black computer cases; my black printer cases, etc., my black photo copier, my black phones, my black everything, etc., etc. WHAT WORD AM I NOW PERMITTED TO USE TO DESCRIBE MY BELONGINGS?????

This PC bull-CRAP is becoming a disruptive and destructive force against all the good and healing that was/has been accomplished over the past 40 years. Martin Luther King fought the good fight and his honorable sacrifice accomplished much. Men like Spike Lee and his ilk dishonor the Reverend King’s “dream” vs. the subsequent evolution as to a slow but solid healing process.

Comment by bcraig | 2008-07-13 12:39:00

How ignorant do they think we are!!!!

I see Bernie Mac has come out to play the “bad negro” for the Obama “good negro” makeover.

According to a spokeswoman for Obama: “Sen. Obama told Bernie Mac that he doesn’t condone these statements and believes what was said was inappropriate,”

Ahhhhh really sweetie, that’s nice.

I guess you also want us to believe that the Obama campaign didn’t think to ask Bernie Mac for a transcript of his act to review before the performance?
