The Honeymoon Is Over

Freshman Senator and prospective Democratic nominee Barack Obama’s lead over John McCain has dissolved. Obama now ties McCain in Saturday’s Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll and has higher negatives. His media-driven honeymoon is over, and the American public doesn’t believe in Obama’s “change.”

obama-smiley.jpg

The pertinent passage:

McCain is now viewed favorably by 56% of voters, Obama by 54%. Obama receives unfavorable reviews from 44% of voters while McCain is viewed unfavorably by 41%. McCain earns favorable ratings from 32% of Democrats while Obama is viewed favorably by 22% of Republicans. Among unaffiliated voters, McCain is viewed favorably by 58%, Obama by 54%.

Obama was effectively marketed as a transcendent figure that would rise above politics as usual and “change” everything; he tapped into something powerful. He has since shown himself to be a typical politician with a willingness to sacrifice core democratic principles in order to appear as a moderate.

Take his carefully crafted image away, and what are we left with? A facsimile of John Kerry - a wavering candidate that is disliked by middle America, and whom unlike Kerry, lacks experience and has flimsy credentials to be commander in chief.

‘Community organizer’ does not cut it, and his record in the IL legislature (a part time job) is less than stellar. Has anyone even asked Senator Obama about why he killed a GLBT hate crimes bill yet?

Keep in mind folks, that this contest has come to a draw before the Republican attacks have gotten into full swing, and they have plenty more to work with. Every indication is pointing toward November 2008 being an absolute bloodbath.

Barack Obama will only have himself to blame for costing the Democratic party the White House.

mirlo — Egobama great read.

Perhaps he’s an adulation junkie. Maybe the diminishing “nourishment” Sen. Obama receives from “popularity” is actually causing him to ratchet up his pursuit of more and more praise just to get the minimal fix he needs.

We have too many problems in this country — to deal with this man’s massive ego. Sorry BO humility is the name of the game. Demigods are not the style this year we just need a President who cares about the American people. NEXT

He will cost the new democratic party a lot more then the white house.
Any one running who supported him will have a problem.
There will be no money for their races. Voters will most likely not turn out which will hurt the ticket.
He and his cohorts have done more damage to the democratic party than I have ever seen in my lifetime.
Does anyone know how many have left the democratic party this election? less money less votes more losses.

Comment by AnninCa | 2008-07-13 11:02:23

I don’t blame Obama for why I left the Democratic Party. I blame the Democratic Party leaders: Pelosi, Dean, Kerry, etc.

They are the ones who angered me. Obama was entitled to try to sell his own argument that he was the winner, just as Hillary was entitled to sell her argument.

What was wrong was that Dean went on the road to push her out before PA. I won’t ever forget that one. I won’t forget Pelosi announcing before Texas that the candidate with the most delegates should win the SD support. I won’t forget Donna’s remarks that the Democratic Party no longer must worry about white working class and Latino voters because the party is so different now, so urban and young.

All of those plus more made ME reconsider my party affiliation. I want nothing to do with these people.

They have reinforced my opinion regularly. FISA was unnecessary. The DNC rumor-mongering about pushing Hillary off the nomination ballot fueled the flame. The rumor that she “HAS” to pay off her debt OR ELSE is yet another bully example.

I want nothing to do with bullies.

Obama is just a politician, trying to win. But they used their power to promote non-party values. They are the backroom thugs.

And I just say…..no deal.

Comment by Disgusted | 2008-07-13 11:07:49

I agree Ann. Obama has the right to run for POTUS. Provided he is a citizen of course. However the powers that be, Dean, Pelosi, Reid, Kerry, and mostly Donna Brazile have no excuse for their actions.

I totally agree, these people manipulated and bullied others to put have this fraud represent the Dem. Party. It’s too easy to say it’s just Obama. I will never forget come this November.

I went to a fundraiser yesterday for Hillary and BO supporters showed up as well. I wondered if they even put money in the basket to help retire her debt. All that I saw them doing was going around saying “why can’t we unite and get along?” It was quite pathetic really. They were all in their early 20s, graveling and doing their best to apologize to Hillary supporters for bad behaviors during the primary. I overheard one of Hillary’s delegate screaming to an Obot “I TOLD YOU I DON’T WANT TO TALK ABOUT OBAMA BUT YET YOU KEEP ON YAPPING ABOUT HIM. I DON’T WANT TO TALK TO YOU!” It was hilarious.

I listened to all of five minutes of that horrible Mark Green radio show “Seven Days in America” on Air Obama Radio this morning. John Kerry was on, and he was asked “Why should liberals vote for Barack Obama, after he voted for the FISA bill?”

Kerry: “Because President Obama will make changes in that law.”

I’ve always hated Kerry because he’s a mushmouthed insincere moron, but this just proves that Obama supporters will say anything, with a straight face, to excuse their candidate’s behavior.

By Kerry’s logic, Obama should vote to give the President the power to line up the entire population of the US and shoot every third person, and then say “John McCain will USE this horrible power, you can trust me NOT TO.”

Vote for President Obama, only he can save us from Candidate Obama.

Too much.

Comment by Tuppence 411 | 2008-07-13 11:08:16

Uggh Kerry! And I am from Massachusetts. If Kennedy wasn’t ill, this year would have been THE year we could have really dumped him for good. Now, I am not so sure. But Reilly with PUMA support is making him sweat, spending more of Teresa’s ketchup money.

What I am saying is that with Kennedy ill; the political will in MA may not be there anymore to toss Kerry out… the possiblity of having two senators with no senority?? Though many I talk to are outright gleeful about making Kerry squirm, knowing Kennedy’s seat will be vacant gives them pause about actually vote him out. As usually, Ted saves John’s ass again.

Comment by Patti | 2008-07-13 12:54:39

Why is that I felt so guilty in my heart that my feeling was immediately: Screw Ted Kennedy? Even when he was sick…I remember telling a co-worker, if anything happens to this chump I will go to work as usual and totally disregard his life’s celebration. I will close my eyes and go about my business as usual should that day come.

The balloon has busted with this deceit.

Screw Ted Kennedy and the slew of coat tails he’s been riding on all these years. He can shit in his white sailor’s cap and pull it over his ears.

RFK’s family is the epitome of the American family, warts and all, just like the rest of us.

Comment by AX10 | 2008-07-13 13:28:08

What Kerry was saying is that BO voted for the FISA bill after he was against and before he will be against it in the future. See? clear as mud. This twisted argument could only be made by John Kerry with a straight face. You think he would have learned from his own experience.

Comment by hank48188 | 2008-07-13 11:45:10

Obama had done a 180 on this issue, I remember him saying he would lead a filibuster on this FISA Bill, now he’s voting for it. Obama has no convictions and has never taken a stand on any issue in his life.

If BO is the right candidate on FISA, and John Boy thinks he will change it, there is an assummtion on his part that BO will used “Article II powers”.

The Cat’s out of the back. John Kerry damn well knows this and is lying. Just like his comment on why BO would be a bridge to “moderate” Mulims.

If it came down to Up holding the Constitution or Coporate sepratism, BO chose wrong, BO judgement is based on reading him the Sunday funnies.

Comment by s. hall | 2008-07-13 12:12:21

This is the 21st Century. We all need to get a grip.

In this new age, Barakarama will always get a pass -no matter what…did you know he’s a little bit Black? Yes, on his dad’s side.

Does anyone know if we are stil allowed to say the word black? Some people in Texas are having a problem with this terminology because it is a deliberate way of professing our subliminal racism.

Scientists everywhere are trying to come up with a new term for “black hole” as it has been deemed to be some type of code word. Some kinds of Duncan Hines cakes have to either be eliminated or renamed.
Maybe they’ll have a contest or something. Stay tuned.

Now what do I do about my black car? I could pretend it’s red, I guess. Unless red also is a code word for something that I am not yet aware of.

Maybe we should start a movement and begin to pronounce colors in spanish or french?

I don’t think that the convention will do much more than shore up the waning interest. Bad fund raising numbers, celebrity supporter’s gaffes and no more large screaming venues make him look like the empty suit we all knew him to be. I hope Hillary’s debt is paid off soon so that she can ease her way off of the Titanic!

So Seniors, Boomers, Women, White Workers, The Military and Hispanics will do just that. Except for the staying home part. Obama says he doesn’t care. He probably doesn’t because he feels if you don’t show him the proper adulation — he doesn’t need you. Right now his support among Democrats is at 54% which is a Tsunami for him and the Democratic Party. He would need at least 85 to 90% of Democrats just to compete with McCain. I think Obama’s poll numbers are a bit too generous. He can’t raise money, the party can’t raise money. Hillary and McCain are raising money — Obama is clueless what a pariah he has become the down ticket Democrats.

I doubt there will be a TV show in the offing for this moaner who will blame his massive loss on everyone but himself. Success has a million fathers–failure is an orphan.

tricia — Obama is no American Patriot — In fact who knows if he’s an American at all. Perhaps the Party will force Obama to step back from the Presidential Nomination and take VP — but I doubt he would listen. Obama is on an ego trip. He doesn’t see or hear anyone else. This is his ride. To Hell with anyone else.

Comment by Patti | 2008-07-13 13:15:51

If he was a true American patriot he wouldn’t have usurped our party because he is 1/2 black and used in order to screw Hillary. He would have stood beside her and let his time come.

Imagine that - what a wonderful thing it could have been. Respect for Hillary as a proven leader and someone who could have truly brought to life a message of hope and change. Unity in regard to race and gender issues… a thing of the past.

We could have been guaranteed 16 consecutive years in the Oval Office/ White House. We could have watched his children grow up to be something more than just the country’s first daughters …blah, blah, blah…

Things happen for a reason. Now we know who this selfish fraud is and his need for instant gratification. Sickening.

If Obama was truly out for the best interests of the United States and the Democratic Party, he would have waited another four or eight years to run. He would have established a real record as a Senator. He would have allowed himself to evolve into an experienced leader. Instead Obama chose to let his ego get in his way. Obama will deserve it when he loses in November and ruins his chance to ever be taken seriously again as a viable candidate.

As for the so called leaders of the party - I hope they are all voted out and Donna is kicked off tv!

Catherine,
My sentiments exactly. Shame on his “friends” for inflating his already huge ego and overrating his abilities. I have felt all along that BO should have spent the next 8 years garnering senatorial experience. Then I believe he would have waltzed into the White House with tons of experience and a wealth of wisedom/maturity from just “living” life.
It’s really sad that no one could provide the guidance he desperately needed to make a better-informed decision. He is too impatient and immature to lead the most powerful nation in the free world.

Another interesting symptom of Obama’s troubles are the number of people distancing themselves from him over the VP search.

An article today on RCP talks about how McCain has a big field of choices. Obama, not so much.

Biden, Strickland, Webb….all have stated they don’t want the job.

Comment by s. hall | 2008-07-13 12:51:30

anninca That would be another reason to believe that Obama is going to lose. The people who were mentioned — Sistak, Webb, Strickland and Rendell have their own ambitions and don’t want to be part of a losing ticket.

Plus, it’s been fun to watch the badmitton game about Hillary.

Hillary says: I’m not being vetted.
Hillary supporter talks to Obama and pitches Hillary.
Obama says: Hillary’s on the short list.
Obama says: Bill is the problem.

Hillary repeats: I’m not being vetted.

:)

Hillary is pulling his covers in a very nice way on his phony baloney BS. She’s not even being considered.

Then, for more fun, go read Bill Clinton’s comments to the governors. Omigosh…..

He is brilliant. He gave this great speech about how there’s too much divisiveness, people going into their corners, etc., and evoked the name….you ready….of Teddy Roosevelt.

I spit my coffee out. That’s McCain’s new “role model!”

On the surface, it sounded as though Bill was making a great play for unity, and he was doing the presidential dance of giving a bit of history as he’s prone to do. Except his example was T.Roosevelt.

I just love politics.

Bill just said: “Kiss My Ass!”

Not to play Pollyanna here but there may be a silver lining. Assuming the BHO is still the nominee after the August convention (if this trend continues even that may be in doubt) and this downward trend continues into the fall. We may have the curious prospect of a landslide Democratic congressional victory along with a a landslide Democratic presidential defeat.
Yes, we’d have McCain for four years but the current current DNC leadership would be so discredited that we could throw them all out - Dean, Pelosi, Reid, Brazile along with the foaming-at-the-mouth bolshevik/facsists who are trying to hijack the nation (after having hijacked the Democratic party).
And… icing on the cake, BHO would be finished as a presidential contender. That alone is worth four years of McCain IMO.

But as liberal elites it was more important for them to sleep well at night knowing they put an AA in the White House. The fact that he had no record of accomplishment and no Washington experience they convinced us was a plus. They pushed and they pushed and they finally got him but as a result they lost their own credibility.

I think the main goal of the DNC, Republicans and MSM was to get rid of the Clintons. Permanently. The goal was to destroy them. The best news is that it didn’t work. They’ve made Hillary stronger. They said so themselves on CNN on “The Clintons. Never Quit” That is just too funny. Hillary comes of like a superhero now and Obama the zero!

If I can’t vote superhero, I’ll take the hero over the zero!

That show was not too bad to watch for CNN, but what I do realize from it is that Hillary will be getting the blame and these dumbasses really think that we will not fall in line because of our loyalty to Hillary when the reality is we think Obama is scum of the earth or wherever the hell he came from! How can these smart people be so stupid?????

My boyfriend is a loyal dem. He thinks all the stuff I say is just made up internet rumors or it would be all over the news. Well, last night I told him, it’s ok. I guess he missed the lead up to the Iraq war then. The Internet rumors tried to tell people that they weren’t getting the truth from teevee. Not much has changed. The old joke was that freedom of the press was for those who could afford to buy one. The new version is that those who own teevee pretty much control what Americans think is important. The six o’clock news could sink Obama in less that a week if they wanted to. They don’t want to.

“he tapped into something powerful”

The only thing that was “powerful” was that we are coming off the worst administration in American history. People are desperate for change–to ANYTHING. Axelrod exploited that need with a marketing campaign and a blank slate. They further exploited the right wing caricature of Hillary to demonize her and “wallah” a bright, shiny new option was offered to the uninformed masses. Add the corrupt DNC and the absurd media and it brings us a perfect storm.

It’s not too late SD’s!

Comment by ConcernedOne | 2008-07-13 12:28:19

I wonder how low in the polls Obama must drop in order for the SDs to change their votes. Sadly, I don’t believe they would change their votes even if McCain were ahead by 10 points or more come August 27. They would claim that “he still has time to turn things around.” At this point, the only thing left that may change their minds is a major scandal like an indictment in Chicago, or Larry Sinclair breaking through the MSM.

I found the letter very well done and honest, but, it was a waste of time for the writer. Caroline has sold her soul for her own ambition, and no letter from a concern citizen is going to get in the way of her thirst for success. From a purely human point of view I know the effort of the letter was in good intention, that is ,to try to change her view, but, nevertheless it was pointless to try to capture Caroline’s “hungry” mind. Caroline reminds me of a farmer and a horse fable. The farmer comes out early every morning to feed the animals, and the horse’s eyes are firmly fastened on his bag of feed! This bag of feed is Obama and her prize is the bag of grains. These grains will make her stronger and make her a better horse in the future. Unfortunately, she picked the wrong farmer, for the one who could have produced a single slice of bread to satisfy her gnawing politic hunger, was Hillary Clinton, both , Carloline and Ted, embraced the people that are now known to have distance the DNC, and have also distance the voters for this election. I have no respect left for this child.

Serious question, and apppreciate anyone with clinical ore real world experience to comment:

Q. Do you suppose Obama’s admitted past use of drugs such as cocaine, has affected his brain and personality (i.e., the arrogance factor)?

Also, saw a program on brain health that says smoking is a disaster for brain function and I understand he’s fighting that addiction (smoker’s gum, etc.)
Q. Do you suppose the smoking affects one’s cognitive functioning, too? (or, “Precious One’s”…)

I’ve seen some videos of BO speaking off the cuff sometimes when he made no sense, and once he said it was sleep deprivation. Yet I’ve really wondered if something else was going on at other times when he seemed well-rested.

And then, there were Bo’s brain at work during debate performances with Hillary…

Any thoughts?

I quit smoking several years ago after smoking for about 25. It did not affect my thinking at all.

Drug use I wouldn’t know about but I imagine it would have to have been heavy drug use for a prolonged period. I don’t think dabbling in it briefly would have a lasting effect.

His strange remarks are likely more due to his warped values and beliefs than anything else unless of course he is still abusing drugs. I just think he has a personality disorder as well as those that think he is ok.

Comment by s. hall | 2008-07-13 13:22:02

Liberty Belle Good question. I am no expert on the damage cocaine does to the brain cells. But if you look at Bush’s speeches when he was running for Governor of Texas and after he became President there was a marked decline in his speech patterns and his ability to remember what he was saying. For instance, you and I might misspeak but one second later we correct ourselves. Obama and Bush don’t correct themselves because they have no idea they have misspoken. Your concern is also mine–we see the damage which can be done by a President who has taken drugs. We certainly don’t need another one.

Comment by csuzeq | 2008-07-13 13:36:04

Absolutely! Alcoholics and drug addicts are infamous for being blamers! Nothing is ever their fault. I know I was an alcoholic’s wife for 13 years and divorce now for 10. Still every problem he has is my fault and I rarely talk to the man. This continues on even after they quit using because the brain is permanently damaged and actually shrinks. I studied this for 13 years. Also, I have herad that experts say, Addicts get stuck in time the age they were when they became addicted. If they were 14 when they started being an addict, they will forever act like a 14 year old mentally, etc. Also addicts believe they are entitled.

Comment by AnnieCarmel | 2008-07-13 18:14:01

Yes, and one of the characteristics of coke heads is the self aggrandizement that both he and Bush exhibit. They both think they have a direct line to God and Obama’s case he thinks he is God.

Most people I have known who quit smoking are pretty cranky (pun intended) while undergoing the cleansing of all that stuff in their lungs and skin (Can’t I just eat my waffles?”). Addicts usually supplement with nicotine and sugar when going through withdrawal. Oh, he’s got problems all right and many more than 99 of them.

It’s quite a bit worse than this. Obama may have had a slight lead in the popular vote over McCain, in past polls, but a closer look revealed that McCain kicks his ass when it comes to electoral votes. In our system of election, electoral votes matter and the popular vote does NOT (except with regard to how this influences electoral votes).

Now, Obama’s support is collapsing. Unless a MAJOR scandal breaks with regard to McCain, Obama’s campaign is finished before it even began.

However, it is FAR more likely that a major scandal will break out, for OBAMA. And it really says something that the republicans seem to be positioning themselves to make gains as the fallout from this hurts the democratic party in general.

The way I see it, there is only one way to avoid this. And that is for democrats to change their mind and nominate Clinton during the actual convention. She won’t win, because of the harsh alienation of the black votes. But, she won’t take the party down with her, either. Obama WILL take the party down…..mark my words.

Comment by AnnieCarmel | 2008-07-13 17:56:54

Couldn’t agree more. It may not fracture in as many directions as 1968 brought on but it will be deeper and long lasting. This is truly the time for a third party organization to step up.

If Obama does take the nomination and McCain wins the GE, there’ll be nothing to keep Hill from splintering off and we’ll be there for a new coalition.

obama=manchurian candidate.

who he is working for we can only surmise.

offhand some guesses would include Zbig Brezinski, party jumping ex-repubs from wall street, global oligarch fascists both seen and unseen led by their figurehead george soros. i’m sure we can add on to this short list.

but what’s the point?

my big question is how do we excuse superdelegates who should know better?

are they being duped, bought off, strong armed with offers they can’t refuse, inside info bamboozlement….pick any or all of the above.

the whole thing is, and has been for a very long time ,basically in the can for obama. Sen McCain will get the same treatment from all the usual suspects that Hillary got…with as much satisfaction.

we can all vote for McCain as a protest/ civil action against the DNC/obamacoup , but we don’t count the votes, do we?

no, we don’t.

enough said.
