“Crowd erupts during Obama speech–but it’s over mention of Clinton”

Barack Obama spoke “(in English) to the National Council of La Raza in San Diego,” reports the Los Angeles Times blog, Top of the Ticket. Obama rattled off some policy proposals:

It was then that the crowd erupted in enthusiastic applause and warm cheers. But not over Obama’s policy proposal.

What ignited that outburst was the mere mention by Obama of the name Hillary Clinton, his vanquished party opponent.

She wasn’t there, of course. But in absentia the Democratic Party’s loser got a noticeably warmer response than the winner, perhaps a reflection of that lingering party unity thing that was taken care of up in Unity.

We trust that Denver delegates and superdelegates are taking note that the passionate support for Hillary Clinton remains as robust and heartfelt as always, and that Mr. Obama does not enjoy the same kind of support.

Perhaps Obama’s failure to DO his job in the U.S. Senate is one of the reasons.

From Katmandu2’s “Obama Pads His Resume on Immigration“:

The bottom line is this: Obama has not been truthful about his accomplishments on immigration legislation. The piece opens with a clout:

WASHINGTON — No matter if you are—or are not — voting for presumptive GOP nominee Sen. John McCain (R-Az.), he deserves credit for trying to forge a bipartisan deal on immigration in 2005 and 2006 at great personal political risk, a situation unfamiliar to rival Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.)

The importance of the piece is that it calls into question Obama’s veracity:

In the meantime, Obama on the campaign trail inflates his leadership role — casting himself as someone who could figure out how to get something done. Obama “did not absolutely stand out in any way,’’ said Margaret Sands Orchowski, the author of “Immigration and the American Dream: Battling the Political Hype and Hysteria,” and a close follower of the legislation.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), a McCain ally and a key player on immigration, said Obama was around for only a “handful” of meetings and helped destroy a 2007 compromise when he voted for making guest worker visa programs temporary. A permanent guest worker program was to be a trade for a legalization program to cover many illegal immigrants.

“When it came time to putting that bill together, he was more of a problem than he was a help. And when it came time to try to get the bill passed, he, in my opinion, broke the agreement we had. He was in the photo op, but he could not execute the hard part of the deal,” Graham said,” Graham said.

It’s worrisome enough that Barack Obama has served such a short time in the U.S. Senate.

It’s deeply troubling that, in that short time, he did not DO THE WORK or LIVE UP TO HIS WORD.

When we criticize Mr. Obama, we often say that he is nothing more than a “typical politician.”

However, even “typical politicians” — at least the focused, smart politicians — understand that they have to SHOW UP and FOLLOW THROUGH in order to develop the trust and credibility necessary to build those vital relationships essential to realizing big ambitions.

How could a President Obama hope to work “across the aisle” as president if he didn’t even bother to do so as a junior senator?

BTW, I can’t think of a single incident where that happened at an Obama event.

Where is the outrage?

Unfortunately, it seems Barack backtracked a bit (ok- a lot) with his vote on FISA.

Nice try spreading that disinformation. Doesn’t always work, though, does it?

Every time Obama visited my state during the primaries, it was an “invited guests only” event. Every time Hillary and Bill were here, it was free and open to the public.

Same in my area , invite only, closed to the public.

I wandered over to an Obambi event in Harrisburg, Pa just to take a look. It was open to all, until about 30 minutes before show time, when they stopped letting people in. In Wilmington, NC he had an event where they screened people. It didn’t look as bad as Bush though. Hillary gave a fantastic speech to a packed crowd by the river in Wilmington,NC the day before Obambi’s. I was jazzed for a day after that one. I wonder what it would take to get her out and making some speeches again?

“Every time Obama visited my state during the primaries, it was an “invited guests only” event.”

I think I can help with this one-
now I apologize in advance, the ‘blacks’ in the audience may not qualify as humans to some of the ’symphony-going’ members of this blog- but tickets for this event were available for free on the Obama webpage:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PuFiplLrSAI&feature=related

Should I find some more? Or am I gonna get the “well that was only one event” response?

Comment by Lucinda | 2008-07-14 19:33:46

I’m going to let your race-baiting remark pass, because I don’t know what you’re talking about. He only had two events in my area of the state, and both the Raleigh News & Observer and Fayetteville Observer reported that they were “for invited guests” and said nothing at all about obtaining free tickets from his website. Obama only had a handful of personal appearances in N.C. My guess is that he knew he didn’t have to try too hard to win here. BTW, the events for Hillary, Bill and Chelsea didn’t require tickets—FREE or otherwise.

Comment by Hope Floats | 2008-07-14 19:44:02

I don’t understand your point. You’re saying “invitation only” doesn’t count if it’s a euphemism for “blacks.”

Comment by Georgia | 2008-07-14 19:54:50

The point was that no matter how much you bitch and complain, this statement:

“Every time Obama visited my state during the primaries, it was an “invited guests only” event.”

is blatantly false. I think it’s even funnier that he’s now being attacked because too many people show up to his events and they’re forced to hand out free tickets.

(Comments wont nest below this level)

Comment by HolyGaucamole | 2008-07-14 20:18:26

but tickets for this event were available for free on the Obama webpage:

This doesn’t sound very free and open to the public to me. It sounds like an Obama-supporters only event, because that’s the only people who would see it on his website.
While the original poster did make a generalization, which is what you obviously object to, she was probably talking about it being advertised in advance as free and open to the public.
At any rate, you’re getting your panties in a twist over something that isn’t going to break Obama’s campaign. He’s doing a good enough job of that all by himself.

She was a retired reporter, part time librarian, who was protesting on rented, city-owned property. You may contest whether or not rented city-owned property is or is not open to the public but McCain did not throw her out.

She was asked to get rid of the sign or join the other protesters in the area set up for that purpose. She refused to toss the sign and was asked to leave.

The whole thing seems staged in the first place. That’s why she is referred to as a librarian and not a retired reporter. No one likes reporters… She was there with a group called ProgressNowAction.

And the event was open to everyone, supporters and opponents alike.

That’s because we don’t act like fucking children and crash campaigns with handmade signs accusing our opponents of what is tantamount to war crimes they didn’t commit. If you’re going to scream in the middle of a presidential candidate’s speech and act like the “don’t taze me bro” jackass, then you should be hosed down and wrapped in a straightjacket like the goddamn bedlamite you are, librarian or not. Use your right to protest where you’re not pissing off a bunch of people who came to ask questions of a candidate before they vote.

If you were at the first UNITY event in Unity N.H. you would have witnessed first hand the Obama peoples’ treatment of the Hillary supporters.
Anyone with a pro Hillary sign was told that they could NOT bring them into the event. Obama’s crew was handing out the signs that they wanted exposed for their STAGED event. I saw at least a dozen Hillary supporters harrased and or escorted out of the event. The local police were very professional and did not try and push the Hillary people around. The police told us that Obama rented the school site were the event took place , so yes , he could dictate who and what would be allowed at the event. But as long as we were not on the school property then we could display and say whatever we wanted. Obama people wanted us to be escorted about a 1/2 mile away to voice are protest. Police said no way ! N.H. Live free or Die !!!

Heh. I always thought Dylan was a pretentious snob. He and Neal Young were always making comments about how music ceased to be relevant when they were no longer fashionable. They both write songs that sound better when performed by other people. Dylan can’t play the harmonica or the guitar well. He can’t sing worth a damn. He has no roots in folk tradition, either. He co-opted the music of the working class whites, so that he could pander to self-important, egotistical, holier than thou assholes of the left, people who prefer talking about “hope” and “change” instead of doing anything to bring it about. Limousine liberals. Wine wankers. Urban hippies. They are soulless pretenders like Bob Dylan himself.

Here he is. I don’t know if Bob Dylan’s trying to be Prince or Johnny Cash in this underwear commercial.

In fact, I worked in the production office of a baroque opera company in NYC for two years and still attend the theatre, opera, ballet and symphony regularly. The rhythm is good, but the words are too offensive and violent. I’ve heard a lot of obamatrots like it. Do you like rap? I expect you do because I expect you have no problem with sexism and being offensive. Are all of you the same because I would swear you have been here before. Maybe you just changed your name? After weeks of arduous negotiations, on April 6, 2006, a bipartisan group of senators burst out of the “President’s Room,” just off the Senate chamber, with a deal on new immigration policy.

As the half-dozen senators — including John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.) — headed to announce their plan, they met Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.), who made a request common when Capitol Hill news conferences are in the offing: “Hey, guys, can I come along?” And when Obama went before the microphones, he was generous with his list of senators to congratulate — a list that included himself.

“I want to cite Lindsey Graham, Sam Brownback, Mel Martinez, Ken Salazar, myself, Dick Durbin, Joe Lieberman . . . who’ve actually had to wake up early to try to hammer this stuff out,” he said.

To Senate staff members, who had been arriving for 7 a.m. negotiating sessions for weeks, it was a galling moment. Those morning sessions had attracted just three to four senators a side, Sen. Arlen Specter (R-Pa.) recalled, each deeply involved in the issue. Obama was not one of them.

[...]

Immigration is a case in point for Obama, but not the only one. In 2007, after the first comprehensive immigration bill had died, the senators were back at it, and again, Obama was notably absent, staffers and senators said.

At one meeting, three key negotiators recalled, he entered late and raised a number of questions about the bill’s employment verification system. Kennedy and Specter both rebuked him, saying that the issue had already been resolved and that he was coming late to the discussion. Kennedy dressed him down, according to witnesses, and Obama left shortly thereafter.

“Senator Obama came in late, brought up issues that had been hashed and rehashed,” Specter recalled. “He didn’t stay long.”

Just this week, as the financial markets were roiling in the wake of the Bear Stearns collapse, Obama made another claim that was greeted with disbelief in some corners of Capitol Hill.

On March 13, Dodd, the chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, and Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.), chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, unveiled legislative proposals to allow the Federal Housing Administration to guarantee new loans from banks willing to help homeowners in or approaching foreclosure. Obama and Clinton were in Washington for a day-long round of budget voting, but neither appeared at the housing news conference.

Yet Obama on Monday appeared to seek top billing on Dodd’s proposal.

“At this moment, we must come together and act to address the housing crisis that set this downturn in motion and continues to eat away at the public’s confidence in the market,” Obama said. “We should pass the legislation I put forward with my colleague Chris Dodd to create meaningful incentives for lenders to buy or refinance existing mortgages so that Americans facing foreclosure can keep their homes.”

Do you not read or not have comprehension skills? The crap that was added made the bill one that he could not support. Too bad Obama doesn’t have the same morality when it comes to FISA, NAFTA or any of the other policies he claimed to have supported to differentiate himself from HRC only to disavow them once he “Alice Palmered” her … really, the man is a pig.

As a Hispanic voter, Hillary is still my first choice, because to me she’s the most qualified and knowledgeable in the issues of all candidates.
If somehow Mr. 0 gets nominated in Denver, I will vote for Nader-Gonzalez, because then ‘it is a historical opportunity’ for a Hispanic to be Vice-President, and anyone not voting that way must be a GD racist, as I recently learned.
I guess Mr. 0 supporters fully understand. No?

Comment by onlylewis | 2008-07-14 17:06:13

Any vote for Nader, Barr or Mckinney is a vote for Obama. So think it through before you pull the lever. A vote for McCain is the only one that can beat obama. A protest vote for Nader may put Obama in the Oval office.

Matt Gonzalez wrote a nice indictment of Obama for CounterPunch.

http://www.counterpunch.org/gonzalez02292008.html

This is a candidate who says he’s going to usher in change; that he is a different kind of politician who has the skills to get things done. He reminds us again and again that he had the foresight to oppose the war in Iraq. And he seems to have a genuine interest in lifting up the poor.

But his record suggests that he is incapable of ushering in any kind of change I’d like to see. It is one of accommodation and concession to the very political powers that we need to reign in and oppose if we are to make truly lasting advances.

Winston-like, you come here to hijack and pollute our threads because you cannot bear that people might commit the speechcrime or thoughtcrime of saying anything other than the mantra-like dogma of the Big Brother Obamaborg. Take your newspeak and shove it down the throats of your supporters where it belongs: after all, the elites need their pate.

Comment by blech | 2008-07-14 15:53:48

You seem concerned that someone might express views with which you disagree. In fact, your use of the pollution trope expresses a real fear. It is you who seems to find disagreement to be a crime of some sort. I most certainly do not.

Comment by Steven Mather | 2008-07-14 16:23:13

blech,

Your style of flood-posting is recognized as a tactic to prevent people of somewhat like minds from communicating with each other in internet postings. It is a form of cyberbullying intended to disrupt freedom of association. In this campaign, it has been used to effectively push Hillary supporters off of democratic blogs.

You say you are only practising free speech, however, you are one of those who claims the right to free speech without also adopting the responsibility to practise free speech in a way that does not inhibit the free speech of others. We come here to learn and teach each other. You come here to propagandize. Like your FISA-supporting, “freedom is slavery” candidate, you “game” free speech to your advantage, which effectively negates free speech in practise. You incessantly interject. You hijack threads and say you’re only posting information, but that information is unrelated to the post. You work against the flow of conversation because you do not love the exercise of liberty.

Your undergraduate attempt at a psychologizing trope that purportedly unveils my fear of alternate views is an interesting case of projection, inasmuch as your raison d’etre is to prevent the bloggers and posters of this site to share their ideas with each other.

I do not fear you. I smell your fear. I challenge you to debate me (or any of our bloggers who are interested) on blog radio. As an old, meat-and-potatoes lefty, I’m ready to debate you on issues where Obama has abandoned earlier democratic principles. You have stated that you agree with his pragmatic approach. I don’t. Let’s debate.

Please check out my debate proposal to sfhilary on the old blog on Rove for a list of suggested topics.

Amen, Steve! Did Obama ever campaign as a pragmatist? This line of “argumentation” by the Obamatons sounds more like rationalization to me. Also, according to his zombie followers, Obama has always been centrist–therefore, his recent flip-flops are justified and accounted for!

Give me a break! Obama campaigned as a “different” kind of candidate and to the left of HRC–but in reality he’s all over the map! Who is this guy? The Obamatans didn’t know at the beginning of the primaries nor do they know now!

Here a few articles concerning Obama, his newly found positions, and the possible shenanigans behind his candidacy:

Hook, Janet, Peter Wallsten, and Peter Nicholas (LA staff writers), “Obama, McCain agree on many once-divisive issues.” LA Times (July 13, 2008).

Obama Bullying Hillary Out of Convention?

Excerpt:

Sue Castner of Portland is a longtime Clintonite who was a big fund-raiser for Hillary Clinton and will be one of her delegates at the Democratic National Convention. Nobody was more loyal. Days before Clinton dropped out of the race, Castner told me: “If it comes down to a [convention] floor fight, I grew up in New Jersey. I’ve got brass knuckles. I am not remotely afraid of a floor fight.”

Castner is still coming to terms with the reality of Barack Obama as the Democratic nominee, judging by an e-mail of hers (see it after the jump) that is making the rounds. Castner was in a group of Clinton supporters who met with Obama and Clinton on June 26 in D.C. - and she wasn’t too happy with how it went.

Ms. Castner’s email: http://countusout.wordpress.com/2008/07/14/obama-bullying-hillary-out-of-convention/

He wants to vet Big Dawg but is not vetted himself?
What’s big dawg got to do with it? There are so many Obama lies in this one story it’s a fantasy.

It is absolutely standard operating procedure that vice-presidential candidates today must be fully vetted,” a Democratic official close to the Obama campaign told The Daily Telegraph.

Comment by bemused | 2008-07-14 20:06:11

Translation: Bill told BO to kiss his ass, so did Hill’s donors, BO hasn’t got a chance to get her anyway, he’s making up a story that it’s his call.

Comment by elise | 2008-07-14 21:10:07

Pew, that article is another joke. Bill Clinton has refused to be involved with Obama’s campaign, but they would love to force him in if they could. I don’t think it’s ever been her intention to run with him and that’s a huge relief.

Comment by kcfromtx | 2008-07-14 16:08:30

so what exactly is the point here?

Look forward to a few pro-Obama bloggers having aneurysms when the Repubs start pounding the living shit out of Obama for all of this. The Marshalls, Aravosis’, Huffingtons, Molitsas and Coles could barely keep it together when us Hillary supporters raised legitimate questions about Obama.

Comment by Georgia | 2008-07-14 18:17:56

Exactly:

Barack Hussein Obama is an Osama bin Laden loving, flag-burning, militant-marrying Muslim.

Keep pushing that scribe. It reveals enough about the supporters of this blog to let the sane realize exactly what is going on- epsecially when the true Hillary supporters here refuse to practice what they preach and denounce this nonsense.

Comment by Hope Floats | 2008-07-14 20:54:31

I read MO’s thesis, and she sounded pretty damned militant in the Stokely Carmichael tradition. Bill “Flag-Stomping Ayers” was more than the guy down the street, too. He was a mentor, a colleague, and he and his wife along with Obama threw a dinner for Rashid Kalidi; Obama identifies with his philosophy. That’s why Obama announced his run for the US Senate in Bill Ayers’ living room. There’s plenty of smoke with that fire. I won’t vote for him, because he’s a sexist pig who plays the victim when it suits him.

I just love this Video! And I love Hillary-Hillary is pure and her spirt witin her shows so bright on the outside. She is one in a million. Her eyes shine with love and true. Her words are spoken with such a breath of freash air.She is the one we need.

I will not give up on seeing Hillary in Denver.I surely hope that the democratic party and Obama and his camp does not try and stop this.Hillary has her right in going. This would be a big-big mistake as we are all watching to see what happens for Denver.

Mean while we need to see how to get Obama to front his real birth certificate. And why isn’t the democratic party coming in on this? What is Obama hiding by not doing a thing on this.Is it like maybe looking to buy time.

I will not vote Obama. If Hillary is locked-blocked out of the Denver convention-Then we have another good choice. McCain 08

Hillay we then can see in 2012.

We Hillary supporters will not forget of the treatment of msnbc-The democratic party,Hello Donna Brazile,Ring any bells?

We will not come around as stressed at the May 31 convention as they wanted us to do just before they kicked Hillary and her supporters again.
