Who Doesn’t Get Satire NOW?

newyorker-bernie.jpg

The absolutely brilliant cover of this week’s New Yorker magazine has progressive Internet sites up in arms. (Check out Memeorandum.com’s tracking of the flood of blog posts.) For example, at dailykos.com over 1,400 comments have been made in less than two hours about the topic, “OMG and WTF, have you seen this?”

The cartoon shows Barack Obama giving a fist bump to Michelle Obama. He is dressed in Arab garb and she looks like Angela Davis with her ‘fro and an AK-47 strapped over her shoulder. Looking over the couple is a smiling portrait of Osama bin Laden. In the fireplace, an American flag is burning.

Shocking? Not really. In this cartoon the Obamas are standing in the oval office. This week’s issue of the New Yorker has a long, long article about Obama’s days in Chicago. The cartoon is an obvious caricature of the way Obama is seen by the ten percent of Americans who still think he is a Muslim.

But who are the low information voters now? Last night, at dailykos.com, it’s like the last day at Jonestown. The kool-aid has really gotten to these people.

But let’s destroy the New Yorker! You know, the people that employ Seymour Hersh and so forth.

Here’s my letter (I didn’t copy on the article because I’m still waiting for my issue to arrive!):

Dear Editors:

I wanted to write to support your magazine cover of July 21, a satirical portrait of the Obamas as closet terrorists gaining the White House.

I am a subscriber and I love your covers most of all. I have framed quite a few. I’m sure you will be inundated with barely coherent from rage Obama supporters who are unclear on the concept of satire when it comes to having a sense of humor about the candidate they worship all out of proportion. That’s why I wanted to make sure you knew there are readers out here who are in support of your cover commentary.

In fact, this is long overdue, but I also want to thank you for the covers you commissioned during the dark times immediately following 9/11. They were both thought-provoking and oddly comforting.

Please continue your tradition of provoking thought, whether or not it’s comforting to all!

I actually canceled my subscription 4 months ago because I couldn’t take the blatant anti-Hillary crap they would publish every week. There is one writer there that has a serioius hard-on for Hill, I can’t recall the name, but it was too much and I called and wrote to tell them goodbye!

Have they gotten better after Hillary suspended?

Comment by Sprout | 2008-07-14 14:19:01

I agree. Those who are up in arms are not people who would normally read a single article from the magazine because they wouldn’t understand it. They don’t see it as sattire and very fitting, they see it as an attack on their “God” just like the muslims did when the cartoon circulated of Muhammed.
The low level mindset gets infuriated instead of stimulated by opposing ideas, that’s why it’s impossible to speak intelligently with an obamabot, they have no intelligence to use in the conversation.

The New Yorker has a long and proud history of publishing cartoons and satire.

My favorite blog comment of “outrage” came from a guy who said this cover shows why he will NEVER visit New York. WTF?

Obama has some seriously weird supporters.

That’s interesting that you mentioned 9/11 in your letter. I referenced it too but for a different reason.

I was drawing the similarity between the Bush administration using the aftermath to stop any perceived criticism and the Obama campaign using the historic nature of this election to do much the same thing.

======

About this week’s issue: Our cover, “The Politics of Fear,” combines a
number of fantastical images about the Obamas and shows them for the obvious
distortions they are. The burning flag, the nationalist-radical and Islamic
outfits, the fist-bump, the portrait on the wall— all of them echo one
attack or another. Satire is part of what we do, and it is meant to bring
things out into the open, to hold up a mirror to prejudice, the hateful, and
the absurd. And that’s the spirit of this cover. In this same issue you will
also see that there are two very serious articles on Barack Obama
inside….

Comment by Peggy Sue | 2008-07-14 13:16:57

Good letter, Zee!

I had a feeling this was going to backfire. The real irony is that the Obamatrons, the very group this cover would presumably amuse [because they're so smart and sophisticated], are going berserk.

Satire, a lost art. Obamatrons, brains lost in space.

Can it get anymore bizarre? But then, I guess that’s a risky question ;0).

Thank you for your cover today! I find it amusing that the Obama-bots can’t seem to get ’satire’ – and neither can the candidate.

This lack of sophistication by the candidate and his followers is disturbing. I hope you will NOT apologize for one thing. The entire cover is brilliant and the in depth coverage of his campaign is much needed.

He’s not the maverick he pretends to be. He’s just another boring, ho-hum politician but in this case, he’s a politician with no experience and no work history – a virtual empty suit.

BTW, Obama’s thin skin (and that of his followers’) is going to get really old for everyone by November. He should be glad they didn’t make a nutcracker out of him. But maybe they can make one out of Jesse Jackson.

Obama was used to (try to) push Hillary out. Period. Unelectable throw-away. Hillary only candidate who will potentially employ FDR-like policies to handle currently accelerating monetary-financial collapse and attendant imposition of fascism. Soros (as typical representative of mega-financiers and WTO, etc.) and his groups strongly financially supported Obama from state leglis days.

We must defend Hillary from mega-financier free-trade scum who intend to impose an as yet unidentified “compromise/unity” candidate during the late August convention. THAT candidate will lead the USA and the world to hell.

Now will the dems stop blocking us from using our resources? or will they continue there communist ways, so that their friends, Putin and China take our oil?offshore drilling
By BEN FELLER, Associated Press Writer 32 minutes ago
WASHINGTON – In another push to deal with soaring gas prices, President Bush on Monday will lift an executive ban on offshore drilling that his stood since his father was president. But the move, by itself, will do nothing unless Congress acts as well.

The president plans to officially lift the ban and then explain his actions in a Rose Garden statement, White House press secretary Dana Perino said.
There are two prohibitions on offshore drilling, one imposed by Congress and another by executive order signed by former President Bush in 1990. The current president, trying to ease market tensions and boost supply, called last month for Congress to lift its prohibition before he did so himself.
But Perino said Bush no longer wants to wait. She pinned blame on the leaders of the Democratic Congress, noting that no action has been taken on this issue.
“They haven’t even held a single hearing,” Perino said. “So we are going to move forward, and hopefully that will spur action by the Congress.”
Asked if Bush’s action alone will lead to more oil drilling, Perino said, “In terms of allowing more exploration to go forward? No, it does not.”
The president, in his final months of office, has responded to record gas-prices with a series of proposals, including more oil exploration. None would have immediate impact on prices at the pump, according to White House officials, who say there is no quick fix. But starting action now would help, they say.
Bush’s proposal echoes a call by Republican presidential candidate, Sen. John McCain, to open the Continental Shelf for exploration. Democrat Barack Obama has opposed the idea and instead argued for helping consumers with a second economic stimulus package including energy rebates, as well as stepped up efforts to develop alternative fuels and more fuel-efficient automobiles.
“If offshore drilling would provide short-term relief at the pump or a long-term strategy for energy independence, it would be worthy of our consideration, regardless of the risks,” spokesman Bill Burton said in a statement. “But most experts, even within the Bush administration, concede it would do neither. It would merely prolong the failed energy policies we have seen from Washington for thirty years.”
Congressional Democrats have rejected the push to lift the drilling moratorium, accusing the president of hoping the U.S. can drill its way out a problem.
Bush says offshore drilling could yield up to 18 billion barrels of oil over time, although it would take years for production to start. Bush also says offshore drilling would take pressure off prices over time. In addition, the president has proposed opening the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge for drilling, lifting restrictions on oil shale leasing in the Green River Basin of Colorado, Utah and Wyoming and easing the regulatory process to expand oil refining capacity.
Congressional Democrats, joined by some GOP lawmakers from coastal states, have opposed lifting the prohibition that has barred energy companies from waters along both the East and West coasts and in the eastern Gulf of Mexico. A succession of presidents, from Bush’s father — George H.W. Bush — to Bill Clinton, have sided against drilling in these waters, as has Congress each year for 27 years. Their goal has to been to protect beaches and coastal states’ tourism economies.

In Obama World, Pumas don’t matter, they are irrelevant, and will never be part of the “New Democratic Party”. The only people that Dean and Obama consider to be real Democrats are those who unequivocally agree with whatever policies the party’s candidate adopts. There is no room for dissent, no room for individual thinking and no room for steadfast values. In Obama world, there are no steadfast values, only positions and power; positions that will shift based upon which crowd you are pandering too, and positions that will shift in order to gain political power. In Obama world, campaign supporters are to accept whatever lies and broken promises occur, so long as ultimate power is obtained. But then again, Dean & Obama have yet to figure out that we live in the real world.

Obama asked for it. His ghetto humor is coming back to haunt him. He’s invoking JayZ’s brush-off in speeches; playing rap music at rallies (99 problems but a bitch ain’t one) and inviting Bernie Mac to add a little ghetto spice to his fundraisers.

ferchrisesakes. Just think of it. This is not what America needs–a man so puffed up with his own KOOL that he thinks what this nation needs is jokes about HOs, Rap Music on his iPod, and Bernie Mac hosting White House functions.

How utterly humiliating for the Democratic Party. Our “presumptive” nominee refuses to attend a town-hall event to speak to military members, but wants to hold a mass rally at the Brandenburg gate. He’s not only a liar, he’s a coward; but he’s an arrogant coward.

He is so eaten up with his own arrogance, he cannot even see how ridiculous he looks–indeed, how alarming he looks–to the average american. No one over the age of 30 could possibly view this nominee as SERIOUS.

Your ghetto comment was right on…flipping a former first lady the finger doesn’t exactly transcend respect to our young people either. Obama is not Presidential material…maybe he could go back to the Senate and rehabilitate himself and really do something to make a positive impact on his district..he could start with some speaches at his church…

I used to throw those rap dics out the window when I would find them in my car…I hated that my son would listen to that trash..but at 23 even my son no longer listens to it …I don’t want a President who does..

Exactly! If the Obambi prick had done that to my wife I would have broke all the fingers on that hand of his. Obambi has no class or a proper sense of decorum , yet he acts like a king besmirched when he does not get his way, classic narcissism at play with him. He deserves the New Yorker article, he owns it, lol.

Fist bumping, tell me what rational world leader does that, it diminishes the office of President, it’s a childish embarrassment.

Flag burning, should be nothing new to Obambi, his long time friend Ayers was great for burning flags and Obambi has yet to admonish Ayers.

Michelle with an AK-47, reminds me off, for the first time in my life, lol. She said it, she wears it!!

Obambi with headdress, so what’s the big deal, Obambi in fact was photographed in much the same outfit while visiting his Muslim bro’s, lol. If the headdress fits then so be it, lol.

Everybody should have the sense to flip on drilling when gas goes from $2 to $4 in a year with no relief in site. When will Obama advocate drilling, when gas is so high that most of us have to ride bicyles like the Chinese did 20 years ago? Obama is a fish out of water.

Comment by JozefAL | 2008-07-14 14:01:39

I doubt Obama will ever want more drilling. He’ll probably propose that we build more nuclear plants so that all the oil and gas that power companies use to produce electricity can be freed up for us to put in our cars.
Then, to completely reduce all our oil and gas use, he’ll suggest that the auto makers develop cars that can run on a nuclear fuel cell (using the nuclear plants’ “spent uranium” as the source) so all our American-produced crude can be sold to Japan and China to bring down the national debt.

His parents weren’t in love. His mom was a crazy, underage hippie chick from a well-to-do family. She was conducting an anthropology experiment when she got knocked up by the married Muslim man from Kenya. He was never even there. There was no ditching when Obama was two. And he worships this guy. Didn’t go see his dying mother; he still blames her for making daddy go away. A question from Politico today, as raised by the McCain campaign:

“In today’s New York Times, Barack Obama outlined his Iraq plan. Isn’t this the op-ed he should have written after going to Iraq? If he already has a plan, why is he going to Iraq? These are questions Barack Obama will need to answer. Oh and one other thing, despite his re-write today, when Barack Obama said he opposed the Surge, he said it was because it wouldn’t work and would actually increase violence.”

Comment by blech | 2008-07-14 12:04:41

What a lame press release. McCain’s basically saying that a) Obama should go to Iraq, b) Obama should change his mind c) Obama shouldn’t go to Iraq, d) Obama shouldn’t change his mind.

All at the same time!

Comment by roseeriter | 2008-07-14 12:07:12

If you can’t be pinned down, you can’t be held accountable and you get to claim outcomes after the fact. If you don’t actually vote on something, you can easily claim to have been for or against it all along, with no penalty for the slight of hand.

Belch, McCain gave Obama a gift when he told him he should go to Iraq since he has not been there for two years. If McCain wanted to really damage Obama he would have waited and dumped this on Obama during a debate and embarrased him with millions of people watching Obama stumble around trying to explain his ineptitude.

Comment by Hope Floats | 2008-07-14 14:09:24

Basically, McCain is calling Obama out on his BS. We have heard so many Iraq plans. The 16 month timetable. Then that would be irresponsible. He would meet with JCS and see about getting us out. He would talk with generals on the ground and assess the situation. Then he might have another idea when he returns from Iraq. That made his polls plummet. Headlines for a week said he flip flopped on Iraq. He held two press conferences in a day saying that no one understands him, because they just don’t listen. Then he said that his plan was unchanged, and he’d been saying the same thing all along.

The New Yorker and your cover artist have much courage! More power to you!

The Obama cult has been telling Hillary supporters to lighten up for some time now. They say we are just so uneducated we are unable to recognize satire when we see it. We are humorless, bitter, old, typical white people, headed toward the ash heap of history.

Now the shoe is on the other foot, so Obamabots need to take a chill pill and relax. Don’t the Obama folks recognize a little harmless satire when they see it?

Good description:
The cartoon shows Barack Obama giving a fist bump to Michelle Obama. He is dressed in Arab garb and she looks like Angela Davis with her ‘fro and an AK-47 strapped over her shoulder. Looking over the couple is a smiling portrait of Osama bin Laden. In the fireplace, an American flag is burning.

Just add: with his big ear turned to catch the roal of the crowd, and a sly eye watching for approval of his blackness.

Comment by blech | 2008-07-14 12:16:01

What does “approval of his blackness” mean, by the way?

Comment by Zee | 2008-07-14 12:28:10

It means they LAUGHED HIS ASS out of the “community” when he first came to Chicago and tried to “organize” them. They then told him he might try BEING a part of the community first and that’s why he “found Jesus” — if you can call joining Wright’s political microphone-humping organization “Christian.”

Obama has always been tortured by his identity. As he wrote in his book…although his friends confirmed it was largely fabrication and they didn’t discuss their racial identity.

Barack Obama has more than doubled his lead over John McCain to eight percentage points in the economic battleground state of Michigan, with much of his new support coming from voters who have moved away from the Republican hopeful.

He’s leading in poll averages in MI, OH, PA, CO, NM, IO, and NH — all swing states, more than half of which Bush won in 2004. And McCain isn’t leading in ANY state that Kerry won.

Comment by Lucinda | 2008-07-14 12:14:10

Have you seen the polls today? I’m not a great believer in polls, but I know that some of you are, so I’ll post this.
Newsweek has McCain leading for the first time all summer. (That’s a drop from the 15pt. lead Obama had a few weeks ago in that poll). Here’s a link to the story: http://news.aol.com/elections/story/_a/obamas-lead-has-faded-poll-says/20080714092009990001?icid=100214839×1205582309x1200278639
Rasmussen (sp?) has Obama up to just 2 points. Gallup has him up by just 3 points.

Comment by blech | 2008-07-14 12:15:18

Newsweek doesn’t show McCain leading. It shows Obama with a three point lead.

Comment by Lucinda | 2008-07-14 12:18:12

Well, whoop-de-doo! A 3-point lead. That’s something to write home about.
The story’s point is that Obama dropped from a 15-point lead to a 3-point lead and with the margin of error, McCain could actually be in the lead.

Comment by kellie | 2008-07-14 12:19:49

I like how when he was up by 15 you didn’t believe this poll was real, but now that he’s only up by three you do.

Comment by AnninCa | 2008-07-14 12:45:40

The state polls are always a bit behind the national polls.

Man, McCain is moving up.

It’s telling.

There are still huge numbers in the undecideds.

That reflects my own feelings, for sure.

I haven’t even begun to solidify how I will vote. It’s too far out. I have until November.

I am sure it won’t be Obama. That’s ALL I’m sure about.

I like Cythia McKinney’s platform. I don’t like her.

I like Nader, but he’s so passe’.

I like writing in Hillary, but I haven’t even researched if we can do that in CA.

I like leaving it blank and voting down-ticket.

I haven’t come to any decision. I’m more and more impressed with McCain. He’s not fancy, for sure. But I think the guy is growing on me.

So I don’t know, really.

I just am letting it unfold.

Look at the other diary. There are people there saying that the cover is a plot between Obama and the NYer to get folks on the news saying that these are false smears or to buy the article which they see as insufficiently critical toward Obama.

So I think they’re not sure if they like the cover or not.

Comment by no waffles aka drkate | 2008-07-14 12:23:20

blech. belch. could be a plot, obambi is known for his manipulation. but it won’t get much sympathy, however.

Instead insulting people who disaree with you about Obama why don’t you post why he should be President?

Everything that I have read and dislike about Obama, I read in the NYT, Wash Post, Chicago area newspapers. These represented Obama’s actions and associations, and were in the mainstream media not a political cartoon.

So, while you insult people’s intelligence repeatedly. The fact you don’t know most of the negative information is sourced by the mainstream media. Only reveals it is really YOU who is the moron in the thread…lol.

Now go read up on Obama so you can try and convince us why he is the best choice. Instead of insulting yourself more for knowing so little about him.

Psst…just to let you know.

That political cartoon is poking fun at you too…a supporter who would get so upset over a cartoon and it’s implications. Without realizing the few people who do believe it, would never vote for Obama anyway.

You are upsetting yourself needlessly. It would seem the joke is on you.

I’d say his campaign gamed the system better than it’s ever been done, but then that system sucks. There won’t be any caucuses in the general.

Comment by blech | 2008-07-14 12:22:24

This is the kind of thing I’m talking about — and you can read similar stories in lots and lots of states.

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama is off to a more aggressive campaign in Iowa than John McCain, despite the Republican having clinched the nomination three months earlier than his rival.

Obama has 15 campaign offices open and staffed in Iowa, while McCain is still plotting where to locate about half as many.

Obama’s organizational advantage and the Democrats’ favorable voter registration trend has some national observers taking Iowa off the list of toss-up states.

In the past two presidential elections, few states were determined by narrower margins than Iowa. A difference of 4,000 votes put the state in Democrat Al Gore’s column in 2000 and roughly 10,000 put it in the Republican George Bush’s four years later.

http://www.desmoinesregister.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080714/NEWS09/807140319

McCain’s putting his money in ads, having run three times as many as Obama in the last month. Obama is putting his into field work, which has lots of volunteers as a force multiplier.

Comment by no waffles aka drkate | 2008-07-14 12:26:04

One of the big reasons for whoever is running Obama to do so was to filch the black vote from Hillary, and a bonus was the theory that white people would be loathe to criticize or satirize a black man. Well, think again. And, bleeding-hearts, whine all you want. This fool is not going to give Hillary the actual finger and give it figuratively to all white folk without at least a little sardonic bump back at you.

Comment by Lin | 2008-07-14 12:25:45

The Obama supporters need to lighten up.

I can guarantee you that if Senator Clinton were the current nominee, that the New Yorker would have satirically depicted her as a witch flying around the Oval Office on her broomstick; small children being sacrificed in the blazing fire; the painting above the mantle: Bill in the midst of an orgy-frenzy…dozens of limbs, lips, and butts flailing in all their glory.

Lighten up, Obamabots. The article was more favorable than it should have been and the cover is SATIRE.

Grow the hell up or get out of the game.

Comment by Fenelon spoke | 2008-07-14 12:31:43

then why are you here? A little nervous perhaps?

There is much more damaging information on Obama than a satirical magazine cover. WE don’t need the New Yorker to know that Obama is a liar and a panderer.

This is only July, when the republican attacks haven’t even started. Obama will lose in a landslide by the time the republicans are done with him. Everyone else is going to be too embarassed to vote for someone who lied his way to the nomination.

I personally see Obama’s response as stupid politics.

He should follow Hillary’s footsteps on satire.

We LOVE her pantsuits now. Why?

Because she took the guff and kept marching on. I laugh when I see posts about how the blue was great or she’s shining in yellow.

Hillary took a lemon and made lemonade.

Here is a copy of the email I received in response to my email. I thought some of you might enjoy.

Thank you for writing. We appreciate your comments and, if you have a question, we’ll do our best to respond. However, owing to the volume of correspondence, we cannot reply to every e-mail.
About this week’s issue: Our cover, “The Politics of Fear,” combines a number of fantastical images about the Obamas and shows them for the obvious distortions they are. The burning flag, the nationalist-radical and Islamic
outfits, the fist-bump, the portrait on the wall— all of them echo one attack or another. Satire is part of what we do, and it is meant to bring
things out into the open, to hold up a mirror to prejudice, the hateful, and the absurd. And that’s the spirit of this cover. In this same issue you
will also see that there are two very serious articles on Barack Obama inside—Hendrik Hertzberg’s Comment, (http://www.newyorker.com/talk/comment/2008/07/21/080721taco_talk_hertzberg)
and Ryan Lizza’s 15,000-word reporting piece on the candidate’s political education and rise in Chicago

It takes an IQ well over 100 to understand satire fully – and the New Yorker magazine in any given issue.

I love how the Obots are complaining about the low information voters when they are the ones truly displaying low information responses to the cover!

The Huffy Puffys and the Daily Kozers are absolutely displaying their own IQ challenged paranoia in full force.

Thank you New Yorker for the great “satire”!!!

This is truly a great day in America. The media has finally given it back to Obama and his shrew wife!!!

I love it. The entire left blogosphere reacts with a collective yawn, with most pointing out that the cover is an accurate take on the batshit insane right wing perspective, while the right devotes several million column inches talking to themselves about the uproar. Bwaaaaahaahahahaaa.

Meanwhile, McCain’s campain explodes once again when he throws his top economic advisor under the bus for calling Americans a bunch of whiners. Then his most visible surrogate, Ms. Carly Fiorina, goes on national television and tells the world that they should not be listening to campaign surrogates.

Yeah, that’s a well oiled machine Mr. McGoo has put together there. But I think he should start wearing his glasses because it looks like he oiled his machine with Crazy Glue.

Comment by Elspeth | 2008-07-14 12:41:47

Forget the cover: READ THE ARTICLE.

I read the whole, long article and was blown away by the thoroughness of the coverage. The upshot is:

*Obama is an old style politician. (He is NOT a new type of politician).

*Obama is an opportunist who uses people to get to a certain point and then drops them, even if these people are friends or the public that elected him.

*Obama adopts principles to win elections: then he drops them.

There is so much in the article: research, evidence, interviews. Well done, well documented, and far more interesting than the rather shallow and obvious cover art.

Comment by blech | 2008-07-14 12:50:28

The article shows that Obama is an experienced legislator who knows how to get things done, certainly not the naif NQ portrays him to be.

Comment by no waffles aka drkate | 2008-07-14 12:57:04

you haven’t read the article, idiot. It is not flattering for obama, and betrays him as the same old political hack that he always was.

Comment by blech | 2008-07-14 13:03:07

Unlike Clinton or McCain? Of course not.

I’m pleased that the nominee is not portrayed as anything else than a politician. That’s what he is and that’s what he needs to be in order to effectively govern. And, you know what, none of this is a surprise to the American people. They expect politicians to act like politicians.

And don’t come back with the “you thought he was a messiah” line. I didn’t and neither did anyone else. That’s just spin from folks who don’t like Obama.

Comment by Karma | 2008-07-14 13:08:41

Its satire all right, but with a large heaping dose of truth.

Obama comes real close to being some of 3rd world miscreant with a unlimited appetite for power. Much like Mugabe.

Michelle would be right at home with the Black Panthers or any other black supremacist group that likes to whack white people. Or copying Winnie Mandela’s tire burning parties.

Neither cares for the country or its people. In fact Obama can’t even say once decent thing about the country without pimp slapping it in the next sentence.

I was laughing when I saw on the news that people were upset, and that the artist stands by his work as satire. All I could think of was the bots eating crow.

They made fun of us because we took Bernie’s comments seriously (in the sense that it shouldn’t have been said at a Presidential fundraiser and that Obama did nothing – yet wanted Imus fired).

Oh, it’s ok to degrade the entire women race and laugh and say “just messin with you”; but it’s treasonous to speak out against Holy Obama.

Comment by SEC | 2008-07-14 12:52:35

I’m an Obama supporter, and, for the record, I didn’t have a problem with the cover. In fact, I think this is one of those things that can actually help Obama. It is clear that every element in the cover is satire – even the fist bump as some sort of “terrorist greeting” as some people were prone to say.

I do not believe that the Obamas are being satirized; instead, it is the perception of many, many people (including some who spend time here) who truly believe that Senator or Mrs. Obama are either anti-American or an Arab/terrorist sympathizer in an American’s clothing. Those are the people that this magazine cover is poking fun at, and revealing to be completely illogical.

Comment by ebonyscrews | 2008-07-14 13:01:37

Ask Barky and Michelle if this cover helps their cause out at all. You’d receive a resounding “NO” on that one. I believe the cartoon is intentionally provocative and to such a dramatic extreme simply for sensationalism and to sell magazines. I hope the o-bots blow a major gasket over this one so everyone could see more of how completely unhinged they are.

Comment by xax | 2008-07-14 13:00:16

I’m confused. They say that they did it out of satire, about how the right is portraying him, but the problem is that no one on the right is doing that. Sure you have a few out there (you said 10%) that will not like him based on his race and perceived religion, but that hardly constitutes the entire population that are Republican or conservative.
The larger issue here is that the reason a lot of people have taken offense to what was suppose to be a stab at racial/religious discrimination by the New Yorker, is because MANY Americans simply DO NOT have such a huge problem with race or Muslims as the media wants people to think.
Chances are if they don’t like Obama, maybe, just maybe, they don’t like him. See the race baiting is starting to backfire on these so called “progressives”.

And here’s who McCain has as one of his major advisers.

Scheunemann was a core participant in the lobbying, plotting and organized campaigns of deception that led America to war in Iraq. He was a close collaborator with Ahmad Chalabi through the 1990s. He helped draft the Iraq Liberation Act, which created the new funding stream for Chalabi’s Iraqi National Congress. At the start of the Bush administration he signed on as Don Rumsfeld’s ‘consultant’ on Iraq at the Pentagon. And then when the administration started cranking up the machinery for the propaganda campaign in favor of war he went back on the outside to form and lead the Committee for the Liberation of Iraq, to lead the press and lobbying campaign to make sure the war got started on schedule.

Remember, US intelligence later found evidence that Chalabi, in addition to foisting a bunch of bogus intelligence and lying informers on the US and pocketing a lot of US taxpayer dollars, had provided highly classified US intelligence to Iran. Scheunemann worked closely with Chalabi for years in his efforts to get the US into war with Iraq. He was also a go-between between Chalabi and McCain. Now that he’s taking such a high-profile role on the Iraq issue in the 2008, Scheunemann’s history with Chalabi and the use of bogus intelligence to get the nation into war is unquestionably highly newsworthy.

Comment by Seattle Moss | 2008-07-14 13:07:17

Here is the post from a scared out of his wits Obama supporter who is tying to rationalize the New Yorker cover as satire and blaming us here at NQ as being racist……

I think the New Yorker meant this to be funny, a satirical look at the way the right and/or Larry Johnson have painted the Obamas. But the fact is that this image, absent context, is abysmal. And while I think most New Yorker readers will get the joke, most people seeing the image will not.

That doesn’t mean, as Andrew Sullivan suggests, that I believe Americans are too dumb to figure out satire. They aren’t, save for the ratfuckers at No Quarter. (More on them in a minute.) But the image sits on the cover of the New Yorker with not a word for context, not a single symbol indicating that it is anything but in earnest. Only it’s over-the-top characterization and its reputation as a moderate-left magazine are there to tell us that it isn’t meant as serious commentary.

And of course, that’s the problem. Had this image appeared in The Onion, everyone would have got the joke immediately. Had it appeared as artwork for the story, it would be easy to see that it was meant to lampoon. Indeed, had it even borne a title, it might have been clearly identified as such.

But it did none of those, and instead, as Jake Tapper notes, “It’s a recruitment poster for the right-wing.”

As if on cue, the faux-Democrats and racists at No Quarter are cheering the image. Commenter Seattle Moss says, “We all have been talking at length about everything in that picture. Now the picture can speak a thousand words for us.” Commenter WildChild adds, “That picture says it all. LOL and there’s no pulling it back now.” And a commenter truly concerned about misogyny, Michelle “Ho” Obama, says, “An African-American woman who is a radical aligned with a Muslim: this seems accurate. This also explains the palpable rage of Michelle Obama and the violence of the cult that follows her and her husband.”

And that’s just No Quarter, home of the Clinton “Democrats.” I don’t have the will to see what Little Green Footballs or Free Republic is saying.

So yeah, I don’t think that the troglodytes are going to see this as satire. I think they’re going to see it as confirming what they’ve always known — that Barack Obama’s a secret Muslim, that Michelle Obama’s a secret Black Panther, that Osama bin Laden will be conducting state visits, all with the American flag burning in the fireplace. And worst of all, a scary black man is going to be in charge of us white folk. It’s going to be a long four months.

Here is my response to Jeff on his blog
Seattle Moss Says:

Jeff
You might want to publish my complete post!

‘Caricature’s have a habit of becoming the real deal in a country so obsessed with visuals.
We all have been talking at length about everything in that picture.
Now the picture can speak a thousand words for us.’

Why does Obama hate America?
Why didn’t Obama stand and cheer the surge and our troops success at the state of the union?
Why does Obama and his minions wish defeat and retreat from Iraq?
I have been a hard core democrat for 24 years but after the totalitarian socialist tactics done by the democrats this year in order to get the fixed selection I’m going elsewhere.

Looks like your an Anti-American who follows the polls and not what’s best for the United States.
If we had listened to Obama last year America today would be a defeated beaten Country humiliated in the eyes of the world.
If we had listened to Obama the Iraqi’s would be committing genocide against each other and the US would have lost our strategic position in the middle east and the world.
If we had listened to Obama Iran would be gaining influence and hegemony over the region while we were busy cutting and running.
McCain through his steadfastness has prevented America from being defeated for all time and have allowed the Iraqi’s a chance to have democracy in their country.
The western worlds vital interests are protected by having Israel and Iraq uniquely allied with the United States
McCain is a hero!!!
Obama is a fool and opportunist who would jeopardize our troops so that he could get elected.

Again I ask YOU the questions.

Why did obama wish for defeat in Iraq?
Why did obama not stand and cheer the success of our troops and the surge at the SOU address?
Why doesn’t Obama care enough about victory for America in Iraq to not even visit the war zone for the past 900 days?

Absolute idiots most of them are because they haven’t scratched beneath the surface to find out why they used that cover. Just rabble, rabble, rabble, rabble, rabble rabble, rabble. They (Obamatrons) are the “low-information” voters.

Comment by Buzz Latte | 2008-07-14 13:12:24

Don’t deny it Blech, the left is screaming in pain at being satirized. The problem with satire is that it is based in truths.

Truths the Obots don’t want brought to light. Why is Obama and Michelle satirized in such a manner? They brought it on themselves by the decisions and associates they choose to string along with them. The point being, no matter what the editorial comment by the New Yorker, is do they represent America?

FREEDOM OF SPEECH, BABY!

And your left wing guru just voted to spy on you some more? Now, who is really for freedom of speech?

Comment by blech | 2008-07-14 13:23:22

This cover may be a way to open up the discussion about Obama’s ties to radicals and extremists, a subject that the main stream media has steered clear of.

Political Satire is an effective way to speak the unspeakable and if anyone complains all you have to say is “just messin’ with ya, man!”.

Comment by yttik | 2008-07-14 13:12:40

This cover is sacrilege, sacrilege I tell ya, against The Chosen One. Those people must be sent to re-education camp immediately, LOL.

You know, Hillary is an expert at dealing with “satire” and smears. She would take a cover like this and use it to her advantage. Remember how she quipped about being late for the show because she was busy dodging sniper fire?

Unfortunately Obama is an arrogant, self absorbed tool with no sense of humor about himself. By the time he’s finished, he will have legitamized this satire and given it real power, just like he did with those photos of humself in native garb.

This is politics. It might be ugly, but people much greater then Obama had to wade thru it. I’ll never forget Max Cleland, Tammy Duckworth, even McCain, all of whom served their country and still had to deal with attacks about their patriotism. Heck, Hillary has made a career out of dealing with it.

Comment by blech | 2008-07-14 13:16:05

Hillary didn’t make that quip about sniper fire until weeks went by when she kept reiterating her false story, then grudgingly admitted it and then tried not to talk about it. Hardly as smooth as you portray it.

But then again, we know that NQ is known for making things up.

Comment by destardi | 2008-07-14 13:24:53

Wow. People like yourself are just plain non-thinkers.

1)Hillary was in a reinforced COMBAT HELICOPTER, wearing a FLAK JACKET, while the copter was flying a ZIGZAG patter (evasive maneuver), with the roar of the blades in her ears, and the closer they got to the tarmac, the soldiers ushered her closer into the reinforced cockpit

Did Hillary have combat training? How would a civilian normally respond to this? With adrenaline? With excitement, and not necessarily the good kind?

It was one memory from how many years ago?

2)Obama attended church for 20 years…is he stupid enough to not know what his “close spiritual advisor and friend who married him and michelle, and whom baptized his kids” was all about?

Let’s see…one 12 year old memory, or 20 years of weekly visits..as recent as one month before he through his jerk of a pastor under the bus.

YOU ARE STUPID OBAMA SUPPORTERS!

Not that it matters – but the ones who had private consultation with Rev. Wright were the Clintons during their Monica difficulties.

Comment by Blu | 2008-07-14 13:33:49

According to the New Yorker article, Toni Preckwinkle …

“suggested that Obama joined Jeremiah Wright’s Trinity United Church of Christ for political reasons. “It’s a church that would provide you with lots of social connections and prominent parishioners,” she said. “It’s a good place for a politician to be a member.”…”

Obama seems to have been meticulous about constructing a political identity for himself. He visited churches on the South Side, considered the politics and reputations of each one, and received advice from older pastors. Before deciding on Trinity United Church of Christ, he asked the Reverend Wright about critics who complained that the church was too “upwardly mobile,” a place for buppies.

I don’t see any mention in the article about how often he attended the church.
He is not a Christian, he just used the church to construct his political identity.

Have you ever heard that phrase in the context of Rev. Wright’s entire sermon? My guess is that you haven’t, and that you probably wouldn’t want to–because it would change your understanding of what Wright was saying. Wright wasn’t cursing America. He was warning his congregation about the view the biblical God might take of some of the evil things done by evil men in the name of America.

I don’t support Wright, or his fire-and-brimstone interpretation of scripture. The forcefulness of his message is not for the timid, and his black orientation is not for me. But the out-of-context media bytes displayed to America do not tell us who Wright actually is. The way they were edited and presented is actually a lie, that was concocted and used as a political weapon of attack.
It’s a lie that Barack Obama and Michelle Obama don’t love their country. One of many lies. You’re entitled to believe whatever you wish, of course, and you’re entitled to try to convince as many people as you can of whatever you choose to believe. I certainly won’t disrespect you for that. I tend to reserve my disrespect for those who lie knowingly. There are plenty of people out there who do exactly that.

“Woe unto the people who choose a child for a King…” Talmud

What people are stupid enough to CHOOSE a child for a king?

So the Talmud defines a “child” as “someone who changes his mind often, whimsically or willfully.”

Woe unto America if the “child” is chosen in November!

~ Taken from a comment by “elixelx” at another site.

Comment by blech | 2008-07-14 13:27:25

That isn’t from the Talmud, as anyone who has studied Talmud would know.

Comment by txchelle | 2008-07-14 13:54:35

I don’t know what the actual source of the “quote” is. Perhaps it’s a summary by the author of the comment. I believe his/her point was that Obama is a child who changes his mind often. Either way, thank you for the clarification, I wouldn’t intentionally misquote the Talmud.

His wife is deinately a HATER, and yes, a MILITANT HATER. Lewis Farrakhan said “Obama is the hope of the world”. Now anyone in their right mind knows damned well that a radical Islamic like Farrakhan would never in his life say that a christian–ANY CHRISTIAN– “IS THE HOPE OF THE WORLD”!!! Obama is of the same stock Farrakhan is, a radical MUSLIM who uses Marxist communist tactics to achieve his political goals. It’s about time the world begins to recognize what Obama is all about and Howard Dean is his associate.

Comment by Gary McGowan | 2008-07-14 13:26:03

Our world is going to look shockingly different to us in the upcoming few coming months. At the Denver convention a puffed-up, pasty faced, slick “unity/compromise candidate” is sitting in the wings.

THE WAY TO STOP THIS is for the lower 80% of income earners, especially, to stop hoping and wishing that “something” will halt the ongoing destruction of our nation–the destruction you can see all around you if you just look and admit it… Look at the cities of Cleveland, Detroit, Western PA, and many, many others, compare to what they were only 20-30 years ago. Basic utilities, medical care, education… fuel and food prices… Look at the millions of mortgage foreclosures, bank bankruptcies, and bailouts of the speculators with taxpayer money.

Now we are facing a systemic financial collapse worldwide. We are IN hyperinflation. Leaders of many nations other than the USA are well aware of this, and ready to undertake the reorganization of the literally bankrupt system and create new co-operative commitments to cure the problem. The United States must find and support responsible, sane leaders (like Hillary Clinton) who will take on leadership in this task.

If the “common people,” “the forgotten man and woman” stand up and DEMAND change based on basic Constitutional principles AT EVERY OPPORTUNITY, we can succeed in turning this horror around and be proud we were part of having done so when we look our children and our grandchildren in the eyes.

The urgent need now is to broaden our strategic perspective (e.g. reduce energy and time spent gloating over Obama’s being thrown under the bus by our real enemies) and recruit more people into doing so, and becoming politically ACTIVE.

Comment by Dawnelle | 2008-07-14 14:01:21

Axelrod announcement this afternoon:

Obama is going to sue the New Yorker for taking a private commissioned portrait done in the bedroom at the Tony Rezko funded Chicago residence of the Obama’s and publishing it!

Axelrod’s statement concluded with this final note: “To expose the real private lives and enjoyments of the Obama’s while in the confines of their own bedroom, is breaking from the message of the Obama campaign of Hope and Change and the Obama’s home pleasures should not be characterized in such a way as to place reality over the message of Hope and Change Obama wants the American people to grasp hold of and believe in, in any way!”

I just read some of the KOSsack comments, too funny, some even say The New Yorker should be sued for LIBEL, ROFLMAO.

Meanwhile :
Barack Obama, you did smoke crack cocaine in a limo and my hotel room in Gurnee, IL on 11-6 & 7-99, Barack Obama, you did engage in sexual activity with me in a limo and hotel room in Gurnee, IL on 11-6 & 7-99. Barack Obama, you did have Donald Young call me and fish for information as to whom I had told of these matters. Barack Obama, you were intimately and sexually involved with Donald Young for years before Mr. Young was MURDERED in December 2007.

Nothing that the Obama for America campaign or the Obama supporters/surrogates do or say will change the fact that the above statements are true and factual. Nothing that is thrown at me will change the fact that the above statements are true and factual.

Barack Obama will be held accountable for every act that has been taken against a US Citizen who is telling the truth.
REF: http://larrysinclair0926.com/

Now speaking of LIBEL, why is Obambi so afraid to touch the claims made above, yet they go out of their way to speak to The New Yorker article, strange indeed.

Comment by Jeremiah God Damn AmeriKKKa Wright | 2008-07-14 13:57:15

Because the New yorker Cover is exactly the type of distraction that plays into their hands, allows them to avoid talking about things that matter and instead whine and cry and say “see see american is full of racists who are afraid of a black man.”

The Larry sinclair issue just opens up a can of worms that they don’t want to touch. They gain nothing and can potentially lose everything by touching it.

Comment by Dave_Not_For_Obama | 2008-07-14 14:11:22

The Larry sinclair issue just opens up a can of worms that they don’t want to touch. They gain nothing and can potentially lose everything by touching it.

To my way of thinking there are only so many scenarios to the claims.

1)The claims are 100% accurate
2)The claims are 100% inaccurate
3)The claims are partially accurate
4)Defending the claims opens up an area related to something Obambi is hiding.

I obviously was not there, so I can’t lay claim to the facts, but something is really odd in the way the Obambi camp is not responding, much in the same way they won’t produce an ACTUAL paper birth certificate. Doing so in either case (Sinclair claims/birth cert)leaves the impression that something is not on the up and up.

I have to wonder if and or when we ever learn the truth.

We all know that if the media wasn’t so biased since day 1, obama would have been laughed off the stage ages ago. He’s a media creation, and they have to held accountable for this shit.
