Maliki Disputes Report That He Endorses Obama’s Withdrawal Plan

Characteristic of Obama’s ability to stick his basketball shoes in his mouth without even trying,  Iraq PM Maliki’s “Endorsement” of Obama’s Iraq 16-month Magical Arbitrary Hopey Changey Troop Withdrawal Plan was reported by the German newspaper Der Spiegel - and subsequently brought to us by a Chicago Tribune correspondent:

Maliki Backs Obama Troop Pullout Plan

BAGHDAD—Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki threw his support behind Barack Obama’s troop withdrawal plan in an interview published Saturday, ahead of an expected visit by the Illinois senator to a significantly calmer Baghdad than the one he last encountered two years ago.

“U.S. presidential candidate Barack Obama talks about 16 months,” Maliki told the German news weekly Der Spiegel, referring to the plan the Democratic hopeful outlined last week to bring U.S. troops home over a 16-month period starting next year.

“That, we think, would be the right time frame for a withdrawal, with the possibility of slight changes,” Maliki said.

That the prime minister is publicly endorsing Obama’s Iraq proposals may make it difficult for Republican presidential contender John McCain to continue to justify his support for a more open-ended commitment.

Cool huh? Why, Magical Barky Obama is a hit!

He’s taking Iraq by storm, dribbling his basketball-sized ego everywhere!!

Dribble Dribble! The man is a genius! A dynamo!

A Real Foreign Policy Expert Already! In the Accelerated program. One day here, one day there, a Foreign Policy Expert is made! He’s so good at skipping experience steps isn’t he? A day is YEARs when it comes to our own Barack Obama. It’s the Barack Obama Advanced Placement Program!

He’s so advanced he devised his plan before even visiting the place! I mean how Advanced is that?

Maliki loves him! Maliki agrees with him! Everybody should agree with him! He’s Barack Obama!

Ooops. One problem. Reported by CNN, no less! Somebody alert the media! Oh wait! They ARE the media. It’s just sometimes hard to tell.

CNN: Iraq PM Disputes Report On Withdrawal Plan

But a spokesman for al-Maliki said his remarks “were misunderstood, mistranslated and not conveyed accurately.”

Government spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh said the possibility of troop withdrawal was based on the continuance of security improvements, echoing statements that the White House made Friday after a meeting between al-Maliki and U.S. President Bush.

The two men “agreed that the goals would be based on continued improving conditions on the ground and not an arbitrary date for withdrawal,” the White House said.

In the magazine interview, Al-Maliki said his remarks did not indicate that he was endorsing Obama over presumptive Republican presidential nominee Sen. John McCain.

Somebody give Barack Obama a basketball right now please. While he is visiting other countries, particulary ones at war, it is so much safer for American Foreign Relations to keep him busy playing ball and gyrating for the girls as much as possible.

We’re not in Chicago anymore, Toto. This kind of eager gaffe between Obama and his Media Pimps can dramatically affect relationships.

Uppity Woman — So the Ugly American strikes again. I guess this propaganda works. My husband called me to say Maliki agrees with Obama on his timetable.

Uppity Woman states, “So the Ugly American strikes again?”

More like “Barky” meets “Sparky” from National Lampoon’s Arabian Vacation.

For anyone not familiar with the series, this is the sequel to National Lampoon’s European Vacation.

Please, he is Chevy Chase with a tan, but at least Chevy Chase was funny. This clown is frakking SCARY.

Comment by elizabeth | 2008-07-21 02:04:30

Wrong again…Maliki backtracked ONLY after receiving calls from US Embassy and Washington…Malaki’s backtracking came via CENTCOM - duh!! The NY TImes has a copy of the original interview and stands by the translation - as does the magazine, Der Speigel, in which the interview appeared.
so…this was obviously something cooked up by the white house when whath Maliki REALLY said was released.

Comment by Hope Floats | 2008-07-21 12:41:51

Maliki is famous for retracting statements after claiming he was misquoted. He is a diplomat mouth piece for the real power in Iraq, and his life at the moment is dependent upon US troop presences in the region. He’ll say whatever we tell him to say.

So, after his initial statement, which was never an explicit endorsement, he “refined hi position” when he got a call from the White House. He and Bush had a nice talk and stuck to improved ground conditions v. an arbitrary date for withdrawal.

Tool,

If you hadn’t gone for Uppity I would have completely ignored your borderline insane drivel.

1. Please show quote and source for where Barky “is doing so well”. I am an English Professor and even I cannot twist any of that into “doing so well”

2. I will give a a very brief lesson on Mid-East Politics. Al Malki has ZERO/NADA power. He is “allowed” his position first by Al Sistani - the Grand Ayotollah, and then by Al Talabani - the Kurd who has the REAL power in Iraq. Those two guys simply have better things to do than talk w/Bush people so al Malaki gets to give himself a title while he suffers through the B/S.

Just go back over news reports for the last year, and see who is giving final authorization on oil, trade deals, and currency issues.

Lastly, because shallow idiots like you bore me to death - go and buy a book or two on Mid-East politics. OR forward me $100/hr in advance through Susan.

So al Malaki, like his counterpart part in Iran, the Powerless Ahmeddinajab (sp?) runs his mouth and you somehow interpet this as “doing well”? Un”Fnn”believeable!

So other than Obalhblah shooting off his mouth in a video, which of course simply feeds his loathsome NARCISSISM - WHO with any prestige or moral authority says that BARKY is right and doing well?

Uppity and I are waiting for an answer!

Comment by StrawberrybitesBarky | 2008-07-20 18:45:08

Nice. See this is where both extreme sides of the political spectrum piss me off. Anyone who’s taken just one Middle Eastern history class knows that Iraq is going to be a mess for years to come and election year politics make shit so much worse. US politicians are busy trying to score tough guy points while everyday Iraqis are just trying to survive. Meanwhile local strong men are busy jockeying for power and ’shut up until after the election’ dollars. We have no idea want we are planting over there and what we will reap. Hell, we’re still dealing with blowback from the first time we dicked around in Afghanistan.

Comment by Nellie | 2008-07-20 20:42:45

Strawberry,

I agree with you completly. There are many many levels to Mid East Politics.

My points to the troll Tool were why does he even bother with anything al Maliki says - the guy simply does not matter.

What I said is from 20 years experience. Never did take a course in Mid East history - Lawrence of Arabia was the closest I got until Bush I started given them student Visas (I-9’s) as if they were penny candy. With our states very strict In Locus Patentis laws, I certainly learned a lot from them. Hell, I even had some of them living in my house.

Link to it yourself, dickless. Christ. Obama is a loser, get over it. The Germans are masters of propaganda, they’ll see barky for exactly what he is. And even though they try very hard to tap down on hate speech, they still have very racist roots. When my husband did back fill for Bosnia, he was an MP. He was stationed in Germany. Patrick Henry Village. Some Muslim kid, robbed a local store and fled to the base to escape the German police. My husband found the kid in a tree but he had no jurisdiction over him. He had to let the German police get him down. The Germans got him down alright, they escorted him off the base and nearly beat him to death. Hubby filed a complaint but nothing ever came of it. I highly doubt the Germans will embrace barky. I lived there for a time and still have family there. They are not known for their love of people of colour.

Comment by Ted | 2008-07-20 18:50:34

At a very minimum, somehow blaming Obama for the mistranslation (if indeed it occurred) is a bit of s stretch. (”Characteristic of Obama’s ability to stick his basketball shoes in his mouth without even trying”) How n earth was he involved with the interview of al-Maliki by a German writer?

And I would put more faith in what al-Maliki said in that interview than what he said to the Bush admin, at which time he was no doubt put under pressure to comply with their thinking.

Comment by Hope Floats | 2008-07-20 19:16:58

Therefore, it doesn’t matter what Maliki says since he doesn’t make decisions, and he folds under pressure. The President still makes the decisions on our end when dealing with their government, not the presumptive nominee of the Democratic party who is desperately trying to promote his unrealistic 16 month withdrawal campaign promises.

News that Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki supports Barack Obama’s troop withdrawal plan was hailed by Congress’ top Democrat, Nancy Pelosi, as evidence of deep flaws and inconsistencies in President Bush and John McCain’s policies for Iraq.

“[Bush], McCain, and others have always talked about respecting the will of this sovereign government in Iraq,” said the Speaker. “They have said that when it is secure on the ground we can leave, and they claim it is [secure]. So I think that with all the indications in terms of the will of the government and the security that they are claiming on the ground, it would follow that the time has come for us to go. It is long overdue.”

In a wide-ranging interview with the Huffington Post, Pelosi threw sharp jabs at both the outgoing president and the presumptive Republican nominee. Asked whether Maliki’s remarks - in which he explicitly favored Obama’s approach to US-Iraq relations - had removed the philosophical basis for McCain’s war policy, she responded: “I have never seen any basis for a policy to go into Iraq.”

“It doesn’t make any sense,” she continued. “‘Why aren’t you happy that we have a secure situation on the ground,’ they say. And yet we can’t go home.”

Pelosi also offered harsh words for the president’s personal conduct. Asked for her reaction to Bush’s declaration that he had given up golf out of respect for U.S. soldiers, the Speaker proclaimed herself at a loss for words.

OK tool. Here is the CNN version. As someone said not too long ago, the discussion with foreign governments, especially Middle Eastern countries, is nuanced and subtle. That is why it is a good policy to keep your mouth shut when quoting leaders of other countries unless you have something else to back it up. He had not even spoken with Maliki when that article was posted.Really stupid. Now, if you want the transcript posted here, go for it. This is still one of the few remaining truly democratic blogs on the Internet.

(CNN) — A German magazine quoted Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki as saying that he backed a proposal by presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama to withdraw U.S. troops from Iraq within 16 months.

Nuri al-Maliki told Der Spiegel that he favors a “limited” tenure for coalition troops in Iraq.

“U.S. presidential candidate Barack Obama talks about 16 months,” he said in an interview with Der Spiegel that was released Saturday.

“That, we think, would be the right time frame for a withdrawal, with the possibility of slight changes,” he said.

In the magazine interview, Al-Maliki said his remarks did not indicate that he was endorsing Obama over presumptive Republican presidential nominee Sen. John McCain.

“Who they choose as their president is the Americans’ business. But it’s the business of Iraqis to say what they want. And that’s where the people and the government are in general agreement: The tenure of the coalition troops in Iraq should be limited,” he said.

“Those who operate on the premise of short time periods in Iraq today are being more realistic,” al-Maliki said.

The interview’s publication came one day after the White House said President Bush and al-Maliki had agreed to include a “general time horizon” in talks about reducing American combat forces and transferring Iraqi security control across the country. iReport.com: What should the next president know about Iraq?

The Bush administration has steadfastly refused to consider a “timetable” for withdrawing troops from Iraq.

In a statement issued Friday after a conversation between Bush and al-Maliki by closed-circuit television, the White House said that conditions in Iraq would dictate the pace of the negotiations and not “an arbitrary date for withdrawal.”

The two men “agreed that the goals would be based on continued improving conditions on the ground and not an arbitrary date for withdrawal,” the White House said.

In an interview to air Sunday on “Late Edition,” Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer that “those goals are being achieved now, as we speak. And so, it’s not at all unusual to start to think that there is a horizon out there, in the not too distant future, in which the roles and responsibilities of the U.S. forces are going to change dramatically and those of the Iraqi forces are going to become dominant.”

White House spokesman Scott Stanzel said al-Maliki had made it clear that such decisions will be based on continuing positive developments.

“It is our shared view that should the recent security gains continue, we will be able to meet our joint aspirational time horizons,” he said.

The prime minister’s remarks emerged as Obama visited Kuwait and Afghanistan before embarking on a tour of the Middle East and Europe to boost his foreign policy credentials. He also plans to visit Iraq.

The Democratic candidate says he supports a phased withdrawal of troops, promising to remove all combat brigades from Iraq within 16 months of taking office if he becomes president.

McCain does not think American troops should return to the United States until Iraqi forces are capable of maintaining a safe, democratic state.

He has been a strong advocate of the 2007 “surge” to escalate U.S. troop levels and says troops should stay in Iraq as long as needed.

McCain says Obama is wrong for opposing the increased troop presence, and Obama says McCain’s judgment is flawed.

I think we should view any Obama/Maliki 16 month troop reduction
with Great Suspicion!
Maliki leans towards Iran. If given a chance the Iranians along with a complicit Maliki would align themselves together against the United States.
That is exactly what we don’t want to happen!
Obama through his naiveness is already taking the bait from Maliki for unilateral surrender.
Obama by showing his hand repeatedly on the 16 month plan for retreat has given our enemies a timetable for victory against America.
All the Iranians have to do is wait another 16 months to control and influence Iraq. We may even see terrorists elected into the Government such as Hezbolah which will complete Osama’s strategy of politically controlling a Sovereign state such as Iraq.

Benchmarks and progress depends on conditions on the ground. Gen Patreous makes the decision on troop reductions based on sustainable security.
Maliki wants us out because he is a shiite who looks to Iran to complete a greater hegemony over the region
Obama if elected will give up Iraq and allow Iran to take control of it.

Comment by imustprotest | 2008-07-20 17:42:05

Maliki and his buds lived in Iran right?

Comment by Seattle Moss | 2008-07-20 17:52:55

Maliki was sentenced to death under Saddam and lived for some time in Iran.
Maliki if he could would commit genocide against the Sunni’s and we saw that with the death squads.
America and the Sunni’s aligning themselves in An-Albar put a stop to that plan.
Under Obama/Maliki the Sunni’s are out and the Iranians are in control.
The United States will have also lost it’s influence.

Comment by imustprotest | 2008-07-20 18:34:50

That’s true Obama’s victory guarantees a larger Iranian crescent. A McCain victory would guarantee a more balanced government between sunni and shia influences.

We all remember in PA, nothing short of 10 pts. would be considered “crushing.” In NV, Obama leads by 2 pts. In NH, they’re tied. In CO, Obama leads by 3 pts. In VA, they’re tied. In FL, McCain leads by 3 pts. In MO, McCain leads by 3 pts.

I suppose you are trying to make us cry. Well, millions of people go see KISS or Aerosmith or Jay Z, but NO ONE wants either of them to be president.
The fact is McCain was right. Maliki confirms this.
We will remove troops as quickly as possible, but only by listening to conditions on the ground not Barry’s artificial 16 month timetable.
But you guys can choose to ignore the reality if you want. You’re good at that. Cause after all, nothing in the world actually happens unless you BELIEVE it can happen. Right?

Comment by Hope Floats | 2008-07-21 13:02:17

Hilary had plans for meeting the benchmarks and had the foreign policy chops and working knowledge of our military to be able to back that up. Obama just co-opted the 16-month timetable after Hillary made it sound plausible. Then he called Hillary “Bush-Cheney Lite” based on “her vote for the Iraq war” (lie: she voted to authorize the President to dispatch peace-keeping troops to accompany the UN weapons inspectors, and he betrayed that trust and lied. Deja vu.)

Now let’s move on to your pussy’s lead. Let’s see, hmmmm. George McGovern himself had a 17 point lead at this point in the election. Mike Dukakis had a 15 point lead at this time. Shall we get into Kerry’s lead?

But don’t let these things concern you. Have some cheetos.

German citizens cannot legally vote in the American election. Of course with the way Obama runs his campaign . . .

Is Obama going to get a popular band, or maybe David Hasselhoff, to give a free concert for him in Germany like he got the Decemberists to do in Portland? This makes it look like everyone came to see him when in fact they came out for a free concert?

What is that tune Decemberists start their concerts with? Oh, yes, the Soviet National Anthem. Did Obama put his hand over his heart for that Anthem?

Obama has talked a lot about the importance of moving away from electocracy,” she says, trying to move on to more comfortable territory, and suggesting that the way people actually live is more important than the “reification of elections”.

“In terms of how radical the shift will be, I think it’s very hard. There’s going to be a huge foreign service and civil service that he will inherit, senators and congressmen who have already been elected. So I think he is one guy, trying to steer this ship of cacophonous agendas into a new place.”

Jake Tapper on Obama’s careless use of words:

http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2008/07/barack-obamas-b.html#comments

Today on CBS’s Face the Nation, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., in Afghanistan, told the paparazzi-pursued correspondent Lara Logan that “the objective of this trip was to have substantive discussions with people like President Karzai or Prime Minister Maliki or President Sarkozy or others who I expect to be dealing with over the next eight to 10 years.

The notion that Obama will be dealing with world leaders for eight-to-ten years, possibly up through July 2018, suggests that either (a) he believes that not only will he be elected and re-elected, but the 22nd amendment will be repealed and he will be elected for a third term, OR (b) he was speaking casually and just meant two terms.

Here’s the problem with inexperience:

Some Democratic allies of Obama’s are — off the record — concerned that the senator too often doesn’t consider the potential butterfly effect of his diction.

Take his support for an “undivided Jerusalem,” or his remarks about women seeking abortions when they’re “feeling blue,” which upset feminist leaders.

Or the media kerfuffle after his “refine my policies” presser.

On his press plane on July 5, after that incident, Obama said, “I’m surprised at how finely calibrated every single word was measured.”

A reporter noted that that is precisely what happens with the president, he can change world affairs with one word, finely calibrating your words is what happens.

Another George Bush?

Barack Obama, D-Ill., in Afghanistan, told the paparazzi-pursued correspondent Lara Logan that “the objective of this trip was to have substantive discussions with people like President Karzai or Prime Minister Maliki or President Sarkozy or others who I expect to be dealing with over the next eight to 10 years.

“And it’s important for me to have a relationship with them early, that I start listening to them now, getting a sense of what their interests and concerns are.”

The notion that Obama will be dealing with world leaders for eighjt-to-ten years, possibly up through July 2018, suggests that either (a) he believes that not only will he be elected and re-elected, but the 22nd amendment will be repealed and he will be elected for a third term, OR (b) he was speaking casually and just meant two terms.

(I’m guessing b.)

OK so what is the NoQuarter genius plan for ending the war? Is there something wrong with setting a 16-month goal, and working toward that? Does John McCain’s plan of permanent bases and a permanent committment sound like a good thing for America? Do you think the Iraqis like that idea?

Do you honestly think Maliki can promise one candidate or the other anything — he has to please Americans AND the Iraqi public, of COURSE he’s going to backtrack. The Chicago Tribune was wrong to say Maliki “endorsed” the Obama plan. But every poll of Iraqis and every statement from Iraqi politicians says they want us there for only 1-2 more years, maximum. Doesn’t that sound a lot like sixteen months to you?

You people are so pissed about Obama winning and Hillary losing you’re disputing things every Democrat has agreed on for two the three years at least.

Thanks, and have fun doing the GOP’s dirty work!

Comment by candymarl | 2008-07-20 18:32:27

No, we just don’t want Obama. Every Democrat has not agreed on everything in the last 2-3 years.

We did all agree Bush should be impeached. When the Dems got the majority and Pelosi became Speaker what did she do? Take Impeachment off of the table.

We’re not lemmings. We’re American citizens. Unless you personally know every Democrat in this country you statement is a lie.

Comment by candymarl | 2008-07-20 18:33:05

Comment by StPaulite | 2008-07-20 19:05:06

Bush probably should be impeached. But then, again, if he was, we would have a President Cheney, which would be no better, and probably much worse.

But what does Pelosi’s stance on impeachment have to do with what I asked about Iraq? Not a thing.

I’ll ask again: what should we do in Iraq? Plan to leave, or come up with excuses to stay? Which candidate is going to focus on withdrawal, and which one has always been committed to war, any war?

These questions aren’t hard.

Comment by Hope Floats | 2008-07-20 20:41:45

We already covered that in a post last week “About Those Benchmarks.” Just to let you know there is some objective, and our troops are fighting a worthier cause than “murdering Iraqis for their oil.”

Comment by StPaulite | 2008-07-20 21:37:22

Of course there’s “an objective”: mutual safety, stability, and fiscal responsibility. After 5+ years of war, withdrawal is the best option for all of those. We have long worn out our welcome in that country, something John McCain doesn’t seem to get. To compare Iraq to Korea or Germany makes no sense — there will be no peace with a long-term American troop presence there.

When did I say anything about “murdering Iraqis for their oil”? I absolutely do not believe that is what the troops are doing. The people on this site would be much more credible if they’d actually engage with the words in front of them instead of making things up.

For more detailed explanations, refer to the piece mentioned. Here is the checklist with simple YES and NO answers.

(i) Forming a Constitutional Review Committee and then completing the constitutional review. NO

(ii) Enacting and implementing legislation on de-Ba’athification reform. NO

(iii) Enacting and implementing Oil legislation (i.e., share the wealth). NO

(iv) Enacting and implementing legislation on procedures to form semi-autonomous regions. ON HOLD TILL AFTER 2008

(v) Enacting and implementing legislation establishing an Independent High Electoral Commission, provincial elections law, provincial council authorities, and a date for provincial elections. NO

(vi) Enacting and implementing legislation addressing amnesty. NO

(vii) Enacting and implementing legislation establishing a strong militia disarmament program to ensure that such security forces are accountable only to the central government and loyal to the constitution of Iraq. YES - but the US is doing this with no help from Iraq

(viii) Establishing supporting political, media, economic, and services committees in support of the Baghdad Security Plan. YES

(ix) Providing three trained and ready Iraqi brigades to support Baghdad operations. YES

(x) Providing Iraqi commanders with all authorities to execute this plan and to make tactical and operational decisions in consultation with U.S. Commanders without political intervention to include the authority to pursue all extremists including Sunni insurgents and Shiite militias. YES - but it’s still a US ballgame

(xi) Ensuring that Iraqi Security Forces are providing even-handed enforcement of the law. YES

(xii) Ensuring that, as Prime Minister Maliki was quoted by President Bush as saying, “the Baghdad Security Plan will not provide a safe haven for any outlaws, regardless of [their] sectarian or political affiliation.” YES

(xiii) Reducing the level of sectarian violence in Iraq and eliminating militia control of local security. YES - the surge is working. Congrats to John McCain.

(xiv) Establishing all of the planned joint security stations in neighborhoods across Baghdad. YES - provided benchmarks continue to be met.

(xv) Increasing the number of Iraqi security forces units capable of operating independently. YES

(xvi) Ensuring that the rights of minority political parties in the Iraqi legislature are protected. NO

(xvii) Allocating and spending $10 billion in Iraqi revenues for reconstruction projects, including delivery of essential services, on an equitable basis. YES - money is being sent. NO - it is not making it to the civilian population.

(xviii) Ensuring that Iraq’s political authorities are not undermining or making false accusations against members of the ISF. NO - despite the good intentions of some Iraqis, government corruption still poses a challenge.

Europe’s governments immune to Obama-fever

BERLIN (Reuters) - European fans will cheer on U.S. presidential candidate Barack Obama as he visits Berlin, Paris and London this week, but governments wary of his inexperience and evolving policies fear the euphoria is overdone.

Largely an unknown quantity in Europe, the Democratic contender is due to land here on Thursday, kicking off the second part of a foreign tour that began in the Middle East with a speech on trans-Atlantic relations in the German capital.

His appearance at the “Victory Column” in Berlin’s central Tiergarten park is expected to draw huge crowds and is being likened in advance to former president John F. Kennedy’s celebrated “Ich bin ein Berliner” performance of 1963.

But in the German Chancellery a few hundred meters away there is unease with the Illinois senator’s cult-like following and skepticism about whether he can live up to the hype.

“There is a sort of Obama-mania in Germany right now, but I think a lot of people will have their illusions shattered if he does become president,” an official in Chancellor Angela Merkel’s office told Reuters, requesting anonymity.

But no. It’s not about our country. It’s about how bad you want Senator Obama to be president. Because going with the way I have been sitting back and just silently watching…he will save the world, end the war, bring world piece, all on day one. It gets harder sitting back and observing as I see some of the most ridiculous, irrational, idiotic reasons for a person to become president. Not once have I read reasons that had anything to do with this country.
It’s enough to just cut off the news, and find a church to go and sit and pray and hope this was a episode of Scare Tactics or Punk’d.

What’s worse is that this is broadcasted live in newspapers etc etc. So we all get a first hand look as the Democratic Party do the unbelievable. Make President Bush leave office with a high approval rating while ensuring No Dems hold a majority. I dont know what many of you are viewing that looks wonderful coming from the Obama campaign. But all I see is a horror show of huge proportions and alot of things playing out that is scaring people shitless, myself included.

It kinds of make you fucking pissed the fuck off when your friends and co workers seem to think that THEY, the Iraqi’s are more excited about his presidency than you are. There fucking interviewing these people on what THEY think!

Can you not see anything wrong with this fucking picture? How about we reverse the rolls and send your asses over there and see how it feel watching Iraqi’s be interviewed about YOUR possible president.

And these bloggers have the nerve to state that they are going to use scare tactics against Obama. Are you that fucking stupid? Seriously? Have you ever looked at it from our point of view? How the hell would you look at it if they are asking the locals what THEY think before you? How many soldiers did you see interviewed asking there opinion? Now go back and read how many Iraqi’s they asked.

John McCain wants the troops home too. Anyone who’s ever been away in a war zone for an extended period of time …. as McCain has, being a POW in a North Vietnames hellhole for 5 years …. knows how much troops want to come home.

The difference between McCain and Obama is that McCain will only pull troops out of Iraq as fast as the Iraqis can step in to replace them. Now, given the way that things have improved in Iraq over the past 18 months, I think that it is indeed likely that we could have the great bulk of our troops out of Iraq by mid-2010, if not sooner. No doubt that is what Prime Minister Al-Maliki was referring to. But I didnot read his remarks as any kind of endorsement of a fixed timetable, come hell or high water.

But it bears repeating that if the decisions on Iraq had been left up to the likes of Barack Obama. Nancy Peolsi, and Howard Dean, we would have suffered a humiliating Vietnam-like defeat in Iraq rather than the victory we are now poised to claim.

The bottom line is that when it comes to foreign affairs, I trust the judgement of John McCain. I do not trust Barack Obama.

Comment by Johnny at Work | 2008-07-21 11:33:56

There has been much hay made from the der Spiegel interview with Iraqi PM Maliki. What is clear is that Maliki says two things.

One, Iraq wants to establish a LONG TERM Strategic Treaty with the US, AND continue the EXISTING Security Agreement with the US.

Two, MOST of the coalition troops should be removed sooner rather than later, but that depends on circumstances on the ground.

Maliki says that although the 16 month timeframe proposed by Obama would be right, it is possible that it could change, and “Of course, this is by no means an election endorsement.”

In this interview Maliki shows that Iraq is committed to the proposals expressed by McCain. Troops will be withdrawn as the security situation improves, which has improved during the surge. And, there will be a long term presence by the US for security.

McCain and even Bush along with everyone else on the planet want MOST of the troops removed as soon as possible. But, even the Iraqis do not want the US to retreat from Iraq entirely. Obama on the other hand proposes a complete withdrawal.

As to be expected,, the left wing Press at Der Spiegel, and the US Press that pick up the story, run with “MALIKI ENDORSES OBAMA’S PLAN”, and “MALIKI BACKS OBAMA TROOP PULLOUT PLAN” even though Maliki himself emphasizes he is not endorsing Obama, nor Obama’s plan.

Since the left wing press published Maliki’s supposed endorsement of the Obama plan, Maliki has tried to correct the false and misleading interpretation of what he said. A spokesman for al-Maliki said his remarks “were misunderstood, mistranslated and not conveyed accurately.”

Government spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh said the possibility of troop withdrawal was based on the continuance of security improvements, echoing statements that the White House made Friday after a meeting between al-Maliki and U.S. President Bush.

Don’t take my word for it. Read the original Der Spiegel transcript below. Maliki clearly says he wants to continue the US Security Agreement, and Troop withdrawal plans are subject to change depending on security circumstances.

http://www.spiegel.de/international/world/0,1518,566852,00.html

SPIEGEL: Germany, after World War II, was also liberated from a tyrant by a US-led coalition. That was 63 years ago, and today there are still American military bases and soldiers in Germany. How do you feel about this model?

Maliki: Iraq can learn from Germany’s experiences, but the situation is not truly comparable. Back then Germany waged a war that changed the world. Today, we in Iraq want to establish a timeframe for the withdrawal of international troops — and it should be short. At the same time, we would like to see the establishment of a long-term strategic treaty with the United States, which would govern the basic aspects of our economic and cultural relations. However, I wish to re-emphasize that our security agreement should remain in effect

SPIEGEL: Would you hazard a prediction as to when most of the US troops will finally leave Iraq?

Maliki: As soon as possible, as far as we’re concerned. U.S. presidential candidate Barack Obama talks about 16 months. That, we think, would be the right timeframe for a withdrawal, with the possibility of slight changes.

Comment by Johnny at Work | 2008-07-21 14:53:00

More on the Iraqi Withdrawal Position:

No Ringing Endorsement Of Obama’s Plan During Today’s Visit:

Asked specifically if Obama, who has proposed a withdrawal of U.S. combat troops within 16 months, raised the question during the talks, Iraqi spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh told reporters: “This issue, we do not discuss …”

In the topic of a withdrawal timetable, al-Dabbagh told reporters, “We are hoping that in 2010 that combat troops will withdraw from Iraq.” But he added that the government did not endorse a fixed date. He also said any withdrawal plan was subject to change if there is a rise in the level of violence.

That is the McCain plan which has not changed since Day One.

We stopped counting the changes to Obama’s plan, but expect another one at any moment.
